Climbing Mount Everest: dangerous. Hitchhiking in Colombia: very dangerous. Leading through change: perilous. Perilous but possible, say Heifetz and Linsky in their encouragingly practical guide to putting yourself on the line and negotiating the hazards of leadership. As the authors acknowledge, many leadership books are "all about inspiration, but downplay the perspiration." This one doesn't. Leadership is always a risky business, but those risks can be understood and reduced. Effective leadership comes from doing more than the technical work of routine management; it involves adaptive work on the part of the leader, and a willingness to confront and disturb people, promote their resourcefulness, and engage their ability to adjust to new realities. But adaptive change always encounters resistance. Heifetz and Linsky examine four forms of resistance--marginalization, diversion, attack, and seduction--before presenting a number of practical resistance-response skills to nurture and employ. Some are fairly obvious (like developing and maintaining perspective, and holding steady in the midst of change), and others more complex (like thinking politically when dealing with friends, foes, and fence sitters), but shimmering nuggets of insight and practical wisdom can be found in each. The dangers of leadership also spring from within, however, and the book's final section addresses ways to recognize and manage competing "hungers" and learn to distinguish one's roles from one's self. The authors' points are illustrated by the experiences of leaders from all walks of life, making this a useful and inspiring manual for anyone hoping to put themselves on the line and make a difference in the lives of others. --S. Ketchum
Book Description
Every day, in every facet of our lives, opportunities to lead call out to us. At work and at home, in our local communities and in the global village, the chance to make a difference beckons. Yet often, we hesitate. For all its passion and promise, for all its excitement and rewards, leading is risky, dangerous work.
Why? Because real leadership-the kind that surfaces conflict, challenges long-held beliefs, and demands new ways of doing things-causes pain. And when people feel threatened, they take aim at the person pushing for change. As a result, leaders often get hurt both personally and professionally.
In Leadership on the Line, renowned leadership authorities Ronald A. Heifetz and Marty Linsky marshal a half century of combined teaching and consulting experience to show that it is possible to put ourselves on the line, respond effectively to the risks, and live to celebrate our efforts. With compelling examples including the presidents of countries and the presidents of organizations, everyday managers and prominent activists, politicians and parents, the authors illustrate proven strategies for surviving and thriving amidst the dangers of leading:
· "Getting on the balcony": stepping back to get perspective while remaining fiercely engaged
· "Thinking politically": keeping the opposition close, but watching your allies, too
· "Orchestrating the conflict": using stress productively to work the issues
· "Giving the work back": putting the responsibility on those who need to make the change
· "Holding steady": maintaining your focus while taking the heat
The authors also address often-neglected aspects of leadership, such as how to manage your personal vulnerabilities, and how to anchor yourself and sustain your spirit through tough times.
Both uplifting and practical, this essential book enables each of us to lead courageously and confidently-without losing ourselves.

Not a bad choice!!.......2007-10-01
This book is an easy read. It does have some real practical ways that its "messages" can be used by leaders. There are many quality quotes and ideas that can be put into place ASAP in your organization.
Leadership on the Line.......2007-09-13
I found the book insightful and enjoyable to read. It gave options for handling business issues that affect a person's leadership credibilty. The examples were clear and related to well known leaders through out history and present day servers of the governnent and service organizations. I would recommend this book to all business people and take charge leaders.
May this book help you survive long enough to do some good.......2007-03-30
Most companies, most organizations are run by managers. They don't really lead to a new and different future, they instead try to manage the business as they found it. Their main concern is this quarter. Next quarter is long range planning. And the quarter after that so far into the future as to not be worth considering.
Perhaps the best examples right now are the American automobile companies. We've known since the first embargo, since the publication of Hubbard's Peak on oil production that we need more efficient cars. So for quarter after quarter they concentrated on full size SUV's and Pickup trucks. Not even a background level effort on getting a hybrid, a 40 mile per gallon car ready to produce.
This book closes with the need for real leaders. We, our country, our world face difficult times requiring fundamental changes in areas like energy, terrorism, global warming and more. We need leaders -- political, religious, and business leaders. As the book ends: 'May you enjoy with a full heart the fruits of your labor. The world needs you.'
Maybe this book can help you survive long enough to do some good.
Solid and earnest advice for passion in leadership.......2006-12-24
"Leadership on the Line: Staying Alive Through the Dangers of Leading" by Ronald A. Heifetz and Marty Linsky is an unconventional leadership book. Forsaking formulas, Heifetz and Linsky explore the human dimensions of leadership. Through numerous examples drawn from their teaching and consulting work, the authors tell the reader - really implore the reader - to appreciate the fullness of leadership and its impact on others.
The authors' examples and personal philosophy is on the liberal-left side, but much of their advice appears solid and earnest. The challenge for any person reading their book is how to put into practice what the authors suggest. I believe that without at least a few people to whom a leader can turn for counsel, the authors' call to leadership greatness will be forgotten not long after finishing the book.
