5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Step-by-Step Selling Guide.......2007-06-25

I speak around the world on lead generation and marketing strategy. Neil did an outstanding job crafting "The SPIN Selling Fieldbook" to give you a roadmap on how to master complex sales strategy.

There is no other resource I can think of where you can "easily perfect" your approach and positioning sales strategy.

Neil gives you step-by-step plan that anyone can follow in their quest to excel at marketing their products or services.

The SPIN Selling Fieldbook gives you valuable "hands on" tools. I recommend the "SPIN Selling Fieldbook."

It is an invaluable resource that any salesperson or sales executive should have in their personal library.

Joe Heller, Trust Cycle Selling

5 out of 5 stars Better than the standard Spin Selling Book.......2007-06-09

This field book is better than the original book was. If you are going to buy just one of the two you should probably just buy the field book. It allows you to apply the ideas very quickly.

5 out of 5 stars Practice makes perfect........2006-11-14

Usually is not enough to read a book to have the knowledge, you need to practice, and that is what this book helps to, giving you ideas on how to put SPIN method into practice.

3 out of 5 stars Nice book, but too easy after reading SPIN Selling.......2006-08-09

I bought this book together with SPIN Selling. I read the Fieldbook after reading SPIN Selling. If you've already read SPIN Selling, this book is not going to tell you much new things.

If you would read the Fieldbook instead of SPIN Selling, then I think the Fieldbook is not thorough enough, at least if you compare it to SPIN Selling.

In general I think the audience of this book is perhaps college students, or clever highschool students, but not really experienced salespeople. Maybe that's also because of the cartoons every now and then which make the book look like it's meant for younger people.

What I expected when I bought both books was that the Fieldbook offerd some transcriptions of salescalls, and an explanation of why certain aspects are wrong and how this could be improved using SPIN Selling. This was not really the case, it was more like a simple summary of SPIN Selling. So not really the Fieldbook I expected.

Anyway, the book is not bad, but I would not recommend to buy both SPIN Selling and the Fieldbook together. Also, if you're a serious and experienced salesperson I would recommend SPIN Selling. If you're new to sales or if you're still in college, I would recommend the Fieldbook.

5 out of 5 stars Indispensable part of the salesman's library.......2006-07-19

This book is a practical guide for implementing the principles learned in the original book about 'Spin selling', however it is not necessary to have read the other book to make good use of this one. I think the SPIN methodology is a most valuable contribution from Mr. Rackham to the field of large sales and this book gives sound help to implement it.

I have been using that line for years..."Hope is not a strategy" I recently purchased this book on a longgggg layover at SFO. (It was time well spent) You would be amazed at how many salespeople go into a sales call without a strategy or work on a deal for months to realize they are not at "Power" The principles in this book are truly a "Field Guide" to successful solution selling, and will save you many hours of on the Job training.

Happy Selling!

5 out of 5 stars Hope is Not a Strategy.......2007-05-07

What great insight into the real world of complex decision-making. I now see in such complex sales that the process is to work with the client on the larger issues, not wait until an RFP is done -- because you are then too late. Well worth the time to read.

5 out of 5 stars great book!.......2007-01-28

there r a lot of sales books. but this book deal with B2B and hi-tech sales. very clear, describe the situation well and improve the performance. it's a must to all sales, marketing and marcom managers of hi-tech companies.

5 out of 5 stars The best book on the complex sale I've read.......2007-01-16

This book hits the nail right on the head regarding the complex sale process and what it takes to be successful in a complex selling situation. Like all selling books, it starts a little slow and dwells in obvious theory for the first 4-5 chapters and has a system named with an acronym. But those flaws aside, the last two-thirds of this book has some absolutely great selling concepts. I bought this book for the ten sales reps who report to me, and a lot of the terminology in the book has found its way into our daily vernacular. I firmly believe if you follow the concepts in this book faithfully, success in complex selling is much more likely than using any other selling concepts that I've seen.

