A Collision of Cultures.......2006-11-15

In I am Regina, Sally M. Keehn tells the story of a ten-year-old girl who is taken captive by Native Americans after they brutally kill her brother and father. In their village, Regina is given a new name, Tskinnak, and slowly adapts her new way of life. This young adult novel is well-crafted in terms of structure; it has a sound arc of conflict sustained by a strong narrator and cast of fascinating supporting characters that all possess individual goals and desires. Keehn masterfully juxtaposes Native American culture and the ways of the "white man" through the eyes of Regina/Tskinnak, her innocent narrator. As time progresses in the book, so does Regina/Tskinnak's understanding and acceptance of Native American culture. Though this transformation occurs slowly, the soul of her very being is forever altered. She is able to see the war amongst white men and Native Americans from both sides, and finds herself questioning where she truly belongs, a question that resonates in the minds of children and young adults of today. The only inconsistency in the book occurs during shifts in time. Keehn shifts in "moons" and at times it is confusing to judge how much or how little time has passed since the last scene. Keehn began the story using short choppy sentences, but as the book progresses, it outgrows this simplistic structure and evolves into a well-written text. I am Regina is a powerful and moving story that will captivate readers right down to the final sentence.

I Am Regina is one of the best books I ever read. It's good, because you can learn about a good time in history, and its a true story, all in one exciting book! I didn't think it was boring, I thought it was interesting to learn about facts! It's a great book for pre-teenagers!

This book is great you'll love it. First she and her sister gets caputered by indins when her mom and younger brother went to the mill and her dad and older brother got killed by the indins. Regina is sad first she wanted the white men to come and save her but they didn't entill every one of the indins were gone. Which was most of her family because she gave up hope. She was at this camp with the white men and all mom's and dad's are tring to find there dauters and sons from the war. Regina was so nice and tried to never give up like i am.

An exciting book that's hard to put down.......2006-06-05

This book gives an accurate portrayal of what it was like back in the 1700's ~ and what it was like to move into the Indian's territory.

I am Regina is a true story (historically), making it that much more exciting to read. It is also one of the best books I've read lately. Ms. Keehn keeps the mystery and excitement going from beginning to end. I am also sure she did much research to find out what the Indians ate, how they prepared their food and how they forraged for food during the winter.

I would recommend this book to anyone who likes true stories, anyone who is interested in history, and anyone who likes a book you cannot put down.

Don't want to spoil the story for you ~ read it for yourself and see what happened to this darling child - as well as so many others.

This book makes me want to go to Pennsylvania and visit Regina's gravesite.

Rould you believe that two indians would crash your cabin door open, holding rifles at that, intending to kill you and your family. Well this is exactly what happened to a girl named Regina in a historical fiction novel called I am Regina.

The main charactors are Regina, Sarah, Tiger Claw, and Woelfin. This book took place back in 1755, when the French and Indian War was starting in Pennsylvania.

In the colonial times of Pennsylvania, on a small farm in the cornffield, the Leininger family were held victom by two indians. While the mother and the youngest brother were at the mill on the hill, the father and brother were murdered and scalped and the two daughters held captive to go to their tribe. while going there the two indians that met up with other indians split up at a fork, seperating the two sisters. the younger sister, Regina, and her companion, Sarah, were now held captive by the indian known as Tiger Claw to his tribe. when she reached the tribe, Regina and Sarah were adopted by none other than Tiger Claws mother, Woelfin. Will she ever see her mother and brother again, will she be able to even survive. you must read the book to find out.

this book was one othe the best books my group ever read so far, there's so much action, lost lives, war, and other great things. My personal favorite part was when Regina's sister tries to run away from the indians, on a stallion at that, I thought that showed great courage unlike her sister at the begining of the book but she does get braver. this book is great for people who like action and sorrow because in the book, the French and Indian War was going on so there was a lot of fighting and bloodshed. the author, I think, was trying to tell us to not judge people for their appearence but get to know them because in the ook when Woelfin gets to know Regina, she starts showing her good side. hope you all like this reiew and bye.

During the second half of the 1950s, folks derisively referred to the Kansas City A’s as a “farm team” of the New York Yankees. Trades between the two—often lopsided—were commonplace, and it seemed every time the Yankees needed that one final piece for yet another pennant run, the A’s filled the gap.

