4 out of 5 stars Great statistics resource.......2007-05-01

I purchased this book as a requirement for my statistics class in the MBA program a few years ago. The textbook does not provide lengthy explanations or theories behind the methods but does provide excellent examples and solves problems showing each step. In addition to the book, the accompanying PhStat Excel add-in is excellent and very easy to use. The Excel add-in is also very handy should you need statistics in `real-life' (must better than whipping out a book). These two elements combined with an excellent teacher can be very effective. As with any statistics book, if you are not mathematically inclined, this book may seem difficult to understand.

1 out of 5 stars All Around the Mountain..........2006-06-21

This book is mind-numbing, as are statistics in general. The authors used a lot of words to communicate their message, taking you "all around the mountain" to get where you need to be. You must do a lot of filtering while reading to get to the subject matter and understand the concepts.

1 out of 5 stars horrible.......2005-10-08

this is one of the worst books I have ever encountered. if you actually want to LEARN statistics or any kind of math analysis, stay clear from this book. Conceptual explanation of the material is ABSENT. you will not learn anything except how to follow certain directions on excel. if you want to be more than just a low level manager who just follows directions, but one who actually wants to MAKE directions, then this book is not for you.

Really, this book is horrible.

5 out of 5 stars Good job.......2005-09-20

Fair seller. Communicated well. Hammered out settlement of my complaint. No regrets. Would purchase from again.

Book Description

Focusing on the analysis of data using modern statistical and spreadsheet software, Hildebrand and Ott emphasize making sense of data and discuss not only how a statistical method is applied, but why and why not. Throughout the book, the authors integrate computer use into the development of statistical concepts, emphasizing the value of looking at data to make sure the right questions are being asked. The real-life applications and examples throughout challenge students to think like managers. The case that concludes every chapter asks students to deal with a relatively unstructured situation and to explain the statistical reasoning in nontechnical language. Modern statistical methods, including resampling and bootstrapping are included. In addition, the authors emphasize quality control and improvement throughout the book and include three full chapters on regression and correlation methods.

1 out of 5 stars The worst one among intro statistics books........2004-07-11

My MBA class (top 20 program)used this book. But even my instructor did not recommend us to read this book. Instead he just taught class with his own hand-out. We only used this book for exercise problems. There were students who had many years of research experience. But they even complained about this book and recommended me to read Anderson's " Statistics for Business and Economics". Anyway, I think if you have a good instructor it is O.K. Otherwise I am sure that it will be very painful. Gook luck.

1 out of 5 stars wow.......2004-01-29

You better hope you have a good teacher. Don't use it as a last resort to study, if you can even find where a certain topic starts, its nearly impossible to follow.

1 out of 5 stars The Worst Book on the Planet.......2003-04-11

DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK!
This by far the worst book I have come accross in my life.
I am a mechanical engineer taking statistics for my MBA. Fortunately I have a very good intstructor so I dont even use the book.
Its worthless. Seems like the author is talking to himself.

1 out of 5 stars The worse book about statistics.......2003-02-01

Do NOT buy this book. I am sure the author understands a lot about statistics but he definitely does not know how to organize its ideas. The book makes the subject appear much more complex than it really is. If you need to learn statistics are not a Statistics PhD student then what I really recommend you to do is to get another book. For MBA students: This book is way more complex than you will need to know for your studies.

1 out of 5 stars A muddled mess.......2002-06-19

It's hard to believe that a Wharton professor produced this book but I guess it's just proof that no school is perfect. I'm sure the authors understand statistical analysis but they have no clue how to organize the material or communicate what they know effectively. Honestly, even if you have learned the concepts for a chapter through another source this book can be hard to follow.

Want an example of the murky text? Try this typical run-on sentence quoted directly from the book. "In the same way, the normal random variable is an abstraction, because in theory any numerical value, negative as well as positive, is possible, and the probability histogram is a smooth, symmetric, bell-shaped curve." Try stringing together 800 pages of similar prose and you have an idea what awaits you here.

I watched an entire class including the professor disown this book because it was useless. Do yourself a favor and avoid this turkey if at all possible.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for any one interested in s/w metrics & mgmt........2002-10-25

Being a researcher in software metrics, I am really pleased to see a book that is suited for software managers with the correct level of detail in statistics. I particularly enjoyed reading the 4 chapters with case studies. Its a must have for anyone in the field of software metrics and measurement.

