Book Description

More than 60% of Americans with medical insurance are enrolled in HMO's, but few are happy about it. Procedures are denied, doctors are rushed, patients are frustrated--it seems as if everyone has an HMO nightmare story to tell. Now two accomplished doctors, including the author of the New York Times bestseller The Arthritis Cure, offer readers an invaluable guide to understanding, dealing with, and getting the most out of their physicians and HMO's.

Setting forth a series of survival strategies for readers of any age, Drs. Feinberg and Theodosakis focus on the vital doctor-patient relationship, and on the importance of prevention. They show readers how to form an alliance with their physicians in order to obtain the care they need, as well as how to undertake prevention programs. Best of all, they offer readers advice on how to achieve better service from their HMO than they ever thought possible, including tips on how to:
o Turn a 10-minute office visit into a learning tool
o Avoid miles of red tape
o Research your own medical condition
o Quickly turn an administrator's "no" into a "yes"
o Get the tests you need, not just the ones they think you need
o Predict your own future health care needs

Managed care is here to stay. But with the right combination of self-reliance, knowledge, and healthy living, good care is possible. For anyone worried about what their HMO will do to them, here's the perfect guide to finding out what managed care can do for you.

5 out of 5 stars HMO's.......2000-10-03

My 85-year-old mother recently fell and severely fractured her hip. Unfortunately, she belongs to a Medicare HMO based in Southern California. Because of the nature of her fracture, she required pinning of her femur, a more extensive procedure than the usual treatment for hip fractures. The HMO which was contractually responsible for her care denied payment to the Skilled Nursisng Facility after l8 days, in spite of written reports from her physical therapists and her doctor detailing the remarkable progress she was making. Thanks to this book, we were able to appeal the HMO's denial, which was immediately again denied by the HMO. The appeal then went on to HCFA for review and the denial was reversed. This has saved my mom thousands of dollars. It should be required reading for anyone involved with HMO's!

5 out of 5 stars Required reading for people with health insurance.......2000-03-26

As a physician who has dealt with many HMOs, I believe this will become the premier guide for people to get the best care out of whatever system they're using. It is about time someone put all of the secrets and resources in one place. Medicine has changed significantly in the last few years - right under the noses of most patients and doctors. It's caused frustration as quality care has diminished. This book will help you get back in charge. I think it should be given out by insurance plans as a guide to how patients should use the system. Congrats to the authors!

5 out of 5 stars Care Package for Patients.......2000-03-26

Read this before you go to the doctor! It explains how to work with your doctors, rather than against them, to get the care you need. It points out why the red tape exists, why the doctors are bound by it, and how the two of you can get around it. This book should be issued to every patient. It will benefit doctors and patients alike.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read!.......2000-03-25

Don't Let Your HMO Kill You is an invaluable resource which every family should have. It empowers the consumer to take charge of their and their family's health care. Drs Theodosakis and Feinberg bring both insight and useful advice to help the patient make the most of managed care. From better organizing your doctor's visit to learning how to successfully appeal a denial from your HMO, there is something for everyone in this powerful book.

5 out of 5 stars Help with the HMO maze.......2000-03-21

This book is full of great advice for all of us who have been frustrated by dealing with an HMO. It lays out the reasons why managed care has problems, and then explains in plain language how to get good health care from a system that isn't set up to be patient-friendly. There are really good tips on how to get the most out of your plan. Instead of focusing on what's wrong, Drs Theodosakis and Feinberg tell you what you can do to make it work. They are especially good on telling how to build good relationships with the health professionals that you have to depend on within the HMO system.

I don't know what is up with the Entrepreneur-magazine series of books, but I've read several of them now and I've yet to be impressed with any of them. The best way to describe this book...BLAND AND FULL OF FLUFF. Most of them are apparently written by people who have NO real-world business experience. They are not recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting but you still need to do alot more.......2005-07-31

Don't think that by reading this book that you will close the last page go out there and start inspecting homes.
YOu need alot more information and you will need to read alot more books and do some proper training. However the book is an interesting read and you will get a few ideas on what you should do. it advises to get some interpersonal skills if you do not already have them. So I went and bought a few books on that, and it cost me over €30. But Im pretty sure it will help.
The book explains the different types of reports and abit about marketing, actually it flirts with all the aspects but does no get too deep.
Overall, its worth a read but just don't bank on starting up when you put it down.

