Strategies that are effective and legal for putting one’s assets safely out of reach

In today’s increasingly litigious world, the shielding of assets has become a prominent issue for financial planners, business owners, and high-net-worth individuals. Asset Protection details methods that are both legally and morally legitimate for protecting one’s assets from creditors, lawsuits, and scams.

Bringing economic common sense and legitimacy to an area that is drowning in gimmickry, two of today’s top lawyers examine the fundamental issues in this growing area, avoiding dense legalese to make the book accessible to anyone. Asset Protection covers everything readers want to know about:

5 out of 5 stars Best Book on the Subject.......2007-10-13

I've read several books on this subject and this one was by far the best. Many of the other books in the field have some rather dubious tactics listed, but this book focuses on reasonable steps people can take to protect their asstes that are legal and likely to stand up in court. I found this book to be a well organized, well written professional text in a field filled with a lot of books hawking expensive and legally questionable scams and schemes.

5 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING TREATISE!!!!.......2007-09-11

BUY IT. READ IT. THEN READ IT AGAIN. AND AGAIN. EACH TIME YOU READ IT YOU WILL PICK UP YET ANOTHER USEFUL NUGGET OF INFORMATION. THE UNIQUE THING ABOUT THIS 'BIBLE' IS THAT IT IS USEFUL FOR THOSE WISHING TO PROTECT ASSETS FROM FUTURE CREDITORS, AND JUST AS USEFUL FOR THOSE ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE FENCE, TRYING TO SEIZE ASSETS AS WELL. A VERY POWERFUL, DETAILED AND GENEROUS BOOK. NOT YOUR TYPICAL A/P BOOK. THE 'RIGHT' WAY TO SAFELY PROTECT YOUR ASSETS.

5 out of 5 stars Asset protection.......2007-05-12

This well-written book does a great job of dispelling a lot of the mis-information that currently abounds in the market place.

4 out of 5 stars Well researched.......2007-03-01

Jay Adkisson is my voice of reason in the field. This is heavily researched brain food for asset protection. The rule of law is constantly massaged and altered as the courts challenge provisions, and I always feel safest turning to Jay for his interpretation. In particular the Albright 291 Rptr. 538 ruling in Colorado has alot of LLC attorneys spooked. I'm sure we'll be hearing from Jay soon on this one.

5 out of 5 stars Above the Norm.......2007-01-17

Asset protection is a good practical sense guide on the areas of trust, business entities and a dose of reality. If your at a point where the accumulated assets is worth protecting for yourself, spouse, kids and family then this is the book to read. Its not too technical but down to earth business sense. I find this book is geared to people that have some familarity with the business environment. If you know why you want to protect your assets then this book is the next step.

In the revised and updated edition of Lean Thinking: Banish Waste and Create Wealth in Your Corporation, authors James P. Womack and Daniel T. Jones provide a thoughtful expansion upon their value-based business system based on the Toyota model. Along the way they update their action plan in light of new research and the increasing globalization of manufacturing, and they revisit some of their key case studies (most of which still derive, however, from the automotive, aerospace, and other manufacturing industries).

The core of the lean model remains the same in the new edition. All businesses must define the "value" that they produce as the product that best suits customer needs. The leaders must then identify and clarify the "value stream," the nexus of actions to bring the product through problems solving, information management, and physical transformation tasks. Next, "lean enterprise" lines up suppliers with this value stream. "Flow" traces the product across departments. "Pull" then activates the flow as the business re-orients towards the pull of the customer's needs. Finally, with the company reengineered towards its core value in a flow process, the business re-orients towards "perfection," rooting out all the remaining muda (Japanese for "waste") in the system.

Despite the authors' claims to "actionable principles for creating lasting value in any business during any business conditions," the lean model is not demonstrated with broad applications in the service or retail industries. But those manager's whose needs resonate with those described in the Lean Thinking case studies will find a host of practical guidelines for streamlining their processes and achieving manufacturing efficiencies. --Patrick O'Kelley

Book Description

In their landmark book The Machine That Changed the World, James Womack and Daniel Jones, two of the top industrial analysts in the world, explained how companies can dramatically improve their performance through the "lean production" approach pioneered by Toyota. Lean Thinking extends these ideas to provide a rallying cry for today's corporate leaders.

After a decade of downsizing and reengineering, most companies in North America, Europe, and Japan are still stuck, searching for a formula for sustainable growth and success. The problem, as Womack and Jones explain in Lean Thinking, is that managers have lost sight of value for the customer and how to create it. By focusing on their existing organizations and outdated definitions of value, managers create waste, and the economies of the advanced countries continue to stagnate.

What's needed instead is lean thinking to help managers clearly specify value, to line up all the value-creating activities for a specific product along a value stream, and to make value flow smoothly at the pull of the customer in pursuit of perfection. The first part of the book describes each of these concepts and makes them come alive with striking examples.

