Book Description
Develop a Winning Investment Strategy -- with Expert Advice from "The Nation's #1 Money Manager"
Peter Lynch's "invest in what you know" strategy has made him a household name with investors both big and small.
An important key to investing, Lynch says, is to remember that stocks are not lottery tickets. There's a company behind every stock and a reason companies -- and their stocks -- perform the way they do. In this book, newly revised and updated for the paperback edition, Peter Lynch shows you how you can become an expert in a company and how you can build a profitable investment portfolio, based on your own experience and insights and on straightforward do-it-yourself research. There's no reason the individual investor can't match wits with the experts, and this book will show you how.
In Beating the Street, Lynch for the first time:
* Explains how to devise a mutual fund strategy
* Shows how he goes about picking stocks, step-by-step
* Describes how the individual investor can improve his or her investment performance to rival that of the experts of the investment clubs.

A study in excellence.......2007-02-15
What a great book of explanation. He gives many of his normal habits to us that are away from all the other advise of investors and financial advisors. His whys may sound old fashioned but look at his record and you will be old fashioned also if you could obtain what he did. I will read any and all of his other books now. I only see one listed at this point but will hope to find him writing more. I have been in the Magellian fund since 1986 and his success has proven itself to me personally.
Entertaining and useful.......2007-02-10
This book is a must-read for anyone interested investing. Peter Lynch ran one of the most successful mutual funds in history, the Fidelity Megellan Fund, which averaged an annual return of 29% during his 13 year tenure. He is also ranked by Wall Street as one of the most successful stock pickers on the planet. In Beating the Streets, Lynch outlines his common-sense approach to stock picking. The approach, labeled as "buy what you know" by Lynch, or investing in your "circle of competence" as referred to by Warren Buffet, is a simple strategy the yields results proven by many successful investors. In his book, Lynch goes through his entire process of stock picking from how he discovers a lead through what numbers he looks at to how he investigates the company behind the stock. I found the book to be an extremely accessible, comprehensive, and practical guide that is written in an entertaining and light-hearted manner. I highly recommend this book to anyone that wasn't born with a fortune in their bank account.
The Lynch Classic--Unbeatable, except perhaps Warren Buffett's Annual Reports.......2007-02-04
Lynch makes lots of good points. One of them is as a small investor you can buy into thinly traded stocks on the way up, such as APCC in the early days.
Big funds simply can't get enough stock to make it "worthwhile," an interesting point, usually overlooked by the pros in their writing.
if you want to know how to invest you don't need this book!.......2007-01-29
if you want to know how to invest you don't need this book!
90% of this book is Peter Lynch story
not as good as I expected.......2007-01-22
A lot of repeating in this book. Lack of good ideas.

The second edition of The Nonprofit Sector provides a novel
, comprehensive, cross-disciplinary perspective on nonprofit organizations and their role and function in society. This new, updated edition keeps pace with industry trends and advances as well as with the changing interests and needs of students, practitioners, and researchers. As before, every chapter has been written to stand on its own, providing sufficient background for the reader to follow the argument without referring to other chapters—allowing readers to selectively choose those chapters that are most relevant to a particular course, interest, or issue.
The Nonprofit Sector: A Research Handbook includes twenty-seven new or updated chapters. Relevant chapters from the previous edition have been refined, and new chapters have been added to fill in gaps, making this the authoritative reference for all who want an accessible, perceptive, and all-inclusive rendering of the nonprofit sector. The contributors—prominent scholars in their respective fields—carefully reflect upon the variety of changes in the rapidly growing world of nonprofits, examining a wide array of organizations, international issues, social science theories, and philanthropic traditions and covering a broad range of topics including the history and scope of nonprofit activities in the United States and abroad, the relation of nonprofits to the marketplace, government-nonprofit issues, key activities of nonprofits, aspects of giving to and joining nonprofits, and nonprofit mission and governance. For anyone who wishes to have a deeper understanding of the nonprofit sector, this remains the essential guide.
From reviews of the first edition:
"[This book] is the closest thing to a 'bible' of nonprofit sector research and state-of-the-art social science knowledge as currently exists."—Dennis R. Young, Public Administration Review
"Invaluable to anyone currently engaged in research or policy decisions involving nonprofit organizations or, for that matter, considering becoming involved.”—Jerald Schiff, Journal of Policy Analysis and Management
"An exceptionally useful resource.”—Mark D. Hughes, The Philanthropist
Customer Reviews:
Comprehensive--Yet Practical.......2007-02-05
This volume is meant primarily to be a textbook for master's or Ph.D. level students. Nonprofit theory and cutting edge research is covered by the known academics in the field. The reference section is superb, leading one to further articles to explore an area in more depth. Yet the practioner will also find this book helpful in many ways, trends in funding and volunteering, up-to-date research brought to the practioner's world, etc. Even if you are not a student, if you work in the nonprofit sector you will find this book to be extraordinarily helpful.
A Very Rich Book.......2006-12-07
Handbooks tend to be daunting reading. So you can imagine my surprise when, after reading it through the first time, I found myself wanting to read it through again! This is a very rich book that will be useful to a wide range of readers from experts to beginners in nonprofit sector research.
Beginners will benefit from the comprehensive nature of the collection. The broad coverage will serve as a fine map to guide those who are looking for paths to follow into nonprofit sector practice and research. Like an MRI scan, the depth of each chapter will serve as a map of the ever expanding theoretical and practical knowledge base of the contemporary nonprofit sector.
Readers who have some nonprofit sector experience will find themselves turning again and again to the chapters related to their area of research and practice. The experience of re-reading some of the chapters three and four times each allowed me to appreciate the depth of scholarship embedded in the theories and empirical evidence presented on each page. This is the kind of book you'll want to keep nearby, because something of value will be there to meet you at each read.
Experts in the field are going to find a lot here to their liking as well. The scope of the subject matter covers research from so many disciplines that, no matter what your interests are, you'll find something here that relates to your particular field of research. The volume also presents scholars with many well documented glimpses into the state of the art research on the full gamut of nonprofit sector issues.
The creation of a handbook that is broad in scope, deep in research detail, and useful to both beginners and scholars is something to be celebrated by all those involved in the nonprofit sector. Congratulations to those who worked on this project. You have pulled off a most difficult of tasks for the second time.