5 out of 5 stars A Good Very General Introduction to the Business.......2005-06-10

This is one book you should read before you go into business for yourself. It is not "THE" book on the subject. Instead, it is a general overview of how to start a business of your own, and only incidentally uses the idea of a home inspection service as the business to start.

Before starting your own Home Inspection Service, you do need to know about a lot of things such as licenses, legal aspects, record keeping, setting up an office, and this is all here. The description of most of these is rather brief, but it will tell you at least the general concept of what you need to do.

As for inspecting homes, this book points you in a few places that you should read and classes you could take. My own experience is that you should go to work for a home inspection service for a while to learn what the business is really like before you attempt to delve into it yourself.

2 out of 5 stars NO help for starting an inpsection business!!.......2005-03-27

I bought a lot of books to learn how to do home inspections and become a pro home inspector for a new career. This book was one of the worst since the title makes you think you will learn about how to start and run a home inspector company. But the fact is that the concepts explained in the book can be applied to ANY business because they are so basic and general and have NO specific link to home inspector companies. The book is written by someone who definitely is NOT a home inspector and knows nothing about home inspections. Perhaps they know about starting a general type of business or company. The problem is that they just took general basic information and put it into a book that can be applied to anything and has no relevance to home inspectors. You could change the title and put any type of business on the title and you would not have to change the text inside and you would see the simple ideas in the book do NOT help you out. I do NOT think this is the right choice for anyone looking to be an inspector or start an inspection business. There are other books on Amazon that are far better than this one!!

1 out of 5 stars There are better books out there.......2004-04-02

If you're looking for real, useful information on starting a home inspection business, or becoming a better home inspector this book won't help you much. It doesn't take long before you realize the person writing this is not a home inspector. Mostly filler, with very little content. The "how to start your own business" tips can be applied to ANY business & are very basic. I got so frustrated with the lack of information I just stopped reading it 2/3 of the way thru.

4 out of 5 stars Good for those starting inspection business.......2004-02-27

I agree with the previous reviewer that said this doesn't have any how/what-to-inspect content, but I think the authors intent was to help those interested in starting their own business. I think the author assumes you have or know where to get experience/knowledge on home inspection. He even recommends some sites. This book really helped me get a feel for the business of home inspection and how/where to start.

5 out of 5 stars Practical Advice for tarting a Vending biz.......2007-09-23

If you're thinking about starting a vending business and need to know how the pros work the biz this book is for you. If you r an experienced veteran and want some validation on your best practices and principles this book is for you. If you are just looking into starting a vending business and have no vending machines and no stake in the game this book might turn you off to the vending industry before you even try you hand at the vending business.

4 out of 5 stars Good book with valuable examples.......2007-08-22

This is the second book on vending that I have read recently. I enjoyed this book due to the good examples that the author used.

1 out of 5 stars what kind of a jackass reviews her own book?.......2007-07-21

answer: the author of this thin tome. even worse the book reads with the authority of a high school research paper. don't waste your money. the author is a poser.

5 out of 5 stars Great For Beginners!.......2003-09-19

This book provides excellent step-by-step guidance to starting a vending machine business. The writer seems to know what it's like to start a small business when you've never worked for yourself before. The writing is engaging but there's no sales and no hype. However, there is solid, easy to understand advice from individuals with successful vending businesses of various types. It helped me see what kind of vending businesses I could start. Also, I really liked the worksheets and other sample items that I can copy and use for myself. Perhaps this book is too basic for someone who already has a vending business, but for a newcomer like me it's perfect -- it's helped me avoid pitfalls and stick with the techniques that result in success. This book has been invaluable in opening up a whole new world for me!