As Lean Thinking clearly demonstrates, these simple ideas can breathe new life into any company in any industry, routinely doubling both productivity and sales while stabilizing employment. But most managers will need guidance on how to make the lean leap in their firm. Part II provides a step-by-step action plan, based on in-depth studies of fifty lean companies in a wide range of industries across the world -- including Pratt & Whitney, Porsche, and Toyota.

Even those readers who believe they have embraced lean thinking will discover in Part III that another dramatic leap is possible by creating a lean enterprise for each of their product families that tightly links all value-creating activities from concept to product launch, from order to delivery, and from raw materials into the arms of the consumer. This new concept takes the best features from the American, German, and Japanese industrial traditions and recombines them in a way that can be applied to every economic activity, from long-distance travel to construction to health care.

Lean Thinking does not provide a new management "program" for the one-minute manager. Instead, it offers a new way of thinking, being, and doing for the serious manager -- one that will change the world.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting book but very dull........2007-08-27

I found this book to be interesting, but I hard trouble finishing it because the writing was so boring. Despite the dullness the book did get me thinking of product in a different way.

5 out of 5 stars Womack and Jones, very engaging........2007-08-26

Lean Thinking- A very well written account of a long study of the theory of customer driven value thinking. The elimination of waste in accomplishing customer driven trade is the main goal of this theory. The book has been tuned over a series of revisions, so it is well polished. While I am no expert on the topic, I can at least attest to the fact that the volume is well written and referenced. Their views are spread over a period of many years, giving them the benefit of tracking case study performance over the long term. Companies both large and small have been studied and tracked to determine the benefits of these theories.

4 out of 5 stars Worth Every Penny.......2007-07-30

A most readable book on an important subject of productivity. The comment on outsourcing is insightful and the emphasis on human element is so crucial. Productivity is not all about bigger and better machines but about management and employee been willing to take risks to think out of a box. Mr. Womack has made a significant contribution to the on-going dicussion of productivity in a globalized world.

5 out of 5 stars My husband loved it.......2007-04-10

My husband loved this book so much that this was actually purchased as a gift for another man in his office.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book with Detailed Lean Conversion Techniques .......2007-02-01

This book provides many case studies of companies outside of the auto industry that converted to lean production. It details the personnel changes they had to make, changes in factory layout, differences in the supply chain and much more. Where "The Machine that Changed the World" was a primer to lean production, "Lean Thinking" is more of a how-to book. Together, they make a great pair and provide a fairly in-depth view of the subject. As in, "The Machine that Changed the World", there is plenty of hard data to back up the claims that these companies improved after switching to lean thinking.

I am a college student majoring in mechanical engineering and read this book and "The Machine that Changed the World" to get a broad understanding of lean production. The two books did just that and even gave me many ideas on how to convert a student organization I am involved with (SAE) to more of a lean organization. As much as possible anyway.

4 out of 5 stars It's a start!.......2006-11-07

There is really no middle-ground when it comes to Robert Allen. You either like his work or you think that his concepts are risky and/or far-feteched. I personally like Allen's approach to real estate from a novice standpoint. I have utilized many of his techniques to success. However, I do caution, once you get momentum, go to the next level and make money on the buy and continue to educate yourself on the right way to remain in real estate for the long-term. This will mean studying markets and having a long-term and short term strategy. This will mean that traditional closings have the place and creative real estate does not equate to illegal if done the right way with the right team - and can keep you out of trouble with your accountant. This will mean knowing the true cost of money (time value, strategy for each property, situation of the Seller, your situation and access to resources, etc.)

As time progresses, I suspect that many of these practices will be regulated and closely watched. However, don't blame Allen - there are many financing structures that get sellers into becoming motivated thus these techniques are executed. Play close attention to his guidance on commecial properties, cross-collaterization, dream-teaming, and subject-to/lease option structuring - these deals are made every day.

I never had a problem with Allen and as a matter of fact consider him important to the "master of your fate" outlook. He is now more or less an information guru because like so many before and after him - real estate is the impetus for improving your financial state to (a) start the million dollar business; (b) divesify and partner into different and larger properties, and (c) meet those who exercise advanced, long-term real estate strategies that lead to successful careers.

Oh -- let it be mentioned: Robert Allen is not "breeding competition." He is well-past these stages, but is willing to share on some of his novice techniques to get you started.

Good Read - Supplement it and Educate Yourself and you all will be well if the focus and desire is there. If not: Continue to blame Allen for trying to share pearls of wisdom at a modest cost.

3 out of 5 stars Getting Started in Real Estate.......2006-09-20

This was an all around decent book for someone desiring to get started in the real estate business. It has 30 short chapters focusing on getting into the real estate business with no money. One of which is called tapping the equity in your home. Nothing really new there. The book contains some good concepts but a lot was just common sense. If you haven't bought real estate before and don't no much about financing then this will open up your eyes to some concepts that you may not have thought of before. There is a chapter on why you should own property. One on negotiations, one on using partners and another on overcoming roadblocks to your success. There is also a chapter on how to retire in 5 years. All in about 280 pages that will go by quick.