5 out of 5 stars Hopeful Strategy.......2006-11-15

Well...at the end of the day there IS a little hope involved, but if you did not work the strategy in this book for your complex sale, hope is all you got. When you are on the complex sale, you have this book and Mahan Khalsa's approach that blend together for a neat toolkit. I've had the opportunity to be part of a presentation from one of the principals at The Complex Sale and saw the tools in this book in action. Happy Selling & Good Luck!

Book Description

The second edition features a 220-term brand glossary and a premium softcover binding.

THE BRAND GAP is the first book to present a unified theory of brand. Whereas most books on branding are weighted toward either a strategic or creative approach, this book shows how both ways of thinking can unite to produce a “charismatic brand”—a brand that customers feel is essential to their lives. In an entertaining two-hour read you’ll learn:

• a new definition of brand
• the five essential disciplines of brand-building
• how branding is changing the dynamics of competition
• the three most powerful questions to ask about any brand
• why collaboration is the key to brand-building
• how design determines a customer’s experience
• how to test brand concepts quickly and cheaply
• the importance of managing brands from the inside

FROM THE BACK COVER

Not since McLuhan’s THE MEDIUM IS THE MESSAGE has a book compressed so many ideas into so few pages. Using the visual language of the boardroom, Neumeier presents the first unified theory of branding—a set of five disciplines to help companies bridge the gap between brand strategy and customer experience. Those with a grasp of branding will be inspired by the new perspectives they find here, and those who would like to understand it better will suddenly “get it.” This deceptively simple book offers everyone in the company access to “the most powerful business tool since the spreadsheet.”

“The surprise book of the year!” —John Moore, Fast Company

“The first book on brand that seems fresh and relevant.” —Ric Grefe, executive director of AIGA, the professional association for design

“A pleasure to read.”—David A. Aaker, author of BRAND PORTFOLIO STRATEGY and BUILDING STRONG BRANDS

“Cuts to the heart of what brand is all about.” —Susan Rockrise, worldwide brand director, Intel

“Read this book before your competitors do!” —Tom Kelley, general manager, IDEO

FROM THE INSIDE FLAPS

“A pleasure to read. THE BRAND GAP consistently provides deep, practical insights in a light, visual way. Discover the power of imagery and the role of research in building a heavy-duty brand—without the heavy-duty reading.” —David Aaker, author of BRAND LEADERSHIP and BUILDING STRONG BRANDS

“Finally, a book that cuts to the heart of what brand is all about—connecting the rational and the emotional, the theoretical and the practical, the logical and the magical to create a sustainable competitive advantage.” —Susan Rockrise, Worldwide Brand Director, Intel

In THE BRAND GAP, Neumeier reminds us that the ultimate moment of truth for all brands is the customer experience. Customer perceptions trump our own perceptions.” —Kurt Kuehn, senior VP of worldwide marketing and sales, UPS

“This is not just another book on brand. This is the ONLY book you’ll need to read in business, engineering, and design school.” —Clement Mok, design entrepreneur

“A well-managed brand is the lifeblood of any successful company—and Neumeier shows us exactly how to do it. Read this book before your competitors do!” —Tom Kelley, general manager of IDEO, co-author of THE ART OF INNOVATION

“THE BRAND GAP couldn’t be more timely. Just when we’re at our most skeptical about corporate motives, along comes a book that shows how to evaluate and develop a brand in a straightforward and honest manner.” —David Stuart, co-founder of The Partners, co-author of A SMILE IN THE MIND

“Must-reading for anyone who wants to understand how their business strategy will succeed or fail when put to the ultimate test: ‘Do customers perceive a difference that’s desirable?’” —Steve Harrington, director of strategy and operations, Hewlett-Packard

“The book slices like a hot knife through all the turgid, pseudo-academic nonsense that surrounds branding. It’s now on the course list for my graduate students, and new members of my team at Ogilvy get a copy with their training materials.” —Brian Collins, executive creative director, Ogilvy & Mather Worldwide

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The modern view of branding.......2007-09-15

if you want a quick and entertaining way of understanding what is a brand in the modern sense of the word, get this book. Even if you know already what "brand" and "branding" mean, this book will reset your brain into rethinking your business and where you are going with it. It is a must read for anyone involved in selling stuff or services out of an established franchise or license.

