Customer Reviews:
Outstanding book for all ages.......2006-05-12
What is impressive about this book is it's appeal to any age. The book follows a firefighter during his typical 24-hour shift. All information is based on realistic circumstances - from responding to a car accident, to inspecting stores/restaurants, to teaching children fire safety, to the infamous fighting of brush fires.
Artwork is detailed but easy (and fascinating) for a two-year old to view. Lots of little details are imbedded in the pictures for older children to find and learn about firefighting.
The book is slightly wordy for a two-year old, but perfect for ages 4 and up. We summarize each page for our 2-year old son.
I am excited that this book will continue to be one of his favorites as he grows.
A must for children who love Firemen/Fire Trucks!
excellent book.......2006-04-08
This is a wonderfull book!!!!! It's realistic, the pictures are very good, the words used are perfect for my 3 year old son. He loves this book, and I love reading it to him over and over again.
At the top of kids firefighter books........2005-04-06
My five year old son loves firefighting books. I am a volunteer firefighter/EMT in NY so my son always has a lot of questions. This book is fine without explanations. My son always has to know, "Is that how you do it Daddy?"
This book stays close to reality with the help of Big Frank! Big Frank is a very likeable character for my son. I first started to read this book to him at 4 and he has loved it since.
My son LOVES this book.......2005-03-15
My son who is 2.5 years old and is very much into fire trucks nowadays, absolutely loves this book. Everytime when I ask which book he wants to read, he says "Big Frank's Fire Truck!" He's memorized pretty much the entire book. I'm now on the lookout for another fantastic book. He also loves Fireman Small.
favorite of fireman books.......2003-02-22
This book is great for reading to Toddlers, and self reading elementary school students up to at least 9 years old. Longer than you think it would be, it gives you an example of the daily routine of a fireman. Lots of fun and educational too. The fireman is full of personality due to great writing and wonderful detailed illustrations!

Nothing in business is more shrouded in secrecy and mystery than "doing the deal." The dealmakers themselves are usually flamboyant, the sums of money involved are vast, and the number of people who are affected by the deal are many. So it's no wonder that the media loves to cover stories like the QVC/Viacom battle over Paramount or Worldcom's recent takeover bids--deals like these can dominate headlines for days. Big Deal is about this high stakes game of corporate mergers and acquisitions. Author Bruce Wasserstein, himself a participant in many of these deals through his firm Wasserstein, Perella & Co., writes a highly readable and fascinating account that covers the history, personalities, and mechanics of mergers and acquisitions.
Wasserstein sees five waves of mergers beginning in the mid-1800s: the first wave involved the building of the railroad empires; the second in the 1920s saw a period of merger mania which was fueled in part by a frothy stock market and rapid industrial growth; the third wave happened during the "Go-Go Years" of the 1960s, which witnessed the rise of the conglomerate; the fourth occurred with the hostile takeovers of the 1980s, driven by names such as Icahn, Boesky, and Milken; and finally Wasserstein sees a fifth wave happening today. He attributes the current explosion of mergers and acquisitions to the need for companies to reposition themselves in today's ever changing competitive environment.
Wasserstein peppers the book with thumbnail personality profiles of some of the big dealmakers including Barry Diller, Sumner Redstone, Carl Icahn, T. Boone Pickens, and Bernard Ebbers. He also considers the many techniques and strategies employed by the dealmakers--poison pills, proxy fights, and bear hugs. Trends such as globalization, deregulation, and profound technological change are causing mergers and acquisitions to happen more than ever, and Big Deal provides a good foundation for understanding why and how these deals happen. --Harry C. Edwards

