Book Description

CEOs regularly announce ambitious growth targets, then fail to achieve them. The reason? Their growing addiction to bad profits. These corporate steroids boost short-term earnings but alienate customers. They undermine growth by creating legions of detractors—customers who complain loudly about the company and switch to competitors at the earliest opportunity.

Based on extensive research, The Ultimate Question shows how companies can rigorously measure Net Promoter statistics, help managers improve them, and create communities of passionate advocates that stimulate innovation. Vivid stories from leading-edge organizations illustrate the ideas in practice.

Practical and compelling, this is the one book—and the one tool—no growth-minded leader can afford to miss.

3 out of 5 stars Too Good to Be True.......2007-09-13

I gotta admit I was taken in by the book, but the problem comes in when you attempt to link the NPS score to any performance measure. The academics have all but refuted Reicheld's claims. Unfortunately, statistics matter and the best way to measure something with a survey is to use a multiple item, multiple measured scale. However, NPS does have some redeeming qualities, in focusing mangement behind one number. Many academics are recommending that if you must use NPS to use it along with other traditional statistical measures.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Book for Customer Service & Marketing.......2007-08-28

Fred does a very good job at explaining that your best & foremost marketing tool are your employees. His Net Promoter Score (NPS) system he has developed is an innovation for the corporate world and I believe is the way forward.

The book is well documented and gives you step by step infoon how to implement the NPS system within your company.

IF you want to truly find out what your customers are thinking about your business this book is a must read. It teaches you how to equate customer satisfaction into tangable profit dollars. It helps effectively use the customer feedback to get your employees delivering service beyond expectation!

4 out of 5 stars It's about time to state the obvious !.......2007-07-19

We can finally begin to realize that the very customers that use our services are the same ones that resent being "surveyed" into oblivion !
Only the very best companies can sustain somewhat correct feedback to begin with. I only wondered how long it would take for business leaders to stop abusing your best customers with long questionaires that may not even be relavant to the shopping experience. This may not be the ultimate destination for determining consumer needs but it is a great start in the right direction and an opportunity to save all the wasted money on self centered and manipulated customer focus groups.

3 out of 5 stars There's A Better Alternative.......2007-07-19

I wish that I could have given this book a higher rating. I loved Mr. Reichheld's impassioned admonition against "bad profits," which he defines as profits made at the expense of customers. I also agree with him that good surveys are short surveys. You might want to buy this book for these two reasons alone. The bold proclamation that he has discovered The Ultimate Question, however, is like proclaiming that the check-engine light is the ultimate dashboard gauge.

Psychometrically, the Net Promoter Score (NPS) is a difference score that is based upon a single-item rating scale, and such scores can be very problematic. Albert M. Wilburn has already pointed out that different distributions of ratings can yield the same NPS, and that these distributions "probably differ in their implications on repurchase behavior." Notwithstanding, in Appendix A, Reichheld provides some evidence the NPS approach can work, and he is honest enough to disclose that it doesn't always work. Between the admonition against "bad profits" and Appendix A, there are a lot of stories.

There is an alternative to the NPS that has a more established track record. In 1994, Bradley T. Gale published Managing Customer Value, which disclosed AT&T's finding that the ratio of the perceived value of a company's products or services to that of its competitors is predictive of changes in market share. Since then, this finding has been reproduced in a variety of contexts worldwide. The methodology that surrounds the perceived-value ratio, Customer Value Analysis, estimates the impacts of the various price and non-price attributes that drive customers' value perceptions. This methodology is best described in Customer Value Management: A Guide for Your Journey to Best-Practice Processes by Khalid Hafiz and Scott Hendricks (Houston: APQC, 2001). Buy this little book either instead of, or along with, The Ultimate Question.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars THE best book on trading I have ever read........2007-09-09

I had to get this book after reading such a mix of reviews. I was really curious how it would turn out since reviewers were either raving about it or trashing it.

After reading the 1st half of this book I was shocked to say the least. The first half of this book is worth more than all of the books I have read on trading combined. If someone trashes this book then they are either very new to trading and don't understand the points being made in this book(which I can understand because you have to get some experience under your belt to really appreciate what is being said in this book) or they are looking for a quick strategy they can read in 5 minutes and start making money. For one thing, that's never going to happen anyway.