5 out of 5 stars A Software Metrics Must Have.......2002-10-06

This book has a powerful format that blends practical "how to" and common sense with the power and rigor of statistical analysis. I will use this book as a "primer" when implementing software metrics in the corporate arena. This book is a "must have" for anyone implementing a corporate software measurement program. I also wish I had this book in my graduate offerings for Software Development and Design. Existing software curriculums can be sadly lacking the foundations and fundamentals for software measurement and statistics. This book literally makes statistics easy, sensible, and straight forward even for the complexities of software development and technology.

5 out of 5 stars Metrics based process improvement.......2002-09-25

The book provides a solid approach towards dealing with software development project data. It is also written in an easy to understand style although the subject itself is far from easy.
This should provide software development managers with a well founded handle to get more grip on development efforts.

5 out of 5 stars Clearly written tutorial and fact book on SW metrics.......2002-06-30

If you're working in SQA or managing software development projects this book is an excellent introductory text to statistical analysis. Although I found "Measuring the Software Process" by William Florac and Anita Carleton to me a more in-depth book that book assumes that you've established a metrics program and that you already have a working knowledge of statistics.

What I like about this book is that it's a tutorial on the statistical skills and knowledge that you'll need, and it combines this learning goal with the basics of software metrics and how they can be employed to measure productivity, estimate projects, and manage costs and organizational quality. The core approach is data analysis, and the main tools that the book employs are multi-variate techniques, regression analysis and correlation and sensitivity tests. The author has a talent for clearly explaining a dry subject, and while it will take a good deal of effort to master the material because of its nature, the excellent writing and illustrations will make it easy to quickly grasp statistical fundamentals and put them to use.

The lessons are taught within the framework of four case studies that are realistic and apply to the real world. The case study topics are: productivity analysis, analysis of time to market factors, development cost analysis, and maintenance cost drivers. These cover the full range of both internal development and product-line software engineering. I especially like the inclusion of maintenance costs as a topic of study because this area contributes significantly to total costs of ownership, but is often overlooked.

As of the date of this review there are two primary books that address measurement from a statistical perspective: this one and Florac's and Carleton's "Measuring the Software Process". Deciding which is better is a matter of assessing your needs. The key strengths of this book is the tutorial nature and the wide range of case studies that are used to reinforce the learning. The key strengths of "Measuring the Software Process" is that it goes much deeper into analysis and also includes statistical process controls and other techniques that are present in highly mature development organizations. Regardless of which book you choose (or if you choose both), the information and knowledge to be gained is the foundation of SQA and best practices in project management.

1 out of 5 stars Poorly Written and Confusing.......2004-12-22

This book does not help with understanding statistics. The examples are confusing and often point out a problem but never solve or resolve the problem. Don't buy this book!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Undergraduate-Level Stats/Excel Book.......2003-11-02

This textbook combines good readability and yet is also relatively detailed. Statistics For Managers Using Excel 3E is well organized, with plenty of examples that make understanding the concepts easy. The problems at the end of the Chapter are excellent at drilling the concepts in student's heads, and the companion CD is also useful.

I will agree with the reviewers that mentioned the errors. There ARE some errors in this book, but overall compared to most other texts there are NOT a lot of them relatively speaking.

Overall, an excellent textbook for students taking a beginning undergraduate level Stats course.

1 out of 5 stars Blech - lots of errors, poor writing.......2003-09-13

I'm only through chapter 3, but I've found

* inconsistancies - not using the same term in the same manner; all through the chapter, it refers to class boundaries, but in the excersizes, they are called bins - you have to check out the solutions manual and figure out what they are asking for.

* circular definitions - using the term in the definition of the term you are describing (ie, frumious = being frumious)

* poor examples - when describing how to use an excel wizard to process data, it tells you to select E5:E12 - without describing what this range is supposed to be (bins? midpoints? data?)

* incorrect answers in the solution manual (some are right, some are not)

* PHStat does not function as specified in the book in all cases (ie, percentage polygons)

Frankly, the book is a big waste of cash, and should not be selected as a book to be used for statistics classes - unfortunately, neither the students nor the profs at the school I'm attending had a choice. I'm having a hard time believing this is a THIRD edition, with all the errors. Either the authors or the publishers can screw up on a first edition, but it takes an effort for both to do it, much less three times.

