Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

5 out of 5 stars Has history been tampered with?.......2007-10-23

Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/RAZQNMXM4M9CL Has history been tampered with? Yes, it has! Did events and eras such as the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, the Roman Empire , the Dark Ages, and the Renaissance, actually occur within a very different chronology from what we've been told? Yes, they certainly did!

The history of humankind is both drastically shorter and dramatically different than generally presumed.

Why is it so? On one hand, it was usual custom to justify the claims to title and land by age and ancestry, and on the other the court historians knew only too well how to please their masters. The so called universal classic world history is a pack of intricate lies for all events prior to the 16th century. World history as we learn it today was entirely fabricated in the 16th-18th centuries. It's likely that nobody told you before, but

there is not a single piece of firm written evidence or artefact that is reliably and independently dated prior to the 11th century.

Naturally, after what you've learned in school and university, you will not easily believe that the classical history of ancient Rome, Greece, Asia, Egypt, China, Japan, India, etc., is manifestly false.

You will point accusing finger to the pyramids in Egypt, to the Coliseum in Rome and Great Wall of China etc., and claim, aren't they really ancient, thousands of years ancient? Well, there is no valid scientific proof that they are older than 1000 years!

The oldest original written document that can be reliably dated belongs to the 11th century!

New research asserts that Homo sapiens invented writing (including hieroglyphics) only 1000 years ago. Once invented, writing skills were immediately and irreversibly put to the use of ruling powers and science.

The consensual chronology we live with was essentially crafted in the 16th century by the Jesuits.

The world history was compiled from contradictory mix of innumerable copies of ancient Latin and Greek manuscripts and other irrefutable proofs delivered by late mediaeval astronomers that were cemented by the authority of writings of the Church Fathers.

Early in life, we learn about ancient history. Children love the magical lessons of history - they are like fairy tales. Teachers recite breathtaking stories; very soon We learn by heart the names and deeds of brave warriors, wise philosophers, fabulous pharaohs, cunning high priests and greedy scribes.

We learn of gigantic pyramids and sinister castles, kings and queens, dukes and barons, powerful heroes and beautiful ladies, emaciated saints and low-life traitors.

Ancient history is based documents, manuscripts, printed books, paintings, monuments and artefacts - called primary sources.

The problem is that neither these ancient documents, nor events described therein can be irrefutably dated, moreover they contradict each other for the most part.

When a school textbook tells us that Genghis Khan in year X or Alexander in year Y, have each conquered half of the world, it means only that it is so said in some of the written sources.

There are no answers to simple questions:

When were these primary sources written?

Where and by whom were these sources found?

It is wrongly presumed that ancient and medieval chronicles, written by Genghis Khan's or Alexander the Great contemporaries and eyewitnesses, are readily available. Actually, only sources written hundreds or even thousands of years after the events are there, compiled mostly in the 16th 18th centuries, or even later.

As a rule, these sources suffered considerable multiple manipulations, falsifications and distortions by editing. At the same time,

innumerable originals of ancient documents under various pretexts were destroyed in Europe under various pretexts.

The names of persons and geographical sites often changed meaning and location during the course of the centuries.

Geographical locations became clearly defined on maps only with the advent of printing.

This made possible the circulation of identical copies of the same map for purposes of the military, navigation, education and governance tasks.

Historians from Oxford say: "hey, everybody knows that Julius Caesar lived in the first century B.C.

`Julius Caesar' statement is only a point of view as

there is simply no irrefutable documentary proof that Julius Caesar or any other great name of antiquity ever existed.

Better than that - extremely rare sources that can be reliably dated back to the 10th-14th centuries A D, do not show the polished picture of classical history.

They show a picture both contradictory and confusing.

All methods of dating of ancient sources and artefacts are erroneous:

Radio-carbon C14 method produces dating with exactitude of plus minus 1500 years, therefore it is too crude for dating of events in historical timeframe!

The Almagest tractate, which lies as corner stone contemporary chronology, compiled in the 2nd century A D by Ptolemy, the founding father of astronomy, contains astronomical data of 9th to 16th century!

The Bronze Age,that has supposedly began 5000 years ago. Bronze is made of 90% copper and 10% tin, but the technology for tin extraction dates back to 14th century A D!.

All eclipses contained in manuscripts, like Thucydides one, relating 'ancient' events have exclusively medieval dating. All horoscopes cut in stone or painted in Egyptian temples, like Dendera have exclusively early medieval dating solutions.

Not quite what you have learned in school? Open your eyes, and, you will find sufficient proof to reach step by step the inevitable conclusion that the classical chronology is false and therefore, that the history of ancient and medieval world universally accepted today, is also false. Have a fresh outlook on everything said or printed about "ancient" and "enigmatic" Roman, Greek and Egyptian, medieval as well as all other "lost and found" civilizations.

