1 out of 5 stars Misleading book from an "expert" who cheats people.......2007-07-29

I didn't like this book because it rehashes a lot of the same stuff in his first book, thus the materials is not very "new". "Ted Tesser's New Book" is a case of the Emperor's New Clothes. The author runs a supposedly reputable business in Florida trying to "save traders money". I followed the tax advice in the book on setting up corporate entities and ended up caught between a rock and a hard place, because the book did not include critically important details (perhaps intentionally?). When I needed more specific details, the authors' company tried to force me to pay $350/hour charged to a credit immediately over the phone for advice if my CPA was standing there to help me make sense of it all. The phone call was already costing me $100/hour. At that point I knew I was dealing with a sheister. I would not recommend this book or getting involved with the Waterside Financial to anyone. 3 out of 5 stars Good beginner book.......2005-08-13

The book is really good. The reason why I gave it only 3 stars is that it doesn't cover the complex stuff I am looking for. And it mostly target to small trader. This book will do you little good if you able to make over million dollars a year from the market. The book does not mention much about asset protection. As with any trader, the only asset is their cash, and I believe the author should put more work into this section if a new version is on the way.

I was thrilled to see a book that teaches children about the value of money. It is extremely well written and the colorful illustrations kept my three year old nephew wanting to read more and more the book.

5 out of 5 stars Money Mama to the Rescue!.......2004-01-17

Money Mama and her three little piggies make the concept of saving as easy as 10/10/10/70! This great little book is beautifully designed, well-written and features bold, colorful illustrations that will immediately appeal to children AND parents alike.

My daughter, like most children, learned her bad spending and non-existent saving habits from her parents, (who learned their bad spending and non-existent saving habits from THEIR parents.) It's a destructive cycle that needed breaking, but I wasn't sure how to do it. Enter: "Money Mama & The Three Little Pigs". I learned about this excellent book (and companion piggy bank) from a friend (who showed me HERS!) I was so captivated by the simplicity with which the daunting subjects of "giving", "investing", and "saving" were communicated, that I HAD to buy a copy for myself and my daughter. By breaking the process down into bite-sized pieces, I learned that anyone can benefit from the lessons taught in the book -- no matter how large or small the amount of money, success can begin with one little dollar.

I highly recommend this book to everyone who has kids and struggles with the subject of saving! You're never too old to learn the invaluable lessons outlined in the book, and I give Ms. Mackey two thumbs WAY up for her ingenous and innovative presentation of a complex subject. This is the gift that keeps on giving (and saving and investing) -- I'm glad I got mine before they ran out! :-)

5 out of 5 stars A recommended pick .......2007-06-17

BURIED IN TREASURES: HELP FOR COMPULSIVE ACQUIRING, SAVING, AND HOARDING is written for those who have a compulsive hoarding problem: it comes from a team of scientists who have worked for over a dozen years on developing a program for treating hording, and chapters both define compulsive hoarding and offer strategies to begin to sort, discard and move away from hoarding habits. The authors have been featured on TV and in articles for their ground-breaking research, and BURIED IN TREASURES is thus a recommended pick beyond the usual college-level health library, reaching easily into public library collections with an easily-accessed format and approach.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book! .......2007-06-08

While it's true that it is not presented in a scholarly way (as a previous reviewer commented), the information in the book represents the most current knowledge we have on hoarding. As others have mentioned, the authors are preeminent experts in the field. All three are Ph.Ds and have published numerous scholarly works on this topic. I believe the authors must have deliberately chosen to leave out the clinical jargon for this book, in order to make the information accessible to those without a medical or science background. I think the book is quite elegant in its simplicity and clarity, and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to know more about hoarding.

4 out of 5 stars Good info for relatives of hoarders.......2007-06-08

This book has a lot of valuable information about hoarders and how their minds process differently than non-hoarders. Although the intended audience is hoarders themselves, I don't see hoarders as able to read this book and follow the process. I do think the book is helpful to anyone who lives with or knows a hoarder, and also mental health providers.
One negative: the large page size is a bit unwieldy.

5 out of 5 stars You might need this book and not know it........2007-05-22

Hard core look at why we can't throw things away. New info, not just a "how to organize" book. Real help for pack rats like me who are not over the edge yet, but are teetering.

5 out of 5 stars A Useful Tool.......2007-05-08

In the introduction of "Buried in Treasures", Tolin, Frost and Steketee offer two cautions to the reader. Caution 1 "this book will not solve your hoarding problems". They state "this book is a guide that will provide you with the necessary information to understand the problem of compulsive hoarding and will give you tools to help beat the problem". Caution 2 is that "overcoming compulsive hoarding will be hard work".

