5 out of 5 stars I never knew about any of this!.......2007-10-21

I love it when a book comes along that points out web site functions I never realized existed. This book packs a lot of information into a compact read, which makes it easy to get through but steers you in exactly the right marketing direction. The way he assigns ratings to the various marketing techniques helps one decide what to tackle first.

4 out of 5 stars A solid looks at the basics.......2007-10-14

As the author of the recently self-published Hokie Games: Virginia Tech Football Game by Game 1945-2006 I devoured the contents of this book to try to jump-start my Amazon sales. I can't speak to the results just yet as the portion of the suggestions that I have implemented has only been in place for a week or so.

In fact, part of the appeal of the book is that it's not supposed to show results yet. It's not a quick "make you book an instant Amazon bestseller" plan. The book has tips and techniques that grow your presence over the long haul. That's exactly what I was looking for and this book delivers.

The steps were easy to follow and the "why's" were well laid out. Obviously, the author did his homework on the subject of Amazon.

--Rich Tandler, author of Hokie Games: Virginia Tech Football Game by Game 1945-2006

5 out of 5 stars Great asset for POD authors.......2007-09-23

When I purchased this book, I was really quite skeptical. I figured that it was just a promotion of Amazon.com and not really any useful advice.

Then my wife and I published our first children's book, Santa and Sam's Big Secret through Outskirts Press. Although OP did a wonderful job of publishing the book, the major portion of publicity for the book was left up to us. We have been following some of the advice offered by Brent Sampson and we do believe that it is helping with the promotion of our book.

Sell Your Book on Amazon is an easy read. You can easily skip over chapters that you do not feel interest you, and still come up with many ideas that will help you to promote your book.

I would recommend this book to any authors who are using a Publish On Demand publisher. It will surely enhance the sales of your book.

I wrote a book called, "Letters to My Friends: A No Guarantees Guide to Awakening." It took three years to write. I spent another year sending it to publishers before I finally found a small publisher willing to work with me.

The Great Day came. I held my baby in my hands. I knew the world would proclaim her beauty. I was wrong, very wrong. A few friends and friends of friends bought the book. I was stunned and hurt too. But I kept trying to market my book the old fashioned way. I contacted the major book chains. To them I did not exist. I sent over 100 books to bookstores, and I never got a single order. I sent about 100 books to major newspapers, and I never got a single review.

One local bookstore, New Renaissance Bookshop in Portland, Oregon was very helpful. But the support of one local bookstore was not enough. I was almost ready to give up, but instead I went to Amazon and joined the Amazon Advantage program. I sold perhaps 20 books. Victory at last! Amazon loved me and I loved Amazon! And then I did not sell another book on Amazon for about a month.

I was ready to give up. But I knew my book could help readers feel better about themselves. I had received dozens of touching letters that left me feeling happy that something I had done made a difference in the world. Besides, I needed the money. Family illnesses had depleted my bank account and my debt was mounting. So, instead of quitting, I did an Amazon search for books on marketing books, and I found, "How to Sell Your Book on Amazon," by Brent Sampson.

I wish I had found this book a year ago. If you have a book you are trying to sell, or if you want to write a book, buy this book. Unless you are that rare writer who pens a bestseller, you will find yourself alone in a big jungle. Amazon gives you a path out of the jungle, and Brent Sampson's book is the guide.

Honestly, I have just started implementing his suggestions. So I have lots of work to do. After I finish this review, I will ask him to be my Amazon friend. I might ask him to review "Letters to My Friends: A No Guarantees Guide to Awakening." He said to mention my book as often as possible without being obnoxious. And finally, he said Amazon friends are important. You see, if you become my friend, whenever anyone goes to your Amazon profile and clicks on my picture in your Friends section, there's a chance I will sell a book. And if someone clicks on your picture in my Friends section, you might sell a book. So, do you want to be my friend? Good heavens, I feel like a little kid again.

I will make a deal with you. In a year, I will write another review of "Sell Your Book on Amazon" and let you know how I am doing. Thank you, John C. Conley, author of "Letters to My Friends: A No Guarantees Guide to Awakening."

I've been selling cars online for 4 years now. This book was very basic. If you are new to selling cars online buy this book. If you have done it for a while not worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars More Usefull Than I Thought.......2006-05-18

I just quit working for a direct competitor of this guy's business. I am embarrassed to say that many of the poor reviews on this book came from inside the walls of my previous company for competitive reasons. At the time I thought it was funny, harmless and fair game. What was interesting that made me read it the first time was the fact that there were an unusual amount of copies floating around. I thought it was good but felt like I was missing the message. Then I saw another copy sticking out of a box one day. I grabbed it, opened it up and was I amazed. The book was completely marked up and there were pieces of paper inserted with business names written on them. It suddenly came clear to me that our entire business was completely crafted after this guy's book. I've read it again and now I get it. Since then I've left my job for a factory position.

