Some good advice, some bad..........2007-10-23
There really is no substitute for experience, and even then there are times where experience is worthless if we haven't learned from it. Books about eBay can help to close the gap between new seller and experienced seller, but none are all encompassing. It is my belief that a great ebay seller is one that is well seasoned AND well read. Can this book augment the latter? Hmm...
I do like how the book breaks the mold of cookie cutter eBay books that simply copy and paste information from eBay's own help section. Instead, this work shares a lot of insight that one cannot readily obtain from help pages or online advocate sites. Information on tax ID numbers, third party utilities, and record keeping are not topics common in help pages or even forums, and even then the information obtained by anonymous, random individuals isn't always accurate. I salute the book for filling in the gaps here.
In other areas though, I think that some of the advice is contradictory and even poor. I don't doubt that the information contained here came from real people based on real experiences, but being a powerseller by default does not constitute knowing the best way, or even a good way to do business.
I find it appalling that the 408 page book only spends some 16 pages discussing shipping. The fine art of shipping involves dynamics that make the whole rest of eBay seem simple by comparison. As a matter of fact, the vast majority of poor experiences on eBay are attributed to poor shipping, lack of knowledge when it comes to shipping, or misconceptions about shipping obligations or practices. The book takes one of the most complicated and important facets of eBaying and shoves it into a corner as to minimize focus on the subject. The section on shipping is so small as a matter of fact, that some readers might skip over what little information is here, forced to continue loss through undercharging, refunds, and negative feedback.
International trade is also marginalized down to 2, yes two, pages. There is no possible way that the plethora of knowledge needed to effectively trade internationally can be put to two pages. This serves to provide just enough to get someone in trouble.
The book further contradicts itself by saying that you should not pad your shipping charges, only to charge at cost, but then it advocates hiding the actual charges from your customers. The book also advocates such things as getting a Paypal debit card, which means that your funds are subject to seizure and you will not be collecting a significant amount of return on your investment as you would with say, a normal savings account or a certificate of deposit. Most experienced sellers do not keep a balance in Paypal. Furthermore, the book mentions that Cashier's Checks and Money Orders are risk free. This couldn't be further from the truth. The majority of online fraud is committed with wire transfers, checks, and especially, money orders.
While I think there is plenty of good advice here, the bad advice here should be apparent to anyone that has had their fair share of eBay selling experiences. It is for reasons such as these books, that there is no substitute for experience, and until you've gotten your feet wet, you won't know which parts are right or wrong.
High hopes weren't quite fulfilled.......2007-10-06
I had high hopes for this book. Great title, but it left me feeling a little disappointed. I learnt a few things, but it didn't represent any huge breakthroughs. My favorite part was chapter 4 which reviewed the pros and cons of the various listing tools and software.
Easy and informative.......2007-09-11
If you are interested in becoming a more effective seller and a knowledgeable buyer this is a very informative book. Its simple format lends itself to quick reference or more in-depth discussions, depending on your level of inquiry. I've read a lot of ebay books and this is a great one to purchase! Check out my ebay profile at jjjs04. Good luck!
Great tips of the trade!.......2007-01-18
Way to go!
This book gave me more information that I ever could have needed for starting up an Ebay business and I will continue to use it as a reference and guide for many of the troubling questions that arise in the cyber-business world.
The authors gave you more resources than you can imagine as well as detailing the benefits of becoming an Ebay Power Seller. It's amazing how much information they crammed between the pages and how amazingly detailed and forthcoming they were with the information. I was surprised to see the multiple lists for valuable online resources, and for those of us who learn best by seeing things in action-- they even have screen-shot pictures in the book with the corresponding URLs to the areas that can give you the most information.
As stated before, this book has a permanent place on my shelf as a reference guide to Ebay and beyond. Even if you're a current seller on Ebay, looking to upgrade your status to a Power Seller, give this book a shot. It could give you the extra boost you need for driving your business toward its goals and setting you on the right paths toward them.
Excellent and recommended tool for your Ebay business!
A complete guide to profit on ebay.......2007-01-11
This book has so many cool tricks you can use on ebay, that its virtually impossible to fail and not make good money. Lerning from the many experiences of other sellers is essential for me, expecially when it comes to learn from their mistakes. Great guide.

