Book Description
Dr. Dean Ornish is the first clinician to offer documented proof that heart disease can be halted, or even reversed, simply by changing your lifestyle. Based on his internationally acclaimed scientific study, which has now been ongoing for years, Dr. Ornish's program has yielded amazing results. Participants reduced or discontinued medications; their chest pain diminished or disappeared; they felt more energetic, happy, and calm; they lost weight while eating more; and blockages in coronary arteries were actually reduced.
In his breakthrough book, Dr. Ornish presents this and other dramatic evidence and guides you, step-by-step, through the extraordinary Opening Your Heart program, which is winning landmark approval from America's health insurers. The program takes you beyond the purely physical side of health care to include the psychological, emotional and spiritual aspects so vital to healing. This book represents the best modern medicine has to offer. It can inspire you to open your heart to a longer, better, happier life.
Customer Reviews:
This diet works!!!!!.......2007-09-19
This program works as my father is living proof. You have to be very dedicated to be able to follow it. My father refuses to have any kind of surgery, meds etc and has followed Dr Ornishs program in this book and has lost weight, and his cholesterol is down and he feels great. His Dr says to keep doing what he is doing.
research.......2007-05-24
Dr Ornish just skips over mountains of research on the healing benefits of various oils and essential fatty oils.He substitues his own "clinical trials" for independent research.I will wait for the independent research to come out before I make an evaluation of his diet.
UNGAINLY FOR THE READER.......2007-05-20
I am unhappy to report that the presentation of Dr. Ornish's book makes it impossible to absorb the information.
The font in the paperback is uncomfortably small, and the typesetting is scrunched leaving minimal space, making it impossible for the eye to rest comfortably and stay with the text.
Consequently it is a frustrating read and difficult for the reader to take advantage of Dr. Orinish's expertise.
Had I been forewarned I would not have purchased this edition.
Saved my father's health!!.......2007-03-14
I purchased this book in Spring of 2004 for my father who had just suffered from a moderate heart attack and he started following the diet almost immediately; within a year his arteries were completely free of any signs of buildup. His cardiologist who had never even mentioned a modification to his diet was impressed and told him that most people aren't willing to change their eating habits that much. He is currently healthier than ever and no longer takes any prescription medications, only daily vitamin E to keep his blood thin as well as "regular" vitamin and mineral supplementation. I would suggest this book to anyone who wants to reverse their heart disease in a non-traditional way!
Empower yourself to improve your health.......2007-01-12
Dr. Ornish's excellent book is readable, entertaining, and full of valuable information on how to prevent heart disease.

The Pill Book is Great.......2007-10-03
This is my second different copy of the Pill book and I would not take any medications without reading it first. I am disappointed though that I could never find the book in hard back
The Pill Book.......2007-09-17
This is a very good book. It tells you a lot more than the pharmacy papers that you receive with your drugs.
Useful and Easy to Read.......2007-05-16
I am a college student who is planning on applying to a pharmacy school in the next year or two. I also currently work at a pharmacy.
This book is really helpful in getting me acquainted with medications. I study one or two different medications a night just so I will be familiar with the prescriptions when I'm at work or later on when I'm in pharmacy school. It familiarizes me with the generic and brand names of drugs, side effects, uses, etc. When I'm at work I have the pharmacists quiz me on stuff when there's a lull and nothing to do. Because it's so easy to read, I actually look forward to reading it at night before I sleep-- it's definitely easier to get through than some of the reading I'm assigned at school!
I brought it home for my parents, who find it only slightly useful. My dad is the only one who picks up prescriptions, and it's usually the same stuff all the time, so after reading up on his meds he didn't really have any interest in the book. However, I can see how some families, and not just students, can find this book useful.

Customer Reviews:
Good handy book of prescription drugs.......2007-09-21
It's a good reference book. However, the pages rip off on the colored picture pages in the middle of the book too easily.
Pill smart-Patient saavy.......2007-05-23
For the Patient who wants to know about prescription drugs efficacy, side effects and cautions "The Pill Book" is a modestly priced and handy reference which puts the Patient on the same level with a Physicians drug reference manual, when it comes to uderstanding the consumption of precribed medications. If we want to know about what food we put into our mouths, why not know what pills we consume ?
Great resource.......2007-05-12
I bought this product for my mother and she just loved it. She says it is a great resource for her prescriptions.
Great for medical personnel.......2007-02-21
I work in a general Ophthalmology practice and use this guide almost daily. It gives enough information without being overwhelming. It also has a condition index so when a patient says their blood pressure med starts with a "L" it is easy to find. I just bought the 7th edition, and still have the 6th at the office also.