Book Description

Intelligent Selling: The Art & Science of Selling Online is your resource for proven e-commerce strategies and techniques that improve the customer relationship and build sales. Anyone involved with selling online -- whatever the product or service -- will benefit from this insider's view of selling online.

This book is for any manager or executive looking for the right way to sell to customers online. Author Ken Burke -- Founder, President, and CEO of leading e-commerce developer Multimedia Live -- presents the Intelligent Selling(tm) strategies and techniques his company uses to help catalogers, retailers, direct marketers, and manufacturers improve customer relations and increase sales by:

* Increasing conversion rates
* Increasing average order size and frequency of purchase
* Improving customer loyalty and retention
* Reducing abandoned cart rates
* Decreasing customer service costs
* And improving the overall customer experience.

Burke provides innumerable hints and tips based on lessons he and his company learned in the real world of online marketing. He covers everything from effective merchandising, to improving the way your customers respond to you, to refining the way your website interacts with your other business channels. This is not just theory; what you read here has been proven to work on hundreds of successful e-commerce websites.

Intelligent Selling: The Art & Science of Selling Online describes the philosophical foundations of Multimedia Live's Web development techniques and strategies. Intelligent Selling does not require a specific technology, consultant, or Web developer. Rather, it is a way of looking at the entire Web presence, learning how to embrace your customer's interests and needs, and choosing the techniques that will allow you to reach out to them most effectively. Thus, this book is an exposition of the thought processes that guide Multimedia Live as it creates a client's Web presence and ties it in with their overall business goals. The philosophy of Intelligent Selling has driven everything Multimedia Live has done over the last several years, and has brought great success to its clients.

Because every website will undergo constant evolution, this book was conscientiously created as a resource full of hints and tips that you can use to build upon, improve, and expand your Web presence once it has launched. If you are just starting your first e-commerce endeavor, it lays the groundwork for getting it right the first time through tried-and-true methodologies worked out by one of the most effective e-commerce developers to be found.

Ken starts the book with the core premise of Intelligent Selling: that the purpose of your e-commerce website should be to build a good relationship with your customers so they choose to buy from you. The development of the all-important customer relationship is emphasized throughout. It is the driving force behind your personalization efforts, your merchandising strategies, the way your website interacts with your other business channels, and the way you execute your e-mail initiatives. Every chapter methodically illustrates how these and other vital aspects of Intelligent Selling can be implemented.

Everybody wins when e-commerce works like it should; the customer's needs are fulfilled, they have a good shopping experience, and you make more sales. The ideas you will find here will help you optimize all selling opportunities, create a stellar customer experience, and rapidly analyze and deploy change in a constant cycle of customer attraction, conversion, and retention. Intelligent Selling: The Art & Science of Selling Online is your guidebook to building a good relationship with your customers so they choose to buy from you in an environment where the competition is only a click away.

In 1993, Anthony and Paul Tedesco published one of the first 'zines on the Web--the Trincoll Journal (HotWired was the other). Now, a mere seven years later, the Tedesco brothers have produced the "first-ever database of pay-and-policy information for more than 200 paying online markets." Whew--we've come a long way, fast. The Tedescos' Online Markets for Writers is an indispensable resource for anyone wanting to write for the Web, not to mention anyone wondering how to recycle all those yellowing clips. While some of the book's listings are more thorough than others, all include basic contact information, and most describe a given publication's editorial needs. The best listings offer pointers from editors, as well as inside scoop from contributors (it would be nice if there were more of the latter). Duly armed, you'll know what you're up against when you submit to Epicurious ("We have never accepted an unsolicited submission"), Family.com ("It will be a rare exception if we respond at all"), or Business Week Online ("Not worth all the aggravation," says one writer).

Accompanying the listings are hints on writing for the Internet (make it short and personal, and provide links); profiles of Internet writers and editors; a sample Internet writing contract; the contract the National Writers Union would like to see used; and the Tedescos' 10 favorite places to be published online. At book's end, online writers and editors divulge their favorite Web sites--as if we needed more excuses to procrastinate.

The problem with all this burgeoning technology, I hear you thinking, is that so much of it is fleeting. By the time a book like this is released, half the data is obsolete. Perhaps. But the Tedescos are one step ahead of you. They plan to update the book via a free e-mail newsletter. --Jane Steinberg

3 out of 5 stars Good advice, but hopelssly outdated.......2003-03-03

The Tedesco brothers have written a book with good advice, useful infomation, and many links to sites using freelance writers. Some of the information is still valid, and for that it is worth reading. However, the book is hopelessly outdated, as the Interent is constantly changing.