1 out of 5 stars Bland - not worth buying.......2003-08-28

This book is bland, bland, bland. Basically it was written by someone who knows nothing about the vending business...they just did a little research on it and put together a lousy book. I own a successful vending business and thought a book from Entreprener Magazine might be handy to get some new ideas from...but it's not. There are few good ideas in this book, old or new. There are better books out there on vending - this one is a waste of time & money.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative for New -to-IEP process parents.......2007-04-11

I used this while preparing for my autistic son's transition to kindergarten IEP meeting. I feel that it provides a good base on the things parents need to concentrate on to ensure their child is getting the most of his/her education. Though each state has different guidelines, the templates in this book are a very valuable resource to draw from and I recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand the IEP process better.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Resource.......2004-05-06

This comprehensive, well-researched and practical guide to developing an IEP that will optimize service delivery to your child exceeded my expectations on all levels. Although useful for any parent or teacher trying to gain a better grasp of the workings of the IEP, it is especially useful for those of us dealing with autism, since the authors chose to focus on this baffling and challenging condition due to their knowledge of the subject and the many difficulties it presents to writers of IEPs. The book also discusses key legal issues associated with IEPs.

Here is a sampling of some of the areas covered in the book: A detailed, insightful discussion of each of the components of an IEP and the relationship of the components to each other; the elements necessary to prepare an effective Present Levels of Performance (PLP), which forms the basis for generating annual goals and represents a baseline against which to judge progress; why specifying underlying conditions clearly is so important; the relationship between clearly written objectives and appropriate methodology; knowledge of ASD and the way in which it affects the student who manifests it as the most basic building block of appropriate IEP development; why IEPs should specify prompt levels in the objectives as well as a system for fading them back; discussion of a "prompt hierarchy"; the need to build generalization strategies right into the objectives so the child learns a skill across a variety of settings, people, activities, etc., right from the start; breaking down multi-dimensional behavior such as "crossing the street" into its basic components so that behavior progress can be measured; how not to confuse a process with a product outcome (e.g. developing understanding vs. demonstrating understanding); the difference between accommodations and modifications (the latter reduce the standard and result in lowered educational outcomes); guidelines for prioritizing needs and sample IEPs covering such content areas as concept development, critical thinking, making inferences, etc. The above list is only a sampling of the issues covered. This book is written from a highly-informed, sensible and practical perspective. Having read this book, I feel like I'm in control of the IEP process and not vice-versa. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The best!!.......2003-06-23

It realy outlines step by step what an IEP should focus on and say from the first page to the goals and measures. It really was a good book to have along side knowing the laws and rights that other books focus on- it helps you understand how to truly make and IEP individual for your child (very ASD focused). Good for parents and administrators.

5 out of 5 stars A fantastic IEP resource!.......2002-10-27

This is the best book I have seen yet relating to IEPs for children with autism. The authors focus heavily on creating measurable goals and objectives...something I have not found in other IEP books I have read. I highly recommend this book for any parent of a child with ASD who has an upcoming IEP.

    Book Description

Ten years ago, Up Against the Wal-Marts helped smaller businesses take on the corporate retailing empire. Now, with the giants bigger and more influential than ever, the underdogs have an even tougher struggle. The second edition of Up Against the Wal-Marts is here to help, with an updated focus on marketing and brand new ways to conquer (or at least co-exist with) the Goliaths of the shopping mall.

The authors have updated many of the businesses profiled in the original edition -- so readers can see how those companies have refined their operations to stay competitive -- and they detail the best practices of hundreds of successful small companies. The book also examines several fast-growth chains in a variety of markets. With advice for improving customer service and loyalty, maximizing the power of electronic marketing, hiring and keeping great employees, and more, Up Against the Wal-Marts is a formidable strategic tool any business can use to become (and remain) competitive.

3 out of 5 stars This book was probably helpful in 1994!.......2005-01-01

I can see that this book may have added value in 1994, but it is entirely out-dated at this point. The copywrite itself is from 1994, and the examples are dated back to that point. I am interested in seeing if the customer examples they list are actually still in business. Although I am sure they are, the techniques recommended in this book are only 1/2 the story for a modern day business. Perhaps the authors could update the book, with new statistics for the Wal-Mart's of the world, along with strategies to succeed on the Internet. It is a little strange to read a book that talks about how important it is to fax, and to trim phone bills by dialing after 11pm... as I said, this book is for the dinosaurs.

