5 out of 5 stars Did Buffett write this?.......2006-10-15

I've read about 5 "Buffett" books and they ranged from utter garbage (the daughter-in-law books) to the mildly interesting. None really helped me invest better.

This book is different. I've read it probably 10 times now. Every chapter can change they way you think about investing.

The writing is clear and simple.

What follows is a totally groundless statement - i have zero evidence of this - but... the only other writer I know who writes so clearly on investment is Buffett himself, which leads me to suspect he may have been involved in the writing of this book ...or maybe Buffet is the real writer. (apologies to mr vick - take my comment as a compliment if you really did write this)

Even if Buffett isnt the real writer, my guess is that this is the book he would write.

It's my favourite book on investment. I have five or so copies at any one time and hand them out to friends who ask me for investment advise.

A $10,000 investment in Warren Buffett's original 1956 portfolio would today be worth a staggering $250 million ... after taxes! What are his investing secrets?

How To Pick Stocks Like Warren Buffett contains the answers, and shows, step by profitable step, how any investor can follow Buffett's path to consistently find bargains in all market conditions: up down, or sideways. Relatively short and easy to read, How to Pick Stocks Like Warren Buffett is an excellent introduction to the world of value investing. The book is relatively short and should provide a satisfying read.

2 out of 5 stars Misleads readers into thinking Buffett uses the exact method.......2005-02-20

I am an avid reader of Warren Buffett's writings, and I believe that Warren Buffett would disagree with many items in this book. For example, Warren Buffett previously described his method of discounting companies in other articles, and it does not match the author's description.

I can see how this book would be highly rated to someone not familiar with the details of Buffett's own articles and letters. But in my opinion, the book appears to only about 80% in agreement Buffett's previous writings. This book can give the reader a good overview of Warren Buffett's methods if they do not pay strict attention to the author's details.

1 out of 5 stars Not the Buffet way..........2004-07-06

This is book says it about Buffet's way of picking stocks, but it is not. I'm sure Buffet would scream if he ever read this book. It not only isn't Buffet's strategy, it is bad advise too. Don't buy this book. If you've read it, disregard everything you learned before you lose money. Read Buffet or Graham and get it straight from the horse's mouth, and learn the intelligent way to pick stocks. This book stinks!

1 out of 5 stars One of the worst books ever written on investing.......2004-04-27

1) The first quote on the back cover is from Mary Buffett. Mary's claim to fame is that she divorced Warren's son and then got into the investment book business. If you can't do that 'math' or you buy into the '*****' reviews for this book I've got a bridge I'd like to sell you. 2) Throw out the chapter on 'Warren on Arbitrage'. I've worked in equity arb. Most of this chapter is either outright false or highly misleading. 3) Entire sections of this book read as if they were excerpted from Hagstrom's or John Train's books. 4) The only reason I didn't give this book zero stars was it had some nice quips about value investing in general.

3 out of 5 stars straightforward and earnest.......2001-05-27

I admit that I found this book incredibly dull next to the three Motley Fool books I had read previously. I guess I just like some humor and irreverence -- this book is a bit too "straight," although I suppose most investment specialists can't be comedians. The information is useful and well laid out, although I found the Motley Fool books more useful with more layman explanations of concepts like the P/E ratio. Sivy doesn't describe enough what these terms signify -- he pretty much tells you what things are.

Anyway, he does provide some good solid information, it's just that other books out there do what he does and do it better. This book reads (surprise, surprise) like a long article in Money Magazine who Sivy writes for.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent survey of investing from 1996.......2000-09-03

I have been playing with stocks for one year, and have an interest in economics. Sivy's book provided me with a comprehensive overview of investing strategies. The author has a witty and readable writing style. The basics of stocks, bonds, mutual funds, foreign stocks, etc. are all covered. Also covered were the basic investing strategies, including value, growth, business cycle, inflation cycle, income. I suspect that a person with no background in stocks or economics would find this book challenging. This edition is from 1996, and contains some information that has been overtaken by events. Aside from this, I would have awarded this book 5 stars.

3 out of 5 stars A book for someone who is already an investor........2000-08-24

This book is NOT for a beginning investor because a lot of the investment terms and lingo used are for people already familiar with the stock market and how it works.

I am a beginning investor and college student who knows very little about making investments. So I am kind of clueless when he talks about mutual funds and price earning ratios. I think when I purchased the book I neglected to carefully understand the title and thought it was a 'rule book' for really *really* beginning investors who have no clue in the world of finance and money.

Ignore the 3 star ratings. I just couldnt rate it at all. because I had no clue what i was reading.

