If you want to understand the 1990s, you have to understand venture capitalists. These are the people who listen to business pitches by the score, the financial-world equivalent of miners turning over tons of earth in search of precious metal. They're looking for the next Amazon.com, the next Yahoo!, the next eBay. Randall E. Stross, who teaches business history at San José State University, just happened to be there when a firm called Benchmark Capital discovered eBay. eBoys tells the story of how a group of not-quite-middle-aged men came to make an investment that returned a Silicon Valley record of 100,000 percent.Stross is a gifted storyteller who weaves the personal histories of the Benchmark partners with stories of how the firm came to back such companies as Priceline.com and Webvan. We meet guys who weren't born to privilege, men who took unconventional routes into the venture capital business. Probably the most intriguing is Dave Beirne, a hyperaggressive executive recruiter who went into the business after realizing venture capitalists are the ones who really call the shots at high-tech start-ups. We also see the problems Silicon Valley guys have when they try to dot-com the bricks-and-mortar world. The short tale of an aborted partnership between Benchmark and Toys 'R' Us illustrates why the old economy is so mystified by the new.
Anyone interested in how business works should find something of interest in eBoys. From the organizational structure and corporate culture of Benchmark to the histories and personalities of its partners to its adventures in the world of Internet start-ups, it's a digital snapshot that reveals how successful businesses look, think, and mine gold in today's economy. --Lou Schuler
Book Description
In eBOYS, Randall Stross takes us behind the scenes and inside the heads of the gutsy entrepreneurs who are financing the hottest businesses on the Web. The six tall men who started Benchmark, Silicon Valley's most exciting venture capital firm, put themselves at the cutting edge of the new economy by backing billion dollar start-ups like eBay and Webvan. The risks were enormous--but the rewards have proven to be staggering. Within two years, eBay's net worth grew from $20 million to more than $21 billion, while each Benchmark founding partner saw his own personal net worth soar by hundreds of millions of dollars.Customer Reviews:

Paul and Sarah Edwards have kept abreast of changing directions in small business through a series of eight bestselling books that began with their pioneering Working from Home, first published in 1985. Now, teaming up with computer industry journalist Linda Rohrbough, they've set their sights on the Internet and how to profitably incorporate it into an entrepreneurial operation. The book delivers on exactly what the title offers, Making Money in Cyberspace: The Inside Information You Need to Start or Take Your Own Business On-Line, and aims to flatten the learning curve for novice but interested small businesses. The nuts and bolts of working both within the medium (designing Web sites and providing associated services to others, for instance) and with it (selling various unrelated goods and services online) are thoroughly discussed from the small-business perspective, as are technical matters (such as choosing an entrepreneur-friendly ISP and setting up a credit-card account). Periodic profiles of those who successfully use cyberspace in their business--complete with relevant URLs--are also interesting and instructive. --Howard RothmanBook Description
There's no question that the Internet is an increasingly effective place to sell goods or services; yet small and home-based businesspeople are without consulting giants to navigate the frontier of cyberspace for them. Stands the test of (Internet) time.......2001-08-11
Paul and Sarah Edwards seem to have a keyboard that turns whatever is typed into gold. The duo are noted for creating inspiring, hands-on, how-to books for the small time operator with big dreams, and this one is no different. In cyberspace, where one offline line year is the equivalent of ten online years, it is very difficult to write a book about the Internet that is not completely out of date by 3 p.m. the next day. This book though is one the few that can stand the test of time (or at least still be relevant next week).
The Edwards do the usual explaining, defining and exampling, but we were most impressed with their profiles. We visited several websites that were mentioned in the book and found all of them to still be in business! In the lightning fast "up and at `em" today "down and out" tomorrow atmosphere of the Internet this was truly a surprise. It just goes to show-if those entrepreneurs read this book and are still profiting, than maybe you will too.
Chock full of inspiring real life success stories, you'd do well to give this read your full attention.

Anyone Can Derive An Income From It!.......2000-08-02

The authors cite a number of occupations that just about anyone can make a living from online. Check out the helpful checklist at the back of the book!
The book focuses a considerable amount of attention to the details of designing creative Websites that will effectively market an online business operation. Building and promoting effective Websites, developing content, advertising options, payment considerations, and selecting an Internet service provider are covered. A number of actual cases studies are provided to reinforce these important issues.
Readers will appreciate the fact that the authors have expressed themselves in a non-technical manner. Anyone can pick up this book and put it to use! It will make a great companion to other books written by these authors. This is sure to be a favorite among those who love what the Internet has to offer and desire to derive an income from it! This book would also make a nice gift!
A must read for all netrepreneurs and web designers.......1999-11-04

