Book Description

A seminal work in fleshing out the kind of leadership we need to renew and prepare communities for the demands of democracy in the coming era.

Ronald Heifetz, director, Leadership Education Project, John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University

Jolted by the economic downturn of the early 1990s and the rapid globalization of the economy, a group of California business, government, education, and community leaders formed Joint Venture: Silicon Valley, a collaborative regional alliance that helped create a strengthened economy and an improved quality of life in their community. Now three of Joint Venture's advisers outline the process that led to this dramatic turnaround, as well as success stories in Florida, Ohio, Kansas, and Texas. They reveal the powerful new concept of civic entrepreneurship, and they offer practical, proven strategies that community leaders across the country can employ to foster local economic development and renewal.

Grassroots Leaders for a New Economy explains the unique leadership qualities that set civic entrepreneurs apart, and illustrates how these leaders can emerge from all levels of private, public, social, and civic organizations. The book shows how civic entrepreneurs forge powerfully productive linkages at the intersection of business, government, education, and community, and it demonstrates how they operate at the grassroots level to create collaborative advantages that make it possible for their economic communities to compete on the global stage.

Citing numerous real-life examples, authors Douglas Henton, John Melville, and Kimberly Walesh illustrate the necessary steps to build an economic community. They show how civic entrepreneurs motivate and network to organize for action, set priorities, and mobilize resources to get things done. Finally, they demonstrate how to sustain cross-sector collaboration over the long haul for the good of the community. An indispensable resource, Grassroots Leaders for a New Economy offers step-by-step guidance and practical advice equally useful to business executives, elected officials and public managers, community development practitioners, or concerned citizens who want to take an active role in shaping the future of local economic development.

4 out of 5 stars Prescription For Community Change In The Early 21st Century.......2002-05-13

Beginning several decades ago with Alvin Toffler and carried on by Peter Drucker, Thomas Friedman and a host of other writers, a number of examinations of change in our world and how we can/should/may cope with all of it have made their way to bookstore shelves.

This current epistle by three writers who've had some hands on experience in working with communities who want to adapt to the switch in the United States from that of a manufacturing based society to a technology based one offer some insights garnered over the past decade or so by communities that are changing the focus of their notion of what the change means to their communities.

Using diverse regional examples such as San Jose, California and Silicon Valley, Austin, Texas, Cleveland, Ohio and Phoenix, Arizona, the notion of the civic entreprenuer as the force for change is nicely developed. The writers demonstrate how leaders from government, business, as well as the education sectors can come together to become a powerful source of community improvement. A specific example of this used in the book is Enterprise Florida; an organization clearly focused on garnering a fair share of the economic opportunities available to communities in the Sunshine State.

For those who understand the forces being brought to bear on communities, and for those who want to practice the mantra of thinking globaly while acting locally, this work can be especially meaningful, and well worth the time it takes to read.

1 out of 5 stars Going Global instead of Going Local.......2002-01-04

Having looked at the sample pages, I am led to be very skeptical about the thesis. Anyone reading this book should also read Michael Shuman's "Going Local." Some of the examples Henton et al. use appear as counerexamples in "Going Local."

Henton et al. are right in one sense, it is possible to create a more prosperous community by going global, but it may not be the most desirable prosoperity:

1. There is likely to be more inequality, as the split between lucky winners and unfortunate losers increases.
2. The prosperity is likely to be cyclical and unstable because it will be dependent on the world economy and the whims of external investors.

The correct solution (Shuman's solution) is to focus on providing the basics to as many local community members as possible.

5 out of 5 stars New hope for South Africa found in Amazon!.......1997-07-12

As we grapple to build a new society in South Africa, Grassroots Leaders for a new Economy shone like a beacon to show there is a way. A way to build trust and collaborative relationships in an emerging economy.

Although based primarily on examples of US communities, many of the problems faced by cities and regions around the world have remarkable simialarities. There is much we can all learn from each other and this book is remarable in sharing the insights gained by 1000's of community leaders.

Practical and down to earth, Doug Henton and his co-authors give a step by step guide to building the necessary trust and dynamic working relationships in a diverse community.

This is essential reading for anyone involved in community development.

