Customer Reviews:
A great text book..........2007-01-02
I ordered this textbook for an MSW course, and it's wonderful. I love all the examples and the software that comes with it.
Another Edition to a fantastic text.......2005-08-10
This new edition of the text once again proves that these authors are the masters of single subject research. I have used this text for five years in my graduate methods course and am completely satisfied with their coverage of the material of single subject research design. Just when a researcher thought it could not get any better, this new edition comes along with updates to the software.
Get this book.
enough is enough.......2005-03-22
I was pleased to hear that this text had been assigned in a graduate research course at my graduate school of social work. I'm seriously disappointed. I would not recommend this text's continued use. It is excessively repetitive, constantly restating previous material (commonly referred to as 'rehashing'), and, as a sidebar, i can't help but mention an irritating habit of unnecessary references to material yet to come ('we'll talk about that more in chapter 14.'). The writing style is terribly wordy, and in a weighted, clunky pseudo-conversational style that rarely is effective in a textbook. The actual technical information is obscured in a constant river of verbiage, usually in page after page of solid block text, the least helpful format when learning technical information (or when subsequently searching for specific information or techniques). The result? It serves as a strong sedative. Finally, the authors repeatedly express apologies, in what eventually (by page 350) feels like an obsequious and cloying manner, for putting forward an empirical and accountable approach to clinical practice. The worst, though, is the repetition of material, as if the reader were an idiot. The sheer relentlessness of it is what is so galling, and at $100 bucks, neither affordable nor worth the investment. There are other texts out there with clearer, cleaner, more articulate prose, that are more respectful of the reader, and at half the price, such as the classic and affordable: Single-Case Research Designs: Methods for Clinical and Applied Settings by Alan E. Kazdin. Ignore the pollyanna reviews above and below, and avoid this text, or if on the syllabus, protest and suggest an alternative.
A Classic in Practice Evaluation.......2003-11-13
Bloom, Fischer and Orme continue to make an unique contribution to improving practice in the human services by providing a road map by which practitioners can evaluate their effectiveness. I've been using their text book for over 15 years in teaching practice evaluation and in has been an invaluable help. The new edition has a CD Rom with SingWin, CAAP,and CAAS which I was able to install in Windows XP Home edition. You must install CAAS before CAAP for it to work. The sofware computerizes record keeping, score computation, and graph construction. I strongly reccommend this textbook for human services faculty.

Customer Reviews:
Just as Promised.......2005-10-05
The book arrived in a timely manner and it was in the condition that I expected. I would order from this vendor again.
Expensive and Confusing.......2005-09-17
The layout and language of this extremely expensive textbook, written by one of the most seasoned and successful PR practitioners, unfortunately makes this book almost unreadable. Not only is it completely boring, but the language makes the topics seem very vague and disconnected from practical PR practice.
Chapters in this book are much too long. One can infer from the title of the book that it will cover PR practice in great detail, however, the most important topic the book covers "the execution of public relations" only gets 112 pages of a nearly 600 page book.
Practical Public Relations at its best!.......2003-08-09
I've been using this book for about a year, as a professor teaching Public Relations. I like it, and the students always say it's a great book. It has just enough theory, plus a lot of practical application. The high point, and what students like best, is the series of case studies. There's one in each chapter, 20 in all. I know from personal experience, having spent 15 years as a "PR Man," before turning professor, that these cases are real-life examples of what to do, and especially, what not to do! Entertaining and interesting, while still being an excellent text. Much better than other books sometimes used for Public Relations courses.
Practice of Public Relations (8th Edition).......2002-11-07
I have never enjoyed a textbook this much! It is timely, interesting and provocative.
Seitel Succeeds.......2002-08-20
Practice of Public Relations is laden with strengths. While it covers public relations in a variety of disciplines, such as multicultural, and it covers a variety of case studies, such as the infamous Exxon Valdez disaster, its sheer strength lies in its writing style. Seitel's style is quite distinct from many other texts, whose writers preach the importance of writing, but fail to practice it. Similar to Michael Levine's Guerrilla PR: Wired, Seitel understands that a message will have less impact if the message is difficult to comprehend. Both Levine and Seitel make a welcome effort to rely on a friendly, warm, and inviting writing style, one that engages the reader.
Practice of Public Relations strives to keep up with an ever-changing public relations landscape. While releases retain their importance, it is equally important to consider video. Similarly, the target public may not be any one demographic, but a multicultural one, each with its own concerns, preferences, gatekeepers, and trusted sources of information. Also, the book takes into consideration the synergy of integrated marketing communication. Public relations does not operate in a vaccuum, and Practice of Public Relations takes that into consideration.
Above all else, the book lives up to its title, explaining the practice of public relations rather than being a lengthy tome on the theory behind the practice.

