Having heard Luntz interviewed on Talk Radio several times, I thought this might be just the book to give me insight into the word smithing that goes on behind the scenes in politics.

Unfortunately, Luntz' writing style is bland, droll, and boring. So much so, that the reader's mind wanders almost immediately.

Perhaps there was an unimaginable recovery after the first forty or so pages, but I find it highly unlikely.

In summation, when I finish a book I deliberately leave it where someone else can find and hopefully enjoy it. With Luntz' book, I threw it in the garbage.

Frank Luntz does a great job of driving across that it's not what you say, it's what people hear. Although the book had a lot of political references, the lessons to effective language can be applied to any walk of life.

Dr. Luntz illustrates his 10 Rules of Effective Language in the subtitle of his book Words that Work: It's Not What You Say, It's What People Hear. His 10-rule, 10-word system proves the power of language.

Disturbingly accurate examples show the impact and importance of language. What gets wired in us and why? What moves us emotionally? What makes us spend? What connects us? Words are ripples.

Lutz reveals how we get so caught up in words that we fail to communicate. Consider leaders who speak in alphabet soup and spoil our language and understanding.

Like fine embroidery, words follow design; and design is seen differently by everyone with eyes.

Using case studies as examples, Luntz makes points about how passage of time affects words, how disordered words can cause dissension and how new words shade new meanings.

Most of all, he states, what we say is who we are. He's right. Think about it.

2 out of 5 stars Brevity as an Effective Communication Skill (would that it were!).......2007-09-10

Mr. Luntz sites brevity as an effective communication skill, yet he goes on and on and on with his examples and repeats himself throughout the book.

He uses the book as a vehicle to promote his Republican platforms, which is boring and annoying.

He is a little impressed with himself and is not afraid to share that with the reader. An especially distasteful example of this is his self-serving introduction about performing for Democrats and celebrities at Ariana Huffington's home.

He tries to imitate Steven Levitt's style of writing but he's just not that interesting or cool.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in Public Speaking or persuasive writing. Heinrichs keeps his readers interested in everything he has to say through the use of real-world and pop culture references. Random bits of information in the margins keep every page interesting and well worth your time.

This is a great book if you like the subject matter. But don't think you are going to walk away ready to put all this into practice in your next public address or debate with a recalcitrant teen. Keep in mind the author's subtle point that the book effectively represents a summary session on a discipline that is thousands of years old. Not that you won't have fun trying it out though.

This is an excellent work and I highly recommend it. I just completed a class in composition and rhetoric at college and this should have been the text book. It is funny but highly informational at the same time.

I enjoyed the book so much that I signed up to received regular emails illustrating "figures" of speech, as they are used popular media. Jay Heinrichs presents the fundamentals of rhetorics in an unpretentious and transparent manner. A lot of information is presented, and I have come to regret, like Heinrichs, that rhetoric is not taught in schools. I would have benefited from having learned these concepts in grade school. Having been persuaded the power of these techniques, I did get a little bored with the ending, where he makes a case that a rhetorically-trained society would be a more democratic one. While I enjoyed the book tremendously, I didn't give it a "5" because I felt the production of the book was poor. I had to send back my first one because it was defective (missing 30 pages), and the layout of the pages looks like it was done by a high-schooler. Also, I thought the conclusion a bit anticlimactic.

Jay has written a thoroughly enjoyable book that is not only informative, but funny. Many of the concepts Jay writes about I feel I was following naturally, but never saw written down so succinctly. It is good to know that other people enjoy the useful form of argument, the art of rhetoric, still. I feel that most people I meet these days shy away from a good old fashioned debate, just for the intellectual fun of it! My Italian wife was born and raised in this rhetorical way, and this book reminded me how lucky I am to be with someone who can argue, without fighting.

I am an acoustical and systems design consultant, and prior to that have held jobs in sound contracting and public assembly facility technical operations for a total of approximately 25 years. As anybody who has worked in the entertainment, performing arts, hospitality, or religious world can attest, I come into contact with more than my fair share of difficult people and tense situations.