Antiquity and Dark Ages are phantoms invented in the 16th 18th and polished in 19th 20thcenturies. Human civilization is in fact barely 1000 years old!

This book will change your perception of History forever!
What if Ancient Rome, Greece and Egypt were invented during Renaissance?
What if The Old Testament was a rendition of events of the Middle Ages?
What if Jesus Christ was born in 1053 and crucified in 1086 AD?
Sounds Unbelievable?
Not after you've read "History: Fiction or Science?" by Anatoly Fomenko, the genius mathematician.
Armed with astronomy and computers Anatoly Fomenko turns History into a rocket science.

3 out of 5 stars Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

3 out of 5 stars Nice book but not that helpfull.......2003-12-01

I bought this book with the idea of creating logos but that was a mistake. But it's a great book when you are interested in processes. This book shows how companies design logos and their process of getting from start to end. So, much talk about the process, no talk about the techniques.

Book Description

Logos are everywhere. You can't walk down a supermarket aisle, open a magazine, drive down the highway or turn on tv without being pummeled with graphic IDs that shout, "Apple Computers!" or "Nike!" or "Purina!"

Now see where great logos, symbols and icons come from. If you want to understand what makes them "tick"--what makes them good--then look here. This is not your typical collection of neat-and-polished, finished designs. This book steps into the international studios of top designers as ideas happen--to show you what worked, what didn't, and why. You'll even get an up-close and personal look at the making of symbols and icons--two fast-growing, but rarely covered, fields of design.

Inside, case studies illustrate the evolution of logos, symbols and icons created for a variety of clients, from small, start-up businesses to large corporations. You'll get the whole creative story--from the initial client briefing ... through early roughs and intermediary sketches ... to the ultimate, finished design. Don't miss this rare, real-world look at how designers sum up a business or a product in a single, graphic signature.

4 out of 5 stars Process Study.......2003-05-02

This book is helpful in that it shows you what is involved in the design process of creating a successful logo. It doesn't show you exactly how to make one yourself but gives examples of how certain logo's where produced.

3 out of 5 stars More Coffee Table Than Professional Book.......2002-07-09

How To Design Logos (Forget about symbols and icons, there is maybe two or three pages on these aspects in the book.) is more for a general audience than the professional designer.

It has 24 studios working on projects from large to small. One thing I immediately noticed was the influence of the "net" design style of most of the projects. Having been published in late 2000, before the dot bomb era: this was where the bread and butter for these shops was developing. Alas, now they must go elsewhere and their designs after only a year or two seem dated.

I believe it is a good book for the non-professional. Each project has a small write up on how the design was done. These write up are no way an indepth study of the rendering of the logo. It does have great graphics and examples of the development of the logos.

For the coffee table or non-professional I gave it three stars, but if you are looking for professional advice I would give it two.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent study of how logos are developed........2001-12-28

Buy this book! This is a terrific resource for any designer, art director or student wanting to learn more about how a logo or brand evolves from the drawing board to the billboard.

I'm making this required reading for my designers!

5 out of 5 stars Response to the reader from Manhattan Beach, CA.......2001-02-03

I have to say that I do and don't agree with the reader from Manhattan Beach, CA. I agree that reaching a target audience is very important in any identity system. This book, as stated, is designed not just for the art director or the designer, but for student, the entrepeneur, the marketing manager, the high level executive (i.e. CEO, CMO) Etc. According to the review, this book has achieved that goal with flying colors. I have to disagree with the rest of the review. This book's other goal was to enlighten the reader as to the process behind the final logo. To say that the range of logos in the book is average to excellent misses the whole point. It is not a ranking book like so many other logo books. Each logo was simply supposed to represent the very different processes and solutions possible. They were supposed to inspire the creative process and educate the reader (prospective client maybe) on what the process involves. If you follow the purpose of the book, they each stand on their own as excellent examples of creatively tackling the design process. In reading this book, the Philharmonic example was meant to show that although the computer is heavily used today, some ideas still rely on old solutions. In this case, there is no need to show other concepts. It would be hard to illustrate all the concepts and try to make the same point in four pages. Overall, this is a successful book on branding, identity and design.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiriational and Technical.......2000-12-13

As much inspirational as technical, How to Design Logos, Symbols and Icons provides a clear vision of the intricacies and factors that go into the successful design of logos and symbols. Spending more than 100 of its 142 pages delving into the decisions and considerations that are behind some of the most successful and recognizable corporate trademarks in America today, How to Design Logos, Symbols and Icons is an invaluable resource for today's graphic designer. The main vehicle this work uses as an instructional guide is the real life examples of many major corporations and how they approached the design and use of the symbols we all immediately recognize today as well as what they rejected and why. This, coupled with clear forthright descriptions, explanations, and instruction in the basics of this genre of graphic design, make this a must have for the novice, student, expert, or anyone seeking insight into the process that created these remarkable designs. How to Design Logos, Symbols and Icons gives its readers not only what they need to create designs but also to successfully judge the acceptability and appeal of presented designs. In fact, you will never look at the logos and trademarks that surround you in quite the same way again. This book is a must for those interested in the field or currently facing design challenges themselves. Whether you're a novice or a professional, this work will not only get your creative juices flowing, but flowing in a proven direction of success.

