One sided but interesting.......2005-08-01
A bit one sided, but what can you expect. Still a very interesting perspective on Pepsi's strategy throughout history and especially during the cola wars. Must have been an exciting time to work for the company. Lots of interesting business/branding issues.
You may also want to read something by Sergio Zyman who was CMO for Coke at thew time, now of Zyman Group to get a wider perspective. He's written `The End of Marketing as We Know It' , `The End of Advertising as We Know It' , `Renovate Before You Innovate : Why Doing the New Thing Might Not Be the Right Thing'
, `Building Brandwidth: Closing the Sale Online' ...
But yes I definitely enjoyed this book about Pepsi.

Well....................................2003-06-05
This book is a nice history tool. Whoever who was there at the eighties would remember the epic "Colas war" between Pepsi and Coke. You could have a lot of insights about advertising, diversification and marketing at the time with this book. Problems are: (1) This is obviusly biased, for Enrico couldn't write a book granting any victory to Coke; (2) What happened next: Goizueta became sort of brahman of the business community of America and the main topic of Enrico's book (the debacle of New Coke due, according to him, to Coke's despair because of the excellent performance of Pepsi which in turn lead to this well-rememberede disaster) has became a classic case of how a leader turns a catastrophe into a golden opportunity. Of course, debacle it was when the book was written and I bought all the insights of Enrico, but almost 20 years after it doesn't seem such a problem at all. At the end, in spite of this book, considering the market value of Coke and the results of its planning, probably it was Coke's army leaded by Goizueta who won the war if it was a war at all, since nobody call like this any more.

A must read book for every young executive!.......1999-05-07
While reading this book, I actually felt like I was in Pepsi's corporate headquarters, in Purchase New York, listening in on their strategic planning and implementation. Roger Enrico wrote this book when he was just the president of Pepsi USA. He tells a great story of the underdog going to battle with the giant. Today Enrico is the CEO of Pepsi CO, and responsible for the spin off that created the new company Tricon. Reading this book will emphasize one's understanding of the importance and value of having a good mentor. Also, after reading Enrico's accounts of the "cola wars" one may never want to watch television or go to the movies again, because all of the real life drama is created by the competition that corporate America thrives on. Enrico points out that Pepsi alone sells enough soft drinks in a year to float an entire armada, and then proposes the question "why?" As he says, water is a lot cheaper and booze provides a better kick. Its all about great marketing. Once I picked the book up, I couldn't put it down.

Book Description
How food marketers make use of key variables--such as innovation; target market; market segmentation; image; and physical, environmental, and human resources--determines how successfully they sell their products. Michman and Mazze concentrate on the food industry as they examine what contributes to a successful marketing campaign. The authors discover that not all variables have to be used concurrently; some may be more important than others depending on environmental conditions, and the effective use of one variable may cancel the ineffectiveness of another. By focusing on the key variables to use in a volatile economic environment, by emphasizing lessons learned from both marketing successes and failures, and by demonstrating how to adapt key variables to changing conditions, Michman and Mazze help executives ensure the success of their marketing efforts. Mazze and Michman examine 10 institutional formats in the American food marketing and distribution structure--supermarkets, fast-food, ice cream, soup, breakfast cereal, baby food, ethnic food, snack food, candy and soft-drinks. The supermarket industry is analyzed first with an overview of food marketing and distribution. Specific industries are then analyzed using the five key variables (innovation, image, target market, physical environment, and human resources) with a historical framework to help managers learn from past marketing mistakes. The authors emphasize that avoidance of past mistakes is essential for sound marketing strategy, a fact illustrated by the examples of companies afflicted by injuries who have disregarded this advice.

Once upon a time in the United States, before the ubiquitous yellow arches of a certain hamburger chain spread like chicken pox, eating on the go was an occasion. Those long-gone days when customer service was number one--and meals were dished up by enthusiastic young women costumed to resemble drum majorettes--are captured in this compilation of vintage photographs and memorabilia, crammed to overflowing with nostalgia.
Book Description
Travel back to the heyday of the American drive-in restaurant --complete with swinging ponytails, shiny new automobiles, and the aroma of French fries drifting through unrolled car windows. Beginning with the original Texas Pig Stand of 1921, this evocative compendium cruises through 40 years of drive in culture, tracing the history of roadside restaurant architecture and the people who created it. Engagingly illustrated with historical photographs and a rich assortment of related ?ephemera, from menus to matchbox covers, Car Hops and Curb Service chronicles a unique chapter of popular culture for anyone who sipped a malt, hung a tray, or cruised a drive in parking lot -- or wished they had.

