To listen to its proponents, network (or multilevel) marketing is the greatest thing since sliced bread: top performers earn $1 million a month, reside in alluring places like Aspen and Kauai, and still find quality time to happily raise children and lovingly cement spousal relationships. Contending that those who fail to make it that far are ill prepared for the initial challenges they face, Mark Yarnell and Rene Reid Yarnell--married network marketers who are among the industry's leaders, as well as members of a University of Illinois faculty that teaches the only college-certified course on the subject in the U.S.--have written Your First Year in Network Marketing: Overcome Your Fears, Experience Success, and Achieve Your Dreams! to convey both advice and inspiration to newcomers. Peppered with personal anecdotes that bring their recommendations to life, the two offer logical strategies for overcoming rookie obstacles and kick starting a career. Individual chapters explore issues such as battling rejection, avoiding depression, handling prospects, supervising recruits, and managing time. Each concludes with a comprehensive summary, but save it for later reference and don't skip the preceding narrative, or you risk missing the book's considerable motivational component. --Howard Rothman

5 out of 5 stars must have to make a good decision.......2007-10-14

This book gives you the down-low on what to expect in network marketing without making you feel like you don't even want to try. It is very informative and gives lots of real-life examples which ring true to my experiences with network marketing. It is a good balance of realism and optimism; all done with honesty and integrity. Any new network marketer, and even some experienced ones who are struggling, should read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-09-20

This book is really great for someone entering Network Marketing . . Easy to read . .

2 out of 5 stars Same old stuff, different cover............2007-09-16

There are many books like this out there with the methods are out of date. Most successful network marketers build their fortune on the backs of others. There are some new twists on old approaches, the problem with most network marketing, MLM, multilevel marketing methods is the company's business model drives the behavior in the field and turns people into pushy, aggressive sales people, which causes huge failure in the industry.

I only wish that I bought this book 18 months ago when I started with this wonderful MLM company I belong to. The insights of this industry are fully explained in this book along with stories that people in their organization have lived and learned through. Not only is the information useful and ready to be applied to your business but the inspiring stories are true examples that this industry works for those who work it. I absolutely recommend this book to anyone who is starting out in a MLM company and for anyone who is a veteran in MLM. I have recommended this book to my organization and everyone loves this book, too.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Timeless Advice and a Great Help.......2007-08-02

It's incredible how the basic skills learned from Bettger's many examples of his own experiences over 50 years ago still translate today. I highly recommend it for anyone just getting into sales or looking for some ideas to make that light bulb over your head go on. I was really skeptical when someone gave me the book and I saw it was written ages and ages ago, but I remain shocked by how helpful it was.

5 out of 5 stars Begin your Sales Career Here..........2007-07-03

This classic from the 1940s covers all the basics of selling, starting with Chapter 1: Enthusiasm. Dale Carnegie ("How To Win Friends and Influence People") wrote the preface, and Bettger's book is written so well I would not be surprised if Carnegie ghost-wrote the book. Frank Bettger earns our sympathy right off the bat, an average Joe doing average things. When his manager has him start to count his calls and other activity, things start to happen, just as they will in your career if you do the same. This book reads quick, and whether you are selling intangibles (securities, insurance) or tangibles (cars, real estate, etc.) you will benefit.

5 out of 5 stars Timeless Advice You Can Apply Today.......2007-05-29

Frank Bettger's book is a real page turner that's easy to understand. Even better his advice is easily applicable & effective today as it was 60 years ago.

This is a book you should read several times when you receive it & then reread it often through out your career. The tips that lay on these pages will pay the cost back for this book uncountable times over.

5 out of 5 stars An Oldie But A Goodie.......2007-05-15

This book was written over 60 years ago, but the messages on the pages ring loud and clear to sales professionals in today's world. Frank Bettger simply tells his personal story of how he grew his sales career from failure to success....and learned valuable life lessons along the way.

The book does not have the gliz and hype of a Tony Robbins seminar, but it has the power to impact the reader and put one on the path to greatness.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for anyone involved in sales!.......2007-05-09

This book has really great techniques along with excellent real life examples. An extremely valuable book for anyone involved in sales.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars You, Inc.: The Art of Selling More of the Same.......2007-10-16

Please, save yourself the money! You, Inc. is an OK book that covers a lot of basic information for people completely new to sales or a profession/career that does not deal routinely with people. I found the writing style no better than eight grade level. If you want a light read, and one with more humor that you can reference easily, I recommend Jeffrey Gitomer's books over this brochure by Beckwith. Thin self-help books like Beckwith's validate that money can be made by copying every other book on the market, slapping a 'sticky' title on the cover, and adding to the authors growing fortune. Please don't add to his already significant pile.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not great.......2007-10-11

The book wasn't a waste of time. There were keen insights shared. My problem was that you had to turn too many pages to read them. As opposed to books such as Blink, or Made to Stick, this book seemed "cheap." Honestly, I felt like I was reading motivational literature.

