Customer Reviews:
I wish I would have had this book about 10 years ago!.......2005-01-16
I'm a graduate student, and I got "Financial Basics" as a resource for a project I did last quarter. My project centered around measuring college students' financial awareness and proactiveness.
Book was an easy, non-threatening read. I started and finished "Financial Basics" during a 2.5 hour plane ride.
Great thing about the book is that you don't necessarily have to be a student (or former student) to benefit from the advice Knox presents. Everyone interviewed for the book had differing financial situations and education--from the financially clueless to the overly stingy and everywhere in between. Instead of trying to fit everyone into one black-and-white financial solution, she gave easy-to-follow, general tips on money management, credit card responsibility, and savings.
Excellent Primer for Students.......2004-12-16
I am a professional financial advisor and have had the opportunity to work with many clients in their 40's and beyond who haven't mastered the basics presented here by Knox. How I wish they had this book 20 years earlier to get them started on the right path - the time lost really hurts. The money management lessons are timeless, straightforward and essential for everyone, especially young adults striking out on their own. The writing is special - stories that help students relate (and make them want to keep reading). The lessons are doled out gently and casually, not more preaching. All-in-all, an excellent resource. I plan to give it to my clients' kids as they hit high school.
Your Credit Rating Counts.......2004-09-20
I sent Financial Basics with my nephew to college. It's a very practical money-management guide for students that generously uses student stories to illustrate the author's points. Most impressive to me is the section that reminds students that their credit rating, good or bad, will follow them after college graduation. She provides contact information for credit rating companies so students can view their own credit history.
Practical solutions to common money problems.......2004-09-11
Also available in a hardcover edition (0814290785, $39.95), Financial Basics: A Money-Management Guide For Students by certified public account, financial planner, and former university administrator and teacher Susan Knox shares hard-learned lessons about managing money when in college. Practical solutions to common money problems faced by students and family, as well as flexible money-management tips, tricks, and techniques for readers accustomed to handling their money in any of a variety of styles fill this solid, information-packed resource. An absolute must-have for any young adult entering the complex world of financial matters, especially when attending school far away from home.

common sense.......2003-06-29
This book only has common sense ideas in it. I generally like the motley fools products. However, this book should be purchased only by those who do not have a basic understanding of how to save or prepare for college. We all know it is best to start saving early and talk to people at the schools about how to get a scholarship.
Who Knew School Could be So Affordable?.......2003-03-29
This book tackles a daunting financial topic and makes it easy to digest. Best of all, it's only 125 pages, so I didn't have to commit hours and hours of my time to learn what I needed to know. The book offered charts, tables and plain English, distilling topics such as the Education IRA (now called the Coverdell ESA), 529 Plans (there are two main kinds of these and you can sock away up to $100,000 or more in them -- who knew??) and even paying for elementary school and grad school. Oh -- and did I mention that it's funny, too?

Book Description
While academic freedom enables members of the academic community to pursue their work, it can also become a source of conflict between faculty members as well as individual faculty and administrators. In most instances, conflict in an academic environment requires only a clear system in which to pursue resolution. The creation of such a conflict management system will ideally correct misunderstandings before they lead to greater problems, and as such, it is of crucial importance to every higher education institution.
Work and Peace in Academe assesses the nature of conflict in academic environments and describes practical ways to prevent and resolve unproductive disputes. Through stories, vignettes, and case studies, the author emphasizes the importance of integrity and trust to the ongoing success of any approach to managing conflict. To help readers develop effective conflict resolution systems, the book includes
-
A framework for understanding conflict in an academic environment
-
Suggested methods of conflict resolution
-
Identification of key players and resources involved in effective systems
-
Ideas for integrating dispute prevention, resolution, and management
-
Best practices in conflict management
Written for administrators and faculty leaders, Work and Peace in Academe will guide readers in developing a systematic approach to dispute resolution that preserves an institution’s culture, history, procedures, and practices.

Money management from a Christian perspective.......2003-12-18
An important fact to note about the author is that he is the "founder and president of Christian Financial Concepts, Inc., a ministry dedicated to teaching God's priniciples of financial management." (from the back cover) This doesn't affect the quality of his advice, but it may affect whether you buy this book as gift for someone else who may be an atheist or follow a religion other than Christianity.
Very Helpful for College Students with budgets.......1999-08-15
Larry Burkett's Managing Money book was wonderfully helpful. I am a college student and was really struggling with budgeting my money. By using this book, I was able to really see how my money was being spent, ways to change my spending habits, and ways to be smart about the money I have. I would recommend this book to any college students, high school students, or young adults who are struggling with using their moeny wisely.