Book Description

The Chrysler Building is surely the jewel in the crown of New York City's skyline. Completed in 1930, the 77-story Art Deco skyscraper--the tallest in the world at the time it was finished--quickly became the symbol of big city glamour, excitement, and style. Its cloud-piercing spire and gleaming, steel-clad ornament depicting gargoyles, hubcaps, and the winged helmets of Mercury came to represent the thrill of the Machine Age at its most exuberant.

But, until now, this magnificent building has also been one of the least documented and studied, a simple result of the fact that there were no known archives relating to its design or construction. This material was lost in the decades following its completion, or so everyone believed, until author David Stravitz discovered a box of negatives on the floor of a defunct stock photo company, just days before they were to be shipped off for silver reclamation. The never-before-seen photographs, reproduced as sumptuous duotones in this oversize book, illustrate the day-by-day construction of this American icon.

The photographs were taken by professional photo companies hired to document the construction of the building. In so doing, they also captured the day-to-day life taking place on the streets and in the environs of the Chrysler Building in exquisite detail.

This book beautifully illustrates the history of one of the most important buildings in New York as it emerged from street level to spire.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars THE New York Skyscraper.......2005-05-02

This is a wonderful book with amazing vintage black and white period photos. The book mostly focuses on the building of the skyscraper in the 30's and my only qualm with the book is the lack of current photos of the building, but that is a minor critisism and should not reflect on the overall excellent quality of the book. The Chrysler Building is a pinnacle of Art Deco style and I love it. The history of the building is so interesting and story of the spire is such a quenticential New York moment. I recomend this book to anyone who loves the romance of the skyscraper and this one is magical.

5 out of 5 stars A Loving Restoration.......2005-04-20

This book is very expensive, but very worth it.

As described, the author discovered, almost by accident, a real treasure trove of exquisitely high quality photographs taken to document the building's completion to architectural specification. Rounding out a wonderfully detailed description of the economic and entrepreneurial forces behind its construction, these beautiful pictures bring the reader back into not just a major building project but a whole era. See the clothes, the cars - everything that made this a pinnacle of American exuberance and optimism.

While the text is good, you might want to look at two other better examples of stories of the buildings that symbolized this era: John Tauranac's book on the Empire State building and "Great Fortune," Daniel Okrent's rendering of "The Epic of Rockefeller Center."

They were hard times, to be sure, but often remembered with special fondness for those things which symbolized what we aspired.

4 out of 5 stars Fascinating--but who is the author?.......2005-03-12

The photos are undeniably great. All that is missing is the Cloud Club. But I'm still trying to figure out who David Stravitz is. Certainly not the author. Not one of the photographs is his. By his own admission he stumbled across this work. The firm actually responsible, Peyser & Patzig does merit a few mentions but not on the cover or the title page. Of course none of this detracts from the photos but as a photographer himself, Mr. Stravitz might be a little sensitive about taking credit for the work of others. Even Christopher Gray, who contributes a lot more than Mr. Stravitz gets low billing.

5 out of 5 stars The glory of Van Alen's frivolity.......2003-10-06

Author David Stravitz wisely bought over five hundred, soon to be destroyed, negatives in 1979. They pictured New York in the 1920s and 30s and in particular one hundred and fifty showed the day by day construction of the Chrysler Building. Over a hundred of them are reproduced in this stunning book. Taken by commercial photographers Peyser & Patzig, most likely as a record for the contractor Fred Ley, they show the building as a hole in the ground on November nine 1929 to the completion of the annex in January nine 1931.

There is something about pre-war photos, perhaps the chemicals used on glass plates or the type of paper used for the black and white prints but whatever, old photos seem to have a richness of texture that enhances their appearance and you certainly notice this in these pictures. As well as their quality (don't forget this was straightforward commercial photo assignment) there is plenty to see of the building construction, what is going on in the surrounding streets and several panoramas of mid-town Manhattan taken from the Chrysler Building, including a dramatic four-page gatefold.

This is the sort of detail you'll see, pages eight and nine show the empty building site (taken on November nine) and traffic on three sides, turn the page to see a photo (November seventeen) showing dozens of male spectators looking down on the building site, now full of working construction equipment, traffic and a newsstand has appeared on a corner, by December one this newsstand has become a hut and incorporated into the fencing that now runs round the site. After the exterior, the cameraman went inside to capture the lovely deco detailing.