4 out of 5 stars Good introduction to common stock investing.......1998-10-29

Beginning investors looking for a little general direction will enjoy this book by Money Magazine's Wall Street editor. Sivy recommends active asset allocation as your stock strategy. In other words, hold stocks, bonds and other vehicles in general percentage ranges, and adjust according to your view of the economic outlook. Staying within your ranges will prevent disasters when markets turn. His book also covers growth, income, and value investing, and devotes chapters 10-13 to more advanced investing. It's an excellent primer for investors who want to get started in stocks, and also for those who have been primarily in mutual funds but now want to incorporate common stock strategies into their investing. 2 out of 5 stars Bad presentation.......2007-09-21

I was very excited to find a book that was going to give me more ideas on how to pick stocks using IBD. While this book did give information on IBD, it never got into anything I found helpful in really using to pick stocks. All the author did was present information I already knew by reading IBD myself. Also this was not a pure IBD product the author attempted to mix in several authors advice and techniques into this work by quoting them verbatim. The book was very dry and hard to read and I do not think beginners or veteran traders will find it helpful. It was written by a doctor, who may be a great trader, but I did not like his writing style. I would advise reading all of William O'Neal's book and stick with IBD alone to teach you. Find your stock picks in the IBD 100, you do not need this book.

1 out of 5 stars This book sucks.........2004-03-07

I bought this book a year and a half or so ago and I think it was a bad investment. I figured this book would be a great addition to How to make money in stocks but I was wrong.

This book is basically scanned in pages of parts of the paper telling you about all the economic indicators and other items in Investor's Business Daily.

I feel this book could have been a lot better if Dhun Sethna hadn't spent most of his time talking about such a boring subject... I mean who really wants to interpret economics graphs... I know I don't. He could have discuss how to find the winners (like the title suggests) but from what I remember about this book it is just about what the paper is and all the economic indicators you can find in it. I can clearly see why William O'Neil doesn't recommend this book.

2 out of 5 stars Its not completely worthless............2001-12-30

I did not read the book but I did look it over carefully. I was hoping it would be a clear step by step guide to using IBD to apply the CANSLIM method. There is so much information in the paper that it is not easy to apply all the techniques in an efficient manner. There are almost too many choices and directions possible. This book is not a step by step guide nor is it all that clear. I did find it to be unnecessarily wordy and vague. It just seems to go over the whole paper in a long winded fashion but does not get down to the nuts and bolts of "Smart Investing" as I was hoping it would. Refer to William O'Neil's books for better guidance about how to invest. Also, if you are a subscriber, there is a large amount of useful information on the IBD website at Investors.com.

5 out of 5 stars Long Winded-But Necessary.......2001-04-22

If you are totally new to investing then you should start with "24 Essential Lessons to Investment Success" & "How to make Money in stocks", both by William O'Neil. If after reading those books part of the Investment Business Daily newspaper makes no sense, I recommend this book. Once you feel successful and comfortable in the stocks you pick, you would want to understand the whole picture. Though this book will confuse you in the beginning and I agree with many of the reviews, remember it is a brake down of the newpaper and how you can use each part of it to understand everything of the market and how Investment Business Daily feeds you that information. I strongly recommend it. Puts together the Big Market picture from the pages of the Investors Business Daily paper. It should glue together some loose ends.

2 out of 5 stars Too Many Words, Too Little Information.......2001-04-18

Being a student of William O'Neil's CANSLIM method of stock selection I found this book tiresome to read mainly because I know the subject matter so well. Dr. Sethna was certainly long winded and rambling in his writing style and could have said what he did in a third of the space he used. If you desire to learn about William O'Neil's methods purchase his book, "How to Make Money In Stocks." Lastly, Investor's Business Daily has added many new features since Dr. Sethna wrote this book so some of the information he shares about the paper is dated.

4 out of 5 stars not bad but not great either........2007-08-06

This book provides a cook book approach to evaluating stocks. The concept is good and the approach to applying the concept also good. The main problem with the book is that I do not believe it was edited. There are several glaring errors in the text and it is not very well written either. That being said, it still is worth buying for the concepts that the books presents. What the book really needed was a really good editor to tune it up.

3 out of 5 stars Traditional market analysis.......2007-07-12

This book covers adequately the task of uncovering underpriced and overpriced stocks. Unfortunately the market has pretty well already made the analysis and current market prices reflect the collective judgement of those involved.

Piscaqua Research in a study covering the period 1987-96 found that only 10 out of 145 major pension funds, or just seven percent, out performed a portfolio consisting of a simple 60%/40% mix of the S&P 500 index and the Lehman Bond index respectively.

