    Book Description

This book is the first one in English to focus in depth upon the private international law problems raised by the sale of goods. It begins with the substantive law and practice, and uses this as the basis for a comparative and critical discussion of the private international law issues. Examples of the typical obligations of the buyer and seller are also provided. International Sale of Goods in the Conflict of Laws is a strong new addition to the Oxford Private International Law Series and covers everything from torts to e-commerce. Contracts of sale with a cross-border element are an everyday occurrence and one which is becoming ever more common with the advent of modern communications technology. For example, where, for jurisdictional purposes, is the place or performance of the obligation to pay for goods? Where software is sold over the Internet, is this a sale of goods contract and, if so, where are the goods delivered? Foreign judgments as to title raise complex questions as to enforcement, recognition and res judicata. As regards choice of law, sales-specific problems arise to a large extent from the interaction of contractual obligations and title matters which are central to the sale contract and the complex characterisation questions which ensue. They arise from the enactment in many countries of the Vienna Convention, from the complex inter-relationship between buyer, seller and third parties and from sales-specific domestic legislation which may be mandatory irrespective of the applicable law. The book is concerned not only with contractual disputes that can arise out of the international sale of goods but also with torts, such as conversion and negligent misstatement, that can arise out of this type of contract. Restitutionary and proprietary claims can also arise. Special attention is paid to both the jurisdictional and choice of law problems that occur in cases of business to business e-commerce.

      Book Description

This work provides a much-needed detailed treatment of the international sale of commodities. It focuses on all the key issues in international commodity sales, including the contractual construction of FOB and CIF terms, import/export licenses, frustration and risk, termination for breach, and damages. An important feature of the book is the comprehensive analysis of the legal principles that arise from terms of the standard contracts promulgated by trading associations such as GAFTA and FOSFA. The book also includes detailed coverage of all the important recent statutory developments in the law of sale, namely, the Carriage of Goods by Sea Act 1992 and the Sale of Goods (Amendment) Act 1995. There is also in-depth analysis of the UN Convention on the International Sale of Goods.

      Book Description

THE BRAND GAP is the first book to present a unified theory of brand. Whereas most books on branding are weighted toward either a strategic or creative approach, this book shows how both ways of thinking can unite to produce a “charismatic brand”—a brand that customers feel is essential to their lives. In an entertaining two-hour read you’ll learn:
      • a new definition of brand

      • the five essential disciplines of brand-building
      • how branding is changing the dynamics of competition
      • the three most powerful questions to ask about any brand
      • why collaboration is the key to brand-building
      • how design determines a customer’s experience
      • how to test brand concepts quickly and cheaply
      • the importance of managing brands from the inside

Also see: THE BRAND GAP second edition, which includes a 220-term brand glossary and premium softcover binding.

      FROM THE BACK COVER

Not since McLuhan's THE MEDIUM IS THE MESSAGE has a book compressed so many ideas into so few pages. Using the visual language of the boardroom, Neumeier presents the first unified theory of branding -- a set of five disciplines to help companies bridge the gap between brand strategy and brand execution. Those with a grasp of branding will be inspired by what they find here, and those who would like to understand it better will suddenly "get it." This deceptively simple book offers everyone in the company access to "the most powerful business tool since the spreadsheet."

"Finally, a book that cuts to the heart of what brand is all about -- connecting the rational and the emotional, the theoretical and the practical, the logical and the magical to create a sustainable competitive advantage. Everyone in the company should read this book, not just the three people with 'brand' in their titles." --Susan Rockrise, Worldwide Creative Director, Intel

"A pleasure to read. THE BRAND GAP consistently provides deep, practical insights in a light, visual way. Discover the power of imagery and the role of research in building a heavy-duty brand -- without the heavy-duty reading." --David Aaker, Author of "Brand Leadership" and "Building Strong Brands"

"Neumeier stands out among brand-savvy professionals. His experience as a designer, writer, and strategist lends realism to his five disciplines of brand-building. Anyone who needs a deeper understanding of the creation, management, and evolution of brands should grab this book with both hands and start reading." --Patrick Fricke, Manager of Print and New Media Design, Kodak

"This is not just another book on brand. This is the only book you'll need to read in business, engineering, and design school." --Clement Mok, Design enterprenuer/President of AIGA

"THE BRAND GAP is an original. It describes the full range of creative interdependencies that need to be managed in concert, but in a language so plain, crisp, and simple that you suddenly 'see' the concept of brand--and can act boldly on it." --Peter Van Naarden, Director of Global Brand for Hewlett-Packard Co.

