Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book on Zero Quality Control.......2006-03-24

The author has really shown the way to achieve zero defect through best method of quality control. The idea implementation of source inspection, self checks and successive checks and their result is really impressive. Various method shown to eliminate various errors and defects during manufacturing provides the eye-opening to people who want to acheive zero defects with zero quality control.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as Shingo's SMED, but.............2006-02-08

Book info : I read the 1st English edition that was published in 1986.
Pre required knowledge: None
Purchased price : USD 29,99
General : The book is easy to read, in occasion the book is repeating itself and the 1st chapter is a copy from Shingo's book on SMED.

Book content:
The book is basically divided into 2 parts. Part 1 (46% of book content) handles all the theory on processes, operations and the different kind of inspections. Then the book moves on to Quality Control, Statistical Quality Control and Zero Quality Control with the explanation of how this can be achieved by Poka-Yoke devices. The 2nd part of the book handles examples of Poka-yoke systems and more information on the author. Because of the age of the book some of the ideas are still good but the solutions are outdated.

It is a good book; but I was a bit disappointed after reading Shingo's book on SMED. Maybe were my expectations to high, if you are able to purchase this book for a reasonable price I recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars Master piece, but..........2005-09-18

The book can be divided into two parts:
1-st: theory, philosophy of Zero Quality Control; this part is well written, gives you power to act.
2-nd: samples of POKA YOKE; this part you can omit unless you will find similar problem that has been solved - old equipment, poor pictures and drawings.
From my experience - use wisdom from the first part of that book to explain to your collegues "WHY USE POKA YOKE?", then they will find the technical solutions.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book on making 100% inspection affordable.......2003-10-12

This is an excellent book on reducing the cost of 100% inspection so that product quality can be assured. The book is clearly written, filled with useful examples, and very well translated. This book does not deal specifically with methods of reducing the cost of inspecting precision parts. Most of the examples describe methods of assuring that assemblies are put together properly, by making incorrect assembly virtually impossible.

5 out of 5 stars Learning from the master.......2002-07-10

Mr Shingo was the technical man behind Mr Ohno who was the manager in the implementation of the Toyota production system. He defined the how to methods of SMED and 0 defects Quality that support the non stock production system. This book is of the type for the hands on engineer who wants to understand and implement the concepts, directly from their creator.

Book Description

The forces that shape America's most powerful consumer agency
Because of the importance of what it regulates, the FDA comes under tremendous political, industry, and consumer pressure. But the pressure goes far beyond the ordinary lobbying of Washington trade groups. Its mandate-one quarter of the national economy-brings the FDA into the middle of some of the most important and contentious issues of modern society. From "designer" babies and abortion to the price of prescription drugs and the role of government itself, Inside the FDA takes readers on an intriguing journey into the world of today's most powerful consumer agency.
In a time when companies continue to accuse the FDA of nitpicking and needlessly delaying needed new drugs, and consumers are convinced that the agency bends to industry pressure by rushing unsafe drugs to market, Inside the FDA digs deep to reveal the truth. Through scores of interviews and real-world stories, Hawthorne also shows how and why the agency makes some of its most controversial decisions as well as how its recent reaction to certain issues-including the revolutionary cancer drug Erbitux, stem cell research, and bioengineering of food-may jeopardize its ability to keep up with future scientific developments.
Inside the FDA takes a closer look at the practices, people, and politics of this crucial watchdog in light of the competing pressures and trends of modern society, revealing what the FDA is supposed to do, what it actually does-and fails to do-who it influences, and how it could better fulfill its mandate. The decisions that the FDA makes are literally life and death. Inside the FDA provides a sophisticated account of how this vitally important agency struggles to balance bureaucracy and politics with its overriding mission to promote the country's health.
Fran Hawthorne (New York, NY) is a senior contributing editor of Institutional Investor and has connections deep within the business and finance communities. Hawthorne has been covering healthcare and business for more than twenty years for such publications as Fortune, BusinessWeek, and Crain's New York Business. She is the author of The Merck Druggernaut (cloth: 0-471-22878-8; paper: 0-471-67906-2).