I've been waiting for this book for SIX months!.......2006-11-13
I've been waiting for this book for SIX months!
If you read the first book by Brad and Debra Schepp (eBay Power Seller Secrets) You'll love this book, if you didn't read the first book, eBay Powerseller Secrets, I highly advise that you buy both! Brad and Debra Schepp write with an easy to read style. I feel these two books have more value than the other 40 eBay and ecommerce books I have on my shelf. I like the fact that this book delves deeper into the culture of eBay sellers than most other eBay books.
You won't find anything about the SYI form or how to list your item. This book is far more advanced and gives you insight into who the successful PowerSellers are on eBay and why, it may as well be the who's who of eBay PowerSellers. Brad and Debra are associate members of the Professional eBay Seller's Alliance, they seem to have the inside track on everything eBay. They even write for the auction industry news authority Auctionbytes.
Unlike other authors that pretend to be experienced eBay experts, Brad and Debra don't, they bring you the stories and facts from the experts in a far more valuable format that reads more like entertainment than a boring business instruction book. I do advise that when you sit down to read this book to have highlighter or sticky notes handy, the concepts fly at you and you can't put this book down, do yourself a favor and mark the spots when you have those million dollar AHA moments while reading. Instead of getting the perspective of just an author, Brad and Debra bring you the perspectives of many different sellers. Brad and Debra put some soul and personality into the book bringing wisdom from what appears to be over 100 of the top sellers on eBay.
They touch quite a few topics that are near and dear to my heart.
How to find products (the simple and cheap way)
Multi Channel Sales (Our New Mantra)
The future of listing enhancements (Free pictures, audio and even video)
Google Adwords, Froogle and Gbase.
Your eBay community and interaction with it. (Sharing with others produces returns)
Bonus section (Top 500 sellers and the top 200 fastest growing sellers on eBay)
Brad and Deb's first book eBay Powerseller Secrets:Insider Tips from eBay's Most Successful Sellers encouraged me to start my own me page and helped develop processes that I use today. They are solid no bull writers that practice what they preach, I'm sure if they wanted to , with all the information they have gathered, they could be one of the top ten sellers on eBay, but you can definitely tell when reading their books that their passion is writing about eBay and technology, they capture the soul of eBay and bind it for you. If I could only have one eBay book, this would be it.
Great eBay Book!.......2006-11-13
Authors talk to top eBay PowerSellers and reveal their secrets to success. Useful, actionable advice. Highly recommended.
EBAY POWERSELLER: MILLION DOLLAR IDEAS -- A "MUST READ" FOR EBAY SELLERS!.......2006-11-09
Brad & Deb Schepp really know how to give eBay sellers what they want! As a long-time eBay PowerSeller and Certified eBay Education Specialist, I know first-hand, what it takes to become successful and all the pitfalls that one must go through to obtain PowerSeller status. eBay PowerSeller Million Dollar Ideas has it all! The information is invaluable and easy to read. I learned so many new ways to save time and money, just in the first few chapters and there are sooooooo many fabulous tips and tricks, that it was hard to figure out which one I wanted to try first!
I really enjoyed reading about all the different ideas of my fellow PowerSellers and felt like I had made a whole new group of friends, after reading all of the "Meet A PowerSeller" profiles. The personal touch was a great addition to all the technical information.
This book is a must-read and well worth the cover price, as the book will pay for itself over and over again. This will be required reading for all of my future eBay students! -- Stephanie Inge aka Stephintexas
Bursting with Million Dollar Ideas!.......2006-11-03
Fantastic book! Even better than their first Powerseller book (which was wonderful). If you are looking for creative ways to improve your eBay business, this book will set you off on a running start.
It is full of specific examples from quality eBay sellers and real world examples: search engine optimization ideas, customer relation ideas, marketing and advertising, and even selling beyond eBay. Plenty of screen shots for great visual examples.
It is very well written and easy-to-read. More importantly, it's easy to reference. At the end of every chapter there is also a wonderful "Meet a Powerseller" write-up.
If you are serious about your eBay business (or any online business), this book is a must-read. Have a highlighter ready. You'll need to use it!