"THE BRAND GAP couldn't be more timely. Just when we're at our most skeptical about corporate motives, along comes a book that shows how to evaluate and develop a brand in a straightforward and honest manner." --David Stuart, Brand Designer and Co-Founder of The Partners, London

"This is an important work, with just the right level of accessibility. Despite our overexposure to brand theory these days, THE BRAND GAP is the first book that seems fresh and relevant." --Richard Grefe, Executive Director, The American Institute of Graphic Arts

"A well-managed brand is the lifeblood of any successful company--and Neumeier shows us exactly how to do it. Read this book before your competitors do!" --Tom Kelley, General Manager of Ideo/Author of "The Art of Innovation"

      4 out of 5 stars I love this book.......2007-10-10

Of all the marketing books I have, this one makes the most sense. More than just quips and anticdotes, it is actual research and experience. I recommend it to my friends and family.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST read for ANYONE with a job... SERIOUSLY!.......2006-11-06

This is one of the best books ever written. It is insightful for consumers, for businesses, for marketing professionals and... well, anyone! It makes you think, it makes you see marketing and advertising in a whole new way, and it will make you smarter - period. I think this should be mandatory reading in high schools across the world.

Do not attempt to be a web designer, an advertising professional, or an enterpreneur until you read this book.

5 out of 5 stars shortest treatise on branding .......2006-09-01

in existence, that still tells most important things about branding you need to know.
It said nothing new to me, but then again I have read the authors and branding / positioning gurus Marty Neumeier mentions and quotes plus two dozen other books on branding and strategy.
So instead of doing it the hard way, like I did, you CAN actually find out most you need to know about branding from this rather small book during a three hour flight.
One thing I don't like about this book is its "look and feel", layout and fonts.
Its like the author wanted to be SO COOL and innovative SO BAD that he took it overboard. I found it annoying, not cool at all.

4 out of 5 stars Good read, makes you think.......2006-08-18

Brand Gap was a quick airplane read. It's layout and common sense language made it an easy read. The book had very good points about brands versus logos and some real world mistakes that companies make. I read the book four weeks ago and I'm still thinking about it! Somewhat shotty construction, though - my book binding fell apart.

5 out of 5 stars Full of information, very insightful.......2006-08-13

This is a delightful little book, easy to read, in easy to understand langauage.

More importantly, it is very insightful. One of the biggest problems in marketing is the concept that buying is a rational decision. Neumeier makes it easy to understand that the first step in the buying process is emotional connection. This concept is not new. As Neumeier quotes Ben Franklin, "Would you persuade, speak of interest, not reason."

The author makes a good case for importance of marketing (rational) and advertising (creative) working together to make 1 + 1 = 11. He also show the way of the future for busniess with bringing together teams of the best in field rather than trying to employ all under on roof. He takes a lesson from Hollywood to demonstrate this concept.

His insight into the misuse of focus groups is worth the price of the book times ten.

All in all you will find this book delightful to read and very insightful in many different facets of busiess. He does not bore you with the details and therein lies a bit of danger - that many people will miss some valuable concepts. It should be read often to keep the ideas and concepts fresh in mind.

      5 out of 5 stars Alphonse Mucha.......2006-04-10

Art lovers around the world recall with delight Mucha's wonderful portraits of Sarah Bernhardt. Mucha single-handedly revolutionized French poster art at the turn of the century with art nouveau advertisements for Moet & Chandon, Job, Nestle's, Benedictine brandy and "the flower of the nineties"; Monaco Monte-Carlo.

