5 out of 5 stars Great Read.......2005-02-10

This is an excellent book for hotel and travel managers as it contains tons of useful information and practical advice. Wheather you have an inhouse webmaster or are outsourcing the task (like I do), it will help you market better on the internet. I read it along with Heads In Beds-Hospitality and Tourism Marketing, and have improved my marketing activities ever since. Now I'm annoying my colleagues by telling them to read both. But those who did were grateful. A must read.

5 out of 5 stars well worth every cent I paid.......2004-07-11

Our family is opening a modest Inn in Bangkok, Thailand later this year, so I decided to purchase this book after reading all the rave reviews. I started browsing through this book today and boy am I impressed! The title of this book seemed rather generic at first, but it more or less covered everything I wanted to know about how to market for my inn on the WWW.

Topics that were of most interest to me included: increasing hits for your site on popular search engines, tips for creating great websites, how to issue press releases and how to get listed on pertinent directories.

The author obviously put in ALOT of research before putting pen to paper to write this book. The recommended websites alone (at the end of each chapter) are well worth the money spent. My only complaint is that many of the recommended links are outdated or broken - but this is by no means the fault of the author... A must buy!

5 out of 5 stars A Classic for all Travel Related Businesses.......2004-03-31

I am in the process of starting my own specialized tour business and brought this book out of hibernation for review. I had purchased it a couple years ago and it has just been marking time.

The author has done a superb job of guiding someone through the minefield of travel marketing --- and her advice still holds up to date.

I'm sure someone can find fault with not being 'up to date' since 9/11, yet this is flawless strategy that one only needs to update by adding a Google Adwords program, and possibly some eBay listings.

Reminds me of buying a mint 5 year old Porsche, which still offers all the amenities, yet one could upgrade the sound system if you wanted.

If you are going into the travel business, or almost any business for that matter, this is a classic that you can use and adjust accordingly to fit your niche.

Well worth it.

5 out of 5 stars One for the Bookshelf.......2002-02-13

Marketing on the Internet can lead you down a series of complicated and confusing paths. But, if you're in charge of marketing a destination or lodging, gain the upper hand by reading Susan Sweeney's "Internet Marketing for Your Tourism Business."

As soon as you begin thumbing through this 562-page resource, you¹ll want to begin highlighting important passages. Whatever you do, resist that temptation. Why? Because if you start highlighting the important stuff, the entire book will be yellow before you know it!

Sweeney discusses basic marketing principles, web site design, the importance of search engine placement, targeting tourism newsgroups and mailing lists, building web site traffic, using e-mail effectively, developing link strategies with complementary businesses, advertising on line, accepting online reservations, maximizing media relations, and determining if webcasting is right for your site.

I love the fact that Sweeney uses real world examples from the travel industry to illustrate her points throughout the book. You¹ll learn how the Expedias of this world made it to the top.

"Internet Marketing for Your Tourism Business" is packed with tips that any tourism professional can use to enhance his or her company's presence on the web. Even if you don't have time to read the book thoroughly, it's worth the cover price for the massive Appendix. It¹s got a great section defining web terms, as well as a comprehensive list of Internet marketing resources.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Book On Tourism Internet Marketing.......2000-07-06

This book is incredible. I am a bed and breakfast operator and I wanted to have a serious online presence, but didn't know how. I searched was looking for an Internet marketing book and was astonished when I found this book which was written specifically for my industry. This book is fantastic and was just the tool that I needed to begin implementing my online marketing strategy. I would recommend this book to all Tourism operators who have an online presence, or are considering going online.

4 out of 5 stars buy it for your dad!.......2004-11-21

I havent read this book myself. I bought it on Amazon and had it shipped to my father so that he would quit calling me to do his Priceline bidding. "You can do it, Dad." "No, I can't. I need a room in Denver Sunday night."

Now he's done his first bid himself without talking to me. He thought the book spoke to him at his level and was easy to understand. He got a $149 room for $60 on his own. The book more than paid for itself with just his first bid!

5 out of 5 stars Demystify Priceline with this book........2004-11-21

This book takes the mystery out of bidding via Priceline. It also lets you know when you should use Priceline and when it would be better to use conventional reservations. The tips this book give regarding the use of several message boards on the Internet is also invaluable. I really enjoyed the information about the "bid grid" when trying to win hotel rooms. Great work Sascha!

5 out of 5 stars Great Book to Save Money.......2004-11-18

Priceline.com is a great website to save on your travels. This book is great to learn how to use the website efficiently and save tons of money. I stayed in the hotels that I thought I could never and had my dream vacations I thought I would not be able to afford.

5 out of 5 stars Very informative!.......2004-11-12

I have been bidding on Priceline for almost a year now, and have gotten some great deals. Our family has been able to afford to travel places we could've only dreamed of before because of Priceline. But I still didn't quite understand how it all worked. So I bought this book, hoping for more insight. It gave me that, and so much more. This book explains how to bid in simple language that anyone can understand. I picked up alot of tips that I was unaware of before, which will help me in future bidding. I plan to buy a copy for friends who have asked "How did your get that $300 a night hotel for $50?!". If you're looking to save money on travel through Priceline, this book is a must-read!

5 out of 5 stars Note from the author.......2004-11-11

Just thought I'd respond to the bad review below. I'm not surprised the reviewer found the book redundant. This isn't a book for people who are already Priceline experts. It's for people who haven't used Priceline much, might be confused by its strange way of doing things, and want to save lots of money on travel. I explain all of Priceline's details and jargon in plain English for non-geeks. "For Dummies" books have a lot of repetition because they're big on hand-holding -- we want to make sure you stay with us every step of the way.

The book is an introduction to saving money with Priceline; if you're already an expert, you may want to buy it for your friends and family so you don't have to bid for them any more!

