Best Quality tools book for recommended readings in training.......2006-10-29
This is one of the best books I have ever reviewed. It is so easy to know the quality tools but understanding the tools is the key to effective implementation. The book provides a comprehensive review of all the tools in the quality profession with indexed case studies and applications. I use the quality tools while training Meirc participants on Total quality, six sigma, simplification of work processes and procedures in Dubai seminars and it is certainly has gained our participants lots of benefits on applying these tools. I would highly recommend this book for all quality professionals in the quality management and training.
As useful as it gets.......2006-05-28
This is just about the most relevant and useful quality book I have come across. It provides a comprehensive library of tools to use to solve different kinds of problems. Many of the tools covered in this book are covered elsewhere, but in this case the author has a knack for guiding the reader through a set-by-step process in a way that it was very easy for me to instantly apply the tools to my job.
I also welcomed the fact that the book covers the overall history of the different quality methodologies. This is important because there are many choices to be made when it comes to choosing a quality methodology, so knowing where a tool came from helps you determine whether it applies to your particular problem.
If your job relates to quality, this is money well spent.
A choice of a variety tools for quality.......2005-07-26
In updating this book, Tague has added more than 30 tools and several variations. This book gives easy to follow step by step instructions for the tools to be used. Second edition uses icons with each tool description which makes easy to identify the tool and the applications for the reader.
A book for the real world of problem solving !.......1999-05-06
This book is for the people that want to solve quality problems. For those of you that want to know the theory and never do anything with it but teach, would not want to read this book (no big words or long formulas). For the rest of us that are in the real world and need some structure to resolve quality problems (in the real world) GET THIS BOOK! It is a cookbook of how to USE these tools and when to use them. Best front line quality tool source I have ever seen (and I have 4 book shelves full of them).

Book Description
If you are responsible for designing, implementing, or managing a quality software program, this updated edition of the Practical Guide to Software Quality Management now identifies 10 major components that make up a solid program in line with ISO 9001 quality management precepts. Thoroughly revised and with new chapters on software safety and software risk management, this comprehensive primer provides you with the starting points for a standardized documentation system, and analyzes each individual program component separately, addressing in detail its specific role and overall importance to the system.
This is the only volume to offer a broad overview of software quality management for non-experts and experts alike. It is written in clear, easy-to-understand language and contains a complete glossary that demystifies technical terms, abbreviations, and acronyms. Useful appendices contain example and "starting point" documentation outlines. Moreover, every chapter features an extensive list of authoritative references directing you to the latest technical details on a variety of software quality management issues.
Customer Reviews:
Broad, shallow, and seems rather dated, but some useful stuff........2007-03-04
I've been in software development for over 20 years, and now I'm starting a full-time QA job, so I'm loading up on book about software quality management.
I'm sure glad I bought this used instead of new! It's great as a general overview of the basic software quality management concepts, but there's not a whole lot of depth here. It's a lot of "what to do" without much help on exactly how to do it, though I will say that the few sample forms and planning outlines are helpful.
On aspect of this book I found partucularly disappointing is that is seems dated. Sure enough, it was written just over ten years ago, before a lot of the current intranet deployed collaboration software became widely used. So, rather then start printing all those forms you need to run your software QA system, just put them on your "Quickplace" or "Sharepoint" workplace collaboration system.
So, this might be a good first book on software quality management, but it had better not be your last.
A solid addition to any SQA library........2005-12-25
This book won't win any awards for being flashy; however, it is a very well written introduction into the world of SQM. Well organized, with the key points consistently reinforced. A quick read that makes you hungry enough to pick up on the key points and explore them in more detail. If you're new to world of software quality, or only have a couple years worth of experience then this is a good purchase for you.
Decent, but Shallow Coverage of a Broad Topic.......2002-09-01
As stated in the introduction: "This book is a primer for those who need to understand the concepts as well as the value of software quality management...It is not intended to be a reference for the experienced software quality practitioner or the definitive text on how to accomplish all the software quality tasks available today." I agree with that statement. I found the coverage of each element to be shallow. I kept wanting more details from the author, but that would contradict with the intent of the book stated in the intro.