This book and the courses authorized or taught by its author were highly recommended to me approximately 15 years ago by a police lieutenant who gave a guest lecture in a criminology class I was taking in college. This same officer also mentioned the book at an in-house training event at the university sports/concert arena where I worked at the time. It is with no small amount of embarrassment that I must report that it took me until last year to "get around to" buying and reading this book. I certainly could have used its advice, even years before it was written!

Suffice it to say that Verbal Judo is the type of book that is enlightening upon the initial read-through, but whose true value only comes from steady effort to change one's behaviors from long-held bad habits. I believe learning would be far more effective with ongoing practice and coaching, just as with a physical martial art. However, until such a dojo opens its doors in my fair city, I shall have to make do with re-reading the book and discussing its application with others who have been similarly blessed by its wisdom.

We are taught Verbal Judo in my line of work. It's an outstanding program. The book goes into how the program originated and explains it in detail. If you're into law enforcement, security or EMS this book should be mandatory reading.

I have heard the term "verbal judo" tossed around at work since first becoming a Deputy Sheriff with a metro Atlanta Sheriff's Office almost a year ago. For a few years verbal judo was taught to all new deputies but apparently our department let our certification lapse and as such when I joined it had ceased to be taught.

Well I want to be the best deputy that I can be and thus I went and ordered this book. I couldn't put it down! I carried it with me while I worked at the jail and read it in my office on my down time. In two days I finished the book and felt like I had a new weapon to add to my arsenal when dealing with people.

I liked the book so much, I actually loaned it to another deputy on my shift and like wise he couldn't put it down. Another deputy saw him reading the book, asked him where he got and she then proceed to track me down and ask if she could borrow the book next.

The books made me rethink all the altercations I have had at the jail and even in life. How I could have handle things better. As I prepare to go to academy in September and then shortly afterwards, the road, I feel that by taking the time to educate myself on this vital concept, I have greatly helped prepare myself for not only the road but for life itself.

This book is valuable for writers who are not yet experienced with writing extensive research papers or entering ongoing debates that demand a summarization of previous arguments. Though much of this book is filled with writing templates which may or may not help writers of nonfiction, they are a good starting point to open up discussions on important issues. Learn how to summarize what someone else has said, or how to give an unbiased overview of past arguments. I'd say this book is essential for high school level writers, or even young college students, but not for creative writers whatsoever.

This nifty little book is a great tool for teaching composition to students who struggle with writing. The explanations and sentence templates clarify the structure of academic argument essays, and give students a foothold in writing. The compact size is a plus. I've recommended it to other teachers in my "Teaching Writing to Students with Learning Disabilities/ADHD" courses and workshops.

After struggling a whole semester in my graduate program on my writing, I obtained a copy of this book and realized that I did not fully understand the academic writing. I didn't know that academic writing was about persuasive writing.

Since reading the book, my writing, my thinking and even how I articulate my thoughts have improved exponentially. Not only have I suggested it to my colleagues, who also love it, I will be recommending it to new graduate students. It's an indispensible resource that I plan to read again and use as a constant resource for writing my dissertation.

Howard Gardner, best known for his theory of intelligence, has written a thought provoking and intriguing book. The title of the book is somewhat misleading, as it deals more with leadership and communication, than with changing the behavior or personalities of individuals. Thus, if you are looking for a self-help book, a book on personal change, or a text on psychotherapies, then this is the wrong book for you. The book is more appropriate for political leaders, corporate leaders, or new supervisors, looking for some non-traditional ideas on the leadership process and on how to influence others. It may take some work to convert the ideas offered here into practice, but Gardner's book should prove interesting to those looking for some creative concepts that are not found in the typical business text on leadership.

A very boring book written by a true academic trying to help hands on people. I would suggest reading a book written by someone who actually influences people on a daily basis rather than this book which is written by someone who read about it somewhere else.