This would be an excellent book for those majoring in the business field to add to their academic studies. It is also a gifted preparation for what lies ahead in service for any line of work.
I wish this had been available decades ago.

4 out of 5 stars A public good.......2002-10-25

The federal government is a unique place to work. Most people agree that it is more difficult to fire subordinates there than in the private sector and, due to the government's arcane hiring process, it is often a challenge to put the right person in the right job. Add to this mix Congressional oversight, the occasional media spotlight, the lack of a bottom line, and the big-picture question (not asked often enough) "what are we doing and why are we doing it," and you have an environment foreign to many private sector employees.

Enter Richard Haass's book the Bureaucratic Entrepreneur, an update of his 1993 primer the Power to Persuade. Haass has held a number of positions in previous government administrations, including at the NSC and the Defense and State Departments. His book is packed with words of wisdom for the harried bureaucrat who at the end of the day may wonder just what he accomplished. Although Haass's advice appears machiavellian (he argues that Machiavelli is often misunderstood) and the author does not have a firm grasp on whether his audience is the entry-level employee or the senior-level political appointee, it is worth putting up with these drawbacks for the original focus and insight on managing and leading in the public sector. The bibliography alone is reason enough to buy the book.

Low-level or high, every public-sector employee should read the Bureaucratic Entrepreneur before starting his or her new government job. They should then re-read it every few years to ensure that they are on track and using the tools Haass lays out to be effective in one of the most "unruly" organizations around.

Book Description

How to Make Yourself Indispensable, Slightly Immortal, and Lifelong Rich in 18 Months!

On the surface it looks simple: writers write something, speakers speak something, they fit it into a niche market, everybody's happy, and the doer gets rich! Alas, niche marketing is a process, not a panacea: it's a thought pattern carried to completion. A path that can lead to financial, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual fulfillment all at the same time.

Gordon Burgett's purpose in his book is to put you on that path in one easy step ready so you can become the creator of your own wealth and ruler of your own reign, wanted and sought while you help build a better world!

Some of the concept comes form two of his earlier books, Empire-Building By Writing And Speaking and Publishing To Niche Markets, where "core development," "topic-spoking," and TCE are first seen.

Unique to these pages is the definition and development of niche marketing itself and how it can be used to realize your life goals, as well as the detailed explanation of the 11 means that constitute the heart of this form of niche marketing.

Will the application of these words make you lifelong rich in 18 months? It could. But it will more likely get you centered, organized, and profitably in motion so that what is created in 18 months will be the base of a foundation of years, then decades, of healthy, happy earning and living.

I have Gordon Burgett's other Niche Marketing book and found both books very helpful. He packs lots of advice in his books and speaks from personal experience. I also have one of his audio tape series. I have enjoyed all of his products very much.

I highly recommend this book, as well as his other one on niche marketing.

5 out of 5 stars Some typos-but excellent information.......2001-02-07

O.K. I've attended several seminars of Burgett's, so you could consider me a fan. I own several of his books--most of them baught from the back of the room--and this is my favorite one. His writing style, like his speaking style is to the point and personable. This book is a little rough around the edges--some typos, less flowing writing style--but the information (and I hope that is why you are considering this book) is sound, useful and inspiring. He followed this plan and it has worked very well for him.

5 out of 5 stars Smart Start Ups- Pure Gold by a man called Silver!.......2007-09-08

If you buy one business book this year make sure it's Smart Start -Ups .

Author David Silver has over thirty years experience backing entrepreneurial companies, and it shows from the getgo.Silver's message is simple ,within 3 years Internet Communities will be seriously big business, names like MySpace,YouTube,Facebook have been sold for millions or are being offered millions of dollars. The success of these embryonic companies has been built on two primeval human instincts ,the need to search and share. In the past it was tribal hunting of game, now its information ,globally in real time. When citizens have the urge to search and share common data/information -Communities are formed-Online.The money will go to those forward thinking entrepreneurs who aggregate, those search and share hungry individuals into Online and more recently Mobile(phone) communities.Despite being a highly respected VC not only in the business but on the lecture circuit,David Silver, many times emphasises that very little venture capital or indeed business experience is essential. The beauty is that like the Weight Watchers business model ,the assets are the subscribers themselves!.Or as Silver puts it, think like this `'My Community will not incur cost of goods sold and my members will generate the data and pay me for the privilege of sharing it with other like minded members''.Pure and simple if you build it they will come in their mobbing digital droves, wagging their ,music, pictures, videos, stories, behind them.So what ? heres what! get enough millions of like minded people together and the bricks and mortar boys (traditional business),will have ready made customer bases. If you are smart enough You will be the one selling You Tube est 2005 selling it to Google for $1.3 billion in 2006.If you take the Initiative NOW,you will be positioned to take full advantage of the coming WEB 2.0 ,i.e the age of communities.

