Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very useful.... a total package.......2007-06-27

I found myself as the Outlook support for a new small business and I had only used Outlook for e-mail and contacts previously. This book has quickly become my total reference guide. It has helped me solve several problems. It's easy to read, well organized and very complete.
I recommend it to anyone who needs to support an Outlook installation or an Exchange Server installation.

5 out of 5 stars Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 Inside Out.......2007-03-08

Comprehensive and approachable. Good index and highly illustrated.

3 out of 5 stars micro office outlook.......2007-01-10

Too much said about the various steps. Not brief and to the point. Found it difficult to go step by step without reading, and reading, and reading.

3 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, but still some holes.......2005-11-22

Previous reviewer's comments are noted well, but I was somewhat disappointed in the coverage of forms development. I really wanted to learn to move/place fields on a contact form and designate them drop-down, etc. Simple enough, I thought, for a book of this coverage. But even though the author talked about the abilitiy to do this, there were no directions, no examples, and no description of the 'Controls' options required to do it. For a book of this size and price, I had hoped for more meat. No, not to the detail of VB scripting, but certainly more detailed coverage of Outlook's powerful forms and macro abilities. To my chagrin, I'm finding my answers under the Outlook 'Help' section in the program itself!

5 out of 5 stars Most comprehensive.......2005-09-04

A most comprehensive treatment of Outlook. Extremely well suited for an experienced Outlook user, with many details on the use in a server/business environment. Describes the interrelationship with Windows Outlook Express. Probably a little too comprehensive for the single system user just trying to read and write a few email messages. Subject matter is exceptionally well presented and thorough.

5 out of 5 stars Common sense, but extremely useful and worth the $.......2007-10-18

Some reviews have been critical, saying that the material is common sense.

That is the beauty of most things that work. The book is a lot like Dave Ramsey's financial advice. It's common sense, but organized in such a way to make you most effective.

That's what I like about this book. Each portion of his system is extremley intuitive and simple. You put it all together, and it makes you effective if you have the self discipline to do it.

One really good part of the book is that it accurately explains our "stress" as the vague feeling that, despite what you are working on, you should be doing something else, or, that you can't get everything done. He shows you how to organize your workflow so that you can make your daily (hourly) decisions on what to handle confidently - because you are aware of everything that you have to do, and where it ranks in your priorities.

I also like that his system is realistic and flexible, for those days that 3 fires hit you. I also like that it is not software or hardware (certain special calendars) specific. I have always been skeptical of organziational books that seem like they're just trying to hook you on selling you other merchandise. This guy's system can be done with a looseleaf notebook or a PDA. Whatever floats your boat.

5 out of 5 stars I love this book!!.......2007-09-29

I have the book on cassette tapes and I listen to the tapes A LOT! I would recommend reading or listening to this book several times. It has the potential to be life-changing...really!

2 out of 5 stars Mmm... Déjà vu (but his theory is cool).......2007-08-11

This book seems like a repetition of the firs one (Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity) which was very interesting and it helped me a lot. If you want to learn his theory about edit and organize todo list, you better buy that one.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty good.......2007-06-16

This book was not bad. I almost gave it 4 stars, but there are some other great books out there. I have already read Allen's 'Getting Things Done', so some of the material was rehash for me. Overall, I think the book does what it sets out to do, and it does contain some useful tips.

5 out of 5 stars Read This Book.......2007-06-08

I have not read Mr. Allen's "Getting Things Done," but I'd like to read everything he's written now. I've read many time management books...and I've read many philosophy books. This is excellent in both spheres. The approach to time management is so much deeper than "List To-Do's and prioritize A-B-C"; it led me to think very deeply about time and perception, and what we do with our minds moment by moment. I love his concept of "psychic RAM" - and the idea that the more clogged it is, the less effective we are. This actually echoes Julia Cameron's practice of the "Morning Pages" in "The Artist's Way," and Brenda Euland's idea that writing everything down, EVERYTHING, produces a clear, flowing stream of thought. When Mr. Allen talks about writing everything down, he is talking about much more than a to-do list. This is not the same old time management guru stuff.

His style, too, is appealing. None of that bright, chirpy tone of many self-help books, and none of the "weightiness" of Steven Covey. You hear a real person talking.

Finally, there are the sidebar quotes, which are extremely wide-ranging and well-chosen.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-03-30

Anyone who develops on Outlook should buy this book -- even if you don't have Outlook 2007. The beginning chapters review best practices and underlying architecture that every Outlook developer should understand, regardless of which version of Outlook you're using. Plus, you'll see all the great new stuff in 2007 which you'll want, so you can convince your stakeholders to upgrade. Later chapters drill into the technical details with surprising depth so you can find out what you need with only minimal trips to MSDN. Code samples are generous, albeit limited to only managed code... but that's understandable given the obvious advantages to using it for rapid application development.

