SAFETY 24/7 Building an Incident Free Safety Culture By Gregory M. Anderson & Robert L. Lorber, Ph.D. Book Summary
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Book.......2007-03-08
I was first introduced to the book while providing consulting services (for the company who I now work for) at one of their customer's locations. The particular customer provides a copy of the book to all contractors doing business at their site!
I have been in the field of safety for approximately 15 years; 6 years with a Japanese Company, 7 years with a major Lift Truck manufacturer, 1 ½ years with the State of Ohio, and approximately 6 months with my current employer dealing with Construction, Crane & Rigging, Maintenance, etc. This is the first book dealing with safety that I could not put down; I had to read the entire book in one sitting!
I have taught behavioral safety and found that most of the items I have covered in training were in this book. It is the perfect book for everyone from top management to a newly hired employee to read. I am a member of the Society of Ohio Safety Engineers and I took Safety 24/7 to a meeting with me, briefed the members on it and strongly recommended that they all get copies. We (PSC) purchased several copies of the book and are in the process of giving copies to all of our supervisors. We have had several employees read the book, write summaries of the book and indicate how building an incident-free culture is beneficial to their workplace. Our goal is to have all employees who work for us, go through this - on our time!
We have provided copies to some of our customers to help impress upon them how strongly we feel about safety! I just can't say enough good things about the material covered in the book! I must also tell you that when the owner's of PSC came to me to ask me to come work for them I told them they had to do two things; 1) Support me in "safety" and be actively involved and 2) Read Safety 24/7!
Thank you so much for the wonderful book! It goes beyond what a safety professional can teach! I am looking forward to a sequel!

Good book........2007-01-11

A General Overview Of Occupational Safety.......2006-10-09
I used this book in a graduate Industrial Safety Management class, and agree with reviewer David Sullivan's assessment that this book is a good general overview of occupational safety and health issues, but that it is definitely more useful at the undergraduate level. I have a decent background in this area, and found no groundbreaking insights in this text, though I do believe that people (and especially students) new to the field would find it quite useful.
The book is a fairly general survey of the issues inherent to contemporary occupational safety and health, and has good general overviews of all important large-scale issues. There are errors in this book, some are small, and most are fairly excusable, though there are generalizations and errors in the Electrical Hazards chapter (Chapter 12) that are fairly egregious. I thought that Chapter 21 ("Safety Analysis, Prevention, and Management") was one of the best chapters in the book: the introduction to techniques like FMEA and FTA was good, though I would have put this chapter considerably earlier in the text. The chapter on Worker's Compensation (Chapter 5) was positively painful to read, though I doubt that there is much that can be done to make the material especially captivating.
Some of the material in this book is dated, but in general I think this is a satisfactory book to be used as an introduction to occupational safety students.
An Good Introductory Text.......2006-03-25
This book is a good introduction into occupational safety. Some of the information, especially in the area of robotics safety and automation, is quite dated. While this book is used in some graduate programs, it is more suited for the undergraduate. Important historical items such as Chernobyl were left out while other less fatal disasters were left in, but we can forgive the author if he includes it in his next version.
I would encourage the author to include references to other safety standards and more details into cumulative trauma disorders in the next volume.
Excellent Service.......2005-10-03
I was provided quick an excellent service. Keep up the good work!
A tremendous book.......2004-03-12
The above reviewer will obviously have occupational health issues, because smoking weed while writing reviews will cause one to be disoriented, lose their balance, and possibly fall off a 100 story construction site beam.
This is an amazing book. While covering all of the topics in depth, this book is also easy to read, presenting the material in a fashion that allows the reader to recieve a complete understanding of the topic. This too was an assigned book for my class, and I'll be lucky if I get to take a Goetsch class again.
Poorly Written.......2002-04-05
This is one of the most poorly written textbooks I've read. The author, who is apparently a Phd, writes with the style of a 7th or 8th grader; he uses poor grammar, is painfully repetitive, uses jargon from differing areas of specialty (such as medical terms that require a medical dictionary to understand), leaves out information that should be there (based on the topics covered in my construction safety class), includes irrelevant information, and is flat out wrong about some topics (UL and ASTM would be interested to know "any relationship between a fire rating and the reality of fire resistance may be little more than coincidental".) This is especially frustrating considering this is the fourth edition. There is some evidence that the author has substantial knowledge about the topic. However, he is out of date in some areas and, in general, he presents that knowledge poorly. Also, judging from the breadth of topics this author had written about it appears the old cliche is true: "Jack of all trades. Master of none." While there is some decent information in this book, it is a chore to read. This was a required text for my class. If you have a choice in the matter choose something (anything) else.
Book Description
Emergency Response Planning outlines the essential roles of corporate and municipal managers and demonstrates the importance of their relationships with federal, state, and local government agencies as well as public and private community sectors. Author Paul Erickson, one of the leading experts in the field, focuses on proactively planning for emergencies, particularly in the recognition and advance coordination of response to incidents instead of simply implementing emergency measures.
The book is broken out into three sections. Section 1 outlines the overall scope of comprehensive emergency planning and discusses in detail the major elements that must be addressed in an Emergency Response Plan. Section 2 examines the types of hazards and risks faced by emergency response personnel, as well as the public, in typical emergencies, and provides specific recommendations regarding the immediate and long-term health and safety of emergency response personnel. Section 3 discusses a range of issues that must be given special attention in the development and implementation of any emergency response plan including: hazard and risk reduction, decontamination, data and information management, monitoring strategies and devices, terrorism, and the training of emergency response personnel.
* Helps you to develop and implement an Emergency Response Plan
* Provides specific recommendations regarding the immediate and long-term health and safety of emergency response personnel
* End of Chapter summaries and questions provide concise information on learning objectives and a review of important concepts

