I came up with an invention and had no idea how to protect it or what direction to go next. I had read several other books but Harvey's book rocked!! It gave me so much of the information I needed, I am considering submitting my idea to Harvey Reese to see if he can obtain a licensing agreement.

This is book is an easy read, with a lot of very relevant information. I own a small product development company and the information here is accurate and maybe most importantly very motivating. Read it, and get moving on taking your product from an idea to making money.

This reference book is filled with lots of valueable and helpful information and is a great resource for those who wish to develop an idea.
Author seemed in conflict with other experts in one area. He insists that only a face-to-face meeting can bring results and he strongly suggests that an agent should be hired. Other experts advocate that successs can be had without following this path.

I haven't gotten all the way through the book but it scared me enough not to want to go through the effort of inventing and marketing something.

5 out of 5 stars An Essential Guide for Inventors.......2007-01-07

This book is an essential investment for enabling the inventor to take the right steps, and beware of the pitfalls of rip-off marketing companies and scams, with the thousands of dollars they charge.

The Special Bonus Workbook enables you to get started right away, and numerous Bookmark references refer you to the main part of the book for more detail and with many Words of Wisdom.

Another useful inclusion are the printable versions of the worksheets from the website for proceeding with commercialization of the product.

Valuable contacts of Local Inventors Organizations are also listed to help support inventors.

Finally, quoting from the book, "If you perform the exercises in the Workbook enough times, before you know it the process will flow intuitively. Interviewing people, who you have never met, can actually be fun, and you can make new friends. So relax and enjoy yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful with step by step procedures.......2006-09-22

I recently purchased this book, to market one of our company product ideas. When I picked up the book locally at barnes and Nobles, I was a bit reluctant by the quality of the paper and the print. But within hours I was at my office, reading it, and it has abolutely good information. The "words of wisdom", "tricks of the trade" tips on each page are very helpful.

One can be in business without understanding many critical aspects of invention and marketing. Being a professional services company so far, this book is helpful for me when I'm venturing into new product inventions, manufacturing and marketing.

The books takes the reader step by step with real examples of the authors experience and points out the pros and cons of various scenarios.

It also has a comprehensive workbook for every section of the book (convered as a separate module at the end of the book) for the inventor to document and prepare for everything.

Wonderfully written book. After browsing through few books, I purchased this one. I also got some other related books. But haven't gone through them yet. I'll review them after I read through them.

The author, Ronald has truly manifested his experience for many of us to learn without re-inventing the invention wheel and suceeding without too many trials and errors.

5 out of 5 stars This Updated Version has Patent and Marketing Workbook.......2006-03-05

I found and read the first version of "The Inventor's Bible" in my local library. The book was full of so much relevant and detailed information that I knew I had to own the updated version. When it arrived, I was pleased to discover that the book included a "Patent and New Product Marketing Workbook" to help readers evaluate and profit from their inventions. Even better, you can download the pdf versions of the workbook pages from the publisher's website (Tenspeedpress). When you get to the site, search for Inventor's Bible, then click the book's title on the page that returns, and then click on the link for the complementary Inventor's Bible PDFs.

What I liked most about the book is that it helps you seriously evaluate your invention's chance at making money. Some other books I have read assume you are going to do whatever it takes to profit from your invention and then lead you through the steps. The Inventor's Bible helps you evaluate your invention and then shows you what to overcome to make a profit. If going through that process makes some people reconsider whether their good idea just isn't good enough, then they will be wiser and richer for it.

That being said, after reading the book, I feel more confident that my invention will make me money. At the same time, I now know that it's going to take much longer than I expected, so I'm planning accordingly.

5 out of 5 stars Great Resource for Inventors - highly recommend.......2004-03-11

I found this book very helpful. I am an engineer currently working on bringing my alternative energy invention to market. Not only I found a bunch of good advice in this book but this book made me feel that even though marketing my invention will be a lot of work, it can be done. I've read several similar books ("Idiot's guide.." and "Patents to Profit") but I think what set this one apart for me were the case studies. Reading what some of the other inventors went thru, their rises and their falls, makes you feel like you are already part of that group. I highly recommend this book.