Mucha's work was an inspiration to architects and designers who adapted his style of sinuous flowers and plant motifs for designing buildings and furniture. Mucha's harmonious designs, sensitive colors and superb draughtmanship have earned him the reputation as one of the outstanding and influencial graphic artists of Europe.

This stunning and colorful book is the most accurate record of Mucha's work available. Included are 163 full-color plates, some appearing here for the first time since their original publication. A complete catalogue section contains 525 detailed and illustrated entries and an extensive bibliography of books, periodicals and exhibition catalogues.

Marina Henderson's introduction, "Women and Flowers," and Dr. Anna Dvorak's epilogue, "Illustrations for Books and Periodicals," describe with insight Mucha's life, his achievements and his philosophy.

In her follow-up to Skyscrapers, Judith Dupré has taken her initial concept and turned it on its side. Bridges, like its predecessor, is a large-format hardcover book that opens to an impressive span a yard across. The format lends itself well to the material, displaying the many exquisite panoramic shots of bridges in full splendor. The impressive black-and-white photographs convey the majesty, elegance, and beauty of these structures.

Bridges is more than a picture book, however. Dupré presents a chronological collection of more than 45 bridges, from early Roman aqueducts to the most recent accomplishments of this century. Each bridge is accompanied by text that, together with the photos, provides the reader with informative background, anecdotes, and cultural and historical context. For fact seekers, the relevant names and numbers are readily accessible. For the parents of inquisitive children, "cantilever" will roll from the tongue as easily as "tension" and "torsion."

Dupré quietly proclaims in her introduction, "The unassuming poetry of bridges reveals itself to those who would see them." The author manages to convey this very poetry by giving us the tools to understand the power and grace of the bridge.

      Book Description

Introduction by Frank O. Gehry. Opening to a dazzling full-yard span, this panoramic tour introduces more than fifty of the world's greatest bridges in 200 high-quality black-&-white photographs and an engaging text that sheds light on the historical and technological background of constructions that range from the ancient Roman Pont du Gard to the newly constructed Tsing Ma bridge in Hong Kong.

      5 out of 5 stars Magical books.......2007-09-27

I had a copy of this book in 2000 and lent it to a friend, but could not remember who. I found it when visiting the USA for the first time. It is simply the most magical and beautiful book in my collection, and from the front cover picture on the Internet, purchasers cannot see that it opens out and spans very very wide, just like a bridge in itself. I missed this book terribly, it is one of my treasures, so I was delighted recently to find that I could still buy it on Amazon. It will never be lent out again! I love the black and white photographs of all the world's most interesting bridges. Anyone would learn a great deal from it, and architects and surveyors would find it fascinating.

5 out of 5 stars So often we don't even realize what we're driving on.......2002-04-22

Every day we traverse bridges in our daily lives, scarcely to give them thought. Dupre pulls back the veil and brings highlight to these engineering feats. From the simple to the revolutionary, we are brought on a tour of bridges through time, and around the globe. The superlatives are here: the longest suspension bridge, highest, oldest. But it's not a book about the superlative; it's about what moves us forward in our quest for technology, and for our ability to move across space in a timely manner. It highlights those bridges that mean something to us: where the Romans said "let's make a permanent way of moving water." Where politics came into play and tried to prevent bridges that we can't imagine not being there like the Golden Gate Bridge. Bridges become important to history such as the ones over the Rhine during the World War. And sometimes when we make mistakes and things don't work out like we planned - the most spectacular example being the Tacoma Narrows Bridge that lasted all of 4 months.

But as she shows in her book "Skyscrapers," there is an intertwining of form and function, and where man built up in buildings, he builds out via bridges. The book's design even emphasizes - where Skyscrapers was an extremely tall and thin book, Bridges goes for width, to try and bring the spans into the range of the printed page. Yet so often, the task is not possible, and even on the wide pages the bridge disappears into the distance.

The book looks at the engineering involved, but does not dwell on it. Rather it celebrates how the improvement of engineering practices have been able to move man forward. A veritable love poem to something that we often take too much for granted.

