Book Description

This newbie's guide to Ubuntu lets readers learn by doing. Using immersion-learning techniques favored by language courses, step-by-step projects build upon earlier tutorial concepts, stimulating the brain and increasing the reader's understanding. It also covers all the topics likely to be of interest to an average desktop user, such as installing new software via Synpatic; Internet connectivity; working with removable storage devices, printers, and scanners; and handling DVDs, audio files, and even iPods. It also eases readers into the world of commands, thus allowing them to work with Java, Python or other script-based applications; converting RPMs to DEB files; and compiling software from source.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent choice for Linux/Ubuntu beginners.......2007-10-07

This book is simplistic and goes step by step. Please understand, it will try to give you a basic/intermediate understanding of Ubuntu and try to teach some things about Linux. It is not trying to teach you Linux itself. Just Ubuntu...a particular 'flavor' of Linux.

I agree with a previous review that this book could have used more pictures, diagrams, visuals. Technical direction without pictures is cruel to the geekiest of people. So, that is why I gave it 4 stars. Also, this book does not go deeply enough into setting up, backing up and protecting your partitions and files. Things that are crucial to know because if done properly, can save you hours of pain! Something Windows users are very familiar with and trying to escape.

Tired of the restrictions and lack of performance from Windows? Tired of needing new, powerful hardware to satisfy Windows' bloated code? Tired of paying money for extra software like cd/dvd burning tools, backup software, MP3 ripping and burning, tired of shelling out $250 to $600 for Microsoft's Office Suite? Come over to Linux!! No digital rights management or privacy invading issues, no network connection restrictions, no slow degraded performance due to not having a brand new computer!!

Yes, it takes time to learn and will require some effort on your part...but the rewards are well worth it.

5 out of 5 stars This is the book I've been looking for for years!.......2007-08-30

I've tried to figure out Linux many times before but could just never get it. This book is remarkable. If you're a Linux guru this is not the book for you (it's far too simplistic for a Linux guru), but if you are a person running Windows that is sick of how poorly it performs and how much software costs, and want to switch over to a far superior operating system while making your computer faster, more secure, and never spending a penny of money on software again, this is the book for you. This book is written in plain English for people that aren't computer geeks, and is very easy to understand. It quickly gets you up and running on Ubuntu Linux (which you can download fore free) and them BAM - you're up and running. Everything is easy, works GREAT, and is FREE!!!

This is the book I've ben searching for for years.

5 out of 5 stars Best guide for geeks and non-geeks alike.......2007-08-16

Book was extremely easy to follow and helped with every aspect of setting up my new OS. Although I will have to retain Windows for some of the programs I run, Ubuntu will be my main operating system.

1 out of 5 stars Find another way.......2007-08-05

I've been trying to install the software all weekend but my system freezes every single time at screen 1/7 (select language) although to be fair, I got to screen 2/7 once before it froze.

Save your money and order the free CD from the Ubuntu website. By the way, there is no website (that I've been able to find) that provides support.

I'm definitely a non-geek so maybe I'm missing something but this book/CD was meant for non-geeks wasn't it?

4 out of 5 stars Unbuntu for Non Geeks Great Book for Beginners.......2007-08-03

This is a great book for newbies to Unbuntu Linux. It could have a few more pictures and illustrations. The author knows his subject but he could go a little more in depth as there are thing he assumes you know and if I would have come straight from Windows to Ubuntu I would have had a hard time conprehending certain things. Overall it is one of the best books on Linux I found. I also read his Linux for Non Geeks.

Book Description

Drawing on her own long-term research and extensive work experience, Janice Klein reveals how the power of people (insiders who are able to see problems from outsider's perspective), approach ("pulling change"), and system (support infrastructure) combine to turn new ideas and concepts into institutionalized practices. In particular, certain people inside organizations "outsiders on the inside" are key to driving innovation, adaptation, and real change. Using examples from leading companies in MIT's Leaders for Manufacturing (LFM) and System Design and Management (SDM) Partnership -- such as Boeing, Intel, Motorola, Alcoa, Ford, Kodak, and others -- she shows how employees at all levels can learn how to become "an outsider on the inside," and be in the right place at the right time to discover opportunities to "pull" into their organization. Throughout, we grow to understand the perspectives of numerous "outsiders on the inside," by hearing their voices and observing their actions. The strategy Klein provides is relevant for any company that hopes to build a change capability, rather than attempt only to manage change.

