Many Americans have wondered why prescription drugs have become so expensive while advertising for those drugs seems to grow exponentially. Former New England Journal of Medicine Editor Marcia Angell has some answers. The pharmaceutical industry, according to Angell, is fraught with corruption and doing a disservice to customers, the federal government, and to the medical establishment itself. In The Truth About the Drug Companies, Angell explains how a huge portion of the revenue generated by "Big Pharma" goes not into research and development but into aggressive marketing campaigns to sell their product. She describes how, even though the drug companies claim that it costs them an average of 802 million dollars per drug to develop new medicines, that figure is obscenely inflated since it factors in marketing as well as expected interest the company would have received had they invested the money in the open market. Meanwhile, Angell says, most of the R & D work is done by colleges and universities funded by the government. There are also problems with the drugs themselves, Angell indicates, since a majority are "me-too drugs", slightly modified versions of existing products which meant to address concerns of consumers most likely to spend money on pharmaceuticals. Thus, the market is filled with remarkably similar drugs to treat depression and high cholesterol while potentially life-saving medicines for diseases afflicting third-world countries are discontinued because they aren't profitable. In the books most damning passage, Angell tells of the high-priced junkets offered to doctors, ostensibly offered as educational opportunities that seem to constitute little more than bribes. The prognosis for reform is a grim one, Angell indicates, due to the massive cash reserves and lobbying efforts of "Big Pharma." Indeed, that lobby was hard at work trying to discredit her claims immediately upon the book's publication. But for anyone who's paid a pharmacy bill, The Truth About the Drug Companies is a fascinating read. --John Moe

Book Description

During her two decades at The New England Journal of Medicine, Dr. Marcia Angell had a front-row seat on the appalling spectacle of the pharmaceutical industry. She watched drug companies stray from their original mission of discovering and manufacturing useful drugs and instead become vast marketing machines with unprecedented control over their own fortunes. She saw them gain nearly limitless influence over medical research, education, and how doctors do their jobs. She sympathized as the American public, particularly the elderly, struggled and increasingly failed to meet spiraling prescription drug prices. Now, in this bold, hard-hitting new book, Dr. Angell exposes the shocking truth of what the pharmaceutical industry has become–and argues for essential, long-overdue change.

Currently Americans spend a staggering $200 billion each year on prescription drugs. As Dr. Angell powerfully demonstrates, claims that high drug prices are necessary to fund research and development are unfounded: The truth is that drug companies funnel the bulk of their resources into the marketing of products of dubious benefit. Meanwhile, as profits soar, the companies brazenly use their wealth and power to push their agenda through Congress, the FDA, and academic medical centers.

Zeroing in on hugely successful drugs like AZT (the first drug to treat HIV/AIDS), Taxol (the best-selling cancer drug in history), and the blockbuster allergy drug Claritin, Dr. Angell demonstrates exactly how new products are brought to market. Drug companies, she shows, routinely rely on publicly funded institutions for their basic research; they rig clinical trials to make their products look better than they are; and they use their legions of lawyers to stretch out government-granted exclusive marketing rights for years. They also flood the market with copycat drugs that cost a lot more than the drugs they mimic but are no more effective.

The American pharmaceutical industry needs to be saved, mainly from itself, and Dr. Angell proposes a program of vital reforms, which includes restoring impartiality to clinical research and severing the ties between drug companies and medical education. Written with fierce passion and substantiated with in-depth research, The Truth About the Drug Companies is a searing indictment of an industry that has spun out of control.

The media in general and the medical industry in particular do not want you (patient) to read and be informed about what you are being prescribed and the consequences. They also are dealing with symptoms instead of causes. Prevention is not in the medical dictionary terminology. Drugs do not heal! Drugs should be a short term interrupter and not a progression from one prescription to another and another. Pharmaceutical companies are gaining more political power through Federal legislation of Congress, which results show in company coffers. Read and be informed.

This excellent book which shines a bright spotlight on the industry. This is an industry which (mostly due to its actions) is ready to implode, and I fear that it may take us physicians right along with them.

The message is clearly spelled out in the first few chapters.American consumers need to be aware of how we are being ripped off by the drug industies. This is a must read and extremely well written

At the same time people are dying from this disease, and that, Big Pharma maintains it's strangle hold on research in our Medical Schools, and the treatment of diseases. Why the Diabetes industry alone worldwide is a 4 billion dollar a day industry. Not to mention herpes, asthma, AIDS, cancer, and the like. The afore mentioned diorders are said to be incureable. Why? Well when research is geared to profit, and not a cure, one begins to understand why. No cures unless there is a profit to be made. So what if people die, it controls the population.

It has been more than 100 years or more since a real cure for a specific disease was discovered. There is more of a profit in making a crutch, than an actual cure. Because once that disease is cured there is then very little money to be made. We have diseases hanging around forever, and when they say there is no cure, they mean we have not made enough money from this disease. In short there is no profit in a cure. Profit is of main concern here. Not you or your family.

Ms. Angell has a blueprint or an inside look at the process of the how and why things are the way they are. Money, money, money. The Love of money is the root of all evil. Money before people. This book is an eye opener, and like the people who rang the bell before 9/11, if no one listens, no good can come from this book. Ms. Angell is giving us a look from the point of view of a former insider, and very well bares listening to. Read this book and become pro-active about the healthcare of you and your family.

This a an attck on big pharma and a well rounded one at that. In the end Angell proposes a plan to lessen the power of the pharma companies.

Enter the unforgettable world of New York Times bestselling author Stephanie Laurens, creator of the phenomenal Cynster family. This amazing clan -- and their friends -- is a bold, powerful group of men who let nothing stand in their way when it comes to matters of the heart. And in this, Stephanie Laurens's newest novel, a passionate man and a daring woman confront the ultimate question. . . .

