Book Description

Once every decade a book comes along that becomes the standard in a field of study, the indispensable reference that every thoughtful practitioner must have on the shelf. Like Samuelson in Economics, Drucker in Management, and Porter in Strategy, Rayport and Jaworski have written what leaders in the New Economy are calling the standard in e-commerce strategy formulation.

e-Commerce presents managers and strategists with road-tested frameworks for competing in the New Economy. This presentation is organized to facilitate the decision-making process for formulating e-commerce enterprise strategy. The text progresses from framing market opportunities to a discussion of New Economy business models, customer interfaces, and communication and branding issues through to implementation, evaluation, and valuation of the online enterprise.

The textbook and companion casebook, E-Commerce and Cases in E-Commerce, are the first volumes produced for the McGraw-Hill/MarketspaceU learning series on e-commerce. McGraw-Hill/MarketspaceU have formed an alliance to develop and deliver exceptional higher education teaching materials on the latest business practices and theories by leading thinkers in the field of e-commerce. McGraw-Hill/MarketspaceU aim to equip present and future executives, managers, and strategists in becoming successful creators of value in the new economy. To accomplish this goal the alliance offers a multi-media suite of cutting-edge tools to help navigate the world of e-commerce. These tools include E-Commerce and Cases in E-Commerce, MarketspaceU.com, the McGraw-Hill Online Learning Center (OLC), and the McGraw-Hill E-Business Power Web.

MarketspaceU is part of Marketspace, a Monitor Group company. Monitor Group is a family of professional services firms linked by shared ownership, management philosophy and assets. Monitor’s roots can be traced back to the Harvard Business School – where a number of its founders studied and taught in the 1980s. Marketspace was founded in 1998. Jeffrey Rayport and Bernie Jaworski (two of its founders) are the principal authors of the first books produced by the McGraw-Hill/MarketspaceU alliance.

e-Commerce has already received early critical acclaim from academic and Internet business leaders:

“Rayport and Jaworski have defined the ‘space’. e-Commerce is a primary weapon in the e-business frontier. Do not let your competitors read this book--buy every copy…” Jeff Taylor, Founder and CEO, Monster.com

“Finally someone has put it all together! These leading thinkers have put in one place a brilliant and comprehensive framework for thinking through, planning, teaching and managing e-Business. And – beyond that – this book is a portal to a stream of the most complete set of online, video, and other resources for e-Business learning to date. Great insights. Powerful tools.” Ralph Oliva, Executive Director of the Institute for the Study of Business Markets and Professor of Marketing, Pennsylvania State University

“e-Commerce is the first textbook to show how firms gain competitive advantage in the New Economy. The authors introduce a number of new and innovative concepts, frameworks, and tools that benefit both students and managers. This book is destined to become the standard New Economy text in leading MBA programs.” John Quelch, Dean, London Business School

“This is a wonderfully designed pedagogical device. The chapters build foundationally, so as to empower the student to deal with unique New Economy concepts, like the DCF approach to valuation etc., towards the end. The chapters are filled with case vignettes, viewpoints, and thought bytes that draws the self-selected reader in, and engages them in a sophisticated debate regarding the Internet economy. The highlight of the book, for me, was the way linkages were provided to existing management concepts. Thus the reader is not left wondering what the connection to the old paradigm is, in fact the reader gets a working dose of those ideas in the book chapters. This makes the book a stand-alone, comprehensive text with a cutting-edge tone and content.” Kastori Rangan, Eliot I. Snider and Family Professor of Business Administration Harvard Business School

1 out of 5 stars Obscure and too expensive.......2002-12-27

As a professor of ecommerce I think that the authors have unnecesarily obscured a subject that deserves a better prose and a more logical thread of reasoning.Theirs is a text written for other academicians and contributors to the HBR, not for students, unless they are candidates to a very high academic degree. ...

5 out of 5 stars Much more than eCommerce.......2001-08-16

This book is about much more than eCommerce. It is the handbook for doing business in the "New Economy". I have taught ecommerce courses in several universities and am familair with most of the titles avialable on this subject: none of them even come close. Read and study this book now before the competiton does.

    Book Description

An in-depth technical guide on the security technology driving Internet e-commerce expansion.

