Money maven Suze Orman's latest book, Women & Money addresses the complicated (and often dysfunctional) relationship women have with personal finance. Orman's direct, non-condescending style is perfect for this subject matter--she begins with the premise that "Women can invest, save, and handle debt as well and skillfully as any man" and then tackles the important question--"So why don't they?" Designed to educate and inspire, Women & Money also offers a "Save Yourself Plan," a five-month program that "delivers genuine long-term financial security." Want to know more? Watch a video message from Suze below, and take a gander at the first chapter of Women & Money--you'll be "controlling your destiny" in no time. --Daphne Durham

Read the First Chapter of Women & Money

For Women Only

I never thought I'd write a book about money just for women. I never thought it was necessary. So then why am I doing just that in my eighth book? And why now? Let me explain. All my previous books were written with the belief that gender is not a factor on any level in mastering the nuts and bolts of smart financial management. Women can invest, save, and handle debt just as well and skillfully as any man. I still believe that--why would anyone think differently? So imagine my surprise when I learned that some of the people closest to me in my life were in the dark about their own finances. Clueless. Or, in some cases, willfully resisting doing what they knew needed to be done. I'm talking about smart, competent, accomplished women who present a face to the world that is pure confidence and capability. Do you mean to tell me that I, Suze Orman, who make my living solving the financial problems of total strangers, couldn't spot the trouble brewing so close to home? I don't think I'm blind; I just think that these women became very, very good at hiding their troubles from me.Why not? They had years of practice hiding them from themselves.

Book Description

Why is it that women, who are so competent in all other areas of their lives, cannot find the same competence when it comes to matters of money?

Suze Orman investigates the complicated, dysfunctional relationship women have with money in this groundbreaking new book. With her signature mix of insight, compassion, and soul-deep recognition, she equips women with the financial knowledge and emotional awareness to overcome the blocks that have kept them from making more out of the money they make. At the center of the book is The Save Yourself Plan—a streamlined, five-month program that delivers genuine long-term financial security. But what’s at stake is far bigger than money itself: It’s about every woman’s sense of who she is and what she deserves, and why it all begins with the decision to save yourself.

Join the Movement to Save Yourself with this Unprecedented Offer to Readers of Women & Money:

Suze Orman believes that having an account of your own is the cornerstone of long-term financial security, and so she has begun a national movement called Save Yourself to turn this wish—that every woman have an account in her own name—into a reality. She is joined in this crusade by the financial brokerage firm TD Ameritrade, which has come up with an extraordinary offer for readers of WOMEN & MONEY. Follow Suze’s Save Yourself Plan and open an account in your name with TD Ameritrade. Commit to an automatic deposit of at least $50 per month for twelve consecutive months, and TD Ameritrade will provide the incentive in the form of a $100 deposit into your account in the thirteenth month. In other words, you save $600 or more over the course of a year, and TD Ameritrade will reward that effort with a $100 bonus. Learn more inside the book or at www.saveyourself.com.

Suze Orman Shares Investing Common Sense with Her Book Women & Money ~ Owning the Power to Control Your Destiny

By Lisa Manyon [...]

Money is a topic you either embrace or avoid. Orman's book delivers straight talk on investing for women and building individual wealth.

Personally I've always know just enough about investing to put some money away each month and I rely on financial advisors to steer me in the right direction.

Suze shares a candid look at her life and how she got to where she is now. Plus she offers a no nonsense approach to making sure women begin to really think about taking care of their own business.

With an uplifting vein of optimism about what is possible throughout the book, Orman successfully illustrates traits and tactics to help women thoughtfully approach investing.

Orman's 8 qualities of wealthy women have been shared on national talk shows and cannot be stressed enough.

Qualities 1 and 2 are harmony and balance. These are said to be the most important qualities because they are the foundation for all other qualities.

Quality 3 is courage. Orman writes that "Courage gives harmony expression. When your thoughts and feelings are one, courage helps you manifest them in the form of words and actions."

Quality 4 is generosity. Orman points out that woman tap into this almost too quickly. We tend to be overly generous with our time, support, love and money. The true measure of generosity, according to Orman, is being able to allow money to come into your hands and out through your heart.

This was a concept I can relate to. Orman challenges women to look at why and what they give and how it makes them feel. She also offers six rules for giving (but, you'll have to grab a copy of the book to find out what these are).

Quality number 5 is happiness. According to Orman when you find the courage to live your life in harmony and balance, you understand and practice generosity, happiness will spontaneously appear.

And perhaps the most important point she shares about happiness is this; "Happiness is not a luxury. It is a necessity for true wealth."

Quality number 6 comes in the form of wisdom. Who doesn't want to be wiser?

According to Orman, wisdom is more than intellectual and not directly related to education. Wisdom is an express result of tapping into your core beliefs to make the right decisions for yourself.

The 7th quality is cleanliness and is all about the importance of order and organization. A laundry list of situations that subtract from your wealth status include;

- Not knowing where your money is
- Not having a systematized filing system for important documents
- Pulling crumpled bills and receipts out of your purse
- Maintaining a vehicle that looks like a garbage can
- Having closets that are filled with junk and clutter.