Required reading for IT professionals too!.......2001-04-12
An an IT professional my point of view is different from the intended audience of this book and this is reflected in my review. First, this book provided my with an opportunity to observe the business forces that drive the systems that I support. I gained a good understanding of the business imperatives, as well as the challenges that the business face when developing an e-commerce strategy. From this I gained an appreciation of how the projects that IT initiate are first conceived and was able to see the direct link between these projects and how they ultimately relate to business objectives. These insights are valuable and inspire me to seek ways to better align my domain, service delivery, to business goals.
I also gained a much greater understanding or the many faces of e-commerce, such as the unique requirements of business-to-customer as contrasted with, for example, business to business. From my vantage point prior to reading this book it was just a collection of applications and interfaces. After reading this book I see beyond the technology itself to the real purposes and their associated goals.
This book also contains information that is directly applicable to my profession. The ownership issues and e-strategy leadership chapters gave me a clear view of who the real stakeholders are, which is of the utmost importance to service delivery. This information sparked some ideas about support strategies and other issues that I need to consider with respect to e-commerce systems from an IT perspective. Equally important is the chapters on the roll out strategy, which is a space where I have a definite role, and the scorecard approach to measuring the effectiveness of an internet strategy. The latter gave me some clear ideas about how to align IT service delivery to business stakeholders in the e-commerce domain.
In my opinion this book is as applicable to IT professionals as it is to business process owners and decision makers. It gives the business side a clear understanding of the factors and issues that go into an e-commerce strategy, and an approach to developing and implementing the strategy. It gives the IT professional some unique insights on that drives the requirement to develop and implement e-commerce systems and shows areas where we can add value to the process and help assure a successful implementation.

Under the Radar: Starting Your Internet Business without Venture Capital
Arnold Kling Manufacturer: Perseus Publishing ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0738204684 Release Date: 2001-09-18 |
Amazon.com
In an era when venture capital for a proposed Net startup is about as forthcoming as a politician caught in a sex scandal, Under the Radar by economist-turned-entrepreneur Arnold Kling offers timely advice on opening a new cyber-business without such big-time outside money. Combining experiences gleaned from his own self-funded Homefair.com (which he eventually sold for $85 million) along with examples of 25 other online enterprises also financed that way, Kling presents a practical how-to that readers with real ideas and realistic expectations could use to build viable Internet concerns, even in less-than-optimal times. Kling says there are still feasible niches for online businesses aiming between the $5 million entry level and the $1 billion minimum that satisfies venture capitalists--the "under the radar" zone of opportunity of his title--and outlines a route similar to those he and his other sources have used to fill them. One core suggestion does away with the traditional, time-consuming, and usually unproductive process of preparing and continually revising an extensive business plan; instead, he details a more effective program of 12 initial steps (developing the proper team, identifying a personal commitment threshold, recognizing operational milestones that will take you to the next level) that "netstrappers" can combine with internal and more modest funding sources to build a business that outlasts the next shakeout. --Howard RothmanBook Description
Forget everything you've ever read about starting an Internet business. Forget the moon-shot IPO's. Forget Silicon Valley and venture capital. Above all, forget about fundraising. "Fundraising is not for businesses. Fundraising is for charities," warns this tough-minded, eye-opening portrait of successful Internet entrepreneurship.Under the Radar tells the story of Web companies that bear little resemblance to the cash-burning businesses that were the media darlings before the NASDAQ bubble burst. In this distinctive and timely book, Arnold Kling, an experienced "Netstrapper" who sold his Internet start-up for $85 million, introduces the reader to over two dozen business founders whose stories will inspire and instruct every aspiring and seasoned entrepreneur alike. You will meet Mike Covel, whose Homepharmacy.com earned profits while venture-backed competitors wasted millions of dollars; Michaela Conley, who used her knowledge of the health care promotions field to make hpcareer.net a successful niche employment site; Trevor Cornwell, whose Skyjet.com aggregated the fragmented charter jet industry into a virtual "on-demand" airline. These are some of the "millionaires next door" of the Internet industry. They did not hire public relations firms to concoct front-page stories for the business media. They did not waste time trying to woo venture capitalists, who have their eye on billion-dollar jackpots. Instead, they combined low-cost Internet technology with proven business strategies, and successfully launched grounded and profitable companies.
In Under the Radar, Kling shares with you their success stories. Along the way he provides practical coaching on every important aspect of launching a solid Internet enterprise-from evaluating business ideas to finding the most suitable partners and making the best use of technology. His step-by-step plan will help you to confront the most common challenges that you face and guide you to building solid Internet businesses of lasting value.