WHAT A WONDERFUL TOOL.......2002-10-02
This book is a wonderful tool for any trustee whether new or seasoned.!!!
It is splendidly laid out and easy to navigate.
Every possible problem has been addressed and solved for the family planning to start a new foundation.
Along with that, there is information that can vastly enhance those who are newly appointed to longstanding boards of old established family foundations.
I was very impressed with this book and plan to suggest our foundation buy copies for all board members, associates and staff members.

The Settlement Game: How to Setle an Estate Peacefully and Fairly.......2006-10-21
Being one of five siblings I was not looking forward to settling our dad's estate. I needed real life, practical help! Reading the Settlement Game was an answer to my prayers! Here is a book written by an author who has successfully setteled her parent's estate using practical ideas; she shares these ideas, gives you guidelines and tools so that you actually have something to work with. I felt like I had a friend to help me. Giving each member in the family a copy of the book helped them to know what to expect too. The Settlement Game not only helped me with my father's estate but it will be a great guidline in organizing my own estate. I am defintely refering the book to friends. Each one of us will someday have an estate that will need to be settled; I recommed this book to anyone who cares about keeping peace and harmony in the family.
A practical, "user friendly", and informative guide to arranging a fair division of a departed loved one's estate.......2006-03-11
Confidently recommended reading, The Settlement Game: How To Settle An Estate Peacefully And Fairly by Angie Epting Morris is a practical, "user friendly", and informative guide to arranging a fair division of a departed loved one's estate. Readers will be provided with a proven system for dividing all items in an estate in a fair, peaceful manner; an analysis of personality styles that can help you avoid conflict; useful, practical advice for dealing with all details of an estate, from bank accounts to taxes; handy forms you can photocopy to keep track of all items and miscellaneous expenses.
Focusing on Peaceful Estate Settlement.......2006-02-23
After mother's death, my brother and sisters looked to me to begin the estate
settlement process. The Settlement Game: How to Settle an Estate Peacefully and Fairly has been like a life line to a drowning victim. Anyone can settle an estate, but to do so peacefully and fairly, is another matter. After reading the introduction, I
purchased copies for myself and my siblings. Our home is like returning to another era with beautiful antique furniture, dishes, and many of our old toys. This book outlines a system for distributing these items fairly and peacefully. I particularly liked the spiritual side that the author weaved into the beginning of the book. I
would recommend this book to anyone who is faced with settling an estate and
wants to make sure the process is done fairly and that family relationships remain
unharmed.
Excellent book.......2006-02-12
This book really hit the nail on the head. I would recomend a copy in every family home. I know of many family feuds over estates that this book could have helped.

