3 out of 5 stars Book Need to be improved and updated.......2005-04-14

I got and read this book, taking Cisco Wireless Lan course. I was excited first but was very disappointed for first 1-3 chapters, especially for the area covering various spread spectrum and modulation techniques for 802.11a and 802.11b, very poor work and very confusing. I recommend that an excellent and easy-to-read book such as "Guide to Designing and Implementing Wireless LANs" by Ciampa (2001, From Course Technology, or to wait for "CWNA Guide to Wireless LANs" Second Edition by Ciampa) on one extreme side, to other extreme side of a highly technical or scholarly book such as "Wireless Communications: Principles and Practice" (2nd Edition) by Rapport (Prentice Hall).

My second disappointment is the absence of 802.11g even considering its publication date and the flood of other vendor's 802.11g products in market (and for 802.16 Wi-Max, especially considering the price that I paid for this book and the reputation of CISCO).

I am somewhat happy with the rest of the book, done reasonably well, on the topics but hoped that it could be done much better.

5 out of 5 stars Cisco Networking Academy Program Fundamentals of Wireless LA.......2005-04-01

"Fundamentals of Wireless LANS", published by Cisco Press, is a most appropriate title. Having read other books that were intended to have a similar fundamental-in-nature content, "Fundamentals of Wireless LANS" definitely offers more detail. The number of pages alone - almost 800, excluding appendices - are an indication right away that this book will contain a sufficient amount of detail. The reference about the book being authorized for the Cisco Networking Academy Program is also appropriate. The book is definitely geared toward the use of Cisco wireless networking equipment.

The level of experience to fully comprehend the subject matter, and to perform the exercises throughout the book, are no more than that required of someone with CCNA-level knowledge. The focus of the book is on wireless networking equipment so, there a minimal references to traditional (wired) networking equipment. Also, the infrequent reference to wired networking equipment assumes that the reader understands the function(s) of this equipment, and again, this understanding is not beyond the level of CCNA knowledge.

The reader that will find this book most useful is someone who wants to develop a solid foundation in wireless LAN principles, and wants to gain that understanding from a Cisco-centric perspective. Also, anyone pursuing the Cisco Wireless LAN specialization certification will find this book as an excellent preparatory source.

There are examples that are illustrated in the chapters, along with examples on a CD-ROM that is included with the book. The examples throughout the chapters are extremely easy to follow; so easy, that each concept can fully comprehended without the use of any actual equipment. Of course, if the reader does have access to the actual equipment (or software utility) that are referenced in the examples, that will only serve to enhance the learning. Each illustration is well thought out, that makes it very easy for someone with good self-study skills to follow. Each chapter concludes with a list of the "key terms" restate where the focus was placed. Also, to challenge and test the comprehension of the material in the chapter, there are 10 questions that serve to reinforce the subject matter. Some chapters also contain URLs to Cisco websites that offer additional materials on the equipment or subject being discussed.

The CD-ROM that is included with the book is awesome. The CD-ROM is comprised of the following components: 1)Test Engine, 2)Photo Zooms, 3)Interactive Activities, 4)Demo Activities, and 5)references to other Cisco-related WLAN resources. The "References" to other Cisco-related WLAN resources include some tools and utilities that are right on the CD-ROM.

The Test Engine on the CD-ROM is consists of 2 components: 1) Study Mode, and 2) Practice Exam. The Study Mode component contains 296 questions, and the Practice Exam includes 70 questions. The questions cover concepts presented in all 12 chapters of the book. The Study Mode allows the reader to customize the number of questions to be tested, the chapters from which the questions will come from, and the time period (number of minutes) that is allowed to answer questions.

The PhotoZooms provide photographs of the Cisco WLAN equipment that is referenced throughout the book. These photographs give a lot of credence to the cliché - a picture is worth a thousand words. Being able to the equipment that is referenced throughout the book is invaluable. Also, along with each equipment photo is a description of the equipment.

The Interactive Activities section of the CD-ROM provides 42 hands-on exercises. The exercises are a combination of dynamic and static illustrations. As the CD-ROM describes, these exercises are intended to help the reader to "...master the basic Wireless concepts." These exercises are a bonus even if the reader has access to the actual equipment.

The Demo Activities on the CD-ROM contains 13 animated exercises. Once again, providing a most needed benefit to the reader that does not possess access the actual equipment and utility software.

On the inside front cover of the book, a comment is made that this book will prepare the reader to attempt Cisco Wireless LAN Specialist certification exam. After examining the chapters' and CD-ROM content, I have to agree with this comment. In addition to certification preparation, the book is an excellent resource for gaining a healthy understanding of WLAN fundamentals.

