Dan Poynter's Self-Publishing Manual, 16th Edition: How to Write, Print and Sell Your Own Book (Self Publishing Manual)
ASIN: 093849743X |
Book Description
There has never been a self publishing manual like this.
Aiming at Amazon is NOT about getting your book into bookstores. Instead, it lays out an innovative approach focused almost entirely on sales at Amazon.com. It tells exactly how to make a nonfiction book sell well online, with tips never before offered in print.
This book is also NOT about working with a "self publishing company." It introduces the printer/distributor used by almost all those companies themselves -- the one they keep secret so they can be middlemen and charge you double.
Forget bookstores. And forget self publishing companies. Let Aiming at Amazon reveal to you the NEW business of self publishing.
Customer Reviews:
Aaron is leading us to the promised land.......2007-10-16
Okay there are now over 200,000 books published each year in the US (according to some statistic) and many of these are self-published or published via the POD (print-on-demand) subsidy presses. In other words there are thousands of PODpeople wandering around the desert wondering why the bookstores won't take their books! "Because POD books are non-returnable" say the lords of the bookselling world. "And besides, they're overpriced."
"Help us" chant the PODpeople.
Aaron Shepard appears and says to the flock: "Behold, you do not have to sell your book thru bookstores! You do not have pay exorbitant prices to the subsidy publishers! Behold, I will part the Amazon river for you and you shall proceed to the promised land!"
Then comes about 30 pages of technical stuff. I should have read those pages even tho I suffer from technophobia. See, Aaron says your title letters should be big and thick so they show up better in postage stamp size thumbprint on the screen. He is right.
When I created "Crafting the Travel Guidebook" I used Lightning Source for the printing but had the cover done by a pro. We ended up with white lettering on the cover. Looked good on the monitor but when downsized to Amazon picture size the lettering looks spindly. I should have listened to Aaron.
If you are computer savvy you can do your whole book in Word by following the instructions in this book. If not, get someone else to do it. But the basic concept is sound--and revolutionary. If you can't get into bookstores then go straight to the online stores--and don't give them the 55% discount that used to be reserved for wholesalers. Give them less. Put a reasonable price on your book. Don't write a long book (write lots of short ones).
Obviously this works much better with targeted non-fiction books than for the author who thinks his novel will win the Pulitzer Prize. But for a large number of self-publishers this is a viable way to attain steady, sober, long-term success. And it certainly beats the unbalanced world of regular publishing where a few titles sell millions of copies while thousands of returned books of the also-rans pine away in warehouses and garages.
Way to go Aaron! Who knew a revolution would be this quiet?
Aaron tells you all the secrets he learned the hard way!.......2007-09-28
Planning to self-publish your book? Aaron teaches you how to bypass all the middle-men. Believe, I know - I published my first book through a publishing service (you'd know the name), and it was so easy. And it was FREE. BUT, by using them my book had to be priced too high to sell: $21.98 for a 228-page paperback novel. After reading Aiming at Amazon I learned how I could cut my retail price in half, yet still make a decent profit. I have just published the second edition of my first mystery novel, along with my second and third novels using the advice in this book. Check out one of them here:Hideaway Hospital Murders (Greg Tenorly Mystery Series, Book 2). I highly recommend Aiming at Amazon. Frankly, I'm surprised he's sharing the information instead of just keeping it to himself for his own use. So, if you're planning to self-publish your book, don't do anything else until you read this book!
Aiming at Amazon: The NEW Business of Self Publishing, or How to Publish Books for Less, Sell Without Hassle, and Double Your Pr.......2007-09-19
I have reread this book three times and plan to go thru it a couple of more times. Enlightening!
An invaluable reference guide.......2007-09-04
I have recently gone through the process of publishing a non-fiction book now listed on Amazon. Fortunately I came across this book just as I had completed my writing. Throughout the roughly six-month process of defining a market strategy and implementing it, Aiming at Amazon has been sitting next to my desk rather than on the bookshelf. Aaron Shepard is one of those rare "self-help" authors who provide common-sense, practical advice rather than just rah-rah bromides and useless pep talks. If you are self-publishing, start here.
So good if you are a competitor I hope you don't read it!.......2007-09-01
I am an experienced publishing exec with numerous NYT bestsellers in my past, but Aaron Shepherd has changed the way I look at publishing. A truly great book.
Oh, and did you notice that to scroll down to the customer reviews you first had to get past the best Amazon page you have ever seen? And that's just one reason to buy this book.
Book Description
This book is written for investors and lenders who do not have a background in consumer finance, yet who wish to participate in this new form of interpersonal finance. It describes how to become a passive lender on Prosper.com by using standing orders to automate the process of finding and bidding on unsecured loan requests. The author's primary goal is to enable small-time lenders to be able to earn a second income from employing some of their risk capital.
Customer Reviews:
Nothing New Here - Save Your Money.......2007-08-30
This is a very small book with lots of white space (I read it in less than an hour). Moreover, the author does not add hardly anything that is not available on the Prosper web site or Prosper forums. What the author does add is a lot of fear about consumer lending and constant warnings about how lending is risky business and you may lose everything! Read the Prosper web site and save your money.
Great book, lots of honest information about lending on Prosper.com.......2007-03-03
Roger Steciak does a great job describing and sharing tips for lending on Prosper.com. The book is full of honest information that should be a must read before anyone even thinks about lending in this People-to-People arena. When I started the book, I thought "Who would do this?" There were so many warnings in the beginning, but then as I finished the book, I realized that it was refreshing to both learn alot and be told both the good and bad scenarios possible. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning more about Prosper.com, thinking of becoming a lender, or currently lending on Prosper.com. You will definately learn something new.