Pocket guide - HA!.......2007-01-09
The info is valuable but this is advertized as a "pocket guide" - not in my pocket! I'm a CRNA and wanted a small reference convenient to pick up and look up medications while in the hospital. I leave this book home - I use it there.

Customer Reviews:
Tears of a Tiger.......2007-08-01
This book is a must read for teenagers. It is insightful and thought provoking...the story line is something that many can and unfortunately, may relate to as they go through high school.
Drinking Causes Death.......2007-06-21
Andy is a high-school student and a good basketball player. His best friend Robbie is the star of the basketball team, and the two of them hang out with two other close friends, Tyrone and B.J. One night after a good game, they get into Andy's car. All except B.J. are drinking. On their way home, they get into a car accident and Robbie is killed, while the other three are barely injured. Andy isn't even charged with much of anything; he goes back to school like things are normal.
Inside, though, things are far from normal. Andy feels distant from everyone, and he is wracked with guilt. He continues to lean on his girlfriend, Keisha, and shares all of his depression with her. His parents have never been very close to him, and they aren't there for him now that he needs their support. None of his classmates or his teachers seem to be able to understand what he is going through. Andy often feels like he is drowning in sorrow and he can't let go of the accident.
I liked the idea of following a student through such a tragedy to see how he was affected by it. I also liked the different points of view in this story; they helped me to get a more well-rounded idea of what everyone in the story was thinking.
I thought that some of the parts of this story were very unrealistic. These were pretty savvy high school kids, yet they had old-fashioned ideas about sex and they never used swear words. I'm sure that was done to prevent the book from being censored out of high school libraries, but it made the characters seem less real. I also found it hard to believe tht teachers would be as prejudiced as the teachers in this school were.
great book.......2007-06-14
Tears of a Tiger is a very exiting book that you can't stop reading. This is my all time favorite book. Teas of a Tiger is a book about a teenage kid named Andy who blames himself for the death of his best friend who died in a car accident caused by him. After watching his best friend burn to death he is tormented by reality and constantly has bad reams about his death. The only comfort that he has is with his girlfriend Kiesha and when he is talking to his little brother Monty. But because of the way that he is acting and trying to bring attention to him his girlfriend leaves him. After finding no one to talk to for a while he is overwhelmed with depression and shoots himself in the head. After when his brother gets home from school he notices blood dropping from the ceiling and a puddle of blood leading from the second story. When his mother goes upstairs she finds him with a shot gun in his hand and his head blown to pieces.
This book is written all in dialogue by the author Sharon M. Draper so I think it is better because you can find out more about the charters life and what they feel and think. Reading this book made me think about what I would do if one of my closest friends died and it made me think about the people that kill themselves because of depression and how depressed they have to be to just solve the problem by ending there lives. This author has written many more books about people like this, and has a collection of books called the Hazelwood high. I am planning on reading more books by this author to see how they compare to this best seller.
AMAZING.......2007-04-08
I read Tears of A Tiger in one day!! I love this book so much. This is a really sad book and it basically made me cry. Its about Andy,a guy who lost his best friend in an accident and took the blame for it. He felt really depressed for months until something bad happened to him(sorry won't say...to good to say...gotta read it to find out). But this is one of my favorites.. and I would read it all over again...I'll never forget this book for as long as I live.
Daughter loved the book.......2007-03-09
My daughter loved this book. Anything that can get her to read is alright with me.

Sharon Draper has indeed forged a fiery name for herself in the field of young adult literature--that of a courageous writer, willing to tackle tough, real-life problems while developing honorable, streetwise role models for troubled teens. Her previous novel, Tears of the Tiger, garnered much acclaim and became the first recipient of the Coretta Scott King Genesis Award. In this second novel, Draper weaves in characters from Tears--most significantly Gerald Nickleby, a young basketball player who discovers his innate strength and determination while protecting his stepsister's safety and his mother's honor.
Unfortunately, Draper's strengths (her desire to delve into tough social issues, such as child abuse, drug addiction, incest, bulimia, and domestic violence) become this book's weakness as the story line teeters on implausible. For example, in less than 20 pages Gerald faces the following: the death of a close friend (a passenger in a car that was driven by a drunk teammate); the discovery of his drunk, evil stepfather trying to sexually assault his younger stepsister; a brutal attack by his stepfather; and a raging apartment fire that threatens to kill them all. Nonetheless, Draper creates believable and important heroes for teenage boys--those who are forged from adversity, only to burn more brightly and courageous. (Ages 12 and older) --Gail Hudson
Book Description
Will Gerald find the courage to stand up to his stepfather?