I think the most important thing that one could recieve from this book is that anyone can do it. It doesn't take a masters degree in economics to do this stuff. I think this book can give the reader a good basic understanding of how real estate and rental property works so they too can get involved. Just remember that positive cash flow is a must!

4 out of 5 stars Stuff.......2006-07-20

Some of it kinda sounds farfetched, but I guess if sellers are desperate enough it could work.

1 out of 5 stars Boycott Robert G. Allen!!!.......2006-05-20

Robert G. Allen is a notorious and relentless internet spammer. If you should happen to somehow end up on one of his email lists like I did, he will send you several junk emails a day. Unsubscribing doesn't work, and trying to block the sender's domain is useless because the emails are sent from a different domain every time. The funny part is that the emails aren't even coded properly. They always show up as just a bunch of html code. Would you really take internet money-making advice from a guy who can't even code html properly? Anyway, his spamming practices are completely illegal and it's only a matter of time before the law catches up with him. But that shouldn't come as any surprise considering that mister Allen has been in trouble with the law before. He's had several run-ins with the IRS, lawsuits against him, and a chapter 7 bankruptcy. I would also stay away from his Nothing Down real estate methods. Many of those practices are illegal, and the president of the Nothing Down club in Atlanta wound up in federal prison because of it. For more info on Allen, visit johntreed dottcomm, click on Real Estate Investing, then click Real Estate Guru Ratings. Bottom line, don't trust this guy and don't buy his books. And if you're reading this Mr. Allen, take me off your @%#&*$ mailing list!!!

1 out of 5 stars Great Scam.......2006-01-29

I was actually very impressed by the material in the book and would have undoubtly given it 5 stars. BUT something very fishy made me change my mind. I applied to enroll into the Robert Allen Instiitute mentorship program for real estate investment (details are online). I got a call from the Program and a sales person like sounding gentleman, who threw around his weight and suggested multiple times that it would be an honor for me to be chosen for the mentorship program spoke to me for an hour...And then he and his supervisor suggested that if I trusted Robert Allen, I should give him my credit card number for a charge of 6000-10000$!!!!. 'It takes money to make money' he said. When I told him that he will need to tell me how many perople are actually in the program and how many actually make money, he was caught offguard...at the end of the conversation he was frankly rude and said 'Well, think about it, all you have done in your life so far is made 80000$ a year'...I mean how unclassy can you get!!...well thank you Mr Allen and your sales-people...I sure can tell how you have made your money.

Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

5 out of 5 stars Has history been tampered with?.......2007-10-23

Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/RAZQNMXM4M9CL Has history been tampered with? Yes, it has! Did events and eras such as the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, the Roman Empire , the Dark Ages, and the Renaissance, actually occur within a very different chronology from what we've been told? Yes, they certainly did!

The history of humankind is both drastically shorter and dramatically different than generally presumed.

Why is it so? On one hand, it was usual custom to justify the claims to title and land by age and ancestry, and on the other the court historians knew only too well how to please their masters. The so called universal classic world history is a pack of intricate lies for all events prior to the 16th century. World history as we learn it today was entirely fabricated in the 16th-18th centuries. It's likely that nobody told you before, but

there is not a single piece of firm written evidence or artefact that is reliably and independently dated prior to the 11th century.

Naturally, after what you've learned in school and university, you will not easily believe that the classical history of ancient Rome, Greece, Asia, Egypt, China, Japan, India, etc., is manifestly false.

You will point accusing finger to the pyramids in Egypt, to the Coliseum in Rome and Great Wall of China etc., and claim, aren't they really ancient, thousands of years ancient? Well, there is no valid scientific proof that they are older than 1000 years!

The oldest original written document that can be reliably dated belongs to the 11th century!

New research asserts that Homo sapiens invented writing (including hieroglyphics) only 1000 years ago. Once invented, writing skills were immediately and irreversibly put to the use of ruling powers and science.

The consensual chronology we live with was essentially crafted in the 16th century by the Jesuits.

The world history was compiled from contradictory mix of innumerable copies of ancient Latin and Greek manuscripts and other irrefutable proofs delivered by late mediaeval astronomers that were cemented by the authority of writings of the Church Fathers.

Early in life, we learn about ancient history. Children love the magical lessons of history - they are like fairy tales. Teachers recite breathtaking stories; very soon We learn by heart the names and deeds of brave warriors, wise philosophers, fabulous pharaohs, cunning high priests and greedy scribes.

We learn of gigantic pyramids and sinister castles, kings and queens, dukes and barons, powerful heroes and beautiful ladies, emaciated saints and low-life traitors.

