Sound advice for managerial success anywhere, but especially in the hospitality industry.......2006-12-15
Leadership is one of those things that everyone recognizes when they see it but is difficult to define. Part of the problem is that it has so many forms. There is leadership on the battlefield, in the boardroom, in the factory, at academic institutions, in sports teams, in other words there is a leader in just about every activity involving more than one person. It is also a hard activity to carry out, because in nearly all cases the authority that the leader exercises is not based on any authoritarian right. Successful leadership is a partnership between the leader and the led, which means that the leader derives a great deal of their authority from the consent of the governed.
In this book, Rehkopf discusses the strategies good leaders employ from the perspective of the hospitality industry. He has managed hotels and resorts and opened golf and country clubs. His knowledge of the subject matter is thorough, yet his main themes are simple. If you are a manager, interact with your people, take an interest in their welfare and listen to their concerns. Leadership by controlling force is a managerial dead end, it works for a short time, as eventually people will leave. The first to leave will of course be your good people, as they are the ones with the most pride in their work and can more easily find another job.
The advice offered up in this book is sound, the American business world would be much more efficient if more managers were to follow it. Unfortunately, that is not the case. For a variety of reasons, so many managers choose to insulate themselves from their workers. While some professional distance is necessary in the work place, there are times when the human element must take precedence. By applying the basic courtesies of human interaction, good managers can motivate to an extent that no threat can ever achieve.
This book contains a simple blueprint for successfully managing a business in the hospitality industry. As such, all that aspire to or are currently managing in the business would be aided by reading and applying the advice.
When "SERVICE" is important to your operations.......2004-06-08
Here's the book I wish someone had shared with me years ago.
This is a practical, back to the basics, presentation of every day service opportunities. Ed shared a copy of this book with me and I in turn shared it with one of our General Managers. She was so excited about its content that she requested I send more copies for her managers. We now utilize the book in management training programs, and all of our Department Managers receive a copy.
This book develops a level of understanding among our teams' managers that service is important to everyone, and when customers receive great service consistently, great results will occur.
Thanks Ed for sharing your valuable experiences with us!
What All Service Industry Leaders Should Know.......2004-06-02
For an industry that often lacks leadership guidance and supervisory training, this book delivers the key ingredients needed on the journey to becoming a sound leader. Well-written and easy to read, this book is beneficial for both experienced and new leaders. Rehkopf uses composite examples from his own diverse career in the hospitality industry as the basis for the book. A must read for every management trainee and aspiring leader.
Direct and to the Point.......2004-05-26
Rehkopf hits a home run with this book. It is logically written, easily read, and full of pertinent examples. Although directed to the hospitality industry, the lessons are applicable to anyone in a leadership role. I've used it in my business and bought copies for all my mid-management people. This book is for owners, managers and all people who aspire to be an owner or manager one day.
A Practical Guide to Leadership............2004-05-26
A well written and concise book which presents a practical guide on leadership. This book was easy to read and offers many good examples of how to be an effective service based leader. An excellent training tool for all levels of management.

Book Description
The nail that sticks out gets hammered down. This Japanese expression characterizes the attitude of many Asian Americans. We are often taught not to put ourselves forward--not to stick out. But the Western concept of leadership is all about stepping up and standing apart from the group. Is that appropriate for Asian Americans? Or can we lead out of our own cultural strengths rather than being pressed into the Western mold? Paul Tokunaga has been a leader in Asian American, white and multiethnic contexts for many years. He has been active in ministry and in his community. In Invitation to Lead he offers, with surprising transparency, lessons from his own rich experiences--both successes and failures. Many of us aren't sure whether we can or should lead. We are waiting for someone to ask. Or we are just beginning to take on new roles and responsibilities at church, at work or in our neighborhoods. Here, at last, is our invitation to lead.

Great.......2007-07-12
Great book on Asian American leadership. I think that some parts of the book rely a bit too much on the author's personal views (which tend to be based on stereotypes). However, the arguments are persuasive.
Finally, someone who addresses Asian American leaders.......2004-02-21
I'm about halfway through this book, but just reading the first few chapters, I could have sworn I was reading an auto-biography of myself. His experiences are just so close to what I've experienced and hit hard to where I am coming from.