Helpful, Concise, Complete, Needed.......2006-11-06
An excellent book for E-Bay sellers (or buyers) -- a fine listing of almost anything you can think of to sell, and the approx price of them. I found it to be very useful for my e-bay business.
Not for the serious user.......2006-01-17
but then again, what other kind of user wld attempt such a big book?
it's very very vague, even for a beginner.
Tons of information for newcomers and oldies.......2006-01-06
This book is packed full of information for anyone who uses ebay. Buyers and Sellers, they've got everything you will ever need to know in here. I would recommend this book if your needing some extra cash and you are going to use ebay. This book will show you how to milk the most out of ebay and attract more members. It will show you how to get the word out, make your auction look more professional, and tons of do's and dont's of ebay.
Look elsewhere first.......2005-04-02
An average book. Does not contain any information that the other books don't contain. I recommend looking at other eBay books instead of this one. An overuse of white space makes this book very big.
After reading the top eBay books, below are my recommendations:
---Beginner with eBay and computers---
1. The Official eBay Bible
---eBay Seller---
1. Sell it on eBay
2. eBay Hacks
---Full-Time eBay Business (not for the casual seller)---
1. eBay Strategies
2. eBay Business the Smart Way
Ho Hum.......2005-01-29
Very basic information. This book is for the beginner just learning the ropes about eBay. If you have been using the site for some time now, then you know just as much as whats in this book.
The resources for sellers to find "wholesale" products were terrible. The sites basically sell junk or overpriced refurbs.

Great resources for newbies.......2007-10-22
As someone who wanted to get started as an Ebay seller, this book was a great resource for me. The buyer section was a little mundane since I've been doing that for awhile, but I still learned pointers that I didn't know before. For the potential seller who is intimidated by the unknown, however, this is a gold mine of tips, hints, and how-tos on getting started as a seller on Ebay.
So you want to sell on ebay? Which book to buy?.......2007-01-15
How eBay Really Works is a latecomer to the How to sell on ebay book category and that's a good thing because it's fresh, not dry and outdated. Back when I was starting there were fewer books about ebay, Most of them were a dry read and had lots of screenshots of ebay web pages. Some of those old books are here on Amazon and sell quite well due to their ratings and longevity on Amazon itself. I've read quite a few of them and I can tell you they are getting stale quickly.
Brad and Deb told me they were writing a new book geared towards the ebay novice, the ebay buyer who wishes to become a seller. I thought, "Boy have they got a job". I thought how could they make it different and better, than the other 100 how to sell on ebay books already pounded out by everyone and his brother/sister who thinks they know how to "eBay". Writers, who have never sold or bought a thing on ebay, yet profess to others in print as if they were experts.
First you get two writers for the price of one! Second you get 352 packed pages of eBay info for only $14.95! Brad & Deb are true hardcore ebay aficionados buying and selling on ebay. If they haven't bought or sold it on ebay they know someone who has! And that is where their strength and expertise lies, when they write an eBay book they harness the power of the eBay community and bring it to life on printed pages, you'll never be bored reading How eBay Really Works, It features quite a few of the best sellers on eBay contributing the best secrets and tips they have, found in no other book. The My Best eBay Sale and My Best eBay Buy stories that end each chapter really pull this book together. There are lots of sidebars, interesting facts and quick start lists sprinkled throughout.
I think every buyer and seller on eBay should have this book! It really does explain how to be the best buyer you can be, how to get the best deals, how to handle a transaction gone bad and how to avoid a bad transaction in the first place. It really is about how eBay really works and in a few places the underbelly of ebay is exposed, something ebay doesn't want you to see. ( eBay is not always a rosy picture, despite how ebay and the media paint it.) This book will help you navigate those pitfalls with hints and advice from top sellers who have been in the reader's shoes.
One of the sections I enjoyed most in the book was setting up a website and moving beyond eBay. I think this section was very applicable for an eBay book and should be one of the first considerations for anyone who wishes to make a living selling online. Ebay is now like the Army, (It's a great place to start). The truth about eBay's Prostores, not to be confused with eBay Stores, is an eye-opener, another must consider section of the book. Ultimately, the message in the book is that you can do it, you can sell on eBay, it's easier than you think, the authors point out all the things you need to know in order navigate ebay SKILLFULLY.