Without hesitation, I would read (and recommend) titles from Cisco Press - this title in particular. This book is just the book that I needed to gain the solid understanding of wireless technology fundamentals that I wanted. The illustrations and practical applications afforded me an understanding about wireless networking that I hadn't been able to glean from other books; books that were substantial in their own way but, nevertherless, unable to provide that fundamental knowledge transfer. The rating that I would assign the book would be a 5 - on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being the highest.

4 out of 5 stars A Logical and Clear Wireless Guide.......2004-05-03

The Cisco Network Academy Program book on Wireless Networking entitled "Fundamentals of Wireless LANs" published by Cisco Press is developed for a specific audience. Normally, any Cisco Press book is geared towards individuals in the network arenas; and while many of these books are even more specific in nature, and geared to a defined set of individuals, with this book they do not forget that there are generalists that are also involved in the particular network environment that this book covers. Most of the time, possessing sufficient general knowledge of networking and how items interoperate, you can understand the text's intentions and learn from it. A key ingredient in understanding this book is to realize that wireless networking is in of itself not specific to a platform or concept, but a globally desired resource.

An initial glance of the book was used to determine what the book had to offer and whether it was worth reading. This basic scan revealed that wireless technology and the deployment of this technology is not as simple as plugging in an access point and configuring your client card. The figures and tables provide excellent examples of the importance of the process and understanding needed to deploy a wireless environment. If you look at the back cover for an overview, you are only led to believe this book is designed to assist an individual in preparing for a certification from Cisco Systems as a wireless specialist, but this book contains so much more.

I believe that this book is a must have for any individual researching the wireless networking environment, how it interoperates, and is developed; or for anyone responsible for an already established network. Having personal knowledge of deploying a large scale WLAN environment in the past and supporting it on a global basis, I wish this book had been available two years ago when I had to plan, execute and train individual network engineers on the fundamentals of a wireless network. The concepts and skills needed by any individual to develop and support any wireless environment are different from those needed for a basic network; and thus, this book helps not only educate the individual but also explains the do's and don'ts, the why's and why not's, that matter in an Radio Frequency (RF) environment.

The book is divided into five (5) clear sections (Background, Equipment, Site Security and Preparation, Managing, and finally an Appendix), each dealing with specifics. While at times this book is clearly a Cisco product and designed towards the Cisco Aironet product line as best demonstrated in Part II where the book mentions specific parts and components of the Aironet products, it still provides the general principles for designing and establishing a WLAN network regardless of vendor. With each section new information clearly builds on prior information, but also is general enough to allow an individual to only use that section. For example, in Chapter 4 Wireless Topologies, the chapter builds on prior items like wireless radio technology of Chapter 3 and the background of Part I, yet it is still independent enough to provide an understanding of how to deploy a wireless environment.

This book does come with a supplemental CD that offers several components like demos and interactive labs, in addition to a practice exam to help you prepare for the actual Cisco exam. While the practice exam questions gave me a feel for the actual exam I found the rest of the CD of no additional benefit in supplementing what was covered within the book itself. What this book makes up for in specifics of itself, its' CD lacks several features that could make it better. Among these features are audio explanations of the examples and demos. Since Cisco Press used Macromedia™ for the interactive demos and labs, it would seem only logical to include audio in the demos. I found this item a bit disconcerting and it made my exploration of the demos a bit more difficult. Otherwise, the CD is well structured and an excellent help, especially in preparing for the certification itself.

Overall, even with the problems of the CD itself, I would highly recommend this book to any individual consider adding an understanding of the wireless environment or just looking for an excellent reference book on the subject. If they are only adding to their library for the understanding of wireless networking and the need to support it; even if they are not pursuing a Cisco certification in wireless this book is a clear must have.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent source for Wireless LANs config, troubleshooting.......2004-05-03

This is a very comprehensive book meant for beginners, as well as experts in need of a practical guide for designing deploying and troubleshooting wireless LANs. The book has a very comprehensive explanation of various aspects of the wireless technologies. The first few chapters are very good source of information for those who are novices in this field. They emphasize the need for wireless LAN's, different components used in the deployment of a wireless LAN, and the various challenges in such a deployment. The next few chapters go into detail explanation of the wireless technology, the various components like access points, bridges, antenna etc, and also explain the various wireless topologies, the security challenges and the available options.

The book has a very practical approach towards teaching the topics. It explains the concepts with practical examples and references to real world situations. The last 2 chapters are a very good source of reference for those who are in process of deployment of a wireless LAN for their company or their SOHO.