Every ethnicity has it's own issues and concerns that need addressing. Paul Tok really tackles this topic with a gusto and humility that make him very approachable. Even though he is Japanese American, his experiences mimic what most Asian Americans experience. From deferring to our parents to the ridiculous heights we hold education and prestige. He gives us perspective of how he deals with these issues along with dealing with other races.
While this book is geared towards Asian Americans, I HIGHLY recommend leaders of other ethnicities to read this book. It truly shines a light on some of the issues facing Asian Americans and can give insight in how to relate to us.
I had the pleasure of meeting Paul at Urbana 2003 during a workshop he gave on this very topic. Although I hadn't read his book at the time, (and I wish I did), he came across as someone who really wants to help and empathizes with the future leaders of this generation.
Recommended Rading for Asian American Ministry.......2003-12-02
If you are a non Asian in an Asian church, this book will help you understand more. As an Asian American, Tokunaga's book has helped me understand the impact of my culture on why I act the way I do. Good practical advice as well. I can't believe some of the mistakes Tokunaga admitted to but I guess his point is that God can use any of us. On page 199, he says that our young people are leaving the church because the church is irrelevant, stifling and ill-equipped. I think that may be only true on the surface and perhaps the real reason is that our youth are prodigals, looking for boy/girl friends and freedom. The Bible study questions from Moses and Esther are very useful.
Great insight from Paul Tok on Asian American leadership..........2003-07-22
This book is a MUST read for all Asian Americans. Paul Tok's insight into Asian American culture and leadership styles is a great resource to anyone from pastors to lay church workers to people in a work setting. Highly recommended!
Very honest and personal... GREAT!!!.......2003-04-23
I haven't finished the book yet, but even half way through it, it really is a great book. The author shares his life very honestly and openly and shares great insight from his years of leading. I think there is a lot of struggle in being an Asian American leader and this book helps to verbalize and bring to light those struggles. Thanks Paul!

Book Description
How senior leaders can re-connect to the emerging leaders hidden in their organizations
A sea change has taken place throughout the culture of leadership; today’s emerging leaders are "opting out" of the same positions their predecessors coveted in years past. But many senior managers trained in traditional leadership still hang onto outdated approaches of command and control despite how much they’ve heard about "empowerment" and inclusion. At the core of this book is the fictional suspense story of Brookreme Corporation, whose leaders are challenged to chart a course to a global future, navigating relational land mines along the way. With both story telling and hard research, Leadership Divided reconnects generations and instructs both senior and emerging leaders on how the relationships of the future will be the path to revolutionary performance.
Ron A. Carucci (Seattle, WA) is a founding partner with Passages Consulting, LLC, where he works with CEOs and senior executives in pursuit of profound organizational change and executive leadership capability. He is Graduate Professor of Leadership at Mars Hill Graduate School in Seattle. He is also faculty member at Fordham University, serving as Associate Professor of Organizational Behavior, and has served as an adjunct at the Center for Creative Leadership. His clients have included Edward Jones Investments, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Amgen, McDonald’s, PepsiCo, Gates Corporation, Accenture, and many others.

The Time is Now!.......2007-07-21
Ever have the gut need to just be inspired? To read material, especially on an over-serviced subject like leadership, and want to exclaim with conviction, "YES!" Leadership Divided is the book that will take you there. As an emerging leader in a major government organization, I spend many days wondering about my future and the leadership career that will unfold for me. I hear over and over that there is a "shortfall" of leaders for the future, and as such, my development is essential for the sustainability of my organization. Yet my experience doesn't match that belief. What I have found is that there is definitely a crisis, but its not one of shortfall. (Diane at Harvard Business review who wrote the review above clearly never cracked open her copy of the book - had she, she would have known the quote she references was from the TV show "The Office." She completely missed the point! That's the kind of integrity shortage that makes us emerging leaders so cynical about leadership!). The crisis is one of relationship. Page after page, I was able to locate myself in the words and stories of Leadership Divided. I am being "developed" as a fast-tracked leader, and find myself fighting not to roll my eyes at some of the empty platitudes being put forth as leadership. In the wake of such leadership trash, I have finally come across a book that rises above the noise and says something of great substance. Don't miss this one!