But putting it that simply does not do Smart Start-Ups justice. This book is refreshing in non prejudice detail, and glorious insight.I would recommend this book be referenced over and over ,by those budding `'Communiteers'' as Silver calls them. From raising Capital,to the rules for creating Successful online Communities,to Reputation management it's all here.Traditional business is reeling ,the online/mobile consumers like you and me are calling the shots. There is serious money to be made ,by giving people something simple online/mobile ,that something, a digital space to share a common interest.I cannot rate this book highly enough and recommend it more as a vital handbook-than to be ever left on a shelf.

5 out of 5 stars YouTube / Stickam Killer Combination.......2007-08-22

I bought this book because I am an active participant on YouTube where the concept of an online community is frequently discussed and hotly debated. The author missed the significance of Stickam which in combination with YouTube creates a compelling community of real friends. I see a lot of potential in cross-site communities where people who get to know each other on one web site gather on other web sites that offer additional opportunities for social interaction.

I'm more interested in the sociological aspects of online communities. It seems to me that video is vital in combatting modern social isolation because only video allows you to see and hear people so you really get to know them. YouTube and Stickam are the only web sites I've known that really manage to create a genuine sense of community where real friendships can be formed.

5 out of 5 stars A priceless resource for online and mobile entrepreneurs.......2007-07-11

I can't think of a more enlightening book on the topic of entrepreneurship applied to the world of online and mobile communities (can't quite figure out why or how the editors skipped the mention of the mobile component in the title of the book either).

I picked it up by pure accident at a bookstore one day and now it's become an essential reference as I am working on the development of an online community for people affected by diabetes at tudiabetes.com. Although I am not in complete agreement with some of the strategies presented, overall David Silver provides up and coming entrepreneurs with a chockfull of ideas that will keep you making notes as you go through the chapters.

As a veteran online communiteer, I highly recommend this book for anyone considering venturing into the online (or mobile) world to colonize new spaces as we enter the new era of the internet.

    Book Description

This book provides a systematic analysis of the performance of Brazil’s large state-owned enterprises. The Brazilian economic system encourages private enterprise, but the government itself owns and operates such critical industries as petrochemicals, steel, electricity and telecommunications. The Brazilian state has assumed the role of an entrepreneur not for ideological reasons, but as a pragmatic means of speeding up the process of economic growth. The author examines the economic and financial performance of these state-owned enterprises in terms of their contribution to economic growth. He concludes that in Brazil they have been effective substitutes for private investment in a number of strategic industries and that their ability to assemble large amounts of capital, to attract skilled managers, and to earn reasonable profits permitted the Brazilian economy to grow more rapidly during the 1960s and 1970s than would have been the case in their absence.

      Book Description

Jameson W. Doig and Erwin C. Hargrove outline a perspective on leadership in government that emphasizes entrepreneurship. They show how government executives' ability to set goals, generate support inside and outside the bureaucracy, and implement innovative ideas-- even at risk to their own careers-- can have a significant impact on their organizations and on society.

In this abridged edition, biographical studies of David Lilienthal, Hyman Rickover, James Webb, Nancy Hanks, Robert McNamara, Wilbur Cohen, Robert Ball, and Austin Tobin illustrate a variety of skills and strategies used by effective executives. Doig and Hargrove describe their styles as ranging from "rhetorical leaders" to "entrepreneurial administrators". Yet these diverse leaders share some important traits, including a capacity to see historical opportunity, the ability to mobilize constituencies, and a desire to "make a difference".