Public Relations: Strategies and Tactics (8th Edition)
ASIN: 0136138039 |
Book Description
Written by two of the most respected and honored individuals in the field, this definitive casebook of actual real-life public relations situations serves as a reference and guidebook for helping public relations professionals apply effective, cutting-edge public relations theories, principles, and practices to a wide variety of situations --involving all types and sizes of organizations. Features actual, real-life cases on each aspect of public relations --employee relations, media relations, community relations, issues, crises, investor relations, consumer relations and ethics. Some cases end favorable for the organization involved, some end in failure, and others are unresolved. Provides comprehensive introductions to each series of cases. Stresses the importance and necessity of combining all public relations actions with both personal and professional ethics in behavior -- as outlined by the Declaration of Principles of PRSA's Code of Ethics. For any practicing public relations professional.
Customer Reviews:
the real world.......2002-08-22
This book should be required for everyone even thinking about entering the field of public relations. The case studies give a very real view of how public relations are in the real world. Michael Levine's Guerrilla PR Wired is also another book that gives a real-life accurate view of PR. I would recommend in particular his Magoo Theory of public realtions.
Public Relations Practices has clear intelligent writing that talks to the reader without talking down to them
Real World Public Relations.......2000-03-26
If ever a book was written that applied the concepts, theories, and functions of public relations to actual real-life senarios, this is the one. In their Public Relations Practices, Center and Jackson breathed life into theoretical public relations, bringing it into "the real world" with cases in several areas of public relations--media relations, consumer relations, employee relations, investor relations, community relations, crisis management, public and private issues, interests, & concerns, and most importantly, standards, values, & ethics. Two probable prerequisites to this book would be a book on the basic principles and practices of PR and a book on PR campaign strategies. Public Relations Practices is the door through which the reader is invited to enter "the real world" of PR. Anyone, from the student of public relations to the working practitioner with decades of experience, can greatly benefit from the information contained within this text.
The best PR text I have ever read.......1999-06-01
I read this book in a college public relations class. Now, as an account executive in a public relations firm, I still find it invaluable. This text places special emphasis on the evaluation of public relations, and thus it is a credit to our field. I can't recommend it highly enough. Once you have read some introductory book on PR principles, this is required reading.

Bureaucracy: What Government Agencies Do and Why They Do It (Basic Books Classics)
ASIN: 156802780X |
Book Description
Rulemaking is the single most important function performed by agencies of the government. Cornelius Kerwin shows us why this is the case with the third edition of his important and highly regarded text.
Calls for smarter, cheaper, yet more accountable government increasingly affect the definition and implementation of public policy in the United States. Kerwin argues that while Congress and the president provide the general framework for the government's mission, rulemaking fills in the myriad details that define the law and delineate how each agency carries out its specific responsibilities. It is no wonder that so much intense political activity surrounds rulemaking. The third edition--comprehensively revised with new research, incorporation of recent scholarship, and fresh analysis of the George W. Bush administration's impact--is an invaluable guide to navigating the ins and outs of this important process. This unique and accessible book contains the most current and accurate information available on a crucial yet under-studied subject.
What's new?
-
Survey research - further examination of public participation, including an update of the interest groups' involvement survey, shedding new light on the tactics used to influence rulemaking
-
Data - up-to-the-minute figures on the volume of rulemaking and related actions
-
Recent developments - alterations of rulemaking procedures in response to actions by Congress, the president, and the courts, as well as treatment of efforts by the Bush White House to direct and manage aspects of the process
-
Expanded treatment - new information on the systems that agencies devote to management of the rules, along with additional insight on "electronic rulemaking"
Customer Reviews:
School required text for MPA.......2007-10-20
I am a graduate student at Jacksonville State in the MPA program and bought this text as part of the required reading for the one course I am taking. It is very helpful and easy to understand. I believe it will help with my further understanding of how government bureaucracies draft bills that can and do become law.
I finished with more questions than answers........2003-02-25
I am on an endless quest, it seems; to find a book on the administrative state that is informative while being at least mildly enthusiastic about its subject. This book starts out enthusiastic. This book certainly started with enthusiasm. The first chapter, in fact, is devoted to convincing us why the administrative state is a superb American invention (a view I do not always share!) Chapter 5, which is devoted to public participation in the Admin. state also bubbles with giddiness.
Like a horse on crack-cocaine, though, this book stars with gallant speed, slows down fast and ends with an mild gasp. I'm sure this was not the authors intention. There are two main reasons. First, as the book is structured so that each chapter examines another area of admin. state rule making (oversight from the 3 branches, rulemaking structure, inherent paradoxes of the process) the first two chapters, which are almost overviews of the rest of the book, builds up high expectations. For example, when the first chapter lightly nibbles at rulemaking's structural issues, tow paragraphs in we are told that we will need to wait untill another chapter for a discussion. The author does this repeatedly throughout the book, thus leaving the reader in a constant hang.
The second reason for the flickering finish of the book is that, and unfortunately as with most admin. state books, not much save for completely varied anecdotal information is offered. How are rules written, the book asks; it depends on the administration, it answers. What about modes of public participation and debate? Depends on the rules of the comission. After a while, its almost pointless to read the next chapter as we begin to guess the answer to each question posed.
The reason, though, for the three stars is this: Chapter 1 (on justifications for the admin. state), Chapter 3(paradoxes inherent in the rulemaking process) and Chapter 7 (the role of theory in rulemaking and its reform) are actually decent and informative chapters. Vagueness aside, they do provide useful anecdotes. Also Chapters 3 and 7 present ideas, discussions and points that are all but ignored in other books on admin. state rulemaking. Buy the book, read those 3 chapters and maybe skim the rest.

