The Fifty Dollar and Up Underground House Book
ASIN: 1879628171 |
Book Description
Could it be that, 30 years after they formed the vanguard of the American social revolution, the "hippies" of the 1960s can offer sage advice on the looming Y2K computer bug crisis?
In this authoritative handbook, "The Hippy Survival Guide to Y2K," author Mike Oehler says yes, they can. He's a '60s hippy who holds dear the philosophies that led him to a self-sufficient, back-to-the-land life in rural Idaho. In a readable and anecdotal style, supported by exhaustive research, Mike explores the possibility that on January 1, 2000, a simple programming error will cause disastrous computer crashes around the world.
With a focus on strategies for surviving the disruption of social services, Mike has packed this book with information on how to: Get clean water if water systems fail, stay warm in January if the heat goes off, find free food at any time in the city or country, find the safest places to live, build a shelter that will take you through anything, and much more.
Oehler applies his own years of experience to this highly readable handbook for Y2K survival - served up with his philosophy about the improvement of modern society. The good news behind Y2K, whether it proves to be a tragedy or merely a tempest in a teapot, is that it may cause many of us to live our lives more deliberately and independently.
The Year 2000 is coming. The time to think about "what if?" is now, with this practical and thought-provoking guide.

Eye-opening but still interesting to read.......1999-08-21
I was ready to dust off the whole Y2K thing as just another media-inflated non-event. The best thing about The Hippy Survival Guide is the first half of the book in which the author convincingly makes the case that there are indeed big problems pending. He does this in a narrative of his own experiences in trying to wake up his small town to the possible problems that may come on Jan. 1. (Incredibly, he manages to make this amusing.) The balance of the book contains excellent information on self-sufficient living (wrought from his years living a back-to-the-land lifestyle) plus appendices for more information. If you are a skeptic about the whole Y2K thing, you should read this book. Even if you're not convinced at the end of it, you'll have fun reading it.
One of the best (and definitely the most fun) books on Y2K.......1999-04-04
Really I'd give this one four-and-a-half stars if this review form would let me... but I decided to "round up." I like the way the author used a first-person narrative to tell his own experiences of a year-long period to discuss and explore the possible consequences of the Y2K bug. He does a good job of making the case for possible severe disruptions and the need to take some practical measures to be prepared. Lots of good information on how to prepare, plus an excellent appendix of resources for more information, websites, books, food and homesteading supplies. Oehler sounds to be a real "back to the land hippy" who has been living a self-sufficient life since the 60s. His humor and philosophy towards society (although I did not buy off on all of it) are what make the book fun to read.
Well-researched,what may happen; authoritative, what to do........1999-03-07
The book grabbed me from the introduction on. Self-sufficient homesteader hippy sans television and computer opens a piece of mail that alerts him to potential world-wide collapse of electronic-based civilization. He thoroughly researches the question, adds solid suggestions for urban, suburban and rural survival(which work in any emergency), caps it with his own philosophy about the survival of mankind. It may be the most important book I've read, not to mention the most gripping. Randi Somers, Homer Alaska