The book's closing paragraph provides a good summary of the preceding 235 pages:
"Opportunities for leadership are available to you, and to us, every day. But putting yourself on the line is difficult work, for the dangers are real. Yet the work has nobility and the benefits, for you and for those around you, are beyond measure. We have written this book out of admiration and respect for you and your passion. We hope that the words on these pages have provided both practical advice and inspiration; and that you have better means now to lead, protect yourself, and keep your spirit alive. May you enjoy with a full heart the fruits of your labor. The world needs you."
Excellent.......2006-11-06
If you are looking for a book on leadership, this is one to add to your collection. I had trouble putting the book down at times. The book is very well written and I would highly suggest it to anyone. If you have read books on leadership before, you will place this one at the top of your list.

Surprise!.......2007-10-20
The book started out really, really slow. Until I got about 1/2 through the book. After that everything feel into place, and the plot took off like a racehorse.
I only slowed down enough to buy the other two books next day delivery. If your tired of your current favorite author give this lady a try. Theres more twists and turns than a rollercoaster.
The author knows how to string you along until you want to scream.
The only problem that I saw was a really slow beginning and when things really go going, it ended too soon..
cant wait to read the next book.......2007-07-22
This book is about a detective named Lily lu. A man is killed by a werewolf, and that mans wife is sleeping with the werewolf prince Rule Turner. When Lily talks to Rule about the murder, Rule know pretty much right away that she is special. For about a second it looks Rule could have done it and gets locked up for a couple of hours. He is proven innocent by Lily she knows someone else did it because she's a sensitive (she can feel magic). It's soon obvious Rule was framed and a couple of cops including Lily's boss might (might) be dirty. Theres two FBI agents in town you don't know if you can trust, and someone in Rule's clan that COULD be a trader. On top of that a colt is trying to bring an evil goddess back. Lily has to solve the murders, figure out who she can trust, and deal with being Rules Chosen (seems to be like a mate but more).
The books a great read.It may get a little complex cause it has a lot going on but it never gets boring. It has great secondary characters that add to the story instead of take away from it. You should try this book but it's definitely not a lite read.
Start of a great series.......2007-05-18
This is the first book in a series by Eileen Wilks. She wrote a novella that appears in Lover Beware that has the same two lead characters but otherwise is a totally different story. If you've read the novella, it is sort of disorienting to read the books in the series. Read them in order. Each book stands alone but the characters are richer when they develop over time. Wilks has a very interesting take on werewolves and has put a lot of thought into the structure of their society. It is a very romantic book. The relationship between Lily and Rule is very realistic. It's not quite your usual they hate each other, they have sex, they're madly in love plot. In this book, they need each other but they're not really sure they can stand to be together. I am really looking forward to the fourth book. One of my favorite things about the series is that the characters are moving from book to book. I always want more of a good character so I enjoy series that feature the same characters in multiple books.
Lily and Rule book 1.......2007-04-05
While waiting for some of my favorite authors to publish new books, I stumbled across "Tempting Danger" by Eileen Wilks. I love the intriguing cover art, and the summary looked promising.
It exceeded my expectations. The story of Detective Lily Yu and werewolf Prince Rule Turner is a fantastic one. When a man ends up dead, and a werewolf is the suspect, its up to Lily Yu to solve the case. (And up to Rule Turner to keep her from pointing fingers in his direction.)
The chemistry between Lily and Rule is definitely there. Eileen Wilks does a fabulous job of creating the tension. I couldn't put it down! Even better, I wasn't able to solve the mystery before Lily or Rule, which gives this book major points. I hate books where I figure out the answers before the main characters. Plus as soon as I finished, I was eager for more. I fully recommend this book, and I'm looking forward to the next in the series.
Next is Mortal Danger (Berkley Sensation) followed by Blood Lines (Berkley Sensation).
Not bad, not brill.......2007-03-26
"Tempting Danger" is the first book I've read by Eileen Wilks and although interesting it didn't entirely hit the spot for me.
Lily Yu is a detective investigating a murder that appears to have been committed by a werewolf. Werewolves (lupi) have only recently been accorded some rights; previously they were hunted and killed by the police. However they are still regarded with suspicion and this death doesn't help. It looks like the prime suspect is Rule Turner, the prince of the local werewolf clan, and Lily goes to interview him. However she soon realises that the murder didn't happen as it seems on the surface and that there is some kind of connection between her and Rule. The more they investigate together the more is uncovered - someone in the police department working against them, suspicions amongst the lupi, mistrust of Lily as she seems close to a lupus, an evil female deity trying to take over the world, that kind of thing.