Gentlemen, start your businesses!.......2003-04-08
It will not make you rich overnight, but it will explain patiently the unique challenges of starting and operating an Internet-based business.
Not all ideas are VC-worthy and this book describes the basic VC premises.
The case studies are quite in-depth and definitely will help you avoid same mistakes. The author does not shy away from early failures and fatal choices of wrong business partners.
In short, you'll enjoy the book and learn many things. I highly recommend it to any enterpreneur.
Don't buy this book.......2002-03-19
His title suggests that he has insight into how one could use true bootstrap techniques to get a company started. Yet, in one of his ten or fifeteen bullets about how to start a business successfully, he discusses the topic "when to line up funding". How under the radar is that?!
I would have been more impressed to learn that Mr Kling understood and articulated how to start a business using founding customers or how he worked the corporate banking system to gain access to lines of credit. I think Homefair was a great idea, but 99% of most net businesses today can not be started that cheaply. Same goes for the dozens of Web Design Firms he cites as success stories (Most were bought by companies like IXL, USWeb (Which became MarchFirst), Homestore and where all know where these have ended up.
I could continue about the lack of flow or organization in the book itself but I feel the description of lack of useful content is plenty for this review. I was truly disappointed with this book.
Wish I had this when I started my first net business.......2001-11-30
Mandatory startup business reading.......2001-11-23
The examples and suggestions provide business guideposts to starting and growing an innovative company on the Internet. Under the radar is that vast space of million and multi-million dollar niches that don't qualify for the VC or IPO. This is the space where we can do well for others, make money, and not get trampled by the elephants. The area that Arnold Kling describes is even riper since the dot com bubble broke.
Buy this book for the chapter about the economics of VC financing alone. It is a clear short demonstration of why VC financing is unsuitable for the majority of startups (and perhaps is a quick way ruin a good thing).
Get some experience without having to live through it all.
I'm biased, but..........2001-11-22
The only quibble I have is at the very end, when the author suggests that technology and statistics may open up the investment pool to "Under the Radar" companies by allowing investors to better manage risk (i.e. make investment decision on more than just "gut feel"). That may be so, but his examples -- a computer that can beat the world's best Othello player, automated underwriting of consumer loans -- are less than persuasive because they deal with relatively simple problem sets (winning a game based on probability, making a loan based on a few easily defined credit characteristics). The profile of a successful startup contains many, many hard-to-quantify attributes (including luck) and they are often mutually exclusive. For example, as an investor do you look for a charismatic CEO like Steve Jobs or a reclusive techno-genius like Seymour Cray? The answer is both. I suspect we're a long way away from a reasonably reliable system for predicting startup success. (Witness the stock market, where the majority of professional fund managers fail to outperform the averages even though they have a wealth of data and modeling technologies at their disposal.)
But this is just a quibble, and an irrelevant one at that. The focus of this book is how to start a successful business, not picking winners and losers. Whether you're already on your third Internet business or just thinking about making the leap for the first time, this book is a must read.

Book Description
Mallor, Barnes, Bowers and Langvardt’s, Business Law: The Ethical, Global, and E-Commerce Environment, 12th Edition, is appropriate for the two-term business law course. The cases in the 12th edition are excerpted and edited by the authors. The syntax is not altered, therefore retaining the language of the courts. As in the 11th edition, the 12th edition includes a mix of actual AND hypothetical cases. The title has been changed to reflect a new focus of the book – the global and Internet environment. Business Law: The Ethical, Global, and E-Commerce Environment, 12e includes new pedagogy such as opening vignettes and new-boxed features such as “Ethics in Action” and “Cyberlaw in Action.” This combined with case briefs and concept reviews, along with some reorganization of the text results in a more complete, relevant and user-friendly text.Customer Reviews:

Not reader friendly, not study friendly, not friendly...........2003-09-03
This book - textually speaking - is so poorly arranged. Key terms are imbedded in the text, there's no review at the end of the chapters, it's written in terrible legal-ease. "Down to earth" (non lawyer legal-ease) examples are difficult to come by, since most of the examples are actual cases that go on for pages (and they're "briefs"). To compound the matter, I spent $$$ on the study "guide" because the book is so unfriendly for studying. And guess what? The study guide has NO ANSWERS! What kind of a guide is that? How does that guide you? If you want it to be an "additional exercises" book, then call it that. But STUDY GUIDES ALWAYS have the answers. I hope your Prof. is better than the book they assign. "Business Law Today" is worlds better and easier to read and study, and better outlined and formatted for the "lay" person.

Mastering the Digital Marketplace: Practical Strategies for Competitiveness in the New Economy
Douglas F. Aldrich Manufacturer: Wiley ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0471345466 |
Amazon.com
Mastering the Digital Marketplace, by Douglas Aldrich, is a sweeping, sometimes overwhelming, overview of managing in the new economy. Aldrich contends that the digital economy has changed all the rules, and businesses that fail to innovate, embrace new ideas, and shed the old ways are not likely to survive. This book, which is based on Aldrich's research at the A.T. Kearney management consulting firm, shows managers how to transform their products-and-services offerings, organizational culture, and even entire industries to keep pace with this revolutionary change.Among the many points that Aldrich makes is that businesses must abandon their traditional command-and-control structures. Because today's consumers want quality, customization, and richer information around products and services, managers must learn to forego the "accountant mentality" and empower employees, giving them a mandate to experiment and try new ideas. He writes that companies "must leverage the entrepreneurial capabilities of its employees ... because they create the intellectual assets from which customers increasingly derive value."
Other areas that Aldrich touches on include everything from supply-chain and knowledge management to consumer behavior and privacy concerns. Any manager looking for a comprehensive and practical understanding of the new digital marketplace will find that Mastering the Digital Marketplace covers the territory. --Scott Harrison