"When the clock strikes midnight on December 31, 1999, will you be ready?" Michael S. Hyatt believes that when the millennium comes, it's going to pack a wallop. He detailed the specifics of the Y2K computer problem in his bestselling book The Millennium Bug, which stirred up tremendous attention and discussion from people wondering how bad it's really going to be. To address this issue, The Y2K Personal Survival Guide offers contingency plans for whether the effects of Y2K last three days or a year. Organized in five sections: Information, Supplies, Shelter, Money, and Protection, the Survival Guide offers resource suggestions and tips on everything from how to rotate canned goods and stockpile food to securing an alternative source of heat. Much of this information would be helpful during any winter storm, but Hyatt is convinced that we are in for a major change of lifestyle, and his suggestions also include which items will be useful as barter fare once the monetary system has collapsed. Hyatt is serious about preparing people for the worst, even if it never comes to pass. Extremism aside, The Y2K Personal Survival Guide has plenty of helpful checklists and appendices, like "Where to Stash Your Cash and Other Valuables," to help you feel prepared for whatever the new year might bring. --Jodie Buller
Book Description
Most consumers are quickly becoming aware of what the millennium bug is and how it threatens their way of life. With increasing press coverage--most of it negative--many are becoming worried. Some are panicking. Unfortunately, consumers have very little influence over whether or not government agencies, infrastructure providers, or businesses get their computers repaired in time. However, this does not mean they have to become victims. It does mean that they have to become proactive and engage in personal contingency planning. This book shows them how, one step at a time.
Customer Reviews:
Collector's Item.......2000-12-02
After the big Y2K threat became a "non-event" I almost threw this book on the trash heap. Then I realized that it could well be a collector's item one day. There is some sound advice for dealing with natural disasters, planning for record storage, and general common sense practices that are still worth taking a look at now that we are not in a panic mode. Can you imagine if you found a book in your attic entitled "How to Survive the Coming Great Depression" that had belonged to your great grandparents? It would be priceless. This is going into my attic for my grandchildren to dig out someday.
...and for Hyatt's next book, Meteors!.......2000-04-03
Hysteria and a dose of air time on CSPAN has made Mr. Hyatt the prophet of doom for the great un-happening of the millenium! Imagine all those people hunkered down on New Year's Eve expecting planes to drop out of the sky and ATMs to die, and you have the makings of a great parody. Hyatt's next big project is going to have intergalatic consequences to match the sales rate of this book. The scenarios greatly underestimated the strength of the global infrastructure and painted an alarmist view. I only hope Mike Hyatt stays true to his chapters on Christianity and tithes the loyalties from this alarmist book so the truly deplorable aspects of U.S. society such as undernourished children and the low education level in the "have not" states is at least impacted by this book. In the end if Mr. Hyatt really wants to make a difference in the U.S. write on the digital divide and use CSPAN time to change the priorities for the 3rd world poverty pockets we have here in the U.S.
move it to humor section!.......2000-01-08
This book is absolutely hilarious! I don't know whether Hyatt really intended to write a parody, but nonetheless he succeeded brilliantly in doing so.
Well researched and clarified explaination........1999-07-12
Mr. Hyatt provides great insight into his view of the Y2K crisis. Being involved and talking to people in the tech field I feel that the crisis is not as dramatic as it is being brought out. Mr. Hyatt put in great effort in research and correspondence before putting his thoughts and opinions into print. I feel that it is important to keep hard copy documentation on contracts and statements which is stated in his book but I do feel like he is going to extremes in stating that we need to learn survivalist techniques. Also how could we possibly learn and buy everything we need to survive the crisis in span of a few short months. Anyway the book is very interesting even though I think it is a little dramatic.
A "must have" for those who want ideas about how to prepare........1999-06-20
One of the best books I've seen for those who want to do something to get ready. Whether you're already convinced and looking for direction, or still considering the issue and want to know more about what you might want to do, this book will help you make the necessary decisions. No one knows for sure what will happen come Jan 1 2000. But just like no one knows they will have a car accident in the next month, they still buy insurance, just in case. Think of taking the steps outlined in this book as your "lifestyle insurance", just in case there are problems. If you're looking for suggestions about how to make sure you aren't caught unprepared IF problems occur because of Y2K, this is the book for you. If you go about it the right way, many of your "preparations" will not be wasted, even if Y2K is only the bump in the road that many suggest. You can do much of what Mr. Hyatt is suggesting for less than what you are probably paying for your annual auto insurance. If you are still undecided doing something, read the book and realize it's not as tough as you thought to make at least some minimum preparations. If you don't know where to get started or what things to consider, this book is an excellent beginning place. If you're already convinced, this book helps you organize the steps you take. One final thought. With only a little over 6 months to go, and having been hearing about this issue for at least 2 years now, ask yourself honestly "at this late date, how much of the technology that I rely on is considered '100% ready to go', how much is 'still being worked on', and what kind of faith do I have that it will be finished in time?". Following Mr. Hyatt's suggestions will return some of the control over this issue to you - putting you in a better position if there are problems. Send a copy to those you care about - they'll appreciate it too. Don't delay!