Understanding and Managing Public Organizations (Jossey Bass Nonprofit & Public Management Series)
ASIN: 0393973999 |
Book Description
This readable and comprehensive introduction to the principles of public-policy analysis is the first book to integrate the tools students need to analyze politics with the common sense they need to understand how real policies are made. Analyzing Policynot only helps students learn the conceptual foundations of policy analysis, but it also helps them understand the conflicts between markets, democracy, and experts in political decision making. The book offers students the basics of the welfare-economics paradigm and cost-benefit analysis while highlighting the roles that policy analysts play. The analytical techniques presented in the text are applied throughout each chapter and in three chapter-length case studies. Students are challenged to apply these techniques on their own in end-of-chapter exercises and additional problems on Norton's supporting Web site.
Customer Reviews:
Refreshing Public Policy.......2002-05-16
As a student in introductory policy analysis, I fully enjoyed the author's approach to policy. Without an extensive background in economics or political science, the text was still quite manageable because it flowed. It gives enough background info in order to better understand concepts without being a long text. Entertaining, witty, and thorough throughout, the professor I know as a brilliant man who worked for the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, enlightens with great precision. Blending a little history of economic and political theory with a skillful modern twist, this is introductory public policy analysis at its best. Highly recommended.

Book Description
"Evidently, the time has come to describe and assess the shift and its effects on policies per se. And this book does so brilliantly. It takes stock of the relevant literature and also identifies significant theoretical issues as well as practical problems associated with public implementation in the new context of governance. Thus, the book is depicted as a state-of-the-art on public policy implementation"
--CHOICE
Bringing the major current insights in implementation research and theory together,
Public Policy, Implementation and Governance reviews the literature on public policy implementation, relating it to contemporary developments in thinking about governance.
The text stresses the continuing importance of a focus upon implementation processes and explores its central relevance to the practice of public administration. In light of the changing nature of governance, Hill and Hupe suggest strategies for both future research on and management of public policy implementation. Their basic approach is two-fold: firstly, to understand the process of implementation and secondly, to address how one might control and affect this process.
Re-exploring the state of the art of the study of implementation as a sub-discipline of political science and public administration, this book will be essential reading for students and researchers in public policy, social policy, public management, public adminstration and governance.

Book Description
This very practical book provides a nuts-and-bolts introduction to case management. The book was initially written by the author as a manual for beginning case managers, and it is still focused on how to actually track and manage a case load.
The book is geared to entry-level professionals, and provides plenty of actual case examples to illustrate the pitfalls and high points of case management. Chapter 7 includes practical tips based on real training situations, such as how to interview clients. A list of key terms at the end of every chapter provides a focus for student review. Discussion questions at the end of every chapter are taken from real-life case management practice. Bibliographies at the ends of the chapters and at the end of the text provide suggestions for further research. The glossary at the end of the book establishes standard definitions of terms commonly used in practice.
For anyone interested in social work, nursing, psychology, or public administration.
Customer Reviews:
Practice of Generalist Case Management.......2001-07-23
The Practice of Generalist Case Management is a decent book for one wanting an overview of case management duties. The book is written in text book format, yet lacks some organizational qualities of putting information in hiarchical format to be remembered easily as most text books. I am not saying the book has problems with its organizational structure but for someone new to case management the structure within chapters is a little awkward.
Back up to catch up: Overcome specialization in Social Work.......2001-07-01
Holt has put together a solid overview of generalist case management. Although written for graduate students and working professionals, I have used it with independent study and directed reading courses for senior undergraduates planning to enter an MSW program. They have given me positive feedback about the value of this book during their internships in social and human services agencies. A good counterbalance to the over-specialization that hit social work education about 3 decades ago.
This book is excellent!.......1999-11-20
This book provides a very comprehensive overview of the practice of Generalized Case Management. It is written in a very easy to read format, and is loaded with the most up to date information on the field.
I highly recommend this book to those entering GCM as well as a great reference for those of us veterans already in the field.
