Book Description
In this revised and updated paperback edition, master negotiator Roger Dawson gives salespeople an arsenal of tools that can be implemented easily and immediately to enable a quantum leap in sales.
He shows salespeople how to:
* Use pressure points to control the negotiating situation.
* Downplay the importance of money.
* Ask for more than one expects to get.
* Negotiate with individuals from other cultures.
* Master the nine elements of power that control negotiating situations.
* Analyze personality styles and adapt to them.
* Master the 24 power closes.
This is not a dull, dry treatise full theory. Nor is it a handbook of tricks and scams meant to manipulate others. It is the most complete book ever written specifically for salespeople about the process of negotiation.
Customer Reviews:
Customers are more slick than salespeople.......2007-01-09
Customers have learned to get creative when giving salespeople reasons they can not buy or commit to a purchase. The people who get bombarded by salespeople have gotten the most creative. They have learned what to sale to get someone off their back. This is a great illustration of the objections you get, why you get them and how to dig even deeper to uncover the real objection. Whether you're just starting out or have been in sales for over 15 years like I have, this is a great tool for anyone who likes to keep up with the changing world of sales.
Secrets of Power Negotiating for Salespeople: Inside Secrets from a Master Negotiator.......2005-08-18
I am enjoying this book. I have not yet completed reading the peice, but I do think that there are very many valuable messages. ON A SIDE NOTE. THE QUALITY OF THE BOOK ITSELF IS TERRIBLE. AS I ADVANCE THROUGH THE BOOK, PAGE BY PAGE, THE BOOK IS FALLILNG APART. WHOEVER BOUND THE BOOK NEEDS TO BE CONTACTED. ANY ADVICE, AS TO HOW TO HOLD THE BOOK TOGETHER WOULD BE APPRECIATED!!!!!!!!!
This book is amazing!!!.......2005-02-22
Dawson enlights you with all the empiric knowledge of negotiation put in this masterbook. This is a MUST for all salesman. It covers from begining negotiation to close ups.
I just started it yesterday and could not stop.
If you want to get your negotiation skills a jump-up, this is the book for you.
Simple and direct to the point.......2004-11-14
There is no framework, nor any theory; you may find many of the "tricks" are common-sense but which are we commonly overlook or neglect. A book that teaches you tactics that can be put into use right away. It is worth to read this book
Highly Recommended!.......2001-03-24
While the market is flooded with books on how to pitch, sell, wrangle and close a deal, this book rises well above most of them. Author Roger Dawson takes salespeople step by step through the economic and psychological aspects of successful negotiating. Expertly and conversationally written, and strategically structured, this book actually delivers what its title promises: plenty of secrets about power negotiating. View your job in sales as a chess game you can control because you know the rules, from the opening gambit to the power plays in the middle, to the all-important close. If you've read Dawson's Secrets of Power Negotiating, you'll find a good bit of repetition here, but even when he cites the same gambits, he discusses using them to make sales. You only need to read one of the two books, but we [...] say make it this one if you're in sales. Learn these gambits, so you can say, "Checkmate."

Many so-called marketing experts wrtie books on how to market products. But it is rare to find an actual practitioner who not only has acheived marketing success himself (and many times over) but is able to express himself so beautifully in prose. Joseph Sugarman has written a book that every marketing person or anygbody in business should definitely read. The book is filled with marketing strategies that he taught for many years. It provides valuable lessons--all sandwiched in between actual marketing examples. A very valuable book for anybody in marketing or wanting to understand marketing.

One of the Best 5 Copywriting Books Ever Written.......2004-04-21
Second in the "Secrets" series by Joe Sugarman, this outstanding book provides DOZENS of full page ads written by Sugarman, along with the story of how he conceived the idea for the product, and what became of the promotion. This book is brilliant, and one of my Top 5 copywriting books of all time. For the price, it is the bargain of a lifetime. Get it now before it goes out of print and becomes one of those "impossible to find" classics. Truly an awesome book.

