Dissapointing.......2007-08-24
Not what it's cracked up to be. Not enough foods to choose from.
Glycemic Index information.......2007-08-16
This book is repetitive in some ways, but the information provided is easy to understand and the food lists and menu suggestions make it easy to latch onto the concept. A good reference for diabetics and nondiabetics alike.
Good for what it contains........2007-07-17
Good quick reference, solid information, however I thought the shopper's list would be more extensive. The information it holds is good...except it is not oriented to an American audience at this time...many brand names included are not typical American fare.
This is not a major detractor from the real information it's imparting, just annoying to find something you know you can eat, only to find you have to have it imported. Luckily time will improve all such lists as this, so I'm willing to give it 4 out of 5 stars.
No Shoppers Guide.......2007-07-03
I took it with me to the supermarket and it was of very little use. On the one hand there is too much information to wade through and the other too little. The too little is the 'guide' part. What we need is a little book with comprehensive listings only for quick reference in the supermarket aisle. I subsequently took some time to do my research, then made my own list and had it laminated!!
Limited.......2007-05-13
The list is limited. I was expecting something more like a calorie count book, that also included the glycemic index value.

PCOS.......2007-04-19
This book has given my daughter and me more info on this disease than any doctor has been able to do. The book has given my daughter encouragement that she can live with this syndrome and that she can make her life better if she takes the metformin and gets her body moving. The info on food has helped sooooooo much. Thank you for this book!!!!!!
Very informative.......2007-02-20
I found this book had a lot of great information about PCOS. I thought I knew a lot about PCOS, but never really understood insulin resistance. The book does a great job explaining in terms that anyone can understand. I am enjoying the recipes and finding that following the meal plan is fairly simple.
Another great book in the New Glucose Rev. series!.......2007-02-12
I've read/own most of the books in the New Glucose Revolution family and have followed a low GI diet since 2004 when I read the original book. I have PCOS and found this one a few months ago and I LOVE this one the best I think out of all of them. I loved that it really targeted WHY a low GI diet works with PCOS, and how you can stop the cycle and bring your hormones in check. I love that they do mention using Metformin in correlation with the diet too and that really made me feel good knowing that they had brought up the medicine too since I do take Met. I've lost over 30lbs. and am still losing and highly recommend this book for anyone struggling with PCOS!
New Glucose Revolution Guide to Living Well with PCOS.......2007-02-07
Fantastic book to read for anyone with PCOS. Gave a great insight into PCOS and how to manage it.
LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT!!!!.......2007-01-09
I LOVE THIS BOOK!!!! I didn't realize how my PCOS and insulin affected my body. By following the principals in the book, I have lost about 10 pounds over the past 6 weeks or so! The principals in the book are easy to follow, and foods recommended to eat are easy to find, cook, and eat!
A definite must for those with PCOS!!

Forget the high-carb, low-carb debate. The glycemic index (GI)--a measure of carbohydrate quality based on how quickly a food raises blood-glucose (blood sugar) levels--is the dietary key to health, say the authors. Contrary to other diets that treat carbohydrates as all alike, The New Glucose Revolution divides carbos according to their GI into two categories. One is high GI (less desirable): carbohydrates that break down quickly during digestion, leading to fast and high blood-glucose response. Examples are baked potatoes, sports bars, instant rice, corn flakes cereal, and baguettes. The other is low GI (more desirable): carbohydrates that break down slowly during digestion, leading to a gradual glucose release. Examples here are pasta, whole grains, fruit, legumes, and yams.
A low-GI diet is especially recommended for people with diabetes, abdominal overweight, and Syndrome X, say the authors, who have strong medical, nutritional-science, and diabetes education credentials. They explain the importance of understanding GI values, how GI is determined, health applications, and how to choose low-GI foods and balance the overall GI load. They give cooking tips, menu ideas, and 47 recipes. A 68-page table gives the GI values of many foods, including brand names. The New Glucose Revolution is recommended for health-conscious readers who want to understand the glycemic index and how to incorporate it into their diet. --Joan Price