When his loving aunt dies, Gerald suddenly is thrust into a new home filled with anger and abuse. A brutal stepfather with a flaming temper and an evil secret makes Gerald miserable, and the only light in his grim life is Angel, his young stepsister. Gerald and Angel grow close as he strives to protect her from Jordan, his abusive stepfather, and from their substance-addicted mother. But Gerald learns, painfully, that his post can't be extinguished, and that he must be strong enough to face Jordan in a final confrontation, once and for all....

Hard to put down! Even if you don't like to read, it's an interesting story.
Forged By Fire.......2007-02-13
Forged By Fire by Sharon M. Draper is about a teenager Gerald and his little sister Angel, making it through life the "uneasy way." The book first talks about Gerald living with is mother Monique. His mother during that time was on drugs and wasn't taking care of herself nor Gerald. Gerald then goes to live with his Aunt Queen until his ninth birthday where she dies and Gerald has to now go and live with is mother, his sister Angel, and his mother's boy friend,Jordan. Jordan is very abusive to Monique, Angel, and Gerald himself. Jordan also sexually assaults Angel. Now Gerald and Angel is forced to make it through life watching out for each other and watching for Jordan! Monique will not listen to her two children because she is "sprung" on Jordan and she doesn't want to except the idea of what kind of man Jordan really is. I rate this book a four star because it is a realistic fiction book and the style of the writing catches my attention every mintute. I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a good book to read especially if it's realistic fiction.
Forged by Fire by Conner Witsken.......2006-12-22
Forged by Fire by Sharon Draper shows the story of a kid that has to deal with his problems and the problems of people around him. It is about a kid standing up to his abusive stepfather and protecting his family from his abusive stepfather.
When Gerald's mom (Monique) gets sent to prison for drug abuse, Gerald goes to live with his Aunt Queen in Cincinnati. Suddenly, Aunt Queen dies and Gerald has to go live with Monique since she was released from prison. He is now living with his Mom, His sister (Angel), which he didn't even know he had, and his stepfather (Jordan).
Gerald finds out that Jordan is an alcoholic. Every time Jordan got drunk, he would abuse Angel, Gerald, and Monique. Gerald just knew he had to do something about it. Therefore, one day he got the police to arrest Jordan because he was molesting Angel. They were having a good life without Jordan. When Jordan got out of prison he was acting extremely nice, but Gerald knew something was going to happen. The problem is going to be fixed for the last time.
I recommend this book to kids between the ages of 10-15. It shows hatred, sadness, and emotion. The emotion in this book is just incredible.
For anyone who likes adventure and "edge of the seat" books, you will love this book. In addition, you will like it if you have already read one of the "Hazelwood High Series" and liked it.
Forged By Fire by Joey Devlin.......2006-12-22
When Gerald's aunt dies unexpectedly, he is put into a completely new life where he is terrified to wake up every morning. Once his Mom comes back into his life, she surprises him with a new stepfather and stepsister. When he stares in the mirror every day, he sees the bruises that his stepfather has given to him from beating him.
In Gerald's horrible new life, all he has to cheer him up is his sunshine, his beautiful little sister Angel. When Gerald is done with dealing with what his stepfather does to his sister, he leaves to find a close friend, Mr. Washington, to talk to him about it. On the day of the court case thoughts rushed through Gerald and Angel's minds like a New York City traffic jam. After the trial was over, he was sentenced to six months in prison.
This book is great and I recommend it for anyone from the ages of 8-15. This book is not always happy, but overall it is an exceptionally well-written story. Sharon M. Draper really makes me appreciate the parents I have, and that they care about me and don't harm me. It's also a very exciting story though it is awfully sad. The way Draper writes this novel it made me feel like I want to cry. It is a very emotionally written story. She really touched the soft side of me when she wrote this book.