4 out of 5 stars Simple, Straightforward, Sensational.......2007-08-23

Marty Neumeier has written two "whiteboard" style books both dealing with branding and innovation - this is the first one. By whiteboard style, Neumeier's book is light on written content, moderate on visual content and layout, and heavy on basic, important, sharp ideas.

The book covers 5 principles to help bridge the gap between strategic thinking and creative 'magic' and uses a variety of visual and written metaphors, examples, and logical knowledge to do so. If you are looking for a text-heavy, super explanatory, in-depth type of book, then this isn't the one for you. If you're looking to focus your mindset when it comes to innovative branding, this is a great, go-to book to get through in a short amount of time.

The two main things I liked about this book were the fact it actually followed a lot of its own principles in terms of how it was designed/set up etc. and it also packed a lot of universality into these generic yet focused, sensical tips.

Case in point...here is what you'll get out of the book if you are:

A Student/Novice in the Field: Students will love this book to help them review a lot of what's happening in marketing right now, and the 5 guiding principles can help them innovate at their future workplaces. The expanded edition of this book includes a 200 word glossary of advertising terms that'll also help students and novices talk the talk.

Agencies: will delight at the tests Neumeier asks you to go through when developing a brand, particularly graphically in the "icon/avatar" section. The real-life examples of successful businesses identify the longevity of the brands and how it is obtained, giving hints to marketing/advertising agencies how to get that same magic formula.

Businesses: whether small or large, this is a great book to have. If you have an internal promotions/marketing department, this book should be distributed to the head of your branding staff to help them focus your company's direction in the market. If you are the owner of a small business without an internal marketing department, this book can help introduce you to the fundamental principles of branding that you can then discuss with an external agency.

Overall a great quick read that kept me hooked, never bored, and always thinking. The summative list of the main topics discussed throughout the book at the end was extremely helpful, although the glossary was kind of out of place as half the words in the glossary aren't used in the text. Probably helpful for beginners in the ad industry though.

5 out of 5 stars Considerations for Brand-Building.......2007-08-19

Fantastic, a quick-read with deep insights, packed with timeless, necessary wisdom anyone who sells anything will benefit from reading. The Take-Home lessons in the back are a bonus (bullet points from the book), and the pages I'll review over time.

5 out of 5 stars perfect.......2007-05-24

This book is entertaining and packed with wisdom! The book arrived quickly, was in perfect shape and at a good price.

5 out of 5 stars Must have for Corporate/InHouse designers.......2007-03-10

This is a great resources for communicating clearly the importance of brand consistency. Read it. Then do it. Good luck my fellow corporate designers. We are a rare and lonely breed.

5 out of 5 stars The very best pricing manual.......2007-09-23

I bought a second copy of this book after loaning it to too many people to know who had had it last.

The book is not light reading, is highly technical and has more than a little math to comprehend. But, it is worth it.

The strategic thinking is very focused.

If you are stuck on how to price your product or how to combat price competition, read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Looking for guidance/framework on how to price our products ..........2007-03-08

We have the challenge of taking new products and services to the marketplace and really were looking form some guidance on a place to start. The area we are working in is really developing a new market as well. So we were wondering "What Price do we place on these product and services?"

We could not afford the experts on pricing (aka Strategic Pricing Group now part of The Monitor Group). And were looking for a place to start. All research including reviews from Amazon pointed us to start with this book. To myself and our endeavor, it the first 3 weeks of owning the book, I have read several chapters multiple times and the foundation framework on pricing is shares has already proven to be worth many times the price of the book.

On top of it, it is easy to read. Thanks to the people who took the time to make this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-02-18

This book is a great guide to the topic of pricing. I'm an MBA student and I believe students as well as professionals can benefit from reading this book. It contains structures and frameworks to work out a tailored pricing strategy and they all make sense. Lots of good examples from business practice illustrate the application of the theories.
The book is relatively quantitative for a marketing book, which I find great because there is no argumentation based on psychology and belief, but on quantifiable parameters - one can see the consulting practice of the authors.
What the book pretty much lacks is a citing of new academic research studies of the topics discussed. There are extensive references, however.
All in all a great book to newcomers in pricing as well as experienced pricers.