I am sure most of us can relate to at least one area we need to work on. I have to admit, as organized as I am, I could relate to a couple of those scenarios. Orman's philosophy really makes sense and I've corrected my personal problem areas. My first order of business was donating clothing I had not used or worn in the past year to charity.

The final quality is beauty. Orman ties all the qualities together by noting beauty is what you achieve when all the qualities are combined.

To some it may seem strange that the qualities of wealthy women are included in a book on investing. However, if you personally don't possess the qualities it will not be as easy for you to achieve your wealth potential.

In addition to the foundational building blocks Orman shares solid advice on choosing the right investor, the importance of having one personal savings account in your name only and discusses investment options in layman's terms so anyone can get started right way.

Book Description

Bishop Jordan has written a stellar work that is guaranteed to free the mentally enslaved, acquit the wrongfully charged, and bring healing to the sick. The Laws of Thinking is not a work for the shallow-minded person. It is demanding and challenging. It is neither intended to be used as the basis for unmerited criticism nor as sermon material for the minister having difficulty receiving a fresh work from the Lord. It was written with a very clear aim: to provoke spiritual thought. Bill Gates' Microsoft, Oprah Winfrey's Harpo Productions, Stephen Spielberg's DreamWorks, and even his own Zoe Ministries all began with a thought.
Every invention, university, book, song, business, home, skyscraper, movie, stage play, and baby began when someone chose to think. Nothing happens without thought. Creation did not happen without God's thought. Bishop Jordan's first objective is getting you to think.

I'VE READ THE LAWS OF THINKING BY BISHOP E. BERNARD JORDAN AND IT WAS AWESOME! THIS BOOK MOVED ME INTO ACTION AND CHANGED MY LIFE. IF YOU'RE READY FOR A SHIFT, THIS IS A MUST READ !!!!

5 out of 5 stars Destiny is a matter of choice.......2007-09-11

The Law of Thinking is definitely a must read. It will motivate you to start acting on ideas and dreams you thought were unreachable. Bishop E. Bernard Jordan teaches Destiny is not left up to chance but a matter of choice. He is the Master Prophet who brings life to visionary ideas. So if you are tired of (J)ust (O)ver (B)roke get this book for you and a friend and start living the way God expected you to.

5 out of 5 stars The Laws of Thinking is the Law of the Land.......2007-09-11

As a man thinketh so is he states Proverbs 23:7 from the Wisest Man Who Ever Lived, The Great King Solomon..Bishop E. Bernard Jordan gives us the 20 Secrets to Using the GOD-GIVEN Divine Power of Mind... I Cor 2:16 states that who has known the Lord to instruct Him, yet we have the Mind of Christ...This Divine Mind within empowers us to manifest prosperity which is a benefit of salvation or the Greek definition soteria which means peace, prosperity, health, wellness all of which is defined in the Laws that our wonderful Master Prophet teaches in this book from the Law of Becoming to the Law of the Harvest...this is a step by step manual for those Christians who are looking beyond the letter......and beckoned by the spirit to come into the DEEP...

5 out of 5 stars En-POWER-ing! Beware: Likely not palatable by Fundamentalists.......2007-09-10

I found Bishop Jordan's work so inspiring, enpowering and en-LIGHT-ening (as in shedding LIGHT on one's spiritual nature and relation to God, taking one out of DARKNESS)that I now own both the book and the CD and am working my way through his workbook. (Available from his site.) If the belief system you have chosen will allow you to consider other view-points without FEAR, that I recommend it highly, (especially for "Rhinos" - ie, entrepreneurs) so as to help manifest God's GOOD in your life. Remember, the validity of your belief system manifests in its FRUITS.) Alas, I could see "Fundamentalists" or "Literalists" taking offense at some thoughts expressed in it. One of my favorite parts in the book is when Jordan cites a instance when precisely this happened and a congregation member gasped "Bishop Jordan thinks he's God!" and he replied "NO! God thinks he's ME!"

May your Blessings ensue...

1 out of 5 stars Home Owner Beware.......2007-10-17

This will be short. I have already wasted enough time ready the book (actually I stopped reading in Chapter 9) At first, I thought the examples were funny and than I realized there may be people reading this book that actually are taking notes. This is intended for those few. Seek out the help of a Professional Financial Advisor. This book should come with a warning label.

1 out of 5 stars don't waste your money on this book or its strategy.......2007-10-05

First of all, the author has enough material for a magazine article at best and she has padded and stretched it into a book. That makes for an annoying read.

Secondly, her math is deceitful. She says to borrow the equity from your home at 8% and put that money to work getting an 8% return and you will end up with a huge pile of money. What about the payments? Oh, yeah. She subtracts those as a lump sum at the end from your pile of money. Everyone knows the payments have to made every month so if you're borrowing at 8% and getting an 8% return you're simply going to break even. If you're as smart as a fifth grader you know that math calculations have to be performed in the correct order or you'll get the wrong answer. She also gives an example of someone who could pay cash for a house but takes out a mortgage anyway and invests the money. She conveniently ignores the fact that the person could simply pay cash for the house and then invest what they would have made in payments each month and that money would grow to almost the same amount as her "safety fund"

The third problem with this strategy is that the only way to get this 8% tax free, totally safe return is to buy a questionable insurance product that she or her friends will be happy to sell you. Then you'll have the IRS looking over your shoulder.