The trading strategies in this book are very basic, so for newbies that part of the book has some good info. I was hoping for a little more advanced analysis of trading techniques, but I really didn't need that anyway. The knowledge and wisdom in the first half of this book is going to take my trading to moon.

For the newbies who didn't like this book, get a couple years experience under your belts then go back to this book and re-read the 1st half. I guarantee you, you will want to come back here and write a positive review.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting book with lack in details by very self-confident authors.......2007-06-09

When I started reading the book by Oliver Velez and Greg Capra: "Tools and Tactics for the Master Day Trader", I thought it was one of the better books on day trading. It starts out with the importance of discipline, and the lessons to be learnt from losses. It also outlines the concept that you don't buy from the market, but there is always another person on the other side of the trade that has exactly the opposite market expectation as you.

Then come four chapters with lists of rules: 7 deadly sins, 12 trading laws of success, 15 things every trader should know, and 10 lessons for the master trader. Altogether 44 rules, which don't seem to be in any systematic order. It looks like the authors were brainstorming to come up with as many rules as they could think of, and then divided them up among the four chapters. Some rules contradict one another, some important rules are next to irrelevant ones etc. Also the "Seed of Wisdom" does not help to sum up the rules because it often is not related to the part that it is supposed to summarize.

In Chapter 10 and 11 the authors talk about tools and start out by explaining things as basic as a candle stick or support and resistance. Then they dedicate two chapters to Order Systems and Level II data, and it takes until page 293 when they finally talk about trading techniques.

After having talked redundantly about general things for three quarters of the book, the authors give their ideas of entry, stop and exit techniques. What I missed most in this part is the lack of exact trading rules. Everything is expressed vaguely (e.g. p.219 "you can also opt to keep the break-even stop. This is a matter of choice." or p.322 "Sell at least half your stock if and when the stock breaks below the 5-minute low. ... These are just guidelines. We don't want to be stupid. ... Many traders will be best served selling the whole lot at this point."). This is exactly the vagueness you can't afford as a day trader. I was also disappointed that there was so little variety in the trade setups (just three entry techniques).

So my hope was high that in chapter 17 "How to put it all together" there would finally be concrete entry and exit descriptions. Instead, the authors just describe common chart formations like any other book on technical analysis (and do a worse job, too).

Throughout the book I noted an arrogant tone (p. 317: "Let's assume a master trader, let's call him Mr. Velez."). The authors speak about master traders, as if they were some kind of rock stars. No matter, how successful you are, if you quit being humble, the market can easily take everything away from you.

I am giving the book three stars because it does cover important topics for day traders like discipline, and learning from your mistakes. If you want to read a more effective book, however, I recommend the one by John F. Carter "Mastering the Trade".

4 out of 5 stars Seeds of Wisdom !.......2007-05-18

Tools and Tactics for the Master DayTrader: Battle-Tested Techniques for Day, Swing, and Position Traders.

Velez and Capra give me the impression they have traded before and are not just book writer's. You can learn a few pointer's from this book whether you are just learning or have been trading a while. It covers Candlesticks,Moving Averages, Fibs, Volume and drawing a few trendlines on the charts intraday and daily charts.
It does not go into some of the mathematical lagging stock indicators that some trader's think it might be the "Holy Grail". Those lagging indicators act like delayed instrument gages on your dashboard. Sorry, there is no Holy Grail on WallStreet predicting the future for you... better look elsewhere like yourself. The only "Holy Grail" you will ever find trading stocks is yourself there is no quick fixes to learn to trade stocks it all takes lots of time and practice.
Its to look and observe what a chart's history or footprints tell you with some seeds of wisdom.
I see so many negative reviews here about this books. I am starting to wonder whether those reader's have ever traded stocks or are just rookie trader's learning from their mistakes the first 2 years.
I have traded full-time for years and I can tell you they must be all rookie trader's hoping that a book might have all the answer's for them and their future. It would help them if they read this book a few times until it really sinks in their minds.
This book is a concise,no nonsense approach and covers everything traders need to win consistently.
As a prior reviewer mentioned which I agree...
"The key buy setup, alone is worth many times the price of the book."