Too bad you can't give negative star reviews.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, I guess..........2002-12-22

There is a newer edition out. However, the good thing about this one is the fact that they got a good Excel Section.

1 out of 5 stars Bring on the confusion and mistakes.......2002-11-06

A worse textbook I have not seen. It's riddled with mistakes and misprints. The authors should be ashamed. The examples are virtually impossible to follow. Unfortunately, most students don't have a choice but if you do go with Statistical Techniques in Business and Economics (Mason, Lind & Marchal).

This is an excellent book for Managers or anyone studying statistics.Excel 2007 is being used extensively here which is a requirement for all stats students. There are some documentation errors or bugs with the calculations but they are minore. I hope the authors will rectify them in the next version.

4 out of 5 stars Good textbook for business managers.......2007-06-10

Though I have not yet gone through the entire textbook, it does appear to be strongly oriented toward business managers. I actually purchased this book for review since I already had a graduate level statistics class about 10 years ago. I like this book because it teaches business cases. Also, the emphasis on using MS Excel was a big reason why I chose this book. One negative is that the quality of the manufacturing of this textbook is not great. I noticed a defect soon after recieving the product. However, I chose to live with the defect rather than send it back to the manufacturer.

    Book Description

Based on a ten-year examination of control systems in over 50 U.S. businesses, this book broadens the definition of control and establishes a critical bridge between the disciplines of strategy and accounting and control. In addition to the more traditional diagnostic control systems, Simons identifies three new control systems that allow strategic change: belief systems that communicate core values and provide inspiration and direction, boundary systems that frame the strategic domain and define the limits of freedom, and interactive systems that provide flexibility in adapting to competitive environments and encourage organizational learning. These four control systems, according to Simons, will provide managers with the basic levers for pursuing strategic objectives.

I read this book when it was first published in 1994 and recently re-read it, curious to see how well it has held up. My conclusion? Very well indeed. What I find especially noteworthy is the fact that, only decade ago, there was nowhere near the understanding and appreciation of innovation that we have today. As I compose this brief commentary, Amazon offers 40,135 books on the general subject and 8,707 on innovation management. That is amazing.

In any event, Robert Simons wrote this book in order to explain "how managers use innovative control systems to drive strategic renewal." There is a paradox involving innovation that has always fascinated me: That innovation initiatives are most productive and lucrative when launched and then sustained within a stable (albeit flexible) environment. In other words, innovative thinking needs order, structure, discipline, etc. to which it can respond. There had to be a GE for Jack Welch to "blow up" when Reginald Jones selected him to become its CEO. The same was true of IBM when Lou Gerstner became its CEO. Moreover, another paradox, organizational renewal - if not transformation - requires control systems (key phrase) that are themselves innovative. In this volume, Simons focuses primarily on "the informational aspects of management control systems - the levers managers use to transmit and process inf0ormation within organizations. For the discussion to follow, I adopt the following definition of management control systems: [begin italics] management control systems are the formal, information-based routines and procedures managers use to maintain or alter patterns for organizational activities. [end italics]" More than a decade ago, Simons saw the need for a new theory of control that recognizes the need to balance competing demands. Such demands today are much more intense and in much greater numbers.

Simons suggests that an organization's strategy for control must (somehow) accommodate these "variables": belief systems which are used to inspire and direct the search for new opportunities; boundary systems which set limits of opportunity-seeking behavior; diagnostic systems which motivate, monitor, and reward achievement of specific goals; and interactive control, systems which stimulate organizational learning and the emergence of new ideas and strategies. I agree with Simons that any theory of management control must be evaluated according to criteria such as the extent to which the potentially important variables are included in the theory, the clarity of the linkage between control system variables and the achievement of organizational strategies, and the reliability and validity of the evidence. The "new theory of control" which Simons offers in this book fully accommodates such criteria.

I especially appreciate the provision of all manner of "figures" and "exhibits" which organize and illustrate clusters of key points and concept relationships that are analyzed in each chapter. These reader-friendly devices will later facilitate, indeed expedite review of Simons' key points. If reviewing nothing else in the book, busy executives should frequently check out the detailed "Checklist Summary" in Appendix A which identifies the WHAT, WHY, HOW, WHEN, and WHO of each of the four control levers and of the internal control systems which are fundamental to ensuring the integrity of data used in all control systems.