"Planning for PKI" examines the number-one Internet security technology that will be widely adopted in the next two years. Written by two of the architects of the Internet PKI standards, this book provides authoritative technical guidance for network engineers, architects, and managers who need to implement the right PKI architecture for their organization. The authors discuss results and lessons learned from early PKI pilots, helping readers evaluate PKI deployment impact on current network architecture while avoiding the pitfalls of early technical mistakes. Four technical case studies detail the do's and don'ts of PKI implementation, illustrating both successes and failures of different deployments. Readers will also learn how to leverage future PKI-related technologies for additional benefits.

5 out of 5 stars Very useful guide to PKI........2003-11-19

If you have just started working with PKI software or with OpenSSL and would like to gain a better understanding of X.509 certificates, certificate enrollment protocols and PKI, this book is for you. It's an excellent guide written by two of the co-authors of the "Internet X.509 Public Key Infrastructure: Certificate and Certificate Revocation List (CRL) Profile" (RFC 3280).

2 out of 5 stars planning for PKI.......2002-07-20

I was expecting something which is more practical with regards to PKI. Author talks about theory of PKI in half the book. And then provides case studies which has very low utility if you are thinking of implementing PKI in J2EE or .NET or even ordinary ecommerce applications...The title is totally a misnomer. Only good thing i found was that the theory presented was helpful to understand PKI...

    5 out of 5 stars What a great read.......2002-06-05

WOW, this goes into some great detail. I am new to PKI, but this has really opened up my eyes to some of the more exquisite details. Great for anyone interested in PKI, but you do need to have some knowledge on Cryptography.

3 out of 5 stars Still work to be done with PKI.......2002-01-27

While Planning for PKI is a well written book, after reading I still am not sure how it all fits together. I bought the book to learn more about PKI and chose this book because previous references rated this as the best book available on PKI. After reading this book I know a little more about PKI, but this book did not "de-mistify" PKI for me.

5 out of 5 stars Planning for PKI: Non-techie's review.......2001-09-18

This is a great book for those of us who are NOT PKI development engineers. I learned a lot from this book; the authors, Russ Housley and Tim Polk, were able to present technical material in a way that was completely understandable to non-technical people who are interested in Internet and computer security issues. The Appendix on ASN.1, for example, clarified structures for me. As a policy person, I particularly enjoyed the Chapter on PKI Policy, thought it well written, succinct, and right on target. Since I read this book, I have referenced it in presentations and papers on the subject. Great work!

While strong encryption methods exist that offer plenty of security for commercial-level protection, issues such as identification, authorization, and reliable issuance of digital signatures require a broader set of standards. Public key infrastructure (PKI) is just such a framework, addressing all of the issues for complete solutions.

Authored by four RSA Security experts in the field, PKI: Implementing and Managing E-Security aims to explain the vulnerabilities of encryption in today's Internet-based business universe and lay out how the application of PKI can help. The authors frankly point out the areas where PKI is still immature in the real world and try to inspire their readers with their zeal to solve the remaining problems.

The book begins with an exploration of cryptography and, in particular, public key cryptography--the accepted approach for most of today's security systems. The text moves quickly into precise security terminology but makes excellent use of creative diagrams to illustrate configurations and scenarios. These diagrams often beg a bit of reflection since they are frequently used to point out vulnerabilities that may not be immediately apparent.

The heart of the book examines the management of keys and certificates, authentication, and the establishment of trust models. There are overviews of current technologies that implement PKI, but the focus of the book is to encourage readers to construct their own fully compliant solutions.

PKI: Implementing and Managing E-Security is not light reading. However, it serves double duty as both an overview of the sticky issues of securing information delivery over the Net as well as a comprehensive look at the scope of PKI for those considering a full-fledged solution for their extranets and e-commerce sites. --Stephen W. Plain

Topics covered: Symmetric and asymmetric cryptography, hashes and digital signatures, digital certificates, PKI basics, PKI services, key and certificate life cycles, PKIX, protocols and formatting standards, trust models, authentication methods, deployment and operation, and return on investment calculations.

    2 out of 5 stars Good but.......2005-05-18

The writer uses his mother's peppermint pie as reference point to explain the intricacies of PKI, which he does well. But after a point it gets distracting and very boring. The explanations of PKI components such as CA, RA is very repetitive. The PKI protocol explanation is very difficult to understand hence shows that the author(s) did not understand the subject themselves. Also few sections and even diagrams have been lifted out of RFC documents directly. Which is very sad and not to speak against the norms of security which the book purports to protect!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of PKI.......2004-09-23

You can treat this as "the" book you need to read to understand different aspects of PKI to get a "big picture". Very good analogies to the things that you use in day-to-day life. It reads like fiction and will make you happy that you chose to read this.