1 out of 5 stars This book is awful.......2007-07-07

I bought this book thinking it would clearly help the process of getting an invention to market. Boy was I wrong. This book is confusing and the ideas seem randomly scattered throughout its many pages. I recommend instead "How to Licnese Your Million Dollar Idea" by Harvey Reese and "The Moms Inventors Handbook" by Tamara Monosoff. These two books are thinner and more straight forward.

4 out of 5 stars Worth the Read.......2007-02-03

A humorous trip through the maze of invention licensing. Lots and lots of facts, examples and quotes. Well summarized.

5 out of 5 stars Worth Buying.......2006-01-25

Thank goodness I didn't take the advice of "A reader" who only gave this book one star ("not very useful, July 30, 2003").

My library had an electronic copy of this book that I've been reading online for the past hour. I'm at the point in the invention process where I've designed my invention and now I need to build a prototype. Already I've gotten valuable advice on invention promotion firms, licensing versus venturing, and where to receive government funding.

When I wrote this review, it wasn't possible to search inside the book. That has since been corrected. Search for and read "Levy's 10 Commandments for Success" on page 12 and "Do You Need a Patent Attorney?" on page 162 for some good advice.

I often rely on reader reviews to help me decide whether to buy a book. However, it's obvious that "A reader" didn't give this book a chance. You will certainly need to read more than one book to learn how to make money from inventing. Your library will probably have lots of inventor books you can read before making a decision to buy. Even if you are going to use a patent attorney, you definitely need to buy "Patent It Yourself" by David Pressman. "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Cashing in on Your Inventions" is another book to own for its helpful tips at many points along the path to profiting from your invention.

3 out of 5 stars Picture friendly but informative.......2005-05-20

The book has a lightweight appearance but there is good advice on negociating contracts based on years of selling inventions and what to look out for - this is where I think the book really wins. It explains contracts and how to get the best one. Later in the book, there is more rudimentary descriptions of the different types of design types and loads of links to both government agencies and independent advice bureaus. It also explains the history of Patents which I found informative and dots humorous and common-garden inventions used today. For such a legalistic thing to attempt to do, I think the book did a good job of making it reasonably clear.

3 out of 5 stars It's okay........2004-11-05

I am happy for the author for his successes, but... he knew people that could help him get his foot in the door. He really has no knowledge of how to help you get YOUR foot in the door, other than general comments on what he would do if he had not known anyone. I am slightly unhappy with the book because the reason I bought it was to get my ideas developed into tangible products. This book will tell you valuable info on what the terms are and helpful info on making a decision about how to proceed, but not enough info about getting to the decision makers of a company. You will be more knowlegable if you buy this book, but you still have a ton of research ahead of you, as the author doesn't help you by providing names and address of key personnel that can help you get your idea or invention shown. Some of you may still feel like "idiots" when you're done reading this book. (?)

5 out of 5 stars Will It Sell? The best investment you will make........2007-05-09

I am a patent agent. I am licensed by the US Patent and Trademark Office to represent clients as they apply for a patent. I recommnend this book to all my prospective clients, even though, after reading it, many decide not to hire my services. Why would I recommend a book that costs me business? Because it is in the best interest of my clients.

Mr. White is a crusty old marketing dude who is a straight shooter and does not care if he hurts your (the inventor's) feelings. Too often independent inventors, fall in love with their idea or invention and cannot see its shortcomings or flaws. Too many inventors run out and pay $5,000+ for a patent only to find later that they cannot sell either the patent nor the product. The author holds a mirror up for the inventor to determine the chances his/her product will have in the marketplace BEFORE they spend a few thousand dollars on a patent application.

Just as every new parent thinks that their baby is the prettiest, and smartest in the world, every inventor seems to think that their invention is the best thing since indoor plumbing. This trap of not being able to evaluate your invention objectively, can cost you big money. Mr. White can save you thousands of dollars on a so-so invention so you will have the money available to pursue that really great idea that is just around the corner.

5 out of 5 stars An older book full of useful content.......2006-10-14

As an information consultant to industry and the government during the 1980's, it wasn't until 1998 when James White noticed an ad in the Lansing, Michigan newspaper about an inventors club. He visited it a few times and decided to join. His outspoken advice led to a club presentation, and it was after the meeting he decided it was time to put this valuable information down in book form. 'The presentation was declared a success. But it was quickly determined that the speech, which just outlined the principles for determining marketability and getting to the market, had almost no apparent effect on the counter productive behaviors of most of the club members. In the middle of this book you will find a quote from Doug Tackens, president of a household manufacturing firm with over 50 years of invention experience, which defines marketing as follows:

Marketing:
Is getting the right product
To the right people
At the right price
Through the right distribution channels
By the right promotion.

