5 out of 5 stars Option Trading Bible.......2007-10-01

Considered by many professionals as the bible of option trading, Options as a Strategic Investment is a must have addition to any serious option's trader. Option trading is widely misunderstood and feared by many stock traders mostly because it takes real effort to really capture the mechanics that is behind this trading form.

This book will help anyone that is beginning in this exciting field to get a grip of all the things that is involved in option trading and is a great reference book for professionals. The lessons are clear and the information is up to date and straight to the point. Studying this book alone or even better...this book with a few other reference books will get you in the right direction of this often misunderstood but highly profitable form of trading. A must buy addition to anyone's trading book collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book!.......2007-09-19

This is an excellent book for the serious option's trader. Very detail and in depth explanation of all different types of option trading strategies. Recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Worth the money!.......2007-06-27

This book is probably the best on the subject. It is usually called the Option Bible. It would be nice if it was updated to reflect some modern trades (e.g. condor).

5 out of 5 stars A Good Investment For Learning More About Options.......2007-06-27

This book is written in clear, easy to understand language with examples that go further to clarify what a specific strategy/technique is. It is not a boring, academic book. The only drawback that I have run into is that the commissions for trades are far in excessive of what is available through internet brokerages. The impact is that sometimes the book will stress that commissions will make a big difference in outcome whereas that is not generally true in my experience. I immediately learned about using in the money covered calls that either produce income or significantly lower the cost per share of a security and profitably but this to use.

5 out of 5 stars Don't EVER do options without this book!.......2007-06-08

After reading The Options Course by George Fontanills, which is a very good book for beginners, you'll want take the next step. This is THE ultimate book on options. It covers absolutely every aspect of options trading. Your mouth will drop after you put your hands on this book. There's a gazzilion ways to cut your risk and maximize profits, and this book reveals every single one in detail. Do yourself a favor and buy this book.

The only problem I see is that the book is really, really boring for beginners and people who are not serious about trading options. I was just learning the basics when I first read it, and it was pretty hard to finish it. Read a couple of other books on options for beginners (like George's) and start paper trading options BEFORE you buy this one. I read a lot of books before I started trading and hated most of them. Now that I know how the real thing works and all the potential, I feel much more compelled to read it all over again.

The book offers an overview of every trade possible, all scenarios and follow-up action. All the examples are very clear and well explained. There's a lot of ways to lock in profits too, all very well described. Even if you've been trading for 10 years, you will be amazed when you read this book. If you read it thoroughly 4 or 5 times a year, there's absolutely no excuse for you not to become a master in options trading. If all the other books are the options college, this is your PhD course.

2 out of 5 stars Summary with no meat.......2006-08-06

The book is simply a summary outline of the material for the CFP test, which can easily be obtained on the Board's website. Without sufficient detail, I can not imagine how it could be helpful.

2 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for..........2006-03-19

Just took the CFP exam yesterday. I'm a quick study, have been in the industry a while, am a CLU/ChFC, so I hoped I could find a condensed study guide that would serve to refresh my memory and allow me to skate through. I'm CHEAP too, so I was hoping I could save some $$$ by not enrolling in a review course.

Fortunate for me, a buddy that passed the exam last year and paid $1,200 for a BISYS review course heard I was taking the test and loaned me HIS books (all 2500 pages) as a supplement to this study guide. Those materials SAVED MY HIDE!!! I would have failed if I relied on this book. The tax data is all outdated and critical to the exam. Even if it were updated, there is still a HUGE amount of material missing that you need to know. Didn't even work for me as an outline. This is a hard test, so don't fool yourself like I did.

    5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2006-03-10

I'm finding this book very useful and i'm happy that it was available at a much cheaper price. Thanks.

1 out of 5 stars Please Don't Waste Your Money Like I Did !!!!!!!.......2005-10-25

I recently spent a bunch of money to take one of the several well established review courses. I purchased this book since it was relatively inexpensive and I thought I would check out the materials as a portable outline.

The book has not been updated since 2003. So much of the material is outdated!! Big problem!!! Need I say more!

Further, Amazon doesn't have a worthy return policy since I purchased this. I might change my review if the price were $5 because it isn't worth anymore.