5 out of 5 stars FIVE STARS!!!.......2007-02-27

I would definitely give this book five stars. I really learned alot from it. If you gave it a bad review you either need to go back and read the book again or just skimmed through the book.

and to the person who sid that he "Heard" that they don't actually trade they are wrong and I thought everyone knew not always to believe what they hear. But hey, some people just believe things more easily than others.
and you can't even RATE this book one star because YOU HAVEN'T ACTUALLY READ IT!!!
You skimmed through the book and rate it one star??? WOW. that's all I have to say: wow. I'm not even going to say anything else. and people don't listen to all of those bad revievs out there. It really was a great book and is worth the money. (and so is his newer book)

and to the person who said: "This book TOTALLY rocked. I read it alot because it was so awesome"

YOU TOTTALY ROCK TOO! LOL!

Amazon.com's Best of 2001

Menopause doesn't have to be a dreaded curse of aging during which we can look forward only to hot flashes and whacked-out hormonal mood swings. According to Christiane Northrup, M.D. (Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom), menopause often marks the beginning of a woman's most sexually passionate, creatively inspired, and professionally productive phase of life.

While this may sound like wishful thinking, Northrup backs up her good news with solid medical expertise. As an obstetrician and gynecologist, Northrup has specialized in using a mind-body approach to women's health for decades, which means she doesn't just write about hormones, but also examines how a woman's lifestyle, emotions, and beliefs are affected by menopause. With the right diet, attitude, and perhaps some supplements along the way, women can actually look forward to a resurgence of energy and a revolutionary opportunity for personal growth--one that rivals the hormonally driven period of adolescence in its scope and urgency, she claims. And yes, at just under 500 pages, The Wisdom of Menopause does explain how to have a positive and healthy menopause in concise detail. Northrup has indeed "written the book" on menopause.

It helps that Northrup has been through menopause herself (she vowed she wouldn't write a book on it until she was on the other side). Readers have the sense that they are gleaning advice from a knowledgeable holistic doctor as well as a sage aunt whose life was radically altered by the "change of life" (Northrup divorced at the onset of menopause). After she shares her personal story of "the change," Northrup delves into a significant discussion on how self-sacrifice catches up with women in midlife. Suddenly, hormones are directing women out of the caregiver role and into an inwardly focused assessment of life and its meaning, she explains. Resentments (not hormones) are what spur the notorious surges of anger, as women reexamine the agreements surrounding their relationships with colleagues, friends, and family members.

From here, Northrup guides readers into a thorough section on menopausal hormone changes--a discussion that is scientifically informative, yet entirely accessible. While acknowledging the need for hormone-replacement therapy and the tremendous relief it can provide (helping to alleviate insomnia, hot flashes, and depression), Northrup encourages women to avoid synthetic hormones and instead consider "bioidentical" hormones (such as estradiol, estrone, and estriol). She also devotes an entire chapter to foods and supplements that support hormonal balance. By the way, she says to skip the wild Mexican yam creams: "they certainly don't provide the documented benefits of progesterone." Be warned: some readers may find the advice in Wisdom of Menopause too alternative for their liking. For example, in her discussion on insomnia, one of Northrup's recommendations is to cover the mirror at night, following the ancient Asian design principles of feng shui. (Skeptics will find Northrup's medical assertions carefully cited and footnoted in the rear of her book.)

Northrup gives a solid and practical diet plan that supports hormonal balance while countering the weight gain that so frequently plagues menopausal women ("focus on portion size, not calories," "eat protein at every meal," and cut down on refined and high-carbohydrate foods). Readers can also expect a thorough mind-body discussion in subsequent chapters that cover breast health, bone loss, and cultivating midlife beauty, along with chapters titled "Sex and Menopause: Myths and Reality" and "Creating Pelvic Health and Power."

She concludes with a list of mail-order and online resources, such as retailers for bioidentical hormones, progesterone cream, Chinese herbs, soy products, weight-loss audiocassettes, lubricants, and Kegel weights. Northrup takes a truly comprehensive approach to all the effective treatments of menopausal symptoms so that women can make their own highly informed and wise choices. --Gail Hudson

Book Description

Through her bestselling books, groundbreaking PBS specials, and up-to-the-minute clinical knowledge, Dr. Christiane Northrup has earned a place as one of America’s most trusted medical advisors.

