Book Description

According to Michael Panzner, the US is less than two years away from ""financial Armageddon."" When the stock market bubble burst in March 2000, the collapse that followed wiped out over two-thirds of the value of the technology-laden Nasdaq Index and decimated the hopes and dreams of millions of Americans.

Now, imagine not one, but four such disasters looming on the horizon. Four key elements--Debt, Derivatives, Government Guarantees, and the Retirement system--are quickly unraveling, and because they are so intricately connected, there will be an unremitting domino effect. With time running out, this is a disaster-in-the-making on which every American must be informed so they can protect themselves, their families, and their economic well-being before it's too late.

5 out of 5 stars A guidebook for the future.......2007-09-25

Like its topical namesake in the book of Revelation, Financial Armageddon describes tragic calamities at our doorstep. Given the recent developments in our economy, it has come time to talk about when and how the economic collapse will occur, not if.

In what may very well become a prophetic manual for the way our economy will collapse and touch every facet of our lives, Panzner's Financial Armageddon spells out in detail how he sees the fabric of our financial lives unraveling based on factors and circumstances beyond our control. The basic synopsis he offers is that "the United States will soon suffer the fallout of the live-for-today orgy of borrowing and extravagance that has already foisted an untenable economic and financial burden on future generations. (page 3)"

While Financial Armageddon might read as "doom and gloom" to some, it will be seen increasingly as a valuable asset - a guidebook for what may soon come - for those who wish to plan their financial future wisely and minimize risk. Those who desire to keep smelling roses and ignoring the signs of the times will be the first to suffer, for it is those who plan wisely and prepare for the future that are least impacted by external circumstances.

It is for those who desire to understand how our economy will likely unravel that Mr. Panzner has written Financial Armageddon. I suggest picking up a copy in an effort to understand what the future may very well hold.

5 out of 5 stars Staring Into The Abyss.......2007-08-03

There is a memorable scene in Star Wars Episode V where Luke, unware of the worst possible outcome that awaits him, pledges to Yoda, "I am not afrad." Yoda, speaking with 900 years of aquired Jedi wisdom let's the untried and unproven and naïve Skywalker know in certain terms "You will be. You will be." Peter Schiff may not have 900 years on Wall Street but his Jedi skills are complete. He truly sees to other side. Peter takes the blissfully unaware investor by the neck and walks them right up to the edge of the cliff showing them the abyss below. And as Nietzsche said "When you stare into the abyss the abyss stares into you."

Schiff has aquired the title of doomsayer which is inapt. Few investment firms on Wall Street have made more money for their clients as Euro Pacific Captial and few industry analysts are as bullish on the overall global economy. It's the US economy where Schiff foretells financial armegeddon. And he doesn't wish for it. That is also untrue. He is simply telling you. It's real. It's coming. And it's inevitable.

Friday, August 3, 2007, 3:00 PM ECT. Jim Cramer has just appeared on CNBC proclaiming "Financial armageddon is here. THIS IS ARMAGEDDON."

Read the book. Buy it NOW on Amazon and have it overnighted to you. The situation is that dire and that urgent. Give it to all your friends and family to read. Take action before you lose your life savings, everything you own, and everything you ever dreamed of owning.

5 out of 5 stars eyes WIDE open!.......2007-07-09

As I have always been gloom and doom in my outlook of this nation and my life has been spent preparing for one type of disaster or another (Y2K ect..) I can say that I've been proven wrong more than not. I do however believe in the the boy scout motto "BE PREPARED" and it has served me well. This book opens ones eyes to the smoke and mirrors that the Gov't,Big money, and the privately owned FED reserve try to serve up to an un-careing or un-informed populace and does so in a clear and understandable text. I implore anyone who want's another angle on our economy besides the Main Stream media to read this book. Hope for the best but be prepared for what this book outlines and you'll be a winner either way.

4 out of 5 stars One of the better Doom + Gloom books.......2007-06-20

I like to read gloom and doom books. They are more fun reading than crime stories. I remember reading "Bankruptcy 1995" in the early 1990's - a book which predicted the bankrutcy of the United States in 1995. It was a scary reading in 1990, but as we know today, that prediction did not come true. In fact, the majority of all predictions about the future turn out to be wrong. It is not easy to predict the future correctly.