With the information Joe shared, I've been forced to rethink my entire approach to copywriting! Discover how Joe thinks, as he takes you by the hand on a tour through his most successful ads from his now legendary, JS & A catalogue. His amazing stories will make you laugh. They'll make you cry. Brilliant insights from an entrepreneur who has seen it all!.......2002-01-07
Few writers are as clear, as candid and as helpful as Joe Sugarman. He not only packs his "Secrets" books with invaluable lessons that have taken him decades to learn, but he gives you fascinating, behind-the-scenes looks at dozens of advertising and marketing campaigns. From concept to completion, Joe lays out everything you could possibly hope to learn about writing compelling and profitable copy. But most important of all, Joe's books draw as much from his failures as his successes, making them infinitely more valuable that those that sell nothing but pipe dreams. As for those who complained that Joe's material is dated, sure some of it is dated as the examples literally span decades. But keep in mind, while tastes and styles may change, human nature does not. And no one understands human nature better than Joe Sugarman. His insights are timeless and their value, priceless.
Important Resource to Help in your Marketing Efforts.......2002-01-06
Marketing is not an easy career, however Joe Sugarman's experience can help even the most experienced expert. Most good information in this field is obtained for at least several hundred dollars, Joe's work is an exception. For such a meager price you can get alot of entertaining advice about what works and what doesn't in the world of marketing. You will be hard pressed to walk away from this book without several ideas about what to do with your current project or what to begin now.
Mail order wisdom.......2002-01-06
There are tons of marketing books, but in this one Sugarman tells you his success secrets for the specific area of marketing in which he is a proven master -- mail order. If you sell products directly from TV, space ads, or direct mail, and your promotions ask for the order rather than build brand awareness, this book can help you dramatically boost your response rates and profits.
Book Description
"Holden's book is rich with wisdom and sage advice and should be required reading for any salesperson who wants to understand how to merge a sales strategy and a political strategy to win the hearts of their customers' Power Base."-Rodney D. Cotton, Vice President, Sales-United States, Baxter Healthcare, Renal Division.
"Jim Holden's book is for serious salespeople and executives who are focused on winning. It provides insights, techniques, and everyday tools to reach the highest possible level of success. The book is most insightful and is a required reading and work tool for enterprise salespeople and executives."-Grant Evans, Vice President, Sales and Marketing Identicator Technology.
"The Holden Power Base Selling techniques have provided our sales teams with a common language from which to develop and plan strategies and tactics."- Colin Latham, President and CEO, MT&T (Canada).
"Power Base Selling is essential. . . . The book is rich with lessons such as how to avoid being defeated by desperate 'end-games,' and how to 'snatch various victories from the jaws of defeat.' The conclusion is a revealing 'self-test.'. . . [Holden's] principles are more applicable today than ever."- Glenn W. Coleman, President, South Africa Branch, Lockheed Martin Overseas Services Corporation.
Customer Reviews:
This book says it all.......2007-10-04
From the get-go, the book sets the stage - you only lose sales to the next best alternative by being outsold. Everything else is an excuse.
Having read several books on the topic of sales strategy, as well as taking training on the subject, this book really nicely summarizes everything I've seen covered on the topic of strategy (and then some).
Highly recommended.
This is no "one minute" sales guide.......2004-07-13
Forget all the Zig Ziglar-type sales technique books! This is the real deal; It's about methodology, not how to glad hand or do an end run around the CFO or purchasing manager. If you want to understand the nature of truly competitive selling read this book, then watch the movie "Glegarry Glen Ross" for contrast. We trained the worldwide sales force of a F500 company on the Holden methodology. Results speak for themselves
This book gets better every time I read it!!.......2002-04-19
The first time I read Power Base Selling, I thought it was great. Now that I have just re-read it, I am blown away by points that I missed the first time around. I recommend that everyone read it, apply it and then read it again -- it not only sharpins your political skills in selling, but in life.
Great sales book...as long as it is not your only approach.......2001-12-13
Almost all sales books have two major flaws: 1) They give you high level advise, such as "have a strategy" without giving you the "rubber-meets-the-road" actions to take. 2) They expect you to operate within a vaccuum where their selling system or methodology will work every time.
Power Base selling does not contain the first flaw and does an admirable job of trying to avoid the second. It is the first and best book I have read attacking the problem of organizational politics and the human dynamics in a corporate or complex selling environment. It gives very practical ideas on what to do in most political/selling situations to tilt the decision in your favor.
What this book does not do, nor attempt to do, is discuss the importance of a value proposition and the solution you are trying to sell. This is a great book to complement other famous sales books such as "Solution Selling."
I recommend this book highly to anyone that sells in a complex sales world.
Everything is "bought and sold" for a reason..........2001-06-12
Great read. Maybe too many stories...yet they explain his point in a clear sense. If you read between the lines and get the big picture of his strategic principles you can no doubt improve you sales performance.

