Book Description
The vision of a retirement spent playing golf or sipping martinis can be more of a dead end than a dream. For many people, retirement may span 30 years or longer and will not be viewed as an isolated economic event but rather a part of ongoing life planning.
In a comprehensive update of The New Retirementality, popular author Mitch Anthony revisits and expands on his groundbreaking concept of Retirementality—the ability to achieve the freedom to pursue life’s goals, at one’s own pace, on one’s own terms, and at any age. This book will help readers say goodbye to dreary financial opinions and hello to a whole new way of planning for retirement.
Drawing on the latest research on lifestyles and employment, Anthony debunks common myths about retirement, such as ""Age 65 is old,"" ""My retirement income will be spent on pills and doctor bills,"" and ""Retirement means not working."" Then, he gives readers a brand-new blueprint for retirement—from making a meaningful transition and maintaining a network of connections, to contributing through volunteerism and philanthropy, while ensuring there’s enough money to last a lifetime. Innovative ideas and planning techniques from top advisors in the financial world make this book stand out from others on the shelf. Anthony demonstrates that a life well lived after retirement should closely resemble life before retirement, filled with friends, family, work, travel, and hobbies. For the more than 77 million baby boomers on the cusp of retirement, The New Retirementality helps paint a detailed portrait of this ideal future and how to achieve it.

I highly reccomend this book to all of my financial planning clients. This book will challenge many of the traditional views/plans of most Americans and I believe will point you to an optimal plan for your life. It is a great read- very interesting. Mitch Anthony is a gifted author and his other books targeted to advisors are great as well.

Wow.......2007-10-18
Not only is this a great book, but I really admire this family. There is so much useful information in this book, if it doesn't apply to you, it will give you ideas. For instance, I have no storage space in my small apartment, so it is impossible for me to shop a month at a time. I adapted their advice to plan ahead only for two weeks, which I have enough storage space for. Thank you for writing such a great book.
Love the style of this book.......2007-10-18
America's Cheapest Family is a catchy title, & is written in an engaging conversational style. I especially enjoyed the paragraphs occasionally provided by the kids. A refreshing change from other books, to have their point of view included. The ideas presented are solid, & I like the 3 different "levels" at the end of each chapter. You don't feel like a failure if you can't quite reach to such an extreme level. The stories are endearing, especially about their long vacation. There will be something for everyone to learn in this book. An amazing family.
Practical ideas for frugal living.......2007-10-10
I loved this book! I read it cover to cover and have implememted great money saving techniques into my lifestyle. I feel I am already somewhat frugal, but this book gave me great ways to teach my children and to have an even more detailed budget. I ahve implemented some of the tips to save on groceries and am so pleased! I not only am saving money but also valuable time! I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for practical money saving tips already put to the test!
It's worth reading.......2007-10-02
I'm a pretty good cheapskate myself so some of these ideas were not new to me. However, even though some of their ideas were so draconian I would never personally do them, it was interesting to read and I got a few ideas from them. I checked the book out of the library instead of buying it, proving another way to be frugal.
The budget that set us free.......2007-09-10
I read this book when my family was spiraling into financial doom. We were spending $250-350 MORE than we were earning--per month. We were looking into selling our home and only car because we couldn't afford our lifestyle. And we were totally sinking in debt.
Then I read AMERICA'S CHEAPEST FAMILY and decided to try the budget outlined in the book. It took me many hours of work at first to figure out all our expenses & debts, but it was so exciting when it started to come together. My husband and I were elated because we finally knew what was wrong with our finances. Before we put everything on paper using their worksheet, we couldn't pinpoint exactly why & how we had lost control. Once we finished listing our costs, our overspending was clear and we knew we could change it.
We've been doing this budget for 5 months now. We're now spending less than we earn. We have money set aside ahead of time for all our bills, even the big ones like car insurance. And I no longer have to pay with the payment plans--I pay the entire bill at once. We've got a now-thriving savings account too. We even pay a little extra for our mortgage each month. And we've also got money set aside for Christmas & birthdays, so we can splurge and have no credit card debt.