Finally a book on Leadership that can make a difference!.......2007-07-21
Working for a large monopolistic organization, you tend to experience the worst management has to offer. I found this ground-breaking book revelatory in explaining why traditional approaches to leadership have failed. More importantly, Carucci powerfully and poignantly offers an alternative that can work. Too often, those of us in the management ranks of organizations, daily grinding out ways to "make it work," are invited to cynicism through the callous and insensitive behaviors of leaders who believe in the rightness of their actions. I would strongly urge anyone tasked with the development of leaders in their organizations to make Leadership Divided the centerpiece of their theory and practice.
Through the exploration of six relational patterns, Carucci blends the practical and profound in both hard-hitting research and a gripping novelette. The story is compelling as it captivates you with believable scenarios and characters you come to love and resent. Leadership Divided is truly a "must-read" for anyone claiming to be serious about their own leadership development.
A useful perspective on leadership.......2006-12-11
Everyone knows relationships matter. But the formulaic recipe books typically offered have never worked, and the movement toward more collaborative, intimate relationships in the work place continues to grow. Organizations and leaders will no longer succeed, and perhaps they never did, by trying to follow neat and tidy plug-and-play leadership models. Leadership is about relationships, and let's face it they are always messy, time intensive, and complex. It's precisely why they are the most profound vehicle for change that exists. And Leadership Divided offers an honest, inspiring and provocative look at the kinds of relationships necessary for leaders to succeed on the global stage.
As an executive search professional I'm not the target audience for this book. However, given that I spend my entire day on the phone trying to attract top professionals to new opportunities, I know leadership issues top the list of reasons most people will be open to my phone call and to considering a change. When career discussions inevitably turn to the topic of "what's leading to you explore new horizons?" the answer given most often is a lack of appreciation for loyalty, contributions, and a shortage of mentoring received from supervisors." Leadership Divided paints an accurate picture of the generational and cultural differences that contribute to stalled communication and the relational investment required from both sides to turn things around. I found the story of Brookreme interesting, and the situations believable. I was eager to get back to the book and see how things would turn out. Rather than the usual collection of canned solutions, this book offers deep insight on what open productive dialog looks like. It was obvious to me this is the result of field tested experience instead of trying to attach facts to existing theory. As far as the HBR review's comment about the book siding with the emerging leaders, someone once said "people don't leave companies and jobs they leave other people." You can't change the culture of the times you lead in, so while both sides need to step up, if you're an incumbent leader you shoulder the bulk of the responsibility to make it happen, that's why it's called leadership. This book can help
The Only Way Forward.......2006-10-12
A brief confession: there was a time when I was hopelessly addicted to leadership books. I knew that I wanted to be an agent of great change and subsequently I knew that becoming a great leader was the necessary foundation for catalyzing great change. So, like many of you, I began to devour everything I could get my hands on in regards to becoming a transformational leader. While there are nuggets of wisdom in most texts, I soon became disillusioned with how neat and tidy principles became soiled and muddy in the real world.
I wanted more. And frankly, I didn't think I would find it from anyone over 35.
Perhaps this desire for more is a dominant characteristic of my "emerging" generation. In reading "Leadership Divided" I was overjoyed to find a book which had the courage to dive into the immense complexities of leadership, especially the complexities that are created through a generational divide that I feel so keenly.
I have been waiting for this book for a long time.
As an emerging leader this book has spurned me to extend my hand into the divide in hopes of incredible change. It is a relationship I now I believe I cannot live without, it really is the only way forward. My increasing desire is that incumbent leaders are able to extend their hands in the same way that Ron Carucci has extended his.
A way forward through the generational maze.......2006-10-09
I am what Carucci calls an `emerging leader.' Amongst other things this means is that when a new leadership book comes out I gobble it up in hopes of a finding a way forward that I can subscribe to. After many letdowns, this book turned the corner for me. As I read I found myself continually saying, "Finally, someone finally gets it." Someone finally gets that I, as an emerging leader, am dying to lead, I just won't lead, or want to be led, the same way that incumbent leaders are leading.