What Price Love?

There is nothing more fascinating than a darkly handsome rake, especially one as controlled and elusive as Dillon Caxton, protégé of Demon Cynster. Despite his dangerous air, Dillon is a man of sterling reputation, but it wasn't always so. Years ago, an illicit scheme turned into a nefarious swindle, and only the help of his cousin, Felicity, and her husband, Demon, saved Dillon from ruin. Now impeccably honest, he guards his hard-won reputation and is the Keeper of the Register of all racing horses in England. His standing and aloofness make Dillon undeniably desirable to young ladies, but despite all the lures thrown his way, he remains uninterested -- his attention unfixed.

Until ""Miss Priscilla Dalling"" erupts into his life. A stunning beauty, she affects Dillon as no other ever has, but what fascinates him even more is that this tempting young lady is clearly desperate, and equally clearly lying about wanting to see the Register to fulfill the whim of an eccentric aunt.

Lady Priscilla Dalloway will do anything to see what's in the Register -- even lie! Her twin brother, Russell, who had fought with their father and left the family home to work with the finest racehorses, has disappeared. Pris knows that clues to his whereabouts can be found in the tome Dillon Caxton refuses to let her see.

She unleashes her feminine wiles on Dillon -- to no avail. But Dillon is now determined to learn the truth behind her quest. Exploiting the powerful attraction that flares between them, he succeeds in convincing Pris to tell him all, to trust him with her twin's life. Together, Dillon and Pris locate Rus, only to discover that his life is being threatened by the perpetrators of a massive betting swindle.

The time is ripe for Dillon to repay old debts by helping another as he himself was helped. Assisted by Demon, Felicity, and Barnaby Adair, Dillon and Pris embark on a journey riddled with danger -- and undeniable passion -- as they seek to overturn the swindle and expose Rus's deadly enemies. And along the way they discover the answer to that age-old question: What price love?

1 out of 5 stars TERRIBLE.......2007-06-29

This is the first book that I actually returned. I could not get past the boring racing setup and the fact that these two conceited people only have eyes for each other...because they are both so very beautiful. I couldnt get past the first chapter. Yuk!

1 out of 5 stars What Price Love? Do negative integers count?.......2007-06-12

I was rather surprised by the reviewers who stated they didn't care for the horse racing aspect of this book. I found that angle to be blessed relief from the overly-narcissitic protagonists Priscilla and Dillon.

Barely 1/4 of the way into the book we read Priscilla's thought: "The last thing I need is to grow infatuated with a damned Englishman, especially one who's more handsome than I am." But long before this page the reader is treated to a number of other examples of how poor Pris and Dillon are burdened by their extraordinary good looks. Was Ms. Laurens trying to garner sympathy for these folks or just give the reader a good laugh? (Neither worked for me.)

It feels as though Ms. Laurens decided to throw some not very interesting people together within a lackluster plot and then, as if to make up for the former, added some well-researched horse racing information. The result is a very odd combination.

I put this book in the "donate" pile before I even finished chapter six. I have enjoyed other books by Ms. Laurens but this one just wasn't worth my time.

1 out of 5 stars 300 pages too long!.......2007-05-23

This is the first book I haven't read through to the end. I kept putting it down until I just read the middle of what was left and the end. Too much equine racing info and too much sex. The first time they had sex was about a third into the book. What happened w/ the anticipation? w/ the going crazy from wanting to have and not getting... Agh, this book was so boring and dissapointing...

5 out of 5 stars Another can't put down EXCELLENT read !.......2007-03-28

I Have never been disappointed with anything Stephanie Laurens, writes. She is one of my favorite authors.
I love reading the Cynster novels and their adventures .
I cannot wait for the next book !

1 out of 5 stars Are you kidding?.......2007-03-22

Poor poor Pris and Dillon - they are bogged down by the weight of their own extraordinary beauty and their "wild and reckless" -- someone should actually count just how many times that phrase appears in the book -- natures. The entire population of England AND Ireland wants them and they are excessively bored by it all...until they meet each other, that is. At last, they've each found something stimulating, but the trade-off is that WE are the ones who have to be bored for the rest of the novel. There's a convoluted and stupid subplot about horse racing featuring a mysterious supervillain who doesn't actually make an appearance until the last fifty pages, just in time for him to threaten the well-being of our dramatically alluring heroine so our hero can save her. And, not to give it away or anything, but save her he does, although by that point you'll probably be wishing he'd been a fraction too late in your haste to be rid of these characters and their cliche psychoses.

Skip it.

Book Description

Pastor Rick Warren's The Purpose-Driven Life has been both a commercially successful best seller and a widely influential book in the Christian community. As a rejoinder to the fundamentalist assumptions of Warren's book, Robert Price, a biblical scholar, a member of the Jesus Seminar, and a former liberal Baptist pastor, offers this witty, thoughtful, and detailed critique. Following the concise forty-chapter structure of Warren's book, Price's point-counterpoint approach emphasizes the importance of reason in understanding life's realities as opposed to Warren's devotional perspective. Price, who was once a born-again Christian in his youth, is in a unique position to offer an appreciation of the wisdom that Warren shares while at the same time challenging many of his main points. In particular, Price takes issue with Warren's use of numerous scriptural quotations, demonstrating how many of them have little to do with the points Warren is trying to make. An important section of the book shows that the popular evangelical notion of "a personal relationship with Jesus Christ" is utterly without any scriptural basis. Besides criticism, Price also provides many persuasive arguments for the use of reason as a tool for developing moral maturity and an intelligent, realistic perspective on life's highs and lows. Ultimately, the reason-driven life offers a healthier, alternative approach to wisdom and motivation, says Price, than the simplistic answers and feel-good emotionalism at the heart of Warren's prescription for life.

