There's still a lot to learn about the healing power of plants, James Duke points out, but what we do know is already prodigious. Much of that knowledge is gathered in The Green Pharmacy, an A-to-Z guide to that relies on plant-based medicines to cure what ails us. Between the listings, Duke crams personal anecdotes from a lifetime of studying herbs, berries, and bark. For example, he relates how he worried about telling a pregnant niece that ginger could help alleviate her morning sickness because he'd learned from a pharmacologist that ginger could also induce miscarriage. Then he solved the mystery: he'd recommended ginger tea, which contains about 250 milligrams of ginger. The Chinese, he learned, use about 80 times that much to end pregnancies--another testimony to the amazing versatility of these natural medicines.

Book Description

The Green PharmacyMany diseased and conditions for which we turn to modern medicine can also be treated naturally with healing herbs, medicinal food, other natural remedies--and these treatments can be safer, less expensive and possibly even more effective than traditional methods. Let Dr. James Duke, the world's leading authority on healing herbs, leads you through the vast world of natural remedies--from Anise for Asthma to Violet for Varicose Veins, and everything in between. With just a few trips to the health-food store, the supermarket, or your own backyard--and with the help of Dr. Duke--you'll have everything you need to create your own Natural Medicine Cabinet.

1 out of 5 stars This book is lame...........................2007-10-22

I bought this book based on other people's recommendation of this book. I was disappointed and the lesson I have learned was not to buy a book other the internet without having a chance to flip through it. The print is large so there isn't much ailments covered. If you want an herbal pharmacy guide, I would go with something else. This is basically an "herbs for dummies" book, not a book with real solutions. DON'T BUY. I want my money back..

5 out of 5 stars James Duke Rocks!.......2007-09-23

I really enjoy this author and his no nonsense approach to herbalism.

He is very real and thorough in his writings. He shares stories and things to help set the image in your mind on what helps or does not help certain situations.

Excellent Information

5 out of 5 stars User friendly and packed with wisdom.......2007-06-10

This guide to herbalism and healing is simply wonderful. I highly recommend it to anyone who is searching for holistic and natural methods to dealing with medical problems. The ability to search by ailment or useful herb is very nice. A must for any naturalists bookshelf.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent natural remedy book!.......2007-04-16

This book has a lot of useful information about natural remedies and even how to make herbal tea yourself.

Illnesses are listed in alphabetical order with recommended natural remedies.
The Index has herbs etc..listed also in alphabetical order with page numbers for location.

Dr. Duke does provide words of caution where he feels it is neccessary.

I recommend this book. The price is very affordable and the book has an extensive list of natural remedies. This book is also very well organised.

5 out of 5 stars complete herbal.......2007-03-08

This is the best book I could find and read concerning the herbal concoctions on the market today, but, make sure you get this book, not one of the many so named "green" books, there are many books out on this subject and some are very very similarily named. This book has almost all of the herbs listed and uses for them.I highly recommend it to herbal health persons.

The pictures for each step are very detailed and each hairstyle is very unique. My only problem was that there was very limited written instruction to go with each picture step. Other then that, a great book.

3 out of 5 stars I can't believe this book costs $15.00.......2006-11-18

As a new law student, I was really intimidated by the Bluebook. But I gotta tell you, after getting the "The User's Guide to Bluebook" three months after law school, I am really starting to feel that I have been tricked out of my money. It is nothing more than 15 sheets stapled together and as one of the reviewers said before me "this book is truely for the bluebook clueless." If you have even the slightest clue of how to use the bluebook, forget this waste of money. But I have to admit, we did spend 15 minutes in class on it, so if you didn't get that much in class, then it might be a good idea.

5 out of 5 stars The Guide was very helpful.......2005-05-16

Since the Bluebook is a complicated reference book, it is difficult to learn how to use it by reading it. Dworsky's little book gave me the foundation I needed to understand the Bluebook. It is no longer a mystery to me!

3 out of 5 stars Bluebook, italics, and underlining.......2001-09-06

I agree with the previous reviewers concerning this book. The issue of italics vs. underlining may be controversial, but I think most courts and most attorneys favor underlining; I know I do. In fax transmissions, underlining shows up much better. Also, underlined cases and emphases are much easier to spot when reading a legal brief or memorandum.

4 out of 5 stars I was one of the "clueless".......2000-10-08

With all due respect to my colleague from Minnesota, this little book was a lifesaver for me.

My only exposure to the blue book was a dismissive 5 minute tour by a bored second-year student who was supposed to be a pillar of strength during for our "Lawyering Process" class. Had I not discovered this book, I would have been on a suicide watch that first semester of law school.