5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal Book For Writers.......2002-05-27

-This book covers all the basics you need for writing online; the how to's of query letters, electronic rights, pay rates, contracts, and more. It's informative, well presented, and enjoyable to read. In addition, the authors even have a sense of humor. I've ordered other books on the subject and "Online Markets for Writers" is clearly the best.

-MUCHO THANKS TO THE AUTHORS FOR MAKING THIS INFO AVAILABLE TO EVERYONE!

Best Regards--Dan Murphy

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource.......2002-04-08

This resource for writers is excellent. Funny and well-written, the authors really did their homework. Best of all, updates are available for readers. I heard from the author personally via e-mail. Very nice.

5 out of 5 stars Online Markets For Writers review.......2002-02-26

If you're even remotely serious about writing online, you need this book. The spotlight stories were very informative and the markets section is filled with leads. I lost count of how many markets I found that I'm querying.

5 out of 5 stars Good Information - Simply Presented.......2002-02-26

As a mom of two boys under the age of 4, and a freelance writer , I didn't (and still don't) have a lot of time to devote to researching online markets for possible queries. This book has done all the work for me in a fun and relaxed read. The Tedesco brothers begin the book with all the web-related jargon and skills you need, including a great primer on sending HTML files, followed by a thorough complilation of "paying" online markets. This is one book that serious freelancers must have if you want to break into the online marketplace.

5 out of 5 stars Will Help Alleviate Most Fears About Online Auctions!.......1999-09-13

The Internet has opened up many wonderful opportunities for people to buy and sell merchandise and services online. It has become possible to make major purchases of common everyday items as well as buying those hard-to-find and hard-to-get ones! Within this last year the Internet has become the home of another traditional form of buying - auctioning. It is now possible for you to bid on those things that you and others are looking for in life from the convenience of your home or office.

Michael Miller has written a great online book, The Complete Idiot's Guide to Online Auctions, to help acquaint members of the online community with the pros and cons of the online auctioning business. While at first one may ponder experiencing the thrill of biding for something online, Miller points out that there are many precautions people should take before getting involved with this form of online buying. There are many people operating online behind the scenes to capitalize on the misfortunes of others through willful deceit. Online auctioning is not child's play! It requires a disciplined approach and Miller offers his readers plenty of thoughtful instruction.

Miller offers a wealth of information, including listings of the most popular auction Websites online to date that cover a variety of purchase items, including the much heralded eBay site. In fact, Miller treats his readers to a considerable amount of attention to this one site that currently ranks at the top of them all. Readers will learn how these auction Websites work and how they can best benefit from them. He also helps readers new to online auctioning by clearing up some of the common misconceptions they may have about online auctioning and points out many of the pitfalls they must avoid. Be wise with your public image and money - heed his advice!

Readers should carefully consider Miller's advice on bid and placement timing, auctioning techniques, specific procedures to follow, how to avoid being duped or taken advantage of by online scam artists, sales tax information, using credit cards to make online purchases, user warrantees, return policies, and other important purchasing considerations. This book makes an excellent companion to Preston Gralla's The Complete Idiot's Guide to Online Shopping. Both are great books to have on hand!

Miller offers an easily readable treatment on joining the online auctioning scene. This method of making purchases can be fun and profitable for those who adequately prepare ahead of time. He will help those readers wary of this fairly recent Web development by exposing many of the risks involved. Readers will gain great insight on how to save time and money. They will also feel at ease after reading this book. It will help alleviate most of the fears they may have.

The coaching offered in this book is top-notch. It's great for those wishing to participate in the buying and selling of items online through this highly visible form of marketing. Highly recommended for those persons conducting a business such as selling antiques and other collectibles!