Horch identifies the aspects of a Software Quality System in the first chapter and elaborates upon them in a logical, sequential manner in the rest of the book. He ends with several outlines based on or adapted from IEEE standards. The thing that I disagree with the most is the author's statement in the Preface that "The audience for this book includes those who have been charged with the responsibility of creating and implementing a total software quality system in their organizations." The problem is that those people will already have a good understanding of the material presented in this book and as such, the book adds nothing to assist them in implemtating a software quality system beyond what they already have. I've gone back and forth between rating this book three or four stars. While I agree with the elements of a software quality system and their need I believe that this book fails to meet its goals.
Blueprint for 'building' a quality organization.......2001-07-07
After I finished reading this 259-page book I kept thinking of how it was organized and how the author presented the material. Although I have been exposed to, and worked within, quality frameworks throughout my 25-year career this book triggered a clarity that brought together the essence of an effective quality program. This happened when I drew an analogy between the book's contents and approach, and constructing a building.
First, the book starts with a chapter titled "Elements of a Complete Software Quality System," which is the foundation. It then covers what I think of as the building blocks: standards, reviews, testing, defect analysis, configuration management and software documentation. It then fills in gaps, much like mortar, by covering associated quality concerns. Each of these "building blocks" and the "mortar" are thoroughly discussed in separate chapters. The actual construction comes in the final chapter titled "Quality System Implementation".
This book is copiously illustrated and the writing is straightforward. Although my analogy may be somewhat distracting, nothing in this book is - each chapter stays focused on its topic and goes into considerable depth. The author provides you with a solid foundation, quality materials and a blueprint for creating an effective quality organization, and does so in 259 pages. This book earns five stars for the influence it had on my thinking, and has my highest recommendation.
Practical and easy to put in use.......2000-04-04
+ve points: Gives practical guidelines to develop your own quality assurance plan. Useful for small to medium size projects. -ve points: SEI-CMM should have been covered in greater detail. an introduction to 6-sigma would have been useful. Not scalable to larger projects.

Book Description
The facts behind the addictive medical drama starring Golden Globe winner Hugh Laurie.
Week after week, House, M.D. has held viewers' attention with brilliant cast performances and intriguing diagnostic mysteries often solved with daring treatments. But how much of the medical detail is real and how much is fabricated? In The Medical Science of House, M.D., Andrew Holtz, a well-known medical journalist, reveals how medical detectives work-how they follow symptoms to their source. He examines each case in detail and provides answers to such questions as:
- How can a teenager adopted at birth nearly die because his biological mother didn't get a vaccine?
- How can a husband's faith in his wife's fidelity determine whether radical treatment will cure her or kill her?
- How can a missed eye-doctor appointment reveal a genetic disease?
- How can doctors choose the right course for a pregnant woman when one may kill her and the other would abort her fetus

The Medical Science of House, M.D........2007-09-16
The Medical Science of House, M.D.
In attempt to ride off the Fame of The "House, M.D.," series this book tries and fails to draw parrallels between actual medical conditions and vague references to the series. The author probably felt that the book and its contetents did not have sufficient merit to go it alone. It may make a good read, but it does not truly establish a bond with the series that author had hope to capture and nurture.
Horrible book, awesome TV show........2007-07-27
I was expecting science (I guess the title threw me), but this book is just a boring lecture on everything you already know about medicine (even if all you know is from TV). This is a pathetic attempt to mooch off the success of a great television show. If you feel you really have to have this book, do yourself a favor and wait a few weeks--it's bound to be in the bargain bins or the dollar stores.
Not the book I expected........2007-06-13
I had high hopes for this book when I saw the writeup on Amazon. And was I disappointed. Gotta agree with the person who says this is opportunistic. It's basically a rehash of a dozen POTWs (Patient of the Week) and nothing new.
If you want a better feel for how Dr. House might do it, check this book out. The first chapter reads like a House episode How Doctors Think
Not what i expected........2007-03-29
It's a great book for people who are interested in medicine. It 's not for medical doctors...