Ancient history is based documents, manuscripts, printed books, paintings, monuments and artefacts - called primary sources.

The problem is that neither these ancient documents, nor events described therein can be irrefutably dated, moreover they contradict each other for the most part.

When a school textbook tells us that Genghis Khan in year X or Alexander in year Y, have each conquered half of the world, it means only that it is so said in some of the written sources.

There are no answers to simple questions:

When were these primary sources written?

Where and by whom were these sources found?

It is wrongly presumed that ancient and medieval chronicles, written by Genghis Khan's or Alexander the Great contemporaries and eyewitnesses, are readily available. Actually, only sources written hundreds or even thousands of years after the events are there, compiled mostly in the 16th 18th centuries, or even later.

As a rule, these sources suffered considerable multiple manipulations, falsifications and distortions by editing. At the same time,

innumerable originals of ancient documents under various pretexts were destroyed in Europe under various pretexts.

The names of persons and geographical sites often changed meaning and location during the course of the centuries.

Geographical locations became clearly defined on maps only with the advent of printing.

This made possible the circulation of identical copies of the same map for purposes of the military, navigation, education and governance tasks.

Historians from Oxford say: "hey, everybody knows that Julius Caesar lived in the first century B.C.

`Julius Caesar' statement is only a point of view as

there is simply no irrefutable documentary proof that Julius Caesar or any other great name of antiquity ever existed.

Better than that - extremely rare sources that can be reliably dated back to the 10th-14th centuries A D, do not show the polished picture of classical history.

They show a picture both contradictory and confusing.

All methods of dating of ancient sources and artefacts are erroneous:

Radio-carbon C14 method produces dating with exactitude of plus minus 1500 years, therefore it is too crude for dating of events in historical timeframe!

The Almagest tractate, which lies as corner stone contemporary chronology, compiled in the 2nd century A D by Ptolemy, the founding father of astronomy, contains astronomical data of 9th to 16th century!

The Bronze Age,that has supposedly began 5000 years ago. Bronze is made of 90% copper and 10% tin, but the technology for tin extraction dates back to 14th century A D!.

All eclipses contained in manuscripts, like Thucydides one, relating 'ancient' events have exclusively medieval dating. All horoscopes cut in stone or painted in Egyptian temples, like Dendera have exclusively early medieval dating solutions.

Not quite what you have learned in school? Open your eyes, and, you will find sufficient proof to reach step by step the inevitable conclusion that the classical chronology is false and therefore, that the history of ancient and medieval world universally accepted today, is also false. Have a fresh outlook on everything said or printed about "ancient" and "enigmatic" Roman, Greek and Egyptian, medieval as well as all other "lost and found" civilizations.

Antiquity and Dark Ages are phantoms invented in the 16th 18th and polished in 19th 20thcenturies. Human civilization is in fact barely 1000 years old!

This book will change your perception of History forever!
What if Ancient Rome, Greece and Egypt were invented during Renaissance?
What if The Old Testament was a rendition of events of the Middle Ages?
What if Jesus Christ was born in 1053 and crucified in 1086 AD?
Sounds Unbelievable?

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

2 out of 5 stars Very Negative Tone.......2007-05-12

Being an investor I thought that this would be worth the read - especially after seeing the names recommending it. It didn't really offer anything new. The big secret insight to give your life back is no real secret (stop investing and basically put your money in the bank when you have enough money to live on confortably - don't keep 'playing the game' forever) and it certainly didn't shake up the way I invest and don't worry, Wall Street won't be rocked either. Overall it carried a very negative tone in my opinion.

I ended up flicking through the last pages and then just put it in the bin. There are better investment reads out there.

1 out of 5 stars This book is an infomercial for fund of funds.......2007-05-10

I was expecting a discussion of diversification such as option strategies, long-short poistions and other hedging techniques backed up by well explained math. This book is none of that. In fact I can save you all the price of the book with this summary: big losses are bad, the market has big down periods, hedging is good but you give up some upside to reduce your down exposure, Warren Buffet is not just a buy and hold investor, he moves in and out but you are probably not as good as he is, therefore invest in a fund of hedge funds and you will get a more consistent return without the large downside. BRILLANT!!! Oh by the way, in case you decide to take his advice and invest in a fund of funds, the author happens to run one. His other points include: day trading is a fools game, if you are rich you should enjoy life and not waste time on investing your own money etc. There is absolutely nothing new in this book. There is however a good due diligence out line for investing in hedge funds in the appendix.

If you are a serious investor that is looking for real insight into diversification theory and ways to do it, THIS IS NOT YOUR BOOK

3 out of 5 stars Helpful financial philosophy, but not enough practical detail about hedging techniques.......2007-04-19

Hi Everyone,

I really enjoyed reading about Mr. Marks investing philosophy. In particular, I liked how he defines the "end game", his attention to risk management, and how he stresses the importance of managing time wisely.