In the back of the book there are thumbnails and captions for the photos. Page 154 has five floor plans (I was rather disappointed that there were not more diagrams showing the exterior decorative work) and you realise that the building is not oblong, the non-street end has a chamfered side. Just one of the many insights that you'll get from this fascinating photo study of one of the world's great landmarks.

5 out of 5 stars For the Chrysler Building lover in all of us........2003-07-01

This is it.
This is the one you want, if you have a love for the Chrysler building's construction, her insides and outsides.
Beautiful photos - all black and white, in a beautifully presented book. It creates a brilliant record of the construction of one of the most loved buildings in the world.
Highly recommended.

Since ancient times, humans have revered certain objects as reminders of the spiritual and have honored them in shrines and altars. Author and photographer Jean McMann explores this tendency in all its complex modern forms, both religious and secular, in this tribute to altar making. Each artist--for that is what they are--tells the story of how a bookshelf, a mantel, a garden, or even a car became a repository of memory, inspiration, luck, and prayer. From Andrew Romanoff's memorabilia of ancestors who ruled Russia to Violet Ruth Super's shrine to Elvis, a moving purity of feeling underlies each pebble and postcard.

Book Description

Don't we all crave a refuge from daily life, a haven of tranquility, regardless of our creed? Altars and Icons draws together 40 eclectic personal shrines in the first photographic celebration of its kind. Here are altars -- formal and casual, secular and religious, heartfelt and whimsical -- created to evoke contemplation, inspire creativity, amuse, encourage, or honor the memory of a loved one. Amalia and Carlos Vasquez celebrate the Day of the Dead in a bright-hued altar of roses. Harrod Blank makes his car an emotional sounding board, adding a new element (bottle cap, figurine, birthday cake) each time he feels the urge to express himself. Eleanor Coppola offers a sunny spot for family memories, while in other homes a kitchen table commemorates Kwanza and a living room altar showers praise on a beloved cow. Including interviews with the people who fashion these remarkable shrines, as well as plenty of how-to tips, Altars and Icons is inspiration for creating your own sacred place.

3 out of 5 stars Nice, but needed a broader perspecitve.......2001-01-06

I bought this book for a friend for Christmas, as we are both hoarders of odd objects and possess casual versions of "altars" in our respective homes. I found the photography to be very attractive and the overall idea of the book to be sound (which was why I purchased it as a gift), but I wish the creator(s) had branched out a bit from the idea of altars bound to Christian ideas; there seemed to be many. I think that a global approach would have made this book meatier and more enjoyable.

3 out of 5 stars Fairly Nice Little Book.......1999-04-03

Fun to look at the altars photographed for the book, but majority of them have Southwest/Hispanic feeling, which seems to infer that that's the only style of altar around. Not so. Many people are building/assembling altars with a wide range of materials. Author could have done a lot more with her topic by showing a wider variety of altars.

5 out of 5 stars A graceful, thoughtful look at how we remember........1999-02-20

What a wonderful book. Jean McMann's luminous photographs, paired with her subjects' words, combined to create an enlightening, moving experience for me. I enjoyed the many different kinds of stories and shrines, from the simple little computer shrine, to a more elaborate wedding mantle, to the very moving shrines to deceased loved ones and beloved pets. This book makes me realize that creating concrete ways to remember and commemorate important events and people is a natural, almost involuntary part of human nature. We create shrines, big and small, all the time without realizing it. The simple way we arrange family photos on our living room mantle, the way we arrange a vase of flowers next to a candle next to a souvenir from a meaningful trip...that's a shrine. The realization of this has helped to bring spirituality and grace into my life.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting, and well-written.......1998-08-10

I enjoyed this book thouroughly. It affirmed personal beliefs and practices I've upheld for years. The photographs were gorgeous and the individual stories were well- edited and fasinating. The author's own comments were lovely to read as well. Thank you, Jean Mcmann!

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully photographed and thought provoking.......1998-08-01

I found this book extremely well writen and interesting. Also, it seems to really address some issues that are current for most of us these days. Jean Mcmann shows us concrete ways to express spirituality and demonstrates how some people are bringing it into their everyday surroundings. It seems to affirm that we do have interests in realms beyond the physical yet explains how to make these interests real and practical in our homes and offices and anywhere we go. I really enjoyed this book.

5 out of 5 stars A Delightful Journey through the Nutmeg State.......2007-10-05

A delightful compendium of Charles Monagan's Connecticut Magazine columns written over the years, his collection features some of Connecticut's most beloved sights. It also includes a few of Connecticut's own original inventions, such as Pez, Mounds Bar, The Colt .45, Wiffle Ball, The Top-Sider, Raggedy Ann, Silly Putty, The Sunfish, and Witch Hazel. It's a collection that will leave even those who have lived in Connecticut all of their lives saying, "Wow, I never knew that about Connecticut!" Monagan's prose is elegant, colorful and rich in detail, and each of the 50 essays is thoroughly enjoyable.