This book gets you into the heart of the matters of successful invention from the very beginning. White doesn't mince any words on what he feels is the right route to inventing a successful product. There are already plenty of books about marketing your product, this book is about the product itself. The author urges the reader to stick with something they already know and keep it small (toaster sized).

Each step of the way, White has a unique evaluation system in place that lets you rate your progress. The book has a gold mine of references for those willing to do their homework - and let's face it, if you are not willing, you have no business trying to invent something! There are plenty of website addresses, many of which are now broken links due to the age of the book. In spite of that fact, White has some good advice - "If you don't use the Internet, you'll almost always find yourself eating dust these days."

I recommend this for any would-be innovator/inventor. It may not be the easiest book for someone to comprehend, so I suggest you take your time reading and absorbing the contents a few hours at a time. Make sure to highlight and tag the pages that benefit you the most. Also, note that there is some very specific technical information, such as what kind of computer to buy and what kind of ISP to get, that is obviously out of date. I think the value of the overall wisdom conveyed overrides this obviously archaic technical advice.

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful.......2006-01-15

This book convinced me that the idea I had wasn't profitably marketable. It's very blunt and to-the-point. He has a lot of tips and things to think about. I'm glad I went through the book before I wasted time and money. On to the next idea....

3 out of 5 stars There should be clear descriptions when people decide to sell brochure wear.......2005-10-22

The advice seems to come from a real desire to share wisdom. However, the ideas can hardly seem impartial and objective with the degree of self-promotion the author indulges the reader in this short handbook. The author or editor of the book's description should try to clarify this position in the description. With the wealth of experience Mr. White has in this area, this book could have been written very professionally, as opposed to professionally promotional.

5 out of 5 stars Prepare Yourself for the Real World of Invention.......2001-11-24

"Will It Sell?" is deap reading for the "idea person" who thought that there was a pot of gold waiting at the end of the "good idea rainbow." James E. White, author, tells you like it is--he doesn't mince words. He digs out every fact and every reason why your inventive idea can "fail," but he hopes that you will be the one-in-one-hundred-inventors whose invention won't fail.. He will be your mentor. When Jim explains a fact and each step to follow, you get the feeling that he is looking over your shoulder, correcting and helping you in your every move. "This is the book." If you think reading it is tough, then don't become an inventor. He'll tell you "how to get there," with every reference on each of the 300 pages. And he shows, like no other author, that if you fail on any one stage, don't even think about averaging-out the stages of invention to Pass. He tells the truth-- "No one said it would be easy." -- Who am I to tell you about "Will It Sell?" -- only the President of the Inventors Association of St. Louis, a large inventors' helping organization founded in 1984, that augmented in 1990 the United Inventors Association of the USA - which has over 3000 members. That's who! BUY THE BOOK - "WILL IT SELL"

4 out of 5 stars Great start for a creative mind.......2007-02-21

This book is just what I needed to start me on the invention process. It showed me what the next steps are after you have that "good idea". Don lists many resources and throughout the book gives snapshots of his experiences. It was a big help and others can learn from it. The more important point however, is that he informs you of many "watchouts" and potential inventors will gain the streetsmarts to move to the next level.

5 out of 5 stars Packed with important, practical applications.......2001-12-10

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Invention Manual.......2001-10-30

This is my father's book. Let's get that on the table. I read his first one and it helped me get three other inventions of mine sold to various companies. I consider myself a successful inventor. I hope you consider yourself a successful inventor, as well. This new book is his best yet. In it, he tells us, step by step, how to license an invention. He uses real life experience in a way that is exact and relevant. He emphasizes the breadth of his experience in easy to follow, sequential instructions. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Sincerely,

David Kracke

P.S. I'm mentioned a few times in the book It seems my Dad likes to recount my successes and failures. Thanks, Dad!