5 out of 5 stars A well reasoned response........2007-08-24

I will admit I came to this book already in agreement with much of what the author had to say. I have listened to the Bible Geek podcast by Dr. Price. The presentation was one of limited rancor and well reasoned. I have already recommended this book to some teenagers who had received "The purpose drive life" as a birthday gift.

5 out of 5 stars Is it OK not to be a religious whacko?.......2007-08-14

This book really answers the question: "Is it OK not to be a religious whacko". The multitudes of people that have inherited going to church from their parents can break with clear conscience the habit. No longer do you have to sit in church, or feel guilty about skipping, when you are only there to pacify someone else's expectations.

It is the semi-religious moderates that facilitate the whackos. Their kinda-faith creates the space for the nutcase to hide from closer scrutiny. This book is the key to setting the masses of semi-religious moderates free, and also what will expose the fundamentalist whackos for what they really are.

The world is going to be a better place for everyone, and this book will be part of the reason why. Read it!

1 out of 5 stars The No Reason Life.......2007-05-18

I must admit when I picked up this book, I did not read anything about it. I usually read reviews and such from your readers. I don't go by the advice entirely as I do read many unusual books that many people would not be interested in.

When I picked this book up it was because the cover looked very much like the book Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren which was a very good book that I have given as a gift several times. I do think this is exactly what Robert Price had in mind to help him sell his book. Right from the start I knew this was not a book I would put my time into because I do believe the Bible is The Word of God. Here is a quote from this book that will I think say all that is necessary...."Let me explain the two other factors I mentioned that cast severe doubt on Warren's approach. My second ground for hesitation is that one can by no means take for granted that any particular book, much less the Protestant Bible, is a set of truths revealed by God. Few will deny (certainly I will not) that the Bible is a repository of ageless wisdom. But that is a very different thing from making the Bible as a whole and in every part a communication of propositions from God........."

I think this says enough and you only have to go to page 26 four pages into the book.

1 out of 5 stars An Entirely Different Animal.......2007-04-27

I just picked this up at the library. I am neither a fundamentalist nor an evangelical, nor have I read Rich Warren's book.

The thing that gets me is that these people (the author and endorsers) associate themselves with Christianity, while they are really preaching atheistic secular humanism. It strikes me that the appropriate label for them from the scriptures would be "wolves in sheep's clothing" and "... in the tradition of the antichrist".

5 out of 5 stars Clarifying.......2007-04-01

This wonderful book presents a clarifying overview of the weaknesses of the fundamentalist view of life. Price touches on many major religious and philosophical concepts. His stance is respectful of religion, though probably not so much toward Pastor Warren. In my opinion, this book is an excellent read for the sincere seeker.

4 out of 5 stars A Horrible Book for Horrible People (I guess that means I'm horrible).......2006-09-18

Okay, the title pretty much sums up this review in a way. Most of the questions are truly horrific. Take this one:

$1,000,000: Dig up the grave site and such the marrow out of one of the dead person's bones. (Smith or Doe must witness the sucking and confirm the bone is empty -- only then will the money be wired into your account)

I wouldn't do it for $10 million. Yet 8% of the respondents did, indeed, say yes. There's only one question in the book that NOBODY said yes to. Just one. Imagine it, for I won't spoil it here. There are some with SHOCKINGLY high percentages (well above 80%) and some of the jot of this book comes from actually seeing what people will do for a buck (or million).

It's a great mental exercise book and you can learn a great deal about your friends. In fact, more than you'd like to know.

4 out of 5 stars Fun book to bring out at Parties!.......2006-09-09

I like this book a lot. Warning: they REALLY are horrible questions!! Its lots of fun though. Bring this out at parties, or when you have some friends over and i guarantee it will be a hit!

4 out of 5 stars How twisted are you?.......2006-08-02

If you are into dark comedy and the macabre, appreciate twisted, foul humor sometimes considered obscene (along the lines of South Park, George Carlin, Drawn Together, Wonder Showzen, Howard Stern and others), you'll probably have fun pondering some of these hypothetical questions disguised as moral dilemmas.
Yes, there is something for everyone, levels of depravity that surely will tickle any individual's icky bone, no matter their "thing." Some may need to look away from certain pages not wanting to see sentences whose outcomes are too gross to even comprehend.
It's like "Would You Rather" for an underground freak society.
But how many times can you read a question and think over possibilities that'll never happen before it's passe'?
Maybe a couple times at a few gatherings, max, then it's old.
Good for some gross-outs and guffaws, then sell it to someone else.

1 out of 5 stars The Horrible book of horrible questions.......2006-07-06

I was rather dissapointed with this book. While parts in it were funny, there wasn't very many. I don't advise you to waste your money on it. If you know someone that has it, I suggest you borrow it from them, or your library if it has it. Some questions will make you cringe, while others (most) will just make you wish you hadn't bought the book.

5 out of 5 stars This book is for everyone...except the week minded with ...........2005-09-05

This book is for everyone except the weak-minded who also have weak stomachs. As for the stong-minded with weak stomachs or vice versa, it's hard to say. However, I think it's great. It has all kind of really hard decisions that range from simple dilimas to really tough pretty much lose lose ones. If you like talking about crazy scenarios and choices (as do I and my friends: you know who you are), then you will like this book. For example, would you rather spend a little bit of money on a book that is entertaining and fun, OR would you rather spend the same amount of money on going out to a lunch considering that in the future you will forget what ever you ate days from now and you could have just eaten rice instead, while the book will last on and on and can be shared over and over. Keep thinking...