In The Wisdom of Menopause, she once again challenges convention with this inspiring look at one of the most commonly misunderstood female health issues. The “change” is not simply a collection of physical symptoms to be “fixed,” Dr. Northrup claims, but a mind/body revolution that brings the greatest opportunity for growth since adolescence. The choices a woman makes now–from the quality of her relationships to the quality of her diet–have the power to secure her health and well-being for the rest of her life. Through her personal story and many fascinating case histories, Dr. Northrup shows:

• How menopause jump-starts changes in the brain, issuing a dramatic wake-up call to body, mind, and emotions
• How to ensure the long-term health of breasts, bones, and heart
• How the body adjusts naturally to changing hormones
• Why bestselling drugs like Premarin may not be the best choice
• How to deal with metabolism shifts, weight gain, sexual problems, and appearance issues
• How to negotiate the challenges of “the empty nest” and midlife marriage

And much more.

In a book destined to be a classic, Dr. Northrup shows women how they can make menopause a time of personal empowerment and positive energy–emerging wiser, healthier, and stronger in both mind and body than ever before.

5 out of 5 stars Christiane does it again.......2007-10-23

I have read Christiane's work for years, and attacking the emotional side of menopause is timely and well done. So many woen suffer with this imbalance and the answer doesn't have to be massive HRT and other drugs. Christianne knows about energy and emotions, and her approach speaks to one of the most important aspects of countering the craziness that happens during this transitional time. As an "elder" who has been there and searched for the wisdom long ago, I believe this is a good read and a bookshelf keeper.- E. Claverie, editor, "Forget the Cures, Find the Cause, Books I and II"

1 out of 5 stars One Woman's Take.......2007-10-22

I found it difficult to relate to this book. The author's anger in her past relationships was off-putting for me, and much of what she said just didn't seem to have any relevence to my life. I'm sure there are parts of the book that will be of value to some women, but this book was just not for me. I didn't get empowerment so much as that the book was just all about her.

4 out of 5 stars A good resource that provides options.......2007-10-18

The women who blindly "obeyed" their doctors and took their estrogen for years, later came to regret that decision. Or, many did. So we discovered that the AMA and traditional medicine does not hold all the answers.

If you are one of the women who prefer only answers the doctor will give you, you won't enjoy this book nor want it. But if you're open to other ideas such as compounding pharmacies that compound various remedies, you'll want to at least hear the author out.

Having used both traditional meno medications and the alternatives, I can tell you that both have risks and side effects. Or, they can. And the alternative treatments are every bit as potent (in many cases.)

Menopause and peri-menopause are very hard years for a woman. She needs all the help she can get in the struggle with this time of her life. This book is just one resource. But it's a good resource if you have an open mind and are at least willing to consider alternative treatments.

4 out of 5 stars The Best of The Lot.......2007-10-17

I've read three books on the subject and this is far and away the best. Which is not to say the book is perfect. It's not. It's flawed. But compared to the others, which left me cold, this one at least treated the subject matter with a dose of empathy and a smidgen of tact.

This book is not for those followers of traditional medicine who abstain from all thnigs alternative. The book touches on alternative therapies - acupuncture, diet, stress relief, meditation, etc. I found the holistic approach to be most rewarding. BUT IT'S NOT FOR EVERYBODY! You must be open to this stuff. If you're the type of person who only does what your doctor tells you, and doesn't believe in wellness therapy or taking a preventative approach to your health, this isn't the book for you.

I found this book most satisfying. On similar subjects, I also enjoy Suzeanne Somers' books on aging. And, I recently completed the funniest book on aging ever written. Called "Race You To tHe Fountain of Youth" this little nugget made me laugh - repeatedly. Race You to the Fountain of Youth: I'm Not Dead Yet (But parts of me are going fast)

"The Wisdom of Menopause" is great for those who are exhausted from attempting traditional coping methods and want something new and fresh. It generally worked for me.

5 out of 5 stars 2 Extraordinary Books for Mid-Lifers.......2007-10-17

I have been educating myself about menopause since I hit 40. This book covers everything I discovered plus gives a spiritual side that medical literature never covers. It is full of excellent practical advice. Dr. Northrup combines traditional medicine with other "medicines" in a nice balance. "THE WISDOM OF MENOPAUSE" and " Understanding: Train of Thought" are life changing books. I can't recommend them too highly!

