The BEST Introduction to Marketing Textbook.......2000-05-15
I have used Pride & Ferrel in an Intro to Mkt undergrad classes for numerous years at one of the universities where I teach. It is by far the best and user-friendly text for both student and professor. You will come away with a very good basis of basic marketing concepts. Great Examples & on-line updates are also available.
A Great Learning Tool!.......2000-04-06
This textbook is probably the best Marketing book I have read. The information is current (it is the 2000 edition), language is easy to understand and the photographs are wonderful. The book not only explained the subject of marketing, but also gave clear examples of all of the topics using products and companies that we as consumers encounter everday. The loose leaf format made the book less expensive than most of my other college books. I highly recommend that universities review this textbook and use it in their classroom. Not only is this book full of information, but the unlike a lot of textbooks it is enjoyable to read.

A friend of salespeople and customer service representatives everywhere, ACT! 2000 does a great job of managing lots of names and their associated bits of contact information. ACT! 2000 for Windows for Dummies realizes that most people don't want to spend their days running ACT!--they just want to know that Ruth Ann Krinklemeyer needs a follow-up call (at this number right here) on the 23rd. Because of this, the book jumps right to the simplest ways of getting contact information into an ACT! database and then getting it back out on demand. Later chapters deal with advanced database queries and Internet integration, but author Jeffrey J. Mayer has organized the first part of this book with the knowledge that most readers will spend a lot of time there.
ACT! 2000 for Windows for Dummies employs the vintage Dummies writing and organizational style, complete with explicit how-to procedures and more than a few dopey jokes. You probably know from other books whether you like the approach. Generally, it works well as straight documentation of the program's features (especially the relatively basic ones) and holds up reasonably well when you want to do something that falls outside the realm of the normal. This book gives you the grounding you need to get practically all ACT! 2000 jobs done. Ms. Krinklemeyer will get her call. --David Wall
Topics covered: Entering contacts; extracting information; defining custom fields; using list views; performing advanced queries; using the calendar and task list features; and using ACT! as an e-mail, fax, and letter-writing platform.
Book Description
For years, we’ve all been keeping track of our activities by using some version of a to-do list. Some people write down all of their tasks on pads of paper and update the list every few days; others use daily planning books; and still others write everything on self-stick notes and paste them to the desktop, wall, and computer monitor.
With ACT!, you don’t make lists. You schedule a specific task and include the task’s date, time, and regarding information, and then you assign the task to a specific person. Then you use ACT! to help you to keep track of all your unfinished tasks. With Act! 2000 For Windows For Dummies in hand, you'll discover how to put the power of Act! to work for you and your business.
This book is filled with information that will help you to use ACT! 2000’s many timesaving and productivity-improving features so that you can grow your business, expand your career, save time, and make more money. Whether you're an experienced Act! user or someone who is new to the software, this information-packed reference tool will guide you through the following topics and more:
- Turning Act! into your electronic phone book
- Creating a new database
- Looking at Act! fields, commands, shortcuts keys, tool bars
- Understanding various tabs: Notes/History, Activities, Sales/Opportunities, and Group
- Entering information into a database
- Scheduling activities; using calendars
- Writing letters; including printing, faxing, and e-mailing
- Working with reports and layouts
- Managing and protecting your Act! database
Act! is a very powerful tool, on par with a top-of-the-line database or spreadsheet program. With help from Act! 2000 For Windows For Dummies, you'll be able to fine-tune Act! features to match your specific needs and use this tool to its fullest potential.
Customer Reviews:
ACT! 2000 a must for every user........2001-12-10
ACT! 2000 the software is an excellent product and I use it 2 or three times a day. ACT! 2000 for Dummies is extremely helpful and very entertaining. I learned alot from ACT! for Dummies. The first version of ACT! for Dummies was well written and ACT! 2000 for Dummies is even better. I bought it three or four years ago when I upgraded my software to ACT! 2000 and I still keep it handy and refer to it for all my ACT questions and how too's. I have also told everyone who uses ACT! 2000 to buy their own copy and keep it close by. TG
ACT! 2000 For Windows For Dummies vs. Act! 2000 User's Guide.......2000-12-15
I found this manual no more helpful than the User's Guide provided with ACT! 2000. In my opinion, this "Dummies" book is written on the same level as the User's Guide, and really does not speak to the "dummy" or new user any more clearly or understandably than the ACT! 2000 User's Guide does. In fact, I found Mr. Mayer's book confusing at times and would turn to the User's Guide for clarification. I wish I had read some of the Amazon reviews before purchasing Mr. Mayer's book. Had I known what I know now, I would not have purchased ACT! 2000 For Windows For Dummies but would have saved myself time, study, and money by simply using the ACT! 2000 User's Guide.
Good for beginners.......2000-05-16
This book covers a large amount of information very quickly. As a more advanced user of ACT!, I found most of the topics too superficial. However, my users frequently find the book very helpful in assisting them with basic tasks in ACT!. I found the constant references to the author's classes and other books somewhat annoying after the first several.
An abberation in the Dummies series.......2000-05-11
I have great affection for the unfortunately-titled Dummies series. Typically they combine a very digestible series of easily read lessons, which teach rather more than the title suggests. And if I find the writing style cloying, with the mandatory joke per page, I at least give them credit for trying to ease the worried reader's misgivings.
ACT is notorious in clerical office worker circles as being a daunting bear to learn really well. The instruction manuals make one think that one could spend the same amount of time learning C++ or rocket science. Typically that's when someone like me turns to a Dummies book.
I cannot fault the book for the very complete information it provides. It does it as well, or better, than any other complete manual I've seen. What disappoints is the fact that the information here makes the subject no less daunting than any of the other complete manuals.
It becomes almost sad when the reader realizes by the middle of the second chapter, that the writer is uniquely colorless and lacking any inate sense of humor -- and his attempts at it strike one as pathetic. The easy digestibility one expects from a Dummies book is completely absent. I still felt like I'd make a better living if I spent the time learning rocket science. The Dummies books on Excel, or A+ Certification -- not lightweight subjects -- make ACT appear like the height of esoteric knowledge by comparison.
This is a very fine manual, and I learned alot from it. ...
ACT!2000 Training.......2000-05-08
ACT!2000 for Windows for Dummies was the basis of lesson plans I developed for beginning, intermediate, and advanced ACT!2000 classes. Jeff has a knack for uncomplicating a feature-rich piece of software. He literally hand carries users through the program and enables them to take advantage of the best Personal Information Manager on the market.
(Phil Ardussi is a consultant in NT4.0 installations and has been an enthusiastic ACT! user for over five years.)
Book Description
Temperance advocates believed they could eradicate alcohol by persuading consumers to avoid it; prohibitionists put their faith in legislation forbidding its manufacture, transportation, and sale. After the repeal of the Eighteenth Amendment, however, reformers sought a new method--targeting advertising.
In Advertising Sin and Sickness, Pamela E. Pennock documents three distinct periods in the history of the national debate over the regulation of alcohol and tobacco marketing. Tracing the fate of proposed federal policies, she introduces their advocates and opponents, from politicians and religious leaders to scientists and businessmen. In the 1950s, the Woman's Christian Temperance Union and other religious organizations joined hands in an effort to ban all alcohol advertising. They quickly found themselves at odds, however, with an increasingly urbane mainstream American culture. In the 1960s, moralists took backstage to consumer activists and scientific authorities in the campaign to control cigarette advertising and mandate labeling. Secular and scientific arguments came to dominate policy debates, and the controversy over alcohol marketing during the 1970s and 1980s highlighted the issues of substance abuse, public health, and consumer rights.
The politics of alcohol and tobacco advertising, Pennock concludes, reflect profound cultural ambivalence about consumerism and private enterprise, morality and health, scientific authority and the legitimate regulation of commercial speech. Today, the United States continues to face difficult questions about the proper role of the federal government when powerful industries market potentially harmful but undeniably popular products.