The book under review distinguishes itself from other books on this subject by its willingness to consider extremely dark scenarios in the future. Contrary to most other books, Panzner believes that the future will unfold via a debt deflation first followed by hyperinflation later on. He seriously believes that the Dollar will get more valuable in the future due to the Dollar scarcity caused by the accelerated repayment of debts.

The attempt to analyze the future in terms of inflation and deflation is in my opinion a case of old and obsolete financial thinking. The last major incidences of hyperinflation and deflation occured at least 70 years ago. Since then, the nature of money has changed completely. Today, money is essentially a piece of data in a computer system. Very little cash exists in the world in form of currency. Ben Bernanke is right by emphasizing that it is very easy to fight deflation: just mail to everybody credit card offers with 0% interest valid until the balance is paid off. (Such offers exist already today: 1.99% until the balance is paid off). Although Bernanke did not say it, it is equally easy for the government to fight hyperinflation. Since hyperinflation is characterized by extreme circulation velocities of money, what needs to be done in such a case is simply restrict people's access to their bank balances and credit cards to let's say $100 per day. That will dramatically increase the scarcity of Dollars which in turn will kill any emerging hyperinflation. All of that is easy to implement because money today is not tangible currency (like 60 years ago) but electronic bytes in computer memories. Computers are very powerful. That power can be utilized in order to control the flow of money and economic activity very efficiently.

If the future does not bring deflation nor hyperinflation, how will the future unfold? I believe, in the future we will not run out of money. Instead, we will run out of resources. For instance, gasoline may not be avaiable all the time. Electricity may not be avaiable 24 hours a day (blackouts). Water may not be avaiable 24 hours a day. Certain types of foods may become scarce. I believe that these things are going to happen first before any serious financial crash will occur. More effort is being spent on securing the financial system than money is being spent in securing essential resources for the future. In other words, the future will unfold pretty much in the direction of what happened in the Soviet Union before it collapsed. Everybody had a job and plenty of money. The money had great purchasing power, but unfortunately stores were empty most of the time, that is, money could be not be exchanged against consumer goods all the time. Certain essential things could not be obtained in stores, but on the black market only in form of barter (supplemented by money and alcohol as a form of payment). A development like this would be the logical conclusion of monetary policies started by Roosevelt in the 1930's.

One last remark: Every doom and gloom book should commit itself to stating a date by which the author admits that his predictions were wrong. For instance, if you predict bankruptcy of the United States, please also state a date by which such an event is going to happen at the latest. It does not make sense to predict the bankruptcy of the US 100 years from today. Such a prediction is totally worthless. If no date is specified by which the prediction is going to happen at the latest, there are no means to falsify the intellectual efforts of the author. In such a case, the prediction has only entertainment value.

5 out of 5 stars Written in plain terms, and notable for its painstakingly clear definitions .......2007-06-17

Written by New York Institute of Finance faculty member Michael J. Panzer, Financial Armageddon: Protecting Your Future From Four Impending Catastrophes is a dire warning of the four most severe financial risks confronting Americans today. Private and public debt has been climbing to record levels; the aging population is putting so much pressure on Social Security that eventually retirement will be simply a hopeless mirage; systemic overindulgence in "hedge funds" and other house-of-cards derivatives that depend on assets losing their value to make a profit place negative pressures on the economy. Financial Armageddon does not pull punches in its warnings of doom and gloom, and what raw economic realities can potentially inflict upon Americans everywhere, yet its greatest asset is its solidly practical advice for preparing for the worst. From the importance of prioritizing maintenance investitures over acquisitional investitures (skipping the regular tune-up of a car is more likely to cause more expense further down the line) to knowing when to spend and when to hold off (it's valuable to buy up tangible and practical commodities such as nonperishable food when the threat of hyperinflation reigns, but not when prices are falling), to the singularly invaluable sentiment of "Trust but verify" - the importance of utilizing the internet to thoroughly check out the credentials and track records of any individual or institution with whom one is considering a financial relationship. Written in plain terms, and notable for its painstakingly clear definitions of terms like "derivatives" that cause many a lay reader's eyes to glaze over, "Financial Armageddon" is a must-read for anyone in the unfortunate modern era of ballooning fiscal irresponsibility, not to mention outright swindles. Highly recommended.