The author takes us on a journey through a State that is vibrant in all of its natural offerings. His first stop is "that charming little archipelago off the Branford coast" - The Thimble Islands, one of which Monahan describes with characteristic eloquence: "a lone house sits possessively astride its rock like an insect on a bread crumb." His collection concludes with a look at Connecticut's lighthouses. He asks the reader, "Who isn't drawn to the image of the faithful, unwavering light flashing high above the crashing waves or through a gathering mist?" Who isn't indeed!

Monagan artfully captures with vivid imagery the finer points of the Connecticut locales he has chosen to profile, including such interesting spots as The Sleeping Giant, Hammonasset Beach, Cornwall Bridge (a 137 year old covered bridge that spans the Housatonic River between Sharon and West Cornwall, Gillette Castle, and Castle Craig. He takes us along the Merritt Parkway and the Post Road, to the Waterbury Train Tower, to the Town Greens and the State Capitol, and shows us with luscious language what makes each attraction special in its own unique Connecticut kind of way.

This book is a wonderful resource and great conversation starter. Every Nutmegger should have one on the coffee table!

5 out of 5 stars A multi-angled window on this place of American origin, Connecticut..........2007-06-22

"Connecticut Icons: 50 Symbols of the Nutmeg State" by Charles Monagan, provides a multi-angled window on the frugal beauty of this place of American origin, Connecticut, evoking its character, traits, and values. Each of the entries gives pithy portraits of sites, facts, and things, resonant with history and laden with a poetic meaning as well as the pragmatism of a people who like to make things work. Whether writing on the hot dog from Blackie's or a gaudy castle, an Italianate train tower in Waterbury or the wiffle ball born of Shelton plastics, roadways as cluttered as the Berlin Turnpike or as would-be pastoral as the Merritt Parkway, a Mounds bar from the Armenian ingenuity of Naugatuck or the Sperry top-sider concocted on the Long Island shores in 1937, amusement parks of yesteryear or white clam pizza, the Yale Bowl's football unheroics or the state capitol's misplaced golden dome, Monagan can turn the banality of the everyday into poetry and history. "Connecticut icons" conjures taken-for-granted foods, tools, greens, roadways, or buildings into signifying traits of deeper value, ethical qualities like "reliability," spareness, frugality, decorum, pride in labor, under-statement, exactitude. This is a splendid book, a work of character, insight and staunch beauty worthy of its subjects.

Pondering "things most of us see but take for granted, that could take a closer look," Monagan graphs a deft "iconography" of place combining sensibility and research, humor, local color, and common sense. If Connecticut "sit[s] between Rhode Island clam chowder and Manhattan clam chowder without a chowder to call our own," there is much else to savor and praise. From witch hazel to tobacco sheds and steamed cheeseburgers and the Cornwall Bridge, "Connecticut Icons" is a work the great Walt Whitman would love and honor as bric-a-brac of the American sublime.

There is a superb essay on Connecticut as ethos and place by the great American poet, Wallace Stevens, who spent the better part of his life in the insurance business and poetry vocation in Hartford, where he had migrated from Pennsylvania Bucks County. It is the best meditation I had ever read on what makes Connecticut abide as place, value, and style in some thrifty, pragmatic way. "It is a question of coming home to the American self in the sort of place in which it was formed," Stevens writes, affirming his ties to "an origin of hardihood, good faith and good will." I go back to it now and then, for inspiration and an overview of this "place of origin." In these bleak times, we need to be reminded of such values. Steven's essay is the only thing that comes close--though in a far less detailed and dated way-- to the under-stated beauty, joy, and insight of "Connecticut Icons."

I bought this book as a gift for a Connecticut native who moved out of state for work and he said it is one of the best gifts he has ever received. This book makes a great gift for your friends who love Connecticut and now find themselves living elsewhere but still pining for Connecticut. It is also a nice way to introduce people to many of the charming sites in Connecticut.

Born in Waterbury 55 years ago, I couldn't get away fast enough from what I considered to be the overly colonial, unhip and dreary industrial towns yet the old stomping grounds remain a major part of my personal nostalgia. Charles Monagan writes as someone who has stayed where he was born and embraced it, delving over the years into all of its nooks and crannies and found a way to remind the rest of us what we have left behind, forgotten, or missed along the way. Full of fun facts and fond observations, this book invites anyone to take a closer look at the Nutmeg state, where we have no chowder and I might add, any accent, being oddly neutral in between the defined patios of NYC and Beantown. A great read!