This book is small and ungodly expensive - it's also one of my most cherished possessions.

Dan Lobnitz - University of Denver College of Law - (2L)

3 out of 5 stars For those to whom the bluebook remains a mystery.......2000-06-04

I agree with the comments of the reviewer below pertaining to italics over underlining. See infra review of Thomas Blackwell. However, this book will not be very helpful to most users of the bluebook. The book is very, very brief and contains nothing not contained in the bluebook itself. Further, the index of the bluebook allows easy location of the applicable rules for even the most obscure of situations. This very short book merely reiterates that which is already contained in the bluebook, I would only recommend this book to the truly bluebook clueless.

As we all know, these people who write these books are'nt going to share every secret of the industry, but this book will bring you closer to those well hidden secrets. I have never bought a book that was so detailed in every aspect from hygiene, nails, hair braiding, weaving, cutting, and styling. I was very much so satisfied with the photos, illustrations, and information given in this book. Its is in fact all worth every penny.

5 out of 5 stars Very good book for relaxed heads........2002-05-15

I have read many hair care books and this one is the best for relaxed hair. It is a text book. It has great pictures and step by step instructions. If you want to know how to wrap, fingerwave, make a basic roll, how to apply a relaxer, color etc, this book is for you. Better than a hair care magazine that shows mostly weaved hair. I'm a natural curly girl but I don't have a problem with healthy relaxed hair.

5 out of 5 stars THE book to start with on Breast Cancer.......2005-04-30

This book has helped so many people I know when they found out that they or someone they loved had breast cancer.
Since this book has come out, Dr. Mary Tagliaferri and Isaac Cohen have been doing impressive work at Bionovo (http://www.bionovo.com) to discover and develop new drugs for cancer and women's health. I have heard that they will be publishing a book about menopause that uses the same format as this book soon. What a useful book!

5 out of 5 stars An invaluable guide for BREAST HEALTH as well as cancer.......2002-11-11

After my diagnosis, I waded through shelves of library books on alternative health/breast cancer/healing options in order to find some of the information in this succinct literate volume. This anthology by complementary and alternative medical experts addresses both scientific and spiritual approaches for living with breast cancer. A road map to help with diagnosis, surgery, and after care . Excellent website directory.

5 out of 5 stars Reading this book is like having a wise friend by your side.......2002-06-11

This is a book is about integrative medicine, the emerging field of medicine that attempts to integrate the best therapies from both Western medicine and from non-conventional practices.

As Dr. Dean Ornish points out in his forword, the authors of the fifteen books chapters are striving to build bridges between the two worlds. They have all made profound contributions of their own to the medical community, and the expertise they share in this book may help provide patients with new hope and new choices. There is a great richness of material here, covering many perspectives:

Mainstream physicians such as famed breast cancer experts Susan Love and Debu Tripathy share their experiences and how they came to understand that they had to open their minds and look beyond the traditional boundaries of medicine. Bestselling authors Rachel Naomi Remen, John Kabat Zinn and Michael Lerner share their experiences with the mysterious powers of the mind and heart in the healing process. The role of diet is addressed in chapters by lead editor Mary Tagliaferri and by Larry Kushi. Chinese Medicine, Herbs, Supplements and other natural products are treated in several chapters. Controversial subjects such as distant healing are being explored, and the role of support groups in the well-being of cancer patients is analyzed. There is a portrait of a clinic that has become "a healing place for low-income women", and even tips on how to evaluate health information on the internet.

No one book can cover all the possible alternative and complementary therapies that are being used by breast cancer patients. But one would hope that these thoughtful essays will inspire many more physicians and alternative medicine practitioners to build bridges between their worlds and explore the possibilities of collaboration with open minds and hearts.

2 out of 5 stars Not what I expected for the price! .......2005-04-26

I am a hairdresser that specializes in weddings and I was very disappointed in this book. When I purchased it there were no reviews, unfortunately. It was beautifully put together but the hairstyles were really unflattering and unattractive. There were hardly any I would even show to a bride as a potential, they were too out of date. The instructions were not detailed enough for a beginning hairstylist (I'm assuming that was the target reader group). I would recommend Martin Parson's "Hairdreams" instead of this. Although you can tell the authors worked hard to make this a lovely book, they took some serious wrong turns in the hairstyle picks and instructions. I wouldn't be so harsh if this book wasn't so expensive!

2 out of 5 stars Beautful Cover Deceives You..........2004-12-23

I expected the whole book to be about hair and have a wealth of hair styles. I really didn't need all the advice the first part of the book gives. I also expected the book to have more updated styles. This book would definately look pretty on your salon reception table and would appeal to a novice. But someone who is doing bridal hair now might not find this book helpful. If the cost was less, the book might be worth keeping.