Net Entrepreneurs Only: 10 Entrepreneurs Tell the Stories of Their Success
ASIN: 0071355790 |
Amazon.com
If leadership by example is the best way to inspire, you'll find plenty of inspiration in Striking it Rich.com. Rather than write another how-to-build-a-better-Web-site guide, Los Angeles Times columnist Jaclyn Easton profiles 23 successful sites, detailing what has brought these firms to their current status.
For those who think reading the stories of Motorcycle Online and HorseNet holds little interest for what they're trying to accomplish, Easton advises in her introduction that a site's content is irrelevant--it's how the business is run that matters. The one point Easton hammers throughout these profiles is that all the site owners are passionate about their businesses--a quality more important than such buzzwords as "interactivity" and "stickiness."
All of the subjects tell fascinating yet strikingly similar tales en route to becoming "incredibly successful" (though Easton's use of the term is a bit fuzzy). All of the profile subjects conducted extensive research and think more about how to serve their customers than what type of animation to include on their site. It's hard not to be inspired by a successful Web company whose business offers auctions of remnant steel (Weirton Steel).
For anyone who isn't sure how to make a Web-based business a success, Striking it Rich.com is essential reading. --John Frederick Moore

Web advertising basics.......2006-02-28
Strikingitrich.com looks at more than 200 companies that are using their Web sites to conduct business and make money.
The author of this book offers the reader much in the form a Web advertising basics. For example, the author lists terms that one needs to know about Web advertising:
· Banner ad: a small advertisement that is hot-linked to an advertiser's web site.
· Click though: occurs when a visitor clicks on a banner and is taken to the advertiser's site.
· Impression: occurs when a banner ad is seen by a visitor; three ads on a page count as thee impressions.
· Link: any banner, button, or text that, when clicked, takes visitors to another site.
· Pay per click: pricing model based on click throughs rather than number of impressions.
· Visitor: total number of people who access a Web site over a period of time.
The author combines important technical information about web advertising, such as explaining what is a "Hit," with important information on what various highly successful companies are doing to make money using their Web sites.
An Historical Perspective of Web Businesses.......2006-01-12
In the hey-day of the Internet Gold Rush, among the dreamers and schemers, there were some companies actually making money on the web - and they weren't all p-o-r-n sites.
It's outdated in 2006, as the market has matured and evolved.
This book showcases successful sites from 'back in the day,' and how they made money. It would be interesting to research how many are still in business, how many were sold to bigger players, and how many evolved into what they are today under the same ownership.
Today, the internet is rising again.......2005-04-05
Although this book is relatively dated in internet time, it holds the key to success in the e-world. Just as generals study the history of warfare and key battles, you should study the history of what worked and didn't work during the early e-commerce days.
Today, the internet is rising again and is being positioned to truly set us free as we enter the age of wireless. It won't be the strongest who thrive in this new age, it will be those who are most flexible and adaptable.
Many of us are captivated by the headlines of only a few major published e-commerce success stories. In fact, there are many more real success stories of companies racking up impressive sales without headlines.
In StrikingItRich.com, Easton highlights 23 such companies:
As you can see, this book is not a how-to book in the traditional sense. Instead, Easton shows us real life success stories of people just like you. Prepare yourself to be completely motivated, inspired and revved up to take on the world.
Michael Davis, Editor - Byvation
An interesting look at small and effective successes.......2002-12-29
This book is a product of the Internet boom / bubble and not all of these seb businesses have survived. However, a surprising number have. Some were sold while others evolved one way or the other. It is quite an interesting to read about how these businesses viewed their markets at the height of the boom and then look at how things are today.
I think the book has a couple of good points to make. These sites were not funded by huge amounts of venture capital. They are all small sites that have done well for people who had a specific expertise, who thought small in a tightly focused way, and who used the web to broaden their reach to a proven client base.
There are thousands of successful sites just like these and this type of thing can be done thousands of more times by intelligent business people. My advice, however, is that unless you really KNOW what your plan and goals are, don't spend your hard earned cash until you are certain you have minimized your uncertainties. Of course, to be an entrepreneur is to have more risk than regular folks are willing to take on. But spend more time getting ready and learning your business rather than recklessly diving in head first to see how deep the pond is. If you don't you could end up spending a lot of money on a website that will be nothing but a drain on your precious cash and time.
Book Description
A definitive roadmap for implementing effective supply chain management
Strategic sourcing redefines the traditional approach to buying and using materials and services. Purchasing and supplier programs are receiving substantial attention in current professional literature, but there is little information on implementing supplier strategies and techniques.
Harnessing Value in the Supply Chain offers a specific, step-by-step approach to the strategic sourcing process, developed by the author at Southern California Edison. This unique reference provides expert guidance on designing, launching, executing, evaluating, and maintaining a sourcing project. It includes illustrations, examples, and templates for immediate use. Finally, supply chain management and strategic sourcing are presented in a usable, comprehensive, and cost-effective framework.
To illustrate this approach, the book describes the experience of Southern California Edison, a utility company that achieved $150 million in annual cost reduction through a strategic sourcing program. The story is told from the perspective of the people who led the revolutionary change at SCE, as wellas the suppliers. A detailed method on how to duplicate SCE's success is included in the book.
This book is unique in that it fully traces a strategic sourcing initiative from conception to implementation-and it is the only book that documents the SCE story. Harnessing Value in the Supply Chain is a powerful tool that will help organizations optimize their resources and develop relationships to sustain effective supply chain management.