Good Book not for begginers........2006-11-04
This book goes to the psycologic side of the sales and how to convince tje people to buy from you instead to sale to Them. It's very simple tom understand, has a lot of examples. It's not a how to book. If you are new in sales read something elese.
Gimicks that may work selling pencils, but..........2005-07-15
They sure won't work if you are selling big ticket items, such as houses, cars, planes, factory equipment or the like.
If you are looking for a difficult to master but good book, go to Rackham's SPIN selling. It is both research based AND effective. Dawson is just a rehash of every sales gimmick you or he has ever read about.
If you look, you will see I liked his negotiation gimmicks -- but only if tempered with other's work to set tone and style (and more). In sales, unlike negotiation, the gimmicks tend to be instant death.
Where's the bibliography.......2005-04-22
I flipped through this book in the book store. It's a great little book. It has all sorts of "tricks" for getting people to do what you want them to do. In fact, a lot of his ideas were paraphrased wholesale from Robert Cialdini. I read a little further. There's some NLP thrown in too. I read a little further, and saw some things that weren't familiar to me.
I really wish the author quoted his sources instead of making it seem like he was telling you all these things from firsthand experience instead of from a handful of books, but as a collection, it's pretty good. I flipped around for footnotes, a bibliography, endnotes, anything to let me know what his sources were, but there were none.
Since I was only familiar with about 60 to 70% of his material, I'd pick it up just to have the complete list, but I'd rather go back to the original sources. Perhaps that's why he didn't include a bibliography? Otherwise he'd be generating sales for someone else.
Anyway, if you're not familiar with these things, get Influence by Cialdini and Frogs into Princes by Bandler & Grinder. If you are, well, this book is a nice summation, and adds some new stuff as well.
Packed With Knowledge!.......2004-06-09
Roger Dawson, a top speaker and writer on negotiation and persuasion, has written, in fact, a very persuasive book. Solid research that identifies effective sales strategies and explains why they work sets Dawson's book apart from many other volumes on sales techniques - even when his advice is repetitive. He warns you away from manipulation, though he doesn't hesitate to use some forms of it, along with psychological insight, time pressure, friendship, subliminal messages and outright emotion to persuade clients to buy. Dawson writes in an easy-to-read, breezy, yet authoritative style and includes tricks, techniques, clever anecdotes and chapter summaries. The book is as well organized as a speech in which Dawson tells you what he is going to say, says it and then tells you what he just said. We recommend this book to people who want to sell better, and who have the starch to use intense powers of persuasion.

a waste of time and money.......2007-10-08
Should have been titled "How to create Outrageous eTrash". This is not marketing you want to imitate, Vitale's marketing style only insults customers and rips them off.
SPAM as "Outrageous marketing"?.......2007-10-07
I don't think SPAM as "Outrageous Marketing" warrants my money. I feel ripped off. I think other customers feel the same way.

Roger Dawson at his best ! Keep reading about MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE.......2006-01-19
You can't go wrong with ANY of his book. Don't look further, don't settle for less.
Unbelievable thing has happened to me -- I followed the advise in the book and received the promotion I wanted. Funny thing is that Roger warned that this method DOES work, and I didn't think it would work, but decided to give it a try.
Have YOU ever dreamt of getting a promotion shortly after starting a new job ??? I haven't, but it happened to me.
Thank you Mr. Dawson!!!!!!!
A psychological masterpiece.......2005-10-24
Wow. That's all I have to say. I'm halfway through this book, looking to finish it today (lol dreaming to), and I'm absolutely amazed. I have a hobby of studying books on psychology and sociology, and I've came across some good ones and some absolute rip-offs. Some of the bad ones go over some persuasion techniques that are very cliche and you have probably already heard of, and also don't offer much in the realm of content. In this book, however, every page has something to offer, and and it's all unique. What I expected out of this book was either a complete rip-off or that only a small bit of it would be useful, but I was very surprised at how satisfied I was with it. Among all the techniques in there I've found a lot that can be used in every day life, and I can actually imagine them working. It explains a lot about persuasion techniques you've came across but didn't recognize as such, and opens your eyes to an entirely new world of persuasion altogether. I'm actually planning on reading this book two or three times, and I think after that I might actually be a better persuader than I was before I bought it. All in all, this book is very professional and offers tons and tons of content. The authors life, which he uses ocassionally for examples in his techniques, shows how amazingly successful he is without it seeming like he's bragging. He has rented yaghts, probably went to every country in the world, has hundreds of thousands, if not millions of dollars, climbs mountains, crazy. Anyway, if you're into persusasion I highly recommend this book. You will not be disappointed.
Informative and Entertaining to Read.......2004-11-06
Some of the topics in this book are just common-sense, some have been widely covered elsewhere and at much greater length (e.g. Cialdini's books on Influence), but all in all this is a lovely selection of the principles of persuasion and some case stories are very entertaining to read.
This book is information-rich, but there is still more you may want to learn to enhance your persuasive skills, such as Neuro-Linguistic Programming and Hypnotic Language Patterns.
One of the best business books I've read.......2002-07-10
Wow! I'm impressed! This is one of the best-researched, most thorough books on persuasion that I've had the pleasure of reading. Best of all - it's not just theory. The author, Roger Dawson adds tons of practical examples and applications for each technique. That means you can use this stuff immediately. By far one the best business books I've read in some time.
Secrets of Power Persuasion: Everything You'll Ever Need to.......2002-07-09
Great book. Extremely insightful. This book brings together lessons from many other disciplines and supplies new perspectives that are easy to apply. The book is easy to read and a diversified literary and historical background allow you to appreciate the subtle points that really demonstrate expertise in persuasion.