5 out of 5 stars Excellant........2007-02-11

This is one of the best books in pricing. My Pricing professor recommended that I buy this and said that marketing managers regularly refer to this book in practice. This is a great buy.

3 out of 5 stars Superseded by: "Selling is Dead".......2007-07-07

In it's day this would rate six stars out of five, but it's been superseded by "Selling is Dead" authored by Marc Miller and Jason Sinkovitz. In fact, the authors are students of Mr. Rackham and give him ample credit for the ground breaking work of "Major Account Sales Strategy."

4 out of 5 stars Spin Selling is his best; this is very good.......2007-02-04

A good effort. Major accounts are the key to all solid selling; Rackman is always good to read. What company wouldn't want their people to read a selling book? See also Strategic Selling by Miller and Sales Skills by Simply Media. Amazon has both.

5 out of 5 stars SPIN Theory gets you on the table, this book tells you how to get the final business.......2007-01-21

I thought SPIN theory is what you need first, but after reading this book, based on my personal experience, use of SPIN theory earns the opportunity for one to get on the table, but doesn't mean the business is in your hand. There are few more phases that you have to go through and this book talks through that. Just because the customer has realized a need for something, does not make them write the check -- lot of other things come into play such as do I need this now, am I making the correct decision in going with the choice etc. Must read for some one who is trying to do sales.

Forget business sales, my bar for testing any of these theories is not at work, but at home -- I always try and test these theories at home (with my family) and if it works at home, then IT obviously works outside.

Great book to read.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent .......2006-07-19

If the title of the book suggests you something you are looking for, don't hesitate and buy it. It is excellent. It displays a completely actionable model of the selling -or buying- cycle. It describes the phases of the cycle and it gives the strategic principles to follow in each one of them. Mr. Rackham is a true expert in this field.

5 out of 5 stars Top 5 all time best sales books.......2005-10-26

This book is in my top 5 all time best written sales books ever. Neils approach is unique, it stands the test of time. He talks about the buyers cycle as it relates to the sellers process. They need to be in alignment...if not, you will not get the sale. This book is a must read for anyone selling. A good compliment to SPIN and really any value based selling methodology including ROI Selling.

Book Description

In this path-breaking new book, best-selling author and leading go-to-market strategist Larry Friedman provides a practical and battle-tested approach for taking products, services, divisions, or even an entire company to market!

Drawing on dozens of examples and best-practices across a variety of industries, 'Go To Market Strategy' lays out a clear and actionable blueprint for building a winning go-to-market plan - one that will enable you to do more business, with more customers, more often, and more profitably.

In this book you'll find all of the techniques and tools you need to answer today's crucial go-to-market questions:

· Which markets offer the best opportunities for profitable growth?

· What do my target customers need? How can I do a lot more business with them?

· What mix of channels and partners will help me reach and sell to the most customers at the lowest possible cost?

· Do I have the right product or solution? How can I create broader customer interest in my offerings?

· Do I have a winning value proposition? What would make the 'message' more compelling - and drive more purchasing activity?

'Go To Market Strategy' is not about incremental change. 5 out of 5 stars Great resource for entrpreneurs / small businesses.......2006-08-10

I strenuously disagree with the reviewer below who said this book is for big businesses rather than entrepreneurs. I'm an entrepreneur and this book has played an important role in my ability to build my business. A few years ago, a partner and I started a company and grew to 15 employees. We had a superb service to offer, but were not educated about how to sell it, and sales were leveling off. Stymied, we delved into atleast 20 books, seminars, and training events to learn how to "scale" our business. Honestly, nothing helped much. Then we found this book on Amazon. Go To Market Strategy helped us get organized, ask all the right questions, and put some simple ideas into use, to grow to 50 employees last month. After reading this book, we moved away somewhat from our "web fetish" and got much more serious about finding good partners, building our own small but effective sales group, and working with our customers to understand their needs and become more responsive. Many of the things we did came right out of this book. This book is *very* organized and systematic, breaking the sometimes overwhelming task of building a business into simple, proven tools which we were able to put to use. This book is also extremely well written, just lightyears ahead of the writing quality of other marketing books we bought. The author is very insightful and truly knows the ins and outs of "selling more stuff to more customers" as he puts it. I am sure this book is useful to Big Corporate America, but to me it's a wonderful resource for the small, struggling business.

