great book.......2007-09-27
It's a great textbook for a Nutrition class, down to earth, clear explanations, lots of extras.
missing things.......2007-09-22
This item didn't come with the codes needed for nutrition classes so in the end it costed double what I would have spent at full price in the book store at my university.
good.......2007-09-17
Good condition, but it didn't come with the cd and I really needed it for the class. I bought it new from amazon, but had to return it.
Needed it for class.......2007-09-15
Book is not bad. Make sure you get the study guide that comes with it. You'll need it. If you don't get the study guide, it will cost more separately and you will have to study harder to pass the tests.
It's, well, easy to digest........2007-05-07
All jokes aside, while students may gripe about having to shell out the bucks for this textbook, it is well worth the money.
I've got an earlier edition and have used it a lot in the past. I found the later editions to be very up to date and quite useful as a reference for some of the clinical questions I encounter while working with patient education issues. In the days of picky insurance reimbursement, it's vital that all the stuff we do be based on sound clinical information showing that what we do is indeed effective.
Easy to understand and a well laid-out text with many good illustrations, there's a good reason its a standard in the field. Can also recommend The Sixty-Second Motivator as a patient education tool to get people motivated to make healthy changes. After all, what good is dietary advice if nobody follows it?

TCM for Geeks.......2007-09-12
Reading this book is like talking to a geek. If you enjoy conversations with geeks and learn a lot from them, this is the Chinese medicine book for you. If you tend to find such conversations confusing, dense, and boring, well, that's probably what you'll think of _The Web That Has No Weaver_ as well.
Excellent TCM Text for those with Scientfic Background.......2007-07-09
I'm surprised by some of the highly critical reviews here. I think this book is a wonderfully informative, eye-opening tome of an introduction to traditional chinese medicine. *If* you have a strong western science backgroud. For laypeople, it is a poor choice.
But the information you need is there, organized logically, and from a very analytical western scientific standpoint. The discussion of tcm as an entirely different science is particularly interesting.
Explaination.......2007-01-23
Oriental Medicine, is it all just phooey or is it ancient remedy for both past and modern ailments? Not scientifical backed, though proven, is not chemical, nor physical, but deeply spiritual, but hey this is a teen talking to you, currently rooting himself in Tai Chi and Accupressure. Chemicals and bonded elements/medication ... too much for you> The Web That Has No Weaver will immerse you in a world, easing the confusion. Want to know the aspects and components of spirit, Chi/Qui, Meridians,... read this guide and find out.
Perfect for the Ambitious Layman.......2007-01-12
Ted J. Kaptchuk's "The Web That Has No Weaver" is a fancinating and informative read that challanges the layman's understanding of Traditional Chinese Medicine without getting bogged down by cultural discrpancies or technical jargon. Reading through the original text is fun and comprehensive; but for a deeper understanding of contemporary issues as they relate to the topic, the reader can look to the detailed footnotes and appendices.

Excellent Book!.......2007-08-23
This is an excellent detailed book on fats. For all those people who think that fats are the culprit in our diet, read this. It tells the facts on the number of different fats there are, their chemical makeup, and how they react within the human body. The only terrible fat is partically hydrogenated fat (transfats). And it explains how these transfats are made and why they hold the term "trans." Don't listen to current hype. Read from a person with a PhD in biochemistry.
A necessary, if a little dry, primer about fats.......2007-06-13
Mary Enig is perhaps the world's foremost expert on fats, and Know Your Fats sets straight many of the misconceptions and mistakes commonly presented about the fat we eat. Here is the "go to" book for everything fat related.
No other component of our diet is so misunderstood. We buy awful-tasting low-fat and fat-free products under the guise that less fat in our diets means a slimmer, healthier body. Big Pharmaceutical companies churn out cholesterol-lowering and fat-blocking drugs that interfere with our body's functions. One study showed that a quarter of non-college educated adults believe we should completely eliminate fat from our diets.
That's why we need books like Know Your Fats. Everyone, regardless of their interest in nutrition or biochemistry, needs a solid understanding about lipids.
This isn't beach reading. You won't carry Know Your Fats on your next Hawaiian cruise. It's serious, technical stuff, even if Enig explains things lucidly and concisely. I don't know if a book about lipids can be "fun," and Enig doesn't try (save for one particular amusing bit about CLA). Hard but definitely accessible material.
Had Enig paired with a good editor - and for sure, the book could use some editing - Know Your Fats could have been more lively and possibly reach a broader audience.
As it stands, I imagine the only people purchasing will be nutrition and biochemistry students and scholars. But with the ubiquitous misinformation about lipids, everyone could use a good primer on the subject, and this is one of the best.
Fats Info.......2007-06-13
As a nutritionist, I read extensively on various aspects of nutrition. I have taken a particular interest in fats because of the dangers and bene-
fits of using certain fats. I consider Dr. Enig to be the authority on fats in North America. She gives an unbiased view on the subject. I credit her with much of my knowledge on fats and oils. I highly recom-
mend her book.
Gratefully yours,
Athey.