Although billed as a romance in some ways this book wasn't too romantic - the lead characters don't exactly choose to have their relationship and much more attention is paid to the murder and sorcery plot. It's written fairly well and I liked the characters, particularly Lily's grandmother, and the differences between the lupus and human social mores were interesting, but the overall story wasn't enough to completely carry me away into the plot. The big fight at the end was over surprisingly quickly and that was the only real taste of action in the story - the novel was more focused on investigation and plotting. The magical world it was set in had that slight drawback that too many other urban fantasies seem to have these days - peopling the world with every possible type of non-human creature like werewolves, gnomes, sorcerers, banshees, witches, goddesses and the like; the only thing missing in this story seemed to be vampires. It was a pleasant enough read but not exciting enough to entice me to buy another book by this author.

Still hooked on the Corps.......2007-06-12
I am actually getting sad that I'm nearing the end of this incredible series about the US Marine Corps. Griffin's characters continue to captivate, and he always introduces new ones that you hope to see more of in the future. In this case a Chief Petty Officer called McGuire is one that I certainly want to hear more of. This book takes McCoy and Zimmerman into the Gobi Desert on a very dangerous mission that has a two-fold goal - one to establish a permanent weather station in the Gobi, and the other to rescue a band of US people who have been trying to get out of Japanese held spots in China. We get to see all the planning and preparation work carried out by Flem Pickering's men as they plan this incredibly dangerous mission again behind enemy lines. Griffin's descriptions of the unforgiving Gobi Desert are also unforgettable. What a barren land this must be. Anyway, the book kept me going right from the beginning. I love Griffin's writing style.
The incredibe journey continues.......2007-02-10
This series is the best one I think I have ever read. With characters that have been developed in earlier books coming back in the series with a little back story for those who have not read the previous books. All books in the series can stand on their own, but read in order, they tell an incredible tale. I am always checking to see when the next book will be available and preorder it the day I see it. I devour them, they are so well written and interesting, worthwhile reading.
In Dangers Path.......2006-11-10
The Corps series is one of the best series I have read. I can't wait for him to come out with the next book.
"IN DANGERS PATH".......2005-09-21
This one of my favorite "Corps" books by WEBG. I have read several of the reviews of this book. I find them too nit-picky.
Lighten up! This is fiction!!

Standard W.E.B. Griffin fare.......2004-09-30
Nothing overly special about this book. Griffin stands true the the schitck of his genre, mainly 1) Deflowered Virgins, 2) Rich Playboys in the military service, and 3) Enlisted men who must become officers by the end of the story. If you can deal with that, its no better or worse than the other books in the series.
However, there are serious problems with continuity in this book. Names and events that took place in prior books and are remembered in this one are so inaccurate, I'm seriously starting to suspect that after Book III or so, these things are being ghostwritten.
Customer Reviews:
Entertaining read.......2007-09-11
I couldn't put this one down. I won't review the plot since others have already done so.
Clancy's skill and courage would have seemed ridiculous without her being a veteran of Desert Storm.
This was an excellent book!
Intimate Danger.......2007-09-03
Mike Gannon is a Special Ops soldier who was injured on a mission. While recovering, he finds out that his team has been dispatched to the Peruvian jungles to find a top secret and deadly weapon. However, no one has heard from them since. Soldier first and foremost, Mike doesn't care how injured he is, he is going to find his comrades and either rescue them or bring their bodies home. There is just one thing standing in his way, and she is red headed and a spitfire.
Clancy McRae is an inventor and not a happy camper. Told to find a way to make a device to boost the performance of soldiers, Clancy is stunned to find out that what she created was implanted into four Marines without her knowledge. Then, if that isn't bad enough, no one has heard from them since they were sent on a mission to Peru. Knowing the effects of her untried and untested device, Clancy has to find those men - even if she has to go to Peru herself.
Mike does not believe the wacky virago when she first tells him her story. The longer he is around her, the more he believes. Well, and the fact that someone wants her to be silenced...forever.
If you are not a fan of suspense, edgy romance, and complete absorption in a plot, then Intimate Danger is not for you. If you are, then grab a drink, sit back, and immerse yourself in this delightful addition to any bookshelf. Intimate Danger kept me on pins and needles the entire time I was reading. I thought Mike was loyal, sexy as hell, and everything a soldier in my mind should be. Clancy was feisty and extremely smart, and she since she continuously surprised Mike throughout the entire book, exasperating comes to mind. Their attraction for each other was evident pretty early in the book, but I really like how their romance was written. Desperately they loved at times, and at others, the explored sensually.
Intimate Danger is my first Amy J. Fetzer book. I am now such a fan, I have to go back and read her previous works!

Well..........2007-08-14
I didn't care for this one.
Modern day: Lab tech person invents biological device to enhance soldiers. The gov't takes over her project and experiments on 4 Marines (without their knowledge).
The character (who I thought was a beanhead) sneaks off to Cuba (or something) A L O N E thinking to "SAVE" the Marines.