5 out of 5 stars Beat the Odds Against New Products.......2006-01-27

It is a sad fact of life that only between one and two percent of patented items make money for their inventors. The author of this book believes this could be increased to between five and ten percent if inventors were provided with and used the information now available through inventor clubs and other groups such as Oklahoma's Inventors' Assistance Program.

Once the inventor has demonstrated he has a working concept and has established some legal protection for it (preferably at least patent pending status), he is faced with a basic decision. That is, to manufacture it himself ("venturing") or to license it to others ("technology transfer" in today's terms).

It is another sad fact of life that most inventors do not possess the qualities needed for creating successful businesses. Thomas Edison is a classic example. Although a brilliant inventor, he often failed when he attempted to commercialize his inventions.

A frequent mistake is not doing elementary market research at an early stage. Large sums of money are often spent on prototyping, patenting, and tooling only to learn that the idea has already been patented and may even have been a catalog item for years! Without revealing details of his invention, an inventor can make a simple check using local library directories. Catalogs and a simple computer check may reveal incredible sources of information relating to his item. The author cites a typical experience where a $50 computer research and a $15 phone call could have saved an inventor $4,000.

This author does a superb job of warning about the many fraudulent "invention development companies" that fleece American inventors out of hundred of millions of dollars every year. He suggests that before you even talk to any firm advertising such services that you check with Robert Lougher of the Inventors Awareness Group, 1533 East Mountain Rd., Westfield, MA 01085-1458 (phone 413-568-5561).

Many inventors suffer from the "great mousetrap fallacy". As children we were told Emerson had said "If you build a better mousetrap, the world will beat a path to your door". His actual words were distorted and that distortion is still quoted today. Yet many inventors assume that they can sit back and wait for a mob of customers to arrive. He who thinks, in this day and age, that a product will sell itself is out of touch with the real world.

Another common disease found among inventors is the tendency to write sales letters that make "deal-killer statements". Some inventors seem totally unaware of the red flags certain statements raise in the mind of potential investors or customers. Mosley cites as examples: "There is no competition" and "If we just get five percent of the market, we'll all be rich". He notes even when there is no direct competition there is indirect competition; television still has to contend with books, movies, etc. Inventors who think they will get five percent of the market just by entering the market impress investors as being blissfully unaware of the difficulties that the marketing of a new item can present.

Inventors often fail to grasp that manufacturing costs are often only a small percent of the retail price. They think that if they can make their item for, say, one-half of what stores are selling similar items for, they will take over the market. They fail to realize that the established items have costs of raw material and labor that are one-fourth or less of the retail price.

Mosley points out that successful inventions are characterized by having the three keys to success: quality, synergy, and research. Quality in a product, he notes, is not only that which modem quality control methods help to achieve, but also that which customers somehow perceive that the product possesses.

By synergy he means how well a new product fits in with a company's other products. A good fit will ensure that the company you license will commit their manufacturing skills, financial resources, and marketing know-how to your product.

The third key, market research, should be viewed as an investment and not as an expense. Modern computer technology makes it possible for extensive market research to be conducted at a high speed. He discusses several databases he has found valuable. He also offers nine more characteristics of successful inventions in addition to these three keys.

In his discussion of licensing and royalties, he points out how certain misperceptions by inventors often kill deals. One such area is the matter of up-front money. Some inventors absolutely will not make a deal without a significant advance payment by the licensee. This can sour potential licensees who would otherwise be willing to risk considerable time and money in bringing the invention to market.

The author devotes an entire chapter to "Ten Ways to Invention Suicide". This chapter analyzes ten common ways in which inventors end their invention's future. He cites the "paranoid inventor" who cannot bring himself to trust anyone. The "omnipotent inventor" who thinks that without any resources whatever he can take on an entire industry and the "greedy inventor" who wants it all for himself.

He goes on to describe seven other types. Some are so emotionally attached to their inventions they cannot enter reasonable deals, some are deaf to suggestions, some who delay and delay when making decisions, and even some who literally fear success.

The book concludes that if the independent inventor thinks that there is some magic formula for the commercialization of his invention, that his invention will probably end up among the 98 percent that fail. However, if the inventor makes an honest effort to understand the process of new product development, he can beat the great odds against new products.