Book Description
With the help of an implementation strategy, guidelines for minimizing development costs, and insight into a proven plan development methodology, Manager's Guide to Contingency Planning for Disasters: Protecting Vital Facilities and Critical Operations helps you to:
* Establish a corporate contingency plan policy and strategy that will ensure timely completion of a plan with minimal disruption to operations.
* Minimize plan development costs
* Understand the importance of conducting briefings to communicate the proper mindset before the plan development process begins.
* Save time and money by avoiding the consultant's traditional approach of extensive information-gathering that contributes little to the development of practical solutions
Remember that you have good people on your management team who don't need a lot of detailed instruction on how to do things in an emergency situation. Precisely "how" they do anything will depend on the specific nature of the disaster and the extent of the damage. Addressing complex hypothetical disaster combinations does not make good business sense. Just prepare "what if" strategies for a worst case and rely on the judgment of your line managers to cope with less severe incidents.
Customer Reviews:
some interesting concepts.......2003-09-12
There are some interesting ideas presented by Mr Myers in this book. But, for the most part the concepts are too old-school, naive and simplistic. Truth is, it would be hard for most modern day corporations using ERP systems, automated production and other technologies to apply the principles of this book.
Nonetheless, this book might be worth it, if one is starting on a BCP project and is open to an alternative viewpoint. However, it is so redundant, that there is really no point reading beyond the first twenty or so pages. To make matters worse, the information is presented in an endless array of bullets, exhibits, tables, numbered lists. All different from one another, yet presenting the same material again and again.
Even for a dry business subject, this is a frustrating, unenjoyable read. Worth only one star.
Sensible approach to quickly getting a plan in place.......2001-09-23
While this book addresses contingency planning across the enterprise I found it extremely useful for a much narrower scope, which is assuring applications and systems availability, and service delivery.
The book focuses on quickly developing and implementing a basic contingency plan. The approach set forth is straightforward and covers the basics of contingency planning: problem framing, impact analysis, developing the plan and testing/validating the plan. At 234 pages it is not a comprehensive text for disaster recovery or business continuity planning professionals, but for managers who see gaps or are exercising due diligence, this book covers all of the basics in sufficient detail.
What I like most is the simplicity of the approach, which will give you a starting point for implementing business contingency and continuity plans quickly. Once implemented in accordance with the approach set forth in this book you will have a working plan that covers response strategies and roles and responsibilities that can be built upon and refined. The most valuable chapters in this book address telephone communications, computer processing and vital facilities, all of which are critical to business operations. Also pay careful attention to the beginning of the book because it clearly describes management's responsibility and culpability for having a viable plan in place.
Also valuable are the appendices, which include case studies, sample computer contingency plan and sample business continuity strategies. These samples illustrate how these important documents should be structured.
This book does not eliminate the need for professional assistance as the plan takes shape or after a baseline plan has been implemented. Indeed, prudence and due diligence should guide you to seeking the services of certified business continuity planners or disaster recovery professionals, either as consultants or in-house staff positions. However, this book does provide a starting point, especially for smaller businesses that do not have a formal plan in place.