The one thing we do differently from the Economides' is that I pay all of our bills automatically (and free) online. It's way easier than checkbooks and you save on stamps and grief.
Utilizing their budget system saved our family. We still own our home and car and I am so grateful. Our son can still play in our yard, which means everything to me. I could see how this budget could be too much for some people... however I actually enjoy the time I spend on it. Seriously, it's all good news now! It's also our plan for the future.
This budget set us free. I never thought I'd ever say that, because you always hear how budgets restrict you, but for us it's the opposite. Now we have financial freedom.

Book Description
The idea of participating in a triathlon may sound out of the realm of possibility for those without a typical jock-athlete’s honed build, intense focus, and competitive mindset. But now Slow Fat Triathlete opens the door to those who may not come quite so equipped. After years of obesity, poor health, and self-doubt, Jayne Williams took part in her first triathlon in 2002 to prove something to herself and became hooked on the rush of the race. Today she is a self-proclaimed “slow fat triathlete,” unafraid to overcome humiliation, laugh at her foibles, have fun, and accomplish impressive goals. Slow Fat Triathlete is a book for those who may be overweight, out of shape, undisciplined, or otherwise unprepared to enter a triathlon but are curious to try. Through personal stories, practical ideas and suggestions, and uproarious anecdotes, this book inspires, encourages, and proves that with a little training, almost everybody can have a great time and reap huge rewards from pursuing their tri dreams—and that everyone can become a participant and an athlete.
Customer Reviews:
Great, great, great first read for beginner tri-athlete .......2007-10-06
Great, great, great first read for beginner tri-athletes of all ages, shapes and sizes. I've already recommended this book to several of my friends. Jayne Williams is hilarious. She gives practical advice, but keeps you laughing from beginning to end. I plan to do my first triathlon in the Spring of '08, after reading this book, I now believe I can do it!
motivating and fun read!.......2007-07-06
I'm not quite new to the athletic world... still, I found Slow Fat Triathlete impossible to put down. In a very unusual twist for books like these, it is wildly entertaining with its conversational style and humorous slant.
When you finish this, you'll feel like you can take on the world-- and certainly, the triathlon.
Informative an a HOOT.......2007-06-01
This book is not for the seasoned trialthlete but offers an honest insight to those of us who love to compete but may never actually be competitive. A solid, honest beginning for someone looking to "Try a Tri".
Great Great Great.......2007-05-27
This book is amazing! Very motivating, helpful advice, let's you know that triathletes are not perfect Greek Gods. I love all of her little anicdotes and race day diaries. I have never felt so capable of accomplishing something in my life. This book is real and down to earth. Lots of help about finding equipment that will suit you. I have always been a nervous cyclist. I am scared to death of those skinny-tired death traps they call road bikes. This book let me know that bikes of all sorts are welcome in triathlons, especially if you're in it to finish, not just in it to win it. Maybe one day I will get over my fear of road bikes, until then Mountain-bike hybrid it is.
Buy this Book!! It rocks. Especially for normal everyday women.
Slow Fat Triathlete.......2007-05-24
What a wonderfully informative and entertaining book. An inspiration for every athlete that is not stick thin!
Book Description
For this book, author Diane Conway approached a police officer, a waitress, a politician, a lawyer, a cab driver, and many others, and asked them each the same question: "What would you do if you had no fear?" The results, chronicled in this book, were both surprising and enlightening. Her respondents told her their secrets, their long-hidden dreams, and their fears. Their dreams included quitting mind-numbing jobs, applying to medical school, buying tickets to South America, finding true love, quitting drinking, or having an affair. The distance between dreaming and doing, according to Conway, is surprisingly short. In What Would You Do If You Had No Fear? her fresh voice and "Studs Terkel in drag persona" challenge readers to stop, open their hearts, and truly live. Included are self-tests, quizzes, growth exercises, and inspiring quotes for realizing one's fear-free potential.