The authors emphasize that hoarding is "a problem of emotional, mental, behavioral, and social well-being" and that "some scientific evidence suggests that there may be a genetic component to hoarding". It is basically a description of the treatment program that they have developed over many years of treating patients at their hoarding clinic. While the book discusses the physical side regarding sorting and purging as well as the stopping of the acquiring, its' emphasis is on the mental/emotional side of hoarding.

As opposed to other similar books, this book is based on science and ongoing clinical research. The book is essentially a guide to change and the authors note that "people start to work on their hoarding problem when the reasons for change outweigh the reasons for not changing, and not a moment sooner". Their suggested treatment is based on CBT (cognitive-behavioral therapy) which is solution focused.

This is somewhat of a workbook. It includes many exercises to help the hoarder to consciously change their thinking. Some examples are a self-assessment test in the chapter "What is Compulsive Hoarding?", a hoarding severity scale that is very similar
to the NSGCD Hoarding Scale, Visualization Exercises, Category & Location lists and questionnaires such as "Comparing Your Perceptions with Those of Others".

Early in the book, the authors introduce and discuss the Bad Guys: 1 - It's Just Not My Priority, 2 - Letting Unhelpful Beliefs Get In Your Way, 3 - Overthinking or Confusing Yourself, 4 - Avoidance and Excuse Making and 5 - Going for the Short-Term Payoff. Then they introduce the Good Guys: 1- Keeping Your Eyes on the Prize, 2 - Downward Arrow, 3 - Thinking It Through, 4 - Behavioral Experiments and 5 - Developing the Right Skills. The authors revisit the Bad Guys and the Good Guys again later in the book when dealing with motivation and "taking on your brain".

An interesting observation noted by the authors was that when hoarders attempted to sort their own items, they tended to have lots of little categories but when sorting similar items that belonged to other people, they were able to sort into a few large general categories. This suggests that when dealing with their own possessions, "their emotions get in the way and cause them to process information differently".

As a Professional Organizer, I consider this book a tool. It is not a `how to' that a hoarder could pick up, read and follow to a successful conclusion. On their own, most hoarders are just not capable of following some of the suggestions, such as, "you might want to think a step or two ahead"! However this is an excellent book if used as part of a larger treatment program.

5 out of 5 stars Best Cook Book I ever bought!.......2007-10-18

I usually cook from memory, but with the hope of finding recipes that would actually save me money (my cooking often costs more than eating out!) I purchased this book. My hopes were more than realized. I love this book so much that I keep it out for easy access.

5 out of 5 stars Frugal Recipes Without Feeling Deprived.......2007-10-03

Dining On a Dime is absolutely one of the best thrifty cookbooks available. I love to cook, collect cookbooks, but I was tired of finding recipes that required processed foods, expensive ingredients, etc. Dining On a Dime uses few processed foods to prepare recipes, as most everything is prepared from scratch. This morning I prepared a Slow Cooked Pot Roast (I cook my version on the stove top) and the only ingredients needed were a beef roast, can of cream of mushroom soup and a sliced onion. I also fixed Mom's Beef Stew which used round steak, various spices, Worcestershire sauce, potatoes and carrots. I also prepared dumplings using the baking mix recipe included in the cookbook. The dumplings were mighty tasty when cooked in the beef stew. Very simple and very tasty. Overall, this cook book is a good, basic cookbook which allows the cook to use every day ingredients to prepare tasty meals.

4 out of 5 stars Good resource~.......2007-06-21

A keeper. Lots of tips and good recipes.

4 out of 5 stars A really handy book .......2007-06-08

I use this book mostly for the basic recipes, and it does help in a pinch. It also gives you meal ideas which are pretty easy to make and mostly kid friendly (which is important for me). I have other cookbooks, but I don't really use them because sometimes they require more time or ingredients that I have on hand at the time. This book also has handy tips in the back of the book that include making homemade play dough, soap, and household cleaners. 4.5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Frugal Resource!.......2006-09-10

Dining On A Dime is filled with money-saving recipes, many of which my family has tried and enjoyed. It is more than just a cookbook though. It presents lots of ways to reduce your grocery bills, with shopping and cooking tips galore. There are organizing tips too, as well as the beauty booklet Pretty For Pennies. A great book for every household to have. I can see where a family could save $10,000 a year as is mentioned on page three of the book. Thanks to co-authors Tawra Kellam and Jill Cooper for a wonderful source of savings in the book Dining On A Dime.