4 out of 5 stars kris.......2007-09-22

Good book, with lots of wisdom and forgotten common sense. I enjoyed reading the book - very easy style and got pumped up with energy after reading. Brings to light lots of obvious things in life and business, which we tend to easily forget.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......2007-09-22

Like Beckwith's other books (I've read them all), I really enjoyed it. For me, each book has built on the previous one. I also find Beckwith's books easy to read. It's as if they are written in "bite-size" pieces to be easily digested. :-) Once I get started, I have a hard time putting them down. I read You, Inc. in two sittings. My brain feels like it "ate too much!"

You, Inc. is another book I will highly recommend to my dental colleagues. Well, I've recommended ALL of Beckwith's books to my dentist friends! I think You, Inc. and What Clients Love are particularly well-suited for dentists. Both of them are "chock-full" of pearls. Both are books that should be read multiple times. And, I've used many of Beckwith's concepts in my website and my business.

Between my wife and me, our copy of You, Inc. has virtually doubled in thickness because of all the dog-eared pages. It won't even close normally!

You, Inc. was an outstanding read, and I know I'll be putting some of the ideas to work starting tomorrow!

2 out of 5 stars So so.......2007-09-15

Sorry everybody but I didn't think this book was all that great. There really wasn't anything new in here that I haven't read or heard before. It seems like all books like this have the same ideas but put in someone else's words or through their own stories.

Book Description

Booklist

In this era of entrepreneurialism, Atlanta freelancer Peter Bowerman shows those timid (but talented) souls how almost anyone can forge ahead as an independent writer. His advice is good, couched in brassy prose that is easy to read. He anticipates every conceivable question and issue, including typical charges, marketing oneself, types of available work, and dealing with deadbeats. There are great common-sense tips, too, in the psychology of handling clients who think they're writers, those with limited budgets, and others demanding creativity. Personal anecdotes make the life of the freelancer real; the author includes samples of cold-calling scripts, thank-you notes, and a story or three about starting a writers' group and partnering with other professionals.

Book Description

Dream of being a well-paid freelance writer? Long to carve out an enviable lifestyle with plenty of freedom, flexibility AND healthy income? But wait a minute…aren't the words "starving" and "writer" forever joined at the hip? Not anymore.

How about a writing direction with plenty of work, strong and growing demand for good writers, hourly rates of $50-100+ ($60-75 average) and where all time is billed? No flat fees with vast, open-ended commitments of time. Translation? Less time working to pay bills and more time pursuing your writing passions.

We're talking about freelance commercial writing - writing for business entities, large and small - the subject of The Well-Fed Writer, and quite possibly the answer for all aspiring writers who want to turn their love of writing into their living. The book was a triple-book-club-selection (Book-of-the-Month, Quality Paperback Book and Writer's Digest) and earned several prestigious awards in 2001:

1) Second place in the ForeWord magazine Book of the Year Awards (Career Category)

2) Honorable Mention in the Writer's Digest magazine National Self-Published Book Awards

3) Finalist in the Publisher's Marketing Association Ben Franklin Awards (Best First Book).

Why commercial writing? In the past decade, two huge trends have sculpted the corporate American landscape: downsizing and outsourcing. Corporations are doing more with less: fewer people, less resources and smaller budgets. The workload is growing - especially with the exploding Internet - and many organizations rely heavily on freelancers to help them handle it.

Why do corporations hire freelancers? For good solid economic and creative reasons. With a freelancer, corporations don't have to pay salary, benefits, and vacation time. But they will pay a freelancer $60-80 (average) for their time. In addition, they pay only what they need when they need it. And with a network of freelancers, they get a broad spectrum of fresh talent (hard to get with in-house staff writers used to writing about the same topics day after day) which they can form-fit to their specific writing needs.

What's "commercial writing"? Marketing brochures, ad copy, newsletters, direct mail campaigns, video/CD-ROM scripting, speeches, sales sheets, proposals, web content, and so much more.