Unfortunately, I thought that information regarding the practical details about hedging techniques was sorely lacking. I think the hedging techniques of individual hedge funds and their effects on portfolio performance should have been explored. For instance, although he mentions Dr. John Hussman in a reference to economists, Mr. Marks fails to mention that Dr. Hussman manages SEC accredited hedged equity and bond mutual funds that are accessible to even average net worth investors (see http://www.hussmanfunds.com/ for more info). I would have very much liked to see a statistical analysis of how funds like Dr. Hussman's might allow hedging of the standard (and in my opinion risky) portfolio that Mr. Marks recommends for average net worth investors.

R. Harazin

P.S. Disclosure -- I own shares of Dr. Hussman's hedged equity fund (HSGFX).

1 out of 5 stars very fragmented review of investment priciples.......2007-04-17

Since there are many positive reviews this book must appeal to some people, to me it seems like a very fragmented approach and re-hash of a lot of well known investment fundamentals. It also obviously is touting hedge funds. It is also talking up fund of funds, which in the case of hedge funds puts the fees into pretty astronomical territory. I generally enjoy John Mauldin and his column, but for Mauldin to recommend this book is somewhat suspect. Serious investors can find better books than this.

5 out of 5 stars The best financial advice you will ever receive.......2007-08-23

I read this book 8 months ago. It was such an eye-opener that I went on to read ten other investment books over the ensuing 6 months. Although several other books cover much of the same material, Swedroe's book is the one that I have read and re-read several times. It really can stand alone as your "only guide to investing". Two of my relatives have read it now, as well. I now manage all of my investments myself, with confidence. Short term market drops don't worry me at all. I truly believe that anyone who reads this book and later reads Swedroe's bond book(by about the same title) will be well-armed to manage their investments without the expense of a broker or advisor.

5 out of 5 stars Great Investment Book!.......2007-05-22

I've just finished reading your book and wanted to thank you so much for sharing this straight forward method of investing with all of us!! I've been investing for many years. I've tried timing the market, newsletter services, timing services; just about ever known method to not make money. After reading your book, it really seemed to 'click' for me.

I've been suggesting this book to many of my friends. They seem to want exactly what your strategy provides, reasonable returns with reduced risk. I wish I had found this book many years ago.

5 out of 5 stars A tool box that does the job..............2007-05-09

This was an excellent book that covered all the necessary fundamentals without going into the excessive esoterica of the field that I, as a simple investor, did not need.

It also provided useful formulas and guidance for fixed security investments based on the different scenarios that different investors might have.

The book has definite views on total bond market funds as well as mortgage backed securities that you are not likely to find elsewhere and that every investor must necessarily know before investing.

The title really says it all.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2007-05-09

One of 4 o5 of the best investment books I've read. Every investor should read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Winning strategy? Yes!.......2007-05-08

Late summer of 2005 I decided to turn our investments over to a financial advisor. My wife questioned whether it made sense to give such a huge cut (2% of market value each year) to a brokerage firm. That weekend we went to Barnes and Noble and I bought this book. The rest is history. I am in index funds and short term bonds. I am 60/40 domestic/foreign. My return has been great but the most important thing is that I sleep well at night. I rebalance when the numbers get out of whack not because of some hunch or fear. I sold everything that I owned to get into this strategy and paid a large amount of tax but it has all been worthwhile. This strategy forces you to take profits when stocks rise and buy stocks when prices go down. It makes sense and it works.

4 out of 5 stars Digestible Approachable Truths.......2007-05-13

I've read many books by Jim Rohn and every last one has been an excellent inspirational read. This one is no different.

There are fundamental truths that stand as unchanging foundations for success concerning human achievement. Since the beginning of time there have been men who've mastered and accepted these principles and have gone on to accomplish thier most creative visions due to the application of those principles and thier overwhelming desire to succeed. Authors have captured and written down these truths from the beginning of time-even in books such as the bible. Every approach to learning these secrets have been different due to the mindset of each generation.

Jim Rohn uncovers these priciples and sheds light on them in a simplistically refreshing way that allows for motivation towards articulating and aligning ones desires toward a worthwhile destiny. I think Jim Rohn once again does an excellent job at capturing the secret and translating it into understandable text for our consumption. I would recommend this book to anyone with an open mind willing enough to search themselves and uncover thier untapped potential.

5 out of 5 stars Jim Rohn is a blooming genius!.......2006-03-14

I have read so many self-help books that are okay and even good, but they're all just pep-talks. This little book is absolutely riveting! After 6 pages, I was shocked, blown away, and had to stop reading and walk around to digest the simplicity and truthfulness of Mr. Rohn's ideas. This is not just another pep-talk. This book tells EXACTLY what to do to acheive your goals; broken all the way down to blocks on graph paper. If you never read another self-help book, read this one.