Brad and Deb have written three eBay books
eBay Powerseller Secrets:Insider Tips from eBay's Most Successful Sellers
eBay PowerSeller Million Dollar Ideas
How eBay Really Works
I have bought and read all three, each is different, yet all are packed with information you can use. I recommend purchasing this one and ebay Powerseller Million Dollar ideas together, you get a discount and more bang for your buck!
Helpful, and Easy to Read and Use Guide. .......2007-01-06
This is one of the few eBay books I've read that really gives the whole picture about eBay--not just relentless cheerleading about how much of a sure thing it is. Half of the book is for new buyers; the other is for new sellers. So there's a lot here for new eBay users no matter what they're interesetd in. I like that the authors use a lot of stories from real sellers and buyers to make their points and keep this fun to browse through and read.
Good book but..........2006-12-18
If you've read Ebay Powerseller Secrets. I would suggest you skip this one.
Book Description
In 2002, 300,000 vehicles with a total value of $3 billion were sold -- on one Web site. Is it any surprise the site is eBay? For buyers, sellers, dealers, and parts and accessories vendors, there's simply no other marketplace to match the huge selection, broad exposure, and ease of use that are eBay's hallmarks. eBay Motors the Smart Way offers sellers and dealers:
* strategies for setting and getting top price for any vehicle * techniques for creating attention-grabbing auction ads * new ways to add value with superior customer service * valuable tips for using auction management services and other time-saving resources * proven methods for maximizing reputation
Also a valuable tool for buyers, the book shows how to:
* determine a vehicle's value * how find great deals and bargains * arrange an inspection and run a "lemon check" * secure financing for an online vehicle purchase
eBay Motors the Smart Way offers valuable information for all readers on how to avoid fraud and scams, how to properly document your transactions, and how to conform to state vehicle laws -- even when transacting business over state lines.
From Mazerati to MoPed, Acura to Zamboni, if it runs on a motor, it'll take off on eBay!
Customer Reviews:
It got me the exact car I wanted........2006-02-01
Without reading this book, I never would have thought to contact the seller and make an offer that would end the auction immediately. As a result, I was able to get the exact car I wanted, and the seller got his cash the next day, without having to worry about possibly flaky bidders. Win-win.
That bit of advice - by itself - was worth five stars. But there's other good stuff in the book too.
Ebay Motors, the smart way.......2005-12-15
"eBay Motors, the smart way". Obviously written by a ghost writer, who relates the information second hand. A poorly written book. Lots of useless, impractical dictionay style information. The two "crafty" authors make a feeble attempt at providing actual applicable selling and buying methods, however they fail miserably. On a positive note, a real catchy cover. Numerous blank pages inside, lots of white pages of air space. An obvious attempt at stretching this book out to 290 pages. Frankly, after purchasing and reading, it was a total waste of time and money. This book is a real "dud". Peter Vrouhas, Boynton Beach, FL
Very limited..........2005-09-07
I couldn't find a lot of real information for buying and selling on e-bay with this book. The book seems to have more on common sense than on laws and regulations. I admit that I bought the book to learn more about buying and selling as a hobby and I find it more directed at first time buyers or buyers only interested in buying or selling once. He gives no references to state laws or regulations. I found that in order to make the book work I had to find majority of the important information online.
This book is good for people that are looking for an overview of what to look for in cars on e-bay motors. It's an easy read with large print (much how the Dummies books are written). If you're looking for e-bay "know how" experience, it's not here, so if you are new to e-bay, you should buy a separate book.
Overall, I think the book could have been better. It seemed to be a fill in the blanks kind of book when I was looking for answers.
Handy if you're ever inclined to buy or sell a vehicle .......2004-08-11
How can eBay Motors be used effectively to gain top dollar for a new or used vehicle, or how can a buyer be assured of getting the right deal through Ebay Motors? Buyers and sellers alike learn how to use eBay Motors most effectively, including tips on how to handle taxes, insurance, inspections, and lemon cars. Kee eBay Motors The Smart Way handy if you're ever inclined to buy or sell a vehicle via this method.