What can I expect to deal with.......2007-10-20
This book will give you insights into what to expect when "the event" occurs. It should be read before you except the responsibility. An executor is not just another job.
Good overall knowledge.......2007-02-09
This book gives great overview but it is not a do-it-yourself book. You'll still need legal advice. Highly recommend as a read so you can be educated before speaking with a lawyer.
Short, sweet, and to the point.......2006-05-03
After reading this book you can probably be an executor for an estate without hiring an attorney (assuming no legal documents have to be prepared or filed in court). I found this book in the reference section of the Westfield Pubic Library (NJ) along with its companion book: A Family Guide to Wills, Funerals & Probate (ISBN: 081604550X). This book was written for an executor to read, and the companion book concerned much of the same material but for the decedent to read before he or she dies.
I thought this book was great, and that it will help an executor gain a grasp of his or her responsibilities when administering and closing a decedent's estate. It is written without legal jargon. Have you ever had to administer an estate and gone to an attorney for help? Did you expect the attorney to tell you about your duties and delegate as much of the work to you as possible? And did you find the attorney did a lot of work you think you could and should have done? Well, if so, then this book probably could have helped you talk to the attorney and have more worked delegated to you.
This book is as comprehensive as it needs to be to educate an executor about his or her duties. When those duties can be complicated, the authors explain the basics so an attorney can be consulted to provide legal services. Keep in mind that many estates can be settled without any legal help being needed. Thus, I recommend an executor read this book before ever seeking an attorney for help, guidance, or services.
The edition of the book I read was hardbound and very pretty. There was an index of terms in the back of the book. However, I would have liked the book better if there had been a glossary of terms back there, too. Don't worry that the book doesn't have your state in its title. It is written so it is applicable to executors in all 50 states.
I found the book to be deficient in covering (failed to cover) the various tax forms (federal estate & income; state estate & income) that must be filed. They mention them, but I would have liked the book better if more had been written about them. Filing the tax returns is often the most complicated aspect of doing executor work. Most of the other things just take time.
A Must-Have Book For The Newly Appointed Executor.......2004-06-10
I purchased this book months ago to prepare myself for the future when I will have to handle my mother's affairs. To my absolute surprise, I have recently been appointed as administrator of my long lost cousin's estate. Yeap, he died intestate, without a will. Luckily I was just finishing this book so I had a clue what to do next.
The book has already proven to be a valuable resource of information. As I go through the probate process, I am referring to it to help me along. I put Post-It note flags on the tops of certain chapters to speed up the information retrieval. The Table of Contents is well organized.
The only thing I would suggest to the authors is to put a bit more "how to" instructions into the book. For instance, I need to do a Postal change of address. The topic is well covered in the chapter "The Deceased's Mail" but it does not tell you how to locate the Post Office where he once lived. A website address would be most helpful.

Customer Reviews:
Might be so basic it's not worth your time.......2000-01-20
If you're looking for solid guidance as an executer or fiduciary, go elsewhere. "How to Settle and Estate" is the better choice. The handbook gives a scant 7 pages of practical advice on what to do if/when someone close has died. Things like: Contact the funeral director, determine your parent's wishes concerning the funeral, ascertain whether your parents have already paid for their funeral, notify friends, locate the original copy of the will - - you get the idea. I was very disappointed especially given the glowing reviews provided by others.
Rare find........1999-03-08
Most books on estates and trusts are simply clueless in dealing with anything except for numbers and laws, as seen from the perspective of someone setting up a trust.
This book views the subject as a set of human issues, from the perspective of a trust beneficiary.
Though there are no other books on this subject matter to compare this one with, I thought that it did the job well.
Good presentation of "Plus's & Negatives" of alternatives.......1999-01-28
This book is very well written and organized without being "over legal." My recently deceased Father, who was an attorney speciallizing in Estate Law, always down-played Trusts (although he set one up for himself.) From this writing, I now see why they are not for everyone. I plan to purchase a copy for each of my siblings, as our Mother ages, to keep us on the same "wavelength."
A very good book!.......1999-01-06
As a potential beneficiary, I found this to be a very helpful and very readable primer on estate planning, the legal issues, and the emotional fallout that can occur as a result of inheritances. The advice given is all good. The appendices and lists of other contacts are very good. I was disappointed, however, that the author did not include any discussion on: the importance of titling of assets to aid in the estate planning; and how election of beneficiaries for insurance policies, retirement accounts, trusts, and financial accounts can affect the estate plan.
An excellent book for all people who may inheret someday........1998-12-29
This book is well-written and is split into sections for persons who may inheret, persons who's loved ones have died, and persons who have already inhereted. It discusses how to approach parents to determine what plans they have made, and what to do if they do not want to discuss their plans. It explains what a person should do in setting up "his" own estate, and discussing it with children. It lists a large number of resources (support groups, financial, philanthropic, and psychological advisors, and extensive printed materials). If you plan to leave money to anyone, or any entity, this is a good book to read.

