I love it when a book comes along that points out web site functions I never realized existed. This book packs a lot of information into a compact read, which makes it easy to get through but steers you in exactly the right marketing direction. The way he assigns ratings to the various marketing techniques helps one decide what to tackle first.
A solid looks at the basics.......2007-10-14
As the author of the recently self-published Hokie Games: Virginia Tech Football Game by Game 1945-2006 I devoured the contents of this book to try to jump-start my Amazon sales. I can't speak to the results just yet as the portion of the suggestions that I have implemented has only been in place for a week or so.
In fact, part of the appeal of the book is that it's not supposed to show results yet. It's not a quick "make you book an instant Amazon bestseller" plan. The book has tips and techniques that grow your presence over the long haul. That's exactly what I was looking for and this book delivers.
The steps were easy to follow and the "why's" were well laid out. Obviously, the author did his homework on the subject of Amazon.

When I purchased this book, I was really quite skeptical. I figured that it was just a promotion of Amazon.com and not really any useful advice.
Then my wife and I published our first children's book, Santa and Sam's Big Secret through Outskirts Press. Although OP did a wonderful job of publishing the book, the major portion of publicity for the book was left up to us. We have been following some of the advice offered by Brent Sampson and we do believe that it is helping with the promotion of our book.
Sell Your Book on Amazon is an easy read. You can easily skip over chapters that you do not feel interest you, and still come up with many ideas that will help you to promote your book.

I wrote a book called, "Letters to My Friends: A No Guarantees Guide to Awakening." It took three years to write. I spent another year sending it to publishers before I finally found a small publisher willing to work with me.
The Great Day came. I held my baby in my hands. I knew the world would proclaim her beauty. I was wrong, very wrong. A few friends and friends of friends bought the book. I was stunned and hurt too. But I kept trying to market my book the old fashioned way. I contacted the major book chains. To them I did not exist. I sent over 100 books to bookstores, and I never got a single order. I sent about 100 books to major newspapers, and I never got a single review.
One local bookstore, New Renaissance Bookshop in Portland, Oregon was very helpful. But the support of one local bookstore was not enough. I was almost ready to give up, but instead I went to Amazon and joined the Amazon Advantage program. I sold perhaps 20 books. Victory at last! Amazon loved me and I loved Amazon! And then I did not sell another book on Amazon for about a month.
I was ready to give up. But I knew my book could help readers feel better about themselves. I had received dozens of touching letters that left me feeling happy that something I had done made a difference in the world. Besides, I needed the money. Family illnesses had depleted my bank account and my debt was mounting. So, instead of quitting, I did an Amazon search for books on marketing books, and I found, "How to Sell Your Book on Amazon," by Brent Sampson.
I wish I had found this book a year ago. If you have a book you are trying to sell, or if you want to write a book, buy this book. Unless you are that rare writer who pens a bestseller, you will find yourself alone in a big jungle. Amazon gives you a path out of the jungle, and Brent Sampson's book is the guide.
Honestly, I have just started implementing his suggestions. So I have lots of work to do. After I finish this review, I will ask him to be my Amazon friend. I might ask him to review "Letters to My Friends: A No Guarantees Guide to Awakening." He said to mention my book as often as possible without being obnoxious. And finally, he said Amazon friends are important. You see, if you become my friend, whenever anyone goes to your Amazon profile and clicks on my picture in your Friends section, there's a chance I will sell a book. And if someone clicks on your picture in my Friends section, you might sell a book. So, do you want to be my friend? Good heavens, I feel like a little kid again.

For anyone looking to establish a web presence, this book is a great place to start. Geared especially for authors or publishers, the information is nevertheless highly relevant for any online entity seeking publicity. If you have something to say or to sell and you want to get your name out there (or at least your website), then getting this book is a no-brainer.
To avoid "overwhelm," I recommend that you read the whole book to get an overview and then start over and take it chapter by chapter. Ms. Sansevieri stuffs a lot onto these pages, and no matter how long you've been on line, you'll find some tips or hints you either didn't know about, or haven't utilized. My own website is going to see improvements thanks to this book, and I am going to follow my own advice and go back to chapter one to begin them. If you're thinking you've heard it all before and don't need the book, I would beg to suggest otherwise. Can you really risk not getting the latest scoop on what works and what doesn't? Do you really want to? If you've been on Penny's mailing list for a long time, you might have seen much of what the book contains; but here it is, in a nutshell. The best of her strategies and ideas, including lots of links and webpages to help. You can scrounge around the web trying to learn this, piecemeal, or you can get the book and jump into lightspeed. My copy is super marked already with things I need to do, and I look forward to having these steps in place. And, by the way, do you like armchair travel? Chapter 3 on "Selecting a Spokesperson" is particularly helpful for those who must find a new face for their organization. Chapter 9 on "Crisis Management" provides an excellent, streamlined synthesis of both practical and theoretical perspectives on how to deal with disasters in the media. I came across some of George McKenzie's products during an extensive search online. I'm glad I did! I'm starting my own business and had no idea where to start with getting the word out. You Can Be On TV And It's Easier Than You Think.......2003-08-08
Unless you feel like spending your entire career trying to figure the ends and outs of using TV for public relations, free advertising, internet marketing, website promotion, and small business publicity then I'd say just "listen" to what a pro tells you. And not just "any" pro.
You'll definitely want to check out George McKenzie. If you've ever heard anything by him then you'll know what I mean. You really "would" have to be in the public relations field, or have a relative working in it, to get anyone to spill the beans like George does.
Sure, you could pay someone to do all the work for you. Let them make all your decisions while you wonder whether they are acting in your best interests, or theirs. I'd rather be "in" that loop that out.
With the priceless insider's look that George provides, you're definitely "in" the loop, in control and you get the benefit of years of training and experience that could only come from actually having been in the business and worked thousands of successful PR campaigns.
I highly recommend this "fly on the wall" insider's look at how to use TV to boost sales. Because if you put these tips and tricks to work that's exactly what will happen.

