Book Description

In the tradition of A Natural History of the Senses, an esteemed expert in ecopsychology shows how expanding the way we see the natural world can improve the way we relate to it.

In recent years, there has been a surge of interest in the connection between the human psyche and the natural environment. Fueled by a growing awareness of worldwide ecological degradation, an entirely new field of study, called ecopsychology, has emerged. At universities across the country, scientists are learning how the decline of our planet's environment affects not just our physical health but also our minds and emotions.

Laura Sewall, Ph.D., is one of ecopsychology's pioneers and an expert in the study of the visual process. In combining these fields, she has determined that the sense of sight is key to understanding and potentially reversing the effects of ecological destruction. In Sight and Sensibility--the first book on ecopsychology for lay readers--Sewall draws on her fieldwork studying the visual behavior of baboons and teaching vision improvement to trace the evolution of human sight and the cultural development of different ways of seeing. She shows how we can restructure the neural networks that determine how we see, awaken to visual patterns and depth perception, and learn to see more of the world around us.

A contemporary companion to John Berger's classic Ways of Seeing, Sight and Sensibility is a dazzling blend of science, psychology, and poetry.

5 out of 5 stars believing is seeing.......2004-01-21

This book by Laura Sewall remains the single best one-dip immersion into the field and thought of ecopsychology. Over the years I have returned to it time and time again, quoting it in many of my own writings and teachings, and continuing to marvel at its artistic mixing of deep theory with light personal stories. Overall, much more readable than Abrams' text by a long shot. For all these reasons, I was very happy that my publisher Green Frigate Books was able to successfuly ask Ms. Sewall to write one of the front-end blurbs to my recently published book "Profitably Soaked: Thoreau's Engagment with Water" as well as, especially, the Foreword to my recently published "Deep Immersion: The Experience of Water."

Without an understanding of the human experience in the world, our perception is blurred, quite literally it often seems. Sewell explains how our visual and spiritual sight is dulled by modernities and uses this thesis to place human relations to all things. I found her view to be thorough but her exploration limited. What about the other senses? Further, Sewell's mandate for how we treat our environment is appropriate, and she often refers to tribal people, but not once does she refer to the tribal experience. In fact, her lessons are often about the individual experience in nature, as a way to achieve a visionary experience, and I wonder how it is tribal people related to nature: as individuals or as a tribe? Yes, we are fragmented with our surroundings, but with each other as well.

5 out of 5 stars She walks in Beauty..........2000-09-26

Of the many books I have read this long summer, only this one would I call truly beautiful. It is not just a read but an encounter with a deeply inspiring being who seems to become an actual presence herself--someone to guide us back toward awakening to the wondrous, sensuous world around us. Far beyond the information purveyed or even the stories told, Laura Sewall herself emerges from her luminous prose as though to point with a gentle smile to the doorway which will lead us from our self-made enclosures, from the prison of our own device. This prison seems to consist of our habit-routines which bind our perceptions. Her special field of expertise is sight. She shows how we have lost our "depth-perception" by seeing everything in terms of our own culturally constructed self and its illusory security. We have learned to see only objects in terms of their potential use or threat to us. We do not see into them or their unified relations or our relationship with them (and through them): "The canon that our Western worldview posits is that the healthy, well-adjusted adult is autonomous and independent, not interdependent" (247). Instead of seeing the living world and knowing we are part of it, we see a dead world reduced to "resources". But her tale is much more than a position or an argument. She shows the reader both through her own experience (including a powerfully transcendent moment of awakening on the East African veldt) and, more subtly, through her expressive prose and prose-poetry. Reading this book is itself an experience which approaches such transcendent moments. For Laura Sewall, "perception is the dynamic ground of our many relationships with the world" (17) which "may become the ground for a sensuous, even ecstatic relationship with the world" (18). And this is the kind of many faceted text which can remind us of that. Nearing the end, as the author called for the courage of new consciousness, I feared for a time that we were going to leave terra firma and go soaring into the airy-fairy realms of New Age spiritualism. But I was wrong, and relieved to be so. This fine author stayed firmly on our dusty planet: "My prayer is that we *get down*, that we get down and dirty" (274). When I was finished, I closed the book and whooped for sheer joy.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful vision, richly and accessibly expressed........2000-04-25

Ken Cohen in TAOISM, relates the body's meridians to Earth's energy fields through Feng Shui. In SIGHT AND SENSIBILTY, Laura Sewall relates Human Potential to Ecology through the neurophysiology of vision. She incorporates ideas not only from Eastern and Western philosophies, but also Native cultures in expressing her vision.