Customer Reviews:
Loved It.......2007-01-13
Just what I needed to refocus and prioritize after 20 years in the same job. This was an instant sabbatical for me. Gave me the energy boost I needed to move forward.
a better way to challenge yourself!.......2006-05-16
This book is fantastic in pushing us all to our very limits, posing the best of the best "what if" questions, and ecouraging us to act on them! So much fun to read, dream, and answer with action-- what would you do if you had no fear???
What would You do I you had no fear?.......2005-09-24
A light delightful read that offers hope to those who feel caught in a life of few choices. It's a basic follow-your-heart advice manual which also questions how much one depends on money for happiness.
Inspiration: yes; Substance: no.......2005-06-30
A magazine article prompted me to buy this book. Conway's humor's engaging, and the anecdotes are inspiring. But the book stops there.
Each section is headed with an aspect of the title's question:
*What would you do [if you had no fear]?
*Who would you be [if you had no fear]?
*Where would you go [if you had no fear]?
Your answers are likely to be:
...I would do/make/be/write/create ____, if I had ____.
...I would go to ____, except that I don't have _____.
...I would be a ____, if I'd ever gotten to ____ like I wanted to, all those years ago before ____.
And you are left hanging with your answers. Conway does inspire you to rekindle your desires, but she doesn't help you deal with the rationalizations standing in your way.
[For that, honestly, I'd suggest Laura Berman Fortgang's "Living Your Best Life."]
Conway often alludes to what occurs in her seminars. So the reader (or at least this reader) is left to wonder whether the seminars have the same content as the book, or whether they have more meat to them--and if so, why isn't that in this book?
Inspirational!.......2004-12-12
This book gives hope and inspiration to many who wish to change or break through a fear. I enjoyed every story and could in some way relate to them all. Ms. Conway has a refreshing and witty way of writing and look forward to her next book!! I recommend this as a gift to someone that needs a little boost.

The New Retirementality outlines a cleverly named concept that should be of interest to anyone uneasy with the traditional requirement that Americans totally drop one portion of their lives--the working part--simply because they've reached a certain age. Author Mitch Anthony offers, instead, an alternative for a more balanced period of later life that's based entirely on personal desires and that ultimately could change, rather than merely buck, societal norms. Demanding a "philosophical shift in life planning" as well as a "fiscal shift in resource management," it calls for carefully reviewing individual thoughts about retirement, defining activities that would make it personally meaningful (and which will likely include continued employment of some kind), and preparing for the transition well in advance by simplifying both external and internal matters. Anecdotes about those who already have done so and inspirational suggestions from Anthony should provide motivation for readers who agree that flexible, phased retirement is preferable to the jarring lifestyle change enforced upon our parents. "Retirement as we know it today," Anthony concludes, "is a relic from a time and a world that have long since passed." --Howard Rothman
Book Description
Retirement Just Got Turned on Its Head!
All you need to do is look around to see that times are changing. The vision of a retirement spent sipping martinis and playing golf can be more of a dead end than a dream. For many of us, retirement may span 30 years or longer and will not be viewed as an isolated economic event but rather a part of ongoing life planning. The "new retirementality" is the ability to achieve the freedom to pursue your own goals, at your own pace, on your own terms, regardless of your age. The New Retirementality will help you paint a detailed portrait of your own perfect future and show you how to achieve it.
Customer Reviews:
Enjoying Retirement.......2006-06-27
The New Retire-Mentality by Mitch Anthony was a good read and I did get some helpful hints from it as I think more and more about retirement. Mr. Anthony should interview more people who are retired and are enjoying it. Most people that I know whom have retired are enjoying themselves and have no plans of calling it quits just because they have retired. They are beginning a new chapter it is not the end of the book yet!