For me, some of the most valuable material is provided in Chapter 7, "The Dynamics of Controlling Strategy." Simons points out that strategic control "is not achieved through new and unique systems but through belief systems, boundary systems, diagnostic control systems, and interactive control systems working in concert to control both the implementation of intended strategies and the formation of emergent strategies. These systems provide the motivation, measurement, learning, and control that allow efficient goal achievement, creative adaptation, and profitable growth." Figure 7.3 on page 159 cleverly illustrates the dynamic relationships between and among an organization's core values, risks to be avoided, strategic uncertainties, and critical performance variables. "Managing the tension between creative innovation and predictable goal achievement is the key to profitable growth." Hence the importance of the four control levers that can enable managers to "direct collaborative enterprises toward their worthwhile goals."

Although published in 1994, this book offers even greater value today than it did then. Congratulations to Simons and on a brilliant achievement. As he explains so thoroughly and so eloquently, the extent to which innovative thinking is both productive and profitable will largely be determined by how well managers use innovative control systems to drive strategic renewal. I also highly recommend two of Simons' later works, Performance Measurement and Control Systems for Implementing Strategy and Levers of Organization Design.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic book on how to focus your organizational efforts .......2005-09-03

One of the key concepts in this book is how difficult it is to balance the company's need for predictable results with its need for innovation. How do you stay on track while being able to identify new opportunities? Dr. Simons emphasizes the scarcity of management attention and the importance of realizing there are too many "good ideas" to pursue. The countervailing levers he has identified, allow management to reduce risk in the right areas thus freeing the organization to achieve higher levels of productivity. Great book for seasoned leaders responsible for designing and implementing strategy.

4 out of 5 stars A great book for big picture seekers.......2000-05-28

Levers of Control presents a comprehensive theory illustrating how managers control strategy using 4 basic levers: belief systems, boundary systems, diagnostic systems, and interactive control systems (the whole book is based on these 4 levers). Simons shows how these control levers complement each other when used together and how effective top managers use these levers to stimulate and guide the search for strategies in the futures.

4 out of 5 stars Focus on strategy implementation.......2000-03-04

The book is far more interesting than the title suggests. "Levers of control" makes one think of man/woman being reduced to robots directed by the pulling of levers. The book is exactly about the opposite, how one can have his cake and eat it. It provides a practical framework on how to combine opposing forces in managing a company. Opposites like creativity and meeting profit objectives, precise objectives and alertness to the necessasity of changing course, reward and punishment, control and freedom. Some of the insights require reader effort to understand. For example. "Strategic planning is useless to develop strategies. Strategic planning starts once the strategy has been determined." What is meant is this. Long range planning carried out by staff departments trying to involve managers is a waste of time. Real strategies evolve interactively between several layers of managers in the organisation. Once a strategy is determined a plan must be made for implementing it. However the reader has to figure out that strategic planning no longer means strategy development but the development of a plan for strategy implementation, the execution of which has to be monitored. The book covers how to deal with the positive and negative motivations of employees, how it is possible to manage the tension between a budget system (referred to as a diagnostic system) and an action oriented intelligence-gathering system (referred to as an interactive control system). These two "control systems" are combined with two higher level "control systems", the vision and core values on the one hand and clarification of authority, accountability and no-go areas (referred to as boundary systems)on the other. None of these "control systems" are original. The originality of Prof Simons is that he shows how to operate these systems so that they reinforce and complement each other. This book is very useful for persons that have experienced how hard it is to implement strategies and to reconcile freedom with the requirement of delivering predictable financial results.

      Book Description

Amstat News asked three review editors to rate their top five favorite books in the September 2003 issue. Statistical Methods for Detection and Quantification of Environmental Contamination was among those chosen.

This groundbreaking volume describes the statistical theory that underlies the detection and quantification of environmental pollution both in the laboratory and in the field. It presents the foundation of relating measured concentrations to true concentrations and the development of intervals of uncertainty for true concentrations, and it presents a comprehensive review of the problem of estimating thresholds at which detection and quantification decisions can be made reliably.

The authors demonstrate the use of analytical measurements in making environmental impact decisions and in comparing environmental data to regulatory standards and naturally occurring background concentrations. Taking the next step in a major evolution in the way environmental impact decisions are made, Statistical Methods for Detection and Quantification of Environmental Contamination:

An indispensable handbook for scientists and engineers involved in environmental monitoring programs, this book is also an important resource for public health officials, waste facility managers, regulators, statisticians, and analytical chemists.