Book Description
ACT! 2000 Fast & Easy provides you with an easy, visual way to learn this popular contact management program. Step-by-step, screen-by-screen, this book provides precise guidance new users need. It also introduces experienced users to the new features of this new version.
Customer Reviews:
Very, very shallow........2000-06-16
I was really disappointed with this book. I've never used Act before, and thought this would be a great book to start with. I read the whole book cover to cover in about 2 hours! 90% of the pages are full of screen shots. It glossed over synchronization, and also use with a Palm Pilot or CE device. If you are purely a user that wants to make ACT work at the most basic of levels, I guess this book would be OK. I went to a Brick & Mortar bookstore and looked at the other Act books. Special Edition Using Act 2000 looks *much* better. I've bought tons of stuff at Amazon and never returned a thing, but I think I'll return this book and buy Special Edition.
Fast & Easy It Is But Doesn't Go Into Explainations.......2000-06-08
If this is your first time with ACT! the book is good. It gives a screen by screen description of what keys to push. But if you have any problems, this book will not help. For instance, if you are importing a database into ACT! and don't know if it is a .txt or .dbf file you're up a creek.
Excellent for new users.......2000-04-25
This softback is excellent for new users. Well laid out and easy to follow.
The only reservation I have is that if you already know a little about ACT you may find it too simple.
None the less it is an excellent book for new users.
Fast & Easy is 100% True.......2000-04-23
This book will take you from knowing nothing to being able to get around in the program with little effort. Each step has a graphic that goes with it. So you really can't go wrong. I worked with this book for a short time and now I am teaching the program to others. You can't miss
Highly Visual and focused on areas of greatest need.......1999-10-09
Flip quickly through the book and you will see one of its strengths -- screen shots on every page illustrating every step described. Yet it isn't one of those ten minute quick and easy guides with pictures; these screen shots are illustrating how to use the program effectively.
The selling point for me: The instructions on customizing the forms comes right at the beginning of the book! So it helps you set up ACT for your own needs right from the start. Other books hold this information until right at the end, treating it as an option rather than the essential task it is.