I'm not a big fan of a mortgage free house for a number of reasons but if you're going to harvest equity and invest it, you'd better know what you're doing. For the average person it's way too risky.

Start saving some money by NOT buying this book.

1 out of 5 stars This book has been done before, called Missed Fortune 101.......2007-09-22

Sad to see people trying to ride the coattails of another book and rip it off so blatantly. The orignal book called Missed Fortune 101 introduces the world to these strategies. Well Stop Sitting comes in and basically changes a word here and a word there to try and be different. For example Missed Fortune 101 talks about "going down the highway of life with one foot on the gas and one on the brake" Ms. Snow talks about going down the highway with 4 flat tires and a broken windshield...Come on!

Read Missed Fortune 101 Missed Fortune 101: A Starter Kit to Becoming a Millionaireto read the real story first, Read Stop Sitting for a rehash, if you like that kind of stuff...

I know I'm gonna write a book called Elbib and have it start out with a guy named Aaron and a girl named Emily who live in the jungle, then get kicked out of the jungle for eating the forbidden vegetable...

5 out of 5 stars Looking for answers.......2007-08-19

I, too, was in awe after reading this book. The ideas are presented in a simple, easy to understand way, and it seems to me to be very logical. I'm no financial genius, rather a former math teacher and the numbers seem to work on paper. But, really, after the awe has worn off and reality hits, what's the catch? This seems too easy. If this idea has been in existance for several years, then why hasn't it caught on with the "masses?" Why don't more financial advisors recommend this? Is there something I'm missing or does it really work that simply and just nobody knows about it? Somebody....give me the real scoop!

1 out of 5 stars Very, Very dangerous book.......2007-08-02

As I began to read this book, my first challenge was to get over the unearned arrogance of the author. Marion Snow may have a "scientific mind" and have a little experience in the mortgage industry selling people mortgages, but she is no financial planner.

The book is absolutely full of errors and misrepresentations of how some very complex financial products work. She literally demonizes financial planning professionals who have spent years of their lives helping clients and studying the ever changing landscape of both financial planning, estate planning, as well as the Internal Revenue Code.

Some of her VERY dangerous errors are as follows:

First, nearly all of her calculations discuss saving taxes at a 30 or 33% tax rate. While this sounds good, the average American is nowhere near the 33% tax bracket. The 33% tax bracket does not begin for most married Americans until they have over $195,000 of annual income.

Secondly, the insurance products that she describe do not function as she indicates. On page 110, she casually mentions that her insurance strategy will work as "long as you are careful not to deplete your cash value." She does not mention that the "tax advantaged policy loans" she advocates are 1)charged interest by the insurance company, and 2) taxable if the policy lapses in later years. Additionally, she neglects to mention that Universal life policies have increasing costs which will cause them to lapse using her strategy.

Third, all of her calculations are "assumed and hypothetical." They do not address real numbers. About halfway though the book she indicates she "got her insurance license" just to verify her findings. Unfortunately, an insurance license is viewed by most credentialed financial planners with the same reverence that training wheels are viewed by Olympic bicycle racers...

Fourth, her mortage strategies advocate taking illegal tax deductions - the tax deductions she describes are not allowable to the degree the advocates, in the tax brackets she uses as examples. The deductions "phase out" well before a taxpayer can use them to the degree she illustrates. Simply put - the numbers are INCORRECT.

Ms. Snow should spend a few years in school and learn what she is talking about - and a few more years working with real world financial clients -before being arrogant enough to throw stones at those who do.

She is flat wrong in many areas and will hurt a great many people who take her cutesy approach to financial planning seriously.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book on the Subject.......2007-10-13

I've read several books on this subject and this one was by far the best. Many of the other books in the field have some rather dubious tactics listed, but this book focuses on reasonable steps people can take to protect their asstes that are legal and likely to stand up in court. I found this book to be a well organized, well written professional text in a field filled with a lot of books hawking expensive and legally questionable scams and schemes.

5 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING TREATISE!!!!.......2007-09-11

BUY IT. READ IT. THEN READ IT AGAIN. AND AGAIN. EACH TIME YOU READ IT YOU WILL PICK UP YET ANOTHER USEFUL NUGGET OF INFORMATION. THE UNIQUE THING ABOUT THIS 'BIBLE' IS THAT IT IS USEFUL FOR THOSE WISHING TO PROTECT ASSETS FROM FUTURE CREDITORS, AND JUST AS USEFUL FOR THOSE ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE FENCE, TRYING TO SEIZE ASSETS AS WELL. A VERY POWERFUL, DETAILED AND GENEROUS BOOK. NOT YOUR TYPICAL A/P BOOK. THE 'RIGHT' WAY TO SAFELY PROTECT YOUR ASSETS.