5 out of 5 stars In Passing - A Moment of Silence.......2002-04-06

A moment of silence, please. Thank you, -- for the Best Book on Marketing Intellectual Property has ended its lifespan. The publisher will make no more editions of "Marketing Your Invention, Second Edition by Thomas E. Mosley Jr." -- It hurts me to hear this. I have been promoting this book and the edition before it for over eight years. It is a good, honest, reliable reference book. It is the standard that others have to look up to. Everybody who has read it has given it 5-Stars. -- What..what happened? Can't someone revive and come out with a Third Edition? -- There would be very little to change in its contents.. ... -- I'm distressed. This is a book that should go on forever; like M.A.S.H on tv goes on. -- Like Dick Tracy and Blondie has gone on. -- "Marketing Your Invention" should go on. What can take its place? -- I can see the price soaring for those who may be pressured to give up their last copy. -- I know I wouldn't give up my copy; -- (well, it would have to be a big offer - a three-figure-dollars number ;-) -- Robert Scheinkman, President, Inventors Association of St. Louis.

5 out of 5 stars Right on the Money!.......2001-04-08

Mosley takes you through the hoops of inventing. He emphasizes the importance of due diligence in both the early and later stages of inventing. I particularly like the inventors myths because so many inventors are under false illusions when they begin. This book covers so many of the needed basics on the inventive process. It not only gives you a good overview, but a really good roadmap with a heavy emphasis on research and marketing. Tom's book will help anyone with a new idea or invention to avoid the pitfalls, and help them understand that in the invention process, there is a beginning, a middle, and an end i.e. successfully on the market. He's right on the money!

5 out of 5 stars Honest information from an experienced marketeer.......2000-06-04

This is a very useful book for any inventor trying to learn the ropes on how to market their own invention. Marketing an invention is a very dificult task and the majority of those trying it fail. Reading this book may improve your chances to succeed. The book is written in an easy to understand non-academic way, presenting the invention marketing process from an original point of view. The fact that the overal tone is not cheerful and a lot of mistakes are pointed out it will upset some over optimistic readers. Tom Mosley did a good job trying to convey to us what is needed to be successful and what are the usual problems.

5 out of 5 stars Useful and easy to read.......2000-06-04

I was burned by ISC for a lot of money, if I was reading this book before it would never happen. I have learned a lot about the logic behind marketing your own invention. It is not hard to do, but you have to be honest with yourself first. There are a lot of good places with good information for all inventors on the Internet that will complement the content of this book... take advantage - stay informed. Do not call any "800" numbers that you see on TV they are all crooks.

3 out of 5 stars Good contact resources - becoming dated.......2001-11-15

This book is titled as a "Companion" and it lives up to that name. It is a collection of wide ranging topics related to inventing and marketing an invention. He covers a lot about the patent and copyright processes and then covers how to market your invention with a short chapter on how to get a prototype made.
A large part of the books 400+ pages are forms examples and lists of helpful organizations listed by state. The resource lists are for everything from Inventors Organizations to patent search Internet sites and University Innovation Centers. Going through the list can help with ideas on how to get help solving a problem.
This book is copyrighted in 1995 so at least some of the patent search and application data is out of date. There has been one major change in the patent laws since then, several changes in the fee schedule presented, and large changes in the Internet patent search addresses. I have not read Levy's new "Compete Idiot's Guide...." but I suspect that it is an update of this book.

4 out of 5 stars Better than his other book, he is stuck in toys........1999-11-15

I liked this book. Has good intructions and resources generally, plus the usual fluff of forms and inventors councils. His product report is worth reading as his other books. Perhaps best from the library, but a good book to buy for reference. For a good way on what to invent, I would choose Mosley's "Marketing your invention" and for processes to avoid failure bringing ot market Robert G. Cooper's "Winning at new products" Levy has had one big winner, the game Adverteasing, but is a good author overall. His advice should be taken into account with other invention books for an overall picture.

5 out of 5 stars This is a must read for aspiring inventors!.......1998-07-16

This is one of the best books on the entire patent process in the U.S. Levy, an experienced inventor himself, gives great tips on what to avoid, common pitfalls, and GREAT advice for the novice as well as experienced entrepreneurs/inventors. I'm a professional who has done patent searching for years. All the questions I get from people are all answered thoroughly by Levy's work. Great job!
