5 out of 5 stars Superb book........2007-06-15

This book provides an exceptional introduction to nonlinear dynamics. Math books are often trapped in equating rigor with formalisms and in compromising intuition to generalities. Strogatz book provides an exemplary guideline how both intuition and rigor may be served to transform a difficult topic into fun reading and highly applicable set of ideas. Here are the key elements of what you will find in this book.

A. The book builds up intuitive understanding of the key ideas of the field
from simple one dimensional dynamics to complex multi-dimensional behaviors.
B. Each chapter contains fascinating applications -- from fireflies synchronization and josephson junction to population dynamics and chaotic laser behaviors-- which are
fun to read and useful if you need to apply dynamics to solve research problems.
C. There are ample exercises and solutions to render this ideal book for self-learners. It provides a relatively broad coverage of the key ideas of the field, without taxing the reader with far corners of little interest.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for beginners.......2007-05-14

Nonlinear dynamics and chaos is an excellent introductory book. It explains this complex looking subject in very simple and intuitive fashion. I recommend this book anyone who are interested in chaos/nonlinear dynamics. It even doubles as a fun book!

4 out of 5 stars Great for an introduction but not for digging in for details.......2007-01-05

I think this is one of the best books for understanding the Phase Spaces and Bifurcations. It is really easy to follow and understand, even for people without background on nonlinear subjects. Yet, it is not the right book for engineers to read and start to solve their own detailed problems. People who seeks for a book to get into the subject or who wants to have a nice reference; BUY THIS BOOK. By the way, its price is reasonable.

5 out of 5 stars Shockingly Readable.......2007-01-04

I bought this book as a textbook for a class, and I have to say that it is a surprisingly readable math book. The class only used the first few chapters, but I find myself flipping through the rest of the book and trying to understand more advanced material. This is a good book for a scientist who needs to learn linear and nonlinear dynamics but is a little intimidated.

Keep in mind, this is a math book, and no writer can turn math into something it isn't. Still, the writer gives lots of relevant examples (especially in the problems--the only complaint I have is that the solutions in the back don't give any explanation, and these solutions are a bit sparse), and milks as much storytelling out of the subject matter as is possible. I thoroughly recommend it--it brings out the closet math geek in everyone!

5 out of 5 stars incredible!.......2006-06-13

This is probably the best math book I've ever read. Unlike other stuffy books, this one is very personable and informal. It is extremely readable, the explanations are crystal-clear and very intuitive and well-motivated, plus the author inserts a lot of humor (it's so nice to be reminded that mathematicians are humans). There are fascinating examples culled from applications.
I should note two things. First, it is not a proof-based book. It discuesses the cool theorems and gives intuitive justifications, but the author is clear that his goal is to build intuition and give experience with the techniques, rather than mathematical rigor (thankfully, he is honest about this and points to areas where more rigor could be introduced, rather than giving the unnatural and awkward hybrid of rigor and intuition attempted by many calculus books). Second, a lot of the problems (though certainly not all) deal with pathological and/or special cases, so it's possible for teachers to give fairly onerous homeworks.

Book Description

Linear and Nonlinear Programming is considered a classic textbook in Optimization. While it is a classic, it also reflects modern theoretical insights. These insights provide structure to what might otherwise be simply a collection of techniques and results, and this is valuable both as a means for learning existing material and for developing new results. One major insight of this type is the connection between the purely analytical character of an optimization problem, expressed perhaps by properties of the necessary conditions, and the behavior of algorithms used to solve a problem. This was a major theme of the first edition of this book and the second edition expands and further illustrates this relationship. Linear and Nonlinear Programming covers the central concepts of practical optimization techniques. It is designed for either self-study by professionals or classroom work at the undergraduate or graduate level for technical students. Like the field of optimization itself, which involves many classical disciplines, the book should be useful to system analysts, operations researchers, numerical analysts, management scientists, and other specialists from the host of disciplines from which practical optimization applications are drawn.

4 out of 5 stars Good book , but consider a used copy!.......2007-06-14

Luenberger's optimization book is very good and well worth having. However, it should be noted that the "new" 2004 edition published by Springer-Verlag is nothing more than an exact reprint of the 1984 2nd edition that was formerly published by Addison-Wesley. Accordingly, a good used copy may be more worthwhile than an overpriced "new" one.

This is the fourth such case I have come across wherein a publisher chooses to engage in such misleading marketing practices. The other three are "Engineering Optimization - Methods and Applications" by Reklaitis (1983), "Hydraulic Control Systems" by Merrit (1967), and "Dynamic Systems" also by Luenberger (1979). All three are now being sold as new publications by Wiley (according to Amazon). I suspect there are many other examples as well.

1 out of 5 stars The book is a Xerox.......2007-02-14

Looking from outside, the book seems very good. However, when you open the cover you are shocked by the press quality. It seems like the book just came from an illegal copy shop. Sometimes you can not read small indices in formulas. For a book having this context, a better press quality should be used. I could make a better copy with a copy machine. The paper quality is around average.