In the well-researched and compelling Standardized Minds, former journalist and economist Peter Sacks launches an exhaustive attack on the national obsession with testing--and lands a few hits. If you think you've heard every argument against standardized tests, think again. Sacks methodically picks away at our feeble attempts to measure the mind, reaching back into the history of testing with unsettling revelations about the creation of the first intelligence test and its many flaws. He deftly illustrates how the belief of inferior cultures motivated the creator of the SAT college entrance exam and takes on all that standardized testing has wrought: ability grouping, gifted programs, state accountability efforts--even the effect on parents whose perceptions of their own children are often shaken by scores on a sheet of paper.

Sacks peppers his critique with personal anecdotes and tales from testing "victims," whether they be the highly educated, well-to-do parents whose children struggle with Manhattan's preschool "baby boards" or the successful New York Times business reporter whose career-center test scores suggest he try another line of work. Once labeled a "lefty education gadfly" by the National Review, Sacks lives up to his nickname as he makes a case for replacing standardized test scores with academic portfolios that include essays, schoolwork, and more comprehensive examples of a student's performance. But his argument should give even his most conservative critics pause: Standardized Minds is a persuasive must-read for parents, educators, and lawmakers that challenges our basic assumptions about intelligence and pays homage to the talented minds we may have overlooked in our fervor to rate the human brain. --Jodi Mailander Farrell

Book Description

A hard-hitting examination of the ways in which standardized tests sustain the privileged and punish the poor, complete with a plan for meaningful change in schools and in the workplace. We've been told time and time again that standardized tests aren't perfect but that they're the best tool we have for gauging aptitude and achievement. Is this really true? What are the flaws of such testing? Why is your father's occupation a better predictor of SAT scores than virtually any other factor? And, most important, what can we do to hold one another accountable to standards at all levels of schools and in the workplace? Standardized Minds dramatically shows how our unhealthy and enduring obsession with intelligence testing affects us all, from the day we enter kindergarten to the day we apply for that corporate job. Drawing creative solutions from the headlines and the frontlines, Sacks demonstrates proven alternatives to such testing and details a plan to make the American meritocracy legitimate and fair.

5 out of 5 stars A Book for STUDENTS, who are taking these silly tests!.......2000-10-06

I am a high school senior so I am currently getting a lot of pressure from my parents to get that silly 1600 on my SAT which will take place in October and December this year. Then there's also the ACTs and the 3 SAT IIs! I was always suspicious of test prep companies, the ETS, and the SATs themselves. Living in Los Angeles, these test prep companies have grown like weeds in the community, sucking up money from middle and upper class students. Though I am fortunate, my parents have also forcefully enrolled me at one of these. My SAT school is doing a nice job with its profits and have managed to get a new paint job, redecorate the "classrooms", and to get more students and more teachers, to just get it bigger and bigger. While my "teachers" explain the concepts of the SAT, I can't help but wish I was in the library reading more books such as this or practicing the piano. It is so unfair that only the rich people can afford these classes and they are the ones who get the good scores on the SATs. After getting a mediocre score on the SAT in June, my parents have now considered me a total idiot, even though my report cards and comments from teachers say otherwise. This book is so chock-full of information that deserves wide reading. The author has done the most extensive research imaginable. The controversy of the standardized tests is something that should have been addressed and Peter Sacks is the best one to do it. He has full of statistics and information to back up everything he says, yet he never just blows them off to you, but explains them. In addition to statistics, are the personal recollections of the people he interviewed-the teachers, educators, college admissions people, and even students. The tale of one student who had 7 tries to take a silly test and not being able to graduate and forced to stay in high school was frightening to the say the least. I am also glad that the author also included a section about the infamous incident in 1998 in Massachusetts when everyone condemned the teachers that they failed "a basic reading and writing test", which had become a punch-line for many of Jay Leno's jokes that year. It was rather strange that the media did not go into detail about the exact questions or the more specifics of that exam, but everyone just wanted to call these teachers "idiots".

The book is comprehensive on all testing, with the exception of secondary school admissions tests such as the ISEE and the SSAT. Going to California private schools, I have become familiar with ERBs and the Stanford 9 tests. In order to get into private high schools, I had to take the ISEE and the SSAT. Now I have the SATs and ACTs to conquer.

This is more than a book analyzing the damaging effects of the testing culture. The author suggest an standing ovation-worthy proposal of evaluating students on what they can do, whether it is projects and more research opportunities such as outside occupational research or conducting a lab or evaluating a student 's portfolio, instead of standardized tests.

Yes, this book should be read by politicians educators, teachers, yet I am here to emphasize STUDENTS should read this book too. Students who are daunted by the SATs need to be educated about our obsessive testing culture and that they are NOT idiots for a silly number.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Resource.......2000-06-27

Too often, the high-stakes testing debate wanders into the realm smoke and mirrors. If you follow this debate, you'll find the same arguments presented here that have been presented all along: standardized tests are biased, they do not measure intelligence or knowledge, etc. What you don't normally get are the facts that back up this argument, and that is what Sacks provides. This book concretizes what has become (wrongly) a very abstract, political issue, and should be regularly referenced by all who oppose the mediocrity such testing rewards. These tests may sound good in theory, but in practice, Sacks shows with convincing success, they just don't do the job.

5 out of 5 stars Must Read For Anyone Interested In Education.......2000-04-09

I was in the middle of reading Standardized Minds when I heard a panel of "Experts" talk about the future of LA Unified School District on Which Way LA, a local radio show. Specifically they were discussing the notion of linking teacher bonus pay to the performance of their students on standardized tests. I wish Peter Sacks had been on the program as he successfully demolishes the continued folly of our reliance on standardized tests as a way to judge our schools, our teachers and our students. I wholeheartedly endorse the opinions of the previous two reviewers. Speaking as a parent, I can only say that the more people who read this book, engage in a discussion about the issues so eloquently raised within it and help push the national dialogue on education forward in the directions the author suggests, the better off our kids and we as a society will be.