Therefore, this book is not your typical leadership book that sets forth principles, or values, or quick-fixes. Instead, this book calls for and seeks conversation between parties, and most importantly, it doesn't place the blame of the `division' on anyone. Therefore, at the foundation of Carucci's thought is a true change of character of both the `incumbent' and `emergent' leader if we are to move forward with any level of sustainable health. This is a beautiful mandate to companies (and individuals), big and small, worldwide.
If you are in any leadership role and you find yourself struggling with a colleague that is a generation (or two) older or a generation (or two) younger than you then please read this book. You will be doing yourself, your company, and those you lead a favor.

Good, Quick, Artistic, Thought Provoking..........2006-03-05
The Emergent Movement is an addiction to some, and the undermining of Christianity to others. In this artistic collection of various artists, pastors, authors - they give dialogue to the various aspects of living their understanding of the movment.
What I enjoyed most about this book, is the wrestling with the question - what does it mean, what does it look like, how can WE be the Body of Christ in this world?
To me, that is a great question that is often trumped by - How much money do we need? How can we grow bigger, faster? How can we maximize the one hour we get with our people?
For those who are "all in" - this will provide some priceless ideas and conversations that will help shape and challenge whatever is going through your mind regarding "being the Church."
For those of you who are skeptical - read it, because, it seems their arguments are moving away from the anti-modern church and instead asking the question - how can the Church return to being Missional verses a weekly gathering.
My only complaint is - for those who are NOT at all artistic, there are parts of this book that may appear "hokey." In our world - that is still more modern than post-modern (at least in Toledo, OH) there are many who just want to read and learn - drawing and journaling in a book is a distracting. I enjoy the drawings - but the whole thing felt too fabricated and the questions were not the ones I wanted to wrestle with...
Overall, great and interesting read. Not too over the top with "BE LIKE US" or "HATE MODERN" - but a genuine interest in wrestling with what it means to be missional!
Practical - and bring a Pencil.......2005-11-18
Greg Russinger and Alex Field let us in on a conversation, a dialogue in mostly prose form. My only interaction with some of the voices within - Doug Pagitt, Spencer Burke, Dan Kimball, Anna Pelkey and others - has been a couple of face-to-face meetings and through their online presence. The proverbial fly-on-the-wall would have had a great seat in the midst of the questions and answers and then better questions that were flowing from the Soliton gatherings upon which this work was based. I proverbially envy that fly.
I admit that I was this close (picture my fingers making the little "this close" sign) to putting this book down when I got to the first page asking me to draw my thoughts. I didn't want to find a pen, didn't want to doodle while reading in my comfortable wingback by the fireplace, so I closed the book. Later, heading to bed, I took the book upstairs to keep reading on the post-doodle-your-thoughts page. On my nightstand was a crayon, and I made a leap of faith into a book that asks the reader to draw, to think, to pray, to stretch into new contortions of the way faith can work out in community with each other. I doodled, and entered into the conversation. Or rather, it left me wanting to be that proverbial fly again, wanting to join in those former chats or start some new ones here and now.
In reading Luke 7 and the story of the girl washing Jesus' feet with her hair as the leaders gawk and wonder what's going on, my mind was opened to the way I "see people" - "Do you see this woman?" is such a deep question: "In Jesus, we see the raw recognition of her human value come to the forefront and the rebellion of love challenge the systems of moral judgment that haunt the human heart, as well as confront church policy that unknowingly ousts the broken for fear that those with wealth would exit the doors" (p. 40). There are too many folks pointing the finger of judgment, saying that new movements and emerging ideas are lacking in biblical foundations. This book has made me once again look at favorite passages with new eyes, showing a certain depth that's going unnoticed, a certain love for the scriptural narrative that is wonderful on all kinds of levels. Instead of a lack of Bible, there's a love for the Bible that will not let us take it for granted.