The beanhead, LOL, then gets caught up in a drug war and her device to save the Marines gets broken. Hmmmm
The characters in this book frustrated me. Sorry. Got themselves into such a mess from lack of common sense.
Worth Reading Twice!.......2007-04-27
Like Perfect Weapon, and Hit Hard, this book kept me reading late into the night. In Intimate Danger, research scientist Clancy McRae is appalled to find out that the nanotechnology she has been working on and testing to help soldiers in the field has been used on humans way before it's ready. While she's tested primates, no way would she condone the use of the technology on humans. It was just too soon. While those around her are going for the money and power using her research for their own purposes, she holds on to her moral values and tries to correct the mistakes of those on her team. Finding the four Marines used as "test subjects" is priority. She has to deactivate the pods as soon as possible.
Her search takes her to Peru, where she meets Michael Gannon, the leader of the Marines the technology has been used on. Michael, the leave no man behind Marine is looking for his team, shot down while on a mission. Though he is attracted to Clancy, he doesn't act love struck or unprofessional when he meets her. He also doesn't automatically trusted her, which is how someone in his position should be. While he keeps focused on the task of finding his men, he does research into Clancy and uses his many contacts to find out what he can about her. Capable, smart and strong, Michael acted like a true Marine, and definitely one of the good guys.
Mike and Clancy made a good team and I liked that the attraction between them didn't distract from the story. Making Clancy a veteran of Desert Storm helped validate her capabilities when confronted with danger through out the story. A research scientist without that background wouldn't be as believable.
I think the only negatives in the book were the switching back and forth in the story lines, even though everything came together in the end. Overall I enjoyed the story and would recommend it to others that like Romantic Suspense books, and of course, a military hero.
Intimate Danger.......2007-03-10
I have enjoyed Amy Fetzer since I read Naked Truth, and I absolutely loved the character of Clancy in this book. However, while the other storylines in the book were relevent to the story, I felt that there was too much of that and too little character development for Clancy. I would have loved to know how she became the person she was, and more about her relationship with her family.
All in all, I enjoyed this book, and will continue to have any books by Amy Fetzer on my auto-buy list.
Book Description
Many Americans were shocked by the rhetoric and demands voiced during the immigration protests in the Spring of 2006. From Los Angeles to Atlanta, from Phoenix to Chicago, an estimated two million protesters marched in more than fifty cities. They demanded a blanket amnesty for illegal aliens under the banner of "immigrant rights" and insisted that rights now afforded legal immigrants should be granted to those here illegally. Anything short of that was condemned as "racist."
How could the United States have come to such a pitiful condition?
Congressman Tom Tancredo has been the only consistent voice in our government warning Americans of the dangers of failing to secure our borders and fix the nation's immigration system. Five years after the attacks of September 11, 2001, the U.S. government still has done virtually nothing to secure America's borders. The government largely ignores the threats to our safety and sovereignty resulting from its refusal to fix a broken system.
What is happening on our borders is one story, but what is happening within America is even more disturbing. As would-be terrorists plot attacks on our country, vocal advocates of multiculturalism are sapping our strength from within. Together, they form a potent adversary that is as great a threat to our nation as anything we have faced in our history.
As a result, America is in the midst of an identity crisis. As a nation we no longer seem to know who we are or what we believe. Instead of "one nation under God," we are divided, confused, and angry. We need to understand how this has happened and the underlying causes that have us to this divided point.
Tom Tancredo lays out the case that unless the United States changes course, it is headed toward catastrophe. Like the great and mighty empires of the past"superpowers" that onces stretched from horizon to horizonAmerica is heading down the road to ruin. Without strong moral leadership, without a renewed sense of purpose, without a rededication to family and community, without shunning the race hustlers and pop-culture sham artists, without protecting our borders, language, and culture, the nation that was once the "land of the free and home of the brave" and the "one last hope of mankind" will repeat the catastrophic mistakes of the past. In Mortal Danger is his prescription for beginning to repair the damage.
Customer Reviews:
author and Presidential Candidate Tom Tancredo in 2008.......2007-06-20
Colorado Representative Tancredo makes clear that the politically correct labeling of illegal laborers as "undocumented" is incorrect, as most of them have forged documents, forged social security numbers, and/or stolen identities - they are guilty of Felony Document Fraud in addition to having broken a number of other laws to be in our country illegally.
Tom Tancredo is also very clear that our governments failure to uphold our laws by prosecuting the employers of illegals, as well as prosecuting sanctuary communities, sanctuary cities, sanctuary states, and the officials that promote unconstitutional local amnesty ordinances are in themselves guilty of criminal offenses, not the least of which is aiding and abetting, and as such are subject to prosecution.
Amazing book!.......2007-04-19
Written in an easy-to-read language, Tom Tancredo's book is a real eye-opener.
I recommend this book for any budding conservative of any age- especially if he's our next President. If this book is his campaign statement, then we have the opportunity to elect a true American.