As much as 10% of the American economy, and perhaps more, is comprised of illegal "underground" enterprises, according to author and Atlantic Monthly correspondent Eric Schlosser. And while this segment is never discussed in the newspaper business pages, Schlosser tackles it with the same in-depth analysis and compulsive readability that made his Fast Food Nation a best seller. Reefer Madness spotlights marijuana, migrant labor, and pornography, three of the most thriving black market industries, and analyzes the often-tenuous place each holds in society as a whole. While each of the three could be the subject of its own book, Schlosser keeps his scope narrow by concentrating on the lives of the participants in the underground economy, especially Mark Young, an Indiana man given a life sentence for participating in a marijuana sale, and Ohio porn magnate Reuben Sturman. At just 21 pages, the treatment of migrant laborers in the California strawberry fields is dealt with more briefly but is just as compelling thanks to the first-person narrative of Schlosser's investigation. In telling these stories, which are both personal and universal, Schlosser deftly explores the manner in which his subjects are treated (and punished) compared to others in more above-ground ventures. Along the way, he asks hard questions as to what that treatment says about America. Schlosser writing is passionately opinionated, but this is no mere opinion piece: his perspective is amply supported by extensive research and clearly reasoned interpretation of data. His direct and forceful writing style makes the impact greater still. After reading Reefer Madness, readers are likely to be shocked, appalled, and flat-out bewildered by what's happening in the cracks and crevices of American business. --John Moe
Book Description
America's black market is much larger than we realize, and it affects us all deeply, whether or not we smoke pot, rent a risqu video, or pay our kids" nannies in cash. In Reefer Madness the best-selling author of Fast Food Nation turns his exacting eye on the underbelly of the American marketplace and its far-reaching influence on our society. Exposing three American mainstays pot, porn, and illegal immigrants Eric Schlosser shows how the black market has burgeoned over the past several decades. He also draws compelling parallels between underground and overground: how tycoons and gangsters rise and fall, how new techonology shapes a market, how government intervention can reinvigorate black markets as well as mainstream ones, and how big business learns and profits from the underground. Reefer Madness is a powerful investigation that illuminates the shadow economy and the culture that casts that shadow.
Customer Reviews:
Reefer Madness - A Must Read.......2007-04-23
Reefer Madness is divided into three chapters. The first is about marijuana, the second is about cheap labor with illegal immigrants and the third is on [....]. The author writes this book based on the United States "black market". He gives somewhat of a biography on these 3 topics, which I feel is helpful for those, like myself, who are not aware of their history.
The first chapter is focused on marijuana. Schlosser provides interviews with many people who have had encounters with marijuana. Living in California, I have found it amazing to hear the penalties for marijuana use in other states. In chapter one for example, a man was arrested for possesion of 1.6 grams of marijuana, enough for a large joint. Living in Michigan, he received 14 months in jail. The second section is focused on cheap labor, or illegal immigrants in Guadalupe, California. Schlosser focuses on harvesting strawberries:the difficulty of it and hard labor that is being underpaid. The third and final section was the longest of the three. It focused on an underground [...] king Reuben Sturman.
I very muched enjoyed reading this book. If you liked Fast Food Nation, than Reefer Madness is a must read.
Don't Judge the Book By The Title!.......2007-04-16
"Reefer Madness", by Eric Schlosser is written in three main sections. There is a section on the underground marijuana trade, the migrant labor trade and the porn industry.
Unlike many reviewers, I think the author made a wonderful point. All three activities are illegal, yet they thrive and produce copious amounts of profits for the people involved. Often that profit is taken at the expense of the workers, and they do not share in this bounty. His theme is that if these activities were legalized, or regulated, they would produce income for the country at little harm to society.
I do think the author made a mistake in incorporating the three subjects together in the same book. While well written, the thread that holds the three together in tenuous, at best, and he would have made a better choice by examining each of the subjects, in more detail, in separate books. That is the reason I gave the book only three stars.
The writing is clear, and the research is unmistakably that of Eric Schlosser. I would recommend the book if you want to learn more abut each of these underground activates or if you are a fan of the author. It is also a good boo to be used to stir up discussion on any of the three subjects, or all three at once.
What an eye opener.......2007-01-10
This book makes some really great points about the underground economy and how much it affects this country.
Fascinating.......2006-11-30
Don't be fooled by the title. This is not some hippie counter culture drug book. It is a beautifully written scholarly examination of the underbelly of the American Society.
The main theme of the book is centered around the underground economy. The author argues, by examining the underground economy of any society, one can see a more accurate and telling picture of the society as a whole. Just as individuals have public and private personas that are often in conflict, so can a society. The book focuses on the American culture and legal system.
It is broken up into three essays: first an examination of the history of marijuana use and the war on drugs; second, an examination of the treatment of migrant workers; finally, an examination of pornography and obscenity laws.