In a wise and witty manner, brothers David and Tom Gardner, founders of the multimedia investment company The Motley Fool, impart their investment strategies to the adolescent masses with The Motley Fool Investment Guide for Teens. In eight teen-friendly sections, the brothers Gardner and writing partner Selena Maranjian demystify the stock market by describing and defining mutual funds, banking practices, IRAs, and drip investing. The authors also include numerous quotes from money-savvy adolescents who detail some of their rookie market moves in an attempt to help their peers steer clear of similar mistakes. Parents will approve of the strongly worded sections on credit card debt and the costly financial and physical tolls a smoking habit takes on both wallet and health. In fact, parents would do well to pick up this investment primer for their own edification, if they find the stock market a confusing and chaotic business. Loaded with worksheets, helpful Web sites on a variety of financial subjects, a concise glossary, and a comprehensive index, this is one investment guide that both generations can and will turn to again and again.

Traditionally, teens have been known for having a hard time seeing the proverbial Big Picture. But the Gardners respond admirably to this characteristic, by constantly emphasizing the fortune teens can make in the future by investing now and reminding them that investing money is the least labor-intensive way to make more of the desirable green stuff. A perfect gift for the burgeoning Warren Buffet in your life. (Ages 12 and older) --Jennifer Hubert

5 out of 5 stars Good Book For All Ages.......2007-02-14

This book has reinforced what I have been preaching to my 17 year old for years......1) save and invest your money early, 2)live within your means as you get started in life (used vs new car), 3) attend the local university (keep student loans to minimum) and 4) practice a healthy lifestyle and you will soon learn that by the time you are 30 you will have more financial freedom and less debt than 90% of Americans.

I wish I had been taught the discipline for the first two items as it wasn't until age 40 that I reached financial freedom. Fortunately for him, he is a believer after reading this book. Maybe along the way he will guide others in the right direction.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Way to Enjoy Finance & Economics.......2006-02-27

This books gives the true value of savings: a life worth dreamings about and investments we make for it to see it happen. This is a sweet and funny little book that makes money look exciting as a tool and token. I see this book as the clues to playing a cool video game. (More, like the hint book.) It's so casual that you think your reading Reader's Digest. You never feel confused! Math teacher's, parents, middle schoolers, high school students, college students, retirees: you'll love this book.

4 out of 5 stars Yes, a good money book for teens, but the voice is annoying........2005-05-03

This book will basically focus on the way the stock market works and how to invest in it. It also tells you how much you can save in the future. It is the meat of the book when it comes to the stock market, but the book will also teach you the cost of bad habits such as smoking and the upsides of credit cards if used right. The book teaches you how to get your money's worth in the bank, teaching you everything from how they make money to what a cd is. The worst thing about this book that annoyed me so much, I took off a point, was that they try to write the book in a type of slang format. Going from saying the word dawg and writing rock lyrics about the book. This is very annoying, but the tips this book gives are just too valuble to detour you alway.

I recommend it to anyone of any age.

5 out of 5 stars Great intro financial / investing book for **everyone**.......2005-02-08

I only skimmed this book (after all, I own almost all the other TMF books!), but I think this book is by far one of the best financial books for **any** new investor, regardless of age. While other books may have more content, this is one of the most approachable financial and investing books I've read. (Plus, its worksheets **force** you practice what you read!) Readable by adults, too!

5 out of 5 stars This book is the beginning of your future.......2005-01-24

I am in college. I guess I got this information kind of late. I actually started my first job way later than other kids.

I think this book inspired me to save and invest in my future. I did not know a freaking thing about investing till this came along. The thing I found most suprising was that you don't need any knowlege of the stock market to come out ahead. They make it so simple...and its life changing. I recommend this book if you want to be able to survive comfortabley when your retired.
Start saving and investing now! buy the book.

Book Description

Retire Secure! tackles the number one fear facing most IRA and retirement plan owners:  running out of money too soon. Lange, a nationally recognized IRA expert, offers specific and practical strategies to successfully navigate the three stages of retirement planning: accumulation, distribution, and estate planning.

Retire Secure! explains the tax advantages and long term wealth building strategies of selectively and strategically putting money into IRAs, Roth IRAs, 401(k)s, Roth 401(k)s and the myriad other retirement plan options available to individuals working in the corporate world, the non-profit sector, as well as individual proprietors. The book proves that putting money into tax advantaged retirement plans beats “traditional saving” in the after-tax environment.