5 out of 5 stars Asset protection.......2007-05-12

This well-written book does a great job of dispelling a lot of the mis-information that currently abounds in the market place.

4 out of 5 stars Well researched.......2007-03-01

Jay Adkisson is my voice of reason in the field. This is heavily researched brain food for asset protection. The rule of law is constantly massaged and altered as the courts challenge provisions, and I always feel safest turning to Jay for his interpretation. In particular the Albright 291 Rptr. 538 ruling in Colorado has alot of LLC attorneys spooked. I'm sure we'll be hearing from Jay soon on this one.

5 out of 5 stars Above the Norm.......2007-01-17

Asset protection is a good practical sense guide on the areas of trust, business entities and a dose of reality. If your at a point where the accumulated assets is worth protecting for yourself, spouse, kids and family then this is the book to read. Its not too technical but down to earth business sense. I find this book is geared to people that have some familarity with the business environment. If you know why you want to protect your assets then this book is the next step.

4 out of 5 stars very practical handbook to finance.......2007-10-24

I enjoyed this book as the authors not only gave some very excellent insight into the current 'middle class' lifestyle, but also gave some really thorough data on how to do a 'hands on' handling of your own finances. Working out the true income level for your job is quite a new concept compared to other finance self help materials. Also, the historical data on the 'work week' was quite helpful. I enjoyed the humor as well as the emphasis on getting your own financial 'house' in order so that you can do what is really valuable for you with your life.

5 out of 5 stars You Cannot Read This Book Soon Enough!.......2007-10-06

This book did a wonderful job of orienting me financially so that I could visualize where I was at financially and what I would have to do to have the kind of future that I wanted. In my case, I wanted to retire in my fifties to pursue my own interests. For me, working for others was just a way to make money to support my family, etc. Anyway, I read this when I was in my early forties, and I managed to retire in my late fifties. There were some fortuitous events that helped me along, but I give Joe Dominguez most of the credit (along with what retirement savings we had already accumulated).

This is not the best book for learning the essentials of how to invest and what not. The author's advice in this regard is probably too conservative. He advocates investing in treasury bonds only, and regards the stock market as too risky. Conventional wisdom is that investing in such bonds only is also inherently risky, and that you need to diversify among asset classes to control risk. However, it is unlikely that anyone I know is going to retire due to a "great year in the market". And of course, me and my friends that looked at the 20% a year (or greater) returns in the wild and wacky 90's and assumed that was the norm, either learned from guys like Joe, or we learned the painful lessons that so many before us have learned when the market melted down. The author's use of the long bond as a safe return is right on. Today, to enjoy a retirement income of $40k, you need about $800k invested, just not all in bonds.

You can readily find books that explain modern portfolio theory in easy to understand language. This book, with its simple planning and tracking exercises, has helped me to no end in understanding why I spend money, where I spend it, and how to get it under control. And the long term planning exercises, and the author's whole point of view on the subject, are priceless. I was so excited after reading this book, that I bought copies for my children (who were young adults). Their books went unread, but I am going to read it again. There has always been an extra copy around the house--one of the fortuitous events that has helped me along.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Reality Check.......2007-10-06

I first read this book about ten years ago when I was working hard and watching the money go out faster than it came in. It was a great reality check on my life. Older now, and rereading it today it is still inspires me. It makes a perfect gift for younger people who are confused about the lack of personal satisfaction in their lives.

The basic premise that this is your life and you choose how you want to live it is its defining characteristic. The rest of your life flows from that. Acknowledging what has meaning for oneself and then directing one's actions to those ends can get lost in the day to day need to "earn a living."

It covers well the nuts and bolts of making these choices and giving you tools to enable accomplishing them. It is a little simplistic and conservative financially but given that it was written before the growth of the online economy it can really get you started.

Taking charge of one's life, not going with the flow, climbing up the corporate ladder, working at a job that is meaningless is well addressed. The next step is choosing how to live a meaningful life and examining other choices.

A book that has been helpful to me in this area is Internet Riches: The Simple Money-making Secrets of Online Millionaires, by Scott Fox. This book is a detailed practical guide to building an online business, full of strategies and thought-provoking ideas. Like Your Money or Your Life, it talks of building a life that is meaningful and gives you up-to-date tools for financial independence through self-employment.

Your Money or Life stops you in your tracks with its challenging thesis and Internet Riches gives you a new roadmap for implementation. Both are useful books with a positive message.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing book, doesn't live up to its title.......2007-10-04

I was shocked to discover they recommend investing only in bonds. Also their claim that inflation does not exist is bogus.

I can't believe they would recommend you quit a full-time job which usually has benefits to find part-time work which usually does not provide benefits. Have you tried buying your own health insurance? I have and it is not cheap. Sure, you get more time to yourself, but at the same time your earnings go down your insurance expenses go up. If you hate your job anyway you might consider doing this, but I don't see how they could recommend this in a general sense as a path to financial independence. The numbers don't add up.