Veteran commercial freelancer Bob Bly, known as the freelance writing "guru" for his 35+ writing titles, says of commercial freelancing: "I know of no other arena of writing so lucrative yet so easy to get started in."

The Well-Fed Writer will take you step-by-detailed-step through, indeed, everything you need to know to quickly get your share of this exciting and highly lucrative arena of freelancing.

5 out of 5 stars Step by Step to Success.......2007-09-14

I checked out this book after reading much praise for it every time I searched for it. This is the real deal. I followed Peter's advice and his step by step processes and was earning money from writing within 2 months of reading his book. This is THE book for performing as a commercial writer in the freelance field.

Although I am a novice, I feel that I have a seasoned expert sitting at my side pointing out the pitfalls and steering me in the right direction all along the way. This book is, in a word, fantastic!

Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Roadmap for Success.......2007-08-17

I'm not a freelance writer, but I could be after reading Peter Bowerman's book, "The Well-Fed Writer. This well-written and engaging book is packed with all of the information that you need to gain financial self-sufficiency as a freelance writer. I was amazed at the depth of Bowerman's marketing knowledge and the amount of detail that he included in each chapter. He even had a terrific section on prospecting by phone. This book is a roadmap not only for writers, but for anyone looking to build a successful freelance business.

Cold Calling for Women: Opening Doors & Closing Sales

5 out of 5 stars Bowerman knows his stuff!.......2007-07-04

Make fun of some of his techniques if you will, but this guy knows how to make a SERIOUS business. If you're writing as a hobby, this isn't practical. But if you want to be a REAL professional writer, I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars Go selling.......2007-06-03

There are other reviewers in this section that do a very admirable job of summarizing the contents of this work. The advice is solid. The chapters are well organized. The information is worth many more times than the cost of the book. So, let me get straight to the point. This is a book about selling your writing skills on a commercial basis. That means getting to the people in companies that make the buying decision and getting them to use your talents. It means cold calling, It means contacting 20 or many more for just one assignment and turning that assignment into a client. Premise of the book is very real. You MUST have the ability to sell yourself.

5 out of 5 stars This book changed my life........2007-06-01

You read that right. I'd already been a part-time freelancer for several years, but didn't have the courage to quit my full-time job, even though it was killing me with stress and dissatisfaction. But I kept reading TWFW, and absorbing its wisdom and enthusiasm. I couldn't help thinking, "Hey, this guy isn't even a trained writer, and I am! If he can do it, I can," but still never made the leap. I did, though, follow the author's recommendations to sock away money to tide me over in case I did decide to do it. I also named my business, designed a logo and put together a brochure and a website -- all according to the book's advice -- which I quietly launched six years ago today.

Then one day, my boss made the situation intolerable. I thought over my options during my lunch break, made a few calls to some clients to see how much immediate work I could drum up, and went back to the office. I took a deep breath, thought about all the encouragement in the book, and resigned, agreeing to stay another 3 months to train a successor (I was, at the time, president of an ad & marketing agency).

In those months, I made cold calls (more advice from the book) from my cell phone over my lunch hours, made some more calls into western time zones where the business day was still going on after I got off work, and put more money away. I also purchased the more expensive equipment I'd need -- printer, reliable business-quality phone with headset, etc. -- while I still had a steady paycheck, more advice from the book.

Three months later, I woke up as my own boss and went to work in my home office for the first time as a Full Time Commercial Copywriter. That was in 2001. Last year I celebrated my fifth anniversary, and only one of those 5 years was my business in the red, and that's because my mom died and I was writing a book, which kept me away from the business.

Still, following Bowerman's advice, I maintained phone and email contact with my clients and did manage to get a few jobs completed just so no one worried that I'd fallen off the face of the earth. And when it was all over, I re-read parts of the book to help me get back in the groove and drum up some new business.

I'm sure I would eventually have launched my business without this book, but by then I could very well have been impaired by a heart attack or some other stress-related illness. Maybe I wouldn't even have lived long enough to do it on my own, because it was really, really bad.

Today I celebrate my sixth anniversary as a full time freelance writer, and I'm making a better living -- both satisfaction- and compensation-wise -- than I ever did as a freelancer before. I know that I can continue to get better at my craft and charge accordingly, limited only by my own willingness to work, which I learned from The Well-Fed Writer.