The threads tying these seemingly disparate subjects are sometimes blatant, sometimes subtle, but always telling. By examining how the American society deals with these issues, one can draw clear corollaries to better understand how we deal with other controversial issues facing our nation including abortion, abuse of government powers, privacy, the war, etc.. It is the examination of the rationality (or lack there of) of our policies regarding these three topics, and the ethics with which those policies are implemented, that we are left with a scathing commentary on the seemingly schizophrenic nature of the American culture and value system.
Putting a magnifying glass up to American society........2006-06-11
What are three of the perpetual hot button issues of 21st century American politics? Commercialized sex, illegal drugs and cheap labor would probably common choices of many citizens. Eric Schlosser examines the magnitude, origins, visibility, commonality and manifestations of these three mainstays of the American scene.
The book is divided into three chapters, each dedicated to one of these hot-button topics. The chapter on commercialized sex examines the history of prostitution, pornography, and the recent spread of nudie bars and topless bars in the USA over the last 100 years plus. Schlosser examines the origins of peep shows, the first girlie magazines pre-Cold War, goes over the founding of Playboy and Penthouse, and the current spread of pornography over the Internet. The chapter on drugs examines the history of marijuana primarily, with some side notes on the meth plague, cocaine, and other drugs to have swept thru the American street scene. The chapter on cheap labor examines migrant and illegal labor including child labor and sweathouse labor. Both industrial and agricultural labor are included. This chapter is a natural extension of Schlosser's first book: Fast Food Nation, in that it covers the practices of slaughterhouses and farms, and extends into factories not related to food.
Overall, a good book and worthy reading. Anyone in high school or above should find this book accessible, and enjoyable.

Omamori - A second reading.......2006-09-27
This novel was written I believe in 1988. As it says in the back of the book, it took the author 7 years to write it. Much like Gone With The Wind, it came across to me as a once in a lifetime book and I guess this author has not written anything since. A real shame. As my title said, this was my second reading of this novel. The first perhaps at least 15 years ago. I think I even liked it more the second time. I read mostly at lunch time and while waiting for traffic to pass, so that I can get home as fast as possible. For this novel however, I kept on sneaking just another paragraph or two in between sales calls all day long and many times I had to reach for the hankerchief to wipe my eyes. I happen to love multi generational novels that take 30 to 100 years to play out such as Jeffrey Archer's "As the Crow Flies". This novel which starts in 1871 japan and goes to the end of WWII has everything that you would ever want in a novel. I would have to rate it as one of the best books that I have ever read. If you can find a copy buy it without haste.
Gripping and historic.......2003-11-29
I am very picky about what I read and only "go" into a storyline if it will increase my knowledge and thoroughly entertain me. This book did an exceptional job of both. I read Omamori about 5 years ago and picked it up again because I was out of good things to read (imagine that!). I knew very little about the effects of the war on Japan and loved "being there".
Whenever someone tells me they are in a reading, author or genre slump, I suggest this book. It is the best time I have ever had reading.
Omamori.......2003-06-24
This book was purchased for me by my DH. It is the best book I have ever read. The contents are historical and Richard must have done a tremendous amount of research in order to write this book. I could not put it down. I would highly recommend it.
Amazing.......2003-06-17
This is my favorite book of all time. I borrowed it from a friend and read it years ago. I absolutely loved it, but a good friend always returns borrowed books! When I tried to buy it myself, I was told it was out of print. I was thinking about it recently and realized that I could probably find it on this site. Duh!!! Well, I just ordered it and cannot wait to receive and read it all over again and lend it to people who I know will appreciate it.
It's not just a story about love, it's about family, honor, sacrifice, friendship, culture and of course WWII from many different perspectives. I learned a lot, I laughed, I loved and I cried and when I was finished with this book, even though the ending was as happy as it could have been, I felt like I was losing my best friend. I remember when I was finished, I just sat in my room holding the book, silent in thought for almost an hour. Strange. It is a must read!!
Japan, a culture, a history, a love's tragedy.......2000-10-05
I'm from Spain, so I read the book traslate to my languaje. That's no give me a good reality of the book, but buy it was my best idea. It've all for the lovers of japan culture and its peoples, in a dark time from the occidental culture. Richard McGill write like a big master.

The torture and hell of adolescence has rarely been captured as clearly as it is in this classic diary by an anonymous, addicted teen. Lonely, awkward, and under extreme pressure from her "perfect" parents, "Anonymous" swings madly between optimism and despair. When one of her new friends spikes her drink with LSD, this diarist begins a frightening journey into darkness. The drugs take the edge off her loneliness and self-hate, but they also turn her life into a nightmare of exalting highs and excruciating lows. Although there is still some question as to whether this diary is real or fictional, there is no question that it has made a profound impact on millions of readers during the more than 25 years it has been in print. Despite a few dated references to hippies and some expired slang, Go Ask Alice still offers a jolting chronicle of a teenager's life spinning out of control.