The issues of the US security and immigration .......2007-04-10
Congressman Tancredo does one of the best jobs I have seen tackling the all too important and all too often ignored issues of mass immigration and border security of the US. Chapter by chapter he dissects the issue of immigration and it impact on our country, our economy, our health care and the breach of security to this nation. He debunks many of the current low key patches proposed by others in government such as the guest worker program which basically grants amnesty for those who have entered here illegally by breaking the law and are rewarded for doing so. He tackles on of the biggest issues of our day, our loss of national identity in lieu of our pursuit of political correctness and "multi culturalism". He does a superb jobs of demonstrating how many illegals do not severe their bounds to their origin countries and do not make attempts at assimilation to our country and are simply here to exploit its wealth. He assets it is the US's right to decide who comes here and it should be done in this nation's best interest. He discussed how we should be proud of western civilization and illustrates many examples of how we as a society have been bombarded with the message to love all cultures and the country should suit the needs of all cultures at the loss of our own national pride and identity. There should be no hyphenated-American. My only issue is that the congressman takes the occasional political jabs at democrats (Tancredo is a conservative republican). The book would be better suited if this was avoided. Many local and state governments find themselves abandoned by the federal government when it comes to illegals and border security. It's truly an issue for the federal government and not many of our elected officials have had the political courage to resolve this problem. Our borders could very easily be secured (never 100%) so that they are not porous. The one great thing about this book is it's not just a laundry list of all the issues but offers some excellent solutions that the author is currently seeking in his elected position. A very easy read and written in simple language, every US citizen should become familiar with this subject as it could very well be our demise as a nation.
Stop playing the race card.......2007-04-06
Tom Tancredo is a fair-minded, intelligent politician who is helping to structure debate on the issue of illegal immigration for the 2008 presidential election. He cares equally for all citizens regardless of ethnicity. His goal is to preserve the American dream for present and future American citizens. I would like to respond to the lonely reviewer from Seattle who insinuates he's some kind of racist:
Quote:
"The only thing Tancredo and his conspirators in hate contribute to the discussion is racism and ignorance."
The (silent) majority of Americans are weary of the noisy, agenda-driven groups (LaRaza, Southern Poverty Law Center, ACLU, Latino activists, Mexican politicians and just general fools) who resort to playing the race card here. There is absolutely nothing racist about being opposed to people entering the country illegally and thereby depriving legal immigrants and citizens of opportunities that rightfully come with American citizenship. These opportunities are reserved for American citizens because they are paid for by American citizens with their tax dollars. Anything else is just foreign aid.
If the people we're discussing here were blue-eyed, blonde Swedes behaving identically to the current group of illegals (i.e., driving down American workers' wages, stealing Social Security numbers and identities, demanding free health care and education that citizens aren't even entitled to, re-introducing old diseases that we've nearly licked, like tuberculosis and polio, and bringing in terrifying new ones, such as Chagas disease, bankrupting hospitals and refusing to assimilate into our society. . . if these people were light-skinned Swedes, I would want this problem dealt with in an identical manner. There simply is no basis for crying racism here, and it's a dirty tactic. When citizen Latino Americans and African Americans bear the brunt of the problem of wage reduction and opportunity loss, it's a downright ridiculous assertion.
I appreciate Tom Tancredo's amazing efforts to bring this issue to the forefront where it belongs. I urge everyone here to NOT vote for Sen. John McCain who supports a "path to citizenship" for those in this country illegally and also to pay close attention to the views of the other candidates. This book is an important tool in educating the public about this enormous problem which threatens our ability to pursue our American dreams.
In Mortal Danger,The Battle for America's Border and Security.......2007-02-16
A superb picture of the turmoil America is in today. You will find yourself dumbfounded over the lack of immigration and border control. Should Congressman Tom Tancredo decide to run for the 2008 election of the precendency he shall definitely have my vote.

Book Description
The USA Today bestselling author returns to the fascinating world she introduced in Tempting Danger, where a woman's very soul is in mortal danger.
An agent in the FBI's Magical Crimes Division, Lily Yu's job is to hunt down a charismatic cult leader bent on bringing an ancient evil into the world. And her only hope will be to trust Rule Turner, a werewolf prince with whom she has mated. And if Lily can't trust him, she'll be lost forever.
Former cop Lily Yu has her sister's wedding to attend, a missing magical staff to find, and now must deal with her grandmother's decision to return to the old country. Lily could turn to the man she's involved with for advice, but for all the passion that flares between them, she doesn't really know Rule Turner--she's just bound to him for life. Rule happens to be a werewolf, and Lily wonders just how far she can trust him.

Good book! Interested in seeing what happens next........2007-07-17
I'll admit it. I bought this book merely to "tide me over" until one of my favorite authors came out with something new in the genre of paranormal romance. I honestly was surprised!
