5 out of 5 stars I never knew about any of this!.......2007-10-21

I love it when a book comes along that points out web site functions I never realized existed. This book packs a lot of information into a compact read, which makes it easy to get through but steers you in exactly the right marketing direction. The way he assigns ratings to the various marketing techniques helps one decide what to tackle first.

4 out of 5 stars A solid looks at the basics.......2007-10-14

As the author of the recently self-published Hokie Games: Virginia Tech Football Game by Game 1945-2006 I devoured the contents of this book to try to jump-start my Amazon sales. I can't speak to the results just yet as the portion of the suggestions that I have implemented has only been in place for a week or so.

In fact, part of the appeal of the book is that it's not supposed to show results yet. It's not a quick "make you book an instant Amazon bestseller" plan. The book has tips and techniques that grow your presence over the long haul. That's exactly what I was looking for and this book delivers.

The steps were easy to follow and the "why's" were well laid out. Obviously, the author did his homework on the subject of Amazon.

--Rich Tandler, author of Hokie Games: Virginia Tech Football Game by Game 1945-2006

5 out of 5 stars Great asset for POD authors.......2007-09-23

When I purchased this book, I was really quite skeptical. I figured that it was just a promotion of Amazon.com and not really any useful advice.

Then my wife and I published our first children's book, Santa and Sam's Big Secret through Outskirts Press. Although OP did a wonderful job of publishing the book, the major portion of publicity for the book was left up to us. We have been following some of the advice offered by Brent Sampson and we do believe that it is helping with the promotion of our book.

Sell Your Book on Amazon is an easy read. You can easily skip over chapters that you do not feel interest you, and still come up with many ideas that will help you to promote your book.

I would recommend this book to any authors who are using a Publish On Demand publisher. It will surely enhance the sales of your book.

5 out of 5 stars Buy this book if you want to sell books too!.......2007-09-12

I wrote a book called, "Letters to My Friends: A No Guarantees Guide to Awakening." It took three years to write. I spent another year sending it to publishers before I finally found a small publisher willing to work with me.

The Great Day came. I held my baby in my hands. I knew the world would proclaim her beauty. I was wrong, very wrong. A few friends and friends of friends bought the book. I was stunned and hurt too. But I kept trying to market my book the old fashioned way. I contacted the major book chains. To them I did not exist. I sent over 100 books to bookstores, and I never got a single order. I sent about 100 books to major newspapers, and I never got a single review.

One local bookstore, New Renaissance Bookshop in Portland, Oregon was very helpful. But the support of one local bookstore was not enough. I was almost ready to give up, but instead I went to Amazon and joined the Amazon Advantage program. I sold perhaps 20 books. Victory at last! Amazon loved me and I loved Amazon! And then I did not sell another book on Amazon for about a month.

I was ready to give up. But I knew my book could help readers feel better about themselves. I had received dozens of touching letters that left me feeling happy that something I had done made a difference in the world. Besides, I needed the money. Family illnesses had depleted my bank account and my debt was mounting. So, instead of quitting, I did an Amazon search for books on marketing books, and I found, "How to Sell Your Book on Amazon," by Brent Sampson.

I wish I had found this book a year ago. If you have a book you are trying to sell, or if you want to write a book, buy this book. Unless you are that rare writer who pens a bestseller, you will find yourself alone in a big jungle. Amazon gives you a path out of the jungle, and Brent Sampson's book is the guide.

Honestly, I have just started implementing his suggestions. So I have lots of work to do. After I finish this review, I will ask him to be my Amazon friend. I might ask him to review "Letters to My Friends: A No Guarantees Guide to Awakening." He said to mention my book as often as possible without being obnoxious. And finally, he said Amazon friends are important. You see, if you become my friend, whenever anyone goes to your Amazon profile and clicks on my picture in your Friends section, there's a chance I will sell a book. And if someone clicks on your picture in my Friends section, you might sell a book. So, do you want to be my friend? Good heavens, I feel like a little kid again.

I will make a deal with you. In a year, I will write another review of "Sell Your Book on Amazon" and let you know how I am doing. Thank you, John C. Conley, author of "Letters to My Friends: A No Guarantees Guide to Awakening."