Interesting Stuff.......2007-03-16
You should know that this book is not a glossy guide to "House MD." But if you're looking to enhance your knowledge of some of the medicine in the show, it's a great read. It also addresses how Greg House might fare in the real world.

Customer Reviews:
Low on substance.......2007-08-19
The reviews for this book are so overwhelmingly positive, I figured it *must* be good. Bad assumption! I gleaned very little usable information from this book. The author uses far too much space defining terms, relating her own experiences, and trying to be cute.
Even worse, as another reviewer noted, the author's tone is a bit condescending. Despite her purported years of experience as a professional organizer, she doesn't seem to have a good handle on what causes people to develop clutter problems. Her extensive use of coined words is annoying. The material is poorly organized, jumping around at times. Also, the writing drags in places; it could have used a more thorough editing. Overall, the writing and material presented is of low quality.
For example, in a chapter on how to clear out sentimental clutter, the author's advice can be distilled into one largely unhelpful sentence, "Save only objects that evoke pleasant or poignant feelings; don't keep anything that makes you feel stressed or upset." Okay, that makes sense, but is that really going to do me any good? I could have used suggestions on how to mentally unhook objects from memories. Then the author goes on to introduce terms such as "clutterabilia" and "memorabiliac." (And she's just getting started! Watch out for "paperosis" and "redundabundance.") Is having a coined word going to solve anything?
In dealing with the fear of getting rid of something and then regretting it, the author admonishes, "If you do find yourself grieving over the loss of something that was never alive to begin with, you need more help than I can give you, and I urge you to seek counseling." At this point, I think she has dismissed most of her readers. She continues without compassion, "Your regrets are...a poor excuse for you to keep hanging onto clutter." Tough love?
Some people might find the author's tone helpful, but I was totally put off by it. I would recommend a thorough perusal of the excerpt available online before investing in this book. It should have been a giveaway to me that so many copies are available used. Maybe the sellers took the author's suggestion to only hold onto things that are useful.
IMPORTANT BOOK GREAT IDEAS. .......2005-10-22
Well organized. Strong on the HOW TO. I purchased an additional 10 books to give to friends and family. Easy read. Importand information for my senior clients as well. Thanks for asking.
Let Go Of Clutter.......2005-10-02
Book arrived in a timely fashion and was in good condition.
Letting go is hard to do...........2003-08-19
Conquer your clutter. Stop being a slave to your stuff. Understand why it's so hard to get rid of things.
What would your life be like if you could accomplish these three things? How much happier would you be? How much more peaceful would your life be?
Author Harriet Schechter gives you a step-by-step solution in her book, Let Go of Clutter.
In the first chapter, Why Letting Go is So Hard to Do, Schechter explains why we may be biologically programmed to accumulate, why the fear of regret keeps us from discarding stuff, and how society encourages us to gather more and more.
Chapter 4, Purging Paper and Preventing Piles, is another favorite chapter. The author walks us through the method she uses with her clients to quickly sort and purge paper piles. She recommends a File Index, and shows you how to set it up for your household.
The last part of the book looks to the future and explains how to keep your home clean once you've decluttered it.
This book is filled with lots of fill-in-the-blank forms and step-by-step pathways to take you from clutter-filled to clutter-free.
If your clutter is taking over and you've reached the end of your rope with no idea where to start, check out Let Go of Clutter.
GREAT BOOK!.......2003-04-27
Got a kid, then you understand the true meaning of the word pandemonium. I bought it for the wife hoping we could figure out how to clean up after "the kid" our 3 y/o son, and organize her accumilated junk(wife's a pack rat). Needless to say, she nor i read it through to the end, but the bit i read was an interesting approach. I still trip over tonka trucks & lego blocks, the insects need a treadmill and the newspaper pile is now a permanent corner structure. Maybe one day I'll finish the book....its a step in the right direction. Buy it.