This book gave me hope when I needed it, sound business advice, and the courage to do what I really needed to do, WHEN I really needed to do it. I will be forever grateful.

3 out of 5 stars How to Jump Start Mr. Kamadia's Courses.......2007-06-15

This book had some nuggets of somewhat useful information for cheap marketing ideas. I especially liked the idea of putting your card in books at the bookstore. Enough to justify the price of this book? No, not in my opinion.

His other tips for new loan Officers are to have a Unique Selling Proposition, to stand out from the crowd; have a business plan. Yeah, no duh Kamadia.

The book is filled with self-promotion, which in my opinion lowers the author's credibility.

When day 30 of his 30 Day Mortgage Career Jump Start Campaign is to take his courses, you know something ain't right.

There is a much better book on starting a mortgage career and marketing yourself, for less money. I give this book a 'C'.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth $1, one star is too much. .......2007-06-12

This without a doubt, the worse book on sales I have ever read. The book in my opinion is a con. The author was deceitful. The name of the book, the title of the chapters, implied he was providing marketing ideas on "how" to build your business. But all he did was state the obvious, without not even one example in the entire book of a letter, marketing piece, conversation with a customer, how he built his business. He tells you several times in the book to develop you own marketing plan, where the title of the book implies he would show you one. Oh yeah, he does he refer you several times to other websites to buy more worthless promises.

5 out of 5 stars THIS REALLY WORKS!.......2007-02-13

THIS BOOK HELPED ME UNDERSTAND WHAT I WAS MISSING IN MY BUSINESS. I HAD NO IDEA WHAT BEING SELF EMPLOYED MEANS TO WORK WITH YOURSELF BY BUILDING A BUSINESS PLANS AND FULFILLING GOALS. THE BEST PART OF THIS BOOK IS THE MARKETING TECHNIQUES!

Most people don't choose sales as a career. Sales chooses them--and they end up wondering how to make the most of a profession they were never prepared for.

They don't have to wonder anymore. In THE ACCIDENTAL SALESPERSON, Lytle gives readers the road map for excelling in sales. Lively and entertaining, this somewhat unorthodox guide is packed with thought-provoking axioms, humorous and instructive anecdotes, specific strategies, and powerful tools--everything readers need to master essential lessons in sales and professionalism.

Readers will find there are some things THE ACCIDENTAL SALESPERSON lacks--dull theories, manipulative methods, and high-pressure tactics. But with the wealth of money-generating, career-building techniques it does provide, we don't think those items will be missed.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars I ACTUALLY READ THE BOOK...........2007-10-04

I read this book and can attest that this book is NOT what it seems to be. The reviews claim this to be the best sales book of all time, but these reviews lack capacity in what is acutally contianed in this book.

The book shows you gimmicks and silly methods used for prospecting. The real world deals with professionals. I am a stock broker and would not want to be associated with these type of methods or have them by any means reflect my line of business.

I would recommend two books: 1. "How to Master the Art of Selling" by Tom Hopkins 2. "Advanced Selling Strategies: The Proven System of Sales Ideas, Methods, and Techniques Used by Top Salespeople Everywhere" by Brian Tracy. These are real books with so much information to be absorbed under one read.

I won't lie to you and tell you that one single book outhere is the best. But these two books combined is the best sales modus you will develop.

5 out of 5 stars Shortcut to success.......2007-07-19

This work is intented for those who, as the author (or as me), have been launched towards a profession that could earn your own money but could stress your nervous system. This guide helps you to focus on the right directive without being distracted by jaws-men or uneducated-chieves.
Really dealed just to understand how to move in this sea of difficulties

5 out of 5 stars A Must For Any Salesperson.......2007-07-07

Chris Lytle has put together an excellent process for sales success. While there is little new in sales under the sun, his treatment of the selling process is fresh and very effective.

I've been using his pre-approach letters and his preparation process for sales interviews with solid success. His techniques work!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent investment.......2007-05-11

I have been purchasing this book for my new Sales Reps for the last several years. They always come back and thank me. It helped me tremendously and many others. Each story / example is short but full of insight. Not your typical sales manual.

5 out of 5 stars Down To Earth Guide.......2007-03-17

Chris has put together a practical guide for all sales people. This is a must-read for anyone finding themselves trying to make a living in the world of selling.

5 out of 5 stars very useful.......2007-10-20

this is a very useful book for a visual artist. a great reference to have around.