Apart from this, the book also aids in preparing for the Cisco wireless LAN support specialist exam. The book is meant for all types of readers, from students to professionals and has a very organized structure, with each chapters focusing on the important concepts, components and functions of wireless LANs.

The companion CD-ROM with the book has some very useful articles and graphical demos, which supplement the book. The CD-ROM also has a good collection of questions meant to help in preparing for the Cisco Wireless LAN support specialist exam.

I would highly recommend the book for anyone who is either studying or working in the field of networking, and for people who are into wireless networking this is book is a must have....

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars History of CDMA .......2007-02-09

Good general overview of how CDMA was born and the history that has lead the company up to this point. Needed more detail around the complexities of licensing CDMA technology and the behind the door events than transformed the industry. Too general in some senses but a good read for someone looking to understand the wireless business.

4 out of 5 stars Story of how the Telecom Industry was Revolutionized.......2005-05-06

Dave Mock did an excellent job of giving a good, accurate telling story of how a small start-up company in San Diego revolutionized the telecom industry. The book does not talk so much about the company, the technology, or the business model that made it successful, but rather describes in more narrative manner of the story behind the scenes, its history dating back from decades ago. The book describes in details the numerous technical and business challenges that Qualcomm encountered during the early stages of the endeavor and how the company managed to overcome these obstacles.

Although Qualcomm's story is about how CDMA came about, the book is suitable for both the technical and non-technical audiences as it circumspect more about the entrepreneurship side and what made it work for a group of renowned academic individuals in becoming businessmen. The book is suitable for readers in the wireless industry as well as entrepreneurs trying to look for key ingredients in starting a successful company.

4 out of 5 stars An important work on IS-95.......2005-04-24

In The Qualcomm Equation Dave Mock does an excellent job of reporting the company's technological and financial history. The first half of the book,"The Radical Technology Solution", interweaves different story lines as well as Brooks did when he presented AT&T's complicated history in Telephone. Mock handles well the difficult job of keeping a cogent narrative flowing while discussing different elements: the founders, their funding, the competition, and the technology itself.

As with Brooks, Mock is not an employee of the company he writes about, nor is this a corporate sponsored biography. Still, having been granted special access to Qualcomm people and papers, he seems at times too favorable to Qualcomm, jeopardizing the validity of conclusions he draws. Never-the-less, the factual reporting he presents is quite strong; there is information here on CDMA development in mobile telephony not found anywhere else.

Part Two: The Intellectual Property Business, explores how IP promotion and control helped Qualcomm become a worldwide company. It's fascinating, to a degree, but I am a technology historian, not a business manager. I feel unable to comment on Part Two's validity but it is obviously well researched.

Gripes? A bizarre Foreword from George Gilder. You'll see :-) And a one-sided approach to covering Qualcomm which is perhaps a structural problem; this book wasn't meant to be a comparative history or to tell the story of another company. Q's decision to withhold payment to Korea's ETRI, later overturned in arbitration to the cost of $80 million, for example, could be viewed as a smart decision by Q to save their stockholders money, or a robber-baron like action intent on defrauding a group that had a legitimate right to be paid. A reader of this book can't tell because we don't have ETRI's position. Nor Qualcomm's legal department. The success of Qualcomm may indeed be based on all the positive things Mock tells us, but it also could be founded, in part, on aggressive lawyers and a bankroll big enough to buy out or shut down competition when threatened.

Positives? An excellent index. Nice, bright paper. A good bibliography and a detailed time-line. 231 pages of good information. Most important, the arrival of Dave Mock as a first class technology historian.

While the history of TDMA based GSM and IS-54/IS-136 is documented in hardcopy and on the web, CDMA based IS-95 has not been covered well until now. This book should be considered an essential title for anyone working in or investigating cellular radio.

4 out of 5 stars If you want to know how Qualcomm became Qualcomm, this is it.......2005-04-08

Qualcomm is the Microsoft of the telecoms industry, for better and for worse. You either love the company or you hate the company; I'm leaning toward the latter, so please keep this in mind.

First, you have to give the company credit for getting to where it is today. Dave Mock does an excellent and meticulous job of documenting Qualcomm's against-all-odds rise to the top of the telecoms industry. I did not realize the degree to which Qualcomm relied on government business in the early days and also did not realize just how close the company came to missing the cellular boat completely. Back when Europe set in place one standard and many in the US wanted to follow suit, Qualcomm stuck to its guns.

And I think that the US is better off for it.

By and large, the mixed-standards "mess" that we have in the US has turned out to be a pretty good thing. Because of competing standards, we have EV-DO, which is a much-faster technology than single-standard Europe has to offer. Competing technologies keeps everyone on their toes, and Qualcomm has certainly kept the GPRS vendors on their toes. Dave Mock does a great job of documenting this drama and making sense of the very complex technical standards and jargon.