UNDERSTANDING NORMAL AND CLINICAL NUTRITION, Seventh Edition, provides the most current and comprehensive coverage of both "normal" nutrition, such as digestion and metabolism, vitamins and minerals, and life cycle nutrition, as well as "clinical" nutrition related to diseases, such as nutrition and gastrointestinal, liver, and cardiovascular diseases. The text also incorporates a number of learning tools designed to help students both retain the information and apply their knowledge so they are better prepared to work in a clinical setting. Features include case studies, "How To" boxes with examples of problem-solving in real world situations, and study questions that further conceptual understanding of the material. Regardless of the students' course background, the text is organized and written in a clear, easy to follow format that will engage and enable them to be actively involved in the field of nutrition.

SOUND ADVICE.......2007-08-21
I thoroughly enjoyed the read. The book was provacative, informative, interesting and captivating. However, not all the advice was new, some apepars to have been recycled.
But overall I was satisfied. I feel healthier already.
For those interested in improving their overall health I also recommend You: On A Det. You: On A Diet: The Owner's Manual for Waist Management
Excellent Resource, even beyond class.......2006-11-10
First of all, I am fascinated by nutrition. It's a pretty cool thing to know how food contributes to our everyday existence. With that in mind, this book is a fantastic nutrition resource and reference. I've read a lot of extracurricular nutrition guides over the years and was under the impression I had a pretty good handle on the concepts. Nope. I felt like an amateur once I got into this book. There is so much more to learn and this book lays it out into a very "digestible" format.
Excellent Book for Nutrition Class.......2006-03-20
I actually enjoy reading this book for class. Especially since the chapters are written in an informative yet easy to understand way. On the inside cover there is a quick guide to the DV of minerals and other supplements that has come in handy outside of class. Worth the money if you are looking for a textbook!
A student's opinion.......2002-04-30
This textbook is actually one that is recommended for the Nutrition course at my university. I found it very useful and informative for all aspects of the course. Information was displayed in a clear and colourful manner, which made taking it all a lot easier. The study questions at the end of each section came in very handy when revising for exams. In addition the lists of resources relating to each topic were helpful, enabling you to look at other sources for further reading. I found the 'highlights' in particular useful as they covered particular points (such as eating disorders or osteoporosis) in depth and related it to the different aspects of nutrition.
Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone with a more than cursory interest in nutritional science as it provides a great of information on the subject.
Normal and Clinical Nutrition.......2000-05-04
I found this Nutrition book to very helpful. It is very informative and easy to understand. I enjoyed this book and will most likely keep it because it can be very helpful in the future. It contains information that is very helpful

Investing for Dummies.......2005-05-03
I cant believe that I went through college without taking business or econ classes (except for political economy). This is a way for me to catch up.
I like this book because it is easy to read and understand. So easy even an elementary school kid could understand....ok maybe junior high.
Eventually I would hope to read the Intelligent Investor.
Excellent basics.......2004-12-08
This book is excellent for learning the basic concepts in investing and finance. If you would like to iniciate in this area, i recommend this book as an entry door with the basics.
The Best.......2004-05-25
As many have said in their reviews, this is a great starting point for those new to investing and financial markets. In fact, it's the best I've ever found and I've looked a lot. The simple, plain English explanations are what makes this book stand out. For the nuances and more detailed information regarding the topics in the book, look to a textbook from a college finance class. But for the person who knows very little, start with this.
Good for beginner investors.......2004-05-23
If you are new to investing and need a simple primer, read this book. It's well organized and written. Those that have invested for a while will find this book simplistic. Nevertheless, I think every beginning investor should get a copy and read it.