5 out of 5 stars Explains PKI at a level better than most other options.......2003-06-01

The author has a unique ability to explain PKI (Public Key Infrastructure) in a way that is detailed and clear. PKI is a very complex topic and requires a knowledge of many other fieds including technology and security to even begin. It is beyond the grasp of the average Internet user today. After reading many other PKI books and doing hours of research on the Internet regarding PKI, I had been able to piece together the processes and basics on PKI. But after only reading the first 2 chapters of this book, I felt I understood concepts better than any other source.

The only criticism I have is that the author uses too much levity in explaining his points. The jokes are not that funny but unfortunately they keep coming.

5 out of 5 stars Great for PKI newcomers.......2002-06-01

This is a great book for those fairly new to PKI. I needed to find out about PKI quickly, and this book explained it in clear terms. It begins by explaining encryption techniques and algorithms, and you don't have to have PhD in mathematics to understand it. Then it introduces PKI in logical pieces and concepts. Each chapter builds on the previous chapter, so it is really easy to understand. It shows how various applications can use PKI (SSL, SMIME, etc) as well as how a PKI can be implemented.

If you are new to PKI and need to get a handle on it quickly, then I highly recommend reading this book. It is well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best real-world examinations of PKI.......2001-09-27

I've read quite a few books on PKI now, one of the best being Schneier's Secrets and Lies, which is fairly negative on the technology over all, and appropriately so.

This book is a good deal more positive on the technology, but is not pollyanna. I think that Schneier realizes that the technology is a helpful tool, though it does not solve the human engineering problems that need o be solved to implement "real" security. This book helps you understand how to do that, and gives you a feel for where the bodies are buried.

The biggest skeleton in PKI's closed has always been authentication, which PKI does not solve, but vendors would have you believe it does. This is the first book by from a PKI house that lays those cards on the table. OF course, RSA *does* make most of its dough from selling securIDs...

But I think this one is a keeper.

If you've been charged with setting up a public key infrastructure (PKI) for an organization, or if you're just not content to trust commercial products' claims of security, have a look at Secure Electronic Commerce: Building the Infrastructure for Digital Signatures and Encryption for a clear and complete overview of digital certificate management techniques. This richly detailed and heavily referenced volume generally stays clear of implementation specifics. Readers can count on it to provide the background in concepts and terminology that they'll need to make PKI design decisions.

Without exception, this is a very clearly written book, but there are rather few conceptual diagrams--and a few more graphics might have clarified the relationships among entities. Regardless, it's abundantly evident that the authors did a great deal of research--a rarity in this field. Nearly every other sentence contains a reference to an endnote. To truly understand how PKI works, study this book and the material it references, and participate in online forums on PKI issues. --David Wall

Topics covered: Public key infrastructure (PKI) design and functionality, including the legal principles behind binding electronic transactions and the details of authentication, encryption, non-repudiation, and key management. Certificates, Certificate Authorities (CAs), and means of managing trust relationships are all covered.

Highly recommended - This is still the best intro book I've seen on PKI. Precisely and clearly written. Can't wait for the second edition, though, as this edition is getting a bit dated.

5 out of 5 stars Greak Book for a Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) Overview.......1998-09-03

This book is great at understanding the major components of a Public Key Infrastructure and the surrounding issues. You certainly would not walk away being able to set up a PKI, but you would be able to discuss it intelligently. If you are trying to come up to speed on PKI, this is the book for you. The subject is too big to cover everything in one book; so, I would also recommend picking up some more books that look at security issues specifically. One recommendation is E-Commerce Security by Ghosh.

5 out of 5 stars Clearly written guide to public key infrastructure.......1998-08-26

Ford and Baum do a great job explaining the ins and outs of public key infrastructures, covering both the technical and non-technical (legal, administrative, financial, etc.) issues with clarity and insight. Chapters 6 and 7 are especially worthwhile for those looking at the latest IETF PKIX standards.

4 out of 5 stars Great read - must for young entreprenuers!.......2007-09-17

This book was great! It is inspiring and touching and informative about the inner workings of the tech business in the late 90's. Being that I have several ideas of my own which I'm attempting to get off the ground it was a great read for me - so much so that I read the entire book in a day. That's how easy of a read and how interesting this book is!