The book sheds new light on best practices for spending your IRA and retirement plan dollars and your traditional savings. Many readers will be surprised to discover that the order in which assets are spent is not a trivial consideration—it can make or break the bank.

It also outlines Lange’s exceptional estate plan–a plan that has been featured in the Wall Street Journal and many other fine financial journals.

The book offers financial planning strategies and tactics in plain English that everyone can understand—and using humor and interesting characters in real life situations the book escapes the dreaded dry financial tome tone. For example, Chapter 1 offers a great mini case study that charts the financial destiny of Mr. Pay Taxes Later and Mr. Pay Taxes Now. 5 out of 5 stars Excellent book on financial planing and retirement.......2007-06-12

Bravo!

This book is a must read if you're planning to retire wealthy, or at least securely.

And...

Every college student should be required to study this book carefully if they want to avoid all the common mistakes and money pitfalls that 98% of us fall into. I wish I had read this when I was in college... I would be $100,000 wealthier.

5 out of 5 stars What everyone needs to read and understand to make the best retirement decisions.......2007-01-03

James Lang has had so much excellent advice for my husband and me that we purchased 7 copies for our adult children and are hopeful they will benefit from the knowledge in the books and cds.

5 out of 5 stars Retire Secure-Solid Advice For All.......2006-10-21

Reading "Retire Secure" will not alone make you rich. However, if you read and follow Mr. Lange's advice, you will build wealth and then protect it to the fullest extent possible. The book outlines a very clear path to maximize savings using the most effective vehicle available to you. Then it goes on to provide a thorough roadmap to minimizing your tax consequences and maximizing your after tax returns. Finally the book provides several different strategies for passing along wealth to your heirs while once again factoring in the greedy hands of Uncle Sam. The author not only provides you with the theory, as many financial planners do, but backs up his recommendations with solid proofs and confirms them with amusing case studies. Overall this book is an excellent source for information on the use of retirement funds for wealth building and hopefully inheritance to pass on.

5 out of 5 stars Good for Advisors and Investors.......2006-10-11

James Lange's Retire Secure, offers great techniques to help persons planning for retirement. He is on the right track - to postpone and minimize the impact of taxes - in order to maximize the retiree's money and extend the spendable income. This book makes a valuable contribution to the field of personal finance - for both the consumers and the professional advisors who serve them.

5 out of 5 stars My Roadmap.......2006-09-19

I find James Lange's book to be excellant. When we want to go someplace we're not familiar with, who uses MapQuest? Why? It gives us the starting point and the ending point. This book gives so much valuable information. I'll be retiring in 10 to 11 years, so my interest is quite serious. I stumbled accross Mr. Lange's website and find that to also be a fine source of information. As a 'boomer' I'm amazed at what the internet has done for our culture i.e. sharing of information.

3 out of 5 stars The tittle is somewhat misleading.......2003-12-22

[...] After reading the book, (BTW, I bought it nearly one year ago) I realized it doesn't provide detailed solutions that might help us do-it-yourself folks to prepare tax returns, if, for instance, you're a Security trader.
The book, however, is a very good start where one may find a quite complete education on tax and estate planning, and where one may find further info. It provides many real life court cases, involving tax filings, with comments. [...] this is not a "how-to" book. For instance, it doesn't tell me how to complete Form 3115 line by line, rather it explains the purpose of the Form and the key points one must know about the Form.
The number of issues covered in the book may be more than what one needs to know. All in all, it is a very good text for those who care to know more about their money and taxes, and the nasty surprises that IRS has in store for the unprepared.

My son is 9 and has latched on to this book. He skips around to read different sections and really seems to be enjoying it. He is already saving to start his first bank account, so we will see where he can go from here. After glancing through it, this seems to be a well written and easy to understand book. Hopefully this will be a good influence on him!

Book Description

Children save over $20.00 by filling the built-in coin slots on each page with pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters while building early math skills.

This money book features a delightful rhyming verse, which takes young readers along the savings path through the Penny Candy Shop, the Five-and-Ten-Cents-Store, and Quarter Quarry, until they complete the journey at Dollar Roundup, and discover the many ways coins add up to dollars. A fun and educational way for children to learn the value of coins as they watch their savings grow!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars grandson's gift.......2003-10-27

I gave this to my 5 year old grandson last year for Christmas. He has twice saved up $20 in the book and his mother takes him to the Dollar Store to chose some items. He is also learning about the value of different coins and equivalents.