The New Retirement: Ultimate Guide To The Rest Of Your Life.......2004-06-30
The New Retirement: The Ultimate Guide To The Rest Of Your Life is the most comprehensive book on the subject that I have seen. I especially recommend this book to those who are about to retire since it provides an excellent self analysis on the type of retirement that would best suit you (and your spouse if you are married). The book covers but goes beyond the typical "where to retire" and the "financial aspects" of retirement and expertly covers subjects of "readiness" for retirement, and "options" on the type of retirement that would be right for you. I have developed many strategies for retirement after having read this book that I would have never even thought of!
It's Time to Wake-Up to Reality.......2004-06-13
Mitch Anthony does a wonderful job reminding us that the common expectation of retirement is a very impractical and downright unhealthy.
Our concept of retirement is only about three generations old. When Social Security retirement benefits came into being people died about the same time benefits started. We now live decades longer. Yet most people still feel that they are "entitled" to retire in their sixties.
Only about 1% of all Americans will be able to retire in their sixties and maintain their standard of living. Why are we stressing ourselves out in jobs we hate hoping to save enough money to buy our freedom, i.e. retire? Add to that stress the guilt we feel because we have not saved nearly a fraction of what it will take.
A recent study by AARP showed that most seniors plan to have some sort of gainful employment in their retirement years - out of choice, not financial necessity. It is human nature to be involved and productive throughout our lifetimes.
The New Retire-Mentality is a very important wake-up call to help us re-think the "traditional" notion of retirement.
Save your retirement --read this book!.......2002-11-24
The New Retirementality by Mitch Anthony is one of the most remarkable books I have ever read. Not since seeing the terrifying opening scenes of The Matrix, have I had the sense of a socially induced reality collapsing so completely. In deconstructing the commonly held assumption that a non-working retirement is the best way to spend the last years of our lives, Mitch Anthony provides readers with an escape route from the Orwellian world of institutional thought control.
Save your retirement, read this book!
Great for Gen-X'ers Too.......2001-09-04
I really enjoyed reading this book. It has given me a new perspective on my career. I am glad that this wasn't just another book on how to save millions of dollars. Anthony discusses the importance of finding your calling, so to speak. He wants readers to look at what they enjoy most and do that for most of their lives. Of course, there may be a time when we are unable to work or no longer want to work. Then, it is important to have some money set aside. Otherwise, you can retire from the typical working world at any age and begin the life you've always wanted to live.

Customer Reviews:
Lots of good info.......2005-03-22
I read this book and liked it. There is a lot of stuff about Florida that I wouldn't have thought to consider when making a decision to move there. There are many differences than other areas of the U.S. For example, most houses don't have a basement, so you better keep that in mind if you need the space. In addition to the practical move information, there is a number of chapters on recreation (Weekend trips, Key West, Parks, Beaches etc). This would probably also be useful to current residents.
Sondra Greer.......2005-01-31
The contents of Farnham's guide is essential for anyone seriously considering relocation. The invaluable information he provides gives the positives and negatives of living in Florida. Read this practical book about day-to-day life in Florida if you're thinking of moving to paradise. Many helpful pointers which has already made my life simpler. Jam-packed with simple, crisp declarative sentences that makes reading the book both interesting and easy.
Great Information.......2005-01-24
I read the book. I've been to Florida. This book has great information.

Thank you to the authors!!!!!!!!!!
The Most Practical Book.......2003-05-23
I purchased a number of worthwhile books to help prepare to move a small Yuppie household across The Pond. In terms of practical matters, Living, Studying and Working (etc.) is clearly the best of all the titles I read. Other books placed so much emphasis on cultural expectations that they completely glossed over the hundreds of complications involved in such a complex transaction. It is this book that convinced my girlfriend (who is French, by the way, and learned quite a bit from this book) and I to postpone our target move date due to the difficulty of securing a work permit/residency, getting a bank account, etc. But it is also this book that shifted my attitude from "what am I getting myself into" to "ok, given preparation, this will work".
A must read for someone interested in moving to France.......2003-01-12
This book won't tell you everything (that'd take the fun out of it) but it will tell you lots of little things that really add up. This is one of the books I bought before I moved to France and it definitely helped. There's lots of little details that will make your move and your life in France go smoother. What I liked about it was it covered a wide range of topics, including social differences, taxes, transportation, appartments, etc.