Customer Reviews:
Good section on food prep.......2001-12-11
This book, even though geared for Y2K type expected disaster, still has many useful tips for emergency preparedness. I found the food prep and storage section particularly useful. Also it had an excellent section on waste disposal which is often overlooked in other emergency preparedness books. Small and portable enough to take with you.
Cooking Up The Next Millennium.......1999-12-09
The Y2K Survival Guide and Cookbook (Ecovillage, TN) by Dorothy R. and Albert K. Bates is not your usual recipe collection. With the savvy of environmentalists ad the frenzy of those expecting emergency, Dorothy and Albert Bates cover every area of survival and food preparation. Expecting the worst case scenario - rolling brownouts and total black outs, failed utility systems and water purification problems - this book provides natural alternatives: food storage, chlorine bleach to purify water, using wood stoves, building your own composting toilet, and gardening. There are even first aid and Morse code directions in the final pages. After coping with any Y2K calamities, it's time to cook. In between survival guidelines, the Bates' book is filled with hearty recipes reminiscent of campfire food. As computers buzz blank, you can enjoy split pea soup from melted icicles, marmalades from sun-dried fruit, or shiitake joes from home-grown mushrooms. Even though The Y2K Survival Guide and Cookbook is intended for the millennium-minded cook, it is an eccentric volume any eco-conscious chef should add to their library.
A Treasure of a Book.......1999-07-28
In addition to the recipes and food tips that could keep a diverse group of survivors happy for years (who wants plain ol' Chili gets that, and who prefers dishes like Rice Noodle Pad Thai will be satisfied also), there is an excellent overview of food storage techniques that includes charts I've never before seen on the shelf life of edibles, from an individually wrapped apple to nuts in airtight packages.
While Dorothy and Albert have given us lists, lists, and more lists to follow and yet others to create lists of our own, throughout their little treasure of a book is a taste of the loving, compassionate sensibility without which any attempt to survive is bound to be futile.
Loved it!.......1999-06-03
I loved the wood cookstove on page 37. I immediately wanted one
Worth the price of admission........1999-06-03
Whether you plan to greet the New Year 2000 with a glass of champagne or by drying fruit, the Bates book makes good reading. Its lists of resources, right-minded catalogs and progressive Web sites alone are worth the price of admission.

Everything you need to know to prepare yourself for collapse.......2000-02-03
Y2K is gonna be here any second now. Remember, folks, just because nothing happened doesn't mean that nothing is gonna happen. Ed Yourdon is a bona-fide computer expert, not just some formerly-respected expert who gave up all semblences of respectability and credability in the aim of getting his name on the lips of every preparedness wacko on shortwave!
By the way, does anyone wanna buy 500 cans of spam?
Brilliant! Awaiting the sequel!.......2000-01-17
For the title of your sequel, I suggest "the rise and resurrection of the Y2K bug"
Save You money - you need common sense.......1999-11-27
This book really disappointed me it really did'nt have anything that jumped out at me, that made me say "O - I forgot about this" maybe because I'm a SysAdmin I might be more up to date than most. If your lacking common sense then buy this book, but with 30 days or so till 2000 its almost a mute point now.
Should have left the word 'complete' out of the title.......1999-05-20
This companion book to 'Time Bomb 2000' was somewhat disappointing. Right in the introduction, there is a chart of things to do 'on New Years Eve day (or before)'. According to 'Time Bomb 2000', some of these things might not be possible by then.
Each chapter deals with a major issues such as food, water or light. The comparisons of the options are good as are the storage hints, but quantitization (how much to get) is often glossed over. The checklists are useful to avoid forgetting something, but are not the most practical means to monitor your state of preparation.
The section on Money and Finances is particularly superficial.
The lists of books and web sites are just lists, and of limited usefulness. The videos section does have a brief blurb about each video. There is also a list of Y2K community groups which might be of use if you happen to be located nearby any listed.
If you have a large Y2K library, this might be a useful element of your library. If you are looking for 'one' book on preparation, this is probably not it.

What a great and on-target book.......2003-11-10
Wow, I guess that 3 years after the fact, I really should start preparing for all of the chaos that will come with Y2K. Thank goodness I found this book. I will be sure to put all of these tips to good use. And now, I am crawling into my cave and getting ready. Wake me when it's over.
The most helpful Y2k preparedness book out there........1999-08-23
Finally, a book written specifically for those of us who live in the city (that's 70% of us)! We have amassed quite a survival library, but we find the information in this book to be the simplest, most accurate and the most helpful. I took it with me to a preparedness specialty store and even the owner was surprised by how many questions which he couldn't previously answer were dealt with in this book. It will help you become the most prepared in the shortest time possible.
A good source of basic information........1999-04-16
This book is a helpful source of information for those just starting to prepare for the coming of the new millenium. GOOD LUCK!
A "must read" for you and your family........1999-04-11
I'm really impressed. This book, How To Survive Y2k Chaos In The City, is a gold mine of useful, practical, common-sense information. It provides a sane, rational approach to your emergency preparations. This book has exceeded my expectations. I also applaud the authors because they don't use any of the fear tactics that many do, but instead give some very thought provoking reasons why we should be prudent in our approach to Y2k.
A very good book but unfortunately lacks some information........1999-04-04
The information in this book is very good, but I was disappointed not to find info on certain topics like: RADIO COMMUNICATION ("walkie- talkies" and Short Wave radios); SOLAR PANELS (the kits that are best to power small electronical devices and recharge nickel-cadmium batteries); BASIC FIRST AID; and--I hate to think of it--GUNS.
Luckily, they do have a web site that is supposed to be updated regularly.