4 out of 5 stars The Master Business Philosopher.......2006-01-13

Anthony Robbins acknowledges Jim Rohn as one of his mentors besides John Grinder (Co-developer of NLP). The essence of his training is discipline, goal setting and taking action (So do the exercises in the book!).

This book is a great read in conjunction with "You Were Born Rich" by Bob Proctor, and "Think & Grow Rich" by Napoleon Hill. Rohn's books are also highly recommended by MLM Leaders from Herbalife as he's a regular trainer with them.

Forget Regis Philbin's Who Wants to be a Millionaire. Martin Fridson's How to Be a Billionaire sets its sights much higher, and therefore seems an even more appropriate (if somewhat less realistic) goal for today's tycoon wannabes. There are some 200 individuals in the U.S. alone who now breathe this rarefied air, writes Merrill Lynch managing director Fridson, and no reason why those who adopt their philosophies cannot join them. To that end, he studied more than a dozen of the self-made super-rich, including Sam Walton, Bill Gates, Wayne Huizenga, and Warren Buffett. He then synthesized their techniques for success into nine strategies: take monumental risks, do business in new ways, dominate your market, consolidate an industry, buy low, thrive on deals, outmanage the competition, invest in political influence, and resist unions. Dividing profiles of these high fliers into chapters focused on their prevailing principles, he shows how each played a critical role in the growth of an empire. Walton didn't invent discounting, for example; he tweaked existing practices for the late-20th-century marketplace. Likewise, Huizenga didn't start individual companies but integrated existing competitors into powerhouse organizations. While Billionaire may not be a true self-help manual, it does offer a fascinating glimpse at tactics used by those who've played the game and won. --Howard Rothman

Book Description

"A truly enlightening work filled with fundamental strategies that have worked for others.Martin Fridson documents the essential principles inherent in every billionaire's success."

-Gordon Bethune
Chairman of the Board and CEO
Continental Airlines

Self-made billionaires all have one thing in common: they excel at making money. But hard work, thrift, and focus are only part of the story-you hold the rest of it in your hands. How to Be a Billionaire is the first comprehensive picture of the real strategies and tactics that built the great business fortunes of modern times. Packed with engaging accounts of titans like Ross Perot, Richard Branson, Phil Anschutz, John D. Rockefeller, Wayne Huizenga, Bill Gates, J. Paul Getty, and Kirk Kerkorian, How to Be a Billionaire will show you principles that can increase your wealth and business acumen to the mogul level.

How to Be a Billionaire looks at the careers, the methods, and the minds of self-made billionaires to distill the common keys to titanic accumulations of wealth. Each chapter explores a specific strategy and brings it to life through extended profiles of past and present masters of the art of making money.

Do you think innovation is the best way to prosper in business? Sam Walton, founder of the Wal-Mart retail chain, would tell you otherwise. The key to Walton's success was supreme devotion to copying the methods of other successful discounters.

What could be less complicated than buying low and selling high? But the ascent of

Warren Buffett, John Kluge, and Laurence Tisch to billionaire status depended on much more than an eye for good bargains. And if you're looking to thrive by outmanaging the competition, look no further than Richard Branson. When the founder of Virgin Atlantic needed to reduce his staff by 400 people, 600 volunteered to take off a few months on sabbatical.

How to Be a Billionaire identifies the methods, beliefs, and behaviors every businessperson must understand and emulate to reach the pinnacle of riches. A manual for success that can benefit every aspiring tycoon, it is a fascinating read for anyone intrigued by wealth and how it's gotten.

Praise for HOW TO BE A BILLIONAIRE

"How to Be a Billionaire offers fascinating insight into the subject of building wealth. As a result of his exhaustive research, Martin Fridson is able to explain the wealth-creation process from a unique perspective. As the reader will discover, there is no single formula for success, but there are certain categories into which these concepts can be placed. My personal advice is to remember the words of Winston Churchill who said, 'Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm.'"

-Ross Perot

"Martin Fridson has created the ultimate roadmap to the American Dream. He comes as close to extracting a formula for the acquisition of wealth as any book I have ever read."

-Jeff Sagansky
CEO, Paxson Communications

"Martin Fridson's book has a number of very insightful and thoughtful analyses, something you don't pick up in many business schools."

-Philip F. Anschutz
Chairman and CEO, The Anschutz Corporation

"How to Be a Billionaire is a powerful arsenal of dead-on strategies for increasing your personal wealth and business acumen. Marty Fridson details the tactics of self-made billionaires with great intelligence and insight. I wish this book had been available when I was starting my career."

1 out of 5 stars Not for everyone..........2007-01-28

I was quite amused how some locals bought the book hoping the author's would enlight them with something realistic. The book is not for the general public and most of the solutions are basic financial management. I didn't bother buying the book since it was available at my local library. For those wanting inspiration to make a business, go for it and read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional addition to any business library..........2006-12-07

I came across this book at my local library and after reading it, brought a copy and been re-reading it for the last year. With Napoleon Hill's Think and Grow Rich, it is my blueprint to my personal goals of amassing one billions dollars.