Justifiably critical of modern civilization, her message remains guardedly positive. For instance, early in her study of Vision, she recognized that visual processing in adults was more malleable than recognized by establisfed science. She also postulates that by employing the senses fully, we can learn to love the Earth. In other words,to improve things for the next generation is in Pema Chodron's: START WHERE YOU ARE.

Laura Sewall stresses, as the teacher who inspired me many years ago did, "bridging gaps", integrative methods, and sharing. The ideas in this book like D'Arcy Thompson's: ON GROWTH AND FORM will inspire people for many years. Her book is also a good example of what is meant in Buddhassa Bhikkhu's: MINDFULNESS WITH BREATHING: "We can use any bodily activity as a basis for (mindfulness). The more necessary and central to life that activity is, the better."

Not only has this book connected to ideas that interest me, it has provided many interesing new ideas to explore. One measure of how well she writes is, how easy it is to check the page notes and bibliograpy during the course of reading.

I believe anyone who reads this book will have a comparable experience, although in perphaps quite different areas of endeavor.

5 out of 5 stars A great, current book for children.......2007-05-15

I used this book for a unit I taught recently on natural resources and conservation, and my second graders loved it! One of the few books on the subject geared toward younger children, this book does a great job of presenting global warming in simple, kid-friendly terms without distortion. The fun and accessible illustrations are very engaging; my students spent several minutes just examining the page with plankton and other sea life. They came away from the book with both a sense of urgency about the topic and the conviction that they can do something to help.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Science Resource for Young Readers..........2006-12-05

Global warming is a scary topic for a children's book, but one that children need to know about. In WHY ARE THE ICE CAPS MELTING, author Anne Rockwell writes about this topic in a voice that children can understand. Ms. Rockwell explains why the ice caps are melting, what global warming is, what the greenhouse effect is, and most important of all, she tells children what they can do to help stop this from happening.

Written in a friendly, mentoring style, WHY ARE THE ICE CAPS MELTING will inform children while fostering a good attitude towards conservation and our environment. Illustrated with cute, but educational, pictures from talented artist Paul Meisel, WHY ARE THE ICE CAPS MELTING takes children on a journey that will affect them the rest of their lives. After all, we all share this planet, and will for the rest of our lives.

Kudos to Ms. Rockwell for tackling such a tough subject and breaking it down to make it easily understandable to our most important audience! This book is an excellent resource, one that can easily be used to teach children basic science concepts about global warming.

If we could name the greatest environmental threat that we face, it wouldn't be the depletion of the ozone or even of the world's natural resources. In fact, it would be the depletion of the human spirit, according to ecopsychologist Ralph Metzner, Ph.D. And how did this catastrophe come about? It all happened when the religions of Western civilization were no longer based on living harmoniously with the earth. Once Western religions began to seek dominance instead of partnership with nature, we created a pathology that led to a massive destruction of the human spirit and a frightening worship of consumerism to fill the void. Simply put, by disrespecting and destroying the earth, we are disrespecting and destroying what sustains the human spirit, explains Metzner.

Although the perils of disconnecting from nature are well written and researched, this is not a book of doom and gloom. In fact, Metzner has accomplished an extremely well-written and thoroughly hopeful book. The final chapters suggest numerous solutions. Metzner also points to encouraging signs, such as the new wave of ecofeminism, as evidence of our ability to return to the earth--once again bonding spirit with nature. --Gail Hudson

Book Description

A visionary ecopsychologist examines the rift between human beings and nature and shows what can be done to bring harmony to both the ecosystem and our own minds.

• Shows that the solution to our ecological dilemma lies in our own consciousnesses.

It is becoming more and more apparent that the causes and cures for the current ecological crisis are to be found in the hearts and minds of human beings. For millennia we existed within a religious and psychological framework that honored the Earth as a partner and worked to maintain a balance with nature. But somehow a root pathology took hold in Western civilization--the idea of domination over nature--and this led to an alienation of the human spirit that has allowed an unprecedented destruction of the very systems which support that spirit.