Paging an Editor!.......2007-10-12

"The Wrong Half of the Yankees" is about the bizarre relationship between the New York Yankees and Kansas City Athletics in the years 1955-1960. The principal characters are A's owner Arnold Johnson and Yankees co-owners Del Webb and Dan Topping. The 3 had deep interests in the Automatic Canteen Company and Topping/Webb sold Yankee Stadium to Johnson. The Yanks main farm team was in KC. Del and Dan just happened to include in the Stadium deal the sale of the Kansas City ballpark to Johnson as well! Moreover, Del and Dan then strong-armed the American League to rubber stamp Johnson's purchase of the moribund Philadelphia A's and to approve the franchise shift from Philly to KC. This, despite the fact that higher offers were on the table, with at least one from interests that might have kept the A's in Philly. Once Johnson was safely ensconced in KC, the teams engaged in some 20 trades, nearly all favoring the Yankees. The fodder for a fine baseball story is all here but author Katz takes far too pages to tell it. Included in the text are a history of the Philly franchise and infighting twixt various members of the Mack family, who had controlled the A's for decades. The result is an almost deadening load of information which might have been fascinating had it only been served in smaller portions. WHY is one of those works which cry out for that proverbial stern editor with a sharp blue pencil to trim down the text. Not until Chapter 11 does Katz cover the good stuff: those trades. These encompass the period when this reviewer was just a kid- and a Yankee fan. Even a boy could smell a rat at some of these transactions. Most may cavil at the lopsided deal for Roger Maris but this observer recalls the round trip trades for pitcher Ralph Terry. A young RT plainly needed seasoning and wasn't going to get it in the Bronx bull pen, so he was farmed to the A's in 1957 (the Billy Martin trade). In 1959, the by then seasoned Terry was back in pinstripes! Even a 12 year old Yankees fan smelled something fishy. A nice inclusion is the images of 78 trading cards for many players. Included are 4 of Harry "Suitcase" Simpson and the '57 card of pitcher Art Ditmar listed as a Yankee -but plainly in an A's uniform! The back of that card actually acknowledged the misprint! A question for the author: Are you certain Johnny Kucks hometown was Hoboken? The little kid in this reviewer remembers JK hailing from Jersey City. The bottom line: Insufficient space is given to the trades, far too much to kvetching about franchise shifts, stadium deals and Mack family squabbling. One suspects that some of the text qualifies as mere filler. A scaled down WHY would be excellent as a feature article in a magazine. As a full length, 200 page book it falls short.

Kansas City Cowtown Fans: Always the Patsies.......2007-08-25

Kansas City is certainly not up to date. The city's citizens are constantly being made the patsies in any deal, whether it involves the organized crime of the Pendergast era, the attempt to stop light rail in the city or the building of its baseball/football complex out in Independence. Author Jeff Katz shines a bright light on baseball's cold-war era, focussing on the horrific collusion scandal of the 1950s, whereby the hated New York Yankees swiped all of KC's good baseball players under a secrecy that rivals today's steroid cover-up.

Of course, the citizens of KC always knew what was going on but couldn't stop it. Organized crime flourished and KC was appalled. Did they do anything about it? No, not for years.

The citizens knew a ball park belonged in KC's downtown, but they couldn't stop the building of two stadiums in Independence. Now, KC is in deep doo-doo trying to revive its downtown, after once again refusing the chance to move the stadiums there and with the "great" Sprint Center for basketball and hockey way behind schedule.

Katz, in his poorly-titled book, uses mostly contemporary 1950s newspaper articles to build his case against the Yankees during a time when they were using the Kansas City A's as a "minor-league" outlet for fire-sale bargains. Maris, Lopez, Maas, Trucks, Dickson and many more good KC players became Yankees because the Yankees controlled the KC team and Commissioner Ford Frick and even the United States Congress allowed it to go on illegally for years. And the KC fans? They let it happen too, just as they might let a great light rail plan be emasculated by the city's so-called power brokers here in 2007.

I feel very sad for Kansas City fans. They get dumped on so easily, but they always seem to smile and forget. Maybe that's what makes this city so easy to fool. Maybe being the perfect patsy makes KC great in some, warped, crazy-little-woman way.

Not Just for Yankee Haters.......2007-08-13

I found this to be a fascinating read. Jeff Katz's book is an insightful and entertaining look at the Yankee's way of doing business. It shows in great detail how the Yankees carefuly planned out and, eventually, controlled the KC A's. It will have every fan of perennial losers scouring ownership groups and hitorical trades looking for unseemly connections. Although this book will be sought by primarily hardcore baseball fans it can be enjoyed by all.

The seminal book about the Golden Age of Baseball in New York. A must have for any baseball fan. The photograph selection by Claus Guglberger is sublime. I eagerly anticipate another release containing the photographs selected by this gifted photographer.