Drive Inns.......2007-01-23
Talk about filled with information-this book has all of the pictures and the details behind the car hops. I thought the uniqueness behind the Tam O Shanter was cool. Also, the celebrities that went to the drive inns and what they ordered. The book explains some of the history behind the word "car hop." Just a fun, light read!!! Highly recommended for those people who remember going to the A&W or other drive inn, especially in California.
Book Description
Drawing on scores of interviews with black and white tobacco workers in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Robert Korstad brings to life the forgotten heroes of Local 22 of the Food, Tobacco, Agricultural and Allied Workers of America-CIO. These workers confronted a system of racial capitalism that consigned African Americans to the basest jobs in the industry, perpetuated low wages for all southerners, and shored up white supremacy.
Galvanized by the emergence of the CIO, African Americans took the lead in a campaign that saw a strong labor movement and the reenfranchisement of the southern poor as keys to reforming the South--and a reformed South as central to the survival and expansion of the New Deal. In the window of opportunity opened by World War II, they blurred the boundaries between home and work as they linked civil rights and labor rights in a bid for justice at work and in the public sphere.
But civil rights unionism foundered in the maelstrom of the Cold War. Its defeat undermined later efforts by civil rights activists to raise issues of economic equality to the moral high ground occupied by the fight against legalized segregation and, Korstad contends, constrains the prospects for justice and democracy today.
Customer Reviews:
Fascinating history, important analysis--read it!.......2004-05-07
This is a terrific book--an important history that brings together a story of race, labor unions, economic change, politics, and culture, but never loses sight of the actual people involved. Very well written--not dry and academic like some history, but also very rich analytically. Buy it and read it!
Fabulous story, fabulous storytelling.......2003-06-28
In this wonderful book, African American tobacco workers tell their own story of civil rights struggle and union organizing. It is long, but so was the struggle, and I couldn't put it down. Oral interviews give us the black workers' own accounts, sending, for once, the white supremacists to the back of the bus.
Read it. You will find a South you never thought you would find.

Guinness Is Guinness: The Colourful Story of a Black and White Brand (Great Brand Stories series)
ASIN: 1859181759 |
Book Description
For most of the period 1886-1939, Guinness was the largest and most successful brewery in the world. It was easily the leading international enterprise in what is now the Irish Republic, dominant in the home market, a key player in the British, and increasingly significant in the pre-war overseas trade. Its remarkable growth in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries owed much to its differences from other large breweries. Unlike them it concentrated on a single product - - stout --, and had no capital locked away in tied houses. It also gained from the lengthy, shrewd family management of the first Lord Iveagh and from investing early in scientific inquiry, barley and hop research, and the employment of scientists as its managerial caste.
The First World War produced a more hostile climate for the company, for many reasons but chiefly by changes in excise duty, as well as difficulties of maintaining sales as the post-war depression approached. The step that Iveagh had long resisted - -advertising - - had at last to be adopted. Characteristically Guinness leapt to the front immediately in this field too.
This is the story of the company’s rise to high prosperity and subsequent struggle to hold its ground in an increasingly inimical environment. It is also the story of a company unique in its recruitment, welfare, and industrial relations systems, which insulated Guinness to a remarkable degree against the vicissitudes of Dublin life in the stormy years between the heyday of Home Rule and Hitler’s precipitation of world conflict in 1939

Book Description
* "An important book that should be read by everyone who cares about how the way food is produced affects our own health as well as that of the environment and our national economies" --Marion Nestle, author of Food Politics
* Outlines policy debates on where food is to come from; who makes/grows/sells it; and what consumers can do
* Sets out the options for the future--how to provide wholesome food and a healthy environment
The growth of a single global market is having far-reaching impacts on what we eat and profound implications for public health. In developing countries, endemic problems of a "Western" diet are found alongside food shortages. What matters now is not just what we eat but how it has been produced, distributed, and processed--a global politics of food and health.
In the first full examination of these developments, the authors describe the two quite different paradigms of the production and supply of food that are competing to replace the industrial productionist model dominant over the last century. One centers on the life sciences, the other on an ecological approach. Food Wars argues that both have strong support but one dominates investment. Both draw on biology but differ in their social and political understanding. The authors argue that the outcome of the "Food Wars" is hugely important for food security and whether the enormous inequities in the present system are tackled.