One of the best things this book does is points out that it is a CHOICE to live an abundant life. The book points out those wrong mental footprints of to handling finances can be corrected. Then it shares easy to understand, sensible steps to follow in making one's financial abundant life a reality. I read the book the first time and made notes. This is the first popular book on finance I've ever read that didn't make me want to go out and cut my throat because I'd been so stupid and now it was too late! Instead, the authors explain how to think in terms of abundance, not deprivation, and explain how it's NEVER too late.

Another great thing about this book is that it integrates saving and investing into your life, not just your lifestyle, and shows how they can actually enhance your value system.

Buy it. It's the WHAT COLOR IS YOUR PARACHUTE of investing.

A truly wonderful book. However there is a crucial element that must be addressed in light of what is coming down the pike at us "Girls". If you read Arnold's The Great Bust Ahead (or visit the book's website at thegreatbustahead.com) you will gain insights into what may be the greatest depression in history beginning just a few years from now. This will probably affect women the most, and women (and men) of color more than others. So, whatever us Girls can make by following Glinda's advice needs to be protected (i.e. not lost in the coming depression) by reading Arnold's advice.

4 out of 5 stars More about Passing on rather than Protecting........2006-11-01

I thought this book would be chock full of information on how to protect your assets from ruinous or frivolous lawsuits through the use of LLCs or other methods. Although the book does touch on this, by far, the bigger emphasis is on creating revocable trusts to streamline the inheritance issues and the many risks of poor planning in this area. It would be better titled "Passing On Your Financial Assets" and as such it would be an excellent 5 Star book on estate planning. However, I can only give it 4 stars since it's called "Protecting" which I found a bit misleading.

5 out of 5 stars Protecting Your Finances.......2006-09-11

This book is a must read! The book covers so many topics such as: writing a will, protecting your business, protecting your assets, provides sample documents, and much more. This book has definitely expanded my knowledge about protecting my finances. I assumed these techniques were only available to wealthy people. I was so engrossed in the book I read it in two days. I have recommended this book to all of my friends and family.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read to Protect Your Family & Your Financial Future.......2003-03-11

This is a simple, easy to read book about how to protect your money, savings and your assets. It reads like a novel with good stories, yet it has information like a reference book that you can easily refer to over and over again. I had never heard of the authors before, but when I found out it was a Time/Warner Book of the Month Club Selection, I decided to give it a try, and I'm glad I did. You will be too.

4 out of 5 stars An interesting book on a not so interesting topic.......1999-11-30

This book is very readable and clear. It makes a potentially boring topic interesting and understandable. It is insightful and helps make the point that trusts are important for those with even just modest estates. It is a bit repetitious at times and contains a few too many personal stories, but it is otherwise motivating and a very useful guide for those unfamiliar with the legal world.

5 out of 5 stars Best book on estate planning and asset protection.......1998-10-06

As an attorney, I've read many books on estate planning and asset protection. Protecting Your Financial Future is the best treatment of the subject I've seen. It's got powerful info that even financial and legal professionals will learn from, but it's easily understood by the layperson too.

One of the best aspects of the book is its writing style. It was actually enjoyable to read; intermingling strategies with anecdotes that illustrate principles.

Living trusts and other asset protection tools are often used incorrectly. The authors of Protecting Your Financial Future help readers avoid common pitfalls and build wealth with strategies all my clients should use. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has a trust or thinks they will benefit from a trust. This book will give you the answers you need for the best possible plan.

Book Description

Skyrocketing tuitions have become a national concern. The average four-year college degree now costs more than $35,000, and that sum is growing at a phenomenal rate, forcing unprecedented numbers of college students into student-loan debt. In 1995, the Educational Resource Institute issued a report warning that borrowing has exploded to record levels and is expected to double in five years.

Whether they're just beginning to think about paying for college, are currently in school, starting repayment or already overwhelmed with debt, students, as well as recent graduates and parents, find The Guerrilla Guide to Mastering Student Loan Debt an indispensable guide to navigating the student loan maze. In clear, lively and reassuring chapters, it answers such time and money-saving questions as:

What types of loans are available, and how are they different?

How can I get the best possible deal?

What are my options for repaying my loan and can I postpone repayment?

How can I get a forbearance or a deferment?

How can I repair my credit rating?