Each day over 4,000 people take the elevator up to the observatory of the Empire State Building to catch a minute of glory. What almost none of them have known--until now--is just how many people have fought to own outright the crown jewel beneath them, and the chaos that these trophy hunters have caused. "Over the years," writes Wall Street Journal reporter Mitchell Pacelle, "the Empire State Building had exerted an almost magnetic pull over a certain kind of man, the kind who once had nothing and now had everything." The construction of the Empire State Building was a $50 million roll of the dice by a failed political candidate, who took on the impossible task of filling 80 floors with paying tenants in the midst of the Depression just to win the race for skyline supremacy. Thirty years later, the Prudential Company gutted the building's profit potential by leasing it to real estate magnates Larry Wien and Harry Helmsley for 114 years. Their heirs, Peter Milkin and Leona Helmsley, would end up locked in a bitter embrace. Then, in 1991, Prudential decided to sell the tower, and the building entered its most bizarre period as a group of eccentric billionaires fought to control it.

Pacelle masterfully tells the story of Hideki Yokoi, a Japanese businessman with a shady past who became obsessed with the American icon during an $80 million shopping spree. Rebuffed in his pursuit by Prudential, he finally landed the building with the help of his illegitimate daughter, a front man, shell companies, and a fair number of lies--but not for long. Convinced that his daughter had stolen the building from him, he initiated a bizarre family feud that landed two people in jail. Add Donald Trump to the mix (and a plan to upscale the building with luxury condos, classy restaurants, and a hotel) and an epic legal war began between Trump and his nemesis Leona Helmsley, holder of the precious lease. Full of mind-boggling twists and betrayals, Pacelle's book is a priceless cautionary tale about ego, greed, and vengeance, and the inevitable bust that follows every bubble. --Lesley Reed

Book Description

The world's most famous skyscraper, the Empire State Building is an icon as immediately recognizable as the Eiffel Tower, the Great Pyramids, or the Taj Mahal; and for some of the world's most powerful men, it is the ultimate prize. From the day it was erected, it has been the object of obsession for the heads of empires, conjuring their most hidden vices. In a riveting chronicle of betrayal, revenge, family rivalry, and raw greed, award-winning journalist Mitchell Pacelle tells the compelling tale of the history of the Empire State Building and the battle for ownership which reveals the inner workings of a world of powerful, self-made men. Pacelle brings to life the colorful cast of characters involved-a dramatis personae including the most powerful players in the international real estate markets both old and new, including John Raskob and Pierre du Pont alongside Donald Trump, the Helmsleys, Peter Malkin, and the eccentric Japanese billionaire Hideki Yokoi. Before the tale is over, Yokoi will accuse his beloved illegitimate daughter of stealing the building from him, several participants will land in jail, one will die suddenly, and a tense legal standoff will leave the landmark in limbo. One of the most fascinating characters to emerge from this richly layered story is the building itself, with its legendary romances and suicides, its odd tenants, and the countless human triumphs and tragedies that have been played out within its towering walls.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars great read - fast paced and interesting.......2005-06-01

very interesting account of how ego, greed and poor research affect real estate investments.

good historical account of how property values were overinflated and seasoned investors were only too happy to offload them to unsuspecting foreigners. [even though the media claimed america was loosing its landmarks.]

3 out of 5 stars Dated Loose Threads.......2005-04-29

The publication date should give it away but with the climax of this book referring to the gleaming twin towers of the World Trade Centre and Donald Trump dreaming of a potential buyer for the subject, readers today will be left feeling empty having traced what could have been, an interesting saga over 300 pages.

Other than a useful insight into the construction of the Empire, its first decades of presence and the personalities of Yokoi, Helmsley, Malkin, Wein and Trump (mostly within the space of a couple of chapters), what remains is a messy and tedious multifaceted, intercontinental legal dispute, with many arms all leading whether separately or in toto, to little in the way of meaningful conclusion.

An early suggestion as to this American icon being stolen by a wily foreign foe builds to a crescendo of outrage that grabs the reader immediately, only to be forgotten thereafter.

It is this attempt to lead the reader (albeit with a comfortable writing style) so many times to no place at all, together with a conspicuous tendency towards repetition in the final chapters, that leaves the sensation; why did I bother? This story cannot merely be left with Trump holding a torn bag side by side with the heirs of a tattered Japanese business powerhouse. Trump in all respects is the story. Readers deserve to hear the end game.

An unfinished chronicle. Its legacy at least rests with the fact, that in detailing its story to mid 2001, scholars now possess a basis of personal interview upon which to complete this epoch of urban American history.