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful book.......2007-07-28

The book gave me what I needed and that was an approach to marketing to the different markets out there. This included finding galleries and licensing companies and also agents. All in all it filled me in on how to approach these segmented markets. [..]

2 out of 5 stars A bound collection buisness cards.......2007-05-08

This is one of those books with exciting chapter headings like 'the mysterious world of grants' that you expect will de-mystify the process- but basically it is train station schedule telling you about different trains you can board to reach a destination (this book contains no destinations)... what I mean by that is this book is basically a reading list of a million other books. The information that is in this book is very minimal, everytime you think she is about to tell you something valuable she says "to learn more read this book or visit this website". She doesn't provide the information from those books in hers. For a 300 page book, the only meat it provided in and of itself was a soapbox for the author to dog the whole gallery system and encourage artists to sell their own work. Which is lovely but I felt like I wasted time reading her big book when I should have been reading the other books that actually have the information I am looking for in them.
If I was this author and had read all of those books myself, I think I would have written a more comprehensive one-stop guide for the artist to save them some time and energy- but maybe her book was sort of a collaborative effort where she gained something from mentioning these other books as opposed to learning from them. That is really what it felt like- a bound collection of buisness cards.
If you really want to do a lot of reading- this book is certainly a reading list, but I would bypass it and go straight to some other books.

If you DO want to bypass the gallery system and make money off your art on your own, I recommend Brian Marshall White's book 'Breaking into the Art World'. You can read it in one night and use all the info, apply it, start earning some money from your artwork. He not only provides a useful biz plan for the artist, he also includes the numbers of all his sources for printing, packaging, credit card set-up... it is the only book you would need to start making and selling prints of your work.

5 out of 5 stars Cutting through the Hype and Clutter.......2007-04-12

The tone of MS. Michels book is so needed in the professional art world. I have worked in highly political corporate jobs in the past, but have not seen any profession so divide and conquer itself as I have observed in the art world. Not only does this book de-mystify the business side of the Fine Arts and Crafts professions, it is a regular reminder that we artists can be our own worst enemies when we segment ourselves into movements or confuse our desire to live from the proceeds from our work with the fear that money will corrupt our artistic intent. Also thanks for the Internet update in this edition!

5 out of 5 stars If you are in business, then you can't afford not to at least read this book!.......2007-07-22

This is a wonderful book. It is very well written and an easy read. Furthermore, it is full of great content. I highly recommend you take a look at the online listing of this book's Table of Contents and see for yourself what specifically is covered.

This book reminds us to not look too far astray for customers or clients. It's easier to cultivate an existing customer for a new sale than to convince a non-customer to buy from you. And it's easier to have a satisfied customer convince a non-customer to buy from you than you doing it yourself.

Focusing on getting referrals is probably the least expensive way to build a customer-base and sales. Keep in mind that there are at least two methodologies to getting referrals. One is the do-good-work for your customers and clients and to get them to refer you to their family and friends. The other is B2B where you get other businesses that compliment yours to refer work to you. You can pay a referral fee or send them an equal amount of referrals.

Some people are not comfortable with using referrals to build their customer-base. But then some people are not comfortable being self-employed either. If you are one of those people who want to be successful at being self-employed, then take advantage of referrals as much as possible. And a good way to start is probably by getting this book and reading it cover to cover. 5 stars!

5 out of 5 stars Let somebody else do the selling for you .......2006-12-24

Referrals now is an excellent book that explains how to obtain more business by asking for referrals. Most friends and existing clients are more than willing to recommend your product or sevices if you just ask for it. Sales people sometimes view asking for referrals as a sign of weakness or problems in the business. This is not true.

If you want to build up a business very quickly without a lot of overhead, this is the best method. It would be adviseable to first read the book "Masters of Networking" by Ivan R. Misner. Referral business has a lot to do with networking, so you must be ready to do favors for other people who help you out. Forgetting to help somebody else who has helped you will be very detrimental to your business.

Just asking somebody for a referral is not really good enough but asking the person for a personal introduction increases your chances dramatically for closing the deal.

Don't read the book all in one go. Read a chapter, think about how you can apply it, write down what you think is best for you and experiment with it.

I decided to review the library's copy before I bought it and I could not get enough info out of it! I found myself taking notes and almost writing in the library's copy! I rushed and bought the book. Now it's covered in pink and yellow highlighter. I feel like I'm back in college preparing for an exam -- except this time, my studying is going to directly contribute to my bank account! Truly valuable!