The difference between this book and previous attempts to document the Outlook development experience is like night and day. Kudos to Randy and Ryan for understanding what we face and doing an admirable job at enlightening us.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Sixty Second Motivator.......2007-09-19

This is a great little book. It is written in a light style that makes it easy to read and digest the principles that Jim spells out. If you have ever tried to make a change and been unsuccessful in accomplishing your goal this little book will help you to understand why you failed and how you can increase your chance of success. I found it to be helpful both with my own personal goals and in better understanding what may help to motivate my clients to achieve their stated goals.

5 out of 5 stars It Really Works!.......2007-08-08

Forget the motivational seminars, DVDs, and CDs. This little book has more insights into motivation than anything else I have seen! No hype here.

The author has taken complex concepts and made them easy to understand in an entertaining way. I use the practical tips not only to motivate my patients, but also to motivate myself!

5 out of 5 stars The Sixty-Second Motivator- Book Review.......2007-06-12

Both my husband and I enjoyed this book a lot. We found it to be a neat, well organized little book written in an easy-to-understand, straight-forward style that is genuinely enjoyable while at the same time providing valuable insights about why we do or do not do things. While we found it quite analytical about key factors concerning motivation, the book didn't make us feel intimidated or "preached at". The tone of the book came across to us as friendly, low-key, very helpful, analytical and a valuable "keeper" to refer to in life's future situations.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent read!!.......2007-03-08

This is an excellent read and one book you will finish reading. They say that most poeople don't finish books they buy, but this one is soo relevant to our lives that you will want to read it cover to cover several times! Keeping it in my day planner for a random quick read infusion throughout the day helps keep me on track!!

5 out of 5 stars The missing link!.......2006-09-19

Having read Jim Johnson's No Beach No Zone weight loss book, I knew WHAT to do, plain and simple, and WHY it was important. So why wasn't I doing what the book laid out as a proven plan for weight loss? It's all about motivation. There's even a chapter on motivation in his weight loss book - but this book takes it one step further, into the science of motivation. Personally I think both books dovetail into one another well, especially if your lack of motivation happens to be in the field of losing weight. The science of how to lose weight permanently, and the science of motivating yourself to do anything. Once again, this is all based on research and not what one guy thinks.

One of the best surprises about this book is the way it is written. Without giving away too much, I can tell you that this book is more of a story than a collection of facts, and reads almost like a mystery. One thing's for sure, it's extremely engaging. I read the whole think in one sitting; the research and strategy don't take volumes to explain or lay out. I'm not one to read huge volumes, and Jim Johnson always makes a concise read devoid of medical mumbo-jumbo. The actual motivation chart takes up one page and really makes you think about what makes your own self "tick". The only excuse for not getting motivated is if you aren't willing to give up one hour of your time, and a little more time spent thinking straight.

2 out of 5 stars Almost teaches you what you need to know........2006-02-15

I bought this book mostly to learn how to customize Contact forms. This book gives you about half the info you need. Then you hit a brick wall. I spent hours searching newsgroups and web sites to fill in the other half. There are a few simple things the author could have added so the book was actually valuable instead of incredibly frustrating. For example, the book shows you how to customize a form. Great. But then the book neglects to tell you how to apply that form to existing Contacts.

I am most impressed with Amozon's sevice, the book arrived on time as forcast. I am still working my way through the book and I am finding it both informstive and helpful. I would frecommend it.

    4 out of 5 stars task-oriented, well-written.......2005-10-30

If you are looking for a task-oriented, well-written book that covers every aspect of Microsoft's Outlook 2003, this is the book for you. The author is clearly comfortable with technical material but is able to communicate this material to a non-technical reader. The book is very thorough and provides notes, cautions, tips, and shortcuts throughout. Lots of useful information such as dealing with junk e-mail and spam. I recommend this book highly.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth buying.......2005-10-12

This book doesn't offer much that you can't find in Outlook's Help system, it's poorly organized, and it isn't written well. You can almost hear the sleepy author's fingers clattering on the keyboard as he hurries to meet his deadline and get this book finished. Whether readers can understand a word didn't rank high on the author's priority list. Nothing is explained well. Nowhere does he give you any advice about how to make Outlook easier to use.

Don't bother with this hastily written book. It's hard to read and it isn't worth the asking price.

4 out of 5 stars I took my life back!.......2007-10-22

I was a disorganized mess. My desk was piles and piles of clutter and things (important, time sensitive materials) got lost! It took me about a good year to get where I am now. I started with Michael Linenberger's Total Workday Control. Not a good place to start so I tried David Allen's book 'Getting Things Done'. It was a great start and gave me foundation. I then moved on to Sally McGhee's book Take Back Your Life! for Outlook 2003. Awesome! That helped me integrate everything into my real world computer life. Then I went back and reread Michael Linenberger's Total Workday Control, which now made a lot more sense and I used some of his ideas to create a 'custom' system for myself.
Finally, I bought this updated book of Sally McGhee's because I am using Outlook 2007 now. The material is basically the same, but tuned for Outlook 2007.