Customer Reviews:
A sales job rather than a 'how to'.......2007-09-12
I know this book has rave reviews, which is why I ordered it after being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. But it seems to me that most of the book is bascially meant to sell the reader on the fact that the GI is a worthwhile measure to use to eat well.
It has only "more than 45 recipes"...and its "authoritative tables of GI values" are, for the most part useless. You can find most of the information for the staples listed on the Internet, like those for beans and fruits. Much of the tables include name-brand products that I would never use. For example:
--Under beverages, it lists the values for products like: Trim Advantage, President's Choice.
--Under cookies and crackers: Ancient Grains by President's Choice, Cranberry Orange by President's Choice, gluten-free choc chip cookie, Ryvita Fruit Crunch Crispbread, Wheat and Sesame Snack Crackers by President's Choice.
--Dairy: Frozen Yogurt, Mochaccino, President's Choice; for many individual flavors of Yoplait yogurt.
I bought this book to learn how to eat lower GI foods. I struggled through the first many chapters of the authors trying to convince me that GI is an acceptable measure.
If you're looking for a way to integrate the GI index into your lifestyle, I don't think this book is it -- a cookbook or comprehensive book listing GI values of foods ONLY might be better. If, however, you know nothing about the GI index, this book might prove useful.
The New Glucose Revolution.......2007-08-23
Recently I was diagnosed with prediabetes and attended a diabetes seminar on nutrition. As a longtime member of the health profession I thought I was fairly knowledgeable in the field of nutrition. Wrong again! The information in this book is easily readable and is guaranteed to change your eating habits if you have insulin resistance or any type of blood glucose problems. By following the practical information in this book I have brought my readings back to the normal range. Some of the information in this book was very surprising and unexpected. The authors give practical information that is usable. This is not a typical diet book or one that promotes new herbal or chemical miracles. My nutritionist said the glycemic index is the wave of the future. I belive it.
Good Synopsis for Complicated Subject.......2007-08-16
The glycemic index can be so daunting and overwhelming. This book summarizes the material in a clear manner using laymen's terminology. The explanations of the research and content are clearly understood. If I had to find any "short-coming," I would just ask for a lengthier list of GI foods. Close to 1,700 foods have been tested so far, and only a small fraction of these foods are included in the GI list of foods. Other than that, this books makes the GI index user-friendly!
Very informative........2007-08-09
I haven't completely finished reading the book, yet. But, it seems to cover every aspect of eating low glycemic index foods. The charts listing the ratings of foods are very helpful, as are the recipes. I've gotten a clearer understanding of how foods breakdown at different rates after you eat them. Can't wait to finish reading.
Awesome Book.......2007-05-18
I really enjoyed this book and its new views for a diabetic diet. Still trying some things out but it seems to be working so far. It cleared up a lot of things for me concerning my diet and the traditional low carb diabetic diet.