    Avoid Avoid Avoid

    1 out of 5 stars Overly brief.......2005-08-06

This book is too brief to be helpful. It is mainly an outline, with not much more detail than the CFP exam topics list. It doesn't serve as a very helpful reference resource because the Table of Contents is too simplistic, and has a very minimal index.

In this ground-breaking new book, acclaimed diversity expert Mark Williams offers ten "eye-opening" lenses to help you, your organization, and everyone in it, understand how cultural diversity affects the way we live and work. There's the Assimilationist who believes that everyone should act like a true blue American, and the Culturalcentrist who believes that a person's race or ethnicity is central to their personal and public identity; the Meritrocratist who is sure that if you have the abilities and work hard enough you can make your dreams come true regardless of race or culture, and the Victim/Caregiver who believes that because of bias they will never succeed. Learn more about these lenses, as well as six other lenses that Mark Williams has developed to respond to cultural diversity.

5 out of 5 stars The 10 Lenses: Your Guide to Living & Working in a Multicultural World.......2007-01-04

I first read the 10 Lenses several years ago after meeting author Mark Williams at a Summit on Leading Diversity Conference in Atlanta. I have been using The 10 Lenses in our diversity education programs ever sense. This book has proven to a great conversation starter, without the usual "blame and shame" sometimes associated with diversity training. In fact, we have even established a very successful four-week course around "The 10 Lenses" in our Hampton Diversity Leadership Academy. Mark has advanced the entire discussion of "diversity" with this book. I highly recommend it to any diversity/inclusion professional.

3 out of 5 stars Promising, but in the end Disappointing.......2003-12-04

This is a useful Guide to Living as & Working with Immigrants in a Multicultural USA, not a Multicultural World. It really has little or no street-credibility outside the USA.

I've worked for a US Fortune500 Company for 20 years, and in over 30 Countries.

The book confesses upfront to its limitations : although the information is US-centric, Williams, Clifton & Thomas believe their concepts are universal - but they haven't the experience to back that up. They admit they don't know whether current observations will hold up in different cultures, or whether different cultures have different profiles with respect to the lenses. The initial research has focussed on race, culture, nationality & ethnicity. In practice 90% of its focus is on race & ethnicity. Sexual orientation is ignored, and the word 'gay' doesn't appear until over 80% of the way through the book - and its only for one sentence.

Consider some of the Lenses :

For the Assimilationist they talk about "adapting US business norms appropriately, given global norms and standards" - well I've never met a "Global norm" - and as for being able to adapt US norms, there's the problem - you have to reject US norms in order to get on with the outside world. The Assimilationist must think about "Western cultural arrogance" - woah - what about "US Cultural arrogance" - ask a Canadian or a Mexican or the French how they feel about US hegemony.

The Culturalcentrist talks about the "Irish, Polish & Italian Communities", and in the same breath about the "Asian Community" - I'm sure the "Asians" would argue they had less in common between India, Vietnam, Korea etc than those Europeans, who at least had Catholicism in common.

For the Seclusionist : "Globalisation ... diminishes the authority of the USA" - hmm, I thought everyone was rioting recently complaining that Globalisation meant US hegemony? The Seclusionist "rewards the efforts of the majority group" - oh so Williams has never thought of a Society where the dominant group is itself a Minority, such as in Apartheid-era South Africa, and a number of other inequitable Societies today?

The Transcendant options were just not for me - according to Williams you are either 'Religious' or you are 'Spiritual' - nothing else applies. I am neither, and quite happy thank you. I'm always made to feel uncomfortable with this aspect of US Society, and it would be good if Williams had a section on how to work with 'agnostics'.

The Elitist offered no alternatives - what about Communism or Socialism - the inequalities of US Society would not be tolerated in Scandinavia. As I say to my friends in Minneapolis, it's a pity the wrong shipload of explorers colonised North America.

For all the talk about race, there's no mention of working with people in mixed-race relationships or of mixed-race ethnicity - over 10% of marriages in the UK are mixed-race, even though the ethnic minorities constitute less than 8% of the population. I find mixed-race marriages in the USA to be a tragic rarity - and why aren't they promoted in TV programs?