It's a rare book that delivers so completely on such a broad promise. Mother-Daughter Wisdom is written to connect the dots between a number of separate parts: logical and emotional morality, physical and mental health, friends and family, and in an overarching sense, the relationship between being a woman's daughter and raising a daughter of your own.
Because of the scope of information presented, it can be tricky to pick up the book and look for quick guidance on a particular topic such as adolescent weight issues or childhood asthma; more use, and more pleasure, will be found if you add it to your permanent reference shelf to look through in stages. Author Dr. Christiane Northup (Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom) seamlessly blends personal stories with clear research in a way that creates a compelling read from start to finish, even if the specific topic isn't necessarily one that concerns you. Information is a welcome mix of old school medical advice and new school nutrition and stress relief. In Northup's world, whole foods and loving communication can play just as important roles as antibiotics.
The book is categorized somewhat loosely by age, beginning with pregnancy and labor, and continuing through infancy, childhood, adolescence and young adulthood. Each section is quite specifically tuned to relating to daughters: Mothers of sons will get some use out of sections on breastfeeding, vaccinations and the like, but emotional concerns and physical recommendations are tailor-made for women and girls, right down to the resource guide that ends the book. By itself, that resource guide is an excellent starting point for further reading, both online and in print. When added to the whole, it is just one more reason you'll reach for the book on a regular basis. Jill Lightner

Book Description
With such groundbreaking bestsellers as
Women’s Bodies, Women’s Wisdom and
The Wisdom of Menopause, Dr. Christiane Northrup is one of today’s most trusted and visionary medical experts. Now she presents her most profound and revolutionary approach to women’s health. . . .
The mother-daughter relationship sets the stage for our state of health and well-being for our entire lives. Because our mothers are our first and most powerful female role models, our most deeply ingrained beliefs about ourselves as women come from them. And our behavior in relationships—with food, with our children, with our mates, and with ourselves—is a reflection of those beliefs. Once we understand our mother-daughter bonds, we can rebuild our own health, whatever our age, and create a lasting positive legacy for the next generation.
Mother-Daughter Wisdom introduces an entirely new map of female development, exploring the “five facets of feminine power,” which range from the basics of physical self-care to the discovery of passion and purpose in life. This blueprint allows any woman—whether or not she has children—–to repair the gaps in her own upbringing and create a better adult relationship with her mother. If she has her own daughter, it will help her be the mother she has always wanted to be.
Drawing on patient case histories and personal experiences, Dr. Northrup also presents findings at the cutting edge of medicine and psychology. Discover:
•How to lay the nutritional foundation to prevent eating disorders and adult diseases
•The truth about the immunization controversy–and the true meaning of immunity
•How we can change our genetic health legacy
•Why financial literacy is essential to women’s health
•How to foster healthy sexuality and future “love maps” in our daughters
•How to balance independence with caring, and individual growth with family ties
Written with warmth, enthusiasm, and rare intelligence,
Mother-Daughter Wisdom is an indispensable book destined to change lives and become essential reading for all women.