5 out of 5 stars "Bridges" "Skyscrapers" "Churches".......2001-02-22

"Bridges" was the first of the uniquely-designed, well-written books by Judith Dupre' that I discovered. "Skyscrapers" then became a 'must-have' and now I'm eagerly awaiting publication of her "Churches" - these books contain marvelous black and white photo collections of subjects around the world, with a succinct and intriguing text about each. They invite repeated perusals, and I keep them, in their handsome jackets, where I can see and enjoy them again and again. Often, when I have a few moments, I like to reflect on the historical descriptions of these wonderous man-made miracles and re-study the photos. Of special interest may be the structures which one in fact has seen, perhaps many times. The books are well-indexed and provided with suggestions for further reading.

      3 out of 5 stars A bridge lover.......2000-12-19

I was a little disappointed in this book in that it really doesn't get into much detail about any of the bridges which are discussed. It's more of a "coffe table" book without out much informative depth. Nothing to really sink your teeth into. However, if you're not already familiar with any of the bridges covered in the book, or you're not a nut for bridges, then this book is a great introduction to a few of the most beautiful bridges to be seen. One neat thing that I did really like is that it is a very wide book which allows you a little better perspective of the true size of some of the bridges - you get long pictures instead of little ones of each bridge. That was kind of cool! My 5 yr old son loves "reading" this book to me!

5 out of 5 stars Bridges is spectacular!.......2000-07-02

As a history of the world's most famous & important spans this wide, wide book is a spectacular hit! Lots of details, fascinating photos & information. A must for those folks in your life who think bridges are the coolest!

Few man-made structures can combine technical skill with aesthetic beauty in such an imaginative way as the bridge. From ancient times to the present day, bridges have been a focus for man's creativity and enterprise. This enthusiastic account of bridges describes their history, how they are constructed as well as taking a look at the great bridges around the world. Innovative bridge projects planned for the future are examined, along with the ultimate purpose of the bridge - function or art form?

3 out of 5 stars You Can't Tell A Book By Its Cover.......2002-03-17

Encouraged by other customers' reviews, as well as my interest in learning more about bridges, I purchased this attractive volume. The price seemed awfully low for a work with such promise and, indeed, the photographs alone are worth more than I paid. But, having gotten through a scant 30 pages in which I encountered some errors easily checked [Xerxes was defeated at Thermopylae? The Etruscans were the forebears of the Greeks? The Brooklyn Bridge was in place in 1858?] I am left to wonder what else is hidden which I didn't spot. Who knows what may lurk in the engineering details of specific bridges and bridge types?

5 out of 5 stars Best book on this topic I've found!.......2001-01-07

As a modelmaker fascinated with large truss bridges and cable bridges, I had been looking for a good book on the topic -- one which would reveal enough structural detail for me to make a reasonable model for N-scale model train modules and layouts. At the same time, I wanted a book that would show the "famous ones" while also showing new, state-of-the-art megabridges from all over the world. This book does all of that, while giving great coverage of the history of bridges and while showing historical classics. The only thing it didn't do was to provide specific measurements, but the pics and scope of visual data make that needless for most people, anyway. I've looked at others since then to see whether there's a better one out there for my purposes, but I haven't found one.

5 out of 5 stars The Perfect Book on Bridges.......2000-05-18

This is exactly the type of book I was looking for. It's got beautiful four-fold pictures of completed bridges and those still in the construction phase; histories of the most popular bridges and bridge designers; and, my favorite part, a section on the technical aspects of how bridges are made.

It's a great combination of picture book and technical reference for all those interested in bridges.

4 out of 5 stars Everything You Always Wanted to Know about Bridges.......2000-03-28

How many types of bridges can you name? Yeah, yeah...suspension, truss, maybe bascule...but, guess what? There are many more types out there! Different types will give you different costs, sturdiness, aesthetics--you get the idea.

This book begins by explaining the basis types of structures. Then it describes some of the world's greatest spans, and next it talks about bridge catastrophes. Finally it discusses great bridge builders.

Meanwhile, the book is profusely illustrated with incredible photos, mostly color, some even in gatefold format. Sometimes you can even see before & after photos of bridge construction.