Customer Reviews:
If you like lists, you'll love this book.......2005-06-24
Seven years ago we decided to build a house. I had never, ever heard one person who thought doing so was a good idea. I know the authors of this book seem hooked on horror stories, but it's all to the good because it's all true. In fact, by using the book's suggestions, we not only built a wonderful house, but our builder brought it in at $17,000 under budget. We've lived in the house for seven years and I've recommended this book to countless people. Don't know if it's been updated since I read it and things do change, but if you're a novice at homebuilding and don't want to be taken, this book should be number one on your reading and USING list.
Great Book!.......2004-09-26
I read three books: Cellers to Ceilings, Build It Right, and Your New House. All were good, but Your New House was by far the best of the three. Your New House was very thorough with information from beginning to end in building (and buying) a new home. Lots of information to protect the consumer and includes websites for additional information and products. Highly recommended reading!
Good Book...All questions were not answered.......2004-03-07
I am a first time buyer and wanted to make sure that I was getting the best deal at every end of the process. I read this book and although many parts of it were good, it did not apply to my situation. This book is excellent for those that are building a custom built home with a builder. If you are looking to buy a production home (centex, KB, pulte) this is not the book you will want. I found some of the examples to be informative, but overall I will need another book to answer my questions. I hope my review helped.
Essential.......2003-10-05
This is the single best homebuying book we've found. The section on binding arbitration clauses alone is worth the price of the book. Concise, sensible, at times overly cautious -- this book is a necessary skeptical foil to overenthusiastic homebuyers who may be getting themselves into a rotten home or rotten purchase agreement. No, it's not perfect. I'm sure some of the technical information is incorrect. All homebuying books suffer this problem. But the 1-star reviews of this book are inconceivable. Perhaps they were written by shady builders or sellers who are upset that this book is scaring away unwary buyers?
Very Helpful.......2003-10-03
I recently purchased a new home with my husband. After having problems with our new house in several areas, I decided that for the collge speech class I was taking that I would choose the topic of "researching before you buy a new home." This book was among the five books that I purchased on this subject. It was by far the most helpful and easiest to understand. I will be using it as a Bible the next time we are looking at new houses.
Keep in mind that there are better books if you need mortgage or real estate document information. However, this book was the best for giving you information how how to choose your house and neighborhood.

Healthy House Building for the New Millennium

Book Description
At last...a book that takes all the mystery out of ventilation! Understanding Ventilation is the only book that covers all aspects of exchanging the air in houses: infiltration, equipment selection, design, heat-recovery ventilators, sizing, costs, controls, whole-house filters, distribution, and possible problems that a ventilation system can cause--all in easy-to-understand language.
Customer Reviews:
A breath of fresh air.......2003-09-07
I read this book and found the answer I was looking for. My 1957 home had been upgraded and insulated so well that it was acting as a bottle. Basically my indoor humidity was up at past 65% RH and my poorly insulated exterior walls were getting down to the low 50F in the colder months of the SF Bay area. No one could explain why I was getting mold in my closets. I found this book at an architectural book store and everything clicked. I may be the first person to install a ventilation system on my type of home but I had the confidence to do so after reading this book. Now I have a well ventilated home and no more mold. Thanks you!!!
A Holistic Approach to VENTILATION.......2001-02-14
I recently went "house-hunting" with some relatives and quickly realized that they were focused exclusively on floor plan issues like the number of bedrooms, the square footage, and the presence of trees on the lot. It disturbed me that they were neglecting any consideration of the critical role that ventilation plays in creating a healthy home environment. Like so many other homebuyers, they were adhering to a philosophy of "ventilation by default." Then and there, I decided to give them a copy of John Bower's extraordinary book UNDERSTANDING VENTILATION, as an early house-warming gift.
Bower understands how houses breathe and he communicates his expertise succinctly and authoritatively. He take a holistic approach to a house, viewing it as an organism consisting of interconected parts. He equates the ventilation system with the lungs of the structure. Houses built without a stratgically designed ventilation system are like sleep apnea patients, who breathe erratically and unevenly. Bower's approach teaches us how to build systems that have controlled, efficient, intentional ventilation.