Book Description

You don't have to have the biggest name or the most dazzling graphics to lure customers to your Web site. These days, all you really need is prominent search-engine placement. This book shows you how to get it! With searching one of the most popular Internet activities, a top spot on a major search engine virtually ensures a high volume of visitors--though converting them to buyers is another story. In these pages, top Internet marketer and strategist Catherine Seda tackles both parts of that equation. First, she outlines the strategy involved in buying the specific keyword positions that will lead users directly to the page you want. Then, she describes how you can turn poor-performing ad copy into targeted sales-getters, and how you can evaluate and correct low visitor-to-buyer conversions. Beginning marketers will find the info they need to implement a Web strategy quickly, while advanced marketers will find all kinds of tips for analyzing and improving current results.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Direct and Authoritative.......2006-09-04

The SEO proces can seem daunting and Ms Seda recognizes that fact. She gives a methodical, if not also logical trail to follow and has obviously done laborious research; which pays off. It may appear technical and dry, but the details are necessary to convey the ins and outs of SEO. Bravo and it will remain a part of my business reference library.

3 out of 5 stars It's a Good Read for the Money.......2006-07-06

It's not a bad overview of Search Engine Marketing, but I wouldn't recommend stopping with this read.

Some of the things Catherine covers are good and don't change. As an example, the chapters that provide Copyrighting Tips and that talk about how to improve conversions on Landing Pages. Even though they are only providing a glimpse as to what you need to know, many of those things do not change from year to year.

Other things however are going to require the reader further study. What one needs to focus on today to get good rankings is quite different from the day this book was written.

An example is paid inclusion; someone reading this should know that you don't need to pay to get indexed now. Sitemaps, getting backlinks from ranked sites that get regularly crawled, directories, blogs etc..

But it's good to absorb whatever one can. Even if someone comes away with a few ideas they didn't have before to improve their bottom line, it's worth the small price of this book.

2 out of 5 stars Outdated, outdated, outdated.......2006-04-04

I'm sure this book was cutting edge when it was first published in February of 2004, but now it's for the most part outdated. For the absolute beginner to this area, there are some good general points, but references to long-since defunct or consolidated web companies (Urchin, Inktomi, etc) make it difficult to understand just what's still relevant. Google and Yahoo (and soon Microsoft) are defining the new landscape of this field as we speak...Try the new book from IBM press, "Search Engine Marketing"....chock full of the latest (as late as can be in this field) info.

3 out of 5 stars Good writing, but too vague.......2005-12-14

This book is fairly well-written, but ultimately, it's frustrating because it doesn't tell the reader how to deal with specific search engine ad programs. Instead, Catherine Seda talks about categories of search engine advertising like "Fixed Placement," "Pay for Placement," "Submit URL," and "Trusted Feed." I keep reading these categories and wondering, "Is the model she's referring to here like Google? If so, how is Google different? How do all these programs rate for popularity, bang for the buck, etc.?" I guess Ms. Seda avoided these specifics so that her book didn't look outdated too quickly. I'd rather have a book that was extremely valuable at one point than one that tries to dance around the specific facts I'm craving.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent information about search engine advertising.......2005-10-24

This is an excellent book on search and pay per click advertising. I have read plenty of books, courses and e-books on the subject and find myself consistently going back to this book for advice. Take plenty of notes and a highlighter when you go through this book because you will learn tested strategies that you hope your competition will not know.

Chapter 4 on "Copywriting tips to improve your click-through rate" is a good chapter to help you boost your ad campaigns. Catherine takes the fundamentals of direct marketing and applies it to search advertising. For example, "state a benefit", "offer an incentive", "create a sense of urgency" and "provide a call to action" are necessary to differentiate yourself from the rest.

SUZANNE PITNER HAS WRITTEN A BOOK THAT IS SOMEWHAT OVER PRICED AT $14.95, ESPECIALLY WHEN ADDING TO THAT THE COST OF SHIPPING. IN NO CHAPTER OR PARAGRAPH DOES SHE GO INTO MUCH DETAIL, ALTHOUGH THERE IS SUFFICIENT INFORMATION TO PUT THE WANNABE BOOKSELLER TO THINKING. ONE WOULD HAVE EXPECTED MORE GUIDANCE FROM A BOOK TITLED "YOUR GUIDE..."

2 out of 5 stars I would not recommend this book.......2006-04-11

The book is ok, if you have extra money to spend and you want to read all there is. But, I can not recommend it for Amazon or other sellers like Half or ABE, because it is totally outdated. It was probally a good starting book in it's time, as it was written in 2002. There are some other books much better written and much more content. I would not waste my money. Sorry!

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Still Required Reading.......1999-10-21

I still tell everyone I know to read this, except my clients--I want them to hire me instead of using it themselves. True, some of the links no longer work, but there is at least one great idea on almost every page of this book, any one of which could make the book pay for itself a hundred times over.