5 out of 5 stars An MBA in a BOOK !!!!.......2004-01-15

I have no relationship with anyone connected with this book - it just sounds like I do. We stumbled across this book- and have now bought more than 12 copies for our key staff over three years. IT IS the BEST TRAINING BOOK for RETAIL MANAGERS I HAVE EVER SEEN. Whoops - sorry I get excited - but you get my point.

It is NOT about Wal-Mart - it is about being smart in operating your own business - and when you are smart - you have a much better chance of success.

Every chapter is solid with good info -- no fluff.

    Try it

    5 out of 5 stars A Slingshot, But at Least it's Something.......2003-07-15

The Wal-Mart behemoth-beast's unchecked onslaught on our landscapes and local economies continues, but now there is more help to at least momentarily stymie the beast. With small victories here and there (the meatcutters' union win, for one, and that decision rendered right there in ARKANSAS, no less), this is one of the books that shows how we can be as good a friend to Wal-Mart as that it is to us, and we can learn from that very intelligent, mutating virus. This book helps a person think about retailing in the shadow of Wal-Mart the way an FBI profiler thinks about a criminal. It's not fighting fire with fire, but learning the weapons of the opponent and then thinking beyond them, to a more advanced level. It's an escalating fight. But it's a fight the little guy will win because Wal-Mart is now TOO big. The little guy is far more agile.
Learned about this book at sprawl-busters.com, a very helpful site (Al Norman's book is great as well!).

5 out of 5 stars Remember the Spanish Armada.......2000-01-07

Don Taylor and Jeanne Smalling Archer explain how to prosper "in the shadow of the retail giants." This is quite literally a "how to" manual, filled with hundreds of specific examples, suggestions, strategies, and cautions which can be of substantial benefit to literally any small-to-midsize retail operation which is currently struggling to survive and then succeed. Of course, the David and Goliath metaphor is invoked. The co-authors stress the importance of courage, ten survival strategies, and "about 500 stones." (David needed only one well-placed stone. Today, he would need more "ammunition" because there are so many different "giants" to conquer. It is worth noting that David did not wrestle Goliath.) Interestingly, the "Big Three" (Wal-Mart, Kmart, and Target) all opened their first stores in 1962. They were not the first discounters but they had learned a great deal from pioneers such as Ann and Hope, Korvettes, Zayres, Arlands, and Gibson's. Once "Davids" themselves, they eventually became "Goliaths", demonstrating (in process) the importance of the ten strategies which are examined in Up Against the Wal-Marts.

The authors organize the material according to three overriding themes: change, improve, and succeed. In the 1990s, change has been the only constant. Improvement is not an option; it is an imperative. With regard to success, the co-authors leave their reader with this final statement: "Many small businesses are going to be successful competing with the giants, and we can't think of any reason why yours shouldn't be one of them."

    Book Description

At last, the first book exclusively devoted to collectibles from Standard Oil of Ohio (Sohio). The author has created a colorful gallery of Sohio cans and other containers, signs, toys, giveaways, and a complete reference to Sohio's diverse line of gas globes. These collectibles range from commonly found items to very rare, even unique finds. The book also provides a great deal of insight into the fascinating information surrounding these collectibles, including a detailed history of Sohio, a listing of its many trademarks, and a discussion of the thirty-three other descendants of the Standard Oil Company. This wonderful resource will fill a missing slot in the library of all serious historians of gas stations or automobilia.

1 out of 5 stars Nick Nack price guide for parlor collectors........2002-05-25

The book looks very promising at first glance. You get a 4 page history (nothing here). Chapter two is 50 pages of oil cans , moth spray and home drip oil cans dated through 1989. Mainly 20/30 buck stuff.(moth balls and parrifin,WOW).After pages of Maps, credit cards, calenders, salt & pepper shakers and ice scrapers, now the meat.Pumps and globes.I was ready.18 common globes pictured, I can accept that. Two whole gas pumps pictured.(50's Tokheim, wow).A small globe list.1/3 page(no pics). Then 70 pages of signs, patches, uniforms, toys. No mention of years of pumps built specifically for Sohio, the hundreds of offshute globes used. Islander lights, air machines, the stuff you drove up to are not to be found here. All the unique to Sohio station things in the 30's,40's,50's. Not pictured here.If your looking for that memory of pulling into an old "modern" Sohio, this book is a blackhole. Great icing, NO CAKE!