5 out of 5 stars Take your marketing to the next level!.......2006-05-07

Excellent marketing book by L. Freidman, who has written a few other good ones, too. Extremely interesting & helpful ideas, examples and tools for aligning your marketing strategies and your tactics with your customers. I see copies of this book floating around our and partners' offices all the time. Definitely worth reading and chewing on.

5 out of 5 stars Very comprehensive and practical !!!.......2005-10-11

Author Friedman provides a very comprehensive picture of how to take products and services to market, in the most efficient and effective ways. This book is practical - it's more for sales management and marketing executives than for students and academicians. Going to market today is complex and risky, and difficult to figure out the right mix of people, channels (Internet, phone, mail, partners, etc). This book helps sort it all out in a well structured way. I highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Very instructive for goers-to-market.......2005-09-08

Friedman gives the whole go-to-market strategy picture, explains the key points and relationships between different aspects of customer and market analysis, channel model construction, channel management etc. Can easily be used as a manual for actual go-to-market and channel development.

1 out of 5 stars Misleading title draws wrong reader........2005-09-04

Friedman certainly seems to know what he's talking about. I wouldn't know since I ordered the book to learn about how to enter the market with a new product as a small entrepreneur. Friedman's advice is geared to the large corporation with large resources for research and marketing. He does not address the objectives stated in the title from the perspective and access to resources of the small business. For this type of reader the information may be interesting from a theoretical standpoint but I certainly found no practical advice to help my situation.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Marketing Professionals.......2003-07-30

When I first ordered Direct Marketing it sat untouched on my desk for several weeks. At two inches thick (I measured it), I was dreading another boring tome that took a thousand words to say what could have been covered in ten. When I finally cracked the cover, I was pleasantly surprised.

Not only is Direct Marketing devoid of fluff, every word is packed with the insight of a gentleman who has obviously earned his knowledge from the school of hard knocks. As I continued to read the fourth edition of Direct Marketing I found that it is more than a book on direct mail, it's an essential read on marketing in general:

* Nash makes it easy to understand the importance and mechanics of marketing measurement and metrics.

* While emphasizing the accountability and predictability of direct marketing, Nash does not discount general marketing knowledge.

* Nash makes planning practical and concise. The chapter on marketing plans is the best coverage of the topic that I've seen.

* The Internet and other interactive vehicles are fully embraced.

In short, if you're a marketing professional, buy this book.

Wonderful! Straight to the point. Packed with facts, not fluff. No pipe-dreams. Money making, practical, and thought provoking. There is so much information and advice here, it could have easily been three or four books. Well worth the full price -- a bargain on amazon. Buy it!

Book Description

A brand’s meaning—how it resonates in the public heart and mind—is a company’s most valuable competitive advantage. Yet, few companies really know how brand meaning works, how to manage it, and how to use brand meaning strategically. Written by best-selling author Carol S. Pearson (The Hero Within) and branding guru Margaret Mark, this groundbreaking book provides the illusive and compelling answer. Using studies drawn from the experiences of Nike, Marlboro, Ivory and other powerhouse brands, the authors show that the most successful brands are those that most effectively correspond to fundamental patterns in the unconscious mind known as archetypes. The book provides tools and strategies to:
• Implement a proven system for identifying the most appropriate and leverageable archetypes for any company and/or brand
• Harness the power of the archetype to align corporate strategy to sustain competitive advantage

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-09-14

I was disappointed by the lack of rigorous thinking in this book.