Book Description
In the business of professional league sports, market conditions are the key determinate of the financial success or failure of a team. In the last few years, major league sports has experienced both growth into new markets and relocations of existing teams. Owners and the leagues use demographics, economic data, and governmental support to decide on where and when to expand and relocate. This book examines the sports business from 1950 through 2000. Historical demographic, economic, and team-related data provide the context. The authors apply metropolitan area statistics such as population growth and income, game attendance, and estimated market values to examine the business decisions made by individual teams in professional baseball, football, and basketball. The book looks at specific teams in terms of their long-term viability as a franchise and ranks their performances in economic and business terms. It also examines the related issues of taxpayer subsidies for new venues and the economic impact of professional sports on cities and regions. The book is a fascinating and comprehensive look at the business of sports and its place in American society, business, and economics.
Customer Reviews:
Professional Sports As A Business.......1999-12-07
Frank P. Jozsa, Jr. and John J. Guthrie, Jr. have written one of the most relevant books of its kind. "Relocating Teams and Expanding Leagues in Professional Sports", covers the subject of professional sports and how those sports react to market conditions in today's era of big money and demanding fans. From the relocation of the Brooklyn Dodgers all the way to the expansion Cleveland Browns this book is a must read for anyone involved in the decision making process which may involve the future of a professional sports franchise. People who will benefit from this book includes, but is not limited to, management in the front office of a professional sports franchise, state and local government officials who may be asked to subsidize a franchise or stadium/arena, fans who want to take their knowlege of professional sports to another level, and sports writers who want to be the most knowlegeable in their competitive field of sports reporting. After reading this book all will be able to answer the questions, Why did the Baltimore Colts really move to Indianapolis (in the middle of the night)? Why did the Boston Braves move to Milwaukee and then to Atlanta? How many NBA teams moved between 1952 and 1973? And most importantly, which sports teams are the most likely to move in the next few years and why? Are tax funded stadiums and arenas a good investment for the taxpayer directly and indirectly? Instead of guessing or taking an emotional stab at these questions you will KNOW the answers. As in any business, you can predict the future to some degree by understanding the forces which come into play by knowing what happened in the past. If you desire to truly understand how professional sports work, then this book is a must read for you. Don't let your competition be the only ones with all the answers. If you like professional sports then this book is a a truly enjoyable read.

The first part of the book focuses on the global and regional elements of the economic system and recent geo-politics. * Charts the successful dynamic relationships between geopolitical, economic, and social resources
* Relevant to sociological and economic studies

I am interested in starting a direct marketing business and thought the title of this book was just what I needed. Besides, it is written by a full collection of professionals. But once you start reading it, you realize these guys missed the internet boat. There are a few interisting points, here and there, but you could get them in almost any direct marketing book.

Customer Reviews:
Not helpful for most MBAs.......2002-11-25
This book is designed for: those thinking of going into product management, and MBAs from top 20 schools.
While the interviews were insightful, they were almost all from MBAs in product management positions. Thus, the title is midleading, as it does not cover all the "Careers in Marketing" (hardly). The VGM Series book "Careers in Marketing" by Lila Stair, while it has its limitations too, would be a better resource.
Also, the interviews and company list (which took up most of the book) is most helpful only if you are coming from a top school. There are many potential companies not on the list, and few will happen to be in your geographic area. The people who were interviewed are in postions on high end of the scale in terms of stress and responsibility, which is certainly not going to be the target for everyone just completing their MBA.
I have found most of HBS Career Guides available at the local library. Unless you fit the narrow reader target, I would check this book out at the library rather than purchase it.
poor, poor.......2001-09-19
This book is embarrassing. In my opinion the Vault Career Guide to Marketing and Brand Management is a superior guide to careers in marketing. Good luck.
Great Guide for MBAs.......2000-08-17
As an recent MBA grad, I found this book to be extremely helpful. The company descriptions and Harvard grad profiles are great, but the resource pages alone, make this book worth the price. This career guide is a great first step for those considering a career in marketing!
This book is a joke.......2000-07-22
I don't think this book is worth buying. Its 83 pages contain some general information about careers in marketing, a few stories from Harvard alumni and 21 company profiles (that's what I bought the book for - I didn't know there are only 21).
Beside the fact that they are only a few, the company profiles contain in general obvious and useless data which you would have no trouble finding on the corporations' web sites or in some magazines. Even worse, all the information was collected from internal sources. You can find some pretty detailed MBA job descriptions, but I doubt they are of much help - of course, the companies expect you to do about everything that has to be done in marketing.
The only useful part of the book are the last 4-6 pages which contain some marketing career resources (books, directories, associations, web sites).
If you are interested in this subject go for the vault.com and wetfeet.com guides.