Join them in a remarkable journey through inner space -- a spellbinding world of cells, systems, and chemistry that bears the impress of a still deeper, unseen reality. This Gold medallion Award-winning book uncovers eternal statements that God has made in the very structure of our bodies, presenting captivating insights into the Body of Christ.
Customer Reviews:
new way to look at our bodies - physical and spiritual.......2007-08-10
I learned about the functions of the body in an easy to understand layman's discussion: that is, the skeleton, the skin, etc. He tells stories about people he has treated that exhibited some of the illnesses when these areas of the body do not work as they should. At the same time he relates this information on a spiritual realm. Although the book is not new, I liked the way he wrote and found it an easy way to learn about a lot of how my body works.
Amazing Look at the Human Body.......2007-02-20
This is primarily a book about the human body and the startling complexity of what is under (and a part of) our skin. Four main areas of our bodies are discussed; the skin which holds us all in, our cells which make up an intrinsic little universe inside each human body, human bones and lastly motion. The insights into the physical human body are enough to make this book great for it shows that whoever or whatever created the human body was unfathomably intelligent. I prefer to believe that God was the designer and so this book causes me to be in awe of God, who I believe to be the creator of mankind. But for an atheist, this book would have to cause him or her to give great awe and respect toward chance. For if chance created our human bodies, it did one heck of a job. Though primarily about the physical human body, the authors are constantly making application to the spiritual body of Christ which, as the Bible tells us, is the entire group of people on earth who have believed in Jesus Christ. The Bible also makes a lot of comparisons between this strange group of people and the human body. Paul (one of the human authors of the Bible) tells us that God sees this group of people (I will refer to it as the church henceforth) like a human body, with many different parts, each part with a special function. In Yancey and Brand's book, they explore the different aspects of the human body and then show how these apply to the church. The analogies are insightful into how we as Christians are to function. In the introduction to the book Yancey writes, "In a sense, metaphorical symbols are the only way for us to grasp spiritual truths, which explains why the Bible uses them so lavishly... the human body expresses spiritual reality so authentically that soon the common stuff of matter will appear more and more like a mere shadow."
Yancey is a great author, and Brand is clearly a great doctor. The book is written as well as Yancey's other books and it is broken down into 25 short chapters. Each chapter has a specific point, and most chapters also offer an analogy about the church, the spiritual body of Christ. I read the book in 25 days, a chapter daily which was an excellent pace to be able to digest the book while still keeping it constantly fresh in my mind. I would recommend the book to any Christian eager to be astounded by the human body and the spiritual analogies that come from the mysteries of our physical bodies.
The World of Medicine Through Spiritual Eyes.......2002-02-12
Note: This review refers to an additional book, "In His Image" by the same author that I consider a "companion" to this one.
In both these books the authors take us into the world of medicine as seen through spiritual eyes. The parallels between our own bodies and the Body of Christ are fascinating to say the least. Read, for example, how when one area of our physical body is injured an urgent call goes out and hundreds of thousands of cells respond by plugging the holes in the walls, protecting the weak, cleansing the area and rebuilding itself. Read also how the body responds when there is rebellion loose within it. The list includes the workings of: (Fearfully and Wonderfully Made) cells, bones, skin, motion, (In His Image) image, blood, head, spirit and pain.
The reading style is very relaxed and everything is explained simply so that you don't need a degree in chemistry to understand what's going on. A special bonus is Dr. Brand's focus on his life's work with lepers which is interwoven throughout both books. If you've got an interest in how the physical body works and how it relates to biblical concepts, get these books - you won't be disappointed. -- Moza
Absolutely fascinating.......2001-06-06
I highly recommend all of Dr. Brand's and Yancey's collaborative efforts. This one is fairly short and readable and the emphasis here is on the intricate workings of the human body, and what it suggests to us about how the Body of Christ works or should work. Just the chapter on the properties of bone is fascinating enough to warrant reading this book. The gift of movement, or the protection of our skin, is something we most likely take for granted. Dr. Brand will rob us of that conceit! He also gives examples from his groundbreaking work in treating leprosy to show just how precious a healthy body can be. The real message, however, is that God's design for his church is not accidental- just like a working body, it is intricate beauty, strength, and order in dynamic motion!
Fascinating Case for Design in the World!.......2000-11-08
If you're like me, you have occasionally wondered at the human body. You might have marveled at the birth of a newborn, or wondered how in the world all of your parts work together so well. I am NOT a biology person. I took one course of biology in high school, and that was plenty for me. But this book is *fascinating*. It tells you things about yourself that you would have never guessed. It makes an amazing case for a Creator who uses a specific design in human beings. It makes the case so well that I was overwhelmed at times, gasped, and told whoever happened to be in the room what I had just read.
This book will make you much more confident in your belief in a Creator. It will give you amazing real-life facts that back up the Biblical ones. I have not been the same since reading this book several years ago. I still remember the impact it made on me, and I can still share with others fervently that there is design here. And the design cannot be argued. If you think it can be, read this book.
Book Description
A WORLD WITHOUT PAIN?
Can such a place exist? It not only can—it does. But it’s no utopia. It’s a colony for leprosy patients: a world where people literally feel no pain, and reap horrifying consequences.
His work with leprosy patients in India and the United States convinced Dr. Paul Brand that pain truly is one of God’s great gifts to us. In this inspiring story of his fifty-year career as a healer, Dr. Brand probes the mystery of pain and reveals its importance. As an indicator that lets us know something is wrong, pain has a value that becomes clearest in its absence.
The Gift of Pain looks at what pain is and why we need it. Together, the renowned surgeon and award-winning writer Philip Yancey shed fresh light on a gift that none of us want and none of us can do without.
Customer Reviews:
Moving account.......2007-10-19
This book is a moving account, part biographical, part medical that gives incredible insight into the experience of pain. Pain is protective and a subjective experience. Dr. Brand makes things imminently clear and understandable. Great read.
Paul Brand, the eloquent voice of hand surgery.......2007-05-31
I am a hand therapist, an occupational therapist who specializes in hand and upper extremity conditions and injuries. Paul Brand was an amazing man, an inspiring teacher and writer. Of course Philip Yancey coauthored this book, but this is Brand's own voice. It reads much like his professional writing, with clear and vivid analogies to explain difficult concepts. I never had the privilege of working with him, but I was lucky enough to spend time with him at various conferences and courses. He was a deeply spiritual man who spoke with both authority and humility, and possessed a sparkling sense of humor.
The book does not by any means cover Dr. Brand's entire career, but sheds a very bright light on the groundbreaking work he did with Hansen's disease (leprosy) patients. In the US, he moved to the Carville, Louisiana Hansen's disease center and continued to publish his writing, and to teach and guide hand surgeons and hand therapists. He was made an honorary member of the American Society of Hand Therapists, one of many honors showered on him throughout his distinguished career.
Please read this book. It will inspire you and give you fascinating food for thought.
Engrossing and powerful!.......2007-04-23
I have not quite finished reading this book (though I've skimmed the last chapters and know some of their content), but I am so excited about it that I could not wait to post this review! Be forewarned: those reviewers who used the phrases "can't put it down" and "the dishes will stack up" and "a page-turner" are not exaggerating. Every day I look forward to the time when I can open this book again and read, and I have lost not a few hours of sleep staying up late to read just a little more.
Paul Brand's account, expressed in Yancey's superb writing, of his investigation of the causes of leprosy and its devastating effects reads like a detective story, with pieces of the puzzle falling into place one by one. The stories of successes and failures are always placed in the context of the lives of real people. Brand's reflections on pain are never heavy-handed, always instructive, sometimes challenging, often humbling and awe-provoking.
If you work in the medical field, as I do, I cannot urge you strongly enough to read this book!! It should be required reading in every medical school, nursing school and PT/OT school. I have already started to re-tune my approach to patients with pain a little, and I have begun rethinking my own pain of various kinds.
Paul Brand was a compassionate genius of the highest order. I've never heard that he won a Nobel Prize for medicine or the Nobel Peace prize, but he should have. He applied his genius with sacrificial energy, enthusiasm, humility and humanity to helping "the least of these".
I wish I had read this book sooner. I recommend it more highly than I can express.
A Truly Great Book.......2007-02-19
This was the first book that introduced me to the writing of Philip Yancey. He is a truly great writer and this story of Dr. Brand's life is exceptional. I suffer with chronic pain and have for many years. I was profoundly impacted by the wisdom of this book and found that reading it has made a healing difference in how I view my pain. Not only that, the tale of Dr. Brand's life is fascinating. I never knew much at all about leprosy and thought it was a disease of the past.
I think the title can deter some people from reading it. I remember hearing about it when I wasn't in chronic pain and it definitely did not sound like a subject I wanted to dwell on. For some reason, though, I purchased it and put it up on a shelf for years. One day I happened on it--when I was ready to read it.
Do miss this. The human body and the God who designed it is truly amazing.
Read and rejoice in this book!.......2006-12-16
Dr. Paul Brand's "The Gift of Pain" (with Philip Yancey co-authoring) is probably my favorite-ever book. It reads like a mystery, a biography and a story-teller's yarn all at the same time. Be careful - once you pick this book up you won't want to put it down; the dishes will pile up in the sink and you'll stay up later than you should, reading by flashlight if necessary. Apart from the Bible, I can't recall any other book that has been so uplifting to my soul. It is the only book that, after reading a library copy, I bought not one but two copies: one to keep and one to loan out to anyone I can encourage to read it. The Brand/Yancey team also wrote two other excellent works ("In His Image" and "Fearfully and Wonderfully Made"), and there is a biography of Dr. Brand entitled "Ten Fingers for God." All well worth reading, but "Pain" is by far the best. My only regret is not having met Dr. Brand personally. If I had to choose one man (apart from Jesus himself) to point out to my son and tell him, "Grow up to be like that man," it would be Dr. Paul Brand. Do your soul a favor; read this book!