Organization is a breeze with these great tips. Best of all, they are very easy to implement in your own home.

5 out of 5 stars must read for two wage-earner households.......2007-01-05

Today, with both members of many households working, organization at home is a must if we are to have any leisure time at all to enjoy. Laura's tips for getting things done at home and organizing your life are to the point, practical, and, most importantly, easy to remember and easy to implement. Laura has provided numerous articles for OfficeOurs magazine, all of which have been very popular with our office manager and office worker readers. There is good reason she is in such demand as a speaker and we are looking forward to her keynote presentation at our annual office manager conference and future articles and books.

5 out of 5 stars These books are actually fun to read, and the ideas are easy to implement! .......2006-08-11

I have two of her productivity books, and recently saw her speak. I can only say this- she knows her stuff! Her systems are lifesavers and best of all she lives by the systems she teaches. Her books are the most fun read of any 'organizer'type books I have found (I have shelves of them that I started but never finished because they bored me or made no sense).

Recently I had the opportunity to be at a training where Laura spoke on organization and finding more time, I attended two of her sessions and they were incredible. She has a terrific sense of humor and so many great examples. And unlike those speakers who spend their time selling their merchandise or systems, you really know she is there because she wants to help people enhance their ability to get organized. I highly reccomend her as a speaker for any event you have.

5 out of 5 stars Help for overwhelmed moms and dads.......2006-07-16

This book is a great resource for anyone who is overwhelmed by the stuff of life. I'm a work-at-home mom, but I'm extremely organizationally challenged. Because my "work" and my "home" all involve a multitude of jobs, I'm constantly sidetracked and distracted. I run around a lot, but often have little show for it. I did like "Leave the Office Earlier", but "Find More Time" was really what I was looking for as it covers everything that clogs up my brain and helps me sort it out with easy to follow tasks. I saw myself in the section about how "to-do's" are often "projects" and don't get done because they require too many steps. Now, my challenge is to implement and USE the ideas offered by Laura.

Book Description

A guide to attracting, recruiting, interviewing, and hiring the best technical talent.

The top software developers are ten times as productive as average developers. Ten times. You can't afford not to hire them. But if you haven't been reading Joel Spolsky's books or blog, you probably don't know how to find them and make them want to work for you.

In this brief book, Joel reveals all his secrets--from his years at Microsoft, and as the co-founder of Fog Creek Software--for recruiting the best developers in the world. You'll learn:

If you've ever wondered what you should be looking for in a resume, if you've ever struggled to decide whether to hire someone at the end of an interview, or if you're wondering why you can't find great programmers, stop everything and read this book.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Building great teams.......2007-09-29

Another great book by Joel outlining his experience in hiring and building great software development teams. As with prior publications, a lot of the content is taken directly from his personal blog, but the book is well worth the investment. As a startup founder I found a lot of invaluable advice for hiring, screening and building the team culture. Both managers and software developers looking for a great job search strategy will definitely benefit from reading this book!

5 out of 5 stars Quick and enjoyable.......2007-08-11

I started thumbing through this book at a local bookstore and then decided I had to read the rest. This book covers some great principles in finding the right people to get work done correctly. Joel focuses on programming exclusively, but the same methods he covers will certainly work in nearly any IT position, and probably most technical professions across the board.

The author does a super job of making a dry subject very entertaining and offers very knowledgable methods, ideas and processes for finding the right people to make your company better. My wife even read part of it and enjoyed some of the humor and stories found within.

I loved the idea of treating programmers like Rock Stars, and will quickly be showing a copy of this to my management team!

The book also acts as a good benchmark for you and your company, even if you're not in a position to directly hire/fire someone. I was able to see what my company is doing right, and where there is certainly some room to improve.