ONE WOULD HAVE EXPECTED MORE GUIDANCE FROM A BOOK TITLED "YOUR GUIDE..."
I would not recommend this book.......2006-04-11
The book is ok, if you have extra money to spend and you want to read all there is. But, I can not recommend it for Amazon or other sellers like Half or ABE, because it is totally outdated. It was probally a good starting book in it's time, as it was written in 2002. There are some other books much better written and much more content. I would not waste my money. Sorry!

An Encyclopedia of Information.......2004-01-08
The book is simply superb. It is packed with valuable information presnted in an understandable, enjoyable format, and it contains great humor--which not only makes learning enjoyable, but increases the effectiveness of teaching actual content.
I have spent all of my life as an educator, and am constantly reviewing instructional materials. It is extremely rare to find an author that can break down complex material in such a manner that it is understandable to someone with little or no knowledge in the content area. To have that level of material presented in a sytle that makes learning fun as well as productive, is almost unheard of. Yet, that is exactly what Rob Weinberg has done in this book.
I enthusiastically recommned this book to anyone considering doing business on the Internet, anyone looking to invest in that market, and to professors and students in business schools throughout the country.
Not serious enough or detailed enough.......2003-01-17
This book has a lot of unique advice and information on starting up a company and creating an entire business plan, for either an outside investor, just a family member, or internal use only. However, it was not really focused on Dot Com companies like I hoped, and the tone of the book was much too joking for my liking. I like the Dummies books in general, which also offer jokes, but the author went a little overboard here. Too much of the text is fluff, which wastes time while reading each section. Also, I would have preferred serious and real life business plan examples in the appendix. Like I said, some of the advice is really useful when you find it, and it is written in a very easy to read by anyone manner, which might be helpful for some. I just expected a lot more judging by the reviews here.
A MUST READ for anyone revising their business plan.......2001-12-22
Whether for the entrepreneur or the established business, this is THE book to use when revising a business plan. Weinberg hits the mark again and again, and does so in a way that makes the reader feel he is speaking with an old friend - bad jokes and all. I have been recommending this book to everyone I know.
StreetSmart Internet Planning.......2001-11-20
For those of us who are street smart when it comes to entrepreneurship.
Don't be afraid of the title. Buy the book!.......2001-09-26
Don't let the somewhat unwieldy title put you off: the book delivers exactly what the title says it will. Weinberg's book is written in a friendly, conversational tone that is easy to digest. Another reviewer noted that he read Weinberg's book in a weekend. That is easy to do. Weinberg is a natural teacher. You may pick up his book expecting something akin to shoveling snow uphill in a New England winter but instead you find a voice that charms and entertains you, all the while teaching you what you need to know about getting your .com business up and running. I strongly recommend this book.
Book Description

You'll find detailed information on "virtual" government agencies and free publications, resources for young entrepreneurs, management and recruitment Web sites, incubators, marketing and advertising, and even more.