There's a new kid in town!.......2007-04-25
Throw away your old marketing books! Raymond Nadeau has brought marketing into the 21st century. It is simply marketing with a soul, connecting with real human beings. And that's what the 21st century is about...listening and connecting. Raymond will show you how.
A must read for brand owners-how to think like & be a brand leader. M, Alfandari, Pres. MODA International Marketing/Licensing.......2007-03-28
Raymond Nadeau articulates the sociological frame of reference necessary for marketing a brand. He puts into words the web of information and analysis that is integral to developing and executing a brand strategy. He makes clear that marketers must employ both sociological and, anthropological reality checks to achieve a brand's success and sustain its cultural connection and relevance over time. Those of us in the business of building brands and brand extensions, appreciate seeing, perhaps for the very first time, something in black and white that confirms what we know intuitively and what is in our heads and hearts. He affirms that for great marketers, seeing and listening to the consumer is the best consumer market research. Bravo to Raymond for un-muddling a process that is both academic and intuitive, something simple that business is often guilty of having made overly complex.
"Living Brands" - Live and Let Live.......2007-03-05
Great Book!
The author has a great understanding of the need for the Brands of the new millenium to be alive, to morph according to new trends. This way they will evolve and may never die. He presents interesting cases and interviews executives from Trendspotting agencies.
What the author misses is a more complete approach to Branding: he doesn't develop the holistic concept of it.
Powerfully Thought Provoking.......2007-01-21
A must read for anyone in brand management, advertising or general marketing. Today's culture is all about brands, what they mean to consumers and how they must be nutured by marketers. The book captures this dynamic in a thought provoking manner. Simply powerful.
This book should be a must read for marketing majors.......2007-01-19
Raymond makes this book so stimulating! I found it very interesting and once started reading ,was hard to put it down. He has a great vision and gets his readers excited about the roll of marketing the way he puts it. His innovative ways of marketing can be successful in fascinating the customers.