Dissappointing.......2007-05-08
I have so enjoyed Christians & Mona Lisa's tapes on Intuitive Healing, I thought that this would be just as good. After listening to 2 of the CD's I switched them off, they were so full of negative stuff, that someone having a baby for the first time, would be so fearful of the process. I know when having my own first child, I stopped reading the information, simply becasue we are "wired" to think the worst, instead of what we need to think "It's OK"
AMAZING BOOK.......2007-05-03
This book is amazing. If you have a daughter or not this is a must read!
Some good advice, but a lot of misleading information..........2007-03-11
Christiane Northrup is not a psychologist, as another reviewer commented, but she sure tries to act like one. And she uses her own life experience as her only basis for many of her claims. If this book were just a memoir, I think I would have less of a problem with it. Much of the health advice in this book is either questionable in safety and value (such as consuming large amounts of soy, which is increasingly being shown to be dangerous, or not vaccinating your children at all) or is obvious to anyone with common sense (don't make an issue about how much your daughter eats, eat regular meals with the family, blah, blah). And all of the talk about menstrual cycles and celebrating your femininity and kundalini rising really rubbed me the wrong way. I am all for questioning traditional medicine and healing yourself in natural ways, but I need real science to back things up, not anecdotes from "intuitive healers" (aka psychics.) However, here and there sprinkled throughout the book there are interesting bits of information and interesting perspectives on the mother-daughter relationship. You just have to be a very critical reader while going through this book, and I definitely don't accept Dr. Northrup's authority unquestioningly.
Easy to understand.......2007-01-19
I have other books by Christiane Northrup and I wasn't disappointed with this one. There are so many issues and points that are relevant, I seem to jump around and read what I want - but its easy to read and digest. Thank you!
Freeing, insightful, helpful.......2007-01-17
This book is one of the most helpful books I have ever read. It offered so much insight and I identified with it so much! If you want to be enlightened about your womanhood, your relationships, your childhood, your health, this is a must read! Definitely recommend it.

A Headache in the Pelvis.......2007-08-27
An excellent resource for anyone who suffers with pain due to Pelvic Floor Disfunction. I found this book to be very informative. It is written in layman's terms so you don't have to be a medical professional to understand it. PFD is a syndrome that effects millions of people worldwide, many of whom are at their wits end as to what to do to find relief. This book will help them understand what they have and what they can do to help themselves. I would highly recommend it to anyone with PFD as well as their spouses, partners or caregivers.
A Life-Changing Read for Those with Pelvic Pain.......2007-05-29
To all those suffering with CPPS/Prostatitis: You must give yourself the gift of reading this book. It is the scripture of the new paradigm for treating chronic pelvic pain. Most importantly, it was written by someone who had actually suffered for years with pelvic pain and, by using the techniques introduced in the book, freed himself from chronic pain. For an author to be able to say to a reader, "I have been where you are", creates overwhelming trust and compassion that is felt throughout this book.
I write this review with the utmost confidence because I, too, suffered with pelvic pain for several years, and was misdiagnosed with "prostatitis" over and over again, as many men have been for years. When I read this book, I just knew it was the truth, because it spoke so fully to every aspect of my condition, both physically, mentally, and emotionally. I committed myself to doing the protocol described in the book, and attended one of the monthly clinics that the authors run. In short, all of my pelvic pain symptoms have completed abated after following the protocol, and in many ways I feel that my overall health is even better than before my pain started, as so much of the protocol taught in the book possesses benefits far beyond healing pelvic pain.
The truth taught in a Headache in the Pelvis has now become scientifically validated -- two recent studies using the AHIP protocol have been published in the JOURNAL UROLOGY and show symptom improvement results in patients like no other studies in the field. AHIP has also recently been featured in an article in Best Life magazine, written by an experienced journalist who found amazing relief from his pelvic pain by using the techniques found in AHIP.
In years to come I know the field of urology will look back on this book as the most groundbreaking treatise on how to help patients find relief from all of the pelvic pain conditions. If I could buy this book for every pelvic pain sufferer out there I would because I know intimately how it can change one's life.
Groundbreaking, revolutionary, visionary!.......2007-05-25
This expanded edition is superb! Although mainly aimed at a male audience suffering chronic prostatitis and chronic pelvic pain syndrome, this edition includes information relevant to females as well. In summary, this 4th edition adds 63 pages to the 3rd edition. It expands the illustrated discussion of trigger point release. It discusses developments in the home treatment and self-trigger point release program. There are more stories of patients who have undergone the Stanford Protocol. There is a discussion of neurogenic inflammation of the bladder, anxiety, inflammation and interstitial cystitis. There is discussion of other conditions of mucosal inflammation paralleling inflammation of the bladder, the healing of the bladder, the usefulness of cystoscopy. The book contains more illustrations of the location of trigger points and offers a comprehensive illustrated discussion of female pelvic floor physical therapy including locations of female pelvic pain related trigger points, discusses pregnancy and pelvic pain. Lastly, this edition investigates the relationship between emotions and pelvic pain, and other related topics.
Sadly, Amazon has "lost" all the glowing comments and 5-star reviews given to the last edition due to a glitch in Amazon's system. I've copied some of the comments on the last edition of this book for your information. Highly recommended!