5 out of 5 stars Best programmers = Best Software = Profit.......2007-07-31

Joel bases the entire book on one key premise: "The problem with using a lot of mediocre programmers instead of a couple great ones is that no matter how long they work, they never, ever produce something as good as what the great programmers can produce." He spends the first entire chapter building his case for this premise, and in my opinion hits some strong chords with his reasoning, showing that there are some facts to back up his assertion that mediocre talent, no matter how many of them there are, will never generate something like the iPod.

The meat of the book is about how to find and ultimately capture this rare and elusive "great talent" he speaks so highly of in Chapter 1. To his credit, Joel takes the time to provide the reasoning behind each of his directives, in a way that allows the reader to walk away feeling enriched with new ideas and possibilities rather than feeling like a dope for having interviewed folks the "wrong way" for so many years.

I found the last chunk of the book to be entertaining, though a bit choppy in spots. It seemed more like a quick add-on than a wrap-up. None the less, Joel comes through with some key "take away" points, as any good management books needs.

Regarding a few of the other reviewer's comments, I will suggest that those questioning Joel's non-comment on outsourcing or that he is living in the Dot-Com era, have perhaps missed the entire point of the book. Outsourcing cannot succeed if the ultimate goal is the make shrink-wrapped software that makes money. Why? Because any short-term savings gained by hiring five mediocre programmers to replace one great programmer will quickly be consumed by the drop in sales when the mediocre talent fails to come up with the mind-blowing features the great programmer used to on a regular basis.

And finally, Joel's recommended treatment of great programmers is only for great programmers. The idea is, if you only hire the best (not the really good ones, only the absolute BEST), then you can easily afford to treat them like royalty, a cost that will pay itself back many times over in the years to come.

1 out of 5 stars Lala land.......2007-07-30

Joel obviously is still living in the same fantasy land that he was in during the first essay that he speaks about in his book introduction. He's a very funny guy and sometimes you begin to wonder if the whole book is a joke. As a developer, an especially a Java developer I found the book to be ridiculous and nearly offensive.
The concepts he so broadly paints a picture with don't apply to any companies with the exception of perhaps the top 2% (if that) He's looking to bring in high school kids as interns?
He glosses over the real meat of the industry, system developers who don't work on the most cutting edge systems and who have to work for the big companies, with basically a side note when in fact these are probably the recruiters who are reading his book.
The book wreaks of the dot com days. I feel worse for having contributed my couple of bucks to his moronic campaign.

4 out of 5 stars A somewhat different view of hiring developers.......2007-07-22

This book represents Joel Spolsky's approach to hiring programmers. Smart and Gets Things Done is based on Spolsky's weblog, like his previous book, Joel on Software.

The main thrust of the book is to state that you should only hire the best. While many people would think this is reasonable and obvious, Joel takes the advice much farther than most. He describes in detail his methods for recognizing top talent, convincing them to join your company, and keeping them once you've got them. Joel is not talking about some useless slogan ("We hire only the best"), he is really talking about identifying the best and doing whatever is necessary to hire them.

His advice will probably annoy many managers and some people in human resources. Most programmers will probably love his advice. Whether the approach will work for a company different than Joel's is another question altogether.

One surprise to me was the fact that this book contained new material that was not on Joel's weblog. The book is extremely readable. Whether you agree with Joel or not on the specifics of his approach, the book is definitely worth reading if you are involved in any way with hiring software developers. It will give you insight into the people that you are innovating and show glimpses of what you may be competing with.

    Book Description

The author of Lean Enterprise Leader has two ambitious goals. First, he seeks to explain to top managers who want to eliminate bureaucracy, operate more cost-effectively, and push decision-making to those closest to a situation, how to transition from a hierarchal-pyramid structure to one that operates though interlocking, empowered teams. One logical time to undertake this leap forward into the twenty-first century, he says, is when downsizing becomes necessary due to cost pressures or increased competition since the new organization will require 25 to 40% fewer workers. He outlines a participatory approach, which involves as many employees as possible based on the theory is that people who have a hand in deciding a course of action are likely to do their best to make it work.