Book Description

You're coming into the peak of your life. And because you’re already more attuned to your physical and emotional needs, and more inclined to commit to a healthier lifestyle, you're poised to live brilliantly for the thirty-plus years after menopause. All you need now is the program outlined in Younger Next Year for Women—which, for starters, will help you avoid literally 70 percent of the decay and eliminate 50 percent of the injuries and illnesses associated with getting older.

How? Drawn from disciplines as varied as evolutionary biology, cell physiology, experimental psychology and anthropology, the science behind Younger Next Year is clear. Our bodies are programmed to do one of two things: either grow or decay. Sitting in front of a screen all day tells the body to decay. Taking a walk or doing yoga tells the body to grow. Loneliness and stress trigger decay; love and laughter trigger growth.

Just as clear as the science is the goal: Become the active gatekeeper of your own body and gain the power to control those signals of growth and decay. Seven simple rules show the way, from #1 Exercise six days a week for the rest of your life, to #6 Care, to #7 Connect and commit.

So, congratulations. You’re now about to get younger.

5 out of 5 stars Young at heart.......2007-10-06

This is a good addition to the authors' previous book. It isn't the usual blah, blah, blah, but scientific information which amount to common sense. I am grateful to the authors for keeping me and my wife young at heart. I was happy to buy for my wife this book as "her own" copy, after we both extensively studied the original "Younger Next Year". Another great book that I highly recommend is "Can We Live 150 Year". In fact these two titles should be sold in one package as they complement each other

5 out of 5 stars Younger Next Year for Women.......2007-09-28

Excellent arguments for doing all the right things you know you should do. Different approach in understanding how we age. Very comprehensive coverage of things we need to know. Down to earth, doable steps we can take to add healthier years to our lives. (Mrs. J. T.)

4 out of 5 stars Encouraging book!!.......2007-09-28

This book gives advice and encouragement to women who have falsely come to believe that deterioration comes with age and there is nothing we can do about it. I truly enjoyed it and recommend it, but still want to make the following comments: it belabored the value of exercise to the point where I felt like shouting "OK, I get it, I get...we need to exercise!". In a way, I kept waiting for the book to also talk about OTHER things too, but really this was the total focus of the book. I also thought that it would have been nice if the authors included some women doctors' perspectives too (it was weird getting all that advice on how we women should live our lives from two men). And lastly, I felt that the recommendation (strongly and repeatedly given) to exercise for HOURS a day, every day preferably, was fine for the retired author of the book who, as another reviewer also mentioned, was spending ALOT of time doing things that are not easily affordable by the average woman, nevermind the huge amount of vacation/play time he had to enjoy that high-end exercise, like biking trips and skiing trips...not realistic for the kinds of lives most women, age 50-60 at least, really live in today's world (lives filled with the time demands of jobs combined with children, homes, elderly parents, grandchildren, etc.). It may be that this much exercise is what is really needed to turn back the clock, but I'm hoping that's not true- since so few of us have THAT much time to devote to exercise (the authors seemed to think that if you had your priorities straight, you'd find the time). In summary, however, the authors did convince me that I need to add strength training to my cardio training, so all-in-all, I felt it was worth reading this book and I do recommend!

Book Description

In this revised and expanded second edition of Essentials of Strength Training and Conditioning, now with over 300 color photographs, leading exercise science professionals explore the scientific principles, concepts, and theories of strength training and conditioning as well as their practical applications to athletic performance.

Students, coaches, strength and conditioning specialists, personal trainers, athletic trainers, and other sport science professionals will find state-of-the-art, comprehensive information on structure and function of body systems, training adaptations, testing and evaluation, exercise techniques, program design (aerobic and anaerobic) and training facility organization and administration.

Edited by Thomas R. Baechle and Roger W. Earle, Essentials of Strength Training and Conditioning, Second Edition, is an excellent text for students preparing for careers in strength training and conditioning. It is the most comprehensive reference available for strength and conditioning professionals and sports medicine specialists. For people preparing to take the Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist examination, it is the primary preparation resource. Those preparing to take the NSCA Certified Personal Trainer examination will also find it to be a valuable resource. The NSCA Certification Commission, the certifying body of the National Strength and Conditioning Association, has developed this text.