In Green Psychology Ralph Metzner explores the history of this global pathology and examines the ways that we can restore a healing relationship with nature. His search for role models takes him from shamanic ceremonies with the Lacandon Maya of Mexico to vision quests in the California desert, from the astonishing nature mysticism of Hildegard von Bingen to the Black Goddesses and Green Gods of our pagan ancestors. He examines the historical roots of the split between humans and nature, showing how first sky-god worshiping cultures, then monotheisms, and finally mechanistic science continued to isolate the human psyche from the life-giving Earth. His final chapters present a solution, showing that disciplines such as deep ecology and ecofeminism are creating a worldview in which the mind of humanity and the health of the Earth are harmoniously intertwined.

2 out of 5 stars Good for beginners, but not an advanced piece. .......2007-06-19

As a student of ecopsychology, I picked up this work expecting to find in depth discussions about theories in psychology and ecopsychology. I was already familiar with many of the concepts discussed in this book- vision quests, psychedelics, shamanism, and the like. So in all honesty, I was not too thrilled or dazzled.
If you are new to the subject, this is a good introduction. For someone studying this a while and is familiar with these concepts, I would point the readers to Ecopsychology: Restoring the Earth, Healing the Mind. The author contributes to this excellent anthology.

5 out of 5 stars Psychedelics and Evolutionary Consciousness.......2006-09-05

Great book! Metzner writes of the first original world of the tribal indigenous society that living in harmony with nature and the earth for thousands of years in appreciation and religious sacredness of divinity in all life and matter. Responsible and healing use of herbs and psychedelics were used to create peace and higher understandings of spirituality.

In this Metzner looks at the various Gaia theories and the human connection to the earth, the spirits of nature, the world tree metaphor and the 4 elements in spiritual and ritual. He then relates a personal vision quest he had partaken and next goes into the "Green" mystical visions of 12th century Abbess Hildegard von Bingen.

There is emphasis put on psychedelics as Gnostic catalysts, evolving consciousness to see beyond polarities, as a possible evolutionary instrument towards wider awareness beyond cultural, religious, societal-economic filters to the integral systems of transformation, including shamanism, alchemy and yoga. Thoughts are presented on the human-nature alienation of ecology from the mechanistic science of Western civilization and its harmful reductionism to our psyches (Shepard's ontogenetic crippling) and our environment, in loss of adolescent initiation rites, in autism or crippling compartmentalization, in addictions to consumerism, in narcissist self elevations, and amnesia from past evolutionary traumatic events.

Also brought out are the historical roots of mechanistic science, humanism, Protestantism, colonialism and are need to move towards reconsidering polytheistic animism, seeing the sacredness in all life and the mundane; how the assault of paganism in the ancient sky gods attack on the earth goddess religious cultures, using various myths depicting acceptance, rejection and assimilation.

5 out of 5 stars Green Psychology.......2003-03-21

This book is wonderful and outlining man's relationship with nature. I found it especially helpful while also reading the poetry of William Wordsworth, who holds the man/nature relationship in high esteem. I have already taken pages of notes while reading this and will certainly incorporate some of it into my personal philosophy (especially the materialism chapter... there are hints at Buddhism throughout the book). A great read for any nature or psychology enthusiast.

4 out of 5 stars A Worthy Compilation--but not a Coherent Work.......2001-03-15

Each chapter in this book has a different emphasis. Each one stands alone and independent. The chapters span a wide range of subjects, from ecopsychology, to natural entheogens (teacher plants, which induce an altered state of consciousness useful for spiritual journeying).

He begins with an account of his visit with the Lacandones and experience of their Balche, an entheogenic drink. His next chapter uses depth psychology to analyze the Gaian hypothesis. He then describes a vision quest experience in the Mojave Desert before moving on to a discussion of the Veriditas of Hildegard von Bingen, a 12th century mystic. He examines the role of entheogens, then broaches the subject of the psychopathology of the human-nature relationship--also examining the dissociative split within human consciousness between the spiritual and the natural. He goes back in time to contrast the Indo-Kurgan "sky gods" with the matrifocal cultures and their earth deities. He peeks at the wild deities of animistic and shamanic cultures, and then considers how the reunification of the sacred and the natural could impact both individuals and society. He shows how our current situation demands that we move to an ecological world view. Finally, he concludes with a chapter which demands that we root ourselves in our bioregions, commenting that our identity is not simply the ego baggage we have acquired, but that we also identify as beings who exist in a place. Without the stories of our "places," we are set adrift, and cannot forge a sacred union with the Natural.