Second, the author explains to newly-selected team leaders how to transition from "command and control" managers into coaches who work to bring out the best performances possible from team members. A system is also outlined that when put in place aligns a team's objectives with top management's objectives and provides a tracking mechanism. The system also insures work is shared equitably by all, that each team member is held accountable for commitments made, and using a carrot and stick approach, that deadlines are met.

For a relatively thin volume (144 pages), the book is surprisingly thorough in achieving both goals--although the author does say that outside help in making the transition to a flat organization will probably be helpful, as will training for team leaders in order to reinforce principles set forth in the book.

    Book Description

Most people in organizations tend to manage projects either as realists or humanists. You Don't Have to Do It Alone brings together the practical view of the realist and the people-oriented view of the humanist, combining the best of both approaches into one role: the "Pragmatic Involver." Covering everything from solving a nagging long-term problem at work that could save a company millions of dollars, to launching a community movement to improve local schools, the book shows how involving others in a project while maintaining one's focus on the nuts-and-bolts details can make big things happen. Using the authors' six major questions - each of which is explored in detail - You Don't Have to Do It Alone shows how success can be attained in a project on any scale, from redesigning a manufacturing process at a paper mill to creating an effective youth center.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars You Don't Have to Do It Alone: How to Involve Others to Get Things Done.......2007-07-16

You Don't Have To Do It Alone is the perfect resources for those looking to organize small or large community or other volunteer projects. This book takes the reader through all of the questions he or she should ask in order to determine if help is needed on a particular project. The reader is then guided through decisions about what skill groups are required for the job, deciding which individuals should be invited to join the project, and how to go about recruiting these particular people. This book even gives the reader some tips on how to keep the project on task while keeping participants happy and motivated.

You Don't Have To Do It Alone gives the potential project organizer some real useable tools to help make his or her project a success. These resources are versatile enough to use for a small hands on project or a larger project where the project manager must depend almost entirely on delegation of tasks. There are also several charts and checklists that the reader can use to plan, keep organized, and make best use of his or her resources.

5 out of 5 stars The guide to working with others to accomplish your goals!.......2005-04-05

The book's subtitle gives the jist of its message. Its chapters address five fundamental questions: What kind of involvement is needed? How to know whom to include? How to invite people to become involved? How to keep people involved? How to finish the job? A chapter is devoted to meetings. A final chapter, "Where to Start," provides several options. The book includes helpful chapter checklists. This reviewer was fortunate enough to hear one of the authors, Robert W. Jacobs (aka Jake) present his ideas in person to the Human Resources Knowledge Network (see HRconsultant.com), and was impressed with the power of the approach this book offers. Without question, this is a terrific practical guide to getting the right people involved and achieving your goals, whether in business or other realms of life.

    4 out of 5 stars Insightful !.......2005-02-24

This book is great reading for anyone who wants to get more done through team or group efforts, from peer or cross-functional work teams to groups of volunteers. If you initiate or lead a project, this thorough guide takes you all the way through, beginning with your first decision: determining whether you should do your project alone or involve additional people. It helps you consider the trade-offs involved and the advantages and disadvantages. Then the four authors - Richard H. Axelrod, Emily M. Axelrod, Julie Beedon and Robert W. Jacobs, all organizational development consultants - lead you step by step through the process of finding the right people, inviting them to participate, getting them excited, keeping them involved and celebrating successes both along the way and when the project is done. We recommend this book to anyone who has to coordinate a group effort, from managers to corporate presidents. Almost anyone who does not work alone could benefit from applying the concepts in this book.

5 out of 5 stars A short fast read of condensed wisdom.......2004-12-14

Most of us want to get involved with other people. There is a definite limit as to what you can do by yourself. This may be from the sheer magnitude of the task at hand, or it may be from a lack of skills. None of us can do everything it takes a team to have a sports team, to run a business, to have a church.

This slim little book is about getting others involved and moving along the way you want them to go. And if you really want the brief version, the checklist in Appendix A pretty well summarizes up the whole thing.

Bismark, I believe, said that people want to be led and it's the same in business or in starting a community theater. It takes someone with the idea, and the willingness to stick to it through the end, and the people skills to make it happen.

Here in this little book is the condensed wisdom of people who have made things happen. It's an easy fast read, and it should be read before you start something.