The Photographs Make The Book.......2004-07-09

There have been numerous books written on New York baseball, but, at least for me, it is the photographs that make this a unique baseball book. I have vivid memories of the World Series of the 1950's, and all except 1959 involved at least one of the teams in New York City. The New York Yankees and Brooklyn Dodgers series were classics, and will always be remembered. I enjoyed the descriptive writing of New York Daily News writer Dick Young. When Duke Snider made a wide turn at 3rd base in coming home, Young wrote, "Duke, who is a poor base-runner for a man of his superior speed, took the scenic route home...He was out by some 20 feet." Many of the photos brought back the names of players and umpires of my youth. The photographs illustrate how small the dugouts were in that era. Fans are predominantly dressed in suit coats, ties, and fedoras. Also of interest are photos of fans leaving the park via the playing field, and photographers near home plate photographing the action. Photographs of Ebbets Field and the Polo Grounds show views from above the playing field in addition to close ups of the center field area of the Polo Grounds and the center and right field areas of Ebbets Field with the advertising on the wall are also of interest. I am a fan of the Detroit Tigers, but I will always have precious memories of those historic New York teams in addition to the arenas they played in. The text is nice, but it is the photos that make this book unique.

Brings back a great era in Baseball!.......2004-05-25

You don't just have to be a fan of New York baseball to enjoy this wonderful photo-filled book showcasing the great Big Apple teams of the late 1940's to the late 1950's. This wonderful book containing superb photographs from the baseball archives of the New York Daily News, is like a mirror through time. The large photos, (dont you just hate small photos in large books), showcase the players, (stars or not), stadiums, but above all action surrounding the great New York teams of 1947-1957 with a small but no less interesting text explaining each one. The most enjoyable thing about the book for me were the full-page sized photos showing all the action in ballparks, some unfortunately no longer with us (Ebberts Field and the Polo Grounds) and the pre-renovated Yankee Stadium. The nuances of these parks with their crazy outfield angles and advertising boards gives us an appreciation of what it was like to play or watch baseball in them back then. The shots of the fans who populated these parks also tells a story, of rabid fan allegience and spirited optimism. Any baseball fan will love this book as part of their collection. There is a brief text opening the selection of photos for each year that may be short but this book let's the photos do the describing. A fabulous book!

A Kaleidoscopic Glimpse at NYC in the Summer of '77.......2007-10-01

I had heard a lot of good buzz about this book since it was published a few years ago. When I found out ESPN was making a mini-series out of it, I decided to take the plunge and buy it. I actually didn't end up watching the mini-series, but I loved the book.
One of the things that initially kept me away was the much-hyped baseball angle. Like any red-blooded American baseball fan that doesn't hale from the Tri-State area, I am life-long Yankee hater, and those George Steinbrenner/Billy Martin teams of the late `70s gave me plenty to hate. The last thing on earth I wanted to read was some hagiographic account of the Bronx Bombers winning the 1977 World Series.
I needn't have worried. The Evil Empire's tumultuous season is just one of several neatly interwoven story lines: New York's fiscal crisis, the city's nasty '77 mayoral election, Rupert Murdoch's purchase of the moribund New York Post. Several other subplots add spice: the blackout riots, Son of Sam, the burgeoning disco scene. New York was a busy place that summer.
There's nothing too profound here, just a snapshot of our greatest city at one of the lowest points in its history. Well paced and enjoyable, the book got me through several long airplane trips.

It didnt focus on the yankees as much as i thought it would, and when it did, most of it was about Reggie. All the events of that summer were interesting and I remembered a lot of it happening too which was cool.

Great slice of history into 1977............2007-08-23

I was impressed with the amount of factual research Jonathan Mahler put into this wonder readaptation into the year 1977 in NY City. He takes a book and illustrates a wonderful slice of history into multiple aspects. There are several issues that keep the reader interested in the book. I particularly like books that have multiple plots and subplots. Mahler was able to keep each chapter full of intrique with a look into human experience and emotions of the key characters in this one year of magic. The final chapter he puts out: "The Bronx is burning, ladies and gentlemen, as we watch the 1977 World Series".......

This is an excellent account of New York City and its troubles both on the baseball field and in the political arena. I highly recommend this for anyone who is interested in the NYY ball club and the politics of New York City, particularly in the late 1970's.