5 out of 5 stars Better than the pulpiest fiction.......2004-07-07

In typical New York fashion, the story of the Empire State Building, from inception to today is stranger than fiction. In his brilliant book, "Empire: A Tale of Obsession, Betrayal, and the Battle for an American Icon", Mitchell Pacelle reveals the intrigues, wheeling-dealing, and financial brawling that surrounds the greatest symbol of America's financial power. Sometimes the depths to which the players sank were as deep as the Empire State Building is high. There are many of the names that you would expect to be involved in this tale: Raskob, Smith, Helmsley, Trump, but there are plenty of surprises (which I won't give away).

Mr. Pacelle deserves a load of credit, not just for the research (which is impressive enough) but for the glitzy, brash, and engaging style with which he tells this fascinating story. Only in New York would a story like this happen, and only Mr. Pacelle has told it the way it should.

Rocco Dormarunno, author of THE FIVE POINTS

4 out of 5 stars Fascinating tale of greed, passion, and hatred.......2004-03-12

This book is a complex but riveting tale of how the Empire State Building inspires not just affection for a classic American icon, but incredible greed, hatred, and pretty much all of the seven deadly sins. This is also a peek behind the curtain of big time real estate, and a seriously unflattering portrait of most of its practitioners. Absolutely recommended for anyone who wants dirt on Leona Helmsley, or has a vague dislike for Donald Trump. None of these characters, especially the Japanese (both the Yokoi family and the Japanese bankers), comes off as particularly admirable. Very good.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent business history.......2003-11-16

Don't think this book is a PBS-like history of the Empire State Building. It's real purpose is a sexy, Donald Trumpesque review of the transactions that have gone on over this coveted building. The foolishness, the cunning characters, and the overall race to own the building have created a great story for Pacelle to write about. While the book is a bit difficult in that it jumps back and forth in places, the level of knowledge presented is both informative and entertaining.

    Book Description

Though The Velvet Underground existed for no more than three years with its original lineup, it is considered to be not just the "ultimate New York band" but one of the most influential rock groups ever. Among its devotees are David Bowie, The Sex Pistols, Patti Smith, Joy Division, and Nirvana, along with hot new groups such as the White Stripes and the Strokes.

Witts places the band and its genesis in the cultural context of Manhattan's beatnik bohemianism, its radical artistic environment, and the city's reaction to California's "Hippie" counterculture. Lou Reed's Brill Building background is also considered, while his Primitives (1964-65) and Velvet Underground (1965-70) songs are examined within the stylistic context of rock music. The band's sound world is likewise considered in this light. John Cale's experimental contribution is assessed, especially his work for LaMonte Young (The Theatre of Eternal Music), and what he carried from that experience into the Velvet's sound.

Andy Warhol, known to the group as Drella, became the band's manager and producer in 1965. He installed his "superstar" Nico in the line-up (which already included a female drummer). Witts examines the radical nature of the Velvet's Warhol-period performances, vis-à-vis issues of gender, sexuality, and the drug culture which was associated with the Warhol Factory scene, and contemplated in many of Reed's songs.

Witts studies the musical influences of The Velvet Underground on punk, post-punk, and subsequent rock movements, culminating in the group's 1993 reunion. He also indexes the variety of media constructions that the group endured through the years and how these affected the attempts of Cale, Nico, and Reed to establish solo careers.

It must be a near impossible brief to write something aimed at both music undergrads and the `general reader', which this book claims to do but I think Richard Witts pretty much manages to pull it off. `The Velvet Underground' is the first in a series of books on pop icons, (Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell and others are to follow) which not only examines the musical, social and cultural influences on `The Velvets' but which proves to be at one and the same time a downright enjoyable read.

Although set against the background of Manhattan's down town drug culture, this is no seedy romp through the under belly of the 1960s New York music scene. This is a serious book in which just about every aspect of the band's genesis, demise and subsequent influence on punk, post punk and rock music is covered. Each Velvet in turn is subjected to detailed scrutiny in terms of background, his/her gravitation to New York City, musical interests and experiences, influences felt, and contribution to the band and its radical sound-world.

Cale's Experimentalism and his association with the avant-gardist La Monte Young and The Theatre of Eternal Youth, probably receives the most overtly academic analysis, but Reed, Morrison, Tucker, Nico, Warhol and Morrissey are also fully scrutinized in a clear, cogent and well argued challenge to much of the myth and hyperbole which has grown up around this `confluence of misfits' (Witts).

Serious it might be, but anecdotes a-plenty and some sharp comments stop it slipping into too-dry academic commentary. (There's a very funny Witts-ism following a Nico quote which I won't reveal. You can read it for yourself.) So, as long as the general reader who picks up this book has a somewhat serious interest in music or The Velvets, I doubt he will be disappointed. And if the undergrads ever get around to opening the cover, even they might come away having learned something pertinent :-)

    Book Description

THE ORTHODOX NEW TESTAMENT, two-volume set. THE HOLY GOSPELS and ACTS, EPISTLES, AND REVELATION. NEW AND ENLARGED SECOND EDITION AVAILABLE.