Each of the book's 26 chapters provides an overview of an important aspect of strength and conditioning and includes chapter objectives, application boxes, key points, key terms, study questions, and questions requiring practical application of key concepts.

In Section 1 of Essentials of Strength Training and Conditioning, Second Edition, experts in exercise physiology, biochemistry, anatomy, biomechanics, endocrinology, sports nutrition, and sport psychology discuss the principles of their respective areas of expertise and how they apply in designing safe, effective strength and conditioning programs.

Section 2 discusses the selection, administration, scoring, and the interpretation of testing results. Section 3 provides information regarding the correction and execution of stretching, warm-up, and resistance training exercises.

Section 4 applies information from the first three sections to the design of effective strength training and conditioning programs, both aerobic and anaerobic. The three parts of Section 4 address anaerobic exercise prescription, aerobic endurance exercise prescription, and periodization and rehabilitation. The anaerobic prescription section provides guidelines for resistance and plyometric training as well as for speed, agility, and speed endurance programs. Step-by-step guidelines are given for designing strength and conditioning programs, and application boxes illustrate how each variable applies to athletes with different training goals. A unique feature of this edition is the use of scenarios to illustrate how the guidelines presented for each of the program design variables are applied to attain the different training scores.

Section 5 addresses facility design, scheduling, policies and procedures, maintenance, and risk management concerns.

5 out of 5 stars The CSCS Reference.......2007-04-09

This reference manual is geared toward sports science undergraduate students. It's the only book you'll need to study for the CSCS exam from the NSCA.

5 out of 5 stars Great for CSCS Exam.......2007-02-21

This is a great book to prepare you for the CSCS exam. Very comprehensive and endorsed by NSCA.

4 out of 5 stars It is just that... the Essentials and not a lot more..........2006-11-23

First, lets clarify the audience of this book. It is meant for undergraduation students in Exercise and Sport Science or Kinesiology programs focusing on strength training. And as a reference for professionals in the field. I have owned this book for four years and have used it a lot in my undergrad and Masters programs in Exercise Science. New edition should be out soon, which is good since some of the info. is dated. So here are some thoughts:

First, it is the only reference you will need for the CSCS test from the NSCA. Not every answer on the test is in this book, but a good 90% of them are. It is basically a book put out by the NSCA that puts everything into one place.

The organization is pretty good in my opinion. I think the book flows pretty well and is divided up fairly well. Especially the first section of the book (more scientific oriented, while the second half is more applied).

The writing can be dry, but I was OK with it. Moreso, I am unimpressed by how quickly some subjects are glanced over. Fourteen pages only on periodization? Are you kidding me?! It is also very "safe" when it gets out of the scientific arena and gets into the applied arena (the little that it does that).

The weakest chapter by far is the chapter on plyometrics. The drills are very simple and not described well, and this chapter alone could cost someone a passing grade on the CSCS test if they are using this book as their only study guide (just because the test focuses so much on plyos and this book's chapter on it stinks). There are also some stretches made in the book in regard to recommendations that are "common" but not yet scientifically studied. One of these recommendations is, again in the plyometrics chapter, the discussion about "ground contacts" and intensity of plyometrics. Just one example, the info. on facility design is pretty general and, really, bad, too.

Overall it is a good book for the basics and for its intended audience. It could even be OK for a perosn that just is really interested in fitness and human biology from an exercise standpoint who is not an Exercise Science major if they put in a little time learning about the subject matter. Anyway, if you want to go deeper I would STRONGLY suggest Mel Siff's book Supertraining. Even deeper yet, go with Strength and Power in Sport, edited by Komi (this book is a tough read for most - written for scientists for scientists and Graduate level Exercise Science students but I've had it since I was a junior in undergrad). Both are very hard to find (don't even think they have Supertraining on Amazon, but you can get it from elitefts.com if they don't).