While I think their advice to live within your means, make a budget, know where your money is going, calculate your net worth is all good, I think they have gone off the deep end on some of their other recommendations which makes me highly suspect of the book as a whole.

4 out of 5 stars rethinking money.......2007-08-24

This book made me rethink how money works and how it can work for me. It is a reality test for how we really spend and it coaches you on how to get in control of your money instead of letting it control you. I reread this every once in a while to reset my financial vision.

1 out of 5 stars I Do Not Recommend This Book.......2007-10-23

I was disappointed with the content of this book. I am an absolute beginner when it comes to web-based business, and my intent was to learn all I could before launching my website. At times, the author wrote for a reader in terms so basic as to not be helpful on the topic (essentially, `marketing is important because it will increase your web presence and this is good and important because it can increase your sales and because more people will know about you' type of thing. Well, we know that--that`s why we bought the book!); then, at other times, the information was confounding, ostensibly written for a far more sophisticated reader (discussion on various website tags in HTML creation--huh?). The former (along with considerable repetition of these basic concepts) would likely bore those with any knowledge at all; the latter would likely exasperate the unseasoned website creator, raising more questions than the text offered answers to. Unfortunately, I fell in the middle of the spectrum of these two groups and often found myself bored and exasperated. The book itself could have been much, much shorter without removing any key information. Ironically, in his section on website automation, the author offers advice he fails to follow in his own work, among many others: be concise and to the point; don't make it longer than needed; answer all questions. These were my major quarrels with this book.

That being said, I cannot say I did not receive benefit from the reading. The author presents good ideas which might otherwise be overlooked, as well as providing websites to assist the e-business creator with various tasks and functions. Additionally, the author remains aware of the fact throughout that many small business owners do not have limitless budgets, and he is generous in his offering of websites where the reader can go to find free or low-cost assistance. If there are places the discussions fall short, at least the reader is now alerted that certain elements deserve attention, and can then seek alternative sources of information on point. As it appears the shipper was also the publisher, I want to say that I was extremely satisfied with the purchase process from this company. The book arrived very fast, was in perfect condition, and the company took the time and effort to check on my satisfaction without delay. I was very pleased, and, therefore, would have no problem ordering from this publisher again.

5 out of 5 stars excellent.......2007-09-01

This is a great 1st time starter for small business. Anyone who's planning on starting an online business should definitely read.

5 out of 5 stars It's exactly what I was expecting.......2007-08-25

This book is a really must-to read for brand new internet entrepreneurs like me. I'm quite happy about this purchase. I recommend.

4 out of 5 stars Great Resource for Beginners.......2007-04-03

Bruce takes us through all the necessary points to get a website on track to benefit from traffic that can be resourced for little to nothing.

If you have a site that is sitting dormant, this is your book.

I found many basic tips which people may not know how to search for. It's all written out here in this guide.

4 out of 5 stars A Useful Compendium. .......2007-03-16

The majority of the information contained in this book can easily be found by doing several web searches for various topics. That being said, I appreciate the ease of being able to browse through this book for the information instead of searching for information which may or may not be valid.
Within these pages you will find sections on everything from setting up an affiliate program to using banner ads and Google AdWords for your site. You will also find an extensive list of terms and abbreviations common to the e-commerce industry.
Although a bit of a dry read, I finished the entire book in the space of two days on vacation. In the process of reading, several creative marketing ideas popped into my head, so I definitely have the author to thank for that!
In the end, I am giving this book 4 stars for two reasons: 1) He repeats a lot of information, as if trying to stretch out his word count to meet his deadline. 2) Some of the chapters read like an advertise for companies that he either owns or is otherwise related to.
However, beyond those two points of contention, I highly recommend this book as a starting point for anyone who is just starting out in the e-commerce or just needs a little refresher course.

Book Description

“Bernstein has become a guru to a peculiarly ’90s group: well-educated, Internet-powered people intent on investing well—and with minimal ‘help’ from professional Wall Street.”--Robert Barker, BusinessWeek

William Bernstein is one of today’s most unlikely financial heroes. A practicing neurologist, he used his self-taught investment knowledge and research to build a popular investor’s website. Now, in the plain-spoken The Intelligent Asset Allocator, he shows independent investors how to build a diversified portfolio—without the help of a financial advisor. A breath of fresh air for investors tired of overly technical investment tomes, this book will help investors:
• Learn the risk/reward characteristics of various investment types
• Understand and apply portfolio theory for an improved risk/reward ratio
• Sharpen their focus, and take control of their investment programs William Bernstein (North Bend, OR) runs a website—www.efficientfrontier.com—known for its quarterly journal of asset allocation and portfolio theory, Efficient Frontier.

5 out of 5 stars A classic book on investing.......2007-07-07

Anyone who is serious about investing in marketable securities should read this book and keep it handy as a reference guide. The author is a brillant student of the market and passive investing techniques. All of the supporting data in the book has been developed by the author and his assistant. I would recommend this book for the investor.