5 out of 5 stars A book on mathematics that also an engineer can read.......1999-11-25

I have profitably used the book to apply constrained minimization procedures in the field of computational contact mechanics. I think it is not a secret that quite often books on mathematics are written from matematicians for matematicians. Hence it is quite hard for engineers both to read and to extract valuable information from them. With this respect this book is a shining star. It presents the topics in a very precise but clear and understandable way. Moreover the notation also is the best compromise between coinciseness and clarity. Matematicians, please, look at this book and follow such style; we engineer desperately need to communicate with you.

5 out of 5 stars A necessary book for all who want to read and learn!.......1999-08-02

I have the 1977 edition from my father's MIT days. I am a Mathematician and I can verify that the book written in 1977 is of the same style that good books have today! A book is not made obsolete because some new "elegant" terms arise. Ok Luenberger did not know about Interior Point Algorithms and to tell you the truth why should he? I do not know other editions but in the first edition in chapter 7 "Basic Descent Methods" everyone who is able to read clearly and unbiased the second paragraph will agree with me that Interion Point Algorithms IS NOTHING NEW in the theory of MATHEMATICS!!! What you need to know ,the magic, is in the chapters 7-11. From there you can read everything else you like and get in touch with what is about to come in the next 25 years(See Ye : "Interion Point Algorithms"). But remember you are already in stars before reading the new books...

4 out of 5 stars Good introduction.......1998-05-04

Nice introduction to linear programming, but new standard definitions have already arrived, making many "good books" obsolete. The book sometimes isn't very clear and should be more explicit and should give more examples.

Book Description

Most newcomers to the field of linear stochastic estimation go through a difficult process in understanding and applying the theory. This book minimizes the process while introducing the fundamentals of optimal estimation. Optimal Estimation of Dynamic Systems explores topics that are important in the field of control where the signals received are used to determine highly sensitive processes such as the flight path of a plane, the orbit of a space vehicle, or the control of a machine. The authors use dynamic models from mechanical and aerospace engineering to provide immediate results of estimation concepts with a minimal reliance on mathematical skills. The book documents the development of the central concepts and methods of optimal estimation theory in a manner accessible to engineering students, applied mathematicians, and practicing engineers. It includes rigorous theoretial derivations and a significant amount of qualitiative discussion and judgements. It also presents prototype algorithms, giving detail and discussion to stimulate development of efficient computer programs and intelligent use of them. This book illustrates the application of optimal estimation methods to problems with varying degrees of analytical and numercial difficulty. It compares various approaches to help develop a feel for the absolute and relative utility of different methods, and provides many applications in the fields of aerospace, mechanical, and electrical engineering.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding inclusive text on estimation theory!.......2004-06-03

It presents the fundamentals of state estimation theory and the tools for the design of state-of-the-art algorithms for navigation and tracking, vehicle attitude determination. There is a lot of material that is covered by this book. The examples are well presented and they really help you when working on the problems at the end of each chapter. Also, computer routines for all the examples shown in the text can be accessed. I have to say that this is an excellent book for estimation of dynamic systems.

      Book Description

Nonlinear Interactions provides a coherent and unified treatment of analytical, computational, and experimental methods and concepts of modal interactions. This book is an obvious extension of Ali Nayfeh's well-known book Applied Nonlinear Dynamics (with Bala Balachandran). These methods are used to explore and unfold in a unified manner the fascinating complexities in nonlinear dynamical systems. The systems discussed are drawn from fluid mechanics and structural dynamics.

Nonlinear interactions between high-frequency and low-frequency modes are of great practical importance. Through the mechanisms discussed in this book, energy from high-frequency sources can be transferred to the low-frequency modes of supporting structures and foundations, and the result can be harmful large-amplitude oscillations that decrease their fatigue lives. On the other hand, these mechanisms can be exploited to transfer the energy from a system to a sacrificial subsystem and hence decrease considerably the vibrations of the main system and increase its fatigue life.

      Book Description

The technology of neural networks has attracted much attention in recent years. Their ability to learn nonlinear relationships is widely appreciated and is utilized in many different types of applications; modelling of dynamic systems, signal processing, and control system design being some of the most common. The theory of neural computing has matured considerably over the last decade and many problems of neural network design, training and evaluation have been resolved. This book provides a comprehensive introduction to the most popular class of neural network, the multilayer perceptron, and shows how it can be used for system identification and control. It aims to provide the reader with a sufficient theoretical background to understand the characteristics of different methods, to be aware of the pit-falls and to make proper decisions in all situations. The subjects treated include: System identification: multilayer perceptrons; how to conduct informative experiments; model structure selection; training methods; model validation; pruning algorithms. Control: direct inverse, internal model, feedforward, optimal and predictive control; feedback linearization and instantaneous-linearization-based controllers. Case studies: prediction of sunspot activity; modelling of a hydraulic actuator; control of a pneumatic servomechanism; water-level control in a conical tank. The book is very application-oriented and gives detailed and pragmatic recommendations that guide the user through the plethora of methods suggested in the literature. Furthermore, it attempts to introduce sound working procedures that can lead to efficient neural network solutions. This will make the book invaluable to the practitioner and as a textbook in courses with a significant hands-on component.