Dialogue on missional prayer, pondering story and the visual aspects of learning and communicating, a wonderful chapter on movies and the impact of culture on the human story - and that's just halfway through the book. Covering topics much like a conversation would, chasing bunnies and coming back to a common thread, the book winds its way through to Dan Kimball's experience with stained glass, which speaks to my own journey, too: "I sat there in the chapel for a long time. As I did, I watched the sun come through the window, I saw the stories on the stained glass, and I examined my heart, putting it all into perspective... God chooses us as art, and in this sense we are all broken pieces of stained glass, and He has chosen us for this particular time" (p. 207). I think it resonates with me because I want my life to be more beautiful, a better story, more impacting on the lives of others around me. As a "practitioner", we can have this conversation, at least changing and challenging ourselves.
A fine addition to the Emergent conversation.......2005-10-30
This book stretched me. The chapter on justice will leave you changed. Doug Pagitt's chapters are my favorite, he challenges the ideas you arrive with and leaves your bags packed with more interesting questions to wrestle with than you thought possible. The cover design, interior and artwork through out the book are nice as well. I hope this book is well marketed. It's a gem that shouldn't be missed.

Book Description
FROM GRANTMAKER TO LEADER
The past one hundred years has borne witness to an extraordinary revolution in the constitution and activities of philanthropic foundations. The evolution of the governance of foundations-from founder to family to professionals to institutions-has necessarily altered the role that foundations play within a society. As community foundations, for example, strengthen the essential communal fabric and help all organizations gain a financial foothold, they find themselves at times in conflict with commercial gift funds, whose transactional nature between the donor and the organization stimulates philanthropy in a wholly different fashion. From Grantmaker to Leader: Emerging Strategies for 21st Century Foundations takes stock of this shifting landscape, presenting bold leadership strategies for directing philanthropic organizations into the unchartered waters of the future.
Seasoned foundation executives Frank Ellsworth and Joseph Lumarda assemble an all-star roster of insider contributors, dividing their trenchant study into three sections. "From Carnegie to Gates: The Changing Faces and Needs of Philanthropy" examines the history of family and community foundations and how the turmoil of the "New Economy" will affect these organizations in the future. Section Two, "The Foundation's New Reach: The Emerging Role of Leader, Communicator, and Facilitator of Change" addresses the critical responsibility of effectively articulating a foundation's message, showing how messages can successfully penetrate the media. Finally, the third section "Building the Foundation Board of the 21st Century: Diversity and Strategic Planning" analyzes all aspects of foundation boards of directors, including their makeup, responsibilities, backgrounds, necessary diversity, and the role of boards in foundation planning. Throughout all three sections, From Grantmaker to Leader tackles all the critical issues facing philanthropic foundations today, such as:
- Transfer of wealth
- Legislative concerns
- IRS audits
- The role of foundations in public policy issues, such as campaign spending
- Accountability
- Planned giving
- Assessment of the effectiveness of giving
- Socially responsible investment and social return on investment
Even as the very nature of foundations has changed, a fundamental question remains: will philanthropies play a more pervasive role in society's future or will their influence forever remain elitist and selective? Writing directly for trustees, practitioners, foundation CEOs and CFOs, and every philanthropic professional, Ellsworth and Lumarda make the convincing case that foundations matter more than ever, offering proven strategies for philanthropic success.
FRANK L. ELLSWORTH is a vice president at Capital Research and Management Company, where he oversees and coordinates programs and services to endowments in Los Angeles.
JOSEPH LUMARDA is the Executive Vice President of External Affairs for the California Community Foundation in Los Angeles.

ASIN: 080919578X |
Book Description
I Have Chosen You is a revision of Paulist Press's longtime bestselling Confirmation preparation program, CHOICE. It helps young people spiritually prepare--through the use of shared experiences, story telling, celebration, action, and reflection--to be fully initiated into the Catholic faith, and to belong more fully to Christ and his Church.
The program/process contains twenty-four sessions divided under three headings--Precatechumenate, Catechumenate, and Period of Purification and Enlightenment--and covers such diverse topics as the basics of a Christian lifestyle, a review of fundamental Roman Catholic doctrine, and a deeper look at faith as a young Catholic emerging into adulthood.
The program fits well into one academic year if meetings are weekly, or two academic years if meetings are monthly. Included are discussion questions, prayers, and instructions for retreats.