5 out of 5 stars Suprebly Researched Indictment of Standardized Testing.......2000-02-27

In today's US it is almost impossible to avoid encountering standardized tests--mass-produced, multiple-choice, fill-in-the-bubble, machine-scored exams of all sorts. Standardized tests are used to assess the performance of public schools, in many systems to determine which students will be held back a grade, to decide who will get into college, and into graduate and professional school, and who will get certain jobs.

In "Standardized Minds," Peter Sacks delivers a devastating critique of the use of such tests. His indictment includes a wide range of particulars, only some of which can be summarized here.

First, standardized tests are not a source of useful information. A widely used reading test given to elementary school students can err by as much as three grade levels in measuring a student's reading level. The SAT, required for admission to most colleges, has no use other than to make predictions, with limited accuracy, of students' freshman year grades. The GRE, required for admission to most Ph.D. programs, actually has a negative correlation with future success as a scholar.

Second, standardized tests are very biased. The best known of these biases is that of the SAT against low-income, minority students. Sacks shows that this bias extends to other tests as well. Another bias identified by Sacks is that standardized tests are biased in favor of superficial thinking--the ability to rapidly recall and repeat facts--and against the deeper thinking necessary to solve complex real-world problems.

Third, and perhaps most harmfully, standardized tests promote "teaching to the test." A number of states have established what Sacks terms "high-stakes accountability" programs, in which standardized test scores determine whether students are promoted to the next grade or are allowed to graduate, and are used to rank the performance of schools. Sacks documents how such "high-stakes" programs cause teachers to spend enormous amounts of time drilling students in preparation for the tests. Such teaching practices promote rote memorization and superficial thinking at the expense of critical thinking skills and genuine understanding--hardly a desireable educational goal.

It is important to note that Sacks is not merely giving his personal opinions. He has studied and mastered a great deal of research. At the same time, his book is far more than a dry academic recital. Unlike the Dinesh D'Souzas of the world, Sacks knows the proper usage of anecdotes--to illustrate a generalzation, not as the basis for it. Of the many illuminating stories he tells, one bears repeating. St. John's University's psych department requires students entering the Ph.D. program to take the GRE, which is useless except to make somewhat accurate predictions of first-year grades. Students seeking a masters degree only, while they take the same first-year courses, are not required to take the GRE. However, if these students wish, on completing a masters degree, to enter the Ph.D. program, they must then take the GRE, even though the only value of the exam is to "predict" their grades in courses they have already taken.

Sacks ends the book by noting some optimistic trends, such as the growing number of colleges and universities which no longer require applicants to take the SAT. However, breaking the tyranny of standardized testing will not be easy--the political pressures for the kind of superficial "standards" and "accountability" such tests provide are enormous. But reading Sacks' book, and freeing your own mind from the spell cast by standardized test scores, would be a good start.

5 out of 5 stars Review of "Standardized Minds".......2000-02-08

Mr. Sacks in his new publication, Standardized Minds, has done an outstanding job of placing norm-refrenced standardized tests, along with their associated multiple-choice item formats, in proper perspective. These tests have set standards for academic assessment for many years, and, as Mr. Sacks points out, are being questioned by many in the testing profession as being inapporpriate and insensitive as single and simplisthic guages of educational progress. He has documented extensive research on this subject, presented some impressive "case studies" of those who have been penalized in their career and life chioces based on "low" test scroes when all other extracurricular or in-school performances predicted otherwise. In addition to the many problems associated with mulitple-choice item types, a main focus is on the misunderstanding and misuse of the scores by all levels of society. As he so eloquently states, many educators are not properly taught how to interpret and use these data, legislative or government policy-makers have little or any idea of the substance or meaning of these scores, the media are at the mercy of the lack of knowledge (or political direction) fed them, and parents and children are left confused with numbers that do not give them specific constructive instructional information. The end result is that these test results are forced into a political and unethical framework which has greatly weakened their usefulness. If the desire is to help children learn and teachers teach, some interesting and effective alternatives are provided. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in improving educational assessment.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing paradigm shift.......2007-10-11

I can't stop thinking about this book! It's readable, entertaining, and brimming with incredibly astute insights and ideas. Overall, I had an amazing paradigm shift because of it.

As a future expert, Hiemstra describes both obvious and unobvious features of the future - like the population, oil, aging, nanotechnology, etc. That part of the book is fascinating and a great read in itself. But instead of just describing possibilities and probabilities, he explains how we create the future, and how the future in turn creates the present. That's where it really gets interesting. He even explains how to "be your own futurist," and how to create your career based on where the future is. It's truly inspiring. I was one of those people who never bothered to think about 15 or 20 years down the road, but now I realize that I MUST think about it. Honestly, this book changed my life. Very exciting!

Definitely check out this book. Even though the title is about profiting from the future, this book isn't just about profit, it's really about creating the world we want for ourselves (and creating some wealth while we're at it) - as individuals, and as a society. Highly recommended.

1 out of 5 stars Not much new here.......2007-06-26

I was personally diappointed by this book. I saw it advertised in The Futurist and went out and got it immediately. The first part of the book on trends was decent, summarizing five key trends to expect in the future. However, the book failed to deliver on its promise of "turning the future into revenue". If your looking for practical suggestions on how to capitalize on these trends look elsewhere.

The second part of the book was disappointing. It basically summarized what dozens of other books have already covered about defining a strategic vision, strategy, and short term wins to help move towards the future.

The third part of the book was just downright atrocious, with the author injecting his personal views about religion. For a classic book that does much more to cover the details of setting strategic direction, read "Competing for the Future" by Gary Hamal.