The dingy decay and inner strength of 1970s New York in a good read.......2007-08-11

It's hard to believe the author of this book was a little kid when he first visited New York in the 1970s. I first moved to NYC as a young adult during this decade, and found this book reverberating with the discouraging urine-stained decay that was ubiquitous then -- graffitied subways, homeless bums, massage parlours, garbage strikes, crime, loan defaults...

And yet... beneath all this, there must have been some kind of resolve and determination... or perhaps simply infrastructure... that allowed Manhattan, at least, to ultimately avoid the suburban flight afflicting the rest of the nation's inner cities. New York is still New York, but those dark abandoned streets of 1970s Manhattan today sport boutiques and spanking-clean SUVs from one end nearly to the other (of course, the outer boroughs have not been so lucky). While this has also resulted in a loss of character and the sad conversion of Manhattan's old ethnic neighborhoods, it is also testimony to the endurance of urban culture, of some kind, in at least one American city.

Enough social commentary and onto the book! At first it seems that much of the plot may concern the dynamics of Reggie Jackson & Billy Martin and the Yankees; also figuring large are the 1977 blackout and the mayoral race. It would have been easy, and appealing, to showboat the charged conflict among Reggie, Martin, and Steinbrenner; but the author never succumbs to this temptation. Instead he seamlessly weaves the story of 1977 New York in the context of the cultural, political, and financial background of the times. Even Studio 54, punk rock, The Mercer Arts Centre, and Soho are given lip service.

What makes it all so good is the natural trajectory that makes for an entertaining read -- it is hard to put down, like a good mystery; it tells a story. This is great non-fiction: historic, accurate, nuanced, and atmospheric -- and as entertaining as any fictional narrative could be.

Take responsibility for riding.......2006-08-28

Excellent book for any rider who rides to commute or just rides to live. Blends the learnings of "Effective Cycling :6th edition"
and other inner city riding techniques. Provides a non-biased view of riding in the city and it's surrounds and urges all riders to take responsibity for their actions on the road.

Practical and Sensible.......2006-07-28

The inclusion of the word "art" in the title of this book made me fear that this book would be laying out a pretentious philosophy of cycling as a form of pseudo-mysticism, a bicycle version of "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance." Gratefully, these fears were unfounded, and what we have instead is a very sober and practical account of the pleasures, risks, and techniques of cycling in an urban environment.

Opening with a brief history of cycling in America, and a discussion of the emergence of the automobile and its effects on urban design, the book moves on to describe and analyze the various kinds of hazards the urban cyclist will face, and how best to deal with them. In doing this, the author avoids the strident sermonizing often characteristic of those who promote "alternative" and "earth-friendly" forms of recreation.

Above all, the author emphasizes the importance of constant vigilance as the best way to avoid accident and injury. And, without getting too mystical about it, he points out that this heightened awareness or vigilance in avoiding trouble is - paradoxically - one of the main pleasures of cycling. Cycling, for Hurst, is very much a thinking man's (or woman's) game.

The author also discusses cycling clothing, helmets (pro-and-con), and pros-and-cons regarding different types of bicycles (he favors traditional narrow-wheeled road bikes over mountain bikes and their offshoots). In all of this he is non-dogmatic, seeing both sides of every issue.

Good is this book is, I gave it four stars instead of five because the author is not a particularly memorable stylist, and I think he could have gone into more detail about the clothing and equipment alternatives. These quibbles aside, I can recommend the book without reservation.

The best "how to" cycling book out there. I've bought several copies for myself, strategically placed to rarely be far from one. Having ridden in cities for over 40 years, I still found every page, infact almost every paragraph contained a pearl. Pros and cons of controvertial issues are presented, and with excellent references, making the author's recommendations so much more authoritative.
Two of many examples: The helmet controversy is addressed, including most the anti-helmet arguments, yet concludes: "Wear a helmet, but don't let it get to your head", which encompasses the notion of 'risk compensation' without directly mentioning it (which would have opened up a real Pandora's box).
Mirrors are credited with negating some of the need to look back, but yet Hurst tellingly mentions "Turning back can have almost the same effect as a turn signal".
There are literally hundreds of similar insights to safe riding.
Safety is the first priority throughout the book, yet it's much too inspiring and humourous to be treated as an instruction manual.
Recommended without any reservation!

Ten years on and I still think this is the best when it comes to running nutrition and diets. The energy bars beat any Powerbar in my book, and the energy drinks and simple and useful. I use it from time to time to re-evaluate my diet based on how much I'm running. Love to see it updated!