5 out of 5 stars Worth twice the price.......2004-11-18

For 25 years and depending on my locale, I called myself a professional organizer, the archangel of lost causes, or the feminist with files. Now I work for an agency, and I read this book on the plane from Boston where I attended a conference of the American Association of Grants Professionals. Whether you are organizing a shelter for battered women, writing a community arts grant, planning for a change in public policy, acting as an officer in a community action agency, or heading a committee at your local church there is good advice here for you. I've done these things and even more oddball tasks and wish this book had come out earlier. It places a lot of information in one place that is useful for almost any manager.

If you just have time to check out the tools, they are indexed in the back and are well worth the price of the book and then some. In addition to gleaning bits from the chapters to meet my department's management objectives, I am planning to read selections from the "For Further Learning" list. The emphases on inclusion and transparency are among the finer principles that should be encouraged in any organization. The book is well written, concise and easy to use.

5 out of 5 stars Beginner Bottoms? This is the first book you should read!.......2002-11-20

This 2001 edition of what I consider to be a classic BDSM book is expanded and improved. An additional 69 pages (I don't think that was on purpose) covers changes in the community and resources that are available. It focuses not solely on how to get what you want as a bottom but also how to give your top what they want -- this balance of advice can be difficult to find but Easton and Liszt have done a great job here. There are 10 different chapter that cover everything from basic "how do I feel about this" to "how to do X" to more rare and less physical aspects of some peoples' scenes. It is not geared toward any gender or orientation except it does not cover 24/7 or TPE couples in any way -- but those are advanced subjects and practices anyway. This is a book I have both bottoms and tops read in my household and among those I recommend books to. If you haven't read it, please do so even if you've been doing this for 40 years you can learn something or see something in a new light.

      1 out of 5 stars huh?.......2002-01-23

      I looked at it once.
I didn't like the drawings which are the only illustrations in it. THey are just too silly, I din't take them seriously.

Its more a story than information book.
I was disappointed with it and it is gone now.
Don't waist your money, there are better books out there.

Catherine & Dossie give us another great book. It is short and concise and very helpful. The sections on the psychological effects are particularly well explained. Also full of great info for Tops... my Mistress loved it too... it helped us discuss what my needs were and what she expected of me... I consider it required reading for Tops and bottoms....

      5 out of 5 stars A Must Have Book.......2007-10-01

The difference between clutter and organization has to do with our habits and our systems. This book really inspired me to let go of old habits and old possessions and develop new systems of organization. There were plenty of ideas and real life eamples to follow. I would recommend this book to anybody.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent focus on root causes of procrastination.......2007-06-04

Great reminders of how to be more organized and effective. Brief, to the point and accessible. I especially found the focus on the many causes of procrastination very useful.

5 out of 5 stars Is this about my desk?.......2007-03-04

After reading Sue Brenner's book "the naked desk" I looked at my own desk and shouted an internal scream. Did she have a 6th sense that she knew that she was talking about "our" desk? My husband who never obsesses as much as I do just said that he was "lamenting the laminate." I said, "What laminate?"

My standard line is that I accumulate a lot of very important pieces of paper and I will "file" them on top of my desk until I get to them (two months later). I am the queen of procrastination and not proud of it. It is compounded by the fact that my husband works from home and on a daily basis has pilesw of "important" papers.

We took Susie's advice and took one pile at a time. We filed and made new files. We thought about how to name the files so that we would remember them. With Sue's practical advice we went through the desk and "voila" we finally found the laminate.

this book is not just about uncluttering your desk, it's about uncluttering your attitude, about realizing a more proactive approach to work and creating an all-around more empowered relationship with work. completely liberating!!

5 out of 5 stars Easy step-by-step help for getting organized.......2007-02-18

I like this book for it's easy to read information. It's like a how-to manual with nicely bulleted points and step-by-step directions for getting from a chaotic office (and life) to a more organized one. It also goes deeper than other books on this subject that I've read. Rather than merely treating the symptoms, Brenner delves into the "why" of disorganizational habits. I highly recommend this book to anybody who wants to declutter his/her office and never go back again.