Or is it logical I ask for you to believe that you can predict which actively managed funds will out perform, or are you overconfident of your skills? If you are trying to find the great fund managers who will out perform in the future ask yourself: what am I going to do differently in terms of identifying the future winning fund managers, than did the pension plans and their advisors? And if you are not going to something different what logic is there in playing a game at which others with superior resources have consistently failed?

If you a really serious in finding an investment technique that will provide you with reasonable return with less risk I suggest the following little book. This is a little book that I have written and contains the essential of how to invest. Just click on the title to find the book. How to Make Money in the Stock Market-Buy 2,500 Different Stocks-Pay no Commission

5 out of 5 stars Intro to Stock Investing.......2007-06-27

I enjoyed the book very much. It was great at establishing sound investment advice. After reading the book, & doing other research I decided to leave it to the professionals. Now I have a better idea how they come to their decisions.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Book On Stocks I have Read So Far!.......2007-04-06

This is certainly the best book on investing in stocks for the individual that I have read so far. Everything is logically thought out and very clearly explained. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to get into individual stock investing who would like to make educated and sensible decisions that really pay off. Reading it has taken me from a complete newbie to having a competent understanding of how the stock market works with an intelligent, easy to follow system for picking successful companies that beat the market with minimal risk. This book is definitely everything it claims to be and a worthwhile investment.

5 out of 5 stars This book does the impossible.......2007-03-05

The author does a superb job of shedding light on a complex subject in a way that's immediately accessible to beginners. He lays out the material clearly, writing in plain English to the extent possible, neatly billboarding the points he wishes to make. Then he makes his points efficiently and drives them home with (welcome) repetition, striking the right balance between simplicity and nuance. Wise investing still takes work -- there's no easy way around that -- but this book details a method that any reasonably competent person may follow. I will refer to it often. Wish it had come out 20 years earlier!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Al Frank: The Philosopher Investor.......2005-09-21

The book is a breath of fresh air, providing a solid value-based strategy for investment togethr with a sound intellectual justification for it. In my more than thirty years of investing life encompassing a bevy of strategies and literally hundreds of books on investment, I have not come across a professionally trained philosopher writing about investment. Al Frank is that investor philosopher. If you want an intellectual challenge coupled with a proven strategy of investing in stocks, read this book. Think, profit and enjoy!

1 out of 5 stars Not much meat.......2003-08-31

Basically this is typical value investing with a small cap bent, though he will buy value at any price. Chapter two covers this and the rest of the book will put you to sleep. He's long winded, add small type and over 350 pages... it was a struggle to finish.

Much of it could have been left out. 50 pages are a review and comments of past years portfolios. Another chapter is on his pet peeves, one on funds, one defending use margin and one on Tech analysis (he doesn't use it for individual issues, but he looks at a few general market indicators to guage risk and overbought levels in the market). Except for a chapter 9 analysis of Ford, there isn't much about selection besides chapter 2.

His returns were made using full margin. His best contibution it to say don't be too rigid on the numbers, be flexible. Usually stocks will be undervalued on a couple measures but not all of them. I'd recommend any other book on value investing.

THE THESIS OF THIS BOOK IS THAT YOU BUY THE MARKETS WORST STOCKS AND HOLD THEM FOR AT LEAST FIVE YEARS HOPING THEY WILL COME BACK TO GLORY. hE BUYS STOCKS THAT HAVE LOW P/E'S LOW PRICE TO SALES AND LOW PRICE TO BOOK. USUALLY THESE STOCKS HAVE LOADS OF DEBT, TERRIBLE PRODUCTs OR ARE IN A TERRIBLE INDUSTRY. eXAMPLE STEEL
Most of the stocks he picks are terrible and will never make you any money and are the riskiest in the market.Example of stocks he tells you to buy in his newsletter kmart, wcom, conseco etc.
all bankrupt. Once in while he gets lucky and has a big winner. Don't count on this. If you want to lose big money read his book and follow his insane advice on the use of margin.

5 out of 5 stars A must for every value investor........2002-03-24

Unlike some books, were authors write about great investors or skilled authors with little practical experience present their opinions, Al Frank is a great investor and a skilled author with lots of practical experience. Thus, the book is a pleasure to read, more comprehensive than most and presents conclusions drawn from decades of value investing in common stocks.

With a folksy, down to earth approach, the author goes over what's most important for a long term investor: Patience, Stock Selection, Diversification and Risk Management. Important financial ratios are also explained and the use of margin is reviewed in great detail. In fact, there are very few investment books which deal with margin as well as this one. This is probably because not many investment book authors have as much experience in this area as Al Frank. However, this is not a get rich quick book, but instead the presentation of a logical, long term seasoned strategy.