5 out of 5 stars People We Should Be Hearing About on the Evening News.......2006-05-25

After reading and hearing so much in the news about the deterioration of our society, it is refreshing to read a book written as a result of one person's quest to disprove our much-publicized downfall. Berg's book is both inspiring and uplifting. Her writing style is welcoming and invites the reader to continue with her on her quest. Berg chronicles the beginnings of several national and local programs, each instigated by one person who saw a need and wanted to make a difference.

So often we think, I'm no hero, what could I do? How can I possibly make a difference? Berg teaches us that we each have the power to make a difference, to change our lives and the lives of others for the better. In one case, a simple letter to the right person started the nation's Amber Alert system. Others have dedicated their lives to their mission to change the status quo. Each of us, by not standing idly by, has the ability to affect change. Whether it is through a letter, a phone call or through personal sacrifice, we can take back our society knowing that any one of us may have the next idea, thought, or program that changes lives. Berg shows us the greatest power is not necessarily the result of group think tanks and government funding it is also inside each one of us.

4 out of 5 stars Our Civic Entrepreneurs........2006-05-20

Debra Schweiger Berg's book, The Power of One, showcases a great many of America's highly successful, and relatively unknown, grassroots charitable institutions. The folks and organizations profiled are micro-charities, but their dedication, simplicity, and efficiency allows them to have a considerable impact upon their communities. Due to their size and non-compromised values, they are not weighed down by rules and overhead. There does not seem to be among these "civic entrepreneurs" a need to self-perpetuate their existence and foster waste. They're helping others and that's about it--which is as it should be. If I had a million dollars and I wanted to give to the needy, I certainly wouldn't give it to government or a foundation that misused its funds for political purposes. I would give it to somebody like The Harlem Chess Center where they're actually doing what their supposed to be doing with their donations.

The Power of One is an encyclopedic work which profiles charities within the context of larger themes. It offers readers a great many facts which are both useful and enhance our knowledge base. Some of the author's observations, like that a correlation exists between church activism and community activism, are quite insightful. The work also explains that just because an organization may have a religious background does not mean that its functionaries attempt to evangelize whomever they encounter. I was glad to discover that there are 1.8 million registered non-profit organizations in the United States, and I'll be bringing that quote out every time I get in an argument about how "selfish" Americans are. Berg put forth strong effort in compiling her narrative, and it makes for a fine reference work.

5 out of 5 stars Redtape Busting Heroes.......2004-10-08

The Power of One is a thought-provoking, totally engrossing read. In its pages, Debra brings to life some real-life heroes. By my definition, a hero is someone who sees a problem and takes whatever steps possible to fix it. We are introduced to over 30 such dedicated, caring, but average people who have given of their time and other resources, sometimes with accompanying personal sacrifices, not for self-gain but for the greater good of a segment of the population within their individual communities. In several instances, their brainchild has been duplicated many times over.

For one, we meet the woman who was the catalyst for Amber Alert. In another chapter, we learn of a group of people who tackles the problem of gang graffiti in and around their neighborhood. By improving the vicinity around their own business, the commercial area became revitalized, adding more jobs to a previously depressed area. I was especially touched by the efforts of one gentleman who took it upon himself to provide housing and food for a particularly impoverished, seemingly forgotten, community in Illinois. The inspiring examples just go on and on.

I am convinced that for every example presented in The Power of One, there are hundreds more out there, examples of normal citizens, who without government funding and the unavoidable redtape associated with it, have utilized their time and talents to make a difference. It would be to anyone's benefit to buy this book to learn more about these heroes and to learn from them how it's possible to make such a difference. Doing so can potentially impact thousands of lives, even outside the United States!

      Book Description

One good idea can change your life and everybody else's....if you know how to share it. Better yet, from one idea you can create your own empire, with you as the emperor or empress.

If you know something that others will pay to know, that is the core. Not only do you strengthen that unique element of knowledge, you redefine and repackage that expanded core by the most appropriate of the many means

of information dissemination: articles, a book, talks, speeches, seminars, audio and/or video tapes, a newsletter, consulting, and more...

By sharing needed information one way it leads to sharing it by others, and the collective sharing further identifies you as the person, the perceived expert, to be sought for even further help, information, or direction in that area of inquiry.