      5 out of 5 stars A Great Classic Adventure.......2007-06-10

Pierre Boulle, author of "Planet of the Apes," tells an impossible-to-put-down tale of a British officer and his men who are forced to build a bridge by the Japanese. Not to be missed!

3 out of 5 stars Bridge In A (Slightly) Different Direction.......2005-10-05

The charges are set against the pilings. The British commandoes lay hidden in the bush. The train is coming 'round the bend. Just then, a British colonel, a POW, takes a final walk over the bridge he helped build for his enemy and looks over the parapet. His blue eyes narrow. Something is wrong...

Those of you who think you know what will happen next, from seeing the Oscar-winning film adaptation of this novel, may be in for a surprise or two. Author Pierre Boulle's point seems less about the folly of war and of racialism (as was the case in the movie) and more about how a blind work ethic can make one betray the very things one holds dear, without knowing it.

It's tempting to look at this book and think of it as a literary dig at the proper, orderly Brits by a typically relativistic French author. But Boulle, a World War II French resistance fighter who was captured by the Vichy in the Far East, apparently wanted to use the real-life building of the bridge (in reality, there were two) by British POWs as an examination of how warfare tilts moral scales and turns lawfully-minded leaders into traitors.

It's an interesting position, presented here more in the form of a quasi-fable, or more to the point, two short stories joined together. In the first, we see British Col. Nicholson face off against Japanese Col. Saito, who expects the British to resign themselves to servitude, officers included. In the second, we watch a trio of British green berets prepare their attack on the bridge.

One of the movie's main characters, the one played by William Holden, is not in the novel, which is fine with me. I found the guy annoying. But the other characters don't come into greater focus for his absence.

Instead, they are rather colorless, especially Saito, presented here as a brutal drunkard with none of the panache that director David Lean and actor Sessue Hayakawa bestow on the character in the movie. It's especially hard to like Nicholson when Alec Guinness isn't giving us a spoonful of sugar with all that thematic medicine. He's more of a martinet here, dense to the point of ridiculousness, like when a subordinate suggests they paint the bridge after building it.

"The most we could do would be to give it a coating of lime - and a fine target that would make for the planes, wouldn't it," Nicholson counters. "You seem to forget there's a war on!"

That's about as close as the book comes to humor. It is tense at times, but slow-moving, and like other reviewers here I found the book lacking in narrative detail that would have made it feel more alive. It's a quick read, worth reading especially if you enjoyed the movie. But I missed the Nicholson Guinness played in the movie, and if you were a fan of the film, so will you.

4 out of 5 stars A Bridge Over Troubled Decisions.......2004-05-06

This is not one of those cover-all-the-details-of-a-battle or expose-the-brutality-of-war books. Instead of focusing on battles between men, this book focuses on battles within men. My brain joined the characters as they grappled with believable and conflicting issues like:
      - honor vs. survival
      - useful work that preserves dignity but helps the enemy vs. sabotage that undermines the enemy's plans and as well as personal dignity
      - pride of workmanship vs. the best interests of one's country

      - mission/orders vs. the value of human life

These and other issues get attention at varied intensity levels. They're all seen from the eyes of soldiers in a war zone, and it's not easy to determine the right thing to do. I got a window into the minds of the soldiers and enough detail to enable me to fully understand their dilemmas.

This book is well-written, and the action is spread out such that I wanted to keep turning the pages. I'm glad read it, but I'm also glad I didn't have to live it.

      4 out of 5 stars A Great Book.......2004-04-01

This was a very well written and well told story. It was a little slow at the start but once the Team 316 is introduced it became much better. I never wanted to put the book down.

5 out of 5 stars The Bridge. The Movie.......2003-11-14

OK. I don't normally (actually I never have) review a movie. I feel more comfortable with books. However, I reviewed Pierre Boulle's book last May and still see it as a Top 10 novel with great juxtapositioning of truly dicey moral issues.

But a couple of weeks ago, I was at my local library and someone was returning the "The Bridge over the River Kwai" DVD. I had seen the movie as a youngster and recalled that it deviated from the book to some extent, but nevertheless I wanted to see it again.