I personally think the book is great, but you could have predicted that, huh?

    Book Description

    INTRODUCTION

This book is a guide to the most interesting radio programs in the world. Such a guide was never necessary before, because you couldn't get all the radio stations in the world, only the dozen or so in your town. Now the Internet, as it has changed so much else, is changing that. If you are one of the millions of people who have already checked out Internet radio, you know what an astonishing variety of great radio is out there. You could get lost forever exploring it all. This book is designed to help you find radio you love, and reduce the time you spend stumbling around looking for it. If you have never tried Internet radio, this book is also a getting-started guide, showing you, step by step, how to get connected.

The potential of Internet radio is amazing. Every day more stations come onto the Net, every day their streams improve, every day they figure out how to make their web sites more helpful to listeners. Every day you can find some great new radio program you never knew was out there, and fall in love with radio all over again. Radio is changing into something completely new, more powerful, more various, and more useful. The change is not complete. Those of us lucky to live in high-bandwidth neighborhoods feel it first, while computer users in the United Kingdom, for example, not only have limited bandwidth, but mostly still pay for it by the minute, holding back the day when it becomes practical for use as radio. But if the timing of the change is yet to be seen, its shape is already clear.

The one great limitation constraining radio throughout its history has been geography. Except for a few hobbyist "DXers," trying to catch skipping signals in the night, listeners have been mostly limited to radio stations in their own neighborhoods. You may remember a great radio station in the town where you used to live, or one you heard on vacation, but you could never listen to them from where you are now. Well now you can. That is exactly what Internet radio allows.

So it is no wonder that both the number of listeners and the number of stations on Internet radio is exploding. Every day, 200,000 new listeners tune in. Most broadcast stations have found their way to the Internet by now, so if you remember a program you once heard in Paris, it is probably on the Net. Far more exciting than the sheer numbers is the breadth and depth of the programming. Freed from the economic and legal restraints that limit what is on the airwaves, Internet radio offers something for nearly everyone.

Whether you're interested in learning Portuguese, scoping out the latest in African music before it hits the stores, or getting first-hand news from the latest flash point of confrontation, there is a radio station broadcasting live right now to bring you just what you're looking for. And in addition to broadcast stations that extend their signal over the Internet, the ease of Internet radio has also led to a boom of Net-only stations, such as the poetry-intensive station a professor hosts from his office in an English department.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Internet Radio.......2003-05-25

Internet Radio offers information on access to thousands of radio stations, world-wide and in almost every cultural category. Radio listeners who suffer from weak reception of local stations or do not share the taste or politics of local broadcasters will find a treasure of choices.

The author's politically-correct and lefist politics are evident in his diatribe against "Right-Wing" radio stations (p.269) and in other sermons dispersed in his text. Some stations may not have been listed for those listeners.

However, readers will discover a vast choice of radio stations, delivering music, talk, drama, analysis and windows on cultures the world. Methods for connection and ratings of broadcasts abound.

      Book Description

The story of the Wire Act and how Robert Kennedy's crusade against the Mob is creating a new generation of Internet gaming outlaws. Gambling has been part of American life since long before the existence of the nation, but Americans have always been ambivalent about it, what David Schwartz calls the "pell-mell history of legal gaming in the United States" is a testament to our paradoxical desire both to gamble and to control gambling. It is in this context that Schwartz examines the history of the Wire Act, passed in 1961 as part of Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy's crusade against organized crime and given new life in recent efforts to control Internet gambling. Cutting the Wire presents the story of how this law first developed, how it helped fight a war against organized crime, and how it is being used today.

The Wire Act achieved new significance with the development of the Internet in the early 1990s and the growing popularity of online wagering through offshore facilities. The United States government has invoked the Wire Act in a vain effort to control gambling within its borders, at a time when online sports betting is soaring in popularity. By placing the Wire Act into the larger context of Americans' continuing ambivalence about gambling, Schwartz has produced a provocative, deeply informed analysis of a national habit and the vexing predicaments that derive from it. In America today, 48 of 50 states currently permit some kind of legal gambling. Schwartz's historical unraveling of the Wire Act exposes the illogic of an outdated law intended to stifle organized crime being used to set national policy on Internet gaming. Cutting the Wire carefully dissects two centuries of American attempts to balance public interest with the technology of gambling.

            2 out of 5 stars Outdated.......2007-03-19

This book is an outdated compilation of e-commerce JOURNAL articles related to the travel industry (circa 2002).

Some of the articles may have once been useful, while others are poor studies by graduate students that have little relevence.

I'm not sure how this book constitutes a "handbook". It has no direction, guidance or thesis.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for those intersted in Usability, and related issues, in the context of Tourism.......2006-07-25

Anyone interested in the field of Usability will find this book a useful resource. Readers interested in Usability in the context of Tourism (Travel) will find this book to be a gem.

The content of the book is not geared for the general consumer and is aimed at Researchers, Faculty and students.

4 out of 5 stars nice analysis of travel websites.......2005-09-10

Mills provides a set of research papers about the travel websites that have sprung up on the Internet. This area has turned into a booming field. People are spending large sums to book via those websites - for planes, hotels, cars, and holidays in general.

So the book provides a good backdrop to those events. The papers' authors analyse various aspects of the websites, and how consumer behaviour might favour some over others. If you are working at one of these websites, you might well want to get a copy of this book. Some wisdom might be gleaned here. Perhaps by your competitors, if not by you.

1 out of 5 stars Old, bad and good for nothing.......1999-06-14

I defenetly do not recommend this book. I have had a look at it, and it has nothing to do with hospitality, travel or tourism. This is the worst book i have seen that has something to do about internet. It is only a guide of how the Internet works.