There were no examples of other diversities which can be just as sensitive in Society, such as no case studies featuring Native Americans, Hindus, Moslems, Lesbians, Vegetarians or people with Physical/Mental disabilities.

The much-promoted mystical Chapter on the Eleventh Lens was a real disappointment - just some new world 'Nirvana' where everyone loved each other and did right by each other (I presume so long as you could still hire & fire at will).

When I looked through the Bibliography, I understood; of the 86 references, only 2 of them weren't published in the USA, and they were published in London (both looking back at the USA). You can't write a book about a Multicultural world if you don't read/travel widely.

Williams continually refers back to Title VII of the (US) Civil Rights Act (pity he didn't include it as an Appendix). It would have been nice to talk about the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights - since so much of US Society doesn't comply with it. I recall when one of our Senior US Executives starting to spout about Affirmative Action etc at a staff meeting in Germany - he had to be told to leave or they'd call the Police - because his US-speak was illegal under anti-Nazi legislation.

I scored myself on the Lenses : I am Colorblind, an Integrationalist, Meritocratist and a Multiculturalist. Williams was (in 2001) inviting Contributors to help them develop the book for a wider audience - I'm going to volunteer to help them, because boy do they need it.

5 out of 5 stars The Eleventh Lens.......2003-03-01

Mark Williams' research outlining 10 human mindset "lenses" addresses the problems of conflicting worldviews both in and out of the workplace. His work is extremely well organized for easy reference; you'll recognize in yourself and/or others the Assimilationist, Colorblind, Culturalcentrist, Elitist, Integrationist, Meritocratist, Multiculturalist, Seclusionist, New Age/Transcendent and/or Victim/Caretaker. With hope, you'll also recognize the real point of the book and the research: that you've been reaching for your inclusive ELEVENTH LENS where paradoxical thinking acknowledges and discerns the strengths and weaknesses each limited lens brings to the whole personally, professionally and socially -- and globally. See also the integrative developmental framework in A Brief History of Everything by Ken Wilber and Spiral Dynamics by Don Beck and Christopher Cowan.

5 out of 5 stars "The Ten Lenses" -- A Breath of Fresh Air!.......2001-11-09

"The Ten Lenses" is a badly needed breath of fresh air -- a sophisticated, intellectually grounded, and constructive framework for thinking about diversity issues. It respects and values all people and all perspectives on diversity. It opens a path to understanding each different perspective, even those dramatically different from one's own. It helps take the emotional charge out of verbal interactions between people whose approaches and reactions to diversity issues are widely divergent. It provides a new framework and a new language through which we can talk about diversity and move towards greater understanding. "The Ten Lenses" was an enormous help to me and I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars "The Ten Lenses" Opens Your Eyes!.......2001-11-08

I live and work in Washington, D.C., one of the most diverse cities in America. My department at work was having a lot of problems due to such a diverse workforce. We could not communicate well and our projects were never completed on time and never completed correctly. My boss brought this book in one day after he stayed up all night reading it. He could not put "The 10 Lenses" down. In a very short time, my department has turned itself around using the premises in this book. If you want to have a successful business, buy "The 10 Lenses."

I recommend this text to financial professionals I teach ... VERY helpful to clear the cobwebs several years after college!

3 out of 5 stars Good Study Material but Some Sloppy Errors.......2005-03-11

I read this book to supplement my CFA curriculum studies. Compared to other Schaum's books, Financial Management by Shim and Siegel merits a rating of between 3 and 3 1/2.

Four chapters covering topics of Risk Return & Valuation, Capital Budgeting, Capital Budgeting Under Risk, and Cost of Capital were excellent. Other chapters were also well written. The problem sets solidified concepts and were a pleasure to work through.

The authors present the material in a straight forward and easy to understand manner. They provide numerous examples of how to apply the concepts which are truly beneficial.

My main complaint is that there are dozens of errors throughout the book, which indicate sloppy proofreading. This can potentially frustrate readers new to the field of financial management. Calculation errors (!), misapplication of formulas (Do vs. D1) and mislabeling of charts (time lines / cash flows) were particularly frustrating and can be confusing.