4 out of 5 stars great resource, but an update is needed.......2007-05-19

Despite the dotcom crisis, the Internet has become one of the most important assets for screenwriters everywhere. However, it's not easy to find your way through the maze of websites, lists and newsgroups, and many very interesting sites might be hard to find or practically unknown. Christopher Wehner, creator of Screenwriters' Utopia, has written a guidebook to lead internauts to the good stuff out there. And the sites list is very impressive, and will keep many a screenwriter surfing happily along. Wehner does not just list screenwriting sites, but also gives some extremely interesting research links which will greatly benefit any writer.
However, Screenwriting On The Internet is not a glorified favourite links-collection. Wehner also provides very hands-on information on using the internet as a new way to break down the padlocked doors of Hollywood. To this purpose, he has added chapters on how to query by email, lists of agencies looking for new writers, and a large amount of production companies who take email pitches and queries. Most impressively, Wehner actually comments on each of these sites, in many cases adding query tips from the executives in charge. To many writers, this information will be pure gold.
But there is more : a listing of the recent script sites where writers can submit their log lines, synopses or scripts to interested producers, and a detailed presentation of a number of script consultants - including Syd Field. A chapter on marketing your screenplay online and some interviews with professionals round off this tome.
It should be clear that Christopher Wehner has produced a review-proof book. Sure, there are a few typos, and there are a few surprising omissions (Larry Brody's essential [...], Bill Martell's classic site and Nick Smith's more UK-oriented Scriptwriting Success are not mentioned). And for the inevitable next edition, I would like to see more international screenwriting sites mentioned, as well as a listing of internet screenwriting workshops. But the enormous amount of hard-to-find information and the practical tips on some very new aspects of the screenwriter's life make this an essential resource. Unfortunately, it hasn't really been updated since it was first published, and Wehner's site [...]which promised to provide updates is not accessible today (May 18 2007). This is definitely a book which deserves a second edition.

3 out of 5 stars NEEDS TO BE UPDATED!.......2006-05-13

You may notice that the great ratings for this book are almost all pre 2002.
It's now 2006.
The idea is great, but the info is outdated and needs to be revised.
Many of the links are dead and gone, or changed.
The Authors website also needs an updates links page,
which is mentioned in the book, but not to be found on the website which he refers.

3 out of 5 stars Solid Book.......2002-08-29

Not bad, not great. About half of it I could do without, but the other half is rather good. The producer and agent listings are good, and the chapter about e-mail querries is excellent. There's also some good instruction on how to use the Internet to market your script. All solid stuff. So is it worth your money? Yeah, I think it is. This is a book for someone wanting to sell a script.

4 out of 5 stars Solid Resource.......2002-08-27

A solid resource that provides instruction on email queries, pitching, contacting agents and producers. It's not just an "Internet" book. It's much more than that. It really is. And it's well written by someone who knows what they're talking about.

4 out of 5 stars Very Comprehensive Guide.......2002-04-01

I currently have this volume sitting on my desk. I have been waiting for a book like this one for some time and this book gives you that reassuring pat on the back: "It's okay to query by email. It's 21st century for God's sake!". I was worried upon purchasing the book that it would spend too much time on the subject of researching your work on the internet, but only one small chapter is dedictated to how to use Google and the like. The rest of the book is fantastic with reviews on those "pay to post your script sites" and what producers think of those sites and a very detailed listing of prod. companies that accept email queries, what type of material they like and quotes from a number of the producers on what catches their attention when you query. The book also contains a number of success stories of those who have used the internet to sell their work and tips and tricks for getting your work read. I would definitely say this is a book you should add to your screenwriting library.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars It's a very easy, specific introduction.......2007-10-05

If you're a practicing artist with little computer knowledge, then no easier introduction is available than Internet 101 for Artists, 2nd Edition, which covers everything from setting up email to making money on ebay, acquiring a URL, using meta tags to promote traffic and art, and more. It's a very easy, specific introduction which goes beyond the usual general computer guide for newcomers to reach directly into the artists' community.

5 out of 5 stars Good for Internet Beginners.......2007-09-25

This book was easy to read and definitely for beginners. The explanations for e-mail, surfing the web, etc, were simple and thorough. The chapters on designing your web site and selling art on Ebay were extremely good.

I'm not an internet newbie by any means but I've read (and liked) most books by ArtNetwork Press so I wanted to give this one a try. While most of the information was way too basic, I did pick up some good tips here and there. I also found that most of the information provided was very up to date with current trends. There were also a lot of helpful links to examples, information sites, etc.

This is definitely a must read for any artist that is not comfortable with their internet skills but want to tap into that marketing venue.

4 out of 5 stars Great Information - Rough Editing.......2007-08-11

I would have given this book 5 stars had it not been for numerous editing blunders. The information is outstanding.

Donald Sparkman helped clarify several legal situations with which the design industry can be faced. Of particular interest was the Chapter on Trade Customs. Although, I'd never rely on them solely, it's good to know they're there.

Although this book focuses on selling design, it does a great job discussing the business aspect of the industry... the legal stuff that I may have never considered. You won't find this kind of information in Design oriented books (It's not a design reference, by any stretch of the imagination).

If you can see past the editing issues, you'll have yourself a valuable business reference if you get this book. I also recommend Jim Smith's "How to Start a Home-Based Web Design Business", if you're looking for ways to keep your design firm in the black.