5 out of 5 stars A "Must Have" For Leaders.......2006-11-17

This is a GREAT book! While Part One is both interesting and helpful, Part Two is fantastic and totally relevant for all of us. The detailed explanation of a three-stage process for preferred future planning is absolutely worth the price of the book! There is a diagram in chapter 5 that will definitely become a permanent fixture in my white board planning exercises. Anyone leading an organization into the future will benefit from the ideas here. Turning the Future Into Revenue will help you learn to develop foresight, choose a future direction, and then decide on strategy. Fantastic!

5 out of 5 stars Every leader ought to get this book!.......2006-10-06

I read Turning the Future into Revenue last week and used some of the information to enhance a strategy meeting I facilitated. I love the book and think all leaders ought to get one. I found Part II, How to Predict the Future of Your Business or Career - And Plan for it Now, to be particularly helpful.

I highlighted the heck out of it - Glen goes beyond mentioning the trends to helping readers shape their future. I like Glen's distinction of a vision versus mission versus plan and I like the examples and structure he offers to help us create and move toward our preferred future.

The final section is a great call to action.

5 out of 5 stars On the Future.......2006-08-19

There are actually three different but interrelated stories woven together in Glen Hiemstra's very topical "Turning the Future into Revenue: what Businesses and Individuals Need to Know to Shape Their Futures". The first story explains how an organization - be it a company, government agency or non-profit - can do a better job of positioning itself to manage successfully whatever future world may occur by applying several carefully crafted tools and methods. The second story offers similar advice to individuals to apply these same tools and methods to preparing themselves personally for the future. In reality, the key to both of these approaches is the realization that through our own actions and choices we are constantly all creating the future, so we might as well do so in a positive and insightful manner rather than randomly.

The third story offers Glen's own personal perspective on the primary events, developments and trends (or EDTs) that will shape all of our futures, and how to start adapting today to take advantage of them. In particular, two concepts stand out. The first concept is the very real threat that global warming and pollution pose to the environmental balance of the planet and why reversing this threat now will both help us survive as a species and provide remarkable business opportunities as well. The second concept is the importance of equity; of sharing the abundance of income, goods and services, education and information that our modern high-tech global economy can generate more widely across the world's populations. Doing so successfully will defuse many potential friction points before they have a chance to emerge and create even greater problems for the world, particularly if this resentment feeds into fundamentalist movements of any ideology. Glen ends his volume with a stirring cry that we "start the twenty-first century all over again" (p. 210) and return to a spirit of optimism that can make a better future for the entire planet. After all, "[t]he future is something we do." (p. 211)

I highly recommend this volume to anyone who is curious about the future and how to prepare for it both personally and for the organizations to which they belong. I recommend it even more emphatically to those who do not now think about the future; after reading this book they will quickly realize how vital it is to do so. It is definitely worth the time.

Great stuff for the beginner in this book - small histories of US denominations, coin categories to buy with caution, useful pictorial guide on grading, basics on coin shows, great tips on preservation. Probably not woth a buy for the experienced, but it is called coin collecting 101. Could have done without all the pages of state quarters. Seriously, it looks like the author was just filling pages. 5 out of 5 stars Definitely worth a read for everyone interested in archeology .......2007-09-25

This book has so many strong points:

First of all, the author's uncompromising integrity gives his information tremendous plausibility. He rejects popular theories that lack true evidence, even if those theories would support his own beliefs. He's very honest about the limits of archeology, whether you are a biblical skeptic or a believer. He also admits that, due to ongoing discoveries, any book on archeology is outdated before it goes to print. Such humility is a refreshing change from how many archeologists, both minimalists (biblical scholars who minimize the authority of biblical text as a reliable source of historical and factual information about the past)and maximalists (biblical scholars who give maximum authority to the Bible as a source of, etc.), present their finds. Regardless, the finds that have stood the test are presented here in fascinating detail, both photographic and literary.

Price also emphasizes archeology's limits (mostly do to financial constraints). For example, Price writes that only 10% of discovered cuneiform tablets have been published. So yes, 50,000 tablets is a lot, but remember that means that there are 450,000 tablets that haven't been published. There is a lot of information like this in the book.

The discoveries and their conclusions are fascinating. I particularly liked the chapter discussing Sodom, its possible location, and the evidence discovered there showing that the houses had burned from the rooftops and downward.

Great photos throughout the book, and good organization, including a glossary.

Price maintains an admirably respectful tone when writing about minimalist archeologists, even though their beliefs and archeological philosophies must totally contradict his.

Price is obviously and enthusiastically Christian, but he doesn't in any way force his religious views on the reader, nor does he put down other religions. I'm Jewish, so I think I would've picked up on any slights (to my own religion, at least).

The style and tone of his writing is enjoyable. He has a sense of fun and wonder about his work that really comes through. It could be a dry subject, but Price gives it life.

Just a FYI: Here in Israel, a minimalist archeologist repeatedly insists that archeological evidence shows that camels were absolutely not domesticated in the time of Abraham. When a maximalist archeologist showed him clear and numerous evidence that camels WERE domesticated then, and that the Bible wasn't lying, the minimalist said he didn't care, and continues to this day to restate his original (and proven false) claims. Minimalists are obviously no more objective than maximalists, which is why I think it's very important to read books by straight-shooting archeologists (regardless of their religious views)like Randall Price in order to get the whole story.

It goes without saying: I loved this book!

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-05-23

This book is a wonderful tool for adult Sunday school teachers or those who want to learn more about the truths of the Bible.