In the theatre, the term "triple threat" describes someone who can sing, dance and act. In the area of building science, John Bower is a quadruple threat. He is a building ecology expert of very high calibre; he is a skilled writer; he is a talented teacher; and he is a compassionate 'sick house doctor' who can diagnose and prescribe strategies that heal.
Bower's style is masterful, clear, concise and very readable. The diagrams are illustrative and demonstrate the author's welcome sense of humor. The information is easily accessible for those who would prefer to use the book as a quick reference. The numerous appendices (abbreviations, glossary, bibliography, organizations, equipment sources) alone, make the price of the book a bargain.
If you are a homeowner (or a prospective one) and if concepts like infiltration, air exchange, positive / negative air pressure, source control and ventilation make you roll your eyes in the back of your head, then this is a 'must have' book for you.
"Understanding Ventilation" Not Installing Ductwork.......2000-03-30
Proper housing ventilation, the kind that helps maintain healthyindoor air quality (IAQ)is a poorly understood subject. John Bower's book is an excellent "teacher" for the layperson as well as a "continuing educational seminar" for the industry insider. It breaks down the concept of proper ventilation in an easy-to-read format while it presents a new paradign for industry workers familiar with installing ductwork but who may not have time to keep current with trade magazines. This book illuminates aspects of proper ventilation that are often overlooked such as how pollutants get into your house in the first place and provides workable guidlines to achieve solutions. It would be ridiculous to assume that any book would have the concrete answers to every possible IAQ problem, but where this book succeeds is in its ability to involove the reader in the solution to his or her own home's individual IAQ problems. END
Not a duct design or sizing manual.......1999-06-16
Over-hyped. If your goal is to come away with the ability to design and install actual ventilation systems, i.e. ductwork, try again. Little accurately re-design or modify my existing ductwork. I actually spoke with the publisher before purchasing this book, and was assured this topic was covered!
If you know of a book which addresses duct sizing and layout for the layperson, please email me!

An excellent introduction to software fault-tolerance.......2005-11-08
Read this book.
I mean, read this book if you need to get your hands on software fault-tolerance, one of the big things that make the software you write better.
The book shows you the techniques you could use so that your programs keep working in presence of failures. In few words it's all about having redundancy in software - different variants of software components doing same things which then somehow reach consensus on what's right and what's not.
The basics are simple, it took me two days in the middle of reading to write a solid class framework in Python covering most (if not all) the discussed techniques. And you know what ? It worked !
On the other hand, the basics may be simple, but the details are not. There are quite a few interesting details that you wouldn't guess beforehand.
The author finds the right balance of explaining the stuff so that it's simple to understand but detailed, mathematically rigorous and technical enough.
The author has her doctorate thesis on the subject. The funny thing is though, the chapter that has to do with her doctorate thesis area of research (5.3.2. Two Pass Adjudicators and Multiple Correct Results) explicitly leaves the topic unexplored. It starts like "there is 9 kinds of this stuff, let's discuss the first" and you sit deeper in your chair ready for a big thing to come, but after explaining the first flavour it suddenly goes "ok, you've had it, the rest can be found in [reference]", where reference points to the thesis. This is not bad, because you've already got the basic idea, simply amusing.
The book is overly redundant to be read from it's first page to the last, and this fact is clearly mentioned in the introduction. Upon reading about a half I found myself skipping pages saying "yeah, yeah, I got it already". For example, among the discussed say 30 techniques, each can be such and such, and then such and such, leaving 4 buckets in which each individual thing can fall. Moreover, these taxonomies correlate, making just about 3 buckets. But each technique's advantages, performance problems etc. are described in full again and again, so it goes like "A is B and as such it inherits all B's pro's and con's". Simple, but it's two pages worth of text, and a large table. It may be good for reference, but not for thorough reading.
Same thing with samples - the sample for a simple technique could be couple a pages of text plus a flowchart diagram plus a table with a state diagram. Very very very very very clear already. But then again, it's pleasant to have such a clear book for a change.
Anyhow, if you are a software developer interested in building high quality software (as you should), and you need an introduction to software fault tolerance, this book should not be missed.