I welcome the authors to contact me if they plan to release an updated edition (this book copyrighted 1998). I'll be glad to share with them the errors (at least I think they are!) I found.

It would also have been nice if the authors utilized financial calculators for some of the TVM (time value of money) applications and indicated the keystrokes. A break-out box showing the steps on a Texas Instrument BA-II or HP12-C (two popular financial calculators) would be helpful.

In sum, Financial Management is a very readable book. It is comprehensive, practical, and provides a good depth of discussion without getting too theoretical. Just watch out for the silly mistakes.

    5 out of 5 stars great resource.......2004-11-03

I don't know what that reader below is saying.?? This book was very helpful to me when I used this for a finance class. It's great because it has quizzes/exams, definitions, key terms, a useful index, many many sample problems, and formulas in bold. When you are a busy person and are using this as a refresher, or in conjunction w/ a textbook, it's very helpful to have this paperback workbook to go through for a quick reference.

I've referred to it many times while reading through my textbook, doing homework problems, or studying for a test.

Love the schaum's series - this one in particular has been very useful to me.

    5 out of 5 stars Financial Management y Schaum's.......2003-07-21

This work is a good supplement to the class text. It has hundreds
of solved problems depicted. In addition, the Schaum's covers
international financial management problems which are not always
found in the standard texts. This is a good practice
workbook to reinforce the current text and class notes.
Complex cash flow problems, present value and return on investment problems are shown with accompanying diagrams to aid
in the visual presentation. This text is excellent in order to
prepare for formal licensing exams and other comprehensive
    tests .

1 out of 5 stars lack of knowledge.......2003-05-27

just open the first sample page. you see that the author does not even understand what profit maximization, as defined by economists, is. i would be careful if i were you.

3 out of 5 stars Good Overview (But lacking in current information.).......2007-04-28

I own this book and found it to be a good source of information on the general world of elder care planning. It brings together the subjects of Medicare, Social Security, Medicaid and housing issues in one place. I was disappointed in that it did not deal with the subject of Medicaid more fully. It should also be noted that this book was published in 2003. This specifically makes the information contained within it on the subject of Medicaid out-of-date and useless to the reader. For an example of an up-to-date book on using Medicaid to pay for care in a nursing home or an assisted living facility please check out The Medicaid Handbook 2007.

5 out of 5 stars Better than Title - Should be "THE Guide..........2006-11-10

With a 17-page index, even an info maniac like myself can find anything and everything in this book.

I can't begin to describe the scope and layout throughout. I'm learning things about elder planning that I didn't even know I needed, not to mention the questions I already had. The author's opinions are woven into the descriptions, along with "Loophole" information on various senior subjects. The author obviously has a birdseye view of many subjects that are skimmed over by columnists that I've read.

The best way to read this book is probably cover to cover, so as not to miss anything.

5 out of 5 stars Not just "Elder" Planning.......2005-09-02

I wish I had read this when I was 20! It provides a bunch of savvy information for any age. It is clearly written, and (surprisingly) an interesting read. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Elder Planning Review.......2003-11-13

For each generation it seems that a reference book comes along that becomes the universal guide for the audience it intends to reach. Examples that come to mind are the Farmers Almanac and the Guinness Book of Records. For their intended reader these books are the starting and ending points of the information sought.

Steve Weisman has filled that void for those considering elder planning issues. The book's fund of knowledge takes pains to begin at defining terms and strategies and, only then, provides the advice needed by all. To best illustrate the breadth of topics contained in the treatise, the issues range from asset protection to planning for your pets. The book is of value not only to the elderly but also to extended families facing elder planning issues and provides methods for non-elderly adults to maximize their assets throughout their life. As with any great book aimed at helping the populace, the use of clear, concise language is remarkable. In reviewing the book, I am left with the old refrain, "why didn't I think of that" but I can happily report that Steve Weisman did think of that and his efforts benefit us all.

5 out of 5 stars Aging can be humorous.......2003-11-10

Who would have thought that a topic as seemingly dry and dull as financial and legal planning could be handled in such a humorous fashion while still providing a great deal of helpful information and suggestions for personal planning? This is a book that has important information for everyone, particularly older people, presented in a style that will make you smile.