I jumped into it mid-series, but I didn't feel overwhelmingly lost. The characters are well written and its steamy but not embarrassingly so. The beginning was a little rocky. I can't remember if this story had a prologue or perhaps it was the opening chapter...but it did make me wonder if I had made a mistake. I kept reading though and after that it was pretty smooth sailing for me!
You have lycanthropes, demons, mortals, dragons, and magic users oh my! Bad things bent on world domination, and good things bent on stopping them. The main female character in the story is well written with the title of pragmatist and budding tough chic invisibly stamped on her forehead. The main guy character...alpha with a heart. I'd give you a run down on the story, but frankly its a little hard to put into a one paragraph blurb.
I'm giving it 4 stars, simply because its better than a straight three and there isn't say a 3 and a 1/2 or 3/4 star option available to me. It's not the very best thing out there on the shelf but its pretty good. I am looking forward to the sequel. As far as would I recommend it? Sure, I would...to someone who enjoys the genre.
Take a Trip to Hell.......2007-05-18
This is the second in a series of three (so far). I recommend reading all three, in order. This has a very imaginative take on Dis (Hell) and also has dragons, which is fun. The characters are well developed and the romance is vivid without being overwhelming. I had a little trouble buying the demon but it was a small thing. Overall, a very enjoyable read.
Good characters...Interesting Plot.......2007-03-26
I became familiar with Eileen Wilks' writing through stumbling across her book "Blood Lines" which is actually the third in this series, but I thoroughly enjoyed that story, although it was clear that this was not the beginning of the tale between Lily Yu and Rule Turner. I liked it well enough that I went back and read through the first two books introducing these characters, and they didn't disappoint. I found her writing to be clear and her action interesting enough to keep me turning the pages, and looking forward to learning more about the world that she's created with this series.
Solid entry in supernatural adventure/romance series.......2007-03-02
Mortal Danger, by Eileen Wilks, is the second in an ongoing series about paranormal investigator Lily Yu and her werewolf significant other. There's certainly nothing unusual in the set-up, but the books are distinguished by solid writing and plotting. Eileen Wilks first came to my attention with a short story in the anthology Cravings; from that first taste, I knew I would be following up. I'm glad I did, but this book is not the place to start the series. Wilks assumes that you will be familiar with her characters, and woe betide you if you aren't. If you haven't read
Tempting Danger, read it first. This book is very like it. Wilks makes a refreshing change from those paranormal adventure/romance authors who skimp on the adventure and head straight for the sex. Unless you're after the sex, in which case this is not the book for you. She doesn't shy away from that aspect of her story, but it's far from the most important. I find her characters intelligently and believably written and her adventures engaging.
4 1/2 stars ouutstanding.......2007-02-06
Outstanding detective paranormal fantasy. Lily is now working for the FBI with Rule as a consultant. We also have Cynna a powerful talent, Max a grouchy gnome, a demon, Cullen a striper sorcerer, and assorted other characters. Some humor as when Lily gets on a local cop who is less than helpful. Good characters, good plot, one good brief erotic scene. Just short of being excellent, marred by some typos (cold for could) and editorial inconsistencies. I strongly advise reading this series in order with Tempting Danger first. Its a good read and the series makes better sense that way.
Book Description
An atmospheric debut novel set on the gritty streets of Victorian London, Some Danger Involved introduces detective Cyrus Barker and his assistant, Thomas Llewelyn, as they work to solve the gruesome murder of a young scholar in London's Jewish ghetto. When the eccentric and enigmatic Barker takes the case, he must hire an assistant, and out of all who answer an ad for a position with "some danger involved," he chooses downtrodden Llewelyn, a gutsy young man with a murky past.
As they inch ever closer to the shocking truth behind the murder, Llewelyn is drawn deeper and deeper into Barker's peculiar world of vigilante detective work, as well as the heart of London's teeming underworld. Brimming with wit and unforgettable characters and steeped in authentic period detail, Some Danger Involved is a captivating page-turner that introduces an equally captivating duo.

"An atmospheric debut novel set on the gritty streets of Victorian London, Some Danger Involved introduces detective Cyrus Barker and his apprentice, Thomas Llewelyn, as they work to solve the gruesome murder of a young scholar. When a student bearing a striking resemblance to artists' renderings of Jesus Christ is found murdered -- by crucifixion -- in London's Jewish ghetto, 19th-century private detective Barker must hire an assistant to help him solve the sinister case. Out of all who answer an ad for a position with ""some danger involved,"" the eccentric and enigmatic Barker chooses downtrodden Llewelyn, a gutsy young man whose murky past includes recent stints at both an Oxford college and an Oxford prison. As Llewelyn learns the ropes of his position, he is drawn deeper and deeper into Barker's peculiar world of vigilante detective work, as well as the dark heart of London's teeming underworld. Together they pass through chophouses, stables, and clandestine tea rooms, tangling with the early Italian mafia, a mad professor of eugenics, and other shadowy figures, inching ever closer to the shocking truth behind the murder. Brimming with wit and unforgettable characters, and steeped in authentic period detail, Some Danger Involved is a captivating page-turner that introduces an equally captivating duo while signaling the start of an exciting career for Will Thomas."