Los Bacardí
ASIN: 0745318738 |
Book Description
The Bacardi rum company is one of the most successful and recognizable brands in the world. It spends millions on marketing itself as the spirit of youth and vitality. But behind its image as a party drink lies a very different story.
In this book, investigative journalist Hernando Calvo Ospina brings to light the commercial and political activities of the Bacardi empire to reveal its role in fostering the 40-year long confrontation between the United States and the revolutionary government of Cuba. Through meticulous research, Calvo Ospina reveals how directors and shareholders of the family-owned firm have aggressively worked to undermine the Castro government. He explores how they have been implicated in supporting paramilitary organizations that have carried out terrorists attacks, and reveals their links to the extreme right-wing Cuban-American Foundation that supported Ronald Regan's Contra war in Nicaragua.
"Bacardi: The Hidden War" explains the company's hand in promoting "special interest" legislation against its competitor, Havana Club Rum, which is manufactured in Cuba and promoted by the European company Pernod-Ricard. Calvo Ospina reveals the implications of Bacardi's involvement in this growing dispute that threatens to create a trade war between America and Europe. Exploring the Bacardi empire's links to the CIA, as well as its inside links with the Bush administration, this fascinating and readable account shows how multinational companies act for political as well as economic interests.
"Bacardi: The Hidden War" was first published in Spanish and has been translated into French, Dutch, German and Italian.
Customer Reviews:
What about Bacardi's anti-Batista /pro-Castro history?.......2003-12-02
The Bacardis along with other elite Cuban families bankrolled Castro's rebel forces for years, and in the case of Bacardi provided sponsored a visit for Washington officials to demonstrate Fidel Castro's democratic credentials in 1957.
Why isn't that dark chapter mentioned in this so-called tell all book. The Bacardis have a consistent history of being anti-dictator both in the case of Batista and of Castro. I wonder how the author could leave out their support of a violent, thuggish, ex-patriate who wandered around Miami raising funds for waging unconventional warfare against Cuban nationals. But in that case the expatriate (or exile if you prefer) was Fidel Castro, and the tyrant was Fulgencio Batista.
"In the spring of 1957 Washington had sent an official fact-finding mission to the island to learn more about the rebel leader. ... The American delegation found that the rebels had appealed to a desire in many Cubans, from all classes, who were tired of the Cuban dictatorship. The tour itself had been sponsored by the owner of Bacardi rum as a way of easing American anxieties about the Castros."
From "ONE HELL OF A GAMBLE" KHRUSHCHEV, CASTRO, AND KENNEDY, 1958-1964 by Aleksandr Fursenko and Timothy Naftali
Hmmmmm....I wonder how they could miss something this big? Half truths?
Entering a murky world.......2002-10-03
This book explores the murky world of the Bacardi Empire. Bacardi has had dealings with the CIA and the extreme right-wing National Cuban-American Foundation (CANF) as well as links with both political and violent attempts to overthrow the Cuban government. This began almost from the Revolution in January 1959 and has continued to the present day. As the prologue puts it, the book: "raises fundamental issues about the relationship between multinational corporations and imperialist politics, about the instrumental use by the state of private corporations to serve state-directed terrorism."
Bacardi has sought to use US laws to put a stranglehold on Cuban trade. This includes sponsoring the Helms-Burton Act that tightens the 40-year blockade. The author comments that "the text is so severe and over-arching that doubtless not even the laws and treaties imposed on African colonies by the European powers have contained such a degree of arrogance and lack of respect for a sovereign nation."
Bacardi lawyers were also heavily involved in writing the new trade laws that mean Cuban brands are no longer recognized in the US. Havana Club rum's French partner Pernod-Ricard (the major competitor to Bacardi) has convinced the European Union that such moves are an infringement of fair-trading laws.
Bacardi and others are aiming not just to remove Castro from power but establish Cuba as a colony of the US with chosen front men running the place.