3 out of 5 stars Decent Study Guide for Fans of the Main Hardcover.......2006-05-11

For those who enjoyed the "Technical Analysis Explained" by Pring, but want to know if they can recall some of the facts, this is a great accompaniment, whether for an examination or just for some fun. (For CMT and CFT Level 1, this book would not help much, as the exam questions do not cover much charting, despite assigning the main text book as core reading). The multiple choice style questions cover nearly all chapters. There are around 10 to 20 questions per chapter, which implies that one can finish the entire quiz book within a day. At $20, it is a bit on the expensive side, hence my low valuation.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent start on Technical Analysis.......2005-12-19

Many of the reviewers for the hardback mentioned typos etc. I have the inexpensive International Edition (paperback) and didn't notice anything significant.

Anyhow, I found this book to be one of the best books on TA as it covers all the supporting theories of TA - not just the usual studies on momentum and price indicators.
It covers business-cycle theory & Dow theory, as well as some other wave theories towards the end.

Overall, the book's structure has been planned very well (and this is unusual for most books on TA). It aims to explain the relevance of technical analysis before taking you briefly into each topic. This helps place everything into perspective and avoids the reader from getting 'lost' in all the technicalities.
It can also help you understand the link between Fundamental Analysis and Technical Analysis.

Like all TA books, it won't give you the complete answer to the markets, but combine this with some other more detailed reference books and it will serve it's purpose.

5 out of 5 stars This book is worth much more than you will pay for!!.......2007-04-01

I am returning to college after a "millenium"... having been out of touch of the financial aid process, not knowing credible sources of info regarding smart ways to optimally secure financial aid money... this book is the guide and "Guru"! It talks to you as though you are a parent trying to understand Financial Aid to help pay for your childrens' college expenses.. Well it helps you to first relax, and know that you don't have to do it all by yourself... no matter how late in the game you've entered. It does not beat around the bush and give you weak links... instead its pretty straight forward, it tells you about the Financial Aid process as it is, and informs you not only about various federal+state aids, but also private ones too... For the student this book is gold indeed... so if you are a parent, certainly read this book thoroughly, because you are bound to find ways you can save and get more help to fund your childrens' educational expenses.. You're an investor, investing in your kids... so by reading this book, you are ensuring that you investment will go a long way! That's smart :-) ...it will also help you to learn about all eligible tax deductions.. so you can intelligently discuss about these with your tax specialist. Great book for parents who are looking at various college savings plans for their children.

Make your children read and understand all that's covered in this book... you are doing it for them.. they need to help themselves too! ... especially because they will need to learn the tricks+tips of scholarships, grants, negotiating for more aid money, etc.. most of which they will need to do at college... so don't let them off the hook... make sure they have really worked this book in and out...

Next, for people like myself returning to college... this book is a must! Cannot emphasize this enough... it will set you ahead of the financial aid game, and will give you the tools to use when negotiating for more money, scholarships, loans, etc... This will be of particular importance to "Independent Students"..

Instead of stressing for college aid/money, do something about it - Go get this book now and spend a silent weekend absorbed in it! Bring out that investor in you :-)

This is an EXCELLENT book for any family that has a child going to college soon. I can not say enough good things about this book. If I could give it more stars I would.

3 out of 5 stars Okay but not outstanding.......2007-01-10

Good information for someone that has not begun the college search but not what I expected for our more indepth searching.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best.......2006-11-28

College Gold is written in plain language and is logically organized. The book is an excellent resource manual that provides essential information in a user-friendly manner. As a HS Guidance Director, I especially recommend College Gold for students and parents just starting out, with little or no knowledge of what lies ahead. Planning and savings suggestions are quite sound as are the sections on evaluating aid "packages," making monetary decisions, and avoiding scams. Overall, I'd rate College Gold as one of the better comprehensive financial aid guides on the market today.

      5 out of 5 stars Great Information.......2006-10-05

I am a financial aid director and this book will really help families with the financial aid process. It's easy to read and the information is right on!