5 out of 5 stars Know Your Options, and Know Your Rights.......2004-10-29

There is a common theme among college students these days, and those who have attended and quit as well as those (un)lucky multitudes who have graduated. Sometime during the senior year of high school, application forms to colleges are sent in, and admissions and rejection notices are sent a few months later. Along with the admissions forms comes another little form detailing the amount of aid that is extended by the college to the prospective freshperson. This is where all the fun begins, and it quickly snowballs into a pernicious form of indentured servitude.

Ms. Stockwell's book details in painful precision just what happens when a pimply-faced kid signs on the dotted line. First she begins by relating her own experience, and then she delves into the experiences of others. Along the way, she shows how many of us got into the student loan mess, how the financial aid system has evolved (or is it mutated?!) into the monstrous behemoth that it is today (actually at the time she wrote the book), some coping strategies (for it really can't be called anything else) for the inevitable missed payments and default, and finally some suggestions on how the system can(but will not ever) be fixed.

We live in an age of educational opportunity. Anyone with some combination of motivation and money can attend college. Indeed, attendance at college has become necessary in some professions just to keep pace. At any rate, it is a tremendous achievement that folks from just about all walks of life now have the chance to attend college.

However, this does not mean that the powers-that-be have made attendance easy or even free. There is a rather sinister catch attached to the proposition, and it always requires people of limited means to devote years of their lives and of their professional livelihood to servicing some form of debt burden. I have to agree with the author, who said that the best thing to do is to say NO! to all forms of debt- from student loans to credit cards to auto loans, as they all tend to lock you into cycles from which frankly there may be no escape.

This leads into another part of this sinister situation of Faustian proportions. Not long after the freshperson has signed on the dotted line, and just a few short weeks after parking his or her carcass in a smelly, roach-infested dorm room, the credit card people come calling. There literally seems to be a deluge of credit card applications arriving one after another in the mailbox. (However, these days, I have been told by more than a few distressed parents that the card companies don't even wait till the brats have donned their caps and gowns for high school graduation.)

Finally, sometime before college graduation, typically during the beginning of your senior year, some auto company like General Motors comes around and offers to 'help out' the soon-to-be graduated. It seems that they know you are looking for a job, and wouldn't it make a good impression on prospective employers if you rolled in a nice, shiny new car that shows that you are a professional and that you mean business? Fixing you up would be no problem at all- just sign here on the dotted line, and you'd better hurry, as there are only a limited number of this year's model left. Oh and uh, did I forget to mention that there's a really low 2.9% APR and uh, no payments for the first year?

In my mind, there is absolutely no doubt that there is a great deal of collusion between universities, credit card and auto companies in the ongoing mess of indebtedness seen among recent grads and post-grads. Here's a friendly tip: most aid packages have some combination of grants, work study and loans. You can negotiate the combination of the aid you receive. I strongly suggest that you negotiate to get as much work study as possible, and leave the loans, especially the Stafford Loans, as an option. It's what I did, and it meant the difference between finishing with a lot of debt (or not finishing and with a lot of debt as has happened to many acquaintances) and finishing with little or no debt. Too many friends of mine are broke, out of work, living in their parents' basement and have turned dodging dunning notices from student loan companies and collection agencies into a practiced science.

Anyone that is contemplating going to college should read this book. Although I must concede that the book is a a little dated, as there have been some significant changes in the student loan picture in the last six or seven years or so, it does precisely show the progression of events that do occur when one gets overwhelmed with student loans.

Yet, much of the debt mess we see among many students is indeed voluntary. No one is forcing kids to max out credit cards and purchase one (or more) cars before they graduate, but then no one is championing the cause of caution either with any form of credit. Many kids are not simply graduating in debt, they are now matriculating into debt in droves. Please note that all of this comes before contemplating the thorny proposition of a home mortgage!

In sum, in this age of job insecurity and galloping price increases, people need to know the risks when fooling around with any form of credit. I take my hat off to Ms. Stockwell, who had the courage to call attention to this clever ploy to re-institute feudalism among the masses.

All hail King George!

3 out of 5 stars Read this book BEFORE you take out student loans.......2002-05-29

This book really will not help you if you already have student loan debt. If you do, the advice is simple - hunker down and pay it off. If you have no student loan debt, read this book and reconsider your desire to go into debt for your education. You can get a good education on the "pay as you go" method if you do it right. Take it from someone who made all the wrong choices - don't go into debt for your education!! I don't recommend this book if you already have sutdent loan debt - focus on paying it off. Save the money you'd spend on this book and put it toward your loan payoff.