I recommend you skip the first part of the book and go straight to the epilogue. The book seems well researched and annotated. Gardner seems even handed about the subject, with no axe to grind. Mainly he presents a set of stories, and classifies the events in them according to frequently recurring phenomena (his 7 Rs) that inspire people to change their minds. I feel it's a step forward, but I had hoped for more. It's an old problem domain (one thinks of Aristotle's "Rhetoric"), and it remains mysterious. Most of the stories seem to revolve around faculties and universities and Harvard and Harvard alumni, sufficiently that I think Harvard Hubris taints it. Even if the ideas are good, and even if the stories support them, I'd prefer that Gardner get further out of the ivory tower, out of the Harvard parochialism, and into the real world. The ideas do seem valid, and I get the feeling Gardner knows much about how people think. But you probably should get "Selling for Dummies" if you wish to set sales records this quarter.

4 out of 5 stars A Perceptual Map for Changing Minds.......2006-12-15

Whenever I meet new clients, they tell me that if they can just get those who disagree with them to agree they will have no more problems. Embedded in that observation is a belief that they have all the facts and have correctly interpreted those facts. A corollary is that anyone who disagrees is either misinformed or an idiot.

Usually, what I find instead is that my new clients have listened very well to what people have been telling them and haven't explained their own point of view very well. The right solution is usually to create a new solution together and implement as a cooperative team.

Somewhere along the way, the new clients forget the "us" and "they" mentality and wonder what in the world I did to help them. The eventual solution seems obvious in retrospect . . . and they forget that there was ever disagreement. That's how subtle the process of changing minds is. Except for the most self-aware, we just wake up one day with a new set of ideas. I'm reminded of the advertisement for FedEx where the leader asks for ways to cut costs. A shy man quietly suggests using FedEx. Everyone ignores what he says until the leader repeats the idea . . . and then everyone applauds. The shy man challenges the leader who defends himself by saying that he changed the hand gestures used to make the pronouncement . . . and that made all the difference.

In other words, we love to be in charge . . . even when someone else has changed our mind.

The whole process remains mysterious. After reading Changing Minds, those who find the process mysterious will continue to find it so. But those who have some insight into the process will find meta-models for structuring their strategies and tactics of persuasion and education.

The first 67 pages of the book encapsulate Professor Gardner's valuable work on cognitive thinking, including multiple intelligences, mental representations, and their interaction in six arenas of mind changing. At this point, many eyes would roll at the thought of such a complex matrix.

But Professor Gardner provides relief for the reader by using incredibly subtle stories to capture the primary ways to use multiple intelligences and mental representations to good effect in various mind-changing arenas.

To give you a sense of how subtle these stories are, Changing Minds has a precise example that I can apply to a mind-changing problem that I perpetually face, helping people appreciate the potential for 2,000 percent solutions (20 times better results from the same time and effort). Yet, I had to read the example a number of times before its power sunk in for me. I'm sure at some subconscious level I got the point sooner, but my conscious "aha" took a while. And I've read many of Professor Gardner's earlier books involving some of the same examples.

Professor Gardner is well known for having been the recipient of a MacArthur fellowship, the so-called "genius" award. With this book, I began to see for the first time the full range of his genius. It's impressive.

What's my advice for you? Read this book several times. Put it down and read it again in a year. In the meantime, read some other books about changing minds (on topics like negotiation, persuasion, story-telling, and so forth). Then, it'll all come together for you.

I had pretty high hopes for the book Changing Minds: The Art And Science of Changing Our Own And Other People's Minds by Howard Gardner. It looked like it would be a good book for learning the art of, well, changing peoples minds. Instead it was an academic journey that I found difficult to draw applications from...

Gardner puts forth his theories of mind change based on three factors... four "entities" of mind change (stories, theories, concepts, and skills), six "arenas" of mind change (from nations down to one's own person), and seven "levers" of mind change (all words that start with "re", like reason, resources, and resonance). He uses a number of examples from history to show how ideas and people were able to move others from one mindset to another. On the surface, it sounded like an interesting premise that I could apply in my day-to-day activities. And at times, the writing almost succeeded. There'd be glimpses of the person behind the writing, almost as if there was a conversation going on. Then there'd be a retreat to academic analysis and pacing that made it a chore to slog through. His attitudes and preconceptions are also quite evident. For example, he seems to hold Darwin and his theories in high regard, while denigrating "fundamentalist" Christianity. Granted, this wasn't a book on keeping an open mind, but I didn't quite want to be labeled as ignorant if I don't happen to agree with him or hold the same views in life.

