Book Description

Fundamental to understanding human sexual expression is reliable and valid measurement and assessment. Many instruments have been developed to measure a myriad of sexuality-related states, traits, behaviors, and outcomes. Few are easily accessible and the information is limited concerning appropriate use and psychometric properties. In Handbook of Sexuality-Related Measures, more than 200 instruments are reproduced, accompanied by the necessary information for their use in research, as well as educational and clinical settings. Measures relating to more than 50 topics are included. Examples are abortion, aging, arousal, general and specific attitudes and behavior, contraception, dysfunctions, education, experience, gender identity, homosexuality, ideology, jealousy, knowledge, masturbation, orgasm, rape, and sexually transmitted diseases. Each chapter describes the development and appropriate use of each instrument, giving information on timing, scoring, and interpretation. Reliability and validity data are summarized and completely referenced. Nearly all articles include the entire instrument; others provide illustrative content from the instrument and give all necessary information to obtain the instrument.

5 out of 5 stars A Sex Researcher's Dream Come True..........2001-10-18

The Handbook of Sexuality-Related Measures is the definitive, mammoth book of sex surveys and questionnaires.

This book is a wonderful resource for social scientists and clinicians interested in assessing various aspects of sexuality using quantitative measures. The editors have done an excellent job compiling a wealth of instruments and have reported important information such as the reliability and validity of each measure, as well as copyrights and contact information of the authors/publishers of each measure. An incredibly broad range of areas of study is covered, often with more than one measure for each topic area. Greatly expanded and improved from the previous edition, it's an essential addition to any sexologist's library.

5 out of 5 stars Of great utility for research in sexology.......2000-03-13

This book covers a large variety of subjects and is extremely helpful for sexological research, regarding both the general population and specific sub-populations.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent tool for Social Scientists.......1999-11-11

Anyone with a comprehensive understanding of social sciences and anyone who is interested in doing research on human sexuality-this is an excellent tool. This book contains important and valid measures that do NOT in anyway support, condone, or justify sexual deviance like sex with animals or children. The tests in this book aim to measure aspects of sexuality.

The authors attempt to remove the stigma of certain pedophilia related actions by arguing that there is such a thing as consensual sex with minors. Trash.

    Book Description

Dramatic societal changes have reshaped America’s families. Young adults have delayed marriage, and cohabitation before marriage has become commonplace. One in three women giving birth is unmarried, and the proportion of children under 18 living in single-parent families rose from 23 to 31 percent between 1980 and 2000, reflecting increased rates of both nonmarital childbearing and divorce.

This authoritative volume offers a blueprint for addressing some of the most important measurement issues in family research, and it points out potential pitfalls for researchers and students who may not be familiar with data quality issues.

The Handbook of Measurement Issues in Family Research will appeal to scholars in the departments of psychology, sociology, and population studies, as well as researchers working in governmental agencies.

      Book Description

Over the past two decades, the epidemic of HIV/AIDS has challenged the public health community to fundamentally rethink the framework for preventing infectious diseases. While much progress has been made on the biomedical front in treatments for HIV infection, prevention still relies on behaviour change. This book documents and explains the remarkable breakthroughs in behavioural research design that have emerged to confront this new challenge: the study of partnership networks. Traditionally, public health research focused on the "knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP)" of individuals, an approach designed for understanding health-related behaviour like seat-belt wearing and cigarette smoking. For HIV and other sexually transmitted infections, however, there are at least two people involved in transmission. This may not seem like a big difference, but in fact it changes everything. First, it means that your risk depends on your partners -- and on their partners, and their partners: it depends on your position in the network of partnerships. Consider, for example, the rise of infections among monogamous women. Second, it means that individuals are not free to simply change their behaviour -- condom use, or abstinence, needs to be negotiated with a partner. both the epidemiology of risk and constraints to behaviour are therefore a function of the partnership network. And our ability to design effective prevention strategies depends on our ability to measure and summarize that network. Using the traditional research designs, you would not see this network at all -- you would only see the unconnected nodes. They key to solving this problem lies in Network Analysis, before now a relatively obscure subfield in Sociology. For empirical studies of networks to become feasible, however, many problems had to be solved. This book documents the rapid progress that has been made. It brings together eight pioneering studies that have sought to map the networks that spread infection around the world. Each chapter reviews the questions that drove the study, the changes in methodology that were needed to implement the network survey, the mistakes and successes encountered, and the central findings that the network design made possible. An introduction provides an overview of network survey design, a glossary provides a summary of network terminology, and example questionnaires from each study provide a template for further research. This is a unique and valuable resource for the international public health research community.

          Book Description

Interest and attention to entrepreneurship has exploded in recent years. Yet, much of the research and scholarship has remained elusive to academics, policymakers and other researchers. This reflects two crucial aspects of the entrepreneurship literature. First has been the explosion of new findings and insights, both theoretically and empirically. Second, most of this scholarship has been rooted in traditional academic disciplines, spanning a broad spectrum of fields such as management, finance, economics, sociology and psychology. The purpose of the Handbook of Entrepreneurship is to bring together leading scholars from each of these disciplines to provide an overview of what the issues are for entrepreneurship when viewed through the lens provided by the academic disciplines as well as a synthesis about what has been learned and what questions should be high on the agenda for future research. Taken together, this Handbook will provide a roadmap to an emerging complex but intriguing field of entrepreneurship.

              Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars LIES, DAMN LIES AND STATISTICS (Winston Churchill).......2007-10-02

Before reading this book, first read How to Lie With Statistics especially if you believe you know Huff's little classic off-by-heart...and consider Winston Churchill's wisecrack to be a casual one-liner after the port.

This book, in the hands of a cocky, computer-literate software adept who has not been drilled in the pitfalls of 'stats' stripped of data delusions, is a real danger to society.

Any guide to research of any kind that hands out STATISTICA software Applied Statistics Using SPSS, STATISTICA, MATLAB and R without very, very elaborate precautions about the dangers of clicking your way to significance tests for foot-notes - that you have not been taught to understand in full measure, might be called negligent.

" This book, if used before perusing Huff, could lead to statistical insanity." is what the cover flash should say. As a toolkit containing mind-threatening implements without adequate warning as to how, why, when and what to use them for, the publisher is doing no one a favour. If an extended, heartfelt new edition emerges with a strong precautionary prelude (written by Huff or by a respected Huff-ian), we at One Big Idea Consulting Limited NZ could then recommend it to clients with an easy mind... not otherwise.

2 out of 5 stars Not that great if you are looking for concise information.......2003-08-05

I was surprised to find that this is almost a guidebook for university professors, rather than an information-packed how-to guide. There is more information on how to run the class than there is on how to execute meaningful market research. I regret spending the $$ on this particular book.

4 out of 5 stars Useful for high end users........2002-07-07

This is a valuable book for those more complex research and survey problems and thinking your way towards a solution.

It assumes a reasonable existing skill and you can make the most out of it by having those skills already.

It is not ready made answers, rather more useful hints and ideas that you can use to sort things out yourself.

4 out of 5 stars Cookbook for Marketing Research.......2000-08-30

Glen Jarboe's The Marketing Research Project Manual, 4th edition, is outstanding for its step-by-step presentation. The manual is convenient to marketing research students for its tear sheets and valuable tips on doing a research project. It is like a cookbook for marketing research. The steps and forms are easy to follow and prove to be very beneficial, as a college student.