4 out of 5 stars Useful Knowledge for Strength, Conditioning, and Lifelong Health.......2006-08-28

Used to train prospective strength and conditioning coaches for the NSCA CSCS exam, this book can also help anyone build a strong foundation of knowledge about how exercise improves the human body. Not just an exercise physiology text, this book includes gems like the classic Stone and Bryant periodized model of weight training (the three-phase progression from high-volume hypertrophy training to high-load strength training); the demystification of big lifts like the clean and press, the power pull, or the snatch; how heavy power training selectively thickens Type II muscle fibers; sports psychology and metabolic training; how the lower body is often undertrained; a more intelligent way to use progress strength training with DAPRE; and an unparalleled discussion on plyometrics. This book anchors its thought-provoking and definitive discussion with relevant references, helpfully cited in context so you can clearly see for yourself at the scientific evidence upon which this book--and much current knowledge in exercise science--is based. The treasures of this book must be extracted at the cost of dry science-speak writing (nouny, overuse of the verb "to be," and heavy reliance on the passive voice): as I read along, I found that selectively underlining and briefly restating key ideas in the margins of this text kept my attention. Not only personal trainers in training but consumers tired of glib books lacking citation of scientific evidence would find this book extremely useful, and certainly more accurate than many consumer fitness books currently on the market.

5 out of 5 stars all you need for the CSCS exam!.......2006-04-30

like kent_mc2 this is all you need for the CSCS exam. This and the Exam Content Descriptions. Do all the questions in each chapter and read the chapters that you are weak on and skim the chapters you feel strong in. Use the chapter questions to see if you need to go over the chapter again. This can be done in a few days if you have some kind of science or exercise science background or other PT training. Some of the basic sciences at the beginning can be a bit intimidating if you did not take basic sciences in college, but only a small percentage of the exam is basic sciences. I keep this book as a reference now.

5 out of 5 stars Thank You!.......2007-03-11

Thank you for writing this book! Every woman should own their own copy. Any home with adolescents should have it to read. This books covers being a woman from A-Z and it does so in a way that makes you feel proud.

5 out of 5 stars Got to have it!.......2007-03-08

I just bought this this book to send to my daughter who is a freshman in college. My mom bought an early edition for me when I went to college, and I bought an inbetween edition as a 30 year old. This is an essential reference for women of all ages. I love that it has informed intelligent women about their bodies since its first publication.

5 out of 5 stars This book should be in every woman's home.......2007-02-17

I just got this book and wished I'd had it in my teens, twenties, thirties, but thankfully now in my 40's I do. I bought two copies used. The 1984 edition and the 1998 edition. Now after reading the reviews for the 2005 edition I am going to get that new. The 2005 edition is the 8th edition and in 35 years has never gone out of print.

Truly a wealth of information and a treasure to have found. This is the kind of book you can flip thorough and start reading on any page and find something of interest. They even have their own internet site containing information about this book and related books.

The book is lavishly illustrated with drawings and photographs (including in the 1984 & 1998 editions an iconic one by Tee A. Corinne of a disabled person making love in a wheel chair).

The subjects cover every issue that a woman can encounter -

4 out of 5 stars Incredibly useful.......2007-01-16

I love this book and I sent it out to all my family and friends as holiday gifts this year. I love that it shows many taboo issues as normal, because they are.

The only thing that upset me was that they never explicitly suggested that the reader use at least two methods of birth control. They almost implied that if your one method didn't work, you could just get an abortion. I felt that they should have been adamant about the two-or-more method particularly after reading how often a method would fail in every one hundred uses.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource........2007-01-12

Provides a comprehensive, straight-forward, open-minded approach to all issues of women. Purchased to update my former copy, which I used as a resource when I taught high school students.

    Book Description

The second edition of this thorough reference is an invaluable tool for assessing cosmetic products, addressing both the quality of the product and the effect it has on the skin. Since a product's ultimate purpose is to benefit the skin, it is crucial to have an understanding of how the skin works, how and why a product may or may not penetrate it, and what care individual skin types and conditions may require. It is difficult to discuss product ingredients without correlating product performance to skin function. An expanded section on skin physiology and chemical concepts enables the reader to better understand product performance through a thorough explanation of how chemicals and ingredients interact. The various skin types, conditions, and appropriate ingredients for treatments provide a quick reference to address clients' needs. This enlarged second edition contains over 2,000 ingredients including 200 new and updated entries. Expanded information on antioxidants and their stability, new discussion on aging and sensitive skin, and function of SPF and new sunblock ingredients offering full spectrum sunscreen and sunblock for both UVA and UVB rays has been added.

    2 out of 5 stars Overpriced .......2007-09-18

There was very little that I found in this book that I didn't find in other resources on the subject. It's way overpriced for what it delivers.