Mock is perhaps too kind to Qualcomm, particularly in the latter years, as the vendor transforms from David to Goliath. For example, the company has been in an all-out war with Wi-Fi and WiMAX over the past three years, and it is only recently that we now see the company starting to co-opt some of the same technology underlying WiMAX. Qualcomm recently ditched its much-hyped EVDV technology when it became brutally apparent that carriers want IP and big pipes, something WiMAX was designed to address from the ground up. I find Qualcomm to be a little lost these days, as if it is searching for another big bully to take on again; the trouble is, Qualcomm is now the big bully and it's taking on the types of innovators that it once was.

That said, anyone in the telecoms industry who wants to know how Qualcomm got to be Qualcomm should read this book.

There are technical mistakes that conflict with information in the Cisco Networking Academy Program Fundamentals of Wireless LANs Companion Guide. Book is helpful in reviewing, but not very well thought out. Mainly the book is comprised of a short chapter summery, reveiw questions, and vocabulary term fill-ins. If this book was edited better I'd like it. Not worth $22, but luckly I only paid $14.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive overview of the wireless web:.......2004-02-19

Craig does a great job in taking a complex web of ideas and making it understadnable for the layperson. If you are in need of undertanding how wireless will effect you and your company. If you are looking for methodologies for responding to this opportuinity, you should read this book.

2 out of 5 stars How to save cost with Wireless Tech, NOT!.......2003-07-21

Its quite obvious that the book was written during the dot com boom years, where money was abundant, and the outlook, ridiculously optimistic. Settle throws numbers like a child throws tantrums, the book is strewn wif figures which are both purile and outlandish... with high hopes of being able to recoup your investment within the month.

The book starts off explaining abt the available wireless technology out there. Then proceeds to expound on how wireless technology can save cost, across every single facet of your (thats the extra star for the review, else I'll give it a 1) business. But guess what, after all the talk on cost savings, surprise, surprise, there's a chapter on what - COST SAVINGS.

If you are a wireless technopreneur who is brain dead in finding ways to sell wireless technology and use them, maybe you can give this book a try. However, your target market will probably be big 5 companies with idle cash lying around to optimize their business and save more cost by going wireless, provided, naturally that they put up that initial investment for de 'change' (which oh yeah, can be earned back almost overnight).

Or if you're a brain dead CTO to a huge conglemerate that needs ideas on how to use wireless technology (to impress your CEO) then by all means go ahead, buy this book. IMHO, going wireless or not doesnt matter, its not the issue here. The issue is that this book is just an old rehash on how 'Technology A' can save/gain u a gazillion dollars if you do implement it. But I have to give credit to the author, he does warn the audience with questions on whether his 'proposed' solutions are prudent or not. Im all for going wireless, its just that u cant help but to feel patronized by Settles, not only by the obviousness of his writing, but the outlandish case scenarios that he brings forth.

Craig Settles is a purveyor (the word purveyor appears so many times it should have been edited out) of technology, so be warned, and he probably already made his money by endorsing AvantGo, BlueBerry and Richocet networks throughout the WHOLE book that it gets tiresome, oh sure, there are some quotes on other businesses out there, probably as an after thought.

To misquote Settles, at 20.97, if 1000 executives were to buy this book, it would cost 20,970 dollars. However, if you put that money in a bank at 2% interest for the next 5 years, oh my you would have made, 24,00xx... erm.. and gained... erm... nevermind, it doesnt matter. Just like the book.

5 out of 5 stars Great Introduction to Wireless.......2002-12-02

Wireless, Inc. is a clear and rational introduction to the wireless world, and one that should find an audience among technologists and generalists alike. It focuses on companies who have wrestled with these constantly evolving technologies and achieved real results. If you're looking for hype about the next "revolution," look elsewhere. If you're looking for useful advice and practical insight into the power and potential of wireless technology, look no further. I found the section on strategic options especially useful, primarily because the author pays closer attention to the fundamentals of business than he does to tracking the latest gizmo fads. This book is easily the best I've found yet on using wireless and mobile technologies to impact the entire enterprise.

4 out of 5 stars Important guidance for anyone considering wireless data.......2002-11-22

This is a terrific book for anyone who is considering an effort to "mobilize" their workforce. Lots of great how-to advice on on wireless data can deliver real, quantifiable ROI for any corporation. My company followed the guidelines in this book, and we've increased productivity by enabling any time, any where access to corporate data. We also saved significant dollars on the implementation of our system by following the book's advice on common mistakes to avoid. Highly recommended for both CIOs and CFOs.