4 out of 5 stars all about the perceptron for control systems.......2007-01-07

Much of the book might already be familiar to a reader involved with neural networks. The authors give a recap of decades of progress into using multilayer networks in a feedback mode. Key sections of the text discuss the weighting of the nodes and how you can realistically compute these weights.

But the emphasis differs from most existing texts on neural networks. Here, the authors explain how you might control a dynamical system that could exhibit pronounced nonlinearities. The book is pitched towards someone from control systems theory. The latter has been highly developed, to handle both linear and nonlinear systems. However, if you consult standard texts on control systems, neural networks rarely (if ever) garner a mention. This book tries to correct that deficiency.

      5 out of 5 stars it works!.......2006-01-18

This is an excellent book. It contains theory and essential exaples for system identification and control based on ANN approach. The authors have also a WEB site where additional information and the toolboxes (MATLAB format) can be found.
The programs work an they are easy to understand and run.
I first tried the toolboxes (the user manuals are included with the toolboxes) and then ordered the book. It is worth having both. I highly recommend it, specially if you are a newbie in ANN but need a fast start.

      Cheers!

          Book Description

Chaos, catastrophe, self-organization, and complexity theories (nonlinear dynamics) now have practical and measurable roles in the functioning of work organizations. Managing Emergent Phenomena begins by describing how the concept of an organization has changed from a bureaucracy, to a humanistic and organic system, to a complex adaptive system. The dynamics concepts are then explained along with the most recent research methods for analyzing real data. Applications include: work motivation, personnel selection and turnover, creative thinking by individuals and groups, the development of social networks, coordination in work groups, the emergence of leaders, work performance in organizational hierarchies, economic problems that are relevant to organizations, techniques for predicting the future, and emergency management.

Each application begins with a tight summary of standard thinking on a subject, followed by the new insights that are afforded by nonlinear dynamics and the empirical data supporting those ideas. Unusual concepts are also encountered, such as the organizational unconscious, collective intelligence, and the revolt of the slaved variables. The net results are a new perspective on what is really important in organizational life, original insights on familiar experiences, and some clear signposts for the next generation of nonlinear social scientists.

          Book Description

Divorce rates are at an all-time high. But without a theoretical understanding of the processes related to marital stability and dissolution, it is difficult to design and evaluate new marriage interventions. The Mathematics of Marriage provides the foundation for a scientific theory of marital relations. The book does not rely on metaphors, but develops and applies a mathematical model using difference equations. The work is the fulfillment of the goal to build a mathematical framework for the general system theory of families first suggested by Ludwig Von Bertalanffy in the 1960s.

The book also presents a complete introduction to the mathematics involved in theory building and testing, and details the development of experiments and models. In one "marriage experiment," for example, the authors explored the effects of lowering or raising a couples heart rates. Armed with their mathematical model, they were able to do real experiments to determine which processes were affected by their interventions.

Applying ideas such as phase space, null clines, influence functions, inertia, and uninfluenced and influenced stable steady states (attractors), the authors show how other researchers can use the methods to weigh their own data with positive and negative weights. While the focus is on modeling marriage, the techniques can be applied to other types of psychological phenomena as well.

Chapter 2 with an overview of marriage research was fascinating. Chapters 3-8 with a discussion of non-linear modeling and catastrophe theory were very clear.

The sections applying the non-linear modeling to marriage interactions were less convincing. Part of the problem is that each non-linear model concerns a single discussion rather than the state of a marriage as a whole. A marriage with two steady states is one thing; a conversation with two steady states is something else.

Gottman's previous work has found that the ratio of positive to negative interactions in a single marriage discussion can strongly predict whether the married couples will divorce. Couples with a good marriages had an average of a 5 to 1 positive/negative ratio while couples that ended up divorcing had an average of a 0.8 to 1 positive/negative ratio. Not surprisingly, the parameters of the functions of the nonlinear models were also different between the divorcing and the happily married couples, but it isn't clear that the additional complexity gets the authors much, if any, analytical benefit.

          5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2006-08-08

I love John Gottman's work and I assign him regularily to my students. His work on partnership processes has always been first-rate and this book is no exception. Don't let the math scare you--it is an interesting read, indeed!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, but for two different purposes.......2006-01-14

This book has an excellent introduction to model building; one of the best I have ever read. Starts with easy math and college stuff you probably forgot much of, then shows how to do great and unexpected things with it. You dont have to know all the math to see how powerful it can be for exploring any relation: man:woman, customer:seller, investor:company. What attracts them, engages them and holds them. When it doesnt work, why not. The other use? People who want to understand better why marriages work or dont. The findings the authors made are here. You dont need to know or even read the math parts to be able to use the findings, which are new and powerful. Certainly worth $28 bucks and a read.

          4 out of 5 stars Hilarious.......2003-05-02

This book offers common sense for marriages, but now it adds math. If both partners have the mathematics background and enjoy complex equations, this book is worth the value in entertainment. Modelling your marriage is just plain goofy, which adds to the novelty of this book.

If you don't enjoy sitting down and going through a math book doing the problems and setting up equations, this is not the book for you.