Sure, different companies have different personalities and personality is part of the brand. We could even create our own set of Jungian archetypical brand personalities, and go about attaching them to different brands.

But now for a test. Is Coca Cola a Creator -- helping inspire its users to do great bubbly things? Is it a Caregiver -- showing care for others? Maybe it's a Ruler -- a tough competitor and long the top dog in Cola Wars? How about a Jester -- always at the center of a good time? Or just it's just the drink for Regular Guys and Gals? Look at the ads -- maybe its a Lover or at least a drink for Lovers sharing a soda with two straws? Or, how about an almost Heroic presence, again from ads? Sometimes, it has a sort of Outlaw feel (with folks like Mean Joe Greene playing Robin Hood handing a Coke to a kid). In the old days Coca Cola ads praised it both for giving energy and a calming effect -- though there's no archetype for either of those. So, maybe it is more a Magician -- think of some of those magical ads past and animated present and its ability to give both energy and calm the soul. Given Coca Cola's global ubiquity and appeal, it might well be the drink of Explorers. It might even be (given the caffeine) the energy drink for yuppie Sages? Well, it turns out (according to the authors), that Coke is clearly so successful because it's an "Innocent." The toughest competitor in the Cola Wars, a mixture of caffeine, water, and sugar, almost wizened from a century of success -- yeah, it's clearly an Innocent and that explains everything.

My point is that the book lacks any sense of rigor, proof, or science-like basis in fact. The authors do a clever job of retrofitting achetypes to brands, and several of the cases are interesting, but the whole thing appears to work better in hindsight than proven principles for brand success. One could equally well, in this reviewers opinion, talk about aligning your brand with top-rated TV shows, Tarot cards, signs of the Zodiac, or (with at least a tiny bit of science) Myers-Briggs personality types --- "proving" the case with stories about how GE, Toyota, Google, etc. etc. all fit some stellar or personality pattern.

The kernel of truth in the book is that people like their brands, products, and companies to have a predicatable, attractive, and aspirational subtext. Creating an enduring and attractive personality makes sense, at least as long as the personality remains relevant.

Speaking of personalities, what's the Jungian archetype for the Maytag repair man? Is he a Regular Guy, sidekick to a Hero, or a Jester? Is the Ultimate Driving Machine (BMW) a Hero or an Explorer . . . with maybe the 3 Series for Regular Guys and Gals with higher aspirations than Honda and Toyota owners? No doubt the authors could tell us, though I doubt their hindsight would be of much value in predicting past or future business success.

What might be of value to some readers, especially those who think Jung had the last meaningful words on human decision making, is that some structure (almost any structure, even the Yellow Pages or TV guide) can be useful in brainstorming product and brand alternatives.

1 out of 5 stars Wow, a new archetype!.......2007-08-06

Amazing... discover some (partial) new knowledge of psychology for the sole purpose of manipulating and profiting from others!
While this is standard for advertising types, it would only be fair of Pearson to discuss the other core archtypes at work here: the Crook, the Scam Artist, the Amoral Profiteer. These are real archetypes, that most readers of this book are living. Make money Peason, ok, but face your shadow and dont be part of the human problem; be part of the solution.

5 out of 5 stars Dry but valuable.......2007-07-28

Alright, I'll be the first to admit it; this book is not an easy read. In fact, I'd call it a slog (and I'm a readaholic who can't put down the back of a cereal box!). But, the concepts presented are worth the work. The authors explain what's so darn compelling about Apple's logo, what type of client you want to speak to, and what they need you to say to make a connection with them. Plus much, much more.

So if you're trying to get a handle on branding and figure out what will work for you, grab this book. Thankfully, although it is dry as bone, it's fairly skim-friendly. So do what I did and skip the parts that don't apply or get too boring, and just look at the handy call-out boxes of bulleted info. You'll get the meat of the book without having to work so hard.