      1 out of 5 stars a whitewash by a callow founder.......2006-11-17

At an age when he should have been interning in an NGO or assistant-managing a fast food outlet, Paternot became a tycoon on paper. That was a topsy-turvy, demented era that evokes only embarrassment and disdain now. Now Paternot, who was part of vaporizing trusting investors' money, tries yet again to make a few bucks off the corpse of that era. Don't help him. Borrow the book through interlibrary loan (it is unlikely your particular library will own it) and struggle through his amateurish prose for free.

      5 out of 5 stars A great story.......2004-01-07

I really enjoyed this story. Having grown up in the same time I could relate with the description of reality as the writer describes. He is clearly not a writer by profession, which makes the book seem even more genuine and accurate. This book is a keeper!

      5 out of 5 stars excellent book!.......2002-11-27

I just finished reading this book and I just wanted to say that I think this story is very fascinating. It was akin to reading a private diary. ( I wish I could write like that too.) To be so young and hit it big is the sort of thing that people dream of, myself included. I am 30 years old and so I can relate to some of the things he went through. As was pointed out, on the one hand, Steph and Todd had to conduct themselves as mature businessmen running a company. And on the other hand, he wanted to act the way other 23-year olds act, fun-loving and party-going, with boundless energy.

The last chapter, The Second Coming, was my favorite, as he poses self-searching questions about what new direction to take with his life. I find myself in the same position at this very moment. Good for him that he found his calling--- writing and acting. Hope to see the movie when it comes out.

      4 out of 5 stars Internet mania.......2002-07-09

I am 29 years old and was looking for a book to read by an author of my generation. And I stumbled across this one by Stephan Paternot. His true story almost reads like a novel because it sounds so exciting and adventurous. Being about the same age as the author and having been swept through Internet mania and lost my share of money, I found his story very engaging. I saw the review in salon.com after reading the book and was rather disappointed that the reviewer did not share my enthusiasm. Apparently, the book did not meet the reviewer's high intellectual standards, when in fact, Paternot's writing style was (I felt) a major strength in the book. It's as if the negative reviews (from other websites) I have seen are not so much about his book as they are begrudging of Paternot who possesses youth, movie-star looks, worldly upbringing, entrepreneurial family heritage, and Ivy League schooling. So his company failed. But other than maybe Michael Dell or Bill Gates when they were starting out, how many under-30 CEOs do you know have the poise and savvy to lead a highly publicized and publicly-traded company?

        Book Description

Web-based applications are commonplace today. Tens of millions use Internet commerce and information sites daily, and corporations are increasingly choosing to use Web architectures and applications across the enterprise. The rich content that is integral to our view of a Web application differentiates the new application model from its previous instantiations. The rich content of graphics, pictures, and—at times—audio and video provides a user experience that captivates while informing, educating, and selling; yet the rich and unstructured text presented by the application carries most of the message and delivers the information. The most effective applications deliver a rich experience to each user by presenting only the information they request and enabling them to find additional information as needed. Application developers could provide this experience by carefully categorizing and describing content to meet every possible user request. Yet in practice, predicting user needs is virtually impossible, and categorizing the flood of available information by hand is far too expensive. Tools are now available that enable effective use of unstructured data alongside structured processes. These tools create hierarchies, categorize documents, extract metadata, and provide a search experience far superior to first-generation keyword search. As a result, these tools play an important role in delivering content-rich applications. Yet the market, measured by revenue, is still small. Language processing providers have focused more on the magic of their science than on creating a means of delivering their value.

          Customer Reviews:

          5 out of 5 stars Well written & business-focused.......2002-10-06

Although the title implies that this book is aimed at technical readers, it is strictly focused on the business aspects of e-business, with just enough emphasis on technology to educate non technical readers.

Among what I most like about the book is the clear writing, and the level of detain into which it goes into business and technical aspects of e-business. Technical readers will greatly benefit from the business aspects, especially the parts about online retailing and marketing. Moreover, some excellent material on customer relationship management is interwoven throughout the book, which will benefit both the business and technical reader. I also liked the parts about supply chain management, and trust, security and electronic money - these topics are important to business and technical readers and the material is accurate and clearly explained.

For business readers the details on architecture and technical underpinnings will arm them with the knowledge necessary for dealing with the technical side when it comes to implementing and managing the technology needed to support business imperatives.

There are additional bonuses to this book - it addresses knowledge management from a business perspective (important to providing online service and support to customers as well as showing how internal business processes need to be aligned to support online commerce), and keen insights on how the people side of the business needs to be structured to enable e-business operations.

Overall, this is an excellent view of the realities of implementing and managing e-business, and will provide common ground for the business and technical team members who will be charged with making it happen.