Helpful basic information.......2003-01-07
I bought this book for my college-age daughter who was spending a semester studying in France. It was her first solo trip and her first time living solo in Europe. She found the book extremely helpful in learning about the culture and bureaucracy of France. There's lots of information on visas, transportation, money, documents, traveling in France and around Europe, and studying abroad. There's also a good chapter on the people of France that helped her understand attitudes and behavior.
It gives very basic information and should be used as a supplemental guide to other books about living abroad.
La Vie en Noire.......2002-12-06
In preparation for a three-year tour in Paris with my wife and children, I purchased this book and five (!) others on the subject of living in France from Amazon.com. While all have their merits, none have adequate coverage of the French legal system and how to work with the police. It shouldn't have surprised me that, in a country whose history contains episodes such as the Reign of Terror after the French Revolution and collaboration with the Nazis during WWII, there is an official process, called "main courant" in which citizens can "denounce," or file official complaints, against their neighbors for things such as having a baby that cries. Suffice it to say, this process, apparently embedded in the culture for centuries, can result in tremendous prolonged misery and stress, even for a Francophile like me, with many, many wonderful French friends. It might have been easier to deal with summons to the police station, investigations by the mayor's office, visits from social workers - all in less than three months of living here - with some advance prep. Thank goodness I work for a supportive company. Be forewarned!

The title of Living, Studying and Working in Italy says it all: this book is intended for would-be expatriates with an eye for Italy. The authors have both had extensive experience living and working in the Bel Paese--Neighbor was in Florence for four years while Larner still lives in Rome, where she is a journalist for Business Week. Together they have pooled their experiences and collective knowledge of living abroad to address the practical side of living, working, or studying in Italy.
The first thing you might notice about this book is that it lacks references to Italy's great art, popular tourist sites, and best hotels. But remember, this is no ordinary guidebook--leave the tourist stuff to others and let Neighbor and Larner take you on a tour of everyday life as an expatriate in Italy. Here you'll find information about taking language courses and teaching English, volunteering for archeological digs, and starting a business. There are plenty of practical tips about visas, banking, residency requirements, and--alas!--taxes. There are lists of language schools, volunteer opportunities, and internship programs as well as information about freelance, part-time, and full-time employment opportunities. Only Brushes the Surface.......2007-06-02
I moved to Italy to live, study and work, taking with me this book as the ultimate resource for an American looking to make a life there. Unfortunately, I did not find it to be the exhaustive guide I had hoped.
Not only did it brush the surface on important questions any American moving abroad would have (such as those addressing legal requirements, getting proper paperwork and visas to stay, finding work, etc.), I found it to actually contradict itself in the discussion of some important subjects.
I am afraid that whole-heartedly trusting this book to help you navigate through some of the legal implications of moving to Italy may result in much frustration. I also found the helpful lists (compilations of schools and universities, English-speaking organizations, etc.) to be less-than-comprehensive. These lists mainly focus on the big cities and American-draws (Rome, Florence and Milan).
This book is fine as a starter guide to help you to begin to plan, but it is not "everything you need to know."
The Guru.......2007-04-19
This book arrived today, and I have read most of it already-- absolutely wonderful! It addresses answers to 98% of my questions, as well as issues I hadn't even thought about. There are also useful addresses and resources, as well as basic, but necessary tips, including how to convert measurements (for butter, sugar and clothing!), saints' days, and everyday etiquette (don't walk around your hosts' house barefoot!). How can someone who doesn't speak much Italian find a job? Which visa is actually right for you and what's the process? How do you prepare for your Italian job interview/write your resume? What's the garbage tax? What if you need emergency medical care? How do you get covered by Italy's public health care system? What is the proper way to go shopping in Italy? I've spent several months living/studying/traveling in Europe before, and I wish I had access to this book earlier. Full of tips, tricks, and tools to make you a successful individual in Italy (and beyond). Go eat some pasta and read up!