3 out of 5 stars Handy for some, not for others.......2001-12-19

I bought this book not knowing exactly what was in it. I have short hair that I'm growing out, but of the 38 hairstyles featured, only 3 were appropriate for my length. On the other hand, if you're looking for ideas for hairstyles beyond the typical chignon, half-ony-tail, etc., this is a great book. It's even good for do-it-yourselfers who are looking for something creative to do, but not looking to go to a salon to get it. Well worth the money if you're looking for any of the above and you have shoulder length or longer hair.

      Book Description

More than six million Americans—most of them women—have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS), a disorder that produces musculo-skeletal pain and fatigue. In the absence of visible evidence, a well-understood cause, or effective treatment, many have questioned whether FMS is a "real" illness. Amidst the controversy, millions of women live with their very real symptoms.

Rather than taking sides in the heated debate, Kristin Barker explains how FMS represents an awkward union between the practices of modern medicine and the complexity of women's pain. Using interviews with sufferers, Barker focuses on how the idea of FMS gives meaning and order to women beset by troubling symptoms, self-doubt, and public skepticism.

This book offers a fresh look at a controversial diagnosis; Barker avoids overly simplistic explanations and empathizes with sufferers without losing sight of the social construction of disease and its relation to modern medical practice.

5 out of 5 stars Fibromyalgia patients and their doctors: toward understanding each other........2006-01-12

Now that I am retired from 35 years as a medical doctor (Internal Medicine), I often reflect on what people believe about medicine and illness, and the process by which those beliefs change. As I approached the final years of my career I sought relief from the responsibilities of primary care by limiting my work to disability examinations on those seeking benefits from the Social Security Administration or workers compensation insurers. It was here that I finally found time, free from other distractions, to listen at length to the stories of individuals with diagnoses of fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, Gulf War syndrome, multiple chemical sensitivity, and other problems loosely termed "functional somatic syndromes" in the medical literature. I also examined them and reviewed voluminous medical records. Dr. Barker's account of the subjective experiences of the individuals she interviewed for this book resonates with, and makes clearer, the stories that I heard and described in my reports.

In my earlier medical practice, individuals with these problems were difficult and often frustrating to care for because their needs were so great and there seemed so little to offer them from available conventional treatments. On occasion, attempts to relieve their discomfort with pain medications led to substance abuse. One faces the task of distinguishing from among persons with broad arrays of somatic symptoms those individuals who have occult organic illnesses of a more immediately threatening nature, such as cancer or multiple sclerosis. The physician must also be alert for complicating psychiatric problems and for those who simulate symptoms to achieve secondary gain. But once these other problems are excluded by medical investigation, it does not mean that "nothing is wrong," as fibromyalgia patients are often led to believe. Their testimony is often the most significant evidence of their illness, since objectively verifiable signs (verifiable by the examiner, of course) are usually lacking or inconclusive.

My educational background prior to my medical training was in engineering. Needless to say, I lacked any exposure to sociology, much less to the concept that illnesses are in part "socially constructed." I recognize now that this was not a trivial deficiency. I highly recommend this book for primary care physicians, rheumatologists, physiatrists, neurologists, and other "evidence-based" specialists likely to care for individuals with fibromyalgia. It should assist health care providers to interact not only with fibromyalgia patients, but with all sufferers from whatever cause, in a more constructive and empathetic way. Fibromyalgia sufferers will gain a more in-depth understanding of their illness, and should find themselves on stronger ground to understand and communicate with their doctors.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Scholarly Examination of the Social Construction of Medical Authority.......2005-07-22

This is a highly recommended book, mostly due to its aggressive and thorough examination of FMS as a prime example of the power bestowed to medical authority in Western culture. Whether you believe FMS exists or not, you should buy and read this book.

The social construction of reality is a pervasive and powerful concept that shapes every individual's existence--this book provides excellent scholarly analysis of one prime example of the disconnect between individuals' perceptions of reality, while simultaneously illustrating how medicine (and more generally, "scientific knowledge"), even when unable to produce the evidence necessary by its own standards to be unequivocal on an issue, trumps the experienced reality of millions.

The theoretical position outlined in this book, backed up with solid historical evidence and extensive interviews, is easily extrapolated to other medical "conditions," daily occurences, gender and cultural roles, wars in the middle east for oil, etc.--I hope that as many people as possible are able to get a copy of this book and mull over the propositions.

      Awesome work Dr. Kristin Barker.