Customer Reviews:
A very excellent and amusing book!.......2001-07-15
This is a great book, I loved reading it. Be careful when you pick it up because you might just get a tad distracted and want to read is all through! Overall, it has some major pointers on saving money, especially when it comes to food. Loads of hints.
Saving for the Future.......2001-04-21
This book is just jam-packed full of cost saving gems!! In fact, I have saved countless dollars through better management of my money through tips I learned in this book. Perhaps the best thing about this book were all the great tips for getting both summer employment and grant money. Lastly, unlike so many other money saving books I have attempted to plod through, I really found The Debt Free Grad fun to read. If I enjoyed my course work reading as much as this book, I would be an English major instead!
Not just for college students!.......2000-12-31
Murray Baker's Debt Free Graduate is an excellent resource. I work in college-level education, and have found the book to be very helpful in preparing information for students about how to be financially fit. Baker uses really practical examples of how we can save money in every aspect of our lives. I have definately picked up some tips that I can use, on everything from mutual funds to decorating my apartment for less... I highly recommend this book. It's a fun, easy read.
The Debt-Free Graduate:How to Survive College.......2000-12-17
Here's a book I wish someone gave me before I started College!
I was given this book as a gift and expected it to be a little difficult to read as it appeared to be a 'money' book. So I put it off a few weeks. Once I started reading, I was hooked. It's practical, comical and actually leaves you feeling excited about saving money, still enjoying the college experience but graduating with little to no debt. I believe that if I read this before I starting college, I would have had little problem graduating debt free. Some of the ideas are very unique and even discuss summer jobs, great tips on buying course books and housing. Other ideas are necessities every college student should know now, but also for life and in any career, such as some of the cost-cutting ideas and optimal ways to pay off any debt that may remain. The Debt Free Grad should be required reading for every college student!

As the cost of a college education continues to increase at a rate of about 9% annually—nearly three times the rate of inflation—more and more college students are taking out loans to cover tuition, fees, and other expenses. Median undergraduate student loan debt is currently close to $20,000, and graduate students end up with an additional $32,000 in debt upon graduation. Pile on thousands more in credit card debt, and many college students today graduate with massive financial burdens that they are not prepared to handle.
In Zero Debt for College Grads, noted personal finance expert Lynnette Khalfani provides a thorough roadmap for stress-free living that will allow recent graduates to focus on their burgeoning careers while navigating the ups and downs of their financial responsibilities.
""Zero Debt for College Grads,"" by Lynnette Khalfani, puts into plain English what many recent college graduates need to hear: lay off the credit cards and expenses and be a bit more realistic with your lifestyle.

Customer Reviews:
Nothing new here, you're paying for common sense.......2007-06-21
I was very disappointed in this book after seeing it highly praised in my daily newspaper's finance section. The useful information would make a much smaller book. The first third wastes time and pages saying, "you will learn...this book will teach you..." Well, I already have the book. You've sold me the book! Get to the point! The info about different types of college loans and refinancing them I had just found myself on the college financing Website, so I was disappointed she had no new information there. And how to pay off your credit cards quickly...duh! Pick a strategy: pay off higher interest rates first, lower balances first, or highest balances first, whatever floats your boat. The problem with that is it all requires money. I never learned how she paid off $100,000 worth of credit card debt in three years unless she made $100,000 more than she needed to live on in those three years. All she is teaching you is how to manage your vast income so it quickly pays off your vast indebtedness. The book I really need is how to pay off vast debt with inadequate income. This is not that book.
Helpful and Insightful.......2007-05-15
My mother loves saving money and making a budget so I grew up in an atmosphere of financial gain. After college, grad school, and entering the "real world" for the first time I found myself charging too much on my credit cards and having to pay high student loan fees. I heard Ms. Khalfani on the Russ Parr Morning Show and I decided to give her book a try.
Now there was a lot of information that did not pertain to me because I'm not heavily in debt, BUT everything she said was on point. She offers great money saving suggestions/options that I forgot about or was too lazy to actually do; she provides wonderful links and info on ways to "beat the system." For example, my mother has been nagging me for months to call my credit card company's to lower my interest rates. I slowed around to doing it but I was glad to read that Ms. Khalfani mentioned the same advice, she tells ppl how to get through to creditors, how to lower their interest rates, how to move their payment dates and why. Most of all she provides one of the best suggestions for credit card debt reduction.
Overall I found her book to be full of great information. This book is for those who truly want to pay off their bills and not just pay on them or live paycheck to paycheck. If you want to eventually, have more money in your pocket I suggest you buy this book.
Edited Aug. 7, 2007:
I strongly believe the author provides the readers with enough suggestions to bring in additional income. She spends an entire chp. discussing how to cut corners how to help you manage your debt. I can see her getting out of 100,000 dollars of debt by slicing her living expenses in half and getting another income flowing. I think anyone even with limited means can do this. Essentially what the author is saying is that if you live in a 1 bedroom, downgrade to a studio and get a part time job. Or move into a 2 bedroom with a reliable roommate. I think a lot of her tips are helpful. However, I do think for some who are aware with budgets and how they work I would recommend her other books, such as, The "Money Coach's Guide to Your First Million." If money is extremely tight and you are working on a really tight income with high debt I also recommend: "Girl, Make Your Money Grow!: A Sister's Guide to Protecting Your Future."
Book Description
Off to college. Excited. Nervous. Broke...
Finding a way to pay for college and live on a budget is not always easy, but it definitely beats paying off huge loans for the next 30 years. And these students are living proof that it can be done.

Great tips!.......2005-05-05
I first read about this book in the Washington Post and I ended up getting a copy for free! But i wanted to write how this book really breaks down all of your college money worries and makes everything seem manageable. And knowing there are so many other students out there who are having all the same thoughts and issues, and knowing they all got through it, really helps.

Customer Reviews:
Save your money and skip this book.......2006-09-04
This book is like a "roadmap" in the sense that it gives you the gravel and shovels to make a road, but no map to what I would call a strategy. Lots of details of tax rules and education procedures are inside, and in that sense it could serve as a supporting reference. Perhaps the book's Appendix G was destined to become the "strategy" portion of the text, but it is unfortunate that this appendix did not get out of its draft stage before the book got printed.
I recommend going to places like [...]'s college savings center and get everything that this text offers, with more details and actual strategy and ... dare I say it ... better written sentences.