Empire-Building By Writing And Speaking takes you through the process, from identifying the core knowledge to putting all of the means in motion.

The concept is old but the terms are new, and having it now in how-to form, the why's and how's, in a sensible process you can follow, is a godsend for people who know something, or can, and want desperately to share it with others.

This book shares a way that you can do just that and still live a decent life, with the monetary as well as psychic rewards that you deserve for helping others and yourself.

One idea can be the core of an empire

It can make you rich and set you free

Yet ideas alone aren't enough. If they were, the world would be full of liberated millionaires. Ideas must be directed, structured, and put in motion. They must have a purpose. So this book offers a 15-step process by which you can turn ideas, through writing and speaking, into action. It helps you disseminate your ideas and create an action plan.

Empire-Building By Writing And Speaking suggests a form of operational order to the otherwise random chaos of knowledge so that ideas can be directed at problem-solving, goal-attaining, even profit-making. They can be the difference between sharing by one means or many, better said, the difference between enlightening a few and earning several hundred dollars or telling the world and a potential $1,000,000!

This may be Burgett's longest remembered book by the writers and speakers he has helped. Have you the courage to be the ruler of your own empire? Then buy, read, and do.

      1 out of 5 stars Disappointingly Shallow!.......2005-05-22

I was extremely disappointed in the Burgett book from the moment I opened the cover. If you had no idea how to build an empire through speaking and writing before reading this, the unfortunate likelihood is you're still clueless.

I give this book 1-star because it is an outstanding NEGATIVE example of a self-published book. The book is a poorly formatted and the content is 98% fluff.

Sadly, Burgett lists Dan Poynter's SELF-PUBLISHING MANUAL in his bibliography, but does not follow any of his advice.

A much better use of your money is the paperback edition of MONEY TALKS by Alan Weiss. It's a 5-star read!

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent book!.......2003-12-03

The concept is excellent, and is clearly explained here. He went on to develop it in greater detail in books titled Niche Marketing and Publishing to Niche Markets. Burgett provides the mental tools to take one idea and build from it forever.

1 out of 5 stars The Tide is Rising on this Castle Made of Sand.......2003-01-08

The book IS all hype. There is an inherent danger in having a business that shows people how to have a business. The danger is getting swallowed up by self-generated hype. Some books manage to escape the danger, but not this one.

This book has very little useful information. If you're interested in this subject, you will need to buy a book on self-publishing, one on public speaking/seminars, and one on PR. How could this little book cover all these topics adequately. It can't.

1 out of 5 stars This books goes nowhere..........2003-01-03

This book is like so many other money-making books; they get you excited, but fail to deliver any useful information. Gordon Burgett spends the entire book talking about the planning stage. At the very end of the book, he slides over the implementation stage in only a couple dozen pages. In reality, building an 'empire' takes a lot more than planning!

If you have enough enthusiasm to buy this book, Gordon Burgett's book will offer nothing else to you. I feel I have wasted [money].

4 out of 5 stars TRANSFORMING IDEAS INTO INCOME.......2000-12-13

Because I suspected this book was a bit heavy on hype and lean on practicality, I sampled it from my local library first. Much to my surprise, the material is well organized, timeless, insightful, and pleasantly written. (It's a shame that the sample chapter shown here is on research, and not even the best part of that chapter... Because the books starts out with a strong introduction and then continues to build momentum with each chapter.)

If you are in a business or profession where you have the opportunity to provide information others value, then you should seriously consider becoming a merchant of ideas. This book is an excellent start for discovering and implementing ideas that you can transform into income. Along this line, I would also suggest these books as companions in creating a well balanced game plan. First the undisputed bible of self-publishing, THE SELF-PUBLISHING MANUAL: HOW TO WRITE, PRINT AND SELL YOUR OWN BOOK by Dan Poytner, Then, an outstanding book on creating an integrated vision of your life and business, MAKING A LIVING WITHOUT A JOB: WINNING WAYS FOR CREATING WORK THAT YOU LOVE by Barbara J. Winters.

Why did I give this book only four stars, not five? Because, although the book works in its current form, it would be nice to see a second edition. One would hope the author has new and improved insights to add, and at the very least this book deserves a fresh cover that matches the content.