Another book for the beginner and the experienced invesror as well How to Make Money in the Stock Market-Buy 2,500 Different Stocks-Pay no Commission

5 out of 5 stars Jewel for long term contrarian investing from a US perspective.......2007-04-19

This book is for investors with a time scale of decades. So think about saving for a comfortable retirement. It argues from a point of view of an US American investor (types of asset classes and their behavior in time, all in US dollars, US tax laws, US investing instruments) but the described principles are general and also well suited for residents of other countries.
Bernstein has the ability of a very clear and down to the earth way of thinking. Even more important his prose is as clear as his thoughts. He takes you by the hand and leads you through quite difficult terrain. But as long as you hold his hand everything is clear and makes a simple impression.
His advice is solid and can be employed easily in practical investing. He even has advice for somebody with only thirty minutes of time for investments a year (Put it into the four asset types: domestic small caps, domestic large caps, foreign stocks and bonds of up to five years of duration. Split your assets in equal proportion to those types. Try to aggressively save fees maybe with Vanguard funds. Adjust the portions of those four asset types once a year to their original proportions.) Clearly this is good advice. If you read this book you also learn a lot of why this is effective. But if you do not know more than this advice: Will you follow it through thick and thin? Just imagine one asset type gets out of favor and loses a lot of value for a few years in a row. Then you have to pour yearly a lot of fresh and good money in exactly that asset type (Bernstein is a moderate contrarian). It is hard to believe that anyone has that strength without a well developed own opinion on that matter. Yes it is exactly the opposite of a stop loss. It is buy more of the losing types and sell the winning ones. The hope is to buy low and sell high.
So enjoy the ease of reading and Bernstein's brilliant simplicity, but don't be fooled by it. You will have to work hard to gain your own standpoint. And you have to invest actual money for a few years to get to know yourself.
For further reading this book has an excellent bibliography and the author runs a great website. I highly do recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Fianance........2007-04-01

This is a great book. Don't make it your 1st finance book, but a great follow up to a "Random walk down Wall Street"

4 out of 5 stars Clearly explains the theory, its background, and use........2007-03-26

This is one of 3 books that I have on the subject .... and it complements those books each of which has its own particular bias.

The book is well worth buying, reading (with a few different color highlighters), and keeping it on the shelf for reference (.. in other words to keep one going back onto "track").

There is a bias towards using index funds; and this bias does use all the conventional wisdom -- wisdom that everyone else will be trying to employ. Therefore, there is a lack of ways to "jump-start" a portfolio -- ways that must be obtained from other books and newsletters.

5 out of 5 stars Efficient Frontier - Now I understand.......2007-01-31

This book can "turn on the lightbulb" for all types about what the Efficient Frontier really means! This is the best investment book I have read that attempts to focus the individual on risk - the most important facet of investing.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the best book on personal finance you can buy.......2006-05-20

I actually had this book in 1993 when it was self published the principles in it showed me how to go from being totally broke and $50,000 in debt to now having a net worth of $150,000, this is also after going through a divorce where I lost 50% of my net worth.

This is financial step one:Start the journey.I have also been listening to Dave Ramsey on the radio since he started in Nashville in 1993. His common sense information is why I have a 6 figure 401K, and have had financial peace over the past 13 years. He taught me what my parents should have about personal finance. This is a great beginners book in personal finance,it can show you the way out of debt and into prosperity. Here are some of the rules:
1). Never have a car payment
2). Do not use credit cards
3). Get a mortgage of less than 25% of your monthly net income.
4). Have 3 months of expenses saved
5). Get a career you love not a job
6). Tell yourself and yout family NO to things you can not afford
7). Contribute 15% to your 401K
8). Live on a budget
9). Live on less than you make!
10). Work two jobs until you are out of debt.

It is worth the price you pay short term for the long term peace.

5 out of 5 stars Financial Peace - A Plan that Truly WORKS!.......2006-05-05

This book has literally changed our lives. I give this as a wedding gift (w/some cash) for many young couples. But, young or old, the practical steps given in this book can change your life!

Ramsey is blunt, but caring. He provides hope when things look the worst. He's lived through bankruptcy and loss of everything, and he shares his story to show how changes in money management can impact you. Written in easy to understand language and terms. Should be required reading for all high school students! (but, it's not too late for the Baby-boomers.) Ramsey is a true teacher.

5 out of 5 stars Practical and Doable.......2005-07-06

Dave Ramsey makes it easy to apply the principles he outlines in this book. In the conclusion he evens admits he hasn't totally implemented all he writes about in his own life. He explains that if a reader can accomplish 25% of what he describes, significant financial progress will result. There is not any major revelations in this book. He reminds you of the basics.

He puts finances into context, emphasizing from the outset that other aspects of life have to be taken into consideration. One of the recurring themes is to give to worthy causes. He also talks about tithing. His discussion on money always being in circulation is worthwhile.

The reflective nature of this book takes the subject matter way beyond greed. Stewardship, not accumulation is the framework. These principles are worthy goals which should be achieved by anyone interested in being a responsible adult.