Italy made easy.......2006-01-30
To those who are either considering moving to Italy or just going for vacation, this is the book for you. It provides not only the basic information, but also answers questions that you would not normally consider or even think of. It also provides valuable information about embassies/consulates, education, and every day life. Even as a seasoned traveler, I found this book very useful, as I plan my relocation to Italy. It is an asset to any traveler's library.
Very thorough and helpful.......2004-12-17
This book is great because it gives you things from an American perspective. I've lived in Italy before on a study abroad program, so I was familiar with some things, but the lists of contact information alone are enough reason to buy this book. It covers everything from student visas to getting dual citizenship and from teaching ESL to starting your own business. A must read for anyone thinking about moving to Italy.
What great ideas! Maybe I won't be homeless after all..........2003-07-25
This book is literally a goldmine of useful information. I had no idea that the university system began at different times then the university system in the States... no wonder I didn't meet any cute Italian boys until two months into my stay! Hehe. But beyond that, I would recommend this book to anyone who, like myself, dreams of one day calling Italia home. I went through some of the avenues listed in the book (i.e., post-graduate study abroad, mingling with the locals, etc.) before even knowing this book existed, so the authors must be doing something right!

Joseph Teaches Us How to Hold On.......2005-08-02
This is an excellent book by Pastor Paul Sheppard, senior pastor of Abundant Life Christian Fellowship in Mountain View, CA. In 5 very short but powerful chapters, he encourages Christians to learn important lessons from the life of Joseph.
To give the potential buyer a general overview of the pearls of wisdom to be gleaned from the book, I will list each chapter and give a synopsis with selected quotes from the book.
Chapter 1: You have A Date With Destiny
Pastor Sheppard starts this wonderful little book by introducing Joseph, the favorite son of Isaac and Rachel. Joseph is introduced in Egypt, where his brothers are bowing down to him seeking grain because of a severe famine that came to the land. But why was there grain in Egypt while famine was all around?
God had granted young Joseph a dream in which it was interpreted to mean one day his mother, father, and brothers would "bow down" before him. Joseph was even rebuked for his dream by his father (Genesis 37:10), but God had a plan. Yet God didn't bring this dream to pass quickly. It took many years. But nothing would stop the sovereign God from bringing His plans for Joseph and his family to pass.
Pastor Sheppard makes some good points in this introduction. He keeps us grounded in the Biblical truth that all things are not caused by God, but God does allow evil to happen. Pastor Sheppard says, "Thus, the popular notion that everything happens for a divinely orchestrated reason is simply untrue. However, God's people can rejoice in the knowledge that He is indeed at work in us `to will and to act according to His good purpose' (Phil. 2:13)." (p. 12).
I found no serious theological problems in this book. However, I would like to mention that I feel pastor Sheppard was perhaps mistaken to argue that Joseph was "bratty" and "full of pride" as he does on page 13. Just because he reported back to his father, this does not prove he was "bratty" or a "tattletale," which is what the good pastor seems to assume. For example, in Genesis 37:14 it appears that Joseph's father was the one who appointed him a "watchman" over what his brothers did.
As someone who can relate almost exactly to the story of Joseph because of my own "Joseph experiences" in life, I find it hard to believe he was "full of pride" in any way. Nothing in the whole of Scripture gives us this indication. And I have learned that trials like those Joseph went through do tend to keep one humble.
Sure, he "seems" to have worn his special robe that his dad made for him constantly, but this does not mean it was a source of harmful pride for him. He could have also worn it out of appreciation and love for what his father did. So I think the good pastor may have stepped too far into speculation on these issues.
Next pastor Sheppard gives us what he calls the "ABC's of Discovering God's Will." They are listed as Ask, Burden, Conferral, Dreams, Exposure, Faith, and Gifts. I encourage readers of this review to investigate these points themselves by buying the book.