Impressively written, disappointing ending.......2007-09-08
I was hooked on "Some Danger Involved" from the very first page. It is a gripping story, very well written, with excellent characterizations, and was historically accurate. Overall, a very enjoyable read. So why the three star rating? Well, without spoiling the ending, it just didn't make any sense. A good detective story leaves hints for the clever reader as to whom the bad guy might be, but there were none. I don't mind if the antagonist is a complete surprise, which it was, but I objected to the fact that there was absolutely no reason for it to be this person over anyone else. Almost as if the auther finished the book, rolled a die and said "ok, here's the bad guy, let's write a quick ending that pins it on him." It's still worth the time to read this book, and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to be entertained with a well written story.
Impressive First Novel - Interesting and Well Researched.......2007-08-23
As a lover of historical fiction and historical mysteries, I was quite pleased with Will Thomas' first installment in the Cyrus Barker/Thomas Llewelyn series, which begins in 1884 London. Part of the entertainment is finding out, little by little along with with Llewelyn, who his employer really is and what makes this man tick. I recently read another historical British mystery that was overloaded with slang and colloquialisms that may or may not have been authentic (at least one was not) but this author concentrates on telling the story and deepening his readers' perceptions of the characters and how they live. For an Oklahoman writing in the 21st century, his portrayal of Victorian London was commendable, and better than some Anne Perry novels I've read. These characters have been compared to Holmes and Watson, and even to Nero Wolfe and his sidekick (the name escapes me), but Barker and Llewelyn belong in a category by themselves. You need to read the book yourself to see what I mean. If you are a Perry fan, you will really appreciate Will Thomas. I look forward to reading his other three mysteries and whatever follows in the years to come. Congratulations on a first novel that was obviously the result of much patience, perseverence, and meticulous research.
A wonderful Victorian murder mystery.......2007-05-31
I am a huge fan of Victorian murder mysteries and am always thrilled to find a new author in this genre. Will Thomas has put forth a wonderful story of suspense, intrigue, and murder against the backdrop of Victorian England.
I highly recommend this book to all fans of Victorian England mysteries and all mystery fans in general.
Not at all like Conan Doyle; try Sax Rohmer..........2007-01-26
There's a bit of atmosphere, hansom cabs & concerns with haberdashery -- but the stereotyped characters are way tired, the religious aspects--encompassing a good bit of so-called plot--(when not evangelical-Christian-preachy) are pretty much Intro. to Judaism 101, and the hero's skills violate Raymond Chandler so many times that I got that 'Fu Manchu' feeling that somewhere in Barker's utility belt would be just the thing to solve this horrible crime...
Replete with sloppy plotting, slipshod repetitive scenes, awful characterizations--a touchy French chef! WOW! Where'd he come up with that one?--and the kind of cop-out ending that makes you wonder why you bothered to get to it.
Save your money, save your time, read something else.
Not bad.......2007-01-11
This mystery is clearly very throughly researched. The ethnic and social tensions of Victorian England provide a nice setting for crimes far removed from the wealthy circles that the esteemed Mr. Holmes and Dr. Watson traveled in.
That being said, experienced mystery readers will figure out "who dunnit" early on, from structural clues rather than written ones. That is, the perpetrator is obvious from the way the author presents characters and plot, long before implicating evidence turns up.
Book Description
This literal survival guide for new pilots identifies "the killing zone," the 40-250 flight hours during which unseasoned aviators are likely to commit lethal mistakes. Presents the statistics of how many pilots will die in the zone within a year; calls attention to the eight top pilot killers (such as "VFR into IFR," "Takeoff and Climb"); and maps strategies for avoiding, diverting, correcting, and managing the dangers. Includes a Pilot Personality Self-Assessment Exercise that identifies pilot "types" and how each type can best react to survive the killing zone.

Great knowledge for aspiring pilots .......2007-08-10
Paul Craig's book is also excellent for pilots who may be doing a lot of flying to attain the hours needed to advance their career. This book is essential for the main reason in that it dispels some myths about why planes go down. Most of the time when a plane crashes, it is due to pilot error and very, very seldom is it something mechanical related. Weather is always a factor but you will get more knowledge of that from an instructor as well as other reading material geared more towards that suject in concerns with flying.
Your own car, new or old will have more mechanical issues that keep you from getting from point A to point B than an airplane will. Definitely great education on the topic at hand, and although there may be others out there, this is not a bad place to start!