okay book.......2007-02-05
I'm a banker. This book is about banking deals, no stories, no filler, just cases. Good read of you want to learn about older mega deals. I think if you are a non-banker you will be bored out of your mind reading this book.
The Veritable Bible for Bankers.......2005-12-16
You will see this book and wonder how'll you finish an 800 pager like it in a reasonable ammount of time.
No worry -- this Bible of M&A is an engaging, informative read that will go by faster than you ever imagined.
I find myself recommending this book at least 3 or 4 X a year for people who want an overview of M&A in the late 20th century.
Instead of just spilling a bunch of historical data on the reader, Wasserstein dissects deals and tells us why things happened as they did.
My favorite part: the disastrous Quaker/Snapple merger!
Trust me, you'll love this book.
Wow! An incredible amount of great info in a single volume!.......2002-11-29
What an incredible resource! I bought this book because it was on the suggested reading list for a course on Corporate Control I took in the MBA program at the University of Michigan b-school. Yes, it is almost 900 pages long. Yes, some of the stories could use a bit of updating because of the recent events at places like Tyco and Worldcom. But so what? It is nice to have on record how people used to think and talk about these businesses and their CEOs.
That little tiny caveat aside it is important to focus on everything you get in this really neat book. You get a history of the different waves of the M&A process throughout history, how it has evolved, the way it has developed in different industries and market sectors, and a rather nice analysis (in the broadest strokes) of what goes in planning and executing these deals.
Throughout the book there are wonderful spotlights on the principle people in the history of M&A and little synopses of the more famous and important precedent setting deals. This aspect of the book is incredibly valuable. In order to make sense of what we read about in the paper about mergers and acquisitions we need to know how we got here. This book provides an incredible amount of wonderful background material. Some complain that the book is long. I think it is amazing that he has put so much in only 900 pages. Amazingly compact!
Mr. Wassertein, one of the industries movers and shakers (currently running Lazard), has organized this book in twenty-three chapters that are grouped in three large sections: (1) Past as Prelude, (2) The Strategic Challenge, and (3) Doing the Deal. Plus there is a nice bibliography (also grouped in according to these three sections) that can lead to further reading on the topics of interest to you. The index is also quite useful because this book can be used for reference in looking up or reviewing specific topics.
Yes, reading this book front to back is a great read, but you cannot remember it all the first time through. It is useful to be able to dive into specific deals, people, and topics. The author has put this book together in a thoughtful and helpful way.
If you want scandal and gossip, well, this book really isn't for you. However, if you are interested in the BUSINESS of M&A this is a six star book. It really is terrific.
Extremely dry book.......2002-07-19
This book makes the Mojave look positively flush with water. Mr. Wasserstein addresses a fascinating topic--mergers and acquistions--with all the passion of a mortician.
Why the five stars? Mr. Wasserstein also happens to be a brilliant attorney, and have a remarkably substantive body of knowledge about innumerable large acquistions that have occurred over the past thirty years. Indeed, in his bibliography, he writes: "Much of the contemporary factual material in this book is drawn from memory." That is an especially impressive statement, given that the book weighs in at over 900 pages.
Read the book if only to be impressed at the mind of such a man.
Interesting side note: Mr. Wasserstein's sister is a Pulitzer-prize-winning playwright, Wendy Wasserstein. Her plays evince a passion utterly lacking in _Big Deal_.
Highly Recommended!.......2002-03-21
M&A tycoon Bruce Wasserstein has not just studied the high-stakes world of corporate mergers & acquisitions, he's lived it. As head of M&A at First Boston and then as leader of his own firm, Wasserstein has played a role in many pivotal corporate marriages. In these pages, Wasserstein comprehensively examines the hows and whys of history's largest deals. While skirting the fundamental question of whether mergers & acquisitions enhance or depress shareholder value over the long term, Wasserstein conveys an overwhelming amount of information about the dynamics and tactics that define M&A. The book is enormous and encyclopedic, so it might serve better as a reference text than a straight-through read. We from getAbstract strongly recommend this book for both its compelling historic accounts of Wall Street's most important deals and deal makers and its detailed breakdown of how the game actually works.
Product Description
Marketing in the early 21st century is dominated by two approaches, neither of which is visible to the naked eye: the use of data to define and shape human affairs into machine-readable form and the effort to create and sustain ongoing two-way relationships with customers. The former is one way human life is being subjugated to the regime of the machine; the latter is one way the individual may one day emerge from within the datascape. A post-modern perspective is used to reveal both the "kaleidoroscope" of data and the "raw immaterials" of relationships in two companion essays.

Rebecca Nailed It.......2007-03-18
Rebecca's review is spot-on. I could read this book several times and get something new out of it each time. Ellis succinctly captures the changes in consumer-marketer interaction and the new 21st century value exchange and does a great job of putting it in historical and philosophical context.
Big Thoughts on Marketing .......2007-03-09
Most books on business (particularly those by self-proclaimed "gurus") seize on a single idea. With terrier-like tenacity they explain it, illustrate it, present case studies of it, then explain it yet again, until a readers feels she's entered some sort of textual version of "Groundhog's Day."
"Marketing in the In-Between," takes the opposite approach. It packs so many clusters of thought, ideas, revelations and connections on every page, the reader will need to repeatedly dip in to glean all the thoughts. It challenges readers to truly ponder and to question the basic precepts and practices upon which marketing is based.