Hope you find it helpful.......2000-12-21
This book will also be useful to people going through a divorce, or whose divorce is several years old but they have never had a QDRO done. Getting a QDRO prepared and accepted by the plan is ESSENTIAL; your divorce decree or separation agreement alone is not enough to obtain your share of your former spouse's pension benefits. Further information is available from the author at QDRO Solutions, Inc. in Augusta, Georgia (706) 650-7028.

For some families, homeschooling or alternative learning is a better option than traditional school. In Trust the Children, Anna Kealoha provides parents and teachers with a wide range of activities and approaches to teaching a comprehensive list of subjects, from "Addition" to "Zoology," with an emphasis on creative art, music, and natural science, as well as the more traditional school curricula. Throughout the text, Kealoha emphasizes fostering a love of learning and self-motivation.
Kealoha, a long-time proponant of homeschooling, reviews the history and philosophies of the alternative learning movement, gives details on how to create a homeschool, and generally makes a strong case for taking control of your children's educational process. For those considering homeschooling their children or just exploring educational options, this book is an excellent resource. For parents sticking with more traditional forms of schooling, Trust the Children provides wonderful, fun, supplementary activities to do with your kids.
Customer Reviews:
Trust this book!.......2006-01-16
Anna Kealoha is clearly a connoisseur of teaching and learning, and she is happy to share her "secret recipes" for joyful and successful home education.
This encyclopedic cookbook of recipes for learning is jam-packed with creative ideas that will appeal to parents and children of all ages. It is incredibly comprehensive, with a wide variety of games, curriculum outlines, inspirational essays, lists of resources, and more.
My husband likes the logic puzzles and book lists. My older daughter likes the math section, where she finds endless inspiration for charting, graphing, and calendarizing her life. My youngest finds the word games exciting. And I find a welcome surprise on every page!
So, like Grandma's recipe book, this wise and wonderful guidebook has never yet made it onto the bookshelf at our house -- because someone is always using it!
A disappointment.......2001-06-27
This book had the potential to be really good, but it does not live up to this potential. Kealoha indulges herself in a brief 2 paragraphs about homebirth because "homeschooling is a natural continuation of homebirth..." While I support homebirth, this book is not about homebirth and 2 paragraphs cannot begin to treat the complex issues surrounding birth. To me, and possibly to other readers who, like me, are/were unable to birth at home, the statement that "parents should always be in complete control of the birthing situation and ... and should not readily give away their birthing power to the medical establishment" is ignorant and offensive, and smacks of snobbery.
Ignoring the extraneous and poorly-worded birthing topic, there is much that is useful in the book. However, there is also a great deal of 'filler' material that bore an unhealthy resemblance to the dittos and busy work that I remember from my own public school days. This book should have been written and edited with greater care. I imagine the author decided to write a book about alternative homelearning, wrote a few worthwhile paragraphs, then collected material willy-nilly to make a full-length book.
A better approach might be to write about homelearning as a personal endeavor and, when the material has piled up quite naturally, to edit ruthlessly, before even considering publication.
My favorite "burn out" healer!.......1999-05-25
You will not find repeats from homeschool help books here! It is a fun and extremely creative book full of educational games, most used spelling words, fantastic quotes, play-dough recipes, teaching ideas, writing ideas, memory tips, art ideas, much much more! A really fun fun and stimulating book for all ages and all experience levels. It is not strictly from a Christian perspective and I find myself mentally replacing her few references to a high power with the words "God of Abraham, Issac, and Jacob" but not a problem. Very non-denominational. My favorite part is where she has you visualize your perfect learning space....as a project for planning but with involvment from kids. Describe the lighting, the art, the books, the colors, the nature stuff, the seating, the work space, etc. and with her own helpful ideas. This is a "learning space" and not a "classroom". A real inspiration for that hs burn out that sets in once in a while. Not a book that you read from cover to cover, but one you keep going back to often and skipping all around. Especially for those with a desire to incorporate some unschooling ideas. Worth buying!
Highly recomended!.......1999-03-25
As a homeschooling mother of four, the best testament for this book came the day the children began to use it for ideas and inspiration. Anna Kealoha has a beautiful and thoughtful attitude about how, why and when to teach our own whether homeschooling or not.
A fantastic resource for parents and other educators.......1998-10-24
Anna Kealoha provides as a successful mother of four and homeschool teacher provides an insightful ideology of teaching. Her experience also crafts this book as a resource that is abundant with a myriad of wonderful ways to learn.
As a pioneer of the home and school method, what Kealoha calls blend schooling, she offers a revolutionary way to look at education. She accomplishes this noteworthy task in a very practical and straightforward manner, drawing on academic theories, but only engaging that which is crucial to a parent's or educator's knowledge.
The result of this conglomerate of philosophy and practical wisdom is a wealth of information sure to assist any person concerned about their child's education.