4 out of 5 stars A Brand Is Never Just A Logo.......2007-03-08

If you're in the business of building brands. positioning products and adding value to organizations, this is a must-read. Simply organized, easy to follow and full of insight and thought, this book belongs on the office desk of every one who's involved in the science and art of marketing and brand development.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful.......2006-11-11

This book draws some rock-solid suggestions about how companies can build successful brands by tapping into the fables and stories that are hardwired into our DNA. Uses insightful examples and makes what could have been a pretty dry read into a book that I actually read cover to cover on a cross-country flight. That's an achievement as generally five minutes spent reading on an airplane puts me into a deep sleep.

5 out of 5 stars Setting your brand on fire........2001-06-09

There are so many books on the market that discuss the concept of 'brand' from so many different points of view, that it's difficult to sort out the good from the bad. This is one of the good ones.

Moon and Millison define the basic concepts around brand. They explain in clear buzzword-light language what influences the growth and positioning of a brand. Finally, they provide ample and well-explained pointers to further reading to help understand some of their basic ideas more clearly.

As a consultant working for a systems integrator, one of the things that impressed me the most was the focus on execution. Many books about branding seem to imply that the technical details are irrelevant to brand success, but _Firebrands_ makes the point that a relationship with a customer only has brand value when supported by appropriate policies, training, and technical infrastructure. This is a message that can't be, IMO, repeated often enough.

Well worth the time to read.

5 out of 5 stars my review.......2001-03-08

I have read Firebrands and found it extremely useful. As a systems integrator in St. Louis, I have used this book to help my clients understand the importance of a technical infrastructure in building a vibrant brand.... Mind you, this is not a 60 second brand manager book.

5 out of 5 stars Not Hype! A System for Reality...and innovation........2001-03-05

Firebr@nds is not a bedside book, it's a cookbook, a tool for being AT CAUSE when it comes to building successful, powerful communications for the internet.

As a Technology Interface Architect , the building of brand into the interaction of the product is vital to it's success.

My clients over the past 12 years have been besieged by what appears to them this mysterious thing out there that will grow over some process, that we will somehow invoke, and it will be successful if the powers that be are on our side.

This book makes it all very clear, while eliciting sympathy for all of us who have built brands. A genuine appreciation for its complexity is gained as you read a systemization of brandbuilding in Firebr@ands.

Moon has given us a thorough and deep taxonomy for building the brand from many different pragmatic angles. The dramatic distinctions in language make it easy to use the language as a tool in any company when it comes to educating organizations in building brand.

This is a book that I will return to over and over again as I help my clients grow their products into the future. It was a very brave, and necessary book to write. BRAVO!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Beyond the Frontiers - A genetic approach to the Brand.......2001-03-01

As the Chief Technical Officer of a Texas based e-services and print communication firm, I live in this interactive brandspace on a daily basis. The problem with this brave new world of pixels is simply that much is said and much is written but little intelligent communication occurs. I find the innovative and far reaching approach taken by Michael Moon to be the de facto foundation for the next "big thing".

The approach that one must take to these new media spaces and channels is not readily discernible from the clearly defined trails blazed in the more traditional areas of branding. This new territory is as different as the Earth is from the Moon [no pun intended]. The book travels beyond the areas marked as "unknown - there be dragons here" and opens a clear and understandable path into formerly mysterious areas.

What we need out here in the field is less hype and more substance. Firebrands is a rational, ground breaking treatise on the evolution of Branding. This is a pivotal work that serves as a wonderful deskside companion, as indispensible to me as my spell checker or my browser.

Michaels' best practices mental evolution from the time of the Jeff Martin led Digital Brand Building Seminars of the mid-90's to this opus show an extraordinary depth and breadth of thought and research . The Firebrands book is the Gray's Anatomy of Brand "science".

As my company moves forward with ground breaking, market defining services in the area of brand guaranty we will continue to consult the Firebrands roadmap. We anxiously await any follow-up materials that might come from this mind trust.

Be warned - this is not a shallow pop-business, executive book of the hour read. This is a genetic level approach to a new mindset. It must be read slowly, deliberately, and with a totally open mind. The graphics are not simply illustrative they are literally a book unto themselves. Read this brandspace atlas one chapter at a time, review the graphics, and with time and reflection you will understand.