5 out of 5 stars Alarm Call.......2000-05-07

I was a bit slow getting started reading this book, but once I began in earnest I got fascinated. It is a systems view of Man and the Environment, asking the hard questions and proposing answers from the psychologists (and common sense) point of view. There is so much management and operations management which is done without regard for the important constraints of the problem, it is getting out of hand. Can industries exist and produce without ruining the earth which supports them? Is there such a thing as a sustainable telecommunications system? Better ask these questions, and answer them, before it is too late.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful contribution to metaphysical studies........2000-07-04

The Call Goes Out: Messages from the Earth's Cetaceans is a collection of messages channeled by Diane Robbins from cetaceans (whales and dolphins), graphically spelling out why these life forms are here on Earth, how they work with extra-terrestrials, and how humans are interfering with their unique mission. Through Robbins, these creatures present an impassioned pleas for humans to stop whaling and cease the using of dolphin-killing fishing nets -- and to free whales and dolphins held in captivity in human aquariums and pens. Highly recommended reading for students of metaphysics, New Age studies, and extraterrestrial contact issues, The Call Goes Out is a revelation of the rich family and cultural life of non-human but intelligent species sharing planet Earth.

My son received this book as a gift from his first grade teacher for entering a project into the science fair. He enjoys reading this book over and over again. This book has made him think about all the different types of animals and how the envoriment can cause them harm. This book gives the description of the animal, size, location and what may be the cause of their extinction. It not only teaches about the worlds rarest animals but in the back of the book there is a world map of all the locations listed within the book. I believe that this book is great for educating our children on both science and geography. I would recommend this book to any science and animal lover.

5 out of 5 stars A Quest for Personal and Global Transformation.......2004-05-08

Brian O'Leary has an unusually rich background of personal and professional experience which has cast him into the role of "Changemaster" for the Global Social Architecture. His writing is clear, well-organized and direct. He blends the esoteric with leading-edge science, technology, and poignant examples from from his own personal experience, he writes in a narrative style that is both compelling and provocative.
Retreating from former perspectives, gained as a NASA Scientist/Astronaut, Aerospace Consultant, and Ivy-League Academic, he has returned to earth in the role of genuine person, speaking in a language which is understandable and readable.
For anyone interested in gaining a broad-brush understanding of Quantum Physics and how it relates to Human Counsiousness, the Eco-logic of the Human Condition in the Global Biosphere, and the future Survival of the Human Race, this book embodies a fascinating literary journey into the depths of Inner and Outer Space.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read if you care about wolves.......2007-08-10

This is one of the best books on wolves I've ever read! It is packed full of information but does not come across like an encyclopedia. It's easy reading with lots of colorful photographs. I was overcome with sadness and emotion when I read McIntyre's account of the story of "Rags the Digger," one of the famous and incredibly clever "outlaw wolves" that eluded federal government capture for years. The book gives animated detail of how a famous bounty hunter "finally" killed Raggs, an indomitable spirit. It is an important reminder that there is no animal who will EVER be a match to a human being with a gun intent on killing it.

Very, very excellent and readable book. I couldn't put it down. If you care about wolves, are simply interested in wolves and want to know their story, buy this!

5 out of 5 stars A must for wildlife enthusiasts.......2001-11-11

Running a wildlife safari company in Yellowstone, the wolves that we view have become a major attraction. I have learnt so much from this book that it is now a requirement for all my guides to read it from front to back, so they are totally educated on wolves. Rick McIntyre's A Society of Wolves captures everything you want to learn about wolves, including their behavior, pack structure, and how similar they are to us. This book is a must if you are interested in wolves, wildlife and Yellowstone.

      5 out of 5 stars A Must!.......2000-09-05

Rick McIntyre does us a great service with this book. It is an excellent compilation of written material and photographs that will prove transformational to anyone interested in wildlife. A moving account of day-to-day life in a wolf pack, it also provides an invaluable history of wolf persecution in this country. He also lists excellent resources to contact to learn more about the fate of the wolf and how to become active in their reintroduction. This book answers the questions "Where did all the wolves go?" and "Why do we need them back?" An important and compelling read.