4 out of 5 stars Highly Informative (and Neutral) Look at the FDA.......2007-08-08

Democrats want more Big Pharma regulation and consumer protection. Republicans want to protect Big Pharma's profits. The tobacco and diet supplement industries want to be left the hell alone. And consumers want miracle drugs for free. Somehow, some way, the FDA navigates the minefields of the food and drug industries every day and tries to base its decisions on science. While some authors take cracks at the FDA because of a political agenda, Fran Hawthorne remains neutral and thus provides the most level-headed look at the FDA that's on the shelves. While the reading is pretty dense, this is a book that every concerned citizen needs to read.

3 out of 5 stars If you want to know about an administration that controls a third of our economy, this is the first step........2007-08-03

If you know nothing of the FDA, than this will blow your mind. By the time you are through half the book you will be considered an expert on the subject by all your friends.

Not one of the more exciting reads, but extremely informative. Not just about what you might think it is about, but much much more. This book will give a clearer view of where we all live.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting look at an important regulatory body.......2006-12-20

For those who have ever wondered how the FDA makes decisions and how those decisions effect companies this is a great starting point. Hawthorne takes an objective stance towards the FDA and shows their faults along with the positives. She tracks several instances of FDA oversight and gives their results. I think the part that tracks the companies progress through the FDA's is the most instructive. One of my fields of study was health and pharmaceutical economics and this was a great way to start learning about the FDA.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating, Informative Look at Food & Drug Administration.......2005-05-28

"Inside the FDA" is a thoughtful, balanced, and well-researched look inside the controversial and troubled Food and Drug Administration. Author Fran Hawthorne is an experienced business journalist and her skills are evident here.

Digging into the FDA's complex and conflicting world, the book provides an informative picture of FDA's bureaucratic, political, and scientific drivers. Ms. Hawthorne does an excellent job of laying out what the FDA is suppose to do, what is really does, and where and why it fails.

It makes for a great read.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing book, although it misses one key insight.......2005-05-07

Far better and more balanced than any book to date on the subject. The book does an amazing job explaining the external forces tugging in all directions at the FDA without those shrill calls for "reform" made by so-called public interests like CSPI or misguided lawmakers like Hinchey out of NY.

The only thing missing from the analysis are the internal forces. FDA attitudes are very much related to the belief system of the staff and the culture fostered by the institution.

If you've ever been on the receiving end of an FDA action, you know the prevailing culture inside the FDA views the entire industry as the police view criminals. The FDA often seems to doubt every iota of data, question every motive and act as if the administrative procedures which insure fairness are somehow boundaries on a power they believe should be limitless. Many parts of the FDA are an "end-justifies-the-means" culture. Staff who don't toe the line and approach industry with all out animosity and suspicion are often suspect themselves of being deficient in intellect and/or integrity.

The book does a bang up job analyzing external forces. If Ms. Hawthorne actually could have gotten inside the front lines at FDA, she would have had all the facts she needed for a superb analysis.

1 out of 5 stars Do Not Purchase!.......2007-03-31

Do not purchase this book. Buy the 4th edition instead! The verbaige is the same in both editions - almost, if not, identical. The 5th edition changes many of the figures out though - yet leaves the text reflecting the previous figure. If you try to understand by following the figures, your are lost. In many places the referenced dimensions in text are no longer in the figure as they were swapped out. The verbaige is good work. But for those who really want to understand - get the 4th edition. I compared both so that I could learn what I needed to understand. This issue occurs throughout the book, but is really bad throughout the last half of the book - where the subjects get more intense. I was severely disappointed that such distinguished reviewers (listed in preface) could miss so much.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference.......2005-11-17

Though valuable to me as a quality technician, I wish I had this book when I was a machinist.

An excellent reference for Quality Engineers or Technicians.
In addtion to that, this book covers almost everthing you need for ASQ Quality Technician Certification, I think this book is even better than the CQT Primer.

This books goes against the mainstream in England. At this point in time Government and OFSTED are keen on controlling and managing schools and mistrusting teahchers and head teahcers. This books has explored ways of evaluating and valuing what really matters in schools and learning and has developed a range of methods and tools for teachers and schools to use when striving to make their schools even better places for learning. And not only has the author ecplored ways and means he also gives the reader many arguments for whay to listen to the schools themselves: Students, teachers, head teachers and parents. This is a basic book for professionals and stakeholders who want to develop their school.

        Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars I absolutely do NOT recommend this book. Nothing but filler........2005-02-12

The first 120 pages of the book do nothing but drone on and on about why you should get a home inspection done and about the legal liabilities of the inspectors. I think most people who've bought the book have probably already decided to use an inspector and don't need to be told through 120 pages that they should!

Every other page is a reprint of a question that someone had sent him in his newspaper articles and are mostly redundant.

For example, he'll tell you that in most parts of the country Inspectors don't consider swimming pools to be part of the inspection. He'll then use up a full page for a q&a letter that says, "Barry, I recently got an inspection done and the inspector didn't include the swimming pool in the report. Wasn't he supposed to do this?".

I consider all of the Q&A letters to be redundant and insulting my intelligence by assuming I need the point repeated like a preschooler. It is nothing more than filler so that you won't realize you are buying what is essentially a 75 page book that is nothing more than a checklist.

Lastly, once the interesting part of the book commences (the checklist) he puts up pictures of common problems. The problem is that the pictures are black and white and are so small that you can't even see what the problem he's describing in the picture actually looks like!

In short, I think you could find the checklists you need for free on the internet and skip this book. It is nothing like what I expected based on the title.

5 out of 5 stars Thank God for Barry Stone.......2003-11-16

I bought this book to help through the process of buying a home that I had inspected already but felt as if the inspection wasn't accurate. The inspector found barely anything wrong with the 50 year old home I was buying. I was concerend, especially considering the inspector was a personal friend of my real estate agent. I chose this book over others due to Barry's national status as a columnist and after reading it, I hired my own inspector based upon Barry's insights. What I learned about the home in terms of what had not been disclosed to me was enough to consider action against both my agent and home inspector. Above all else, the old furnace was emitting hazardous fumes into the home. Thank God for Barry and this book.

        5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Book.......2003-11-16

I've been reading Barry Stone's columns in my newspaper for years. As an avid investor in residential propoerties, I have followed Barry's advice with pinpoint accuracy as his advice has kept me from making mistakes that would have cost me a fortune.

I bought his book and have found it to be a remarkable warehouse of information that serves to protect both everyone including the buyers, sellers and even the many real estate agents who in my opinion often lead unknowledged comsumers down the path of home purchase without a clue as to how to protect them from buying a home that could be riddled with defects.

I applaud this book and Barry Stone's continued efforts to place into the marketplace the most sound and sane advice I've read from any home inspection manual.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth reading.......2003-03-14

Not a good book to read. There are other books that provide useful information but this book had very little good ideas to use. The price is very but that still just justify spending the time to read it due to the lack of help I got from this book. Get something else and don't waste your money.

5 out of 5 stars Great teaching tool for homeowners.......2003-01-10

Mr. Stone has managed once again to provide the consumer with a wealth of practical knowledge. His easy-going nature and vast experience is translated into a must read for any potential, or current, homeowner as well as anyone in the real estate and inspection professions.

A comprehensive, up-to-the-minute account of bridge management developments for researchers, designers, builders, administrators, and owners

Bridge Management draws on Bojidar Yanev's thirty years of research, teaching, and consulting as well as his management of 800 of New York City's 2,200 bridges. It offers an insider's view of the problems to be resolved in bridge management by civil and transportation engineers, budget and asset managers, abstract analysts, and hands-on field workers.

The personal search of the author for solutions is juxtaposed with an overview of the dynamic interactions between bridge builders and the social and physical forces shaping the transportation infrastructure over the centuries. Bridge Management uniquely integrates the priorities, constraints, objectives, and tastes governing the domains of structural mechanics, economics, public administration, and field operations at both the project and network levels. It features:
          * A review of current bridge management vulnerabilities, objectives, tools, and products
          * Dozens of case studies illustrating the application of analytic models, and practical developments currently shaping the field
          * Unique chapters exploring the evolution of bridge design, construction, and maintenance, from the origins of deliberate planning to the current integrated lifecycle asset management models