5 out of 5 stars A great way to save!.......2001-10-25

We started an allowance for our almost 5 year old son and we were having a difficult time teaching him about saving. This book was the perfect tool! Now, instead of wanting to run out and spend the few coins he earns each week, he's excited about saving them up. And at the same time learning some math and money counting skills. I'll be purchasing this for several nieces and nephews as well.

5 out of 5 stars coin count-y is a must for ids.......2000-11-19

anyone trying to teach youngsters about saving should start with coin county ! wonderfully illistrated and original. fun and secretly educational . simply a must for age 4 to 10.

5 out of 5 stars Fiscal Management for Little Ones.......2000-10-10

Mr. Talbot's book appeals on so many levels, it is a "must buy" for any household with children who are curious about coins.

Pick it up for any child who is always wandering around with that spare penny, nickel, dime or quarter clutched in his or her little fist. The book provides a safe place to collect those coins, while storing them in such a way that they can be looked at from time to time.

This book is perfect for any child who is ready to learn about the distinguishing characteristics of these basic coins, and how we use those coins to add up to different amounts.

And the book walks little ones through the process of saving, a stepping stone in the lesson of the value of responsible money handling. The book's premise: "If I fill all the slots, then I will have..." You and your child can then decide how the amazing sum (over $20.00, ultimately) will be spent.

Our entire family is having fun with this book. I would pick it up again in a heartbeat, and will undoubtedly be giving it to everyone I know.

5 out of 5 stars Great bargain, fun book!.......1999-11-12

This book is fantastic. It not only lets children keep their coins on the bookshelf, but teaches them about money at the same time. Some of the pages show children how many pennies it takes to make a nickel, dime and quarter, and others take you along a money path. I was thrilled with the book quality and price!

Book Description

As a parent, you worry about instilling good financial values in your children—no matter what your income level. But when and how is it appropriate to start teaching your kids about the almighty dollar? Joline Godfrey, founder and CEO of Independent Means, Inc.—the leading provider of financial programs for kids and their parents—has the answers. In RAISING FINANCIALLY FIT KIDS, Godfrey aims her friendly, approachable, and practical text at parents and grandparents of children ages 5 to 18. At the heart of the book is a developmental map covering 10 specific money skills children can master by the age of 18 to become financially secure adults. Godfrey's fitness plan doesn't encourage children to accumulate wealth for its own sake; rather, it helps children achieve independence and become responsible members of families and communities by teaching habitual savings, smart money management, and decision-making skills. More than just a money book, RAISING FINANCIALLY FIT KIDS will help you send your kids into the world as balanced young adults who exercise good judgment, practice responsible habits, and live financially stable lives.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous.......2007-10-22

This book is fabulous and Joline is a great speaker, as well. I work in the money management industry and thought I "knew it all" but I learned a lot from this book! Her insights on the "magical" properties we assign to money, and the way to deal with allowances (it's a tool to teach kids about money, not payment for household services or simply an entitlement) were very interesting and useful. I will definitely use this book in raising my daughter.

5 out of 5 stars Every parent needs this book!.......2005-12-13

This book teaches parents how to share every day money lessons with their children. It is easy to read and has great examples. I highly recommend that every parent buy and read this book. As the book states it is not all about the money but about raising great kids!

5 out of 5 stars The Best Parenting Guide To Teaching Kids About Money!.......2005-05-17

This is the best guide to teaching kids about money. I've got 3 small and busy kids and not much time to read. This book is great because it's easy (but not insulting) and offers concrete activities - outlined in charts (minimal reading required). One of the best things about this book is that it makes you think about your own money values and how you express yourself with money. Then it gives you ideas of how to teach your kids about money in a way that matches YOUR family's ideas...and it gives tips on how to "tweak" the message, depending on your children's personalities. The book is divided into age-appropriate sections, so advice for parents of 5 year olds is different from that of parents of 9 or 13 or 18 year olds. This is a great book you will use for years.

4 out of 5 stars mr jimenez class review.......2004-12-02

this is one of thoses books you have to have on the book shelf at home. it is great and a fun book to refer to. it really shows what teaching kids is all about the economy, but in a fun way. i think this is a great book to referance!

5 out of 5 stars realistic, easy to understand, interesting!.......2004-03-30

Teaching kids about money is a challenge Joline Godfrey tackles beautifully. Do we share our budgets with them or shield them from the harsh reality of adult life? How much is too much - allowance, birthday money, "fun" money? Can we keep our kids from ammassing unmanageable credit card debt when they get older? Joline Godfrey offers practical advice that is reasonable and accessible for people of average, above average and below average means alike. Let's teach our kids more effectively than we were taught!