Well, barring the fact that it was made in 1957 and it had some of those odd exchanges of dialogue that marked scripts of 50 years ago, it was a magnificent movie.

Alec Guiness as Colonel Nicholsen was credible, understated, courageous, and faced with decisions alien to the world of a British Army Officer. All of which he played to Academy Award standards. Jack Hawkins as the head of Force 316, the demolitions group sent to blow up the bridge . . . 'bloody good idea, take a walk in the woods, lay some plastic explosive, and blow it up. Good show!' . . . . is excellent.

But the biggest surprise was William Holden, absolutely brilliant as the American Officer in a role written for him which did not exist in the book, a man who escapes from the prison camp and is then hospitalized in Med Cruise splendor, who is then asked to go back and assist Force 316 in the destruction of the bridge. Holden, clearly an excellent "big" actor in the 50's and the 60's, only wants to stay in the hospital where he is recuperating and drink fine scotch and play with the nurses (it's 1957 so it's all very up and up). How he is lured into the mission and to see his physical demeanor and style change is very well done.

Highly recommended. Larry Scantlebury. One time movie critic.

4 out of 5 stars might be the only bridge book you'll need.......2005-06-29

This is the meatiest bridge book I've ever seen. It is densely packed with solid information on every page, on all aspects of the game, and almost none of it for the beginner. I am nowhere near expert so I don't know how much of it will be "old hat" to them, but it's perfect for anyone wanting to leave the novice category and willing to spend a lot of time to do it. The book is divided into 12 sections by several different authors--6 on bidding, 3 on declarer play, and 3 on defense.

Section 12 (deceptive play by defenders) is almost worth the price of the book by itself. It feels like a tiny sliver of pages at the back, but the scope and variety of the ideas are stunning. You can spend half an hour getting to the bottom of a couple paragraphs.

The bidding sections require you to like 4-card majors, but aside from that they take a thorough look at ACOL from all angles, covering the thought processes behind "ordinary" bidding as well as numerous conventions. And the multiple authors frequently disagree with each other, allowing you to assess the merits of a particular method and tailor your bidding system. The section on slam bidding will even make you laugh a few times.

The drawback of this book is the hideous amount of typos, probably as many as one per page. The typos come in all shapes and sizes, and frequently inhibit properly understanding the material. I remember being puzzled over a player making a 2-level overcall on Kxxxx before I realized that an ace was missing.

5 out of 5 stars The MUST HAVE Ohio Covered Bridge Book!.......2004-10-26

Miriam Wood has done an excellent job in reviewing the history of Covered Bridges in Ohio. It is a resource that I have consulted again and again. It is an essential book to own for all old bridge enthusiasts and lovers of Ohio history. She has spent many years researching this subject and presents her material in a consise and interesting way. She has catagorized her writing of these lovely old bridges in geographical sections of Ohio and tells the history of bridges that are extinct and ones that are still available to enjoy, with directions for their location. Illustrations and rare pictures are included.

5 out of 5 stars Thorough History and Photo Essay.......2004-01-11

If you are interested in the history of Ohio's covered bridges, then this is the book for you. Miriam has taken her lifetime of interest and research into Ohio's covered bridges and boiled them down to an interesting story and photo-essay.

Every corner of the state is discussed and Miriam has latched onto photos that the rest of us have hunted unsuccessfully. In addition to the bridges, you'll learn who the builders were, how the various counties contracted for bridges, and how disasters and abuse took their toll.

Highest recommendation! (by an enthusiast with many other covered bridge books in his librbary)

4 out of 5 stars An EXCELLENT book on early timber bridges in Ohio!.......1999-07-20

Miriam Wood has written a very fine publication on the history of the timber bridge during the early years of Ohio's transportation system. Over the past 40 or so years, she has researched the covered bridges in each county and has compiled her findings in this interesting and informative book, which all bridge and history buffs should have on their book shelves. There are many old rare black and white photographs of the bridges, along with descriptions of them and their builders. The unique, artistic drawings by her husband, Richard, are yet another good reason to own it! It is a bargain at this price!