Not "best practices" and not always accurate.......2002-04-29
I wanted to like this book. But I was taken aback by the author's attitude toward email campaigns - he says you'll never get anywhere if you don't use opt-out marketing to build a list. People will complain, but you can find an ISP that ignores their complaints. I was also surprised to find him radically misinformed about search engine traffic. Most people who have a web site in a specialized niche find search engines bring them lots and lots of beautifully targeted visitors, but he says that only sites with megabudgets get search engine traffic. His discussion of meta tags is out of date as well. He has some good ideas, but I hope people don't take him as an authority.

When O'Keefe's first book on Internet publicity came out I wrote a long review. Now I'm older and lazier, but thank goodness he isn't. O'Keefe didn't just revise his original book (one of THE best Internet 'how to' books of all time), he's completely
re-written it from scratch. If you need to know the 'nuts and bolts' of how to DO Internet publicity today, you won't find a more useful, up-to-date guide anywhere. In fact, this book is a standard for all 'how to' books. Clear, throrough, detailed,
'battle-tested' and truly useful. Five stars isn't enough.

This book has an approachable, plain English writing style geared to anyone interested in Internet publicity (not just the big corporations). "Using the invaluable information inside George
McKenzie's suite of excellent products, I took a
bit different path. I incorporated George's great
advice with what I learned from Trout & Ries in
their excellent books, and here's what I did...
I took what's inside George's excellent resource
and adapted it to a specific need I had ...
Rather than send out a bazillion PR releases to
lots of folks who might not want my news, I
concentrated just on folks in my target market.
Using George's stellar advice, I attracted 42
international business people and marketers to a
project I was doing, instead of trying to attract just
strictly reporters. Why did I do that? To also gain
access to their knowledge, reputation, (and their
customer lists.)
So I "killed two birds with one stone' by following
this path. My recommendation to you is that you
actually LEARN why George's strategies are so
powerful. Spend some time on your strategy,
and then use George's excellent and proven

This, like a couple other products of George McKenzie's that I have purchased, was very useful and provided me with more information that I hoped for. It saved me a lot of time and a lot of money, had I just learned from trial and error, which I would have done if I didn't come across this. I've been recommending it to friends as well as other students in the MBA program I'm currently enrolled in. (Yes, I'm in an MBA program, but this was more practical and useful than my marketing classes!)

A Very Unique Publicity Seminar - I Give It Five Stars!.......2003-08-11
George has covered all the bases in this awesome four hour audio seminar. His guests are all experts from different media such as radio, television, newspaper, public speaking and the Internet.
Each interview was just fascinating. Each person revealed the inside workings of their respective media. Normally, when you read a publicity book its all about how to get in the newspapers. But this seminar series went into depth about all the major media.
I got the most out of the section about news releases. For example, the tip on about how to find a local angle has helped me in writing my first news release.
I specifically used the "piggybacking" technique, which allowed me to write a dynamic and interesting release WITHOUT having to come up with any "news" of my own. That was genius! (By the way, now I watch the local news and read the local paper with a totally different mindset)
I had been spending a lot of money (thousands of dollars) using all kinds of different paid media and in 30 minutes I got the same results for FREE using the press release strategy that was revealed in the audio seminar series.
I give this product an enthusiastic five stars. You will too!

I've got a majority of George's information and cassette products including Inside Stuff and once I started listening I didn't want to stop because you picked up many tips and "angles" without a lot of fluff and filler. The Public Relations campaigns shouldn't be as intimidating or expensive as some firms want you to believe. If you are a self-starter, then you should be able to take this information and capture the publicity that you need for your product or service on a more economical basis. And you can do it without looking like a beginner or making silly mistakes. Get it and use it.

I read this book and absolutely loved it. Steve really is the father of ways to get attention for free on the Internet, and in addition, he is one of the best writers I have ever read. I became friends with him after reading this book and contacting him to ask him to take my company on as a client (he said no, by the way). I understand from him that an updated edition is on the way soon. Woo hoo!
Even the Author Thinks This Book is Out of Date.......2000-09-14
I am the author of "Publicity on the Internet," and I agree that it's out of date. Written in 1996, how could it possibly be up-to-date? It covers Prodigy, GEnie, and CompuServe (mostly irrelevant now) as well as AOL and the Web (more relevant than ever). Several chapters are still worth reading: using e-mail news releases, booking chat tours, and dealing with flames. Skip the demographics chapter. This book is strong on techniques for communicating online that have not changed, but it's also lacking examples from the last several years.

If you want to study internet advertising history,this is a great book.Other than that,it is a complete waste of time,effort and money.I am surprised that you can still see and buy this outdated book on the bookstore shelf.

If you are able to log on and see this via Amazon you are already too advanced for this book. I guess if I run out of bathroom tissue I may find a use for this book. Other then that it is a waste.