A misleading blah........2007-09-29
I read this book twice- at the age of about 16, and now, three years later. All I remembered from reading it for the first time was that I got mildly scared of peanut brittles (*the peanut brittle is spiked with acid at the end of the story, which Alice then ingests by accident and has the worst trip of her life*) and fate. I also for some reason was thinking that Alice was mostly on meth the whole time- until reading the book again today. What I hate most about it now is a complete misleading about drugs: basically mixing them all up in the same pile and labeling as "BAAAAD STUFF". Yeah, the book kinda describes the LSD giving you "trips" and hallucinations, and amphetamines making you "go faster", etc, but it labels all drugs as equally dangerous, addictive and violent. This is so not true! LSD, for example, is not addictive (no more than internet, speaking of psychologicall addiction); you cannot overdose on it, unless you eat like a whole pound of the stuff; life without it does not seem "dull and pointless", and it is relatively safe, if used properly. (The extremely bad, skin-tearing trip Alice had at the end of her diary does not seem realistic. The author tries to pull it off with killing both of Alice's grandparents, to induce stress for her, but still, the whole thing is way over the top. It looks much more like tortures of a heavy crystal meth addict.) Then, while marijuana is relatively addictive, using it does not lead to unpredictable, regrettable consequences, such as casual and unprotected sex with unknown people. Then, how come Alice gets "addicted" to acid, but not to heroin or other heavier drugs? That would make SO much more sense!
Another annoying aspect of the book is the old lady trying to sound like a teen. "Yes, yes, yes!" and "horrid, terrible awful" are the two basic moods for all the journal entries. The girl is either super happy or extemely sad and angry; rarely there's something in between- unrealistic! Then, what kind of real teenager would repeat, for example the word "glad" four times in a row in her diary? Also, REAL girls would focus somewhat more on defining ALL their problems (including grades, gossip, boys, etc), and somewhat less on a) repeating words/thoughts/phrases over and over (come on, it is WRITTEN DOWN, she's not just SPEAKING it!); and b) jotting down all insignificant details such as "we spent the whole evening decorating the stereo in such-and-such particular way". I mean, who cares? Also, REAL girls would probably not ever mention that someone raped them (or if they have the guts to, it would spill over many pages). Just think logically, what kind of girl would want to reread her diary and see an entry that goes somewhat like this: "Today was the worst day of my life. I got raped".
Well, anyways, my two cents are in for this book, and my two stars are all I am willing to give to it (one for good intentions, and one for being quite realistic from time to time). I'd say its worth your time and money (if you can find one for 50 cents, and since it will take you only about a hour to finish up the whole thing). As for the correct drug education, go watch "Requiem for a Dream" or read Erowid (real drug experiences by real people), and don't let yourself be mislead!
I DONT THINK I WANNA ASK ALICE.......2007-09-14
OKAY SO I HEARD THE NAME OF THIS BOOK ALOT AND I READ THE REVIEWS AND EVERYTHING BEFORE I READ IT....BUT MAYBE I SHOULD HAVE READ CRANK AFTER I READ THIS BOOK BECAUSE THE STORY IT SELF WAS GOOD AND I FELT SORRY FOR HER BUT THE BOOK WAS A REAL BORE AND I NEVER REALLY SAID THAT ABOUT ANY BOOK I EVER READ BUT IT GOT TO POINTS WHERE THE BOOK WAS REALLLLY BORING BUT THERE WERE EXCITING PARTS OF THE BOOK AND THEY DIDNT LAST VERY LONG... BUT I HAD TO MAKE MYSELF KEEP READING BECAUSE I NEVER QUIT ON A BOOK.....BUT HER STORY ITSELF WAS GOOD AND SOME TERRIBLE THINGS HAPPENED TO HER BUT IT DIDNT KEEP MY FULL ATTENTION
Mildly Entertaining / Teaches Some Good Morals.......2007-09-07
This is about a young girl and her tragic experiences with drugs. It teaches some helpful morals. The 'editor' claims that this a real life diary, but both internal and external evidence shows this is more likely a fabrication. I'm sure, though, that it wouldn't be too hard to find a real life situation that turned out just as tragic. Judged as a work of fiction, this book contains a rather weak ending (the conclusion depends too much on inference). It is also rather "graphic" for typical moralistic fiction.