junie b. jones and her big fatmouth!.......2006-02-01
i really liked this story because it is just a good story and it shows that she opened her big fat mouth and she said something that she really could not do and she lied and could not do all those things so she went home and ran to the nursre and her mother was in there tring to get her brother to sleep and junie b. jones went in there very loud and woke up her baby brother and her mother could not find her brothers paseyfire and junie b. finds it and her mother is sorry for screaming at junie b and the next day when she went to school she was wearing three jobs and i think it is a very good story and i liked it because it teachs you not to open your mouth when you know not toi hope i did a good job on my book report but it needs to say more at the end like it needs to have at the end of the story it need to say THE END in all stories it needs to say THE END but on some booksthey all have THE END but some people they just don't do it and that's okay. THE END!
Don't knock Junie B. Jones books - they are a great read........2005-11-16
Junie B. Jones are great books for ANYONE to get hooked on. Junie B. may have bad grammer, but it makes the book more realistic. Children know that bestest, runned, and broughted are not real words. Those kind of words just make reading more interesting. Kids can learn from bad examples too. It's ironic that parents don't protest against Hansel and Gretel or other books like that and how children run away without permission.
"Junie B. Jones is cool. I was her for halloween." says a six year old 1st grader. Junie is a funny kid that gets in trouble sometimes. But who doesn't ever get in trouble? These books show children how to deal with kids like her. Barbara Park's series isn't just funny, it's like a trap that gets kids reading all day long.
- Written By two fifth graders from Glen Oak Elementary who want to stick up for children.
The Junie B. Jones book.......2005-10-11

Even before Kum Kau Chinese Take Out opens, there's so much to do. The deliveryman arrives. The cooks clean the kitchen from top to bottom. Then chop, chop, chop, they slice and dice the fresh meat and vegetables. But when the customers arrive, Kum Kau really comes alive. Woks sizzle. Pots steam. Then it's time for his favorite dinner.
Delectable tastes and savory smells will make mouths water as Caldecott Honor artist Ted Lewin takes us to a favorite Chinese restaurant in his Brooklyn neighborhood.
Customer Reviews:
Both child and reader will love this book.......2007-01-29
I bought this book because I had read another book illustrated by Ted Lewin and found him to be a remarkable artist.
This book captures the sights and sounds of New York City; the reader will feel he or she is right in the kitchen with the steaming woks.
Most importantly, both the adult reader and the child listening (or reading on the second to third grade level) will be interested. And if your child likes books reread many times, this book will hold up. Among other things, there are so many details and subtleties in the artwork that the adult will be looking at every nook and cranny of the pictures.
I think Ted Lewin as as good an artist as Normal Rockwell.
Inside the kitchen of a real Chinese Restaurant in NY!.......2004-10-05
I think this a wonderful book and a up close view of what it's like in the kitchen of a Chinese take out restaurant! The book starts out on a very early Saturday morning as the owner's son comes downstairs into the back room of the restaurant as the vegetables are arriving for the day. The cooks he calls his "Uncles" are getting the woks ready and begin chopping up the chicken, pork butt, spareribs, flank steak, vegetables, and getting the noodles and rice ready for the day. Then there is folding menus until the metal shutters open at 11 am. The boys whole family works in the restaurant even his Mother & Aunt who work the counter and the phones really fast and sometime at the same time!
The author also illustrates this beautiful book! The pictures seem s real, just like the photos he took and then drew the photos from these photos. The restaurants menu is on the inside and back page of the book and also shows the author with his take out bag!
This is a fantastic book, and even more so since it's based on a real Chinese restaurant Kum kau pronounced "Gum Kow" which in Chinese means golden globe in New York and I hope one day when our family visits New York that we can visit and get some food there! All the while knowing how much work went into our food! It's a wonderful look inside a restaurant kitchen, especially since we order it ... and it magically appears! The only thing that would make this book better would be if this family was actually real and not fictional!
So tasty that two hours later, you will want to re-read it.......2002-07-27
The award winning children's book illustrator loves to eat Buddha's Delight at the Kum Kau take out chinese restaurant in Brooklyn's Fort Greene/Myrtle Street neighborhood. Based on photos he took and sketches, he has created extremely realistic watercolors (worthy of a gallery show) that capture a day in the life of the take out restaurant through the eyes of the fictional son of the restaurant's owners. The inside front and back covers, alone, are worth buying the book for. They consist of the recreated takeout menus from the restaurant (with reasonable prices). The book opens with a young boy waking up on a Saturday to help out at the restaurant. As the shutters are still closed on the take out shop, the cooks receive deliveries, chop and dice, and chop some more. Menus get folded, water gets boiled, woks get washed. Customers arrive, and the whole family, cousins and uncles included, all help out. Interesting neighbors pop in, including a fire truck and its engine company crew, all ordering various favorite dishes. Who knew so much work went into the preparation of your child's take out Moo Goo Gai Pan? Later, it is evening, the neon lights comes on, and it's time for the family to order their own dinner for takeout and delivery... What will it be?? Read and find out. This is a must read for parents and their kids as they wait for their dinner to be delivered