    5 out of 5 stars Milady's Cosmetic Ingredients Dictionary.......2007-06-27

In addition to listing many standard ingredients, this book also lists botanicals which are listed by their English name with other common names listed right after. And they are cross-referenced. A very good brief review of skin physiology, function, components, structures and layers along with product penetration and testing and skin types and conditions enhance the book. Great for newbies or experienced skin care professionals.

    4 out of 5 stars Terrific Resource.......2005-10-17

The beauty business is wonderful, really it is. There are only a very few players that are truely dishonest when it comes to ingredients, for instance, "renaming" common ingredients. This book will help everyone keep it straight. As a beauty and lifestyle reporter, I keep it on my desk.

    5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC REFERENCE.......2005-10-10

I am currently studying beauty therapy and this book is my lifesaver! it is great for reference, general knowledge etc!

4 out of 5 stars Not to bad.......2005-09-13

The first few chapters I would call "Skin physiology for dummies", the science is much simplified, so don't expect to learn much here. However, the glossary of cosmetic ingredients is very decent, I would definatelly buy this book as a great reference.

      Book Description

With a strong empirical and market segmentation approach, this book focuses on how the Internet has changed the way people obtain information about potential purchases, giving readers the most up-to-date material on how technology is changing their lives as consumers. The Thirty-two mini-cases help readers learn by applying the theory, drawing on current business news to demonstrate specific consumer behavior concepts.

This edition now includes thirty-two Active Learning mini-cases. A clear consumer decision making model is set out in each chapter to facilitate learning–presented in the first chapter, this model serves as a structural framework for the concepts–the building blocks–examined in the following chapters. The book's final chapter ties all of these concepts together so readers see the interrelationships and relevance of individual concepts to consumer decision-making.

For those studying consumer behavior and/or marketing.

5 out of 5 stars Yep, it works!.......2007-09-19

I bought this for my mom, who was diagnosed with diabetes. She said this was incredibly informative and easy to read (as an example, she found out that a baked potato is the sugar-equivalent of eating several dozen tablespoons of sugar, or something wild like that). Anyhoo, she never heard of this book until I bought it for her and she has since given it to famiy members and friends to read. She has even highlighted passages. To me, those are pretty good indications that this book is a smart purchase.

      4 out of 5 stars Looking great.......2007-09-04

So much advice about diets and losing weight is out there on the market that you don't know which expert advice is really worth following. Should you look for food with less calories, less fat , less cabohydrates, less what? Sugar Busters clarifies the problem of why most of us are overweight and gives, in my opinion, an understandable and logical explanation to our misgivings while indicating to us which foods are most acceptable for those wanting to lose weight and which foods are anathema, i.e. don't even think of eating them. A surprisingly good, readable, enjoyable and informative book. Worth the money and time spent on reading it!

I've always been a healthy eater, attempting to choose low fat foods and healthy portions, but after a few years of decreased activity I was 65 pounds overweight. I read this book, and a light went on for me: it was not how much or little I was allowing myself to eat, but rather the type of foods I was eating. Everything set forth in this book made good medical sense to me. Even my doctor had told me, "If the cavemen did not have the food you are about to eat, choose something else. Enough of all the processed foods!" I should have listened sooner.

The book sets for the medical reasoning behind why some of us gain weight despite eating what others might think is a "healthy" diet. Minor substitutions and changes in what type of sugars I eat and when I eat them has helped me lose 60 pounds and keep it off!

The wonderful aspect of Sugar Busters is that the diet is a "lifelong way of eating" rather than some fad. In fact, this diet is prescribed as a medically sound way to prevent or control diabetes, which has become almost an epidemic in America. I have spent the last year using the tools I learned from this easy reading book to change my life, my body, and my outlook. People now want me to tell them how I got so healthy, while never wearing the frown of deprivation that other diets would put on my face. This eating plan has changed my life. I am not a religious person, but if I were, I'd want to preach about the merits of following this sound plan and getting a healthy body and mind in the process.

If you read this book, take the time to think about the concepts set forth, and make the easy changes to implement the principles in the book, you cannot avoid losing weight. It just works. I have never been hungry for a minute, and those 60 pounds are not going to return. I am 100% confident that this is the plan I have always been searching for.

Read the book and go for it!!! All you have to lose are those extra pounds.