*SPOILER* Not as Good as I Thought.........2007-07-06
(Note that this is the daughter of the person who owns this user account)
Let's just say two things - "Crank" was better, and this book has 214 pages in it and it got boring on page 114.
It has a bunch of twists and turns - first shes happy, then shes sad, then happy, then sad, then happy but gets tricked in taking LSD (again) by eating peanuts in a random persons home? Seriously.. and then she gets sent into a mental institution just for having bad hallucinations. Then she's home again and every thing's just peachy .. and then she dies? No sense at all. Read "CRANK"!!!! It is SOOOO much better!!
go ask alice .......2007-05-24
when i read the book go aks alice i thoughtnit was great. i would recomend this book to most people but i really think this book is more of a teenager thing than an adult book.that is beacuse this book talks about all the struggles and pressures that teenagers go through.also,it is a real diary that someone wrote so all of the actions she talks about are non-fiction and actually happend.i really belive that this book is awesome becaue of three resons.
1)she is a real person with real problems
2)she is very vivid in her diary and it gives so much info and details
3)she talks about how people start just a little bit of drugs the get adicted to it later on and then cants stop.
so i hope after reading this i hope u decide to read Go Ask Alice by anonymous.
i promise you one thing you wont be able to put this book down untill you finish it.
thank you for your time

Book Description
Spenser earned his degree in the school of hard knocks, so he is ready when a Boston university hires him to recover a rare, stolen manuscript. He is hardly surpised that his only clue is a radical student with four bullets in his chest.
The cops are ready to throw the book at the pretty blond coed whose prints are all over the murder weapon but Spenser knows there are no easy answers. He tackles some very heavy homework and knows that if he doesn't finish his assignment soon, he could end up marked "D" -- for dead.
"Spenser is Boston's answer to James Bond -- irreverent, witty, worldy. His first-person recital of his detective work makes for fast, amusing reading." (The Pittsburgh Press)
Customer Reviews:
Great Start.......2007-09-28
This is where Spenser starts and it is perfect. The story, the character and the ending. If you are a Spenser or Parker fan here are the roots. Good Book.
Quick & Fun.......2007-05-12
I spent a couple years gradually acquiring all the books in the Spenser series and now it pays off - I get to begin reading them! I finished off "The Godwulf Manuscript" over a couple evenings at work between calls. Spenser is your typical wise-cracking, hard-drinking, womanizing gumshoe in this first book in the Spenser series. Written and set in the early 1970s, it is a mirror on that time. Students frequently are part of radical, left-wing groups; lots of pot going around, everyone is wearing flares, etc.
Spenser is originally hired by the university to find The Godwulf Manuscript. One of his leads brings him to Terry Orchard, a troubled girl who was raised in wealth and now is a member of SCACE, a left-wing student group. He believes she might have information on who stole the manuscript. Later that night, he receives a call from her asking for help - he arrives to find her over the dead body of her boyfriend and obviously extremely high on something. So now he also has to try to prove that Terry Orchard has been set up.
His investigations take him to some strange places, including the apartment of a group called Ceremony of Moloch - at which place he has to once again rescue Terry.
This is a fun and quick read for anyone who likes the detective genre. Give Parker's Spenser series a try!
Promise but no punch........2007-05-09
This is the first of Robert Parker's books that I've read, and were it not for the general raves by Parker fans and the continued popularity of the Spenser character I might not be willing to read further into the series. Stylistically, I'd say the work is embryonic (at least I hope so), and the plot & characterization simply have nothing new to add to the detective fiction genre. I'm told that Spenser is quite the wit but that must develop in future books because although he occasionally has the witty quip here, there was nothing that really made me sit up and take notice. But I did pick up a copy of 'God Save the Child,' and I'm hoping for something more substantial as I read further.
Going back for a second read - this time as an audiobook.......2007-01-06
I've long since read all of the older Spenser novels (and when a new one comes out I snap it up right away) but I am enjoying a second time around with the older ones as audiobooks - I listen while commuting.
The Godwulf Manuscript is the first in a very long line of Spenser novels. The most essential parts of Spenser are here - wisecracks, details about cooking, his mostly unused office and a healthy interest in the opposite sex, Lt. Quirk (I'd forgotten he was Spenser's first "buddy" in a long line of buddies) and Spenser's self-depricating inner voice.
The Godwulf Manuscript is a much more "noire" style book than most of the rest of them - but then again it's not much of a surprise really - authors change over time.