How to Write A .com Business Plan: .......2006-09-19
A good guide to start organizing ideas. Especially Part 2 - "Directory"- include a lot of very helpful links (almost 50 pages ! ) But , I think examples and some statements are poor and repeated several times . In addition , section Financial projections and Financial Management Plan is presented in VERY high level and can't be used for real business plan creation.
Excellent guide for starting up an e-company.......2001-01-12
Having been through the wringer, and witnessed several friends try to do the same, I feel that this book covers the necessary steps for starting, and continuing, a successful e-company. Having a good checklist is essential, doing it with a good sense of humor is always a plus. The interviews brought the material to life where normal examples would have been boring. Nicely done.
Excellent Basic How-to-get-started book.......2001-01-11
This is not one of those dry books where you are immediately lost after the first page. This is an excellent resource for beginners like myself, who are thinking about starting a dot com and don't have the foggiest idea about how to go about it. Ms. Eglash has researched the sites and subject for you, giving you a head start on the process. There is also some practical advise from real people who have been there already. I look forward to a follow-up book.
The Perfect Book for those contemplating a dot com business........2001-01-10
I was looking for a book that wouldn't intimidate me. This book gave me the guidelines and structure I needed to get going on the process without overwhelming me with useless details. I found what I needed in a quick and consise manner. This book presents the basics in a user friendly way. Where else would I find interviews with such a variety of experts like Guy Kawasaki? I highly recommend this book to those of you who want to create a successful dot com business.

Facinating Book for a beginner.......2003-04-01
I rented this book in Library, its contents were excellent. Author gives a detail explanation about How to create business plan. I like this book, am ordering for my own copy in Amazon!!
Piece of Junk - Dont waste your dollars on this one.......2002-07-24
I got duped into buying this one based on the rave reviews here and elsewhere. It is very superficial in its treatment of the subject and there are errors - For eg., one of the earlier chapters talks about Valuation Analysis and how it will be covered in a later chapter. There is no such coverage of Valuation later in the book.
To summarize: Dont waste your precious dollars on this one.
Underrated..........2002-01-19
There should exist a higher rating for this introductory book on setting up an ebusiness. The author explains the basics of starting a business, and integrates setting up an ebusiness. I've read other books but most are not as well-written, concise, with a no-nonsense approach to giving the reader exactly what he needs to know to set up an ebusiness. For the novice, or the experienced business person, wanting to set up an ebusiness, this is the best book I've seen. Easy, quick reading, and excellent advice.
How to create an effective "Dot.com" business plan.......2001-07-05
Internet based businesses and business with a significant Internet component to their commercial activities are with us to stay. As with any other major revolution in how goods and services are generated, marketed, distributed, and provided, there is a critical need for a comprehensive, authoritative, "user friendly" introduction and guide for the aspiring entrepreneur as to how best to prepare for, and take advantage, of what the new technologies have to offer and can best be utilized. Tim Burns' Entrepreneurship.com is precisely that kind of "how to" manual deftly showing how to identify, evaluate, and capitalize on the new opportunities the computer age of the Internet has to offer; how to create an effective "Dot.com" business plan; the acquisition of financing (including venture capital); and transforming an existing "bricks and mortar" company into an "E-business".
Back to Basics.......2001-02-24
As I write this, the Nasdaq has fallen below 2200. This would be a horrible time to come out with one of those arrogant, jargon-filled, air-headed books celebrating Internet mania.
Fortunately, Tim Burns instead takes a back-to-basics approach to Internet entrepreneurship. He correctly identifies the genuine characteristics of the New Economy, e.g., "The new organizational wealth no longer centers around physical capital but around intellectual capital." (p. 22) But he advocates traditional business discipline rather than throwing the rulebook out the window.
In theory, a book about starting an Internet business might have to cover economic theory, business strategy, accounting, law, and finance, as well as describe the technical features and business implications of the Internet. In practice, an author has to pick and choose.
Burns puts emphasis on
--analysis of business opportunities (particularly in chapter 2, where he contrasts ten fallacies of Internet entrepreneurship with he calls the "reality-based Internet business model.")
--advice about creating a business plan
--principles of accounting (Burns' background is particularly strong here)
On the other hand, the discussions of Internet marketing tactics tend to be few and far between. Someone seeking advice on designing and promoting a web site or on email marketing would have to look elsewhere.
I think that this book best serves someone who never went to business school and who wants to fill in some knowledge gaps before launching a new enterprise. It's a lot less expensive than going back for your MBA.
Average customer rating:
- Very well written guide to getting up and running
- A Treasure Map for Ambitious Entrepreneurs
- A great roadmap for starting a business
- The must-have bible for new entrepreneurs.

Great Book-Very Interesting...........2001-04-04
Being a lawyer in NYC, I was very impressed with some Inside the Minds: Interne Lawyers. Although it is impossible to cover every Internet related topic, the book does a good job at covering some very interesting topics. In addition, the individuals portrayed in the book represent a good cross sampling of different talents related to Internet law. I particularly enjoyed the interview with Mark Fischer at Palmer & Dodge. If you are a woman, make sure to also check out Inside the Minds: Leading Women.