Their description of this very private pain was DEAD ON. Their analogy of the pain and the cause is DEAD ON. These authors understand my symptoms and one of the authors has suffered them at least as long as I have. If you have Prostititis you would probably travel miles just to hear or read about someone who can simply describe what you are GOING THROUGH!! My doctor didn`t know what it was or what treatment were effective either and I was just given meds to take daily just because. And he was the GOOD GOOD Doctor! One Urologist charged me $500 to tell me that he could not afford to treat me. So far this has been the only ray of hope for me and the pain is leaving. Hey guys it even explains why you have been curled up in fetal position in your bed crying totally uninteresting in going outside, smiling, talking, moving and cursing sex in agony or masturbating furiously for a moment of release or cursing the idea of life because a demon as been eating at your privates 24/7 365 secretly for a decade. Why does stress and depression seem to make your symptoms worse? Why have you been withdrawing? It is all here and WOMEN ARE WELCOME HERE. You are discussed also. This is no way to live. A Headache in the Pelvis which describes the new treatment for pelvic pain developed at Stanford University is the best book anybody could read who is suffering from pelvic pain. I have read all the editions and just finished the 4th edition which includes treatment for women as well as men. Wise and Anderson are the pioneers in this treatment. I can't praise this book enough!!!
Women need this advice too, November 16, 2006
By E. Edgerton (Syracuse, NY) - (REAL NAME)
Just a quick comment: It is too bad that this book focuses primarily on males. Female pelvic floor problems are also described and occasionally dealt with, but it would be nice if future editions of this book contained diagrams or chapters geared toward women. Women suffering with these problems really need to know about these techniques too.

A Worth Read and an Uplifter, July 13, 2006
By buddah_sack "buddah_sack" (california)
Friends, I suffered from Prostadynia over 10 years ago ( 24 age) and it lasted for two years. The pain was mostly in my right teste and it was very bothersome. I went to a few urologists and they ran the gamet of many different tests on me. In the end, I was told that i had no infection and that it was non-bacterial prostititus. One even told me I had a cyst on the right testicle. Alot of medical talk with no answers. Eventually I started to heal my self using exercise, biking, and just relaxation. I made the effort to heal my self through my own ways and experimentation Mind you my pain use to be so bad that I would be in tears sometimes. But i made myself get through it. This last year, I went through a bunch of bad stuff in my life and the pain came back slightly but enough to bother me. I was so upset and knew i had to relax. However, this time around, my life problems were so different and I felt that I did not have the right tools to deal with my pain. Enter this book. About a week ago, I picked up this book. All i have to say is WOW! MAny times while reading it, I shake my head and go "yup" i know that feeling. It's been about a week now, I have noticed about a 50% cut in my groin pain. The exercises help ALOT and so do the relaxation methods. Breathing, accepting the tension, allowing your body to communicate with you...these are very crucial in getting better. Look, if your going to drop money on Doctors to keep examining you or are contemplating suregery. Give this book a chance.
I found this book to be very useful and great. There is hope. Trust me. This book helped me again and if anything is a good read.
A ray of hope, June 8, 2006