2 out of 5 stars Great Concept - poor writing!.......2006-07-22

I was really excited to receive this book... however, I've had a difficult time enjoying reading it. The run-on sentences, poor grammer, and loose sentence structure are so distracting, that as a reader, you loose interest. I spent more time editing in my mind, then pulling together what the author was saying. Rather long-winded, I kept having the feeling of "let's get to the point." On a positive note, there are some fun pictures and the author does string together some interesting concepts. Personally, I just couldn't get past the writing. Summary - although interesting, don't expect concise writing.

5 out of 5 stars The Stones Cry Out By DR.J. Randall Price.......2005-03-19

If you don't belive the Bible and think that it's a peice of mythogical crap written by some great story teller, you've got to read this book. It showcases excavations in places pointed out by the Bible. Interesting archeological evidences that proves that the Bible speaks the whole truth and nothing but the truth. I bet you won't regret buying this book.

5 out of 5 stars Very informative introduction to biblical archeology.......2004-07-28

Price's book is a wonderful basic level survey of archeology as it relates to the Bible. A fascinating read that you wont want to stop reading, this book is well worth the cost.

This book is also a builder of faith for the one who believes the authenticity of the bible and a good source of verifiable facts that skeptics should consider. There are a lot of references to the Bible in order to make sense of the archeology.

The book is written in a simple style, with ordered, digestable sections. The author conveys a good sense of the excitement of the discoveries that have been made over the years. Just as importantly, he explains the difficulties and tediousness of the field.

Topics include the Ark, King David, the dead sea scrolls, the temple, the exodus .. basically all of the major topics in the scripture are addressed here. There are also a lot of pictures/photographs that were helpful. The end of the book also contains a series of useful charts and tables that were very helpful; chronologies of Israel, outlines of archeological eras, lists of museums, you name it.

I also found that the author did not oversell the facts. That is, he used the evidence wisely and did not try to go beyond the facts to prove his theories. When he speculates it is clearly mentioned. He is academically honest.

Book Description

What Price Israel? is an indispensable source of facts regarding the central issues in the Middle East. We still have not gotten the message of 9/11 and the ultimate reason behind it. We must settle the Palestinian problem.

Had Dr. Lilienthal's many admonitions relating cause and effect been thoroughly examined and acted upon by the leaders of the world and its people, we would not be fearing, as many do, that the Zionists are leading us down the path to Armageddon. Our remaining options for peace are few; our last wake-up call is now. Eleanor Peebles Hedlund, Tucson, Arizona

4 out of 5 stars Fifty years is not a long time in Middle East politics.......2006-09-07

Alfred Lilienthal's book gives an eyewitness account to the domestic US politics at the time of the formation of the state of Israel. He examines both the broader US political arena and the politics within American Jewry between those with an Israeli centric viewpoint and those with a more universalist interpretation of Judaism.

It would be simplistic to define this as a struggle between zionist and anti-zionist factions within Judaism as Lilienthal's blow by blow description shows that there were few, if any, 'anti-zionists'. There were however non-zionists with different degrees of allegiance to Israel and different degrees of cooperation with the "zionist" project, which itself had shades of meaning between those seeking a kind of minimalist (token?) jewish homeland in the middle east, through to a multi-ethnic multi-religious Palestine with distinct Arab and Israeli cantons on to those seeking a homogeneous jewish state in the middle east more or less encompassing all the world's jewry.

Lilienthal's position is very much in favour of a universalistic interpretation of judaism and he sees the focus on a Israeli state as virtually a new stage in the development of judaism, indeed virtually a new religion. For his skepticism, as Paul Findley tells us in another book, Lilienthal was himself formally excommunicated in 1982 from Judaism by a group of New York rabbis. Lilienthal's response..."Only God can do that. I still feel very much a jew." Lilienthal's discussion leaves open whether his brand of assimilationist judaism or the new israelist judaism is the real heresy.

Lilienthal argues that American and Israeli interests do not always coincide and that forces within the American jewish community, along with Christian zionists, have made defending and aiding the state of Israel central to US policy in the Mid East in ways that are inimical to wider US interests. In this volume Lilienthal was writing in terms of the Cold War struggle with the Soviet Union, and before the 1967 war, which saw a dramatic escalation of US sponsorship of Israel. Despite the end of the Cold War, the divergence may if anything, be greater now.

The book helps readers, admittedly from one skeptic's perspective, understand the roots of the US / Israeli alliance in the late 1940s, the domestic political considerations and the pressures all this imposed on the British then ruling Palestine whilst the British themselves were critically dependent on the US. No wonder they quit Palestine in a huff!

The book is well written in the fashion of good "Reader's Digest" style journalism. It was in Reader's Digest that Lilienthal first came to prominence with an article called "Israel's flag is not my flag". This article is available online at Alfred Lilienthal's web site. The book is not purely technical scholarship, and is undoubtedly polemical from Lilienthal's clearly stated position.

There is of course a lot of deja vu for those of us reading this book after 50 years have passed. Not much has really changed and nothing new seems to have emerged since Lilienthal first wrote this. The recent 'discovery', mainly invoked by leftist commentators, of Christian Zionist forces at work in the so called 'religious right' is really decades old news. One wonders how they could have slumbered through this development for so long. And there were forerunners to the notorious Pollard and AIPAC spy cases in the apparent leaking of classified Pentagon assessments to the Israel presumably from sources within the Truman White House.

Some of Lilienthal's side lights are quite interesting, although the evidence provided is better than anecdotal but less than scholarly. For example, Einstein's (at best) lukewarm support of an Israeli state, despite the efforts of Israeli nationalists to use his name for PR purposes. Einstein was a supporter of the Hebrew Univesity but was, if anything, skeptical of the value of the value of a 'jewish state'. This didn't stop his name being floated, and exploited for PR purposes, as a possible President of Israel. Then there are the efforts by some Israeli nationalists to exploit the postwar refugee issue, with some attempts to undermine resettlement efforts in the US and the west. Some enthusiasts indeed went so far as to run disinformation campaigns in European refugee camps of supposed anti-Jewish pogroms in America.