2 out of 5 stars Good ideas but too far out of date to be really useful.......1999-09-09

Lots of good ideas to follow up on but it is now so far out of date its usefulness is dramatically reduced. Many of the web sites it discusses don't exist anymore, others now charge for services the author states are free. Indeed, the author's own web site, which he promises will provide updates, no longer exists. Given how out of date it is, the book should be sold at half the list price. I feel ripped off.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent advice for new businesses on the web.......1999-07-24

This book is full of practical advice for businesses who are new to the internet. The author has obviously had considerable experience of helping to establish web sites. If you only want one book about internet marketing , this is the one I would recommend.my only reservation about this book is that it is two years old and some of the web sites mentioned in it no longer exist.

      5 out of 5 stars A Most Interesting Book.......1998-10-30

Not the first that I have read on the subject but certainly the best. I now refer the book as being the one to buy if you're only going to buy a single book on Web marketing.

1 out of 5 stars A load of bunk that didn't help at all!.......1997-09-02

This book is supposed to be about what? Increasing hits and selling? Yeah right. My hits didn't budge and I followed what the author discusses to the letter

The core of his approach is a 12-step process to target your audience, refine your message, and deliver it as a service rather than a sales pitch. And he insists that you have a real service to offer, which helps companies rethink their relationship with their customers--especially those online who can spot an advertisement disguised as a garbage give-away site in less than three clicks. He also covers the best places to put your message, good advice on dealing with money over the net, and some success stories to inspire and fuel the imagination. Included is a CD-ROM of Internet access software.

1 out of 5 stars An outdated, elementary lesson in Internet Marketing.......1998-06-22

Good try, Mathiesen. Millions of people are scrambling for the answers to 'Net marketing and e-commerce questions; so I can't fault you for trying to answer their call. But don't waste trees publishing books that are outdated in months. Put it on the 'Net. If you pride yourself in having a site that updates your book, don't let it be Netscape's site where your readers won't even find you with a site search. Are you still updating it?

Readers, why spend money on a book about a topic that is changing daily? One example is that Mathiesen mentions, "The Internet represents a communications tool that rivals television and will one day merge with television." Like WebTV, perhaps? Also, the book brags that it offers free Netscape browser software ($50 value"), when Netscape is now downloadable off the 'Net for free.

If you must read this book, wait for the new edition. Or buy this one and marvel about how much has changed. Better yet, communicate with people in the industry, read 'Net and computer magazines, and surf for answers.

5 out of 5 stars The New Book Publishing Model.......2000-10-04

Authors and publishers are discovering an innovative way to write, produce and promote their books and the new way is faster, easier and cheaper. New software accelerates typesetting, new machines automate printing and the Internet streamlines promotion. These technological improvements have spawned a fresh way to look at book publishing. The New Book Model covers all the bases and is a refreshingly innovative route for anyone with a manuscript.

Today, books are written in page-layout format instead of double-spaced courier typeface. Then the pages are converted into Adobe Acrobat (PDF) format for printing and conversion.

Just 500 books are printed using computer-driven high-speed laser printers. The softcover and hardcover books are indistinguishable from traditional ink-printed books. Prices are just slightly higher, per unit, but the quantity (and invoice) is much lower.

PDF and LIT files are generated for reading on eBook readers such as the Pocket PC.

Then finished books are sent to two or three selected agents, a few more are sent to publishers with a track records for that type of book, 3-400 are sent for review to genre-specific magazines, four or five are sent to specialized book clubs, about ten are sent to foreign publishers suggesting translation and a handful are sent to opinion molders in the author's field.

If an agent or publisher comes in with a good offer, the author sells out. If not, all the bases are covered: the book is out for review and the orders are starting to come in.

Most of the book promotion is done via email; the author's web site replaces brochures. The media kit is replaced by a Press Room on the web site. Avoiding printing and postage reduces promotion costs tremendously.

So, the New Book Model is a way to conserve time, inventory space and money while testing the market. More books are not printed until after they are sold. It is no longer necessary to tie up a lot of money and inventory in printed books.

Dan Logan's book cover the marketing and selling of your book. He reveals the three foundational steps, using net tools, developing your online presence, setting up your Web site, putting email to work for you, using newsgroups, creating & marketing eBooks, using Print-On-Demand (POD) services and integrating the Net into your other marketing efforts. Logan does not waste your reading time. He gets right to each point in this short but jam-packed book.

Dan Logan is a hands-on computer consultant, author and publisher. He writes from experience and generously shares what he has learned in these pages.

As the author of 113 books (including revisions and foreign-language editions) and over 500 magazine articles, I highly recommend this volume to publishers DanPoynter@ParaPublishing.com.