Finally, a book that gives a ray of hope to pelvic pain sufferers.
Thank you Dr. Wise
This book is the first step on the journey to healing pelvic pain, June 3, 2006
By John Bartok "JohnB" (CA)
Drs. Wise and Anderson's "A Headache in The Pelvis" is a remarkable book outlining a pioneering new treatment for a number of widespread forms of pelvic pain. These conditions, which the authors refer to as a "headache in the pelvis", have often been routinely misdiagnosed and ineffectively treated, and have affected millions of men and women from all corners of this good globe. This is a book that describes a method to treat this condition for which the authors have published far better results than conventional treatments. The protocol of "A Headache in the Pelvis" was developed by these Stanford researchers, one of whom suffered from pelvic pain for many years and this method came out of his search to finally help himself. It is very unusual for those in the healing profession to offer a treatment that comes from the ancient injunction for the physician to heal thyself. And this is what makes the book so compelling. The book describes this method in an easy to understand and well outlined format suitable for the least sophisticated reader. It is organized with easily referenced sections that take the reader, step by step, through the origins of the condition, the history of other treatments and finally to details of the treatment. If the journey of healing pelvic pain is a thousand miles long, and begins with a single step, then buying this book is clearly the first.
This is a great book, May 31, 2006
By voltaire
This is a remarkable book. The guys who wrote this book are pioneers in offering any real help for the problem of pelvic pain. Their results speak for themselves. I think most people who suffer from chronic pelvic pain will find this book to be the first thing that makes any sense. Bravo for this book.
Mind/body medicine at its best, May 30, 2006
By C. B. Simmons (Emeryville, CA United States)(REAL NAME)
This is an inspiring book. As a psychiatrist and physician educator interested in the body/mind connection, I have been looking for clinical applications of meditation and awareness training in the field of medicine. Despite very sophisticated studies proving the benefits of meditation and relaxation exercises, very few clinicians seem to be writing about their direct work with patients. This book is an inspiring example of how these new principles can be used for treating chronic pelvic pain syndromes. The success rate reported in the medical literature of these Stanford researchers is very exciting. I was very appreciative of the author's personal disclosure. As healers and clinicians heal themselves, they bring a special sensitivity to their work. These authors' sensitivity and respect for the deep suffering in their clients' lives pervades the book, and makes it unique among mind-body medicine books. I enthusiastically recommend this book for caring clinicians as well as people in pain looking for relief from their suffering.
Unhelpful Freudian approach.......2007-05-24
This book is full of UN-helpful ideas, like pain is caused by being uptight, by sexual shame, or by unfufillment. It is very old-fashioned and unscientific, like it was written by a "quack." Who cares what came first - pain or depression? YOU know you have a physical pain that needs to be addressed. If you want to try trigger point therapy, look for a better book than this one (Clair Davies is good). If you want to try relaxation techniques, look for a better book or take a class. If you want to try medication, I found major relief with the prescription Effexor. This book is not at all helpful.

AMAZING.......2007-09-08
This Book was just what I needed!! I was diagnosed a year ago, and the only thing I had ever heard from my Doctor was that I may never have children. I was never given any literature or advice on how to handle or manage the symptoms. This book was such an easy read and would STRONGLY recommend it to anyone with PCOS.
A Patient's Guide to PCOS: Understanding--and Reversing--Polycystic Ovary Syndrome.......2007-08-13
I would recommend this book to anyone who has PCOS or thinks they may have it. It does a wonderfuld job explaining PCOS and it's symptoms and other medical complications that can be associated with it. It really has helped me understand more things about this disorder, as well as how to fix problems that it can cause. Great book, it has been very very helpful to me.
Very thorough.......2007-07-17
This book was so helpful! The author is very knowledgeable and walks you through PCOS from diagnosis to a specific plan that will help with the symptoms, including a description of the medications available. I got more information from this book than I did my doctor!
Very informative and hopeful.......2007-03-28
As someone who was just diagnosed with PCOS and knew very little about it, I was hesitant to buy this book because I wasn't sure how reliable it would be. But I was very pleasantly surprised. I felt confident that the author was very knowledgeable about the syndrome. The information is not flooded with incomprehensible medical-speak, but also provides you with the medical facts you need to know. The food lists and recipes for managing with diet were very helpful. I feel there were very clear suggestions about how to talk with your doctor, medication management, diet and overall empowering oneself to become involved in your own medical care. I appreciated the chapter on the emotional impact of PCOS as well, as it certainly cannot be overlooked.

There is an alternative........2007-08-20
WSJ Guide to Money is out of print. That is why the cost has gone through the roof. Standard and Poor's Guide to Money and Investing (Standard & Poor) The Standard and Poors Guide to Money is by the same authors and is even a year more current. Take a look at the cover you can even see that it is the same book and that all that was done is WSJ in the title is changed to "Standard and Poors Guide to Money and Investing". Same book by the same author. The only difference is that is is in print so the price is reasonable.
Handy Little Book.......2007-05-03
Although this isn't the largest book in the world, I really enjoyed reading it. I thought that I was pretty savvy as far as the way things worked, but this book definitely enlightened me. I also appreciated the pictures that made things clearer.
A little bit tough to read, but worth it........2007-04-28
If you're a beginner, interested in investing, this is a very decent primer to start with. Buy it with Eric Tyson's Investing for Dummies, and you'll be fully set!
Not impressed.......2007-02-12
A nice introduction to wall street if you were raised on Mars. For people who want to do investing for a living this is a waste of time
To get the whole picture.......2006-12-22
I think this book did a great job in helping me understand the universe of money and investing beyong the scope of stock. I have been trading for 1 year and wanted to buy a small book that gave me a general education on the subject. Although much more can be written on each topic covered it is good for beginning to understand the whole picture.