Very informative.......2004-03-28

Good basic guide for newbies.......2006-07-03
I just finished reading the second eBay book in the pocket guide series and I must confess that I did not enjoy it as much as the first (How to Sell Clothing). I think perhaps the writer got off on the wrong foot when she admitted in the beginning pages that she knew nothing about selling collectibles (or anything else) on eBay before writing it. Although I understood the point she was trying to make, this does not inspire much confidence in readers who want to learn the ins and outs of the business. Some things are better left unsaid.
And other things need to be expanded on. For example, the book covered most of the basics on starting and operating an eBay business in an easy-to-understand format, which is a plus. But if you are looking to find new information on how and where to find collectibles, or inspirational ideas for different niches in the collectibles category, the book does not have much to offer in those areas. However, I did enjoy the spotlight sidebars which offered interesting trivia about renowned collectibles and memorabilia.
Bottom line: This book could be a good resource for someone new to eBay who wants to sell collectibles; but experienced sellers will probably want to pass.

Customer Reviews:
On target info for perspective home buyers........2007-01-10
Johnson's attempt to educate perspective home buyers on the use of the Internet to find homes and mortgages is a "must read" for home buyers.
It seems to give the home buyer control over most aspects of his/her "dreamquest." It is a "do it yourself" demostration, a "problem solving aid" which equips the reader with some of the tools necessary to get the job done. The potential careful reader quicky discovers that the Internet can ease or solve most problems dealing with the purchase of a home!
What You Don't Know Will Hurt You!.......2000-12-18
Having purchased two previous homes, I thought I knew all there is to know: you call up a realtor who takes you around to see houses and you pick from a 30-year or a 15-year fixed rate mortgage. Wow! Was I wrong! Thanks to Randy Johnson's latest book on using the internet to find a home and get a mortgage, I now know that there are many types of mortgages available, many of them better- tailored to most people's needs than the two I've already named. I've learned the difference between a "mortgage banker" and a "mortgage broker" and that I may save thousands of dollars by using the services of an Upfront Mortgage Broker, one who agrees to sign a pledge to act in the best interests of the customer. I now know about the advantages of automated underwriting and the difference between rate versus fee when shopping for a mortgage. Imagine my astonishment to learn that paying points for a lower rate is a good strategy that may save me thousands of dollars in the long run! The author has made a highly technical subject easy to understand through charts and personal examples. I now have access to scores of helpful internet sites and forms to download. True to the book's title, I have shopped for a home in another state, qualified for a loan and am about to obtain a mortgage, all while sitting in front of my computer! If you, too, want to SHOP SMART for a home or mortgage, this is the book for you.

Lots of information, but not enough on marketing.......2000-07-12
The book on a whole was useful, but if you were looking for a book specifically on internet marketing, you might be disapointed. The book starts from the very beginning (e.g. how to connect to the internet) I found it to be too basic at times. I bought the book hoping to find out more about different marketing trends and strategies. It does touch on most areas, but the book itself was too basic. I did not get the detail that I wanted. The book did not cover specific trends such as one-to-one marketing or Permission Marketing. The concepts were mentioned, but the terms were not used. This might be because the book was published in London. On the whole I was disapointed as I did not get the specific informtion that I needed. Instead I got the bigger picture. For a beginner, this book is perfect.

Help is available.......2003-05-03
This book did, indeed, help me through a jungle I had not
entered before. It was worth the price of admission. Since
following the steps outlined, I have both bought and sold
with confidence and success. Why not 5 stars? I don't know,
maybe because no one is perfect. I appreciated the book
very much.
Not a How to for Sellers, just basic customer service info.......2001-10-25
This book will not show you how to be an Ebay Power Seller. It goes over very basic stuff: How to ship, leaving feedback, sending emails, putting up images, how to be an Ebay buyer. I did not gain anything from it. You can learn all of this for free online, by listing items. Also it is full of typos and other errors.
A Quick Read For Novices With Commonsense Advice.......2001-03-19
There's nothing really wrong with this book; it is well-written and clearly organized. But it's usefulness is limited to auction novices with commonsense and solid (if unspectacular) advice. The more veteran eBay'er will find little new here. The author includes comments, experiences and advices from three veteran online sellers. It's a pity this idea wasn't expanded both by the number of commentators and the frequency of thier insights. Serviceable freeware is included (which is almost guaranteed to be out-of-date by the time the package is opened). But it is a useful starting point for those new to this "hobby".