With so many English New Testaments on the market, which version is most faithful to the original Greek? How do you choose one that reflects Orthodox perspective and theological content? Our Orthodox monasteries, Holy Apostles Convent and Dormition Skete, labored six years, with a committee of contributors, to present this fully illustrated Orthodox translation, which has been diligently compared against the original Greek text, the authorized version (1912) of the Patriarchate of Constantinople, and the King James Version. There was no compromise of accuracy and reliability in this brand-new translation which echoes the rhythms and idioms of the original Greek. This promises to be an enriched reading experience that gives you an in-depth understanding of God's word, answering commonly asked textual and theological queries for vital and penetrating insights into God's word.

We have brought together a trustworthy and one-of-a-kind patristic commentary which draws from the whole spectrum of the authority of the Church Fathers for a rich, dependable, invaluable resource for devotional reading, Bible study, sermon preparation, and teaching. Explore the Scriptures with the champions of Orthodoxy with hundreds of succinct, reliable, and inspiring commentaries that elaborate on difficult passages, thereby providing a clearer understanding.

Gain a greater understanding of the shades of meaning in the original language with word studies stressing meaningful nuances in the Greek, but often lost in other translations. Even for those who do not know Greek, exegetical material gives critical analysis of key words, that is not overly technical, for both beginners and scholars alike.

Special Features include: (1) Experience the New Testament fully illustrated with Orthodox icons interspersed, thus complementing pertinent text so that you can reverently view Christ, His Mother, the Apostles, and many other biblical personalities, together with sacred events, Bible scenes, miracles, parables, and numerous apocalyptic depictions. (4) At the end of each book of the New Testament, references and informative notes on linguistics, key words, difficult terms and phrases. Extensive explanatory notes packed with information on textual difficulties and theological concepts that enable you to discover the rich truths of the original Greek text. 5 out of 5 stars THE Orthodox New Testament!.......2006-05-27

This is the book I have been looking for! While I appreciate the efforts of the editors of the Orthodox Study Bible, I found this 2-volume New Testament to be MUCH more to my liking. First and foremost, it features a new English translation made by Orthodox scholars primarily from an Orthodox text approved by the Patriarchate of Constantinople. Secondly, it features the direct, in-depth references to the Holy Fathers that are so often lacking in the OSB. The decision to print icons with the text was an excellent one, as the reader can readily relate to both the written and visual Word of God thereby. Clearly the editors of this text went to very great lengths to prepare and present a truly ORTHODOX Bible, and for this they are to be greatly commended. A "must-have" for every English-speaking Orthodox Christian, and extremely valuable as well for those non-Orthodox seeking to learn what the Holy Fathers (who were Orthodox, after all!) have to say about the Holy Scriptures!

2 out of 5 stars Not what I was expecting.......2004-11-15

I am a protestant theologian very interested in Orthodoxy, so I bought this translation hoping for a fresh, readable, Orthodox version of the Bible which made clear how the Orthodox interpreted various passages.

What I got was basically the King James Version. The text is unreadably archaic. The translation differs only in minor ways from any protestant translation.

I had hoped that the excepts from the Fathers would allow me to really come to grips with Patristic exegesis and give me fresh insights into their thinking. I had hoped for a new translation of their writings a change from the archaic and outdated translationn of the Nicene Fathers series. Unfortunately the translators have often just copy-pasted from the Nicene Fathers volumes! The patristic quotations they have choosen do not usually add much to the passages, and do not usually address the questions that are in my mind as I read those passages.

On the positive side, the book is impressive for its beauty, it is nicely printed, with amazingly large text.

The whole thing was an excellent idea in theory - an Orthdox translation with Patristic quotations. But in practice the translators have failed to acheive any degree of excellence. On the whole buying this was a waste of money, and I don't expect to use the volume much in the future. Anyone who wants a Bible should buy the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) instead.

5 out of 5 stars Best translation of the New Testament.......2004-02-22

I have read this New Testament and the companion volume of the Epistles and Revelation with great joy and spiritual enrichment. I plan to keep reading and learning form the depth of the dymanic translation and the comprehensive endnotes by the Church Fathers. Most important is the treating of the Greek tenses so that the dymanic and energetic reality of the energies of God are available which is usually not the case in other translations. I would also like to recommend the new "Orthodox New Testament Research Program" now available on CD ROM where one can search, write notes, form and print research and much more. Wonderful!!

5 out of 5 stars Best Bible Ever!.......2003-04-17

Just like the match Gospels, book, not only is the translation clear to read and faithful to the original Kione Greek, but the Patristic quotes used for the footnotes, makes it far superior to other "Study Bible" or translations. No Christian should be without theis Bible!