Spenser, however, does not change. The book is set in 1973 and Spenser is 37 years old. He makes more references to feeling the effects of age in this book than I ever remember throughout the rest of the series.Yet, Spenser remains ageless, like James Bond, which is good - otherwise the last Spenser book would have featured a 70 year old Spenser. While it might have been interesting, I like the ageless (or very slowly aging )Spenser better.
The audiobook was well-read, although the product description is misleading. It is not a 6 hour read. It would be more accurate to call it a 5 hour and 15 minute read.
I give this one an A.
The Beginning: Raw, with Signs of Promise.......2006-10-19
As with any other Spencer novel, "Manuscript," the first, is fun, uncomplicated, and a quick read. The plot is a little goofy, in that a rare manuscript is stolen and held for ransom from a Boston-area university as an indirect effect of a professor's dangerous liaison with a wayward and impressionable student. It sets a nice backdrop, however, against which to introduce the private investigating hero of the entire series, to hint at his failings and strengths. His cockiness and irreverence are quickly apparent and add flair to what otherwise might be formulaic.
Anything "Manuscript" lacks in polish it makes up for in promise. It the seeds and signs of the Spencer formula to come (he is handy with his fists, he likes to cook, is a snappy dresser), but is missing many of the familiar elements of the other novels. There is no Hawk and no Susan; Spencer is sloppier about what he eats and how often he works out; and while his attitude towards ladies isn't exactly insensitive, let's just say he isn't concerned about the appropriateness of availing himself of women (a mother and daughter team, no less) who might be desirous more due to vulnerability and despondency than actual attraction.
A real fun aspect of this novel is the glimpse it offers into the early 70s (when this was written, although it feels earlier): everyone smokes, especially at work; problems are aided by a shot of whiskey, especially at work; and women are meant to be protected first and hit on second. It feels especially dated when Spencer drops references in his metaphors. The book is a real throwback to the pulp fiction elements that seem cliched by today's standards: mafia guys who clean their fingernails with stilettos and who are named Sonny; "get in the back of the car" moments; and roughing people up to get confessions out of them. It's great fun, but don't look for any heavy lifting.

FIRST OFF, when i first thought about reading this book. i didnt think it would be good but Donald goines made what urban lit is today he started hood books the way he went about writing this book still is amazing. it shows just how much a girl will do to make her dude like her or vise versa hands down a 5 star book. yall gotta read it
An Overall Disappointment.......2007-01-23
I have seen from reading a number of Donald Goines reviews on this site and from hearing the praises from others; that Donald Goines has a large number of fans. This book also appears to be one of his most popular ones. Unfortunately for me at least, I thought this book was not very interesting. The story telling was nothing spectular when it's all said and done.
The beginning of the novel had me completely wrapped up in the story. I was literally scared as Goines described the female character's descent into full-blown addiction. I had never been so emotionally disturbed by anything I've read as much as I was by this. But after that portion of the book, it became very boring and seemed like Goines tried to use a lot of shock value throughout the rest of the book; but lacked any commendable writing. The latter parts of the book describe very sick episodes, but the writing is near poor.
This was the second book I've read by Donald Goines, the first being Black Gangster, an even more boring book. I'm afraid I may be done reading anymore of his efforts.
You never know!.......2007-01-11
This book was crazy!!! I couldnt put it down. If your from the streets you will easily relate to the book. Its a real look into the world of a true heroin addict. The moral of the story is dont even start.
Kinda Grody.......2006-12-16
This book was a big hit in the drug treatment center where I teach. However, I could not get past the first chapter, as it was really graphic and upsetting, to me. Of course, I want my students to read, but I think I may have just been encouraging most of them to mentally relapse. I don't know what to think, but I won't be reading this book any time soon. Sorry!
The final scene is the deepest experience I have ever had in a book........2006-06-10
Donald Goines is one of my favorite authors of all time. The brotha knows how to bring reality to a novel. I have read all 16 of his books and his biography by Eddie Stone. All of the books were very real, but Dopefiend is the hardest book I have ever read in my life. The first few chapters are harder than any book I have ever read. The book keeps the pressure on and just when you think it can't get any deeper, comes that ending scene where the young woman walks into her friend's (the hooker) room. I would love to see this book made into a movie but unfortunately they would rape it. This is one of those books that is too hard for the big screen. And they would never do that ending scene not in a million years. I had all of his books but these books are meant to be shared and I have lent them all out and never got them back. I will be building up my collection for my soon who is six months old now.
Finally this book should be required reading for so called drug preventative courses.