Now some people claim this book is a rip off of David Allen's book or that these books are all the same or they are boring. YES! and NO!

What you have to realize is that there are several ways of getting things done. All roads lead to Rome. I prefer the Sally McGhee method because it does not depend upon a plugin or extra software. It works with Outlook the way it is when you buy it and her methods translate over to my desk at home and work and since I am on the road...in my car. YES, the material is dry at times but so is work! lol

David Allen offers custom software as an add in for Outlook 2003 and 2007 that is Windows XP and Vista compatible and his extra software will cost you an EXTRA $70 folks! This could be very nice and efficient for some people. yet, there is a downside...the plug in only works with Outlook. If you use another email client, you have nothing. Another downside, you are now dependent upon that software instead of doing it yourself. If he stops making that software or it causes troubles and you have to remove it, you are now back to square 1 with no method of organizing. In other words, David Allen caught the fish for you, but McGhee wants to teach you to catch the fish yourself.

So, that is why I like McGhee's method. Yes, she basis it on Outlook but since there is no extra custom software involved to integrate into Outlook, you can translate the system to other mail clients. I also run Linux and I can use her methods in Evolution, Thunderbird, Kontact, etc. Also, it is NOT a 'blatant copy' of David Allen. They worked together and she openly discusses, reveals and discloses that info. She even quotes Mr. Allen in her book.

If you have Take Back Your Life! for Outlook 2003 and have been using it and are skilled in her methodology, you can make the transition to Outlook 2007 on your own probably. If you are new to this, and have Outlook 2007, this is a definite buy. Here on Amazon, it is only $17! What a deal! I bought a current copy for myself and to help others in my family.

She will probably come out with a SPECIAL EDITION like she did with her previous book that will include a CD, some pull out charts, etc. I would say, do not wait. Buy this book and get organized. I would also recommend the other books I have listed in my review too. I don't think just 1 book is enough! And this will take effort on your part. It took me a solid year to get really good. I fell off the wagon, got frustrated, reread the book, tweaked, learned, quit, failed, tried again, screwed up but eventually succeeded. I doubt many of you will get it going well in your first month...so don't quit! Keep trying and it will happen!

5 out of 5 stars Finally an approach that ties it all together!.......2007-10-02

I've read them all: Getting Things Done, Seven Habits, Total Workday Control... What sets this book apart is the combination of modern theory and practical application. Finally there's an approach that shows both what AND how. I'm on Outlook 2007, and this is the best book I've found for tieing personal and professional goals, objectives, projects and loose ends all together into one elegant and powerful system. I'm more in control and more productive than ever - and finding more time to spend with my family everyday, too!

5 out of 5 stars Show me how to fish instead of talking about fishing.......2007-10-02

As you may know, Sally McGhee and David Allen developed the productivity concepts together, and she decided to adapt it to Microsoft's Outlook. I'm very familiar with both David Allen's and Sally McGhee's work (having seen them both in person) and the main difference and value that I see in "Take Back Your Life!" is that instead of TALKING about what is productive, TBYL actually SHOWS YOU HOW TO USE OUTLOOK--it's akin to the difference between someone TALKING about the different ways you can go fishing (Deep-sea, fly-, bottom-, spear-) and someone ACTUALLY SHOWING YOU HOW TO USE YOUR Fishing Pole (Outlook in this case).

1 out of 5 stars A waste of time and money.......2007-09-21

After reading Total Workday Control Using Microsoft Outlook: The Eight Best Practices of Task and E-Mail Management and then reading this (I bought both together as a Amazon "Better Together" package) I have come to conclude that this book "Take Back Your Life Using MS Office Outlook 2007" is a waste of time and money.

It is one of the few books I have purchased (out of the 20-30 per year), read (actually skimmed, it was so blah in less than 45 minutes) and then chucked it straight into the trash.

Do not waste your time or money.

Buy Linenberger's book instead. I spent much more time with his book and fully implemented his super-elegant system and now have a empty inbox and all my tasks & projects in Outlook in a fantastic, actionable way.

I only bought this book because I thought it would add value to his system, which came highly recommended. I was wrong.

1 out of 5 stars Blatent Copy of David Allen .......2007-09-16

Pages and pages of blah, blah, blah. So ironic that this book is about productivity!?!?!

And all the core advise is a copy of the succinct advise available in David Allen's "Getting Things Done" (which is a good book).

I bought "Take Back Your Life" to help implement "Getting THings Done" into MS-Outlook. Waste of productivity. I now download David Allen's add-in to MS-Outlook (available at [...]) and it does everything required, fast and easy.