3 out of 5 stars SIMPLE BUT POWERFUL.......2004-06-03

This is a very simple and easy to read book about getting out of debt and becoming financially free. The steps are clear-cut and presice and I plan on using the techniques to become free of debt. But to me the most powerful thing about the book is how it changes your way of thinking about debt. I like everyone hates being in debt but for some reason we've come to think that it's neccesary. The whole nation is in debt and it's only getting worse. This book opens your eyes to the fact that debt destroys lives and causes a never ending cloud of depression over you.
I really don't think people realize this in their everyday lives. They buy and buy what they can't afford and wonder why they're not happy with their spouses, jobs, careers, lives. Bottom line ,,, Debt equals NO PEACE and this book proves it.

The only negative about this older version of the book is that it doesn't suggest what a person should do if they don't have the money to take the steps. The book is so powerful in influencing your mindset it seems strange that it leaves out the important fact that a person may have to get a part-time job or they may have to cut out a lot of luxuries in order to get debt free. This version also doesn't suggest how a couple should work out differences of opinions when it comes to credit.

Other than those two things this is a great read for everyone and a book I feel every freshman in college should get for free before they start receiving all of those pre-approved credit card statements..

4 out of 5 stars Knowledge without Action is Powerless!.......2003-05-03

Dave Ramsey presents some very good information and IF most people appled it they could indeed create Financial Peace. The truth is as Dave says on page 271, "..Reading this book and obtaining knowledge is good, BUT IT IS NOT ENOUGH." Over 7 trillion dollars in consumer debt has families struggling with not only money but with time. They need a system that takes less than an hour a month, which is about all of the time and energy they have to break free. Dave certainly has the heart of his reader in mind when he wrote the book.

Book Description

Anyone can write a book about how to get rich. The bookstores are full of them. They rarely work, though, which isn't surprising since the people who write them rarely know much about money.

But it takes Ben Stein, economist, finance expert for Barron's, commentator on finance for Fox News, and (fairly) successful investor to write a book called How to Ruin Your Financial Life. Written with the same tongue-in-cheek cheekiness as his bestselling How to Ruin Your Life, this book is a humorous road map showing you how to make something useful of the money that comes in and out of your life. Follow the rules—in reverse gear—and you're bound to be a lot better off than you are now. Follow the rules as they're written—and you're highly likely to wind up in bankruptcy court—as millions do every decade.

Here are some of the rules, just to whet your appetite: Collect as Many Credit Cards as You Can and Use Them Frequently; Compete with Your Friends to See Who Can Own the Most Expensive and High-Status Possessions; Know in Your Gut That Only Suckers Work Hard for Money and That Smarties Like You Only Have to Find an Angle; Remember That Retirement Is a L-ooo-nnn-g Way Off, and Don't Even Think about It Right Now; Bear in Mind That Only "Little People" Pay Their Bills or Taxes; Don't Bother to Own Your Own Home Because Home Ownership Is a Hassle...and many more.

This book is a laugh-out-loud way to educate yourself, your children, and your friends about how money really works...and a way to smile while you're straightening out that mess you call your financial life.

5 out of 5 stars What not to do with your money.......2007-05-12

I am in the financial planning business. I manage my money well. Often it is hard to recall some of the silly things folks do with their money and how they make financial choices. Thanks to Ben's book, it is obvious why a fool and his money are soon parted.

5 out of 5 stars Perhaps the best personal finance guide yet written........2007-03-13

Sure, there are plenty of books out there about how to get rich. They almost always fail because the authors are ignorant of how money works. Ben Stein is a true financial expert and only someone of his caliber can teach us how to blow it all. A hilariously written book and a tongue in-cheek way of assessing one's own financial foibles. I must admit that I am guilty of more than a few of these tips (I won't say which ones!) The essay titles say it all. Here are a few:

*Save money only when you feel like it, and if you just don't feel like saving, then don't.

*Forget to pay your taxes.

*Collect as many credit cards as you can and use them frequently.

*As soon as you've succeeded in maxing out your credit cards, get new ones!

*Don't think about retirement- it's a loooooooong way off.

*Start a business with inadequate capital- in a difficult field and in a difficult location- and expect it to prosper. (also titled, "Open A Restaurant.")

and my favorite...

Find a man or woman with really expensive tastes and reckless financial habits- and marry him or her!

5 out of 5 stars Read this and then read it WITH your kids (or give it to your teen)!.......2007-03-04

Ben Stein should be a keynote speaker on high schools (or even grade schools), because what he says could form the basis of an excellent class on financial literacy. After all, our kids are supposed to learn the basics of reading, writing and mathematics but...what about the basics of how to handle money? Isn't that equally important (and for those who say they learn it at home, the level of personal debt in this country is alarming, so I'd argue that point).
In any case, the humor and writing style of this book makes it very accessable and it should reach a readership that finds other financial books too dry or ho-hum. This one is not and if you simply do everything the opposite of what you'd do to "ruin" your financial life, you will be on a more solid financial path. Get this. Read it. Share it with a teenager or high school student or anyone being lured down the road to instant gratification, expensive cars and clothes and who is NOT looking at the larger picture - or their financial future.
Funny thing, too. With a little foresight and by starting early, it is possible to indulge (some) and have enough for the future. Read this book. You'll get the point.