Someone who is heavily into academic theory or the study of the human mind might well find this interesting. But if you're a busy professional looking for practical insights to work with, this is going to be a real stretch...

    The basics of academic writing are fairly straightforward. We need clear reasoning, hence a clear explanation of the basics of logic and of fallacies. We need to explain to students how to select research materials, how to distinguish trade books from academically kosher texts, and so on. And we also need an efficient writing guide that addresses these issues. This is not such a text.
    Firstly, the text gives thin and often confusing advice on logic. Where Wood discusses critical thinking and fallacies, the explanations are very short (just five pages of a 750 page text concern fallacies, for example) and there are no real- world examples of the fallacies discussed. As such, the relevance of basic logic to the art of critical reading is not really obvious to the novice. This is bizarre, given that many of the (non- academic) reading examples in the text(such as Rush Limbaugh on 'femi-Nazis') are basically wall to wall fallacious, and much of the right wing conservative nonsense in the text's reading section is simply not diagnosed as such. Further, Wood's explanations of basic logical concepts are inexplicably confused- she gets inductive and deductive logic quite the wrong way around (p.201)- an error that would get any critical thinking tutor fired. This paucity of clarity is evident in some truly shocking advice given the student: advice that rather rejects the whole principle of research and cogent argumentation in the name of some muddled epistemic relativism that holds that everyone has a unique perspective that deserves respect. In particular, she advises authors to not clearly articulate their arguments for a given proposition because "a stated warrant [premise] negates the rich and varied perceptions and responses of the audience by providing only the author's interpretation and articulation of the warrant" (p.139). This emphasis on such irrelevant issues as 'establishing common ground'and 'establishing the rhetorical situation' makes much of the text worse than useless in trying to teach what college writing entails and requires. In suggesting that the misreadings of the reader are more important than clearly articulating one's own argument, Wood is, quite frankly, talking rubbish.
    The text does include some solid examples of argumentative writing (such as Martin Luther King Jr's "Letter from Birmingham Jail") but there is no real explanation as to why such texts are persuasive without being fallacious. Further, many of the better essays in the text are far more sophisticated than the body text, making the overall work feel quite unbalanced.

    I have mixed feelings about this book. I strongly support the idea of presenting a broad range of arguments all related to one core issue, but I suppose I feel that this book didn't do a particularly good job at making that concept come to life.

    Some of the topics, such as "Frontier," seem too broad to really stimulate much of a discussion, and also too rooted in history to have much of an application for opinions on modern issues. The layout and visuals are also not very well done, which will be a turnoff to the reluctant pupil.

    That being said, there are many topics that are extremely relevant, such as war, family values, and civil liberties; these topics are illuminated by some great thinkers, such as Benjamin Franklin, Studs Terkel, and Gloria Steinem. There is also inclusion of some texts that you wouldn't think of as being centered around history or politics, such as an excerpt from "The Great Gatsby."

    I haven't seen later editions, and I can only hope that they've improved upon this solid concept.

    I loved this anthology,partly because of the very useful introductory materials on arugment and partly because of the range of readings.The first four chapters of the book work as a good intro to writing essays, conducting research, and understanding arugment, and the rest of the book not only includes a great variety of readings, but also offers a number of visuals and student papers, both of which have gone over very well wtih my students.

    This text covers a range of genres and eras. The pedagodical approach enables instructors and students to focus on the core issues of argument without getting lost in the terminology of some models (i.e., Toulmin). More visual materials would be helpful but the book does address visual rhetoric in a way that emphasizes argument.

    Maybe I'm just down on anthologies in general, but I didn't have a lot of success in teaching this text. Although it successfully presents perspectives from a number of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds, the questions provided with the texts were frequently inane and the texts themselves were often cut in awkward and inappropriate ways.