Though much of the information is pretty tough to understand at first, with much persistence and open-mindedness, this book has motivated me more than ever with every page I turn.

What can I say? Get the book and see for yourself.

Definitely worth more than its flashy gold cover.

5 out of 5 stars That's Right - Shoot for Billion with a "B".......2006-05-11

This book, more than any other book on creating wealth, spells it out. If you want a get rich quick plan - sorry - this book is about the slow and steady! Can you say Tortoise and the Hare? Just like everyone else, I was taught to get a good education, get a job and live happily ever after until reaching retirement - get my gold watch and the company will take care of me. Hah! The truth is, the old ways don't work. The people who are profiled in this book were all successful in their own way.

I believe that if you model yourself after a successful person you will be successful. That's not new. What's new is to follow in the footsteps of one of these giants and success will be yours!

5 out of 5 stars Great read - well worth your time!.......2006-04-16

This is a terrific book & I highly recommend it to aspiring business moguls of all ages. Though the title and the cover are a tad "over the top," the substance delivers. This is a thorough analysis of some of the more common strategies used in achieving great riches. Throughout the book, the author introduces us to a dozen or so most accomplished businessmen in history. Specifically, we learn of what is it that they actually did that helped them achieve great success in - arguably - the most competitive field of human endeavors - accumulating great wealth. The book is well balanced as business strategy descriptions seamlessly intertwine with historical and biographical insights. Martin Frdson, a terrific writer, is one of the very few people who could pull it off. A bit of context here is in order: Martin Fridson is a very accomplished guy. With an undergrad in history and an MBA (both from Harvard), he gives the reader a unique vantage point on combining both history and business strategy. Specifically, Mr. Fridson is one of the biggest authorities in the field of high-yield bonds (a.k.a. junk bonds) - and has been for a long time. High-yield world is often a treacherous mine-field dominated by marginal companies with weak balance sheets. Stories of great deals and disastrous failures are abound. Mr Fridson has seen many fortunes both created and lost and he brings this balanced perspective to the readers of this great book.

5 out of 5 stars The bedside book for every moneymaker and aspiring billionaire!.......2006-03-09

This book is the ultimate guide to moneymaking! If you wanna be a huge player, this book is for you! The author, mister Fridson was doing a wonderful job by exposing the strategies employed by the best teachers you can have, the billionaires themselves. Their way of life, their way of thinking, the way they make deal. The hard way!

How to be a billionaire is the perfect tool if you want to emulates the titans of wealth. As you can see in my others reviews. I'm a self-taugh business student and a fan of those "How to be rich" book. And I've never seen a book as valuable as this book. And I never heard of something as useful and inspirational for any accumulator of wealth.

Some passages of this book are long and boring, but nothing is pointless. Every single line of this book are of worthy academic value in your quest of being superrich.

Before receiving this book, being billionaire was somewhat out of reach. But now, I'm fully loaded and inspirated by the strategies from the titans of wealth. I love to go to the extreme and I know everything is possible if you really want it.

So how bad do you want it?

The higher you aim, the bigger your gains!

Book Description

This is the first book of its kind to address the topic of money management for individual traders and to present a comprehensive, detailed plan for implementation. It explains how to create a management program that addresses the emotional aspects of trading, presents an offensive and defensive portfolio allocation strategy, defines risk and shows the reader how to identify risk tolerance. It offers hands-on advice on selecting screen trades using fundamental and technical analysis and shows how to work with an "anatomy of trade."

4 out of 5 stars You Not Only Trade the Plan, you Learn to Plan.......2004-03-04

Deel teaches you, from an insider's mind (he used to work the Floor), how to trade the markets.

He teaches technical analysis and he doesn't stay clear of fundamental analysis although he stresses the technical side of things.

It is his view that all the information is in the price. It is.

But he goes on to teach that in spite of the price being the ONLY thing that matters in knowing where to place your investment money, he also explains that every stock does exactly what it's supposed to do... just not exactly WHEN it's supposed to do it. Therefore, your plan has GOT to make room for contingencies. I appreciate how he stresses stop losses. I know of many (poor) investors who heard the lie, "Don't place stops or the specialists will take you out!"

If you're brand new to the market, I'd get a VERY intro book on investing first, and then I'd read/devour this text. It's not an advanced book but if you've never bought or sold a stock, it will confuse you. You don't need much experience though to make this work for you.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2002-11-12

I was disappointed by trading title. The large text (12 or 14 type font) and small size should have been warning signs.