Easy cooking for busy people!.......1999-10-03

Nancy Clark has become one of my favorite nutrition authors. This book is easy to read with basic nutrition advice in the first section. The second section consists of nutrition enhancing, simple to follow recipes that do not require much time or fancy ingredients. I tried many different banana bread recipes from different cookbooks and found the one in this book not only the easiest, but also the best tasting. When I can't decide what to eat I pull out this book and always find some inspiration.

A True Sox Fan's Book.......2007-02-02

"Sox and the City" is a great read for any baseball lover, but particularly White Sox fans. They say that as a baseball fan you are wedded to one team for life, and live and die with them each season. Or to paraphrase one of those east coast baseball fans, baseball is not life or death, but the [White] Sox are!

"Sox and the City" will most interest Chicagosns, of course. But all baseball fans might enjoy it. After all, being a White Sox fan in a city with more than one team, and an ancient generational rivalry (I won't name that OTHER team) is an experience few living baseball fans still know. the annual highs and lows (and finally triumph) that made the suffering all worth it. Only perhaps New Yorkers share the experience (and even the New York Mets are stand-ins for the old Yankees-Dodgers-Giants rivalry).

If you love baseball, pick this one up!

Great look at White Sox baseball.......2007-01-07

Give movie critic Richard Roeper "Two Thumbs Up" for this upbeat look at rooting for the White Sox in a city where the more-popular Cubs have the advantage. Roeper describes his lifelong attachment to the Sox, recalling past baseball games, seasons, players, etc. He shows that the underdog White Sox typically draw smaller crowds and less media to their plainer arena on the city's non-glamorous South Side - add losing seasons to that mix and you can see why the Sox nearly moved to Milwaukee (1968), Seattle (1975), Denver (1980) and Florida (1988). Ironically, these hardships and the fortitude of Sox fans to endure them are rarely mentioned by a national media that fixates on the big-money Cubs and other glamour teams. Roeper concludes by describing part of the magical 2005 season, when the White Sox finally broke through and won the World Series - their first title in 88 years! That triumph cheered Chicago's long-suffering fans and attracted much-desired national attention.

This lively and often humorous narrative could have been longer than 197 fast-reading pages. I felt the author underestimated how many people in Chicago root hard for both teams, but this is still an entertaining read for baseball fans here and across the nation.

Entertaining Book, Even if You are not a Sox Fan.......2007-01-03

Richard Roeper gives an entertaining overview of his love for the Chicago White Sox while adding interesting anecdotes about life in Chicago and in general.

As a fellow White Sox fan, I found this book to be right on the money in explaining why Chicago became a Cubs town even when the Sox had a better team (poor judgement by Sox management and changing neighborhoods).

Roeper shows his love for the White Sox and handles the subject with objectivity (when possible, given that he is a die-hard fan).

The Sox Won The Series in '05 - Can Sox Fans Stop Being Defensive Now?.......2006-12-26

First off, this is a great book written from a Sox fan's point of view. Lots of personal memories and a great opinions of Sox history.

I was never a baseball fan until I moved to NW Indiana in March of 2006. That's when I started working for a company that gave away tickets to White Sox games. My dad was never a baseball fan until he had hernia surgery back when the Cubs were making a run in '03. Go figure, he had just moved to Missouri the year before, you would have thought he would have been a Cardinals fan, like my brother-in-law, who like me, moved to the St. Louis area about 5 years ago and became instantly interested in the Cardinals. Regardless of these two family members, I still was not sold on baseball.

But when someone hands you free tickets to a game, and you can watch all of the games on your TV? It was hard not to get sucked in.

Even though, I noticed as I went to the games, many defensive White Sox fans with CUBS S%CK shirts on and the like. Can we just say that the Sox are the better team since they made it last year and be done with it?

Roeper's book goes over being "the second team in the second city" and he explains how this happens in the late 80's, when WGN became a Superstation, and Cubs games were then broadcast nationwide. What Roeper never got to experience, though, was as a boy growing up in the late 70's in eastern Iowa, we got WGN on our cable station, and being babysat, we occasionally would find WGN and the Cubs on in the afternoon. Who knows how this has influenced the minds of many a young boy to become a Cubs fan. Someone should have called Child Services.

This is a great book, it brought to me the excitement of a die-hard fan, who was grateful for his team finally winning the world series. There are excellent examples of how White Sox fans could have easily cried "curse" much like Red Sox or Cubs fans, but are more down to earth. I especially liked his take on John Cusack calling Reinsdorf for game tickets. Cub fan...

It's a quick read, and should give anybody an idea of what it's like to be a fan of the Chicago White Sox.