Book Description
They happen to skiers. They happen to cyclists. They happen to basketball players and joggers and football players. They even happen to people out for a simple walk. They are knee injuries, and in 2003, Americans will suffer more than 8 million tears, fractures, and sprains. Many of those patients will eventually develop chronic problems, joining the 30 million Americans whose knees hurt for the duration of their life. Written by leading sports medicine doctor Brian Halpern, The Knee Crisis Handbook will prove especially essential to athletes, who will appreciate sections on individual sports and the knee risks associated with each. But anyone can benefit from The Knee Crisis Handbook's, chapters on preventing injury, maximizing workout results while protecting the knees, and treating a recent break or tear, even without surgery. Co-authored by leading arthroscopic surgeon Dr. David Altchek, and strength-training expert Marty Jaramillo, The Knee Crisis Handbook is the last word on knee injury.

Covers it ALL!!!.......2007-07-31
This has everything - surgery, sports, special knee exercises, how to determine your risk, tests the docs will do, and more. How to reduce your risk, risky sports & what to do if you still want to play. Also tells you when you shouldn't play. Special attention to women's higher risk of knee injury, why it occurs, and what to do... I am using the exercises to strengthen my knees. Exercises well organized & very detailed. General knee health routine, stretching routine, ACL injury routine, balance exercises, weight bearing exercises (& don't need any fancy equipment either - just a small ball or yoga block!) Have already recommended it to 2 other knee injured people.
Hope for hopeless knees.......2007-07-24
This book is amazing! I've been suffering with knee problems for 30+ years and have seen many specialists, but never have I understood the knee, its mechanics and its problems the way I do now. I have purchased a copy of this book for everyone I know who suffers with bad knees- from sports, injuries, arthritis, etc. Written in enjoyable prose, Halpern explains the way the knee is constructed along with its inherent problems given that we force it to operate in ways it was never designed to move and that we don't pay enough attention to medial healing. The strength and flexibility-building exercises are superb, and include everything I've ever done in (expensive) physical therapy and more. Everyone! should have this book!
Great Especially If You're Considering Surgery.......2007-03-10
I'm planning on ACL surgery in two weeks and I picked up several books yesterday. This is the most useful of the three. The Chapter on Preparing for Surgery is very good. It provides questions you might want to discuss with the doctor, what to expect and things to do ahead of time to prepare (lay in a stock of your favorite food, duct tape and hefty bags to waterproof . I would never have thought about half of these things, and they make a lot of sense! And there's a section on how to use crutches, which those of us who have been healthy until now have never had to think about. For me, these were worth the price of the book.
Good informaion.......2007-02-12
I have knee injuries and arthritis as a result. I am always looking for ways to understand my limitations and work with what I've got. This book is very helpful.
You "Kneed" This Book.......2006-03-27
Corny review title, I know. But if I only knew ten years ago (five years, one year) what I know now...what I know now because of this book.
Dr. Brian Halpern of the "Hospital for Special Surgery" in New York has written a thorough and highly readable primer on caring for the knee. There is a knee crisis in the United States...and I am sadly one of the recent casualties.
With sections entitled "The Knee," "Preventing Knee Injury," "Getting Better" and "Groups with Special Concerns," you have all the information you need to prevent, diagnose, know whether it's time to go to the emergency room, prepare for surgery, find a physical therapist and participate wholeheartedly. There is also a chapter about "Complementary Medicine," discussing acupuncture, vitamins, herbal supplements and massage.
I read it in a night, but will refer to it for years to come...whether I have surgery or not. I highly recommend it.