While the book definitely imparts important information every trader or investor should know, the advice is very simplistic. For example, chapter one explains that we should "buy low and sell high" or that we must be emotionally prepared for losses and gains. One rule he gives could be dangerous if incorrectly applied, and this involves selling too early. The author says that selling too early does not cause you a loss, after all. However, this could be hazardous to a trend following system which depends on a few large gainers. If those few large gainers are sold early, they will never develop into large gainers and offset the many losses. In short, and as other trading experts have noted, one CAN broke taking profits early because this may avoid the big gainers - unless your system is one which is more dependent on the frequency of winners than the size of those winners (e.g. a day trading system).

The text is very introductory and should be for the introductory trader.

5 out of 5 stars Basic, but effective.......2001-12-08

This book is a paradox. How can just a few simple concepts explained in a somewhat shallow way be 'enough'?

Well, i've read books on money management that go too far on systems and techniques that aren't that easy to grasp or implement. This book by Mr. Deel goes a long way on showing you ways to complement your trading system with just a few rules that will keep you alive for many losing trades in a row, if such a tragic situation ever occur. So, don't waste too much time on making a buying decision. This book is for you. If you're into mathematics, this one will leave you wanting. If you just want a simple and effective way to complement a trading system so that you'll be right there for that next trade with enough tradind capital, than this is it.

If you trade futures only, look elsewhere...

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic, Well Written, In-depth Information.......2000-03-30

I can't believe the insite of the author and useful information which this book covers. This book makes you think about what you are doing and how important risk management is to your trading plan. The book delivers a clear well written and versatile approach to developing a winning trading plan.

I have been trading for 15 years and very few books are as on the mark as this one. The author takes very complex information and explains it in a concise and crystal clear explanation.

I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to trade or invest. WOW!

2 out of 5 stars OK as an introduction, not useful for the experienced trader.......1999-12-27

This text quickly covers a large variety of topics in shallow detail. If you need to be told that you should cut your losses and let your winners run, then this is your book. If you want a text that will help you find winners (or the losers you are supposed to avoid in the first place) you best look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for a "bonds 101".......2007-06-08

Great first book to learn about bonds and similar financial products... what they should and should not be used for, what to buy for what, and what not to buy, and of course, the soundest advice that you should get a professional to review your individual situation to find the best strategy to preserve capital.

5 out of 5 stars A classic book on investing.......2007-02-17

Like all of Larry's books this one is a gem. You will never find an author as skilled in explaining difficult subjects as Larry can. One would think he was simply a skilled language mechanic. Not so Larry is a skill investor too. He has written several book on investing and I have and read them all. For many years I was a bond investor and thought I had mastered the subject, Wrong I learned much from his book and you will too. Larry believes in passive investing tecgniques. Books on the subject are a little too complex for the average investor. I can offer a solution to this problem. I want to recommend for you a book titled How to Make Money in the Stock Market-Buy 2,500 different stocks for $1000 - Pay no Commission This book is a must for those wanting to find out about indexing (passive investing) and why it is the superior method for the small investor (and big one too). This book is an outstanding guide to personal investing. It will be useful to all investors from novices to highly the highly experienced. This book prepares the reader to approach investing from the standpoint of the underlying science. It is the antithesis of a 'get rich quick scheme'.

All aspects of Modern Portfolio Theory and passive (index) investing are explained in a through and easily understood manner. The aspect I like most is that as well as a solid theoretical foundation the book is very practical and shows the reader how to create (and more importantly) and manage over time a successful portfolio. This is a great book- for the beginning investor, it's a great place to start and for the experienced investor there are many valuable suggestions.

It's a shame to think of how much money investors have lost "investing" in the stock market over the years. I wish I had read this little book years ago. The chapter on automatic investing recommends a number of portfolios that follow modern portfolio theory and adjust risk as you age without any effort on the part of the reader at all. Had this book been written years ago and had I followed its directions I would be rich today of that I am certain. Nevertheless I will pursue one of the portfolios recommended and stick to my chosen asset plan.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read For Every Investor.......2006-11-15

Larry Swedroe and Joseph Hempen explain the misunderstood asset class of fixed income most clearly and advise the implementation of bonds into your investment portfolio in accordance with your objectives. Clearly and concisely, the authors tell you the pros and cons of various security types and familiarize you with "bondspeak", the insider language of the bond market. Read and digest this book. Then you'll know what to do with fixed income securities in your investment strategy just like a pro.

4 out of 5 stars Good book for basic fixed income investing.......2006-11-13

This is a must read for anyone who wants to know about bonds and fixed income investing in general.

I wish I had read this earlier but that happens with most of us. I am glad that I ordered this now and have almost finished it reading.

3 out of 5 stars Too many words.......2006-11-10

There is some useful information for the average investment duffer. But the information to word ratio is way too small. Swedroe is a smart guy. His prolixity problem doesn't even approach that of David Swenson---a small consolation for the reader. Next time he should hire a ghost writer.