4 out of 5 stars Simple yet informative financial advice.......2006-07-24

Ben Stein knows how to dispense basic financial advice. Don't put it in a stuffy investment tome and don't give it as a lecture. Instead use sarcasm and satire, presenting poor financial decisions in an absurd manner which will hopefully induce people who need the advice to follow it. Let's face it-nothing Ben says is complicated-it's all common sense-and nothing should really even need to be said. But this book is for people who don't have a lot of financial sense, who don't save money and have a tendency to get bamboozled by get rich quick schemes. Stein shows, in a simple and unmistakable way, the folly of 55 poor financial decisions that are, alas, common. An example: in one short chapter Ben advises making only the minimum payments on credit cards, and in another he advocates transferring balances so you'll never have to pay them off. In doing so he points out what a poor decision this really is, and hopefully inspires people to avoid this pitfall. This book works because it is both simple and informative, without being either condescending or boring.

5 out of 5 stars Perhaps the Best Ten Bucks You Have Ever Spent.......2006-04-30

Most people in the US could really use this book. So many people believe things about finances that are not true or they don't think about their finances at all.
Anyway, Dr. Ben Stein will straighten the reader out with this excellent book (I hope).
Dr. Stein uses a sarcastic approach to helping the reader see what he/she is doing wrong. I nearly split my side laughing about the late night infomercials. Stein hammers away at people for not saving money or charging up credit cards, etc.
At the end of the book Dr. Stein tells the reader to save a portion of their income and buy index funds, annuities (which I wouldn't do), CD's, and good mutual funds.
Ben Stein has a Ph.D in Economics, so I think we should take him seriously.
How To Ruin Your Financial Life is a great book for students and for those who have just plain been getting kicked around by life.
An excellent buy. Don't delay this purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Feng Shui - Simplified!.......2007-07-10

This book makes feng shui easy and fun! Karen Rauch Carter uses the Black Hat style which is a very simple, but effective, form of feng shui. With this book you don't need a compass, pendulum or certified feng shui expert, in order to enjoy the benefits of this timeless art. You'll be able to start making changes to your home, and your life, immediately with the easy to follow instructions that are provided.

Inside, you will find a chapter for each of the 9 sections of the Bagua. Immediate action items and a short summary are provided at the end of each chapter, which can be referred to over and over. Karen will keep you entertained though out the entire book with her quirky sense of humor! She also provides loads of examples and stories of how feng shui can improve your life. I am an antique dealer, by trade, and I own my own business. I can honestly say that after decluttering my laundry room (my prosperity area) and painting it a pretty shade of lavender, I immediately noticed and increase in sales at my shop!

Just A Tip: Make sure you read chapter 12 before you start making changes in your home, the affirmations in this chapter will make all of your actions much more effective!

4 out of 5 stars Well written and easy to understand.......2007-05-20

This is probably on the top five list of good feng shui books that I've ever read. Very informative and easy to understand and follow. It's really put together nicely.

While I do think there is definately something to harmonizing the energy around you, I don't think that moving your stuff is any guaranteed way to bring a certain thing to yourself. I have a love/hate relationship to books like this. I find some really good ideas, and some I think are silly and just don't work. I know that there are other issues involved. -Like what's in a person's birth chart for example. If someone is having a difficult planetary aspect in their money house, then, no amount of moving furniture/furnishings is going to change that aspect. Although, I do think it COULD help the person deal with it better. By moving something, it could represent a shift in how one has arranged or re-arranged their thinking about the problem. So, in that way, I think it could have a beneficial side.

I found many interesting things in this book, for example, in my helpful people/travel section of my home, that's where I already have the computer (World wide web) and I just happened to have a world map there. I found a lot of other helpful information too.

This is a fun and interesting book, and it's not gonna hurt anything to give something a try afterall. Just see what works for you.

5 out of 5 stars Full of facts, well written.......2007-04-12

Excellent explanations and suggestions without getting bogged down in thousands of years of history. Written in 21st century speak with humor and intelligence. The best Feng Shui book in my bookcase (I have a few) -topping Lilian Too's series. Even tells you the anecdote when the sink is in your romance corner!

5 out of 5 stars Rave Reviews for this book.......2007-04-03

I LOVED this book, and I am having so much fun with this, I have completely redecorated my home, using mostly stuff I already had, and all my friends are commenting "What have you done?" "It feels different in here" and "Everything seems to flow better". I hung a cutglass windchime in my missing "family" space to energize the space as recommended, and within minutes my youngest daughter called me. Amazing! And so much FUN! Now I am waiting for my romance energy to imporove!

1 out of 5 stars A lot of Nonsense.......2007-03-19

I purchase several feng shui books and this one was the easiest to understand. However, nothing happened after purchasing several hundred dollars of feng shui items. Instead it seems bad things were happening to me. I junked all the stuff. I think it's total nonsense and more like witchcraft...stay away from it.