I have found myself graduated and placed in a law career that I never wanted, thanks to my family's pushing a smart but "too nice" young man into a potentially "lucrative" but intensely stressful and blood-spilling career as a lawyer. Of course the family never paid anything because they are simple lower middle class people who had a dream that their bright young son would become a smashing success. So now I have a $100,000 debt and stuck in a career that I dread (I wanted to be a damn scientist, not a LAWYER). This book is pretty good on telling you exactly how the government can wreck your life with its easy to get student loans, but it doesn't have any hands down cure. It is dated already in that a year after it was published congress took away the 7 year waiting period for a bankruptcy discharge. Now you may NEVER have your educational loans discharged, so they will chase you and harass you and try to reposess your things even when you are old and grey, all for your mistaken career choices made as a youth. For those who are sucked into the student loan system without rich parents to bail them out or pay the bills, there is not much anybody can do for you. This book SHOULD BE READ BY ANYONE WHO DOES NOT HAVE ASSETS and is thinking about taking loans to go to school. READ IT because nobody else is gonna tell you how absolutely crushing this educational debt can be to your dreams. Then you will see that NOBODY in their right mind should get into serious nondischargeable debt for what is at best an uncertain hope that you will maybe be able to get a job and pay it back through continuous work through what should be the prime years of your life. READ THIS BOOK BEFORE YOU SIGN THE PROMISSORY NOTE!!!!!!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars About as Good as a Student Loan Book Could Get.......2001-06-28

This book is just fine. I guess the bottom line is you need to make the money to pay the damn things off however. I'd like to see something in a more loompanics sort vein.

5 out of 5 stars This book saved my life!.......2000-08-25

In a panic when facing consolidation of over $100,000 in student loans, I stumbled upon this great book. I then postponed reading it, fearing what I would learn. But, I did read it, and discovered I couldn't put it down. This book makes sense of the history of student loans and how to understand and get through the loan process. There is a wealth of resources, suggestions and information about how to live with student loans and NOT lose your sanity. Schools do NOT adequately prepare students to understand what they are getting into, much less how to manage loan repayment. I only wish I the book had been written before I started my graduate program. It is especially helpful to have this information BEFORE you sign for any student loan.

5 out of 5 stars Hands on and helpful--a must have.......2003-12-02

After recently retiring, I was looking for a book to help me deal with some of the financial and psychological issues that crop up in retirement. I heard a radio interview with the author of this book and immediately purchased a copy of it.

I found the author's advice to be extremely helpful, practical and easy to digest. Most chapters contain a "back to basics" section which will help people who need a primer on certain retirement planning topics. The author then moves forward with more sophisticated advice.

What I liked most was that the author recognizes that each of us has his or her own comfort level when it comes to investments. He also understands that the early years of retirement are stressful and sometimes require us to reinvent ourselves.

5 out of 5 stars Basic Primer on Preparing for Retirement.......2003-09-05

This book is simply written, easy-to-understand, and provides practical advice for everyone. The author recommends a realistic approach to investing that includes buying a diversified portfolio of index mutual funds. Other topics covered are investing in annuities ? fixed and variable, IRAs, and 401(k)s, and insurance (life, health, and disability).

Abromovitz, an attorney and financial educator, provides readers with a well-written explanation of the key components of developing, protecting, and rebuilding decimated retirement accounts. He recommends a pro-active hands-on retirement planning approach. In this 224-page, nineteen chapter book, Abromovitz covers how to make relatively safe investments that will continue to grow, how to plan for health issues and large medical bills, how to maximize your social security benefits, and how your financial safety can be improved by investing in stocks, real estate, annuities and 401(k)s.

There is no earth-shattering advice in this book. However, the author provides straightforward advice that can help individuals get and stay focused on the right track so that they can accomplish their retirement dreams.

Most individuals have not really thought about all aspects of the retirement process and have let the chips fall where they may. The devastating bear market of 2000-2002, unfortunately changed the retirement landscape for millions of individuals whose retirements have been postponed and many potential retirees have been forced to keep working to make ends meet. The reason for this was that most individuals did not understand or consider the risks of investing in the stock market.

By reading, studying, and implementing the wisdom in this book, readers will put the odds in their favor to obtain a secure and peaceful retirement. This book should be required reading by all individuals, whether or not they are approaching retirement since the advice provided will help all readers better manage their financial issues.