Chapter 2: Dealing With Detractors
Here pastor Sheppard shows us how Joseph's brothers, who hated him unjustly, became his "detractors." They plotted to kill Joseph and his dream. They threw him in a pit, sold him into slavery, and he ended up in Egypt a slave. Some would ask, "Where was God?" The answer the good pastor gives is simple: "God sometimes permits our detractors to make choices that seem to do us harm. But ultimately He is in control of what happens in the lives of His children, so He takes what the enemy means for harm and makes it work for our good and His glory!" (pp. 29,30). The message from this is clear. Don't worry about detractors because they are being used to send you to your divine destiny.
Chapter 3:Dealing with Difficult Realities
In the chapter on dealing with difficult realities, pastor Sheppard helps us understand that we must have the proper attitude about trying times. He reminds us that, "Many people think that the only way God can bless us when we're in a difficult situation is to deliver us FROM it...But Joseph's story demonstrates that sometimes God blesses us THROUGH our difficulties." (p. 32, capitalized emphasis mine, italics was in the original). Pastor Sheppard later reveals one of the main keys to dealing with difficult realities; and that is to have a relationship with the God who manifests His presence to those who know and love Him by "...actively comforting, teaching, and guiding" us through "painful seasons" as He did with Joseph (p. 35).
One of the most important points pastor Sheppard made that many people destined or called to leadership in the Church need to hear is this: "But just as Joseph was groomed for greatness by becoming an excellent slave, so God prepares us for our future in obscure circumstances...God makes his best leaders out of those who were once the best followers." (p. 39, I noticed a typo because "his" should be "His").
The only thing that could have been improved in this chapter is when he mentioned "recent statistics" showing that when the income level of many people rises, their percentage of giving to churches and ministries actually decreases (p. 39). It would have been nice for him to have given us the source for these statistics.
Chapter 4: Dealing With Disillusionment
Here pastor Sheppard reveals Joseph's experience of being falsely accused of raping his master's wife and is sent to prison for it. It appears that Joseph was in prison for a long time behind a false accusation. Many people can relate to this on a personal level. But God was still with Joseph, and he apparently was still with God. They didn't give up on each other, so to speak.
Pastor Sheppard relates the lesson to be learned from this: "Some Christians find it very difficult to accept that God would permit His obedient, disciplined children to experience significant delays in seeing their God-given dreams come to pass" (p. 46). How should you deal with these times of disillusionment? Maintain a prayerful and loving divine companionship with God no matter what (p. 49).
Chapter 5: It's A Setup
We enter the final chapter. Pastor Sheppard reminds us to be careful not to falsely judge if someone is in God's will or not by looking at his or her circumstances. Those going through the most trials perhaps are very pleasing to God and are on their way to the most blessings, and those who seem to have the most blessings in this life may be living lives of sin and being very displeasing to God (p. 51).
Moreover, he warns us that on the way to divine destiny we will encounter disappointers, those who may mean well but will let us down. He says, "As people of destiny, we must be careful not to become bitter towards those who disappoint us" (p. 56). We must learn to forgive, even as God forgives us.
On the way to his destiny, and while in jail for a crime he didn't commit, Joseph was being prepared for God's providential hand. God gave king Pharaoh a dream that, conveniently enough, only Joseph could interpret. After interpreting the dream, it is revealed that God was warning of a coming 7 year time of plenty, followed by another 7 years of famine. When Joseph suggests that Pharaoh hires a wise person to handle the storing of grain during the time of plenty, guess who the Pharaoh appoints for the job? I'll give you three guesses, and the first 2.5 don't count. :-)
The moral of the story? Hold on to your dreams, even when you're living a nightmare, for God will wake you up from that nightmare and bring His will to pass in your life.
I highly recommend this book for every Christian who is going through trials and hard times. I've been there myself. I've been homeless, suffered abandonment from family and friends, and been falsely accused and paid a price for something I didn't do. I can relate to brother Joseph. I thank God for speaking across time and cultures by using stories like this to encourage and strengthen us.
My only problem with this book is that it was definitely too short because it's so good you yearn for more. Otherwise, pastor Sheppard has done us a great service by writing it.