Fly safer.......2007-02-15
This book contains detailed review of pilot induced errors through many NTSB accident reports categorized by cause and commented by author. Many typical cases of pilot errors are selected to describe possible cause-effect scenarios. Author also presents statistical charts whose purpose is to warn students and low time pilots. Since I am PPL pilot student, I found this book a good source of information on GA pilot mistakes. If you are also low timer (50-350 hours) read it and fly quite a bit safer.
On down side I must mention it would be useful to see more photos and drawings from actual accidents.
Important knowledge for any pilot.......2006-12-23
Craig's research reveals weak spots in the planning and experience of many pilots, describing both intentional and inadvertent actions which commonly lead to accidents. Knowledge is power, but overconfidence can be fatal; nothing makes this more clear than The Killing Zone. Many, if not all, of the accidents Craig cites could have been avoided with proper planning or decisionmaking.
Outsiders might find it morbid, but a good pilot learns from others' mistakes and passes that knowledge on. Craig has done a great service to the aviation community with this important read - even pilots outside the Killing Zone (50 to 350 hours of experience) can benefit.
The Killing Zone.......2006-11-10
As a pilot in training I found the book to be quite informative and an exceptional resource for recognizing and avoiding some of the obvious and not so obvious reasons why pilots die or rather are killed in airplane crashes.
The book is fairly heavy on statistics, which I suppose is good for some, but for me, it kept me from giving it 5-stars as it slowed the "read" down a little too often for my likes. The book is laid out nicely and the accidents are catagorized to make it easy to follow and focus on each category in turn. I would highly recommend it to anyone who flys general aviaition aircraft regardless of your experience level, from student to CFI. (as a side note, us "new" pilots are in the "safest" category, at least for a little while.
Anyway, the book is a good read, a valuable training resource and good safety awareness refresher for any pilot!
Save your own life.......2006-11-07
this book is a very good read for any new pilot - if you just received your rating then I highly recommend reading this book before you become a statistic for the next edition - JFK Jr. , Cory Lidle etc. each of their mistakes was easily predictable from reading the book - I expect that reading this has made me a safer pilot - I will get through the zone safely!!

Choose Your Own Adventure.......2007-09-10
These books are fantastic - I have fond memories of them from my childhood. As a school teacher, they are a wonderful read aloud. I let the children vote everytime there is a choice. They think they're great!
Great reading for people of all ages.......2007-09-03
We have read Choose Your Own Adventure 1-6, and our 7 year old son, my husband & I were glued to every book. The books are well written, interesting & intriguing. Not too scary but gripping. We highly reccomend these books to everyone. They can be read & reread, a real plus.
NOT the original books.......2007-04-20
My children have been enjoying some of my old Choose Your Own Adventure books from the 80's, so when I saw this rerelease of several classic books for such a reasonable price, I bought it for them. Well, apparently R.A. Montgomery wasn't able to get the rights on the original illustrations, so he had a bunch of freelance designers from Thailand draw replacement pictures for each of them, and they are AWFUL. Not just 'different,' but shockingly, unignorably BAD -- they look like cartoons drawn carelessly by teenagers, with no sense of proportion, anatomy, lighting, or anything else. The drawings in "Mystery of the Maya" are not bad but most of the others are so terrible they render the books unreadable. Leaving them unillustrated would have been better than this. Find used copies of the originals (most of which are for sale cheap on Amazon) or just pick something else to read.
Paths Too Short.......2007-03-30
You make one or two choices and the book is over. They should only have a few endings and make each path longer.
My 9-year-old LOVES these.......2007-01-10
We bought these books for our son because we remembered how much we loved them at his age. They are much quicker reads than I remember, but he loves them, so they get 5 stars. One book takes him less than 45 minutes to get through. He hasn't gotten to the stage where he goes back and makes different choices yet, but I'm sure he'll become even more fond of them then.

Cute.......2007-04-18
This is a great book that you can use to discuss the power of differences with kids. It seems to ellicit good responses, even when used with my fourth graders!
Highly recommend.
Don't Laugh, it's fabulous!.......2006-11-10
This is a wonderful book! This book is an absolute must have for anyone in education. The music CD that comes with the book is fantastic!
A heartbreaking tale of those who are different........2006-01-25
This book gives great insight to what students go through. It helps remind you of what it was like to be a child and how difficult it is sometimes to relate to others. I also believe that this book goes in depth and makes you feel an emotional connection to the trials and tribulations that children deal with. I feel that this book would be an excellent resource to use in class to help the children who are picked on and show other students how to be more considerate of others. The CD is also a great resource to use and to play in the classroom. It really brings the book to life.
Don't Laugh at Me.......2005-10-24
Fast and user friendly service at the right price.
Thanks!
A Wonderful Book with a Wonderful Message.......2005-10-18
Don't Laugh at Me is one of the most meaningful books I have used with my students in a long time. The sensitive material about humanity is handled beautifully. The illustrations are an excellent addition to the book. Every child from the ages of four to thirteen has been spellbound by the beauty of the song, the pictures and the elequence of their message.