Book Description
With each passing day, yet another health, diet, and nutrition expert or author gets on the glycemic index (GI) bandwagon. In 2003 The South Beach Diet joined New York Times best-selling books by Dr. Andrew Weil, Harvard’s Dr. Walter Willett, Dr. Robert Atkins, Dr. Barry Sears, and many others in advocating taking into account the GI values of foods as a key element in a healthy, lifelong diet. But the authoritative source of information on the GI remains the Glucose Revolution series—and The New Glucose Revolution Life Plan is the book that situates the GI within today’s complete nutrition picture. Both an introduction to the benefits of low-GI foods and an essential source of new information for those already familiar with the concept, it charts a clear course through today’s complicated nutrition maze—and offers easy-to-follow guidelines for choosing the right diet. This new edition has been revised throughout in two-color with an 8-page photo insert featuring some of the fifty delicious, easy-to-prepare recipes offered in the book, as well as a complete, up-to-date table of GI and new glycemic load values for more than eight hundred foods and beverages.

The Glucose Revolution Life Plan.......2007-09-03
I was very skeptical about this method of blood glucose control, but after a friend tried it and lost five pounds, I thought I'd give it a try.
I shop according to the pantry lists in the book and find that my family's overall food costs have decreased - along with my weight, thanks to the "bigger bodies" meal plan sample. Also, it gives a couple of different nutrient profiles (% cho, % fat, % pro) to choose from. I like the Paleolithic profile (Caveman), personally.
I like most of the recipes in the book and am able to change them a little to suit my tastes while maintaining the nutritional integrity of the dish. The food is not dull or boring. I really like the meal suggestions - they teach me what my meals need to "look" like. The authors even included a meal planner suitable for kids, which is great, since Type II is a hereditary condition.
Best of all, I have been able to reduce my bg levels to a normal range, lose weight and have A LOT of energy to get the execise in that completes my lifestyle goal.
There are couple of recipes that sounded like something I would like, but turned out not very tasty, so I scored the book a "4". Still, I highy recommend this book.
I am a skeptic, turned believer.

THE VOICE OF GOD IS A HEARTBEAT AWAY
In Fearfully & Wonderfully Made, Philip Yancey and Dr. Paul Brand revealed how God’s voice is encoded in the very structure of our bodies. In His Image takes up where its predecessor left off, beckoning us once again inward and onward to fresh exploration and discovery.
Yancey and Brand show how accurately and intricately the human body portrays the Body of Christ. In five sections—Image, Blood, Head, Spirit, and Pain—the acclaimed surgeon and the award-winning writer unlock the remarkable, living lessons contained in our physical makeup. This Gold Medallion Award-winning book will open your eyes to the complex miracle of the human body, and the even more compelling spiritual truths that it reflects.

Hope for the destitute .......2007-02-22
Dr. Paul Brand and Philip Yancey explain how God is in everything that happens to us, wither we are in great pain, or overcome by joy. The stories that he told about when he was in India are astounding, wither he was trying to repair a Leper victims hands, or just trying to persuade his mother to stop living in the mountains by herself when she was taking care of the natives.
In the United States Dr. Paul Brand has the title, Chief of Rehabilitation of the U.S. Public Health in Carville, Louisiana, Clinical Professor of Surgery at Louisiana State University Medical School, he was also awarded the prestigious Albert Lasker Award and appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire. But in this book you will find him in India with the title, Dr. Brand, who was never too proud to do the dirtiest jobs, like bandaging the blistered feet of lepers or cleaning puss from a boils victim. If you want to read about a man who was a true servant sent by God to help the poorest of the poor and to give hope to the destitute, you'll find this book irresistible.

In His Image!.......2004-09-13
No one can claim that evolution is true after reading this spritually and educationally written book. It is an eye opener of the human body and what God and the bible has to do with it.This book was an edification and encouragement to me and I hope that you will find the inspiration that I have found from this book.I don't regret buying this book and garuntee you won't to!
Excellent reading.......2004-06-17
This is a lovely book, entertaining to read, and thought-provoking. Once you set it down, it's likely you'll wonder how anyone can believe we're an "accident" of the Big Bang and evolution. :)
Get 'em both!.......2002-02-12
Note: This review refers to an additional book, "Fearfully and Wonderfully Made" by the same author that I consider a "companion" to this one.
-- Moza