Customer Reviews:
Ill organized, little content.......2003-11-11
I wanted this book to be a great book. It's small, but high-priced as I paid $32 list for it at the book store. If you are a certified financial planner then you may need to bump my 2 ranking to 3 or 4.
There's just a bunch of disconnected stories with several major points on how to network by doing favors for others. This topic is important and I have no doubt the authors do well with it. But the book needs serious editing.
The printing is neat, the pages appear formatted well. But the paragraphs must have been shaken and not stirred. There seems to be little connection from one paragraph to the other.

This books describes business networking as it SHOULD be........2003-06-27
The author has done a masterful job of capturing the quintessential art of networking - with a dose of a Southern hospitality and the unselfish ambitions of a saint. He has given a name to the process of continually building a network of people to whom you become a catalyst for introduction and connectivity to others who can help them. In the end, your personal gain is based on the inherent value built in your relationships and those you have spawned. The results are - NetWeaving.
The sum of this strategy results in a win-win-win strategy, a new paradign described by Littell where you leverage the value of networking among others by forebearing and deferring your personal advantages, in favor of connecting others who will benefit by your introduction.
Kudoos for Bob Littell and NetWeaving. The world and the business community will be greatly enriched by following the concepts advocated in this book.
TEN SECRETS OR TEN STORIES?? wheres the beef??.......2003-02-16
As a newly appointed board member for the Home Improvement Council in Buffalo, NY, I was looking for ways to stimulate the participation of our members. I heard of a concept called netweaving at a Jeffrey Gitomer Seminar(who is amazing). I went in search for related material to help me with my goal. This was the only book of it's kind. I was a little shocked at the sticker price but thought that it would be money well spent! I was wrong. The authors seem to have a weatlth of knowledge on the subject, according to the letters they put after their names. While reading this 154 page paperback, you get bogged down with their cute little success stories how "netweaving worked for them". The real meat of the book, could literally be condensed into a brochure or pamphlet. I am not a literary expert but with anything I read, I want a challenge, you won't find that here. This book reads like a newspaper with a sixth grade reading level, it also has the tone of a "self-help" book. I was disappointed because this book could have been groundbreaking for the "netweaving" approach, but it is drowing in its own self righteousness. Hey, if anyone wants to buy it, let me know-New Condition! Not even read once!

I loved the Canadian perspective.......2007-04-14
It was all "razzle dazzle" style, but some good simple ways to market when YOU are the product. I work as a professional entertainer, so I am always looking for good books on how to market ME and my services.
I highly recommend it!
Great practical aspects for every marketer.......2002-03-04

Read it to fine tune your marketing and personal skills
great book for small firm starting up, or regenerating.......2001-07-06
This is a gem of a book. It covers alot of material (maybe too much) and yet it is a relatively small book. I liked the book for its comprehensive coverage and links to entrepreneurship as a personal mission... as well as marketing.
The authors are Canadian and I'd like to say that their nationality interfered with the topics or slant of the book... but it didn't. In fact, I was pleasantly surprised that this Swiss-banking immigrant (Bender) and this successful radio broadcaster (Torok) in Canada really had their feet on the ground. They offered lots of practical marketing and strategic advice.
I would suggest that there are two major parts to this book. The first 1/6 of the book describes their concept of delivering value, tieing your products/services to personal values, and your vision/mission statements, etc. I thought this was truly great and apparently some of it flows from Peter Urs Bender's other book: Leadership from Within. I see that it is favorably reviewed here at Amazon and I will order it right away (forthwith in Canadian?).
The remaining 5/6's of the book is an encyclopedic account of marketing techniques that you can (and should) apply for your business. The target market for this book is a firm of 1 to 30 employees... a small firm. This book would also do well for an individual working for a big company, as it tells you how to market yourself to become more valuable.
There's a ton of good ideas here. You won't go wanting of things to implement. There are new ideas that you won't see elsewhere.
For example, they speak about the need to write articles to establish your expertise. They then go on to list many different kinds of articles you can write. Under this section, one sub-topic was Tips Sheets. There they listed about 10 different kinds of tip sheets you could write. I knew about writing articles and tip sheets, but they provided excellent lead ideas to get me going. There were many other such new things in their book that greatly extended the topics I was already familiar with.
Because it was encyclopedic in coverage, I was worried that it would repeat alot of what I already knew. But, instead I learned a lot of new ideas that I can implement. Overall, I highly recommend this book for any small business owner, or marketing chief... or any individual who wants to shine and promote himself within a corporation.
Now if we could just figure out some way to get these good business thinkers out of the cold socialist northern territories! I found the book in a Vancouver bookstore and have never seen it in the U.S.