Harold Wilson back in the 1970s once declared "a week is a long time in politics". Not so in the middle east. Reading "What Price Israel?" shows just how little progress has been made in the broader issue of middle east peace, and in the conduct of middle east politics, in fifty years. Let's hope readers will not feel that way when the centenary of this book is reached.

3 out of 5 stars [Three-and-a-half stars out of Four] Another winner from Anti-Zionist Prof. Al Lilienthal.......2006-07-14

Lilienthal is wrong about the Nutzis and
the socalled 'holacau$t', but right about
everything else here, on Zionism, The Pal-
estinians, et, al. This book is not as po-
werful as the Zionist Connection, or Zionist
Connection II, but all his works as well as
those by Haviv Scheiber and Rabbi Elmer Ber-
ger are a far cry from what the United Na-
tions / New World Odor sycophants tell us!
I suggest every Amer-I-can that has rela-
tives in our military being sent over to the
tinderbox known as the 'middle east' get this!

5 out of 5 stars Eyewitness history of Palestine/Israel conflict .......2004-09-14

Alfred Lilienthal has been involved with seeking solutions to the Middle East conflict for over 50 years. Amazingly he is still alive and yet was present in 1947 for the UN partition vote that paved the way for the state of Israel. He was a Jewish American who represented the anti-Zionist American Council for Judaism at the UN discussions. The Council was against a Jewish state and favored a modern democratic state not based on race or religion. Contrary to what a previous reviewer implied, Lilienthal has of course never been against rights for Jews. He was and is against unequal rights for all involved and has always humanized both Palestinian Muslims and Christians rather than demonizing them in his writings.

Here in his own words from the book is his true position: "In fact, I lobbied against the Partition Resolution 181 because it was our belief that the creation of a "Jewish only" Zionist enclave in that region could lead to insecurity and war which would endanger the lives of Arabs and Jews alike. Finally, as patriotic Americans, we believed this did not serve the long-term interests of the United States. A state based upon religious or racial exclusivity could, I argued, result in what actually has happened these last fifty-six years: misery for all peoples in the area and American involvement in the on-going conflict in ways that has undermined our own democratic principles and national security. We foresaw that the price of Israel would indeed be high."

I read a tattered old copy of the 1953 book about a dozen years ago. It is great to now have a brand new copy updated with a substantial new introduction that deals with current events and even the neo-conservative influences on President Bush and their tie-in with the policies of Israeli Prime Minister Sharon that have only fomented more conflict, hatred, and death. Lilienthal points out what he believes must be a gradual start to a true peace process: "It is Washington that will be the principal ideological battleground where the crucial showdown will take place over whether there will or will not be a successful "Road Map" leading to the establishment of a Palestinian state to exist and flourish side by side with the existing state of Israel. If a real and lasting solution is to evolve, the voice of positive opposition in the United States-both Jews and Christians-as well as Arab Americans-along with secular groups right and left and in between-must be molded into a unified political force. The Zionist lobby, the many spineless politicians, and the biased media have to date had the final and decisive say as to the possibility of Middle East peace. They can similarly block any current or future peace plan as they have so successfully done other peace efforts in the past-the list would be a long one! Change will not be easy against such entrenched forces, but it is up to the increasing number of supporters of peace with justice to move forward with courage and determination."

This book provides the factual historical background often so unknown amongst many Americans. His sources are the original ones at the time over a half century ago. He explains the true meaning of the Balfour Declaration, why Truman changed his mind about not favoring a Jewish state since his original position of one democratic state for Arabs and Jews both had been in 1945 the same as the American Council for Judaism, the behind the scenes pressures on the UN representatives to vote for partition often against their own conscience, and the desire of the many Arab leaders who Lilienthal met in person to have a positive relationship with the United States. He quotes from a letter that John F. Kennedy sent to him in 1960: "Dear Alfred...I wholly agree that American partisanship in the Arab-Israel conflict is dangerous to both the United States and the Free World. My program merely calls for using the power of the President to bring the parties themselves to an agreement. For too long a time, this dispute has been a bitter cause of friction between the Arab nations and Israel. I would hope that both would be friends of the United States." It is unfortunate that Kennedy did not live long enough to attempt to carry out this more "even-handed" position that may have prevented the present clash of civilizations that now endangers the entire world. So unnecessary if Lilienthal and others like him had been heeded over 50 years ago!

1 out of 5 stars Will getting rid of human rights for Jews save the world?.......2004-07-25

We're not seeing anything new here. There have been plenty of antizionist books in the past, by Alfred Lilienthal and others, and there will be more in the future. Nazi attacks on Jews in the 1930s and 1940s did not save the world then, and Arab attacks on Israel won't save it today. Quite the contrary. Such attacks set a precedent for violence and destruction.

5 out of 5 stars Essential reading on the Israel/Palestinian conflict.......2004-07-06

Anyone who wants to learn the true cause of the conflict between the state of Israel and the Palestinians should read What Price Israel by Dr. Alfred Lilienthal. It lays out a well documented history of Canaan/Palestine and the founding of the Jewish State therein.

Dr. Lilienthal is one of the first American Jewish intellectuals to have had the courage and moral integrity to oppose the creation of Israel and condemn its premeditated expulsion of the Palestinians from the lands they and their ancestors have inhabited continuously for 9000 years.

While I am sure most readers will welcome the insights and facts Dr. Lilienthal provides, others will find it difficult to admit to themselves that what they have hitherto believed to be the truth is far from it.