From A to Z - A Comprehensive Look at Branding YOU.......2001-03-25
This book is an excellent one-stop source for developing your own unique "brand." It covers the obvious and not-so-obvious things to consider as you differentiate yourself in the marketplace.
As a consultant for the past ten years, I found this book to be a wonderful affirmation for the things that I am doing well and a gentle nudge to consider/do specific actions in promoting my business. I read this book right before I began a comprehensive review of our marketing strategies and the timing was absolutely perfect. Just one tip proves itself WELL worth the cost of the book as well as the time invested to read it.
Secrets of Power Marketing.......2000-10-05
The unique marketing ideas and concepts shared in this book are real winners! I can't wait to put many of these great ideas into action.

- What can I say...it works!
- This book is fine IF...

I'm not sure if it is current.......2007-01-18
The author claims that if you start the bid at $.99 with no reserve, that no matter what the item is, that you'll get more for it than you thought you'd get for it.
i don't know if that's true. I've seen many auctions on eBay where the seller got ripped off because only one person bid on an item, and the bid was for $.99.
While years ago the author sold his Viper using the suggestions in his book and made a profit on it, I don't think that in today's market that would happen. Even with his suggestions, things don't work that way anymore, at least from what I've seen happening.
It isn't a bad ebook. The suggestions are pretty good if you're auctioning stuff that isn't expensive and you could afford to lose money on. However, if it is something that really is valuable, you shouldn't necessarily count on selling it for what it is worth if you follow his suggestions.
What can I say...it works!.......2006-12-01
The copyright on this may be 2004, but if you are just getting started selling on eBay this little gem is invaluable. I followed the advice, and with literally thousands of other products comparable to mine, I was one of the few who actually received bids and sold my items. I attribute everything to the sound principles in this ebook.
It's fun to read, packed with good tips, and worth the price just for the sample email letters included! I encountered a "Troll" with my first auction, but thanks to this ebook I knew exactly what was happening and what to do.
There may be other books that provide all the technical aspects, but this is the FIRST one you should read if you're a newbie.
This book is fine IF..........2006-04-29
...you're looking for good advice for selling a few items on eBay. It has very good advice for maximizing your bids, writing your ad, etc. However, if you're looking for something to guide you in starting an ongoing eBay business at a high level, this is not the choice to make. In addition, if you are already using eBay to run your "virtual garage sales", you're not going to find much here that you don't already know. So I suppose my 1 star rating is based as much on my expectations and goals as it is the book itself.
Suprisingly informative.......2006-04-24
I've just finished this ebook and I am quite pleased. I've read a few books of this sort and they are usually just useless fluff, and none really answer the question of what to sell on ebay. This book does do that, and gives pros and cons of different ways to purchase products.
There are a few issues with the book. Its a bit out of date, it was publised in 2004, so some of the information is no longer valid. Also the author doesnt seem to be above slightly shady practices, like misrepresentation(which someone else explained in a previous post), or padding shipping(which everyone clearly does, but still its a bit shady).
I was able to get this from my library's electronic resources, but I would recommend buying it if you cant do that. Its targeted to fairly new ebayers who have sold a few items and have a feedback of atleast 5 but preferably 10, and are looking to start at least a part-time business.
Outdated and dangerous to your bottom line........2005-12-11
This ebook describes the eBay of yesteryear. Today, when it comes to pricing your items, this ebook's mandate to start every auction at $.99 or less is a prescription for disaster. It's a buyers market on eBay and unless you know the demand for your item you may well be giving it away. That might be fine if you're just clearing out the closet but not if your buying merchandise to resell.
There's some good basic info in here but nothing you couldn't find at eBay and its many forums for free.
If your going to buy and resell product on eBay skip this book and read "eBay Strategies : 10 Proven Methods to Maximize Your eBay Business" buy Scott Wingo. It explains what sells and what doesn't sell well on eBay.
